It's not Mihon: a hollow manga app squats one search term and hits 110k installs in three and a half months
What it is A Google Play manga app that borrows the name of the open-source manga reader Mihon. English only, lots of ads, no extension support, nothing to do with the real Mihon.
Why it took off The real Mihon isn't on Play for policy reasons, so this app grabbed the top spot for "mihon" on Play first. Add Kotatsu going dormant, pirate sites getting shut down, and Google tightening sideloading, and more people looking for a reader on Play keep arriving. It now brings in over a thousand people a day.
CHow you could follow it Don't collide with the same name (four or five other clones already occupy it, and it's against the rules). You could take the idea and build a compliant, genuinely useful general manga/CBZ reader (local files plus a self-hosted library, multilingual, few ads), and ship it on Play before sideloading restrictions spread worldwide in 2027 years.
- Data (updated daily) · first launch 2026-07-22 · 11-07 installs 111,559
Android · Total installs worldwide Data 2026-10-29 → 2026-11-07 (10 days, 10 observations). Google's detail page only refreshes install counts every other day, so a flat day doesn't mean nobody installed.Android · Ratings count (cumulative) Data 2026-10-29 → 2026-11-07 (10 days, 10 observations)
The app called "Mihon" on Google Play has nothing to do with the open-source manga reader on GitHub with 25k stars. The real project said it wouldn't go on Play, so the term "mihon" sat empty on Play, and this app claimed it first. On Nov 6, searching "mihon" in the US store, it was the first result. Over a thousand people install from it every day, and only to find they've been fooled, with 86% of ratings at one star. This piece covers how it rose, the playbook behind its 92 names, why you shouldn't copy it, and what you could do instead.
One person who "just installed it"
On Oct 13, US user Nick Muldrew left a review on its Play listing: "Just installed, can't even see the chapter list, full-screen ads one after another." A week ago, Kaisle Blank wrote more: they'd assumed the low rating was people hating the ads, and after installing found that "every tap pops an ad, the ads are long with no close button; when you finally close one, it kicks you back to the home screen, and back in the app it's another ad."
Someone posted on r/mangapiracy asking why their Mihon had no "add extension" option. The reply was one line: "That is not the mihon app… mihon is not on the Google play store, uninstall that scam app."
These people share one thing: they were looking for the real Mihon, searched the name on Play, and installed the top result.
What the real Mihon is, and why it isn't on Play
In January 2024, the long-running open-source manga reader Tachiyomi went dormant, and the project the community carried on is Mihon. It ships with no content: users install third-party "extensions" to connect to various manga sources, pick their own sources, and manage their own libraries. It's free and has no ads. On GitHub, mihonapp/mihon has 25,064 stars (11-06), and in Oct 25 it shipped v0.21.3.
Its fame spread largely by word of mouth. A TikTok video by senki211 said in one line, "I've used this app for years," tagged #tachi #mihon, with 560k views. People who saw it remembered the name "Mihon," and some went straight to the Play Store and searched.
But it will never appear on Play. The official FAQ is clear: "Mihon won't be on the Google Play Store," because the extension-install mechanism conflicts with Google Play's content policy. So there's no real Mihon on Play contesting the term "mihon," and whoever claims it first keeps it.
How it grew: a straight line
| Date | Cumulative installs (est.) |
|---|---|
| 8-15 | 6,166 |
| 8-25 | 20,296 |
| 9-23 | 43,304 |
| 10-26 | 100,196 |
| 11-06 | 111,559 |
Data is estimated from Google Play install counts. From mid-August on, 1,000–1,500 people arrived each day, with 7 more in the last 11,327 days. No acceleration, no drop-off. That's what search-term traffic looks like: the number of people arriving each day is roughly the number searching "mihon" on Play each day. A few days saw four or five thousand to nearly nine thousand extra (9-24, 10-04, 10-08). I didn't find out why.
On Nov 6, it sat on the free manga charts in 22 countries: #7 in Italy, #9 in Spain, #10 in Germany, #12 in France, and mostly around #14 and #15 elsewhere. Smaller countries often share a chart, so this is essentially a position around #15 on a single global free manga chart, not separate pushes in each country (inference). It isn't in the top 25 of the US free manga chart.
The product itself is nearly a negative: English only, the version has been stuck at 1.0.4 since listing, with no updates after Jul 22. 158 ratings, averaging 1.47. Spanish-language users complain it's "English only" and "can't find Spanish manga"; English users complain about ads. No in-app purchases, so money comes only from ads. The ad disclosure file on its website lists just one ad network, BidMachine. I found no evidence it's running ads on Meta or Google's ad libraries (absence of evidence isn't proof), and a one-star app relying on a single ad network is unlikely to fund paid acquisition.
Behind it: 92 names
The developer is called BAV STUDIO, with a developer site hosted under a GitHub account, bavgolkonda. The account was registered in Jun 2026 8, has 92 repos, and each repo serves as the privacy or ad disclosure page for a clone app, with repo names matching the borrowed names: on the manga side Mihon, Tachiyomi, Kotatsu, MangaFire, MangaKakalot, VyManga, LectorTMO, NovelCool; on the video and sports side StreamEast, HesGoal, F2Movies, Popcorn-Time. Every borrowed name belongs to an open-source tool or a pirate site.
These apps are spread across several developer accounts, so if one is banned the others are unaffected. The ones I could match:
| App | Developer account | Launched | Installs (11-06, est.) | past 7 days |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Mihon: Manga Comic Library | BAV STUDIO | 07-22 | 111,559 | +11,327 |
| Lectormanga - Manga y Manhwa | AWWSTUDIO | 07-04 | 98,401 | +9,123 |
| Kotatsu – Read Manga & Comics | BAV STUDIO | 07-17 | 97,102 | +6,300 |
| VyManga : Read Manga | AWWSTUDIO | 07-04 | 23,931 | +530 |
| MangaFire - Read Manga Online | AWWSTUDIO | 07-04 | 20,446 | +660 |
Together about 380k installs. Of the 92 names, only these few broke out: Mihon, Kotatsu, and Lectormanga (from the Spanish-speaking TMO ecosystem), all names many people already search for. If nobody searches a name, a clone built on it gets no installs.
Lectormanga ranks #5 on the Spanish free manga chart, and the Kotatsu clone is also #1 for "kotatsu" on Play. Kotatsu is another open-source reader that was shut down in November 2025 after legal threats from Kakao Entertainment and Google's new sideloading rules; its GitHub repo was archived. The project has no maintainer, and people are still searching the name.
Why this summer
The original projects are going one by one, and sideloading is tightening, so more people want to "install one from the Play Store":
- 2025-09 ComicK shut down, 2025-11 Kotatsu went dormant, 2026-01 Bato.to and 60 mirror sites were taken down by the anti-piracy group CODA. Websites are getting worse, so people go looking for apps.
- Google's developer verification took effect in Brazil, Indonesia, Singapore, and Thailand starting 2026-09-30: phones there can only install apps from verified developers, and it rolls out globally in 2027. The Mihon community opened a GitHub issue on how to respond, and "Is there a real Mihon on Play?" has become a common question. But the data shows no jump around 9-30 (9-28 then 51,879,10-01 then 54,899, still about a thousand a day), so this hasn't really moved it so far.
It isn't the only one that spotted this gap. Around July 2026, at least four or five developers listed clone apps the same month: GoldenDev Studio's "Tachiyomi" (68k installs) and "kotatsu," OLEXK's "Mangadex" (21k), and MuBu Legal's "Mihon: Manga Reader & Comics," which launched on Aug 30 with the exact same name, a month later, with 6,708 installs, unable to beat it in search ranking. Bigger still is the clone borrowing a pirate webtoon site's name: MangaMuse: AceToon Lite has 788k installs and reached the top 10 of the US free manga chart.
Who it's competing with
| Competitors | Scale | How it differs |
|---|---|---|
| Real Mihon (open source) | GitHub 25k stars | Full-featured, free, no ads, but not on Play |
| Same-name clones (MuBu Legal and others) | Thousands to tens of thousands of installs | Also hollow, arrived late, ranked lower |
| Clones borrowing pirate webtoon names (AceToon Lite and others) | Hundreds of thousands of installs | Same playbook, borrowing a louder name |
| WEBTOON, MANGA Plus, Manga UP! | 190M / 30.8M / 8.93M installs | Legitimate serialization platforms; users want something different |
On features, it loses to everyone. Its only edge is ranking first on Play, and so far it hasn't been taken down.
Money and risk
Revenue isn't public, and no media outlet or big X account has written about it. In pirate-manga circles it's just a "scam app, uninstall now." With over a thousand people a day installing and then wanting to delete it, relying on one ad network, a single app probably makes in the low thousands of dollars a month (pure guess). Across the whole matrix of 380k installs, maybe a few thousand to ten-some thousand dollars a month (pure guess).
The risk is built into the playbook: borrowing someone else's name is "impersonation," which Play explicitly bans. One complaint from a trademark holder or developer and it gets pulled, and the account can be banned too. This operation splits apps across more than three accounts and batch-hosts privacy pages on GitHub Pages, which is preparation for getting banned.
If it were you
Verdict: There's something to learn here, but don't copy it. This one's traffic depends entirely on squatting other people's names, and the loud names (Mihon, Tachiyomi, Kotatsu, Mangadex) have already been taken by four or five clones. If you go after the same term now, you'll land behind MuBu Legal and take on impersonation-takedown risk. The idea worth taking away is a way of finding demand: some needs are huge, but the real product can't get into the store for policy reasons.
适合谁:做过 Android 阅读器或文件管理类工具、愿意老老实实做个合规产品的 1–2 个人;或者手上已经有 Play 开发者账号和 ASO 经验、想找下一个搜索词空档的人。
Who it doesn't suit: Anyone who wants to just add another "Mihon" or "Kotatsu" (the spot is gone, and it's still against the rules); anyone who wants to earn from content (legal content sits with WEBTOON and publishers, and pirate sources are why Mihon isn't on Play); anyone who plans to monetize purely through paid acquisition (one-star apps don't retain users, and ad revenue can't fund UA).
How to build it: Make a manga reader that actually works and doesn't touch pirate sources: local CBZ/CBR/EPUB/PDF reading, library and reading-progress management, and connection to a self-hosted library server (Komga, Kavita, and similar). Choose a generic name that matches searches like "manga reader," "comic reader," or "cbz reader," and carry no one else's trademark. The clone apps' bad reviews are a checklist for you: few or no ads, multilingual support (Spanish users are already asking), and regular updates.
How to get users: Play Store search is the main channel. Be honest in the description: "local reader, bring your own files." Target people who installed a clone, deleted it, and still want a working reader. Manga and self-hosting communities on Reddit, and "underrated Android apps" videos on TikTok, are where the original Mihon and Tachiyomi rose.
Deadline: Google's developer verification rolls out globally in 2027. Until then, the harder sideloading gets, the bigger the demand for "a trustworthy reader on Play." Aim to ship before the first half of 2027 so you can build up ratings.
Looked closer: ① After Google mass-delisted these name-squatting apps, the generic compliant reader didn't take off either. That tells us demand is for the name Mihon, not for "a good reader." ② Either the official Mihon ships a Play-listed build, or once the official sideload via developer verification runs smoothly, the gap closes. ③ Flip side: when the squatter clones got delisted, the second batch immediately took back the top spot. Google clearly can't keep up. This space is won by running many accounts and rotating fast, and the compliant route can't beat that.

- Verified Play Store brand-term search (squatting on the Mihon name): searching "mihon" in the US Play store, it ranks #1 (11-06 crawl). Reddit users ask about it as if it were the real Mihon: "no add extension option." Daily installs are steady, which matches the shape of search traffic.
- Verified Spillover from the real Mihon's reputation (TikTok, Reddit word of mouth): top "mihon app" TikTok video at 560k views. The mihon.app FAQ explicitly says it isn't on Play.
- Verified Category free-chart exposure: around #7–17 on the Manga Top Free chart in 22 stores, which adds secondary exposure.
- Inferred Paid acquisition: not tracked in Meta or Google ad libraries. With 1 stars and a single ad network, it's hard to support CPI.

Channel: Google Play, Comics category. Developer "BAV STUDIO" (email [email protected], developer site bavgolkonda.github.io/Mihon/app-ads.txt). Store debut 2026-07-22, no updates since version 1.0.4. Research date 2026-11-06.
Bottom line
This is not Mihon. The real Mihon is an open-source manga reader with 25k stars on GitHub, and its maintainers say outright that it will never go on Google Play. This app is squatting the "mihon" search term on Play: search "mihon" in the US store and it's the first result. Every day, a thousand or two people looking for the real Mihon search the store and land here instead, getting an ad-filled shell with 86% one-star reviews. The growth comes from brand-term hijacking, not from the product. The same operator has mass-produced apps named after pirate sites and open-source tools (Kotatsu, MangaFire, LectorTMO, StreamEast, Popcorn-Time...) across at least 3 developer accounts, 92 of them in total. The timing lines up with Kotatsu shutting down 2025-11, Bato.to getting taken down 2026-01, and Google starting to restrict sideloading in some countries 2026-09-30, so demand for "get it from the Play Store" keeps spilling over.
1. Data: a steady line, no spike
- Installs (googleplay library
app_day_ext, AppstoreSpy estimates + self-collected): 8-15 6,166 → 8-25 20,296 → 9-23 43,304 → 10-04 65,318 → 10-26 100,196 → 11-06 111,559. From mid-August it has been roughly 1,000–1,500 a day, with occasional days jumping 4–9k (9-24 + 4,747,10-04 + 8,901,10-08 + 7,275). The cause wasn't identified. - +11,327 over the last 7 days (
app_profile). No clear acceleration and no decline, which fits search-term traffic: daily users roughly equal the number of people searching "mihon" on Play each day. - Ratings: 158 total, average 1.47; histogram [136, 0, 0, 10, 10], 86% one-star (
app_snap11-06). No in-app purchases, only ads (offers_iap=False,ad_supported=True). The app-ads.txt lists only one ad network, BidMachine (bavgolkonda.github.io/Mihon/app-ads.txt). - Charts: 11-06 is on the Manga Top Free chart in 22 stores: #7 in Italy, #9 in Spain, #10 in Germany, #12 in France, and about #14–15 in the dozen-plus other stores (
chart_rank). Small-country category charts are mostly the same aggregate chart, so "charted in 22 countries" roughly means ranked around #15 on a global Manga Top Free chart, not that it's pushing country by country. It isn't in the top 25 of the US Manga Top Free chart. - Reviews (Spanish sample): "too many ads," "no Spanish," "can't find a Spanish manga filter." On r/mangapiracy, a user asked "no option to add extensions in Mihon," and the reply was: "That is not the mihon app… mihon is not on the Google play store, uninstall that scam app" (Reddit). Another thread, "Is Mihon removed?", got the same answer: Mihon isn't on Play, download it from GitHub or mihon.app (Reddit). The people installing it were looking for the real Mihon.
2. Where users come from: store brand-term search (confirmed)
- Search results: a Jina crawl of a US Play search for "mihon" (play.google.com/store/search?q=mihon&gl=us, 11-06) shows it as the only top large card. Searching "kotatsu" also ranks the same operator's Kotatsu clone first.
- Where the demand comes from: the real Mihon succeeded Tachiyomi after it went dormant. The GitHub repo mihonapp/mihon has 25,064 stars (GitHub API, 11-06), and it's still shipping releases (v0.21.3,10-25 in October). TikTok has plenty of "mihon app" word-of-mouth videos, for example senki211 with 560k views and meimasaur with 18k views (TikHub search). These videos make people remember the name "Mihon," and some then go straight to the Play Store and search.
- The official isn't on Play: the Mihon FAQ says "Mihon won't be on the Google Play Store. APK-based extensions conflict with Google Play's content policy" (mihon.app FAQ). So there's no official listing on Play to push this app out of that search term.
- Paid acquisition: our Meta and Google ad libraries don't track it (not finding it doesn't mean it isn't advertising). A 1-star average rating plus monetization through one ad network makes CPI-based acquisition hard to justify. The curve is flat, which doesn't look like paid spend either. The judgment rests mainly on organic search; the paid side is unverified.
3. Behind it is a brand-capture matrix
- The developer website domain
bavgolkonda.github.iobelongs to the GitHub user bavgolkonda, account created 2026-06-08, with 92 repositories. Each repo is one clone app's app-ads.txt or privacy page, named after pirate sites or open-source tools: AceToon, Comix, Kotatsu, Mihon, Tachiyomi, MangaFire, MangaKakalot, MangaNelo, VyManga, LectorTMO, ZonaTMO, TuManga, NovelCool, Hentaiser, HiperDex, OmegaScans, plus film and sports pirate sites StreamEast, HesGoal, TotalSportek, VipLeague, F2Movies, Popcorn-Time, YoMovies, TugaFlix, PlayPelis and others. Repos were created in batches starting 2026-06, many with test suffixes (GitHub API). - What matches in our library (googleplay library, matched by developer website): | App | Developer account | Debut | Installs | 7 days | |---|---|---|---|---| | Mihon: Manga Comic Library | BAV STUDIO | 07-22 | 111,559 | +11,327 | | Lectormanga - Manga y Manhwa | AWWSTUDIO | 07-04 | 98,401 | +9,123 (#5 Spain Manga Top Free) | | Kotatsu – Read Manga & Comics | BAV STUDIO | 07-17 | 97,102 | +6,300 | | VyManga : Read Manga | AWWSTUDIO | 07-04 | 23,931 | +530 | | Demus: Music & Songs | DevMono Studio | 08-10 | 21,709 | — | | MangaFire - Read Manga Online | AWWSTUDIO | 07-04 | 20,446 | +660 | | MangaKakalot - Read Manga | AWWSTUDIO | 07-04 | 8,507 | +1,553 | Total about 380k installs. BAV STUDIO's store page now lists only 3 apps (Dramari, Mihon, Kotatsu). The other brands are spread across accounts such as AWWSTUDIO and DevMono Studio (an AppBrain search summary shows DevMono Studio has 9 apps, with the same website bavgolkonda.github.io). Splitting across multiple accounts means one ban doesn't take the whole network down.
- Only the brands that really took off ran through: Mihon, Kotatsu, LectorManga (the Spanish-language TMO family). The takeaway is that this playbook depends on the borrowed name already having search volume.
- There is a UK company with the same name, BAV GOLKONDA LTD (Companies House 15167967), registered for "Licensed restaurants." Nothing suggests a link to this operation; it's just a name match.
4. Why now: the originals are leaving, and sideloading is tightening
- Kotatsu shut down: the Kotatsu team announced it was stopping the project under legal threats from Kakao Entertainment and Google's new sideloading rules. The GitHub repo 2025-11 is archived (GitHub API: archived=True, last push 2025-11-04; r/mangapiracy "Kotatsu is dead"). Nobody maintains the brand anymore, but its search volume remains.
- Pirate sites taken down: Bato.to and 60 mirror sites were shut down 2026-01 by CODA (comicbook.com), and ComicK closed 2025-09. Web versions have become harder to use, so people switch to apps instead.
- Google developer verification: starting 2026-09-30, devices in Brazil, Indonesia, Singapore and Thailand will only install apps from verified developers. It rolls out worldwide over 2027 years (Android Developers). The Mihon community is preparing for it (mihon#2451), and Reddit is discussing what comes next. This makes "is Mihon on Play?" a natural question. But the data shows no clear jump around 9-30 (9-28 51,879 → 10-01 54,899, still about 1 thousand a day). So far the effect on it is not obvious. It looks more like groundwork for later.
- July's batch was a coordinated push: BAV STUDIO, AWWSTUDIO, GoldenDev Studio (Tachiyomi 07-19, kotatsu 07-22, Mangazone 07-14), and OLEXK APPS STUDIOS (Mangadex 07-24, Comix, ClariToon, Tomato Manga) nearly all launched around 2026-07. Several teams spotted the same gap at once.
5. Competitors
- The original: Mihon (open source, 25k GitHub stars, APKs only on mihon.app and GitHub). It offers extension sources plus a local library, completely free, with no ads. Knockoff apps can't match it on features. Their only "advantage" is that they show up in Play search.
- Same-name brands siphoning traffic (googleplay library): GoldenDev Studio's "Tachiyomi : Manga & Comics" 68,284 (+6,538/7 days), "Mangazone" 41,210, "kotatsu" 4,129; OLEXK's "Mangadex: Manga, Comics" 20,869; MuBu Legal, P.C.'s "Mihon: Manga Reader & Comics" 6,708 (launched 08-30, a direct name clash, but it can't beat the earlier one in search ranking). Bigger clones borrow the names of pirated webtoon brands: MangaMuse: AceToon Lite 788,476, MangaNest: QToon Lite 326,774 (US Comics free chart #6, #2); MyComics (riding AceToon) 48,282.
- Official platforms: WEBTOON (190M installs), MANGA Plus (30.8M), Manga UP! (8.93M), Cookie Manga and others hold the top of the comics charts. Users want something different (licensed serials vs. an aggregator reader where you pick your own sources).
- iOS side: Tachiyomi-extension-compatible readers like Tachimanga are on the App Store (scale not checked one by one).
6. Differentiation
The product has no differentiation, and it's a negative: English only, heavy ads, 86% one-star reviews, and no updates since launch. Compared with the real Mihon, and with the same batch of name-clone apps, its only distinguishing trait is that it grabbed the word "mihon" on Play first and was never taken down, so the early arrival holds the top search slot. That is the whole reason it performs. The same playbook on Kotatsu reached 97k.
7. Visibility and copycats
- Revenue isn't public, and no media outlet or big X account has written about it (x-radar search for "mihon" shows no relevant discussion in the last 120 days). In pirate-manga circles (r/mangapiracy) it's called a "scam app", with people reminding others to uninstall, but nobody has broken it down as a business.
- Copycats are already plentiful: GoldenDev, OLEXK and MuBu Legal each have name-clone versions of Mihon, Tachiyomi, Kotatsu, Mangadex and Bato. MuBu Legal's is literally titled "Mihon: Manga Reader & Comics". The gap is already crowded. Google just hasn't cleaned it up yet.
8. What others can learn
- Find names with huge demand whose originals are absent from Play or the App Store for policy reasons (open-source tools, shut-down sites, delisted apps). Occupying that search term in the store earns steady free traffic. The playbook can be copied, but the risks are trademark or impersonation complaints, Google takedowns, and developer account bans. So operators spread the risk across 3+ accounts and batch-host app-ads.txt on GitHub Pages.
- The legitimate route: build a genuinely useful "compliant" version (for example, a CBZ reader for local comics plus library management) under a generic name that these searches can surface. It will retain far more users than an empty shell.
9. Still unclear
- What the app actually shows inside (metadata? the MangaDex API? pirated sources?) — not checked by installing it.
- Whether there is paid acquisition (not tracked by the ad libraries). The causes of the single-day spikes on 9-24, 10-04 and 10-08 were not found.
- Who the operator is and which country they're in were not found. bavgolkonda and a UK restaurant company of the same name appear unrelated.
- Ad revenue. Estimating from BidMachine plus 1 thousand-odd low-quality installs a day, a single app might earn in the low thousands of dollars a month (pure speculation).
- When Google will take it down for impersonation or trademark reasons.
