A name anyone can use: "Mixtube" on Android, 400k installs in three and a half months

What it is A free music app on Android. The store listing calls it a local player, but users actually use it to search songs on YouTube, stream them, and download them for offline listening. It makes money from ads.

Why it took off Students in the Philippines and Latin America spread word of mouth on TikTok: "Can't afford Spotify? Use Mixtube." There is no official app on Android, so users search the name on Play, and it ranks #3, capturing ready-made search traffic.

CHow you could follow Don't try to take the Mixtube name, which is already crowded. Copy the approach: watch for app names that users spread organically on TikTok but that have no official Android app yet, and claim the search slot within one or two months.

Grade C: the approach is worth learning, but the name is already filled with a dozen same-name packages, the largest near 2M installs. The core function sits in a copyright gray area, and the same developer's sibling packages have already been pulled. Following Mixtube itself isn't worth it. Few people know about it yet

An Android app called Mixtube pro launched in Jul 17. By Nov 6 it had 406k installs, with over ten thousand a day in the last week. The store calls it an "offline local music player," but users use it to search, stream and download music from YouTube for free. It took off not because of the product but because of the name "Mixtube": for several years students in the Philippines and Latin America have posted on TikTok, "Can't afford a Spotify membership, so use Mixtube." The name has no owner, so anyone can use it. Below: how it caught this wave of traffic, where the money comes from, why this spot is already crowded, and which part of this playbook is actually worth taking.

A student with no internet at school

In Oct 15, a user named Melanie Belen Ramos left a review on the Mexico store page, and 72 people later marked it helpful:

"You can download music and listen offline... any song you want, it's really useful for me, because sometimes I want to listen to music at school. There are ads, but not many, and they pop up when you search for songs."

Two days later another user, Maria Mendez, wrote: "I ran out of data and wanted to listen to Katseye again, so this is how I did it." Someone in the Philippines store was more direct: "Downloading songs is no problem, and you can watch videos too."

The store description doesn't mention "YouTube" once. It only says import local files, supports MP3, FLAC and background playback. But the reviews describe something else: search any song inside the app, stream it, save it for offline listening. The description and actual use don't match. This is a common packaging trick for apps like this, to pass review and dodge copyright complaints (inference).

Why it's rising now: users search the name

"Mixtube" wasn't the name it started with. The earliest Mixtube apps to take off were on iOS, spread by word of mouth among teens in the Philippines and Latin America:

  • On TikTok, in June 2024 someone posted asking how to search for songs on mixtube, 67k views; in February 2026 a Spanish video "listen to music totally free with mixtube" got 74k views; in April a Tagalog video said flatly "can't afford Spotify, so we use Mixtube"; in June someone under a Roblox video wrote "I don't have Spotify premium!! App name: mixtube."
  • On Reddit, back in 2023 someone posted: "There's an app called Mixtube that's a lifesaver. Without Spotify premium, the mobile version is basically unusable."
  • The iOS Mixtube apps themselves keep being pulled, renamed and republished: an early version with over a thousand ratings is no longer on the App Store, and the ones listed now are two new releases from 2025 October and 2026 September, by different developers.

So in users' minds "Mixtube" means "free music," but no single company owns it. An Android user hears about it from a friend, searches "mixtube" on Google Play, and gets a row of third-party apps with the same name. In Nov 6, searching in the Mexico store, Mixtube pro ranked #3.

Its install curve (Google Play installs; 8–October from third-party estimates, November from public store numbers):

DateTotal installs
08-112,617
09-0626,634
10-0176,125
10-20293,608
11-06406,092

About 1,700 a day in September, about 8,000 a day from October, and 7k added in the last 83 days. The October jump could be explained by search alone, or it could have been combined with Google app ad spend. The public ad libraries show no record of it, unverified.

It also got two small things right

Placed in the Entertainment category, not Music. The Music category is packed, and the bar to chart in Entertainment is lower. By Nov 6 it was on the Entertainment Top Free chart: #68 in Argentina, #81 in Mexico, #93 in South Africa, #104 in the Philippines, #153 in Malaysia. Charting means more exposure.

Ads appear only at the search and download steps. One reviewer calculated: "About every 5 songs you download, 1 ads pop up. Once you've downloaded them and listen offline, there are no ads." Ads show up when the user asks for something and stay out of the way during listening, so the average rating holds at 4.4 (global average). But a one-star review with 50 likes says: "Every time I search for a song, 3 ads pop up, and it gets stuck in an ad loop." Over 11 days one-star reviews went from 92 to 149, almost all complaining about ads.

Where the money comes from

Ads only, with no in-app purchases and no subscription. One app-open ad, interstitials on search and download. Users are mainly in Latin America and Southeast Asia, where ad rates are low, but it spends almost nothing on acquisition (if it isn't running paid campaigns), so the math works. How much it actually makes isn't visible from outside.

On the store page the developer is listed as "Mixtube Music player," the contact is wang yue, the address is Brisbane, Australia, the support email is a Gmail address, and the website is a single landing page plus a privacy policy. The "02" in the package name looks like a second account: another package under the same developer, "Mixtube Pro-LyricLoop," was still being updated in September and now won't open on Google Play.

Who it's competing with

It's not the only app eating this name's traffic:

Functionally it's no different from dozens of "offline music" apps. Its only advantages are the name, the search slot and category choice, and anyone else can copy all three, and already has.

If it were you

Verdict: Don't go after the "Mixtube" name. That spot already holds a dozen-plus packages, the largest near 2M installs, and this category keeps getting pulled. What's worth taking is the approach: find a name or phrase users are spreading on their own, where some platform has no official version yet, and claim the search slot on that platform.

Who it suits: Small teams that have built Android utility apps, understand store keywords and category choice, and can live with ad monetization and low per-user revenue. Better still if you read Latin American or Southeast Asian languages and can tell what users are actually searching for on TikTok.

Who it doesn't suit: Anyone unwilling to touch copyright gray areas (the core function of apps like this is pulling content from YouTube, which can get them pulled at any time after a complaint); anyone with a single developer account who can't afford a ban; anyone who wants subscriptions or to build a long-term brand.

How to do it: Each week, search TikTok for phrases like "app name," "no premium," "free music" by country and language, and note the names that keep recurring but have no official version on Google Play (usually an app that's big on iOS with no official Android version). Search that name on Play. Only worth building if the results still show just two or three small accounts. Put the term in the title and package name, file it in a category with a low bar to chart, and place ads only at the step where the user takes an action.

How to get users: Mainly through store search, because users' mental model has already been built on TikTok by others. After launch, watch your rank for this term; outside the top 3, you'll get almost no traffic.

When the window closes: names like this usually have a window of just a few months. From the first same-name package gaining installs, to search results getting swamped by a dozen-plus copies, Mixtube on Android took about 5 months (Mixtube Lite launched end of May; by November the first dozen-plus results were all same-name packages). Spot an open slot, and ship within a month or two. Later than that and you're second tier.

Signs you've read it wrong: ① Mixtube pro gets delisted in the next month, or daily installs fall to a few hundred: the play has a shorter life than it looks, and ban risk eats the profit; ② Google Play starts bulk-cleaning "Mixtube" same-name packages: the platform has targeted the term, and similar plays will tighten too; ③ the other way round, if it's still accelerating in December and charting in more countries: the name is generating more demand than it looks, and second-tier copies have room to eat too.

Last point for everyone building products: a name users pass around by word of mouth on TikTok can be worth more than the product itself. Whoever claims it first on a platform with no official owner gets free traffic.

Where users come from
  • Confirmed Borrowing an existing name (Mixtube passed around by word of mouth on TikTok and Reddit): TikTok videos from 2024–2026 in the Philippines and Latin America saying "listen to music free with mixtube", 10k~90k views per video; Reddit r/meme 2023 "Mixtube pure gold"
  • Confirmed Play Store search / ASO: searching mixtube on Play (gl=mx), it ranks #3; the title and package name include mixtube, and the description is stuffed with offline music downloader / mp3 player
  • Confirmed Category chart exposure: placed in Entertainment, 11-06 Argentina 68, Mexico 81, South Africa 93, Philippines 104, Malaysia 153
  • Inferred Paid acquisition (Google UAC / Meta): daily installs in October rose from about 1.7k to about 10k; the slope looks like paid spend, but our ad libraries don't cover it, so we can't verify

Why Mixtube pro-Precise tuning (com.mixtube02.playermusi) can run at all

Bottom line

The store calls it an "offline local music player", but what users actually do with it is: search any song, stream it free, and download it into the app to play offline, with content from YouTube. It belongs to the same "free YouTube music shell" group as Musi, Snaptube, and RYT. It takes off mainly by riding the "Mixtube" name: teens in the Philippines and Latin America have been passing it around on TikTok and Reddit for years, treating Mixtube as the substitute when you can't afford a Spotify subscription. On Android, users search "mixtube" in Play and see only third-party same-name packages, and it ranks #3 in Mexico's search results. It makes money from ads. The product itself has no differentiation; the differentiation is "name + search slot + not yet delisted".

1. Data

  • Launched 2026-07-17, earliest review 07-31 (googleplay library app). The developer is listed as "Mixtube Music player", contact email [email protected], website mixtubemi.com (a one-page landing site plus a privacy policy that only says "local music player").
  • Installs (googleplay library app_day_ext, AppstoreSpy estimates, consistent with the numbers we collected ourselves): 08-11 2,617 → 09-06 26,634 → 10-01 76,125 → 10-04 142,492 → 10-08 191,920 → 10-20 293,608 → 10-29 322,994 → 11-06 406,092 (our own collection).
    • September averaged about 1.7k a day; it accelerated from October, averaging about 8k a day. Over the last 7 days +83,098, about 12k a day. Google's install counts update in jumps every few days (for example, 10-04 added +58k in one day, then the following days sat near 0), so don't read too much into a single day.
  • Ratings count 1,175 → 1,508 (10-29 → 11-06, +30~53 per day). Average rating 4.54 → 4.41; 1-star reviews rose from 92 to 149, mostly complaints about ads (googleplay library app_snap.histogram).
  • It charted only in the Entertainment Top Free categories: Argentina 68, Mexico 81, South Africa 93, Philippines 104, Malaysia 153 (11-06 chart_rank). Not on the overall chart, not on Top Grossing. Marked as containing ads, no in-app purchases.
  • Play search for "mixtube" (gl=mx), in order: com.musicmixtube.tunedmusic, com.mixtubelite.musicpla, com.mixtube02.playermusi (this product, #3), com.tubmixmixtube.musictubeplayer, com.offline.music.step.go… The first dozen-plus results are nearly all "Mixtube" same-name packages from different developers (2026-11-06 read the Play search page via r.jina.ai).

2. What it actually is (from the reviews)

The store description only talks about "offline playback, importing local files, MP3/FLAC support", but the reviews say something else (pinned reviews on the Play page, 2026-08~10):

  • "descargas cualquier cancion……hay todo tipo de musica para explorar" (you can download any song, there's all kinds of music to explore; 72 people found it helpful, Mexico store)
  • "cuando trato de importar canciones de YTmusic me aparece 'importación fallida'" (importing playlists from YT Music fails)
  • "no problem Downloading a music, and you can even play the video" (downloading music works fine, and you can even play the video; Philippines store)
  • "when I try to search something it will say 3 ads……ad loop" (every search throws up 3 ads, and it gets stuck in an ad loop; 1 stars, 50 people found it helpful)
  • "1 ad per 5 song downloads……once you downloaded the songs, just play them offline and there won't be any ads" (roughly one ad every 5 songs downloaded, 1 ads in total; once downloaded, play offline and there are no ads)

So its real function is: search YouTube, stream online, save into the app to listen offline. Ads sit in the search and download steps, and offline playback runs ad-free. This matches the target users exactly: students with little data and no budget for a Spotify subscription. The store lists it as a "local player" most likely to get past review and dodge copyright complaints (inferred, based on the mismatch between description and reviews).

3. Where users come from

3.1 "Mixtube" is a name people have been spreading for a long time (confirmed)

  • TikTok (TikHub search for "mixtube"): users in the Philippines and Latin America have been posting "listen to music free with Mixtube" videos for 2024–2026 years, for example:
    • @boynas2.0 2026-02 "escucha música totalmente gratis con mixtube", 74k views;
    • @yourmay15 2026-04 "di ko afford yung spotify kaya mag mixtube tayo" (can't afford Spotify, so let's use Mixtube), 45k;
    • @lyyp3r 2026-06 "I don't have spotify premium!! app name: mixtube";
    • Mixtube tutorials from @baebeautyyy 2024-06 and @vigeta28 2024-12, 6~90k views each.
  • Reddit: r/meme 2023 "Theres this app named 'Mixtube' and its pure gold, Spotify mobile without premium is basically unusable"; a r/AskReddit thread "best app to listen to music for free" has people recommending Mixtube; r/apps has several Mixtube help posts.
  • Conclusion: users already associate "Mixtube = free music listening". Android users (many whose friends use iPhones, while they use Android) search this name in Play and land on this batch of same-name packages.

3.2 Store search + ASO (confirmed it ranks high)

  • "mixtube" ranks #3 in Mexico's search. The title contains Mixtube, the package name includes mixtube, and the description is packed with long-tail terms like "Offline music downloader / No wifi Mp3 player / mp3 player".
  • It's filed under Entertainment, not the crowded Music & Audio category: on the Entertainment Top Free charts in Argentina and Mexico, the bar to reach the top 100 is lower, and once charted it gets an extra stream of chart exposure.

3.3 Paid acquisition (not verified)

  • Our Meta and Google ad libraries show no advertiser for "mixtube", but those libraries only track listed products, so not finding it doesn't mean it isn't spending.
  • From October, daily installs jumped from about 1.7k to about 8k~12k. That slope can be explained by organic search alone, and it may also be boosted by Google App Campaigns (commonly used by apps like this). No evidence either way, so marked unverified.
  • We found no TikTok account of its own, and no creator content specifically pushing this Android package; the TikTok buzz is about the "Mixtube" name in general.

3.4 Retention and money

  • The reason people stay is "free + works offline"; users tolerate ads well (reviews say "there are ads, but not many and they're short").
  • The money comes from ads: app-open ads plus interstitials during search and download (the "3 ads" in the reviews). Ad rates in Latin America and the Philippines are low, but install cost is close to zero, so it pays.
  • Risk: another app from the same developer account, "Mixtube Pro-LyricLoop" (com.mixtubepro.lyricloop; Uptodown lists the developer as "Mixtube Music player", 2026-09-16 also has a 2.1.0 version), is already 404 on Play. Another Mixtube package, com.toto.jcyj.mvmix, has also been 404. So these packages keep getting pulled, and the same crew rotates through multiple packages to stay alive. The "02" in this app's package name also looks like a second account.

5. Differentiation

There is no functional differentiation: it's the same thing as dozens of "Offline Music" wrappers (YouTube search, playback, in-app caching, ads). Only three things set it apart:

  1. It carries the "Mixtube" name, which already has mindshare with users (it's been spread on TikTok and Reddit for years);
  2. It ranks #3 in "mixtube" search results;
  3. It's listed under Entertainment, where the bar for charting is lower.

These three points are why it broke out. But it doesn't own the name alone: Mixtube Lite, with the same name, is already nearly 2M installs, so this one is second tier.

6. How visible it is

  • No public revenue, no media coverage, and "mixtube" finds nothing on X (x-radar, last 30 days). The TikTok and Reddit discussion is about the "Mixtube" name, not this package.
  • But there are already many copycats: in Play search for "mixtube", the first dozen or so results are almost all same-name packages. This playbook is public and the space is already crowded.

7. What to borrow

  • Find product names that users spread organically on TikTok and Reddit but that have no official version on some platform (typically: hot on iOS, no official Android app), then grab the search slot for that name on that platform.
  • Ads appear only on actions the user starts themselves, like search and download; offline playback has no ads, so users tolerate ads more.
  • Pick a category with a low chart bar (Entertainment charts more easily than Music) and get chart exposure in Latin American and Southeast Asian stores.
  • Multiple packages and multiple accounts rotated to hedge takedown risk (this carries compliance and copyright risk, and we don't recommend it).

8. Still unclear

  • Whether it runs paid acquisition (Google UAC, Meta) is not covered by our ad libraries.
  • Whether there's a switch like "local player during review, YouTube features unlocked by region after launch" (inference, not verified by unpacking the app).
  • Whether this crew is the same as Mixtube Lite, tunedmusic, or jsstudio (emails and domains differ; no link visible).
  • How long it lasts: sibling packages under the same developer account have already been pulled.
  • Ad revenue is unknown; no data.
