MMAC G (Manman MMACG): anime merchandise collecting and trading · Manman Digital Marketing Technology Co., Ltd.

A lawyer quit to build a figurine app: he first built a LINE group of 6,000 people, then a video of "scanning prices at a toy store" pushed it to #6 in Taiwan's Shopping chart

What it is An app in Taiwan for anime figures, prizes and Ichiban Kuji draws. You can scan or photograph items to look up catalogs and prices, keep your own collection, and buy and sell inside it. The platform holds payments in escrow and takes a 1.8% commission.

Why it took off The founder ran a figure-news account for two years and launched with a LINE community of 6,000 people. In 28 October, the official account posted a Threads video, "photographing and scanning items at a toy store to check prices," which got 11k shares. Installs rose by nearly 3,000 within days, and it hit #6 in Taiwan's Shopping free chart.

BHow you could follow this Pick a different collectible category or a different Chinese-speaking market, and follow this order: build the community first, then launch a single-user tool that scans for prices and manages your collection, and add trading after that. For acquisition, use a short Threads or Instagram screen-demo video that shows just one feature.

B grade: the playbook is clear and few people know it yet, and there's room in other categories or regions. But the launch relied on the founder's two years of community building, which followers can't easily replicate. The trading layer also hasn't yet proven it can run (in the auction, 0 bids were placed and the hype has already faded). Buzz in niche circles

Taiwan's MMAC G (Manman MMACG) has hit 8,070 Google Play installs seven weeks after launch. It looks like an overnight hit, but it came from two years of community building by the founder. Two things are worth copying: launch a marketplace, but first give people a tool that's useful on its own; and shoot demo videos that show one feature each.

One Threads post and a resignation letter

On 2026 Sep 14, Huang Jiaxian posted on Threads: "MMACG has officially launched!!! It took two years, going from sharing figure news on Threads to building a LINE community of over 6,000 people." In the same post he wrote that to do this he "left the law firm where he'd worked for six years," and teamed up with friends who understand tech to start a company.

The company was registered in 2026 Apr 17 with paid-in capital of NT$10k (Taiwan Ministry of Economic Affairs company registry). His personal Threads account @jia_xian1027 has 6.1K followers, and the open LINE community "Huang Daxian's Figure Investigation Bureau" has about 6,190 members. On launch day the operators said on Instagram that members had passed 1,500 (this count includes web signups and is not the same as store installs).

So this wasn't a cold start. Huang spent two years as a figure-news account first, with a group of people already following him, and only then built the product.

What it is

An app focused on anime figures, prizes and Ichiban Kuji (plus a small amount of trading cards), in two layers:

  • Tool layer: catalogs, prices, barcode or photo recognition, and collection management. You can log what you've bought, what you paid, what it's worth now, and how many draws you've made from an Ichiban Kuji.
  • Trading layer: a C2C marketplace with four modes: spot, pre-order, auction, and buyout. Payments are held in escrow and only released to the seller after the buyer confirms receipt. The official account replied on Threads that the transaction fee is a flat 1.8% (10-04).

There are no in-app purchases on Play. Revenue comes from transaction commissions. Transaction volume hasn't been disclosed.

Why October's peak

The install curve has two spikes, both matching two videos from the Threads official account @mmacg.tw:

TimelineWhat happened on Threadsinstalls
10-01The two posts, "We made an app that checks catalogs and prices by scanning barcodes," and others, got about 1.1K–1.5K likes10-04~10-10 about 228 per day (estimated)
Night 10-28"When I browse a toy store, I photograph and scan items for catalog and price," now pinned, 10.8K likes and 11.6K shares10-30→11-03 total +2,919 (Google Play installs)

After the second video went out, it climbed on Taiwan's Play Shopping free chart from #10-29 to #109 at 11-01 to #6, and that day it was #56 on Taiwan's overall app chart. It reached #39 on Hong Kong's Shopping chart.

The video follows a fixed format: "When I……", first-person scene, plus a phone screen recording showing just one feature, ending with "Please share so more people know about this APP." It doesn't say "come buy figures." It says "stand in front of a toy shelf, scan once and know what this one is worth." Figure fans get it right away and are willing to forward it to friends.

Heat is cooling off: 11-05 installs only added 57, 11-06 shopping chart dropped to #47, Hong Kong to #119.

Where users come from

  • The founder's community: the LINE group plus the founder's personal Threads account handled day-one users and the first batch of sellers.
  • Demo videos from the Threads official account: most later installs came from these. The official account also set itself a slogan, "Scan every day until Manman reaches 100,000 users," keeps posting frequently, and cross-posts the same videos to Instagram Reels.
  • Limited-time "Founding" badges: people who registered between 9-13 and 10-14 and logged their first collection item get a permanent "Founding Collector" badge, and those who pass seller verification get "Founding Seller." It costs nothing, and it ties the "log your first item" step to signup.
  • The founder posts himself: trading groups on Facebook such as "My Hero Academia trade and sell," several model-kit groups, and the Dcard anime board all have his posts: "Spent almost two years, finally built an anime merchandise collecting app!"
  • Recruiting brick-and-mortar stores: Taichung's Bandai-certified prize store "Aiwan Toys" has joined. The official account is also hiring procurement and sales staff, possibly to bring its own inventory and fill the supply gap (inference).
  • Paid acquisition: no evidence of ad buys was found. Judging from the trend of "one video goes viral, installs spike the next day, then fall back," it doesn't look like ongoing spending (inference). Almost nobody talks about it on TikTok or X, and there's no media coverage.

What buyers get out of it

Several Play reviews state the pain point plainly:

  • "New platform is genuinely praiseworthy, not full of knockoffs like Shopee" (10-12)
  • "Categories are very detailed, layout is clean" (10-29)
  • "I spotted a flaw: shipping 65, buying a 400 prize + shipping 65. Spoiled by all the low-price, cheap-shipping e-commerce, I backed off" (10-09)
  • "Needs too many personal details to fully log in" (10-25,4 stars)

An old problem in Taiwan's figure-collecting scene: Shopee is full of knockoffs with inflated prices; Facebook group trades risk scams and buying the wrong version. MMACG's answer is authenticity guarantees, visible market prices, and low commission. Its weak spots also show up in reviews: cheap prize figures get scared off by shipping costs, and sign-up asks for too much information.

Who it's competing with

CompetitorsScaleHow it differs from MMACG
Shopee17.6M installs on Google Play globally, #1 in Taiwan's shopping chartGeneral e-commerce with the most traffic, but no collection catalog or price data
Facebook groups / LINE communitiesEvery series has its own trading groupThe current main battleground, with no guarantees and hard-to-find items
KOCAPlay 81k, reportedly over 200k MAUAlso moves group trading into an app, but focuses on K-pop photocards, with some anime collectibles on the side, and could easily expand into figures
Kapaipai32k on PlayTCG cards only
Hpoi figure wiki, MyFigureCollectionThe top catalog sites in mainland China / globallyHas catalogs and collection management, but no Taiwan-local guaranteed trading

In Taiwan, it has already been shown that moving group trading into an app can work (KOCA for photocards, Kapaipai for trading cards). Figures, prize items, and Ichiban Kuji have not had anyone focus on them. MMACG is aiming for exactly this gap.

What it has not yet proven

  • The marketplace is still cold: 11-06 On the official site, 2,875 figurines, 471 merch items and 5 cards are on sale, and the bidding area has 0 bids. The tool layer has users, but the trading layer hasn't got going yet.
  • Price data isn't very accurate: users on Threads point out that some prices are compared against Taiwan prices, others against Japanese auctions, and they aren't Japanese auction averages. Many PVC figures have no barcodes, and the same figure has several barcoded versions.
  • Where the catalog comes from: the source and copyright of the catalog data have not been disclosed, and the claimed quantities have not been verified.
  • Growth rides on single videos: when the next video doesn't go viral, installs drop back to a few dozen a day.

If it were you

B. The playbook is clear and few people know it yet, but the launch depends on two years of community building, which latecomers can't get quickly. Suited to people already active in a particular collecting circle, not to developers who spot an opportunity and start from scratch to find users.

Who it suits: someone who has already run an info account, group, or shop in a collecting niche for a while and has a community of thousands; a team with someone who can clean up the catalog and barcode data.

Who it doesn't suit: pure coders who know no one in the scene; anyone who wants to build a general secondhand marketplace and compete with Shopee on traffic; anyone expecting organic store-search traffic (MMACG's traffic almost all comes from Threads).

How to do it: change the category or the region rather than head-on competing for Taiwan figures. Categories could be LEGO, gacha, blind boxes, sports cards, or idol merch beyond K-pop. Regions could be Hong Kong and Macau (MMACG has already charted in Hong Kong but only ranked #119), the Chinese-speaking communities of Malaysia and Singapore, or markets outside Japan that still lack a traditional-Chinese or English data layer. Follow MMACG's order: first launch a "scan it and know what it is and what it's worth" tool plus collection management, which is useful to a single user; for items the scanner can't identify, let users add them to the library so the data grows with them; add the trading layer later, with commission kept low and payments held in escrow. Plan small-item shipping upfront (for example group orders or store pickup).

How to get users: build the community first, then launch. After launch, post screen-recorded demos on Threads or Instagram in the format "When I...", one feature per video, ending with a direct request to share; create a time-limited "founding" badge tied to "log your first collection"; bring in one or two physical shops as partners and make it news.

How much time you have: this playbook has no hard deadline; the difficulty is growing the community first. If you don't have a community yet, start now and plan on six months to a year. If you already have one, you can ship a version with just scanning and collection management within three months.

What would mean we misread it: ① Mànmàn's bidding volume and active listings stay flat into early 2027, which would mean the "tool first, trading later" path doesn't convert in collectibles, leaving only a price-lookup utility. ② KOCA or Shopee launches a figure catalog with barcode price lookup, and the gap closes. ③ Mànmàn's installs drop to zero after it stops posting on Threads, which would show it rode one viral video and has no retention.

Why MMACG (com.mmacg.app) showed up

Bottom line

It did not grow organically from zero. The founder spent two years building a private audience on Threads and LINE as a figure-news KOL (6.1K Threads followers, and the LINE group "黄大仙の公仔调查局" with about 6,200 members). On launch day the app pulled this audience in (1,500 sign-ups that day). After that, the official account posted demo short videos on Threads along the lines of "scan a barcode or snap a photo to check the catalog and prices": 10-01 one got about 1.5K likes, and 10-28 another reached 10.8K likes and 11.6K shares. On 11-03 installs jumped by +2,919 in a single day, driven by this video; it reached #6 on the Play Taiwan Shopping free chart (11-01). The buzz is now fading.

1. Data

  • Google Play cumulative global installs (our googleplay database, maxInstalls on the listing page): 10-29 4,546 → 11-03 7,617 → 11-06 8,070. +3,524 over the last 7 days, mostly concentrated between 10-31 and 11-03 (10-30 → 11-03 +2,919 total; the database has no new observations for 11-01 and 11-02, so this is a multi-day total). 11-04 +396,11-05 +57, quickly falling back.
  • Curve since launch (app_day_ext, AppstoreSpy estimates): 10-03 1,775; 10-04–10-10 about 228 per day (+1,594 for the week); 10-11–10-30 10–200 per day; 10-31–11-03 about 730 per day; then it dropped to 57. There were two spikes in total, and their dates line up with the two viral Threads videos (see section 3).
  • Chart rankings (chart_rank): Taiwan Shopping free chart 10-29 #109 → 10-30 #29 → 10-31 #12 → 11-01 #6 (that day #56 on the Taiwan overall App Store chart) → 11-06 #47; Hong Kong Shopping chart 11-01 #39 → 11-06 #119.
  • iOS (appstore database): App Store Taiwan rating count 10-28 is 27,11-06 is 37; best Shopping chart position #154. The iOS version 2026-07-17 went up first (likely launched as a test), and the Play store release came 2026-09-14 (the earliest review in the database is from 08-31).
  • Revenue: There are no in-app purchases on Play (iap_range is empty); the money comes from transaction fees. In a Threads reply, the official account said "the fee for in-stock, pre-order, and auction transactions is 1.8%, and online payment is also supported" (threads.com/@mmacg.tw/post/DeEUDLGGCDK, 2026-10-04). Transaction volume and revenue have not been disclosed.
  • Metric caveat: The operator 9-15 said on IG that "membership surpassed 1,500 on the first day of launch" (instagram.com/p/DdTs803P7hn). That figure includes web sign-ups and is not the same metric as Play installs.

3. Where users come from (with evidence)

  1. Founder's private-audience funnel (confirmed): 黄嘉贤's Threads (@jia_xian, 1027,6.1K followers) bio reads "sharing the latest figure/Ichiban Kuji news (黄大仙の公仔调查局)", and the LINE OpenChat "黄大仙の公仔调查局" has about 6,186–6,199 members (openchat.line.me). Launch post, verbatim: "Spent two years going from just sharing figure news on Threads to running a LINE community of over 6,000 people" (threads.com/@jia_xian1027/post/DdQOoQYHXDT). Essentially all 1,500 day-one sign-ups came from converting this pool.
  2. Official Threads account demo videos (confirmed, the main source of growth):
    • 10-01 ": We built an app that checks catalog and prices by scanning a barcode" got 1.1K likes and 439 shares. The same day, a companion post "Recording anime collections is so convenient now…" got about 1.5K likes and 1.2K shares (threads.com/@mmacg.tw/post/DddIPdWDIg6, Dd8If6ijN4B). This corresponds to about 228 installs per day during 10-04–10-10.
    • 10-28 20:24 ": When I'm walking through a toy store, I snap a photo and scan to check the catalog and prices", now pinned, with 10.8K likes, 269 comments, 752 reposts, and 11.6K shares (threads.com/@mmacg.tw; 10-30 snapshot shows 8.4K likes, 9.7K shares). The official account has kept replying in the comments (DfHcsPnGAKC, DfI6SqJkyqk). This corresponds to the +2,919 in 10-31–11-03 and the #6 Shopping chart position.
    • The format is a fixed template: "When I…" (first-person scenario plus a screen demo), and every post ends with "Please share so more people hear about this app." The official account also set itself a slogan, "One scan a day, until we hit 100,000 users," and keeps posting at a high frequency. 9-15
  3. Limited-time identity rewards (confirmed): 9-13–10-13 (later extended to 10-14), registering and logging your first collection item earns the permanent "Founding Collector" title; passing seller verification earns the "Founding Seller" title (FB launch post; Threads Dd8Iu3DGCBo). They also ran a typhoon-day challenge to upload collection photos. Free user acquisition and activation.
  4. Posting to FB groups and Dcard one by one (confirmed): The founder personally posted the launch in FB groups such as "我的英雄学院 交易 买卖区" (facebook.com/groups/134439204919395/posts/1397988555231114), and also posted "[Share] Took nearly two years, and finally built an anime merch collection app!" The same post appeared on the Dcard anime board (dcard.tw/f/acg/p/262301664) and several model groups (groups/290834355114048, 2554525668054871).
  5. Synced to IG Reels (confirmed): The same videos were cross-posted to IG @mmacg.tw (DdlFyvbR7Ei, DddI9nwMmih, Ddf6pcaRDKo "Can anime collecting really have a return on investment?").
  6. Recruiting merchants (confirmed): Taichung's "艾顽玩具" (a certified Bandai prize-figure store) joined, and the official account announced it as news (threads @mmacg.tw). They are also recruiting for "anime merch collection purchasing specialists and sales specialists" on Threads, suggesting the platform may be sourcing and stocking inventory itself.
  7. Paid user acquisition: No evidence found (ad libraries only track products on the watchlist, so not finding anything doesn't mean no spending). Judging by the shape of "one video blows up → single-day spike → quick fall-off," this doesn't look like sustained paid acquisition.
  8. TikTok / X / media: A TikHub search for "漫漫 mmacg" returned no related videos; x-radar has 0 posts in the last 60 days, and no media coverage was found.

4. Why it took off

  • The cold start did not begin from zero: Two years as a figure-news KOL plus a 6,000-person LINE group meant 1,500 sign-ups and the first batch of sellers on day one.
  • Using a "data tool" to solve the chicken-and-egg problem of a two-sided market: catalog, price lookup, scan recognition, and collection management (log costs, estimate value, even track how many Ichiban Kuji draws you've made). It's useful for one person without the market needing liquidity first. Users adopt it as a tool and stay, and only gradually become buyers and sellers. The viral demo videos also showcased tool functions (scanning to check prices in a toy store), not "come buy things."
  • Hitting the pain points of Taiwan's figure community: Shopee has lots of counterfeits and inflated prices, and Facebook group trading carries fear of scams and getting the wrong item. A performance guarantee + 1.8% low fee + transparent price data directly address these. A review quote: "The new platform deserves praise, unlike Shopee which is full of fakes."
  • Threads is where young Taiwanese people currently are: "When I… " screen-demo short videos can reach tens of thousands of shares under Threads' algorithm and sharing mechanics; the same content leaves no trace on TikTok.

5. Differentiation

Competitors each own one piece. Hpoi and MFC do catalogs and collection management. Shopee, Ruten and Facebook groups handle trading. KOCA and Kapapai run vertical trading for other categories. What sets 漫漫 apart: it puts traditional-Chinese figure catalog, price and barcode recognition (the data layer) and escrow-backed C2C trading (the transaction layer) in one app, focused on figures, prizes and Ichiban Kuji.

This differentiation is indeed why it took off: both viral videos sold the data-layer capability of "scan once and know what it is and what it's worth." But being seen depended on the founder's own community and Threads content strategy, not on app store search.

Weaknesses:

  • Price data is mixed: some is Taiwan retail, some is Japanese auction data, and it's not an average of Japanese auctions (feedback from user @chzllen 10-01).
  • Barcodes come in multiple versions, and many PVC figures have no barcode.
  • Shipping fees of NT$65 put people off low-price prizes (Play review).
  • Registration asks for too much personal information (Play review).
  • The card category is nearly empty (5 items for sale on the website); figures have 2,875 listings, merch 471, and auctions have 0 bids, so liquidity is still very thin.

6. How many people know about it

  • Small circle: Taiwan's Threads figure/anime community had one viral post, alongside organic posts in FB groups and on Dcard.
  • No media coverage, a few mentions on X 0, revenue undisclosed, nothing on TrustMRR.
  • Copycats: none found that clearly imitate it. The closest in Taiwan is KOCA (earlier, different category), and KOCA itself lists "ACG collectibles" and could move into figurines anytime.

7. What to borrow

  1. Build KOL / private community first, product second: a two-year intel account plus a LINE group solved cold start on launch day.
  2. Marketplace starts as tools: hook users first with single-player tools like a price guide, market prices, barcode scanning and collection management, let trading grow slowly on top; products users scan but can't find get auto-backfilled into the catalog ("if anyone has scanned it, you can find it next time"), so the database is built by users together.
  3. Threads "When I… :" demo video template: each post demos one jaw-dropping feature (scan an item, get its price), ends with a direct ask to share. Near-zero cost, tens of thousands of shares in Taiwan.
  4. Time-limited "Founding" badge: free, with a deadline, activation tied to "log your first collection item."
  5. The same playbook can be copied to other collectible categories and regions: Taiwan's LEGO, gacha capsules, trading cards; Hong Kong and Macau (already on the Hong Kong shopping chart); Southeast Asian Chinese speakers beyond the Traditional Chinese circle.

8. Still unclear

  • No data on actual GMV, transaction count or repeat purchases; the bidding area 0 offers suggest liquidity is still early.
  • Whether 11-03 holds after its peak: 11-05 is down to +57/day; it depends on whether the next video goes viral again.
  • "3.4M catalog entries" comes from a recall card and wasn't verified on the site; the source of the catalog data (scraped from Hpoi, MFC or Japanese auction sites?) and the copyright risk are unclear.
  • Whether there is paid promotion (Threads/Meta ads) can't be confirmed.
  • The platform is recruiting procurement specialists; whether it will shift to a self-run B2C model is unclear.
