"Afraid it'll charge like MovieBox": a free movie app disguised as an editor, and the row of reskinned shells behind it
What it is An Android app listed in the store as a video editor, which actually streams free pirated movies and TV to its target users and makes money from ads.
Why it took off MovieBox, the leading pirate app, started charging in 2026, and a group of users began passing around names of free alternatives in TikTok comments. This one posed as an editor and sits on Play, which is easier to install than a sideloaded APK, and it only charts in small category rankings in low-barrier markets like South Africa and Canada.
EHow you could play it Don't copy the shell. What's worth taking is watching for the moment a free giant starts charging, catching the users who leave with legal free content or a legal streaming aggregator, and treating the "what's the name" requests in TikTok comments as a demand signal.

MovieLo on Google Play calls itself a video editor. It was listed in Aug 26, and by Nov 6 it had 83,158 installs, rising 9,958 in the last week. Users install it expecting an editor and find a free library of new movies and shows. It isn't a single hit built by one person. It's one of more than a dozen "Cine*" shells built from the same template: store review sees an editor, the target audience sees pirated sources, each shell lives a month or two, and when one is banned, the next name takes its place. This piece covers why it gained traction and why you shouldn't touch it.
"I wouldn't dare tell more than five people"
In Oct 4, a user named Nobuhle Mkhasibe (a Zulu name, probably in South Africa) left a five-star review on MovieLo: "It's really the best. I wouldn't dare tell more than five people, afraid it'll turn paid like movie box. Free, few ads, though you still can't download, but better than nothing." 13 people marked it helpful.
The same day, MovieLo's installs jumped from about 7,400 the day before to 26,247, a single-day gain of 18,854 (daily installs backfilled by AppstoreSpy).
11 days later, another user, Danelle Christy, wrote a more telling review: "I think it works well, only issue is I tried installing it on my daughter's phone and it came out as a completely different app, a photo editor, kind of weird."
The store page says "cut, merge videos, add music, adjust speed, add filters," without a single word about movies. Yet nobody in the reviews is talking about editing.
What it actually is
A "cloak": the same install package, where the server checks the device, IP, install source, or a passphrase to decide whether you see the editor or the library. Reviewers and some regular devices see the editor. People who came from TikTok looking for the name see free movies.
Several claims on the store page also don't match:
| What the store says | Reality |
|---|---|
| Video editor | Reviews are all about watching movies; on another phone it installs as a photo editor |
| No ads | Integrates 13 ad network SDKs, plus AdMob mediation (AppGoblin, 10-05 scan) |
| Collects no data | Integrates AppsFlyer attribution and Firebase |
| Has always been MovieLo | The APKPure listing for this package still links to rivocut. It first launched as a "Rivocut" editor and was renamed later. |
1,688 ratings averaging 4.6 stars, with only 32 written reviews. Ratings equal 2% of installs, and only 2% of raters write anything, which likely means an in-app prompt asks for a rating (inferred). Over one month the version climbed from 1.1 to 1.5.2, and the latest update was Nov 4 (Google Play, 11-06).
Why now: MovieBox started charging
The most popular free pirate source in Africa and Southeast Asia is MovieBox (not on Play; you install the APK yourself). In 2026 it began charging for downloads and premium features, and complaints piled up: on r/Kenya someone asked "has anyone actually paid for this?"; TikTok has topic pages like "Does Movie Box Require Payment" and "How to Pay Moviebox in South Africa"; a user in Tanzania posted "I refuse to pay moviebox," which got 370k views (9-29).
A large group of users started looking for free alternatives. Legal free sources include Tubi, Pluto TV, and Plex, and in South Africa there's e.tv's eVOD, but none of them have much new content. Shells like MovieLo sit in the middle: they have new releases like MovieBox, cost nothing, and install directly from Play, which is a lower barrier than sideloading an APK and looks more "legitimate."
So its best rank is in South Africa: #26 in the Video Players & Editors free category chart. It's #29 in Canada (11-05 to 17), and also charts in Australia 45, the US 64, and the UK 69 (Google Play charts, 11-06). It has never made the overall chart. These category charts have low bars: a thousand or two installs a day is enough to crack the top 30.
Where users come from
Mostly TikTok, and not videos posted by the app itself.
In comment sections of free-movie videos, people keep asking what the name is today and what the code is: "Cómo se llama hoy 22 de octubre?" "name today and code?" "this one's dead, is there a new one?" For example, @tough_frr posted a video with #freemovies #appsmovie on Oct 19 that got 288k views and 256 comments; @mook0241 posted one on Oct 3 with 540k views and 1,733 comments (TikTok, 11-06). Names spread by word of mouth in comments. When a shell gets banned, people ask for the next name, and the operator doesn't spend a cent on brand promotion.
The African route is more direct: South African user @iam_cheses promoted #Cinetuck on Oct 26 (51k views), and Kenyan @ga.sh.eeri promoted #cinebeta (220k views). Both promoted the same kind of shell. I didn't find any comment naming MovieLo directly, so I can't tell which of these videos, if any, MovieLo actually benefited from.
There's another lead: the same developer, Khalid.bdarnh, previously published a shell called CineTap with the same "simple video editor" description. It lived on Play for 57 days, had its last update on Sep 30, was delisted in October, and got 5 to 60k installs before removal (AppBrain). MovieLo's single-day jump of 4k on Oct 18.8 comes right after CineTap stopped updating. Whether the old shell told users in-app to switch to the new one is unverified.
The money comes from ads: no in-app purchases, 13 ad SDKs. AppGoblin estimates about 23k monthly active users. At English-language ad rates, a shell paying for itself in two months is plausible, but actual revenue can't be found (estimate). It integrates AppsFlyer, which suggests channel attribution, but neither Meta nor TikTok ad libraries show ads from it or similar shells (not finding them doesn't mean they don't exist).
It's not one app, it's a row of them
On Play's "Video Players & Editors" chart, more than a dozen shells from the same template are listed at once (Google Play, 11-06):
| App | Launched | Installs | 7-day gain |
|---|---|---|---|
| Movirea | 5-09 | 318,853 | 45,497 |
| CineJet | 6-03 | 170,508 | Dropped off all charts |
| CineVault | 7-06 | 138,485 | 20,447 |
| CineTuck | 8-02 | 108,676 | 13,645 |
| CineLopi | 5-25 | 99,624 | 55,014 |
| RivoMovie | 8-13 | 86,758 | 19,785 |
| CineForge | 8-02 | 85,324 | 6,878 |
| MovieLo | 8-26 | 83,158 | 9,958 |
| CineCap | 9-02 | 61,739 | 33,288 |
| VidFlix | 10-09 | 52,126 | 50,660 |
The common traits are obvious: names with Cine or Movie; descriptions about cutting, trimming, and compressing; package names made of random words (com.moji.hug.animal, com.stick.pop.one); websites on random-letter .cc domains; privacy policies that open with the same template. Developer accounts are spread across Jordan, Hong Kong, and various company names. Whether one supplier is mass-producing these shells is unverified. MovieLo includes a Volcano Engine SDK, which hints the technical setup may come from a Chinese team (inferred).
Within this row, MovieLo sits in the middle to lower tier with nothing special about it. A TikTok user posted a screenshot saying "these two are actually the same app under two names," with 113 likes. Users can't tell them apart, and they don't need to.
If it were you
One-line verdict: Don't touch it. Its whole advantage comes from two things you shouldn't do: pirated sources, and getting past store review with fake identities. And the same chart already has a dozen identical shells queued up, with each one lasting a month or two.
Who it's for: People who want to understand how traffic flows when demand for free content suddenly surges. It's a very clean case study.
Who it's not for: Anyone who wants to copy one. The sources are infringing, the cloaking violates Play policy, and if caught, it's not just this shell that gets pulled. The developer account gets banned too. Those who can sustain this business are suppliers with shell templates, source backends, and a stack of developer accounts. An indie developer squeezing in is just one more name that will die at any time.
How to do it (the legal part you can take): Watch for the moment a free giant starts charging. Once MovieBox started charging, a large group of users in Africa and English-speaking regions actively went looking for alternatives, and whoever caught them first gets the traffic. The legal way to play is a free ad-supported product with licensed or public-domain content, or an aggregator of "what to watch tonight" built on legal free sources like Tubi, Pluto, or eVOD. But know that legal sources don't have new releases, which is exactly where pirate shells win, so you won't get the same conversion.
How to acquire users: Treat the "what's the name today" questions that keep appearing in TikTok comments as a demand signal: the most-asked category is the opportunity. Category charts in small English-speaking countries like South Africa and Canada have low barriers, and a thousand or two installs a day can reach the top 30, after which you can pick up organic search from the chart listing.
Deadline: No window worth rushing for. These shells' windows were measured in weeks to begin with.
Signs this read is wrong: ① MovieLo and this row of shells were still widely listed on Play in spring 2027, which means Google's cleanup of cloaked apps is slower than expected, and this business could last longer than two months. ② If a legal free source (like Tubi or eVOD) catches the users MovieBox lost in South Africa or Kenya and clearly grows, then the "serve legal demand" path is worth more than what's written here.

Why MovieLo (com.moji.hug.animal) could chart
In one sentence: the store listing says it's a video editor, but once installed it's an app that streams pirated movies for free and earns from ads (in the trade these are called "skin packs" or "cloak packs": review and some devices see an editor, while the target users see a movie library). It isn't a standalone product but one of many "Cine*" shells built from the same template, and the developer runs the same playbook. A shell can survive on Google Play for about two months, and while it lives it taps two sources of demand: first, MovieBox began charging in 2026, and users in Africa and English-speaking markets went looking for free alternatives; second, word of mouth on TikTok about "what this app is called today and what the code is."
Compliance note: this business depends on infringing content, plus deceiving store review. It's researched to understand where the traffic comes from, not as something to copy.

A few odd things
- The store page and the actual product don't match. The listing is generic editor copy, but the few most-upvoted reviews are all about watching movies:
- "Tap a show and a different one plays... but it's really free, with new movies and shows" (Darren Beckstead, 10-11,6 people found it helpful)
- "Installed on my daughter's phone and it's a photo-retouching app, totally different" (Danelle Christy, 10-15,9 people)
- "Haven't dared tell more than 5 people, afraid it'll turn paid like movie box... free, few ads, just can't download" (Nobuhle Mkhasibe, 10-04,13 people; a Zulu name)
- Source: Play listing, read via r.jina.ai; the us/gb/ca/au storefronts show the same three reviews.
- "A photo-retouching app on my daughter's phone" is direct evidence of a cloak. The server decides whether to show the editor or the movie library based on device, IP, install source, or code.
- Declares "no ads" yet integrates 13 ad SDKs. Monetization is ads; AppsFlyer shows it's doing channel attribution.
- The rating-to-install ratio is about 2%, and only 2% of ratings have written reviews. This basically points to in-app prompts for ratings, not users volunteering reviews.
- It was renamed. The APKPure link slug for this package is
rivocut(APKPure), suggesting it was first listed as Rivocut as an editor and later renamed MovieLo; a "rivocut movie app" search topic page also exists on TikTok (TikTok discover).
2. The same developer's previous shell: CineTap (delisted)
The same developer previously published CineTap (com.color.me.canvas), described the same way as a "simple video editor":
- Listed 2026-08, lived 57 days on Google Play before it was pulled 2026-10.
- Before removal it had roughly 5–63k installs, 1,594 ratings, 4.63 stars; last update 9-30 (v3.3).
- AppGoblin estimates 35k MAU, and it was still adding 29k installs the week before removal.
- Sources: AppBrain (Exa summary: "No longer on Google Play. It was there for 57 days, until October 2026"), AppGoblin, APKPure.
This shows the rhythm of the business: a shell lives one to two months, and when it's banned, the next one replaces it. The same developer also has SoakStory (short dramas) under their name.
MovieLo added 18.8k in a single day on 10-04, close to when CineTap stopped updating and was pulled. Whether CineTap pushed an in-app "switch to the new app" prompt that moved old users over is unverified.
3. Competitors: it isn't in the editor market, it's in the "free movie-watching" market
3.1 A same-template shell portfolio (Play "Video Players & Editors" chart, our library 11-06)
What they have in common:
- Names all include Cine or Movie;
- Store descriptions are all tools like editing, cropping, compression;
- Package names are random word combinations (com.moji.hug.animal, com.stick.pop.one, com.snapmood.emoji.cute);
- Websites all use random-letter .cc domains with privacy policies from one template. For example, ecobast.cc and shirara.cc both open with "## 1 Introduction / Welcome to X".

Structurally, this is most likely the same supplier (shell template plus a movie-source backend) mass-producing apps, or a group sharing one playbook with developer accounts registered under different names. Whether it's the same operator: unverified.
Within this batch, MovieLo's scale is mid-to-low tier and not special.
3.2 Free pirated movie sources (not on Play)
- MovieBox (APK, the moviebox.ng branch): the most mainstream free pirated app in Africa and Southeast Asia. Starting in 2026, it began charging for downloads and premium features, sparking many complaints:
- r/Kenya "Has anyone actually paid for this? This is movie box";
- TikTok topic page "Does Movie Box Require Payment" (2026-09-28);
- "How to Pay Moviebox in South Africa" (2026-07-27);
- Tanzania TikTok "I refuse to pay MovieBox" (@_lucresha_, 9-29.4M views).
- Others: Loklok (com.jupie.eddy, 2.07M installs on Play), NetMirror, and various "hidden app" websites.
3.3 legal free catalogs
Tubi, Pluto TV, Plex, Fandango's free tier; in South Africa, e.tv's eVOD (a July TikTok by @oneandonly_rori with 370k views) and Showmax. Their content is legal, but the new releases are thin, and that gap is what the piracy shells exploit.
3.4 "Movie Box" com.enjoy.moviebox
An old downloader on Play, listed in 2015, with 18.7M installs. It's not the same thing users mean by MovieBox. It ranks #22 in the ZA chart and picks up searches for the same name.
4. Where users come from
| Channel | Evidence | Confirmed? |
|---|---|---|
| TikTok "what's today's name + code" comment-section relay | Under free-movie TikToks, the comment sections are almost all "Cómo se llama hoy 22 de octubre?", "name today and code?", "it's dead, any new ones?". For example, @tough_frr (10-19.3M views, 256 comments) and @mook0241 (10-3.54M views, 1,733 comments). This content mostly reaches iOS users in Latin America and the US. Searching "movielo" or "rivocut movie" on TikTok also lands on these videos and the "rivocut movie app" topic page. However, the comments do not directly name MovieLo. | Ecosystem confirmed, MovieLo itself unconfirmed |
| African users, looking for a MovieBox replacement, pass along Cine* clone names by word of mouth on TikTok | @iam_cheses (10-2.65M views, South African slang "Sharp sharp") promotes #Cinetuck; @ga.sh.eeri in Kenya promotes #cinebeta (220k views). In MovieLo's comments, South African users compare it with MovieBox's paywall. ZA is its best-ranking store. | Similar apps confirmed, MovieLo inferred |
| User migration from the previous shell (CineTap) | Same developer: CineTap 9-30 stopped updating and was pulled in October; MovieLo 10-04 added 18.8k in a single day | Unconfirmed |
| In-store search | Only listed in the "Video Players & Editors" subcategory chart (top 30 in ZA/CA). Users get the name on TikTok, then search for it on Play. Search and category charts add some organic traffic on top. | Inferred |
| Paid acquisition | Integrates AppsFlyer attribution. Our Meta and TikTok ad libraries show no record of it or its peers (not being tracked doesn't mean it isn't spending). | Unconfirmed |
| Prompted reviews | 1,688 ratings, 32 written reviews, 4.6 stars, consistent with an in-app rating prompt. | Inferred |
| Where the money comes from | 13 ad SDKs plus AdMob mediation; no in-app purchases; users report "not many ads." A shell with 2–30k MAU selling ads in English-speaking markets could pay back in two months. Actual revenue unverified. | SDKs confirmed, revenue unverified |
5. Why it can break out
- Demand was amplified by the free leader starting to charge. MovieBox began charging in 2026 (visible on Reddit r/Kenya and TikTok topic pages). Large numbers of users in Africa and English-speaking markets are looking for free alternatives. MovieLo's South African reviews directly compare it with MovieBox's paid model.
- The cloak lets pirated content sit on Google Play. Store review sees a video editor; users see a catalog. For users, installing from the official store is easier and feels safer than sideloading an APK. That is the advantage over websites and APKs.
- TikTok name-relay comments provide a steady stream of demand. Users keep asking "what's the name today" in comments. When a shell gets taken down, users move to the next name, and the operator never has to spend money on the brand.
- Matrix strategy, swap shells freely. The same developer's CineTap was delisted after 57 days; MovieLo was still alive and growing about 10 weeks later. The chart had over a dozen shells on the same template at the same time, so total installs may be in the millions. The lifespan and name of any single shell don't matter.
- Surfaces in small charts, stays low-profile. It only appears in the "Video Players & Editors" category chart, not the overall chart. Small English-speaking markets like ZA have low thresholds, and a thousand or two daily installs can get it into the top 30.
6. Differentiation
- Differentiation for users: free, new releases, installable from Play, few ads. Compared with MovieBox (now paid, requires sideloading), Tubi and Pluto (legal but no new releases). That's why it took off.
- No differentiation among the shells: catalogs, UI, and templates are nearly identical, and users can't tell them apart. One user screenshotted and said "these two are actually the same app under two names" (@mook0241 comments, 113 likes). The extra volume MovieLo gets over other shells comes mainly from launch timing and lifespan, not the product itself.
7. Visibility
- No record of its name in media, X (x-radar: 60 posts in the last 0 days), Product Hunt, or Reddit. Revenue is not public.
- "This kind of app" spreads widely among TikTok end users, but MovieLo is just one name among many.
- The category is crowded: more than a dozen shells on the same template are running in parallel on the same chart.
8. What others can learn (without the piracy)
- Watch for the moment a free leader starts charging. Users flood out looking for substitutes, and whoever catches them first gets the traffic. The legal version is offering a free, ad-supported alternative.
- The "what's today's name" relay in comments is itself a distribution channel. The names people ask about most reveal the demand. A legal product can respond to these questions on TikTok.
- Break in through small-country category charts. ZA and CA category charts have low thresholds; a thousand or two daily installs can reach the top 30, and the chart then feeds organic search.
- Use an in-app prompt to push ratings above 4.6.
9. Still unclear
- Whether the Cine* shells come from the same operator or supplier (the Volcengine SDK hints at a technology stack possibly from a Chinese team; unverified).
- Which TikTok accounts MovieLo's users come from, and whether CineTap's users were redirected to MovieLo.
- Whether it runs paid acquisition (it has AppsFlyer, but the ad libraries show nothing).
- How much ad revenue it makes, and when it will be delisted.
