> Revenue estimates for YarnPal, a crochet learning app (about $500k/month), spread across the web. Vietnamese tool maker MONIQ TAP copied it within weeks using an off-the-shelf template and listed it with titles stuffed with crochet, knit, and row counter to grab searches. It likely started with paid acquisition, then pushed ratings to 4.5 with prompts.

Crochet Knit Yarn: Row Counter · MONIQ TAP., CO LTD

# A Vietnamese tools shop copied YarnPal for a crochet row counter: 70k installs in just over two months, mid-pack among the copycats

**What it is** A row counter app for crochet and knitting: tap once per row to track where you are, import charts to follow along, with stitch tutorial videos. Ads plus subscriptions make the money.

**Why it spread** The revenue estimate for crochet learning app YarnPal (about $500k/month) went viral online. Vietnamese tools shop MONIQ TAP cloned it from an existing template and launched within weeks, stuffing the title with crochet, knit, and row counter to grab search traffic. It likely started with paid acquisition, then used pop-up prompts to push its rating to 4.5.

**D** **How you could follow it** Don't build another beginner tutorial plus counter. If you want to do yarn, build deeper tools for people who already crochet (chart views that highlight row by row, voice or watch counting). Or build crochet content on TikTok and partner with creators first, then attach the app.

Grade D: it is itself a copycat. YarnPal's top-line revenue has been widely reported, and at least five or six clones appeared in 2026, several with bigger budgets and faster growth. Following its playbook means competing on paid acquisition bids, which indie developers can't win. Few people know about it yet

Crochet Knit Yarn: Row Counter is a row counter app for crochet and knitting, with beginner tutorial videos. It reached 73k installs on Google Play in just over two months, which looks like a small hit. Look closer and it's another product: it comes from a Vietnamese tools app factory that also makes an IPTV player, CarPlay casting, and an AirTag detector. By the time it launched, the revenue estimate for crochet learning app YarnPal had already spread widely online. The product has nothing new. It runs on a factory template, keyword-stuffed titles, suspected paid acquisition, and prompts that push users to rate it. At least five or six copycats launched alongside it, and several grew faster. This is worth understanding, not copying.

### A review of "I'll give it 5 stars right after downloading"

On Sep 2026 6, 12 days after launch, a user named Naya left a review on Google Play:

> "im not very new to crochet but it can help me i also just dowloaded it today to rate it a 5" (I'm not new to crochet, but it could help. I just downloaded it today, and I'm here to give it 5 stars.)

The developer replied the next day: "Hi Naya, thank you so much for the 4-star review… If you have suggestions that could make it a 5-star experience, please let us know." The reply is template boilerplate and doesn't even match the star count.

This review reveals half of its playbook: a rating prompt right after install, and every review answered within a day. On Play it has 2,117 ratings averaging 4.5 stars, with 80% five-star (Google Play, 11-06). Over the past 8 days it added 395 ratings and 15,266 installs, so roughly 2.6% of new installers left a rating. Tools apps rarely hit that rate, which suggests the app pushes rating prompts hard (inference).

### What it is

Open it and you get a counter: tap once per row to record which row, round, or repeat you're on. You can import a chart and follow it row by row. Each project has a timer, and multiple projects are stored separately. The tutorial part is an explanation of stitch abbreviations and videos. The store page's first line reads "Learning crochet or knitting and always losing your place in a pattern?"

Money comes from three places: ads, in-app purchases ($3.99–$24.99 each), and subscriptions. The description ends with "Non-subscribed users can use certain premium features a limited number of times per day," meaning free users get a few uses of premium features daily. This sentence is shared across the company's tools apps.

The developer is MONIQ TAP, a company in Ho Chi Minh City that has launched about 30 apps on Play since 2023, with roughly 10M cumulative installs (AppBrain). Its main products are IPTV Smart Player (3.13M installs), Car Play Connect (1.54M), Teleprompter (1.01M), and OBD2 Scanner (940k). Several have charted in top-grossing category rankings in South Africa, Australia, and the US (Google Play, 11-06). Crochet is one of its few lifestyle products.

### How much it grew

| Date | Total installs |
|---|---|
| 09-02 | 190 (third-party estimate) |
| 09-08 | 1,919 (third-party estimate) |
| 09-09 | 12,937 (third-party estimate, up 11k in one day) |
| 10-04 | 31,526 (third-party estimate) |
| 10-29 | 58,018(Google Play) |
| 11-06 | 73,284(Google Play) |

Over the last 8 days it averaged about 1,900 installs per day. It jumped 15k on day 11 after launch, then grew in bursts rather than spreading steadily by word of mouth.

The charts tell a clearer story. It only ever charted in the Lifestyle category on the Top Free charts: 10-29 #53 in the UK, #62 in Canada, #195 in Australia. By 11-06 it had dropped out in the UK, Canada and Australia, leaving only #109 in Nigeria and #185 in Vietnam, with a few days in the Philippines in between. It never charted on any Top Grossing chart.

### Where users come from

**Store search, confirmed.** The title "Crochet Knit Yarn: Row Counter" packs four terms, crochet, knit, yarn, and row counter, into one line. The description repeats "crochet row counter," "knitting row counter," and "beginner." Searching "crochet knit" on the US Play store, it ranks #8 (11-06). Searching "crochet counter," it doesn't make the top 12.

**Paid acquisition, inferred, no direct evidence.** Charting first in the UK, Canada, and Australia, then spreading traffic to cheaper markets like Nigeria, Vietnam, and the Philippines, is a common pattern with Google app ads. Add the surge on day 15 and this company's usual playbook of paid acquisition plus subscriptions, and they are likely spending. We can't see how much.

**Content and creators: none.** Searching "crochet row counter app" on TikTok returns videos for other apps like Loopsy, My Row Counter, and Knotty. None are from this one. Nobody on X or Reddit is talking about it either.

### Who it's competing with

This niche started with YarnPal. Singapore company PIXELCELL launched on iOS at the end of 2024, then came to Play in August 2025. It now has 4.82M installs on Play, still adding 90k over the last 7 days, and charted #8 in France's top-grossing Lifestyle category (Google Play, 11-06). Third-party estimates put its monthly revenue around $500k. The figure circulates widely. A LinkedIn post is titled "Crochet App YarnPal Earns $610K in March," and site builder Appy Pie posted "YarnPal is estimated to earn $500k a month, so we built one."

That set off a wave of clones in 2026:

| Product | Launched | Play installs (11-06) | past 7 days |
|---|---|---|---|
| YarnPal | 2025-08(Play) | 4.82M | +91k |
| My Row Counter (Germany, an established pure counter) | 2018 | 1.26M | +5k |
| LoopPal | 2026-03 | 746k | +52k |
| Learn Crochet & Knitting(Smart AI Utility Apps) | 2026-08-19 | 323k | +38k |
| Crochet for Beginners: Learn(SaverHub Apps) | 2026-09-09 | 206k | +84k |
| **Crochet Knit Yarn: Row Counter** | 2026-08-25 | 73k | +15k |

The SaverHub clone, launched two weeks after YarnPal, is nearly 3 times bigger than this one, gaining 84k a week but with only 50 ratings. It looks purely paid. Smart AI Utility, launched around the same time, is over 4 times bigger. Everyone is playing the same game, and winning is about ad budget, which this app doesn't have.

The durable players took a different route. My Row Counter has spent eight years building tools, relying on TikTok creators and word of mouth, and ranks #1 for "row counter" on the US Play store. Loopsy on iOS partners with a crowd of creators using #loopsypartner. Knotty went deep on row-by-row chart tracking.

### What it ran on

- **The niche was proven** : YarnPal's revenue estimate was public, which told every tools shop there was money here.

- **A factory base** : subscriptions, ads, ASO, and paid acquisition all come as ready-made templates. Reskinning and launching takes just weeks.

- **Grabbing search terms** : the title claims both the category keywords and "Row Counter."

- **A polished rating** : 4.5 stars and over two thousand reviews lift store-page conversion.

On product, it differs little from its rivals. Its reach of 70k comes from the four points above. Anyone can do those, and several have already done them better.

### If it were you

**One-line verdict** : don't follow it. It is itself a copycat. YarnPal is ahead of it, a row of clones with bigger budgets sits beside it, and the top-line revenue is public knowledge.

**Who it suits** : an app factory that already has a paid acquisition team and subscription templates and wants to add another category. Even for a team like that, entering now means being the seventh or eighth player, competing only on bid price.

**Who it doesn't suit** : indie developers without an ad budget. A copycat that starts from search terms and paid acquisition, with no content channel, is capped at about where this one is now.

**If you still want to build in yarn** : don't make another beginner tutorial plus counter. Go in one of two directions. First, go deep on tools for people who already crochet: photograph a chart and get row-by-row highlighting, link multiple counters, add voice counting, and tap a watch to count a row. Second, lead with content. Learn from Loopsy and My Row Counter: partner with crochet creators on TikTok, or make short videos on common beginner mistakes, then attach the app.

**How to get users** : through content and creators, not paid ads. Crochet is a big topic on TikTok. My Row Counter's creator videos have reached several hundred thousand views each, and competitors have shown this path works.

**When to move** : there's no clear window. The clone wave is still rising, and paid acquisition gets more expensive the longer you wait. But the depth-of-tool and content routes don't depend much on timing.

**What would prove this read wrong** : if it charts in the top-grossing Lifestyle category in the US, UK, or Germany in the next month or two, or passes 300k installs and catches up with the clones launched alongside it, that would mean the factory clone play still has room, and entering late can still pay.

Where users come from

- **Verified** **Store search / ASO** : the title "Crochet Knit Yarn: Row Counter" packs four high-frequency terms, crochet / knit / yarn / row counter, into one line. The description repeats keywords. Searching "crochet knit" on the logged-out US Play store, it ranks #8 (Jina scrape 11-06).

- Inferred **Paid acquisition (likely Google App Campaigns)** : the AppstoreSpy curve shows 09-08 → 09-09 jumping from 1,919 to 12,937 in one day, then growing in bursts. It charted first in the UK, Canada, and Australia (10-29), then shifted toward low-cost markets like Nigeria, Vietnam, and the Philippines. The developer's other tools apps chart in multiple countries' top-grossing lists, which is a typical paid-acquisition-plus-subscription pattern. Our Meta and Google ad libraries don't track it, so we can't confirm this directly.

- **Verified** **Rating prompts** : new ratings make up about 2–3% of new installs (8 days: +395 ratings / +15,266 installs), 80% of them five-star (histogram 1,639/2,051). Reviews say things like "just downloaded it today to rate it 5 stars", and the developer replies to each one.

- Inferred **Content / creators (TikTok, Reddit, X)** : TikHub searches for "crochet row counter app" and "crochet knit yarn app", and x-radar for moniq, turned up nothing tied to it. Loopsy, My Row Counter and Knotty, all in the same niche, run TikTok content. It doesn't.

## Crochet Knit Yarn: Row Counter(com.moniq.crochet.knit.rowcounter)

**In one line** : MONIQ TAP, a Vietnamese app factory, cloned YarnPal into a crochet/knitting row counter and beginner tutorial app. It got traction by riding YarnPal's proof that the niche pays, using the factory's own templates and paid acquisition, stuffing keywords into the title, and pushing rating prompts hard. The product itself has no differentiation. At 73k installs after two-plus months, it ranks mid-pack among the copycats.

### 1. What it is

- Developer: MONIQ TAP COMPANY LIMITED, Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam (Huy Can St., No. 175, tax ID 0318473738). Website moniqtap.com, hiring product, UI, marketing interns and an Android developer (moniqtap.com/career). AppBrain shows it has published about 30 apps on Play since 2023, roughly 10M installs total. The iOS account is under the personal name Phong Pham.

- The portfolio is a classic tool-app factory: IPTV Smart Player (3.13M installs, Tools Top Grossing in South Africa), Car Play Connect (1.54M, Auto Top Grossing in Australia), Teleprompter (1.01M), OBD2 Scanner (940k), Air Tag Detector (530k), Onn Roku remote (140k, House & Home Top Grossing in the US store), and more. The 9 apps in the library total about 7.4M installs (googleplay library app_profile, 11-06). The crochet app is one of its few lifestyle products, and its package prefix differs from the rest (com.moniq. instead of com.moniqtap.).

- Features (Play store listing): row and round counting, import pattern charts to follow along, project timers, multi-project management, stitch abbreviation explanations and tutorial videos. The developer's replies to reviews also mention "auto row tracking".

- Monetization: "Contains ads" plus in-app purchases at $3.99–$24.99. The description says "Non-subscribed users can use certain premium features a limited number of times per day", the same subscription template their other tool apps use.

- Play launch 2026-08-25, version 1.3, rating 4.53, histogram [95, 31, 111, 175, 1639] (googleplay library app_snap, 11-06).

### 2. Data

| Date | Total installs | Source |
|---|---|---|
| 09-02 | 190 | AppstoreSpy estimate |
| 09-08 | 1,919 | AppstoreSpy estimate |
| 09-09 | 12,937 (single day +11k) | AppstoreSpy estimate |
| 10-04 | 31,526 | AppstoreSpy estimate |
| 10-29 | 58,018 | googleplay library |
| 11-06 | 73,284 | googleplay library |

- +15,266 installs over the last 8 days, about 1,900 installs/day; growth comes in spikes (10-31 +4,479, 11-03 +7,091, and the days in between are 0 because Play doesn't refresh the numbers every day).

- Rating 1,722 → 2,117 (8 days +395, 37–72 per day). New ratings make up about 2.6% of new installs, high for a tool app, which points to strong in-app rating prompts.

- Charts (chart_rank): it has only charted in the Lifestyle free category. First the UK 10-29 53, Canada 62, Australia 195, Nigeria 168. By 11-06 it had dropped out of the UK, Canada and Australia, leaving Nigeria 109 and Vietnam 185, with a brief stint in the Philippines. It has never charted in any Top Grossing list.

### 3. Competitors

| Loopsy(Springtown Labs) | iOS 2025-05 | iOS US 17k ratings | Runs TikTok creator partnerships (#loopsypartner), positioned as project management plus inspiration. |
| Crochet Patterns & Row Counter(Crochet App SIA) | 2020 | 770k on Play | Established patterns + counter |
| knitCompanion | 2016 | Play 270k; iOS 6,910 rating | A paid professional tool for experienced knitters and crocheters |
| Crochet and knitting casual games (Yarn Fever 14.8M, Color Knitzy, Knit Out and others) | 2025– | tens of millions | Not the same thing, but it shows yarn and knitting as a theme trending overall over 2025–26. |

Data sources: googleplay library app_profile (11-06), iTunes Search API (US store), Peekly and Trends.vc web pages.

**Bottom line** : this niche is far from empty. The leader YarnPal's revenue has been publicly estimated and widely reshared. A LinkedIn post reads "Crochet App YarnPal Earns $610K in March", and an Appy Pie post says "YarnPal is estimated to bring in $500K a month. So we rebuilt an app like it". Since 2026 3–September, at least 6 clones have appeared, and Moniq is one of them.

### 4. Where users come from

1. **Store search / ASO (confirmed)** : the title crams in crochet, knit, yarn and row counter, and the description repeats "crochet row counter", "knitting row counter" and "beginner". Searching "crochet knit" in the logged-out US Play store, it ranks #8 (Jina scrape, 11-06). Searching "crochet counter", it doesn't make the top 12.

2. **Paid acquisition (inferred, not confirmed)** : on launch day 15, installs jumped from 1,919 to 12,937 (AppstoreSpy estimate), and growth has been pulsed since. It charted first in the UK, Canada and Australia, then moved to Nigeria, Vietnam and the Philippines. That fits the typical Google App Campaigns path: test in Tier-1 markets, then spread volume into cheaper regions. The developer's other apps use a "paid acquisition + subscription" model and have charted in several countries' Top Grossing lists, so they have the spend capacity. Our Meta and Google ad libraries don't track Moniq or YarnPal, which doesn't mean they aren't advertising.

3. **Rating prompts (confirmed)** : new ratings are about 2.6% of new installs, five-star ratings are 80%, and a reviewer wrote "i also just dowloaded it today to rate it a 5". The developer replies to every review within 1 days.

4. **Content / creators (none found)** : TikHub searches for "crochet row counter app" and "crochet knit yarn app" returned only videos from Loopsy, My Row Counter, Knotty, Yarniby and MaeKit, none from Moniq. x-radar finds nothing. Reddit only has discussion threads about YarnPal.

### 5. Why it got this far (to the 70k level)

- **The niche is proven** : YarnPal showed that teaching beginners to crochet can be a subscription business, its revenue estimates are public, and tool factories followed.

- **Factory capability** : Moniq has ready-made subscription and ad templates, ASO playbooks and paid acquisition experience, so a new skin takes only a few weeks.

- **Keyword placeholding** : stuffing the title with "crochet / knit / row counter" captures those search terms.

- **Rating packaging** : a 4.5-star rating with 2,000 reviews lifts store page conversion.

### 6. Differentiation

Almost none. Row counting, pattern import, timers and stitch tutorials are all offered by YarnPal, My Row Counter and LoopPal, and some go deeper. Its one distinguishing feature is tying the "Row Counter" search term to a beginner positioning, which is an ASO difference, not a product one. It isn't what got it installs. Heat in the niche and the factory's distribution did. Meanwhile, copycats that launched around the same time (SaverHub, Smart AI Utility, GAMEPEAK) grew faster, so anyone can run this playbook, and the winner is whoever has the bigger ad budget.

### 7. What to borrow

- Target niches where a single product's revenue has been publicly estimated, clone it from a template within 4–8 weeks, stuff core keywords into the title, and layer three monetization tiers: subscription, a daily free-use limit, and ads.

- Push rating prompts hard at launch and reply to every review, so the store page looks polished.

- The lesson: a late clone with no content channel tops out in the middle. The leader YarnPal and the veteran My Row Counter rely on heavy paid acquisition and TikTok creators. Open space remains in tool depth (such as Knotty's row-by-row chart tracking) and community content (such as Loopsy's creator partnerships).

### 8. Still unclear

- Whether it runs ads and how much (ad libraries don't track it).

- Revenue: it has never charted in Top Grossing, so it probably earns mostly from ads, and subscription conversion is unknown.

- Whether an iOS version exists: no crochet app turned up under the Phong Pham account.

- The source of 09-09's single-day +11k: paid acquisition, store featuring, or an AppstoreSpy estimation artifact.
