# A text saying "the government is sending you ₦50k" sent MTN's wallet app to No. 1 on Nigeria's overall chart

**What it is** A phone wallet from Nigeria's largest carrier, MTN. Your phone number is your account. You can transfer money, buy airtime and data, pay bills, and save. A new app re-listed after a system change.

**Why it blew up** In August the old app was shut down, and millions of legacy users had to move to a new one. In October 30, the government launched a monthly ₦50,000 relief payment. It's one of five designated disbursement wallets, and the account number that ends the payout SMS is its own. By November 4 it hit #1 overall.

**D** **How you could follow** Not recommended. Only two things are worth learning: when switching apps, set a shutdown date for the old version and add a small perk to move old users over; and treat the government's list of approved payout channels as a chart preview.

Grade D: the surge came from forced migration of existing users, eligibility as a government payout channel, and carrier distribution. Followers can get none of those three. A large cluster of negative reviews shows the product isn't what's driving growth, and there's no gap to slip into. Public / widely discussed

MoMo PSB NG is the mobile wallet of MTN, Nigeria's biggest carrier. It only launched at the end of August, and from Nov 4 it climbed to #1 on the Nigeria Google Play overall free chart, passing WhatsApp and OPay. It didn't blow up because the product was great. Two outside events hit it back to back: first, the parent company shut down the old app and users had to move over; then the government started paying out relief funds and named it as one of five payment channels. This piece breaks down how many users each of those two events brought in, and why small teams can't copy it.

### One text

On Nov 2, an Instagram account called Comr Aliyu Muhammad reposted a screenshot of a text message, which read:

> Relief! FGN has selected you to receive ₦50,000 under NERSI to help with living costs. This is FREE. Dial *671*0# to accept.

It means: the federal government selected you for a ₦50,000 living allowance, free, dial *671*0# to accept. He added below: if you got this text, download the MoMo PSB app and register to claim this 50k.

The same day, someone posted in a Nigerian Facebook community group: "Whether or not you were selected, open a wallet on MoMo first, using the app or by dialing *671#." Another news page said some MTN users saw pop-ups on their phones asking them to "press 1" to accept the money. That post had 1,000 likes and 330 comments.

*671# is MoMo's USSD code. In other words, the text announcing government money ends with MoMo's account-opening entry point.

### What it is

MoMo PSB is MTN Nigeria's "payments service bank", licensed by the central bank. It can take deposits and transfer money but can't lend. Its model is that your phone number is your account: dial *671# on an MTN SIM to open one, with no internet and no bank branch needed. The app handles transfers, airtime and data, bill payments, and savings, and you can apply for a physical debit card or a virtual card. The store page's first line reads "Now available in Nigeria".

This app is one of several country-specific releases that parent company MTN Group Fintech publishes from the same codebase. The same developer account also has a multi-country MoMo app with 16.2M installs.

### Wave one: old app shut down, old users forced to move (8–October)

In August 2026, MoMo PSB moved its whole system onto Ant Group's Alipay+ infrastructure, and on Aug 28 announced that the "platform upgrade is complete." The new system came with a new app. The official Instagram and X posts told users to search "MoMo PSB NG" on Google Play, Huawei AppGallery, Palmstore, and the App Store. The copy read: "The old app shuts down in 4 days; upgrade today and get 500MB of data." At the same time the CEO was replaced: the new CEO is Bode Abifarin, former COO of Flutterwave, who took office on Sep 1.

So this app didn't grow from zero. It was listed on Aug 24, and by Sep 3 had about 216k installs (AppstoreSpy estimate). On Sep 10 it did roughly 180k in a single day, and in early October it was still at hundreds of thousands a day for a few days. By Oct 29 the cumulative total reached 1.44M (Google Play). These peaks roughly match migration deadlines and push notifications (inferred, not checked one by one). By the middle to late part of October, daily installs had fallen back to ten or twenty thousand.

The people who moved were existing users. MTN Nigeria's Q3 earnings say MoMo PSB had 3.2M monthly active users at the end of September, Q3 transaction volume rose 69% quarter over quarter, and revenue for the first three quarters grew 102% (as reported by Nairametrics, 11-02). These people already had money in their wallets. Once the old app closed, they couldn't use it without installing the new one.

### Wave two: the government sends money, and it is one of five channels (from Oct 30)

On Oct 30, the Federal Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Reduction announced the launch of NERSI (National Emergency Relief and Stabilization Intervention), paying poor and vulnerable households ₦50,000 a month, deposited into mobile wallets (reported by Punch, BBC Pidgin, and Vanguard). The government page lists only five payout providers: ALAT (Wema Bank), MoMo, NairaGram, OPay, and Moniepoint. Selected people receive a text and reply to consent, and the system opens a wallet bound to their phone number and national ID (NIN), with ₦50k deposited that they can withdraw at POS agents. The government page's instructions for MoMo say: find an agent, dial *671*0#, or "use the MoMo NG App".

The timing lines up exactly:

| Date | Nigeria Google Play Top Free chart | New ratings that day |
|---|---|---|
| 10-29 | #24 | — |
| 10-30 | Government announces NERSI | 43 |
| 11-03 | #11 | 80 |
| 11-04 | #1 | 91 |
| 11-05 | #1 | 179 |
| 11-06 | #1 | 554 |

Nov 6: the data jumped again. 94k new installs in a single day, 1.65M cumulative.

This wasn't MoMo alone. The other payout channels got pulled up too. NairaGram had only 100k installs in total, and its new ratings on November 5 and 6 were 91 and 256, normally single digits per day. It also climbed into the No. 6 spot on Nigeria's Finance chart. OPay got 3,611 new ratings in one day in October 31, where it normally gets in the low 400s.

One caveat: among the nearly 400 recent Google Play reviews we could see, none directly mention NERSI or 50k. Most people claim the money by dialing USSD, and only some download the app. So the conclusion that relief payments pushed it to No. 1 rests on timing matching and channels rising together. It's a fairly confident inference, but no review directly proves it.

Also, in early November it climbed the free Finance charts in Canada, the Netherlands, the UK, the US, and Germany, and reached No. 3 in Canada. The most likely explanation is Nigerians abroad helping family back home open accounts and check eligibility (inferred, not verified). Finance charts in these countries have low thresholds, so a few thousand installs can get an app listed, and inflated installs can't be ruled out.

### What users are complaining about

Ratings are climbing, but the reviews are ugly. One-star reviews from November 3 to 5 are almost all stuck at the login step:

- "Do you have a grudge against sending OTPs? It keeps requesting the OTP, and after the attempts run out I still don't get it." (11-05)

- "Right after updating the app, I can't log in at all." (11-05)

- "Registration succeeded, but it keeps asking me for a MoMo PIN I never set, and 'Forgot PIN' doesn't work." (11-05)

- "I've been trying to reset my PIN for 5 months... in the end they even blocked the customer service number." (11-04)

- "OTPs take days to arrive, so I keep using OPay." (11-04)

Most five-star reviews are short, like "nice" and "fantastic app." One five-star review from Nov 3 is more specific: "Transfers, bill payments, and airtime/data purchases all work smoothly. Please make OTPs faster and add a dark mode."

This suggests users installed it not because it's better than OPay, but because their money is already there, and government payouts land there too. The product experience itself did little to drive this surge.

### Who it's competing with

| Name | Installs (Google Play, 11-06) | How it differs from MoMo |
|---|---|---|
| OPay | 85M, +7k in 460 days, #2 on Nigeria's overall chart | Independent fintech with a larger agent network; also an NERSI channel |
| PalmPay | 51.2M | Distributed through preinstalls on Transsion phones |
| Moniepoint | 27.4M | Started as a merchant POS business; also an NERSI channel |
| Smartcash PSB(Airtel) | 14.9M | Another telco-run payments bank with the closest model, but not an NERSI channel |
| Kuda | 14M | Pure digital bank with no telco or USSD distribution |
| ALAT (Wema Bank) | 5.08M | Digital bank of a licensed bank; also an NERSI channel |

No company in this table is a small team. Running a wallet in Nigeria means either holding a CBN license or piggybacking on a licensed institution, and MoMo also has the telco behind it.

### If it were you

**Verdict** : Don't follow this. It took off on three things followers can't get: several million existing users forced to migrate, eligibility as a government payout channel, and the number and SMS reach of Nigeria's largest carrier. Why users came had little to do with how well the product is built.

**Who it's for** : Only two kinds of people. Companies already sitting on large existing user bases who need to swap packages or rebuild their stack can learn how MoMo moved its old users to the new app. People studying emerging-market fintech apps can learn from its chart signals.

**Who it's not for** : Indie developers who want to build a wallet or money-transfer app in Nigeria. You can't get around the three hurdles: the license, the agent network, and carrier distribution. Riding the NERSI hype with tools like "check your eligibility" or "how to claim the money" won't work either. The government and channels keep warning people not to share their PIN or OTP, so these apps are easily mistaken for scams, and app stores won't pass financial-category compliance requirements.

**How to do it** : Two tactics are worth borrowing.

1. When migrating users to a new package, set a shutdown date for the old version and add a small perk. MoMo's approach was "old app shuts down in 4 days, upgrade today and get 500MB free." Within weeks, existing users had moved to the new app, which launched with a chart position and an installed base.

2. Treat government transfers, subsidies, and tax refund events as chart previews. Once a list of "designated payout channels" is published, the wallets on it surge onto the overall chart within days. NairaGram, with 100k installs, did exactly this. People doing data, paid acquisition, or competitor monitoring can use these announcements as signal sources.

**How to acquire users** : Not applicable here. It spent almost nothing on acquisition this time; new users came from government SMS and MTN pop-ups. I found no public evidence of paid acquisition or influencer campaigns.

**Deadline** : There's no rush. NERSI payouts are monthly, so when the second round lands in early December, check the rankings of these channels again to test whether "payout day equals chart-surge day" holds.

**Where I could be wrong** : (1) After this NERSI wave passes, if it still holds a top-10 spot on Nigeria's overall chart into mid-December with no new external event, the product has started gaining organic pull, and I underestimated it. (2) If a small unlicensed app built on "how to claim 50k" content reaches the top 50 on Nigeria's overall chart without being pulled, then the window these events leave for small teams is bigger than I thought.

## Why MoMo PSB NG (com.mtngroupfintech.consumerapp) took off

> Channel: Google Play | Developer: MTN GROUP FINTECH (PTY) LTD | Store listing date 2026-08-24 | Research date 2026-11-06

### Bottom line

This isn't a "new product that took off." **Two external forces pushed existing users and new users into the same app.**

1. **2026-08 MTN Nigeria's MoMo Payment Service Bank (MoMo PSB) moved the whole platform to an Alipay+ backbone, shut down the old app, and forced existing users to download the new "MoMo PSB NG" app** (also offering 500MB of data to push migration). This brought installs from about 200k to 1.44M between 9 and October.

2. **2026-10-30 The Nigerian federal government launched NERSI emergency relief cash payouts of ₦50,000/month, with MoMo PSB as one of 5 designated payout channels** . Recipients received SMS messages and had to open a MoMo wallet to collect the money. Between November 3 and 6, the app climbed to #1,11-06 on Nigeria's Google Play free overall chart, adding 94k installs in a single day and 554 ratings.

The differentiators (MTN number as account, USSD + app, new Alipay+ backbone) didn't cause the surge. What did was **platform migration + eligibility as a government payout channel + MTN's telco distribution** . That is resource- and timing-driven, tied to platform events, and small teams can't replicate it.

Install curve since launch, estimated by AppstoreSpy (Google Play library app_day_ext):

- 2026-09-03 already had 216k installs (store listing date 08-24), which suggests migration of existing users from day one;

- 09-10 about 180k a day, 10-04 about 140k, 10-08 about 94k. The spikes line up with migration deadlines and push-notification timing (inferred, not verified one by one);

- In mid-to-late October it fell back to 1–20k a day;

- Starting 11-03 it picked up again, reaching 11-06 with 94k in a single day.

The same developer's other app, `mtnft.momo.consumer` (MoMo, multi-country version, 16.2M installs). Combined, the developer has 17.9M installs: MTN Group Fintech uses the same codebase and publishes country-specific builds across markets.

### 2. Why it took off

#### 1. Platform migration: old app shut down, existing users forced to download (from 2026-08)

- MoMo PSB posted on 2026-08-28 announcing the "planned platform upgrade has been successfully completed," and in parallel posted guides telling users to search "MoMo PSB NG" on Google Play / Palmstore / Huawei AppGallery / App Store to download the new app, with copy reading "Only 4 days remaining before the old MoMo App is switched off. Upgrade today and receive 500MBs FREE" (Instagram @momopsb, [www.instagram.com/p/DcnPGpWM_og/](https://www.instagram.com/p/DcnPGpWM_og/); X @MoMo_PSB [x.com/MoMo_PSB/status/2093582387477131626](https://x.com/MoMo_PSB/status/2093582387477131626)).

- Official help page "How to upgrade to the New MoMo Platform" (https://www.momo.ng/helppersonal/how-to-upgrade-to-the-new-momo-platform/).

- Nairametrics, reporting MTN Nigeria's 2026 Q3 results: MoMo PSB moved to the new **Alipay+ platform** in 2026-08, with September MAU of 3.2M, Q3 transaction volume up +69.1% QoQ, first-three-quarter revenue up +102.2%, and wallet balances of ₦43.8B (https://www.instagram.com/p/DfO5FOeFo2x/, 2026-11-02).

- In Aug 27, former Flutterwave COO Bode Abifarin was appointed CEO, effective 9-01 (Nairametrics, [nairametrics.com/2026/08/27/momo-psb-appoints-former-flutter…](https://nairametrics.com/2026/08/27/momo-psb-appoints-former-flutterwave-coo-bode-abifarin-as-ceo/)).

- Migration pain points are visible in reviews: "just updated the app and can no longer access it," OTPs not arriving, face verification failing, "service unavailable" (Google Play library reviews, 11-05).

#### 2. Government cash transfers: NERSI ₦50,000 relief payments, MoMo is one of 5 designated channels (from 2026-10-30)

- The Federal Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Reduction announced 10-30 the launch of NERSI (National Emergency Relief and Stabilisation Intervention), paying ₦50,000 per month to poor and vulnerable households, disbursed via licensed digital financial service providers to bank accounts or mobile wallets, with consent sought by SMS first (Punch, [punchng.com/fg-begins-n50000-monthly-cash-support-for-poor-n…](https://punchng.com/fg-begins-n50000-monthly-cash-support-for-poor-nigerians/), 2026-10-30; BusinessDay and BBC Pidgin reported the same).

- The official page [fmhapr.gov.ng/nersi/](https://fmhapr.gov.ng/nersi/) lists only ALAT (Wema), MoMo, NairaGram, OPay and Moniepoint as disbursing partners; "the wallet is bound to your phone number and NIN, and after ₦50,000 is credited you can withdraw cash at POS agents or banks."

- The timing lines up: 10-30 announcement → 11-03 App overall chart 18 → 11 → 11-04 at #1 → 11-05/06 daily rating gains jumped from 91 to 179 and 554.

- Corroboration: NairaGram (com.nairagram.android, roughly 100k installs), another disbursing channel, 11-05 and 11-06 daily rating gains of 91 and 256 (previously single digits), also climbing to #6 on Nigeria's finance chart; OPay's daily rating gains of 3,611 were also well above its usual 400 or so (10-31). This points to a **platform-level event** , not something MoMo did on its own.

- Caveat: none of the review sample (398 reviews from the Google Play library) directly mentions NERSI / 50,000 / relief. The main payout path is USSD, and only some people install the app, so "NERSI drove the November surge" is a strong inference, not something the reviews confirm.

#### 3. MTN's telecom distribution

- MTN Nigeria is the largest carrier. MoMo sign-up uses an MTN number plus the USSD code *671#, and existing users already have wallet balances, so switching apps requires no new customer acquisition.

- Standing promotions: MTN airtime bonus of 50%, 2% cashback, the "Airtime/Data for Life" referral giving 100MB, free transfers below ₦10,000 (extended through year-end), and free transfers all day on national holidays (momo.ng promo pages; theindustryng.com 2025-09-30).

#### 4. Overseas chart climbs (not fully explained)

- From 11-02, finance charts in Canada, the Netherlands, the UK, the US, Germany, France, Saudi Arabia and the UAE rose in step, with Canada reaching #3. The most likely cause is **Nigerian diaspora** (holding MTN Nigeria numbers, opening accounts for family back home, checking NERSI eligibility, or using the international receiving feature, since MoMo PSB integrated Thunes cross-border payments) downloading at the same time. Finance charts in these countries have low thresholds, so a few thousand installs can move them a lot. Not verified; coordinated install inflation is also possible.

### III. Competitors

| Name | Channel | Launched | Scale (googleplay library 11-06) | How it differs from these |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| OPay | Android/iOS | 2018 | 85M installs, +7k on 460 day, #2 on NG overall chart | Independent fintech with a larger POS agent network; also a NERSI channel; not tied to a carrier |
| Moniepoint Personal | Android/iOS | 2023 | 27.4M, daily +7k, #270 in NG finance 3 | Started as a merchant POS business; NERSI channel |
| PalmPay | Android/iOS | 2018 | 51.2M, 7 day +280k | Preinstalled on Transsion phones |
| Smartcash PSB(Airtel) | Android | 2022 | 14.9M, 7 day +160k | Closest comparison: another carrier's payments bank, but **not** a NERSI channel |
| ALAT(Wema Bank) | Android/iOS | 2017 | 5.08M | Digital bank under a licensed bank; NERSI channel |
| NairaGram | Android | 2022 | 105k | Small NERSI channel, briefly lifted the same way |
| Kuda / Paga | Android/iOS | 2019/2018 | 14M / 2.23M | Pure digital bank / established wallet |
| MoMo multi-country version (same company) | Android | 2024 | 16.2M | Same stack subcontracted in other African countries |

### 4. Growth tactics

| Channel | Evidence | Confirmed? |
|---|---|---|
| Forced migration of existing users (old app shut down) | MoMo PSB announcement + "old app shuts down in 4 days" posts | Confirmed |
| Migration incentive: 500MB of data | Same Instagram posts as above | Confirmed |
| Designated government relief disbursement channel (NERSI) | fmhapr.gov.ng/nersi, Punch, Leadership, MoMo official posts; timing matches the chart moves | Confirmed (channel eligibility); contribution to installs is inferred |
| MTN carrier SMS / USSD referrals | Sign-up and claims both go through *671#; NERSI SMS sent by channel partners | Partly confirmed |
| Free transfers, airtime cashback, data for referrals | momo.ng promo pages | Confirmed (contribution to this chart surge unclear) |
| Official social accounts (FB/IG/X tutorials) | MoMo PSB accounts | Confirmed |
| Paid acquisition / influencers | Not found | Unconfirmed |

### V. Visibility

Heavy coverage in major Nigerian outlets (Punch, Leadership, BusinessDay, BBC Pidgin, Nairametrics); MTN is a listed company and publicly discloses MoMo PSB revenue and MAU. It is a widely discussed big-company product, but of almost no reference value to people building apps for global markets. Our x-radar local corpus returned no related tweets.

### VI. Differentiation and whether it was the cause of the surge

- Differentiation: the MTN number is the account (usable via USSD without data), airtime / data are linked to the wallet, the new Alipay+ stack, and MTN's offline agent network.

- But the direct cause of the surge was **the platform migration plus eligibility for government relief disbursement** . Its differentiator (carrier identity) is the **prerequisite** that let it get the government channel slot and force users to migrate, not a reason users chose it on their own. Review quality is mixed (5-star reviews are common, and 1-star ones cluster around OTPs, login and face verification), which suggests product experience was not what drove growth.

### 7. What's worth borrowing

- "Forced migration when swapping a package or stack, plus small perks" can move existing users to a new package within weeks, and the new package instantly gets ranking and an install base. Any company with existing users can do this.

- Events like government cash disbursements, subsidies or tax refunds can briefly push the "designated wallet / channel" to the overall chart. When researching emerging-market fintech apps, treat government transfer lists as a signal source for charts.

- For indie developers: not replicable.

### 8. Not sure

- The old MoMo PSB app's package name and install count were not found in the library, so the number of migrated existing users cannot be precisely separated.

- NERSI's contribution to installs is inferred from timing and simultaneous moves in similar channels; how many people MoMo disbursed to has not been disclosed.

- The cause of the overseas finance chart rises (Canada / Netherlands / UK) is unverified (diaspora vs. install inflation).
