A borrowed name, 125k installs: ThemeArt and a reskinned-app pipeline

What it is An Android theming app: themes, widgets, icon swaps, and an iOS-style control center, turning your phone into a cute iPhone with one tap. It earns from ads.

Why it took off It copies the name of a top-ranked iOS hit, reuses a template the same team used last month, has almost all five-star early ratings, and then buys installs country by country in cheap markets like Vietnam, India and the Middle East to climb the category charts.

CHow you could follow it Don't copy this one app. Copy the selection method: watch apps that have just started climbing iOS personalization charts and have no same-name version on Play yet, build an Android version fast, buy installs in low-cost markets to climb the chart, and localize creatives with fewer ads.

Grade C: the category is taken by giant incumbents with hundreds of millions of installs, and the app itself is small with no real product edge. Its growth came from borrowed names, incentivized ratings and rotating developer accounts. That's learnable, but the window is short and there's account-ban risk, so copying it isn't worth the effort. Few people know about it yet

ThemeArt, a theming app that launched at the end of October, went from 8 installs to 125k in 179 days. The product itself has nothing new. The name borrows a top-ranked iOS hit, the template was used by the same team last month, the ratings look suspiciously good, and the installs were bought in Vietnam, India and the Middle East. What it can actually teach isn't in the product. It's the playbook: find an existing hit on iOS, move it to Play, and run the cycle again on a new developer account.

A five-star review that's just a name

Oct 28: a five-star review on Google Play for ThemeArt came in with nothing but a name, "Hasan Islam", followed by a long string of red hearts. Most reviews that week looked the same: "রনি" (a Bengali name), "နန်းပွင့်သိဂ်ီ" (a Burmese name), "NimaDangi", or just a row of emojis. Nov 5, a one-star review had the body "Tap on a clip to paste it in the text box.", which is an Android keyboard clipboard prompt pasted in as-is.

Only 76 reviews have visible text, but the app has 2,659 ratings (Play listing, 11-06). That means most people just tapped a star on the in-app rating prompt, and the few who wrote something didn't know what to say. This matters later: half of why the app took off is these stars.

What it is

ThemeArt: Themes Widgets Icons, from developer "Hermesy", launched on Google Play on 2026-10-07 and filed under Personalization. One app bundles four things: whole-phone themes, home-screen widgets, icon swapping, and an iOS-style "Control Center" pull-down panel (built on Android's accessibility service, with a dedicated note on the store page). The listing sells "cute, pastel, minimal, aesthetic": soft pink, lavender, Halloween, winter, one tap to make an Android phone look like a cute iPhone.

Money comes two ways: ads (its website's app-ads.txt lists AdMob, Vungle and Meta), plus in-app purchases at $0.99–$20.99. The most common complaint in reviews is also about ads: "too many adds", "this app scams u 50 plus ads and more".

How fast it grew, and where

Growth came in steps: +8K, +69K, +25K, +23K. Charting countries were added in waves too: first Vietnam, India and Thailand (10-29), then Saudi Arabia and Turkey (10-30), then the UAE, South Africa, Indonesia, Malaysia, Brazil, Nigeria and Argentina all at once (10-31). The Philippines, Mexico and the UK came in 11-01, and the US, Poland and Italy in 11-04. 11-06 It shows up on the Personalization Top Free chart in 19 countries. Its best rank is #11 to #13 in Vietnam, and it climbed from #183 to #26 in India. In the US it only reached #190, never the overall or Top Grossing charts.

Going into cheap markets first, then adding a few countries a day, gives a stair-step install curve. That's the classic paid-acquisition rhythm. (Inference: which ad networks it buys on, and how much, isn't visible from outside. I found no TikTok videos or press coverage of it online.) In places like Vietnam and India, a few tens of thousands of installs can push an app into the top 30 of the Personalization Top Free chart, and once charted the chart itself brings in some organic installs.

Those stars

11-01's numbers: 8,557 installs, 874 rating, roughly 10% of installers left a rating, and 874 of those ratings are five stars. For comparison, Hypernova's similar app ThemeFlow has 618K installs, 681 ratings and an average of 3.5. ThemeArt's rating rate is about 20 times higher, and its two- and three-star counts have stayed at zero.

The likely approach is that the app first asks "Do you like it?", and only people who tap yes get sent to rate it on Play (inferred; it could also be more direct). That long run of reviews that just list a name look like users being pushed by a popup into rating it. 11-05 Starting from one-star reviews, it reached 233 by 11-06, and real complaints began to come in. An Iranian user wrote in Persian on 11-02: "Totally useless, don't waste your data. I knew it would be like this, but I tried it anyway."

An app with a near-perfect score on its store page converts better than one at 3.5 stars. In a category where every app does the same things, those few stars may be the only thing setting it apart.

The name is borrowed, the template is used

The name "ThemeArt" belonged to Hypernova Limited on iOS. Their "ThemeArt: Widgets & App icons" launched 2026-05-28, hit #1 on the US App Store Personalization chart, and has 5,278 ratings. Hypernova's Android version doesn't use that name (it's ThemeFlow), so the ThemeArt name sat unclaimed on Play and got taken.

Hermesy's whole Play lineup maps almost one-to-one onto Hypernova's: Silly Smile live wallpapers, battery emoji, DIY wallpapers, plus themes, all things Hypernova had already validated on iOS. But the ad accounts don't match (none of Hermesy's IDs appear among the 89 AdMob publisher IDs Hypernova has made public), so Hermesy looks more like an independent copycat than a Hypernova alt account (inference; not fully ruled out).

Digging further, Hermesy has a sister developer account, "Nova AI Global". The two accounts' app-ads.txt files are identical, they use the same AdMob account, and their websites were committed by the same GitHub user. Nova AI Global published ThemeMix: Themes Widgets Icons on 9-08. From the name, package and features, it's clearly the previous version of ThemeArt. It reached about 190K installs, dropped off every chart in early November (Play listing shows 11-06: 194,515), and its early ratings were nearly all five stars too. When the first one stopped moving, they switched accounts, names and icon sets, and launched again.

The website catalog for this operation is numbered: 012-beauty-cam, 019-mp3-cutter, 032-theme-widget, 039-emoji-battery... ThemeArt's number is 057. The two accounts have 11 apps between them: a dog-language translator, a prank video call with Santa, expense tracking, WiFi, PDF and weather tools. Only two theme apps passed 100K; the rest stayed under 10K (Play developer pages, 11-06).

Who it's competing with

Nearly everyone. The category is already mature on Play:

iControl also does "control center + themes", and its weekly gain is more than six times ThemeArt's total installs. ThemeArt doesn't register here. The table also shows two things: demand is steady, since Android users in emerging markets keep wanting their phones to look like iPhones, and cute styling helps, with top apps adding hundreds of thousands a week; and Themie, launched a year ago, reached twenty million in a year, so latecomers can still win, just not on product novelty.

Where the money comes from

Mostly ads. Theme-app users keep coming back to switch styles and watch rewarded videos to unlock assets, and in places like Vietnam and India installs are cheap enough that ad revenue may cover the cost. It never reached a Top Grossing chart in any country, so how much the in-app purchases brought in is unknown, and whether the whole thing makes money is unverified. What we can say is that the same team went from ThemeMix to ThemeArt, which at least suggests the first one didn't lose enough to make them quit (inference).

If it were you

C. Worth learning a playbook from, but not worth copying this app. It has nothing to defend: features match the top apps with hundreds of millions of installs, the volume is small, and growth came from a borrowed name, prompted reviews and rotating accounts, each of which can get an app delisted or its developer banned.

Good fit for: small teams already building Android utility and personalization apps, with AdMob monetization and low-cost-market acquisition experience, who can ship one package a month. For you, the thing to take is the product-selection method, not this app.

Not a fit for: anyone trying to build a product that keeps users and sells subscriptions long-term; anyone who hasn't bought installs and is counting on organic store traffic; anyone worried about account bans (prompted reviews, name borrowing and running several accounts are all things Play policy explicitly polices).

How to do it: every week, check the rising charts for Personalization, Photo & Video and Entertainment on the US App Store, and look for apps that just broke in but have no same-name version on Play, or whose Android version uses a different name. The functionality only needs to work; match the store copy and icon style to the original. To go further than ThemeArt, fix what it did badly: fewer ads, rewarded videos for asset swaps instead of interstitial bombardment (most one-star reviews complain about ads), or make content local: holiday packs, regional star-themed palettes, local-language widgets, things the cookie-cutter top apps don't do.

How to get users: Google App Campaigns or Meta, starting in Vietnam, India and Southeast Asia, until the app is in the top 30 of the Personalization chart, then add countries in batches. Put keywords into the title and package name (themes / widgets / icons / control). Prompting for reviews is fine, but don't block everyone who might leave a low score. ThemeArt's one-star reviews started clustering after 11-05, and that is the price.

When to move: this kind of name-borrowing window only exists while the original's Android name is unclaimed, and it usually lasts a few weeks to two or three months. Once the original releases its own Android version, or Play has three or four apps with the same name, it's too late.

Signs that you misread it: (1) ThemeArt stops growing before mid-November and drops out of the top 50 in Vietnam and India, like ThemeMix did, living for only a month. That would mean one package buys only one round of acquisition, and the per-package economics may not work. (2) Hermesy or Nova AI Global gets apps delisted or accounts banned by Play, which would mean the risk has materialized. (3) Conversely, if it also reaches the top 50 of Personalization in high-price markets like the US or UK and charts on Top Grossing, its monetization is stronger than it looks, and this tier should be ranked higher.

One line

A reskinning tool combining themes, widgets, icons and an iOS-style Control Center. The developer is a numbered-pipeline shop that operates several developer accounts. The product itself is nothing new, and the name is copied from "ThemeArt: Widgets & App icons", which Hypernova Limited already ran on iOS. Volume comes mainly from Personalization Top Free charts in low-cost markets like Vietnam, India and the Middle East. Ratings are almost all 5 stars, an unusually high proportion. Monetization relies on AdMob, Vungle and Meta ads, plus $0.99–$20.99 in in-app purchases.

2. Who's behind it: a template pipeline run through two developer accounts

  • Developer "Hermesy", email [email protected] (a Turkish surname). The website is on GitHub Pages: theme-mix-057.github.io. The org was created 2026-09-28, the page was uploaded by user infinitylabx 10-05, and an app-ads.txt was added 10-11 (GitHub API).
  • A sister account, "Nova AI Global" ([email protected]), pushes an earlier version of the same template: ThemeMix: Themes Widgets Icons (com.mn.thememix.themes.appicons.widgets.wallpapers.control). It launched 9-08, and by 10-29 had 180,251 installs and 2,068 ratings, all 5-star. It then plateaued around 187k and dropped off all charts 11-02 (googleplay library). Its website mvapplabs.github.io/032-theme-widget/ was also submitted by infinitylabx.
  • The two accounts' app-ads.txt files are identical: the same AdMob publisher pub-7117777112918698, plus the same Vungle and the same Facebook account. It's safe to say it's one operator.
  • mvapplabs.github.io has a numbered directory: 012-beauty-cam, 015-diy-wallpaper, 019-mp3-cutter, 023-silly-smile, 031-ar-learn-draw, 032-theme-widget, 039-emoji-battery, sticker-maker. ThemeArt is 057. That's at least 57 numbered app pipelines.
  • The two accounts have 11 apps each on Play (developer pages): themes, Silly Smile live wallpaper, battery Emoji, stickers, DIY wallpaper, MP3 cutter, learn-to-draw, dog translator, Santa video-call prank, expense tracker, WiFi, PDF, weather, and more. Only the two theme apps passed 100k; the rest sit between 0 and 10k (Play install buckets, 11-06).
  • After the ThemeMix template hit 180k, they switched accounts and name (ThemeArt), changed the icon, and relaunched to run the cycle again. This is the "one template, many accounts" playbook.

3. Where the name and product picks came from: copying Hypernova Limited's iOS hits

  • On iOS, "ThemeArt: Widgets & App icons" (id6769700956) belongs to Hypernova Limited. It launched 2026-05-28, has 5,278 ratings, and peaked at #1 in the US personalization category (appstore library). Hypernova's other iOS apps include Silly Fun Smile Live Wallpaper (12,064 ratings), Emoji Battery Charging (5,698), and Walliz – DIY Wallpaper Collage (3,064).
  • Hypernova's Android theme app is called ThemeFlow: Themes & Widgets (launched 6-22, 618k installs, +7k in 100 days, #3 on Thailand's personalized Top Free). Its Smiley Fun Live Wallpaper has 11.4M installs (googleplay library).
  • The Hermesy / Nova AI Global product line maps almost one-to-one onto Hypernova's: Silly Smile wallpaper, Emoji Battery, DIY Wallpaper, ThemeArt themes. Hypernova's ThemeArt has a different name on Android, so the ThemeArt name was open on Play, and they took it (name piggybacking).
  • Hypernova's app-ads.txt lists 89 AdMob publisher IDs, none of them pub-7117777112918698. So Hermesy looks more like an independent copycat than a Hypernova alt account (not fully ruled out).

5. Growth tactics

ChannelEvidenceConfirmed?
Performance ad campaigns (most likely Google App Campaigns / Meta), targeting low-cost marketsVietnam, India and Thailand first, then it spreads to a few more stores a day; installs go up in steps starting from 10-31 (+8k, +69k, +25k, +23k); none of our metaads / tiktokads / googleads libraries tracked it (not on the list)Unconfirmed (inferred)
Incentivized reviews / rating fraud8,557 installs correspond to 874 all-5-star ratings. The same operator's ThemeMix has 2,068 ratings, also all 5-star. The comparable ThemeFlow has a rating rate of only 0.1%.The anomaly is confirmed; the exact method is not.
Name borrowingThe name copies "ThemeArt" from Hypernova, which already ranks first on iOS. The package name and title are stuffed with theme / widget / icon / control / wallpaper keywords.Confirmed
Store search and category chartsOnce it climbed the charts, the personalized Top Free list drove organic traffic (ranking #11–14 in Vietnam).Partly confirmed
Rotating a multi-account portfolioTwo accounts, Hermesy and Nova AI Global, share the same AdMob account and the same GitHub committer. After ThemeMix's growth stalled, ThemeArt took over.Confirmed
TikTok / creators / media / XA TikHub search for "themeart" returns no relevant videos. Web searches only turn up auto-generated APK sites, Softonic, and AppBrain pages.None found

Where the money comes from: mainly ad monetization (AdMob + Vungle + Meta Audience Network, per app-ads.txt), plus in-app purchases. Single-install acquisition costs are low in emerging markets, and theme app users keep coming back to switch styles and watch rewarded video to unlock assets, so ad revenue can cover acquisition costs. Actual ROI is unverified.

6. Why it took off

  1. The product picks are copied and already validated: they follow Hypernova's iOS hits (themes, Silly Smile, battery Emoji), and they took the name too, skipping the trial-and-error.
  2. Template reuse + account rotation: ThemeMix (September, 180k) ran its course, then ThemeArt (October, 125k, still growing) relaunched under a new account and name. Each package only rides about one month of new-package boost.
  3. Good-looking ratings: early on almost everything was 5-star, which lifts store conversion and makes the category chart easier to climb.
  4. Buying in low-barrier markets: in Vietnam, India, and the Middle East's personalized Top Free lists, a few tens of thousands of installs can reach the top 30.
  5. Steady category demand: iOS-style icons, widgets, and Control Center are long-term demand among Android users in emerging markets, and leading apps still gain hundreds of thousands a week.

7. Differentiation

No product differentiation. The features match Themepack, iControl, and ThemeFlow. Using an accessibility service for a Control Center is common practice in this category. It succeeds because of the playbook, not the product: copying a validated name and product picks, reusing a template, rotating accounts, polished ratings, and buying installs in low-cost markets.

8. Visibility and copycats

  • Revenue isn't public. No media or X coverage, only APK sites and auto-generated data-site pages. Almost nobody knows about it.
  • It's a copycat itself (of Hypernova). The same operator's ThemeMix was its earlier version. This template category is full of near-identical products.

9. Takeaways

  • Look on the iOS personalization charts for hits that just surged and don't yet have an Android version, or whose Android version uses a different name. Then bring the name and product picks over to Play.
  • Reskin one template and rotate it across several developer accounts. Each package gets one burst of new-package boost plus low-cost-market acquisition.
  • Buy installs in low-cost markets first to push into the category chart, then expand country by country.
  • Risks: name piggybacking, incentivized reviews, and multi-account setups can all get an app delisted or the accounts banned by Google Play. Short lifespan.

10. Still unclear

  • Which ad platform it spent on and how much (none of our three ad libraries track it), and how much AdMob brings in.
  • Whether the 5-star ratings come from in-app prompts, rewards for ratings, or fraud, and whether the recent rise in 1-star ratings will lead to a ranking penalty.
  • Whether Hermesy and Hypernova are related (the AdMob accounts don't match, which leans toward no).
  • Whether the next numbered reskin is already live under another account (not visible on the two developer pages).
