Plaitoon: AI Character Chat(플레이툰) · NettY

15k installs, self-reported $1M annual revenue: Plaitoon, a women-focused AI chat app built by 3 people in Korea

What it is A web-novel-style AI character chat: long-form stories with romance, romantic fantasy and BL characters. Characters remember your shared history, you can look through a character's phone, and each message costs a coin.

Why it took off AI character chat is booming in Korea, and women readers already pay per chapter for stories. It fills the gaps of the big platforms (short output, strict moderation, weak memory), lets creators bring their characters and referral codes over from other platforms, and gets into the low-barrier book category, where it has charted on the Korean and Japanese bestseller lists.

BHow you could follow Don't follow in Korea, where more than a dozen players already exist. Take the web-novel long-form, memory, character-phone and pay-per-message model into a language where nobody specializes in women-focused content. Launch on the web first, and first recruit the creators who make character cards and fan fiction in that language.

Grade B: demand and payment are both validated, few people know about it, a small team can break even, and the path to follow is clear. But women-focused AI chat in Korea is already crowded, global giants are present, its differentiation is just more features, adult content carries delisting and payment risk, and the $1M ARR is self-reported. Plaitoon is an AI character chat built by a Seoul company of 3 people, focused only on women's content: romance, romantic fantasy and BL. It hasn't gone viral; Google Play shows only 15k cumulative installs, adding a hundred or two a day. But the team's hiring page says it broke even in 2026 February and reached $1M ARR in April. Its money comes not from acquisition but from getting a small group of heavy users to pay message by message.

A creator "moved" the characters

On Dec 2025 30, a Korean creator going by 「금가락지」 posted on Postype, the Korean writing platform, with the title 「플레이툰(여성향 전용)캐릭터 챗 이식」, meaning moving characters to Plaitoon (women-oriented only). She used to build characters on Crack, one of Korea's biggest AI chat platforms, and this time she brought over the full cast from two of her works.

Her reasoning is practical: 「The system and pricing are about the same as Crack, but they fixed Crack's weak points and absorbed the strengths of other apps.」 Then she listed a bunch: branching storylines (「time machine」), chat logs you can download, longer prompts, and a reading view where you can adjust font size and typeface like an e-book. She also tested output length: for the same character, Gemini 2.5 gave about 1,700 characters per message for 80 gems, and Gemini 3.0 gave about 2,100 characters for 100 gems. Crack's default settings gave 1,200 and 1,700 characters. One more thing excited her: 「Claude Sonnet 3.7, which was retired elsewhere, is still alive here.」

The post ended with her referral code: 「Enter my friend code and get 777 jelly.」

This one post is almost the whole Plaitoon playbook: give heavy users longer, more controllable stories, let creators move their characters and readers over with them, and use referral codes to pull people in.

What it is

An AI character chat that works like web fiction. The first line of its Korean App Store description reads 「In richly described, web-novel-style stories, keep going with your characters in a story that belongs only to you.」 Main features:

  • Long-form scenes: not short back-and-forth messages, but paragraphs with expressions, environment, and inner monologue. A Japanese user wrote: 「Dialogue and narration are about half and half, just right.」 (Japan App Store, 9-18)
  • Memory: important events and promises can be saved to memory, so the character still remembers when you come back days later. 「I played for free, came back to talk to it three days later, and it remembered. I was shocked.」 (Japan App Store, 10-09)
  • Branching: go back to any point and take a different path.
  • Choice of models: Claude, Gemini, plus a self-tuned model leaning adult. Pricier models write longer, cheaper ones write shorter.
  • The character's 「phone」: you can browse the character's Instagram-style posts and search history, and characters message you first or call in the morning to wake you up. Reviews praise this feature the most: 「You can snoop on the character's phone!!!!」 「Every time I scroll through that Instagram and search history, I can picture the character's private life. That's the Plaitoon flavor.」 (Japan App Store, 10-09, 10-11)

The web version launched in public beta in June 2025, the iOS app went live in September 2025, and the Android app came much later, with the earliest reviews in April 2026. It now has Korean, Japanese, and Traditional Chinese interfaces.

How big is it really?

Self-reported results2025-07-week retention 50%, 70 creators; 2026-02 breakeven; 2026-04 ARR $1MThe company's job posting on the Korean recruiting platform groupby.kr

Two things need to be read together. First, it is really small: Play only added 1,200 installs in a week, and iOS ratings barely moved on either store that week, so new users are few and revenue mainly comes from existing users spending steadily. Second, it sits on the bestseller chart because it picked the 「Books」 category. Most similar apps are listed under 「Entertainment」, where you'd need hundreds of thousands to millions of installs to crack the top 20. The Books top chart is led by web-novel platforms, so the bar is much lower; with 15k installs it can rank #16 (inference).

There's a strange detail too: of 1,894 ratings on Play, 1,558 are five-star and 222 are one-star, with no three- or four-star ratings at all, and only a dozen or so include text. The number of ratings is 12% of installs, while normal apps usually see 1–3%. It may be from an early campaign that rewarded ratings, or it may be an oddity in the store data. Not verified.

The $1M ARR figure only appears on the job posting; no media has reported it, and there is almost no discussion on X. At 15k installs, it would require a small group of users to spend around a hundred dollars a year each. That isn't outrageous for AI romance chat, but it is self-reported, so treat it as a ceiling.

Where the money comes from

Pay per message, plus a membership. Each message costs gems: Claude about 50 per message, Gemini 80–100 (tested by a Postype creator, 2025-12). Gems can be bought individually, with in-app purchases on Play from $0.79 to $89.99; there is also a monthly membership. Daily check-ins give 300 jelly (free currency), tasks grant trial membership, and a Halloween top-up returned 25%. Morning wake-up calls and similar features cost extra gems, 1,500 per use.

User comments show best how well this design works:

「Before I knew it, I was paying.」 (Korea App Store, 10-10)
「I chatted all day and the jelly melted away bit by bit. In the end I got a membership anyway.」 (Korea App Store, 10-13)
「How scary how fast the time and gems melt away.」 (Japan App Store, 10-01)

Some complain about the cost: 「It's more fun than other platforms so I keep using it, but I spend way too much money... please release a monthly unlimited chat card.」 (Korea App Store, 10-12) The price is real, but users who grumble about cost keep paying anyway, and that is the foundation of this business.

Why users are willing to spend this much: AI character chat in Korea has been booming for two years. Industry blogs estimate that the mass-market zeta had revenue of ₩2025B in 26.7; wrtn, which runs Crack, is valued at ₩10 hundred million; and the women-oriented Caveduck raised a Series A in April 2026. Heavy women-oriented users are longtime readers of web novels, otome games, and BL, and they're already used to paying per chapter for stories they love.

Where users come from

  • Creator migration + referral codes: the post at the top is not the only one of its kind. The company says it has 70 active creators; referral codes give both sides 777 coins, and users even paste their codes directly into App Store reviews (Korea App Store, 10-04, 10-10).
  • Vertical community word of mouth: the 「AI chat women-oriented」 board on Korea's dcinside, Naver blogs, and Postype all have long reviews and side-by-side comparisons. In Japan, an X player who tests AI chat apps wrote a note recommending it, saying they want to 「bring more Japanese users to Plaitoon, especially the dream-girl crowd」 (2026-01). A Japanese review says 「X's timeline pulled me in.」
  • Light Google ads: the Google Ads Transparency Center shows about 30 ad creatives from the developer NETTY, the earliest from 2025-09. In the last week they ran 21, targeting Korea, Japan, and Taiwan, mostly search and image ads, at small volume.
  • Official accounts: the Korean X account has posted 900 times or more, with one or two thousand views per post; a separate Japanese account exists, and Instagram features a character every day. TikTok has almost no presence.
  • Things they barely do: no large-scale paid acquisition and no paid influencer partnerships spotted.

Who it's competing with

Lots. Korea's version of this business probably has 30 players, and more than a dozen focus only on women-oriented content.

A Korean user wrote a review of 20 women-oriented platforms on dcinside, ranking Plaitoon #14 with the verdict 「well-tuned in-house model, strong adult content, lots of features, but the basics are average.」 It isn't the best and it isn't the biggest; it survives on feature density and update speed, going from 1.2.27 to 1.2.31 updates in one week on Google Play.

The team is part of its edge too: 3 people, all developers, and the recruiting page says six days a week, 12 hours a day, 「using Claude Code and Codex as agent teammates」, and the company slogan is 「print money with AI.」 A small team means it can break even even with modest revenue.

If it were you

A verdict: demand and payment have both been proven, and the model isn't hard to copy, but in Korea the space is already crowded. What's worth building is taking the 「web-novel-style long-form + memory + pay-per-message」 package into a language where no one has built a women-oriented product yet.

Who it's for: teams or solo founders with someone who is a heavy reader of web novels, otome games, or BL and understands what that crowd wants; one or two people who can tune prompts and models themselves and keep per-message cost under control.

Who it's not for: anyone who wants a mass-market companion chat (that turf belongs to Character.AI and Talkie); anyone who can't handle content moderation and payment risk (adult content is where this business earns the most, and also the main reason apps get pulled from stores and payment channels refuse them); anyone hoping to grow fast through paid acquisition.

How to do it:

  1. Pick a language and an audience: romance and BL readers in Spanish, Portuguese, Indonesian, or Thai, or romantasy readers in English. First check whether that market already has localized women-oriented AI chat, and whether there are rivals like Crack that are big but have short outputs and strict moderation that you can compete against.
  2. Launch on the web first. Web payments avoid store commissions and let you set your own content limits; launch the app later, and list it under 「Books」 when you do.
  3. Copy the heavy users' checklist: long outputs, editable memory, branching, model tiers with pricing, and the character's 「phone.」 The last one is the cheapest and the most popular in reviews.
  4. Charge per message with a membership on top, so model costs track usage directly. Don't offer unlimited chat.

How to acquire users: first find creators in that language who already make character cards or fan fiction on other platforms, ask them to move their characters over, and offer referral codes and revenue share; then post long-form reviews in the relevant communities (Wattpad comment sections, Discord, fan subreddits, local forums). Use ads only to defend search terms.

When to move: within about a year. The Korean players are already expanding into Japan and Taiwan, LoveyDovey is already big in Taiwan and Japan, and sub-brands from large companies targeting women are coming out too. Once they finish multilingual support, 「longer outputs」 alone won't be enough of a selling point.

Signs you got it wrong: ① three months after launch, your weekly retention is far below the 50% Plaitoon self-reports, meaning readers in this language don't have Korea's habit of paying per message; ② model costs per paying user eat more than half your revenue, meaning pricing isn't passing costs on; ③ Plaitoon's fundraising in the second half of the year falls through, or its updates visibly slow down, meaning even its own $1M isn't stable.

Plaitoon (플레이툰): AI character chat for women users (com.namimobilern)

Channels: Google Play (also iOS and web at plaitoon.com) | Developer: NettY (네티, Netty Co., Ltd., Gangnam, Seoul, 3 people) | Research date 2026-11-06

Bottom line

Plaitoon is a "women-oriented" (여성향) AI character chat platform built by 3-person small Korean team NettY, focused on romance, romantasy (로판) and BL. It did not get big by brute force: it has only 15k lifetime installs on Play. It makes money through three things: AI character chat is booming in Korea, and heavy women users have strong willingness to pay; the product is built for heavy users with long text, memory, multiple models, branching storylines and plenty of "secondary spend" mechanics; and 2025-06 of web-first launch, porting and referral codes inside creator circles to drive growth. It also chose the "Books & Reference" store category, where the bestseller bar is low, so in Korea and Japan it sits around #16 and #21 in Top Grossing, looking more prominent than its actual scale. The team's own job posting claims 2026-02 breakeven, 2026-04 ARR of $1M; media has not covered it.

1. Data (from our database)

  • Play (googleplay library, 2026-10-29 to 11-06): cumulative installs rose from 14,201 to 15,405,7; new installs over 1,204 days, about 170/day. Ratings gained only 1 in 1,894,9 days. The store shows the launch date as 2026-08-11, but the earliest review is from 2026-04-09, so the launch date was reset. In-app purchase prices $0.79–$89.99.
    • Charting that day: Korea BOOKS_AND_REFERENCE Top Grossing #15–16, Japan same chart #21–22; 13 other storefronts including Hong Kong, Thailand and India list it in the same category's Top Grossing at #85–112 with nearly identical ranks, which suggests a shared small-market aggregate chart rather than real placement; Canada's Top Free in the same category #93–163; US Top Grossing #152.
    • The rating distribution is odd: 1,558 5-star ratings, 222 1-star, 111 2-star, while the 3-star and 4-star counts are both 0; only 16–17 of 1,894 ratings include written reviews; rating count is 12% of installs, where a typical app runs 1–3%; installs kept climbing during the observation window, but ratings didn't move. Maybe there was an early push to "rate for a reward" or similar, or it could just be a quirk in the store data. Unverified.
  • iOS (appstore library, id 6751233437,2025-09-14, category Books): Korea 763 ratings, Books Top Grossing #14–20; Japan 267 ratings, Books Top Grossing #36–51; Taiwan 34 ratings. From 10-28 to 11-06 ratings barely moved in either market (Korea dropped from 764 to 763), which suggests few new downloads recently and that revenue comes from continued spending by existing users.
  • Other products from the same developer: CLIFF: AI Short Drama (com.netty.cliff, listed on 2026-09-23, Play installs rose from 716 to 3,100; iOS listed in Korea 2026-10-20); 단비챗 DanbiChat (iOS listed in Korea 2026-04-14; the job posting calls it "a global BL character chat app"). The company website also lists OpenToken (an LLM cost gateway for Korean AI teams) and Mons (an agent collaboration system).

3. Competitors (people doing the same thing)

The Korean AI character chat space is already crowded. An industry blog estimates 30 such companies in Korea, of which only 4–5 have visible real revenue (https://m.blog.naver.com/royvalue/224405101142). Over a dozen focus only on women-oriented apps.

Verdict: lots of competitors. Plaitoon isn't in the first tier. 4. Growth tactics (where users come from)

  1. Google Ads (confirmed): the googleads library matches advertiser NETTY CO, LTD (Korea). Searching by domain plaitoon.com returns 30 creatives. The earliest is from 2025-09-04, and 21 are currently running in the last 7 days. Target countries include Korea, Japan, and Taiwan, plus Spain, Hungary, Italy, Poland, and Portugal. Video makes up 19%, the rest is mostly text (search) and images. Batches were launched in 2026-04 and 2026-06. Spend is small, looks like search terms and brand defense plus a bit of display.
  2. Creator migration + referral codes (confirmed): a Korean creator posts on Postype about "migrating" (이식) their characters from platforms like 크랙 to Plaitoon, and includes a referral code: "enter the friend code, get 777 Jelly (free currency)" (https://www.postype.com/@geumgarakji/post/21230804,2025-12-30). The company says there are 70 active creators.
  3. Community word of mouth (confirmed): in Korea, the dcinside "AI 채팅" and "AI 채팅 여성향" boards (the latter opened 2026-02-09), Naver blogs, and Postype all have long reviews and comparison posts. In Japan, an AI chat player on X (@rildearbl) wrote a note promoting it, saying they want to "bring more Japanese users to Plaitoon, especially 夢女子" (2026-01-15). Reviews on the Japan App Store say it was "the refuge I found after leaving some other AI chat app."
  4. Official social accounts (confirmed, small reach): the Korean X account @plaitoon "젤무너" has 915 posts, one with about 1.8K views. The Japanese official account is @jellymunajp. Instagram @aichat.plaitoon posts one character a day. YouTube @PlaitoonChat posts Shorts. The TikTok official account @plaitoon has only one video with 288 plays, so organic TikTok traffic is nearly zero.
  5. Operations campaigns (confirmed): daily check-in gives 300 Jelly, valid for one year. A Halloween event returned 25% of currency. Completing tasks gives 7 days of membership. Daily "love letters" and morning calls are sent to boost open rates and spending.
  6. Category choice (inferred): most competitors sit in the Entertainment category. Plaitoon is listed under Books & Reference on both stores. In Korea, the top 30 Top Grossing apps in this category are web-novel platforms like Naver Series and GoodNovel. The bar is lower than Entertainment, so an app with 15K installs can chart at #16. This gives it exposure to web-novel readers, and our recall flagged it as high paying conversion.
  7. Not found: Meta's ad library doesn't have it (Meta only tracks products on its list, so not finding it doesn't mean it isn't advertising). The TikTok ad library shows no_ads (that library only covers Europe). No paid influencer partnerships or chart-pushing found.

5. Why it took off

  • Big market, heavy spending: Korea's AI character chat has been booming for 2025–2026 years. zeta's 2025 revenue was ₩26.7B, turning profitable; wrtn (크랙) is valued at ₩10 billion; Caveduck raised a Series A 2026-04. Female users are willing to pay per message and "splurge on top-ups"; a royvalue blog post says "it's not hard to hit ₩30B in annual revenue from female-oriented relationship AI chat alone." A 3-person team only needs a small slice to break even, and one reports reaching $1M ARR (self-reported).
  • Built for heavy users: long outputs (1,700–2,100 characters per reply), high prompt limits (5,000–10,000 characters), memory (editable memory and "memory letters"), branching (time machine), chat export, multiple model options (Claude Sonnet 3.7, Gemini, plus an in-house model tuned for NSFW), and paid extras like a "dream phone," character SNS (드림그램), couple rooms, group chats, and message modes (morning call 1,500 gems).
  • Pay per message + high-priced IAP: Claude costs about 50 gems per message, Gemini 80–100 gems, IAP tops out at $89.99. Revenue relies on a small number of heavy users. Play had only 15K installs yet charted #16 in Korea Books Top Grossing, showing high revenue per user.
  • Web first + creator migration: 2025-06 web beta, iOS launched 2025-09, Android much later (earliest review 2026-04). Early users were creators who migrated their characters from other platforms. Web payments skip store commissions, but the web revenue share is unverified.
  • Lean team: 3 people, heavy use of AI agents for coding and marketing, so it can profit even at modest revenue.

6. Differentiation

Its public pitch is "female-oriented + BL/romance fantasy + web-novel-style long scenes + relationship memory." But in Korea that's already a sub-category with a dozen-plus competitors: Caveduck, 로판AI, Melting, 팅글, 둠칫, Tookit are all in it. Plaitoon is not the first, nor the biggest. What makes it different is:

  1. high feature density and fast iteration (memory v2, character SNS, auto-saved drafts... updates almost every week; the Play version went from 1.2.27 to 1.2.31 in just a week);
  2. multi-model choice, with an in-house model leaning toward NSFW;
  3. early expansion to Japan and Taiwan (Japanese and Traditional Chinese UI, official Japan account, Japan Google search ads), with Japan chart rankings trailing Korea.

These differences explain why it can survive and profit, but not a "breakout," because it never broke out. Play +1,204 over 7 days, iOS rating unchanged. It's a small, steadily profitable product.

7. What others can borrow

  • Slice a proven high-paying category (AI character chat) into niche audiences (female-oriented, BL), and use a "power user feature list" to beat leading platforms on their weak spots (short output, strict moderation, weak memory).
  • Cold-start almost for free by migrating creators and giving currency via referral codes in vertical communities like Postype and dcinside.
  • Put the app in a low-bar chart category (Books), so even low volume can make the Korea and Japan Top Grossing charts.
  • Pay per message with multi-model tiers, passing model costs straight to users, so a small team can break even early.

8. Still unclear

  • The $1M ARR and break-even claims are self-reported in recruiting pages, with no third-party evidence. The revenue split across web, iOS, and Play is unknown.
  • Play's rating distribution is unusual (no 3- or 4-star ratings, 12% rating rate, no recent growth). Whether it ran incentivized reviews is unverified.
  • Whether Meta or TikTok (Asia) ads ran is unknown; our libraries don't cover it.
  • The progress of DanbiChat and CLIFF, and whether a 2026 H2 funding round happened.
