Android users want iPhone's Live Photos: a small camera app that arrived six months late, 188k installs in three months
What it is A camera app for Android phones without a Live Photo feature (Xiaomi, OPPO, Infinix and the like) that shoots iPhone-style moving photos.
Why it's taking off After TikTok added live photo support, low-end Android users in Southeast Asia and Latin America watched the tutorial and went straight to the store to search "live photo". This app's name is exactly that search term, and it has zero bad reviews, so it picks up search traffic 5.0.
CHow you could ride it Don't build another Live Photo camera. Copy the playbook: watch TikTok for "iPhone has it, Android doesn't" tutorial keywords, ship a utility app named with users' own words within a month, and run your own tutorial accounts alongside it.

A solo developer with just this one app listed a camera called "Live Photo Camera for Android" on Google Play at the end of July. It reached 188k installs in three months, and in the last 7 days grew 22%. The demand came from TikTok, and more than a dozen teams are already doing it. This piece covers where the demand comes from, why it can still grow despite arriving six months late, where the money is, and whether the category itself is still worth entering.
"app name is live photo camera"
In 2026 July 24, a UK account on TikTok posted a tutorial: "how to make a live photo on android! app name is live photo camera", with 90k+ views. Three days later, in July 27, developer Lesa Mobile listed an app on Google Play with a name nearly identical to that line: Live Photo Camera for Android.
Tutorials like this are everywhere on TikTok. Once TikTok supported Live Photos, "how to take Live Photos on Android" became a staple in Southeast Asia and Latin America: Indonesian account agungdarmawn_ posted "how to make live foto on an Android phone with no live feature" with 12.8M views; a Vietnamese video on "taking Live Photos with Samsung to post on TikTok" got 1.97M views; a new Brazilian "como ativar live photo no android" in Nov 3 is still climbing (TikTok search, 11-06). People who watch the tutorial go to the store and search "live photo," and install whatever they find.
This app is the one that was waiting right behind the search box.
What it is
An app that replaces the system camera. When you press the shutter, it records the frames and sound from 1.5 or 3 seconds before and after, so holding the photo in the gallery makes it move. That is the iPhone Live Photo, built for Android phones that don't have the feature. The store description and official site name Xiaomi, Redmi, OPPO, vivo, realme, Infinix and Tecno.
Its most careful choice is the storage format: the video is embedded directly in the photo file, saved as Google's Motion Photo, so it still moves when sent to others or viewed in Google Photos without this app. Many similar apps save a JPG plus a separate MP4, which looks fine inside the app but turns into a still image once shared. It also has filters that apply to the video, lets you pick any frame as the cover, and exports GIFs.
Its official site livephotoandroid.com has a buying guide whose first advice is "don't install anything": first check whether your camera has a Motion Photo button. Samsung and Pixel do, so use the built-in one. Copy like this is rare for utility apps.
Metric
| Value | Sources | |
|---|---|---|
| Launched | 2026-07-27 | Google Play |
| Total installs | 188,388 | Google Play,11-06 |
| New in the last 7 days | 41,682 (about +22%) | Google Play, 10-29 to 11-06 |
| Growth curve | Mid-August about 5,700 → mid-October about 100k → 11-06 about 188k | Third-party estimate |
| Charted | Best Free chart rank in Photography in Vietnam was #13 (10-29), 11-06 #22; Indonesia #30; Brazil #88 | Google Play charts |
| Overall / Top Grossing | Not charted | Same as above |
| Rating | 4,925 ratings, 100% five-star | Google Play,11-06 |
The three countries it charted in are exactly the markets with the most tutorials and the highest share of low-end Android phones.
The last point needs its own note. Nearly 5,000 ratings, and not one from one to four stars. The category leader BitDance has 2,580 one-star ratings, and another, Tami Futura, has 2,993. Any utility app with normal traction collects a tail of negative reviews. Zero negatives almost always means the ratings were managed: the gentlest version is "rating gating," which only routes users likely to rate well to the store; it could also be more direct (inferred, method unverified). In store search results, a 5.0 sitting among a row of 4.3–4.6 stars won't hurt click-through.
Where users come from
From most to least confident:
- Search driven by TikTok tutorials (confirmed). It has no TikTok account of its own, and I found no videos naming it; it rides the search demand for the whole category. The category leader grew 260k in 7 days over the same period, so everyone was rising together.
- The name is the search term (likely). "Live Photo Camera for Android" is the exact phrase a user would type into search, and the description lists phone models, so searches like "live photo redmi" can surface it too.
- Perfect ratings (inferred). They make it look like the best option in search results.
- Official site SEO (exists, effect unknown). livephotoandroid.com published roughly 8 tutorial and buying-guide articles all at once in Aug 23: where Samsung's Motion Photo is, the difference between Motion Photo and Live Photo, the best Android Live Photo apps. Related English searches can rank near the top.
- Paid acquisition (unverified). Installs show a few one-day jumps of 10,000-20,000, which could be ads or simply Play's public install counts updating in bands.
No one on X, Reddit, or in media has mentioned it.
Where the money comes from
Ad-supported: watching a rewarded video unlocks one hour of premium features. Paying removes ads, unlocks all filters and GIF export, and removes the share watermark, listed at $1.99 as a single item. It has never charted in the Top Grossing of any country, and its users are in low-ticket markets like Vietnam, Indonesia and Brazil, so revenue should be very low (estimate). This is an ad-impression business, and it won't earn much until it reaches scale.
Who it's competing with
| Product | Launched | Scale (11-06) | Compared with alternatives |
|---|---|---|---|
| Live Photo Camera: Motion Photo(BitDance) | 2026-03 | 4.11M installs, +7k over 260 days, charted in 21 countries | Launched 4 months earlier, 20 times bigger, with more filters and AI features; the same company has two more similar apps, and its official site calls itself "7 best Live Photo apps," ranking itself first. |
| Live Photo for Android(Tami Futura) | 2026-02 | 1.47M, 7 days +52k | Six months earlier, 8 times bigger |
| NX Live Photo(Chaldealabs) | 2026-06 | 152k | Same size, the most direct rival |
| A batch of small video-to-Live-Photo apps | 2026-07~09 | 10k~80k | No capture, conversion only |
| Photica, VIMAGE, etc. | Around 2024 | Photica 1.27M | Adds AI motion to still photos; not real capture |
| Riza Cam, Fomz Cam and other film-style cameras | — | Single tutorials from several hundred thousand up to nearly 2M views | Build their own tutorial channels on TikTok to acquire users |
| Motion Photo built into phones | Rolled out over 2026 years, moving down the lineup | Samsung, Pixel; Xiaomi and Tecno new models adding it | Free and native; once low-end phones have it, this market shrinks |
There's also a rival outside the stores: on Indonesian TikTok, people post cloud-drive links distributing system camera installers extracted from phones like Infinix, one video with 2.9M views.
The takeaway is blunt: the category filled up in the first half of the year, and this app is a follower arriving 4–6 months late, at under 5% of the leader's scale. It grew because the whole category is growing, and its name and ratings gave it a slice of search. The careful file format is a plus, but ordinary users just want "it moves when I post it to TikTok," and few care about the file format.
If it were you
Verdict: don't build another Android Live Photo camera. That spot is packed, and phone makers are pushing the feature down the line. What's worth copying is the playbook: when a "iPhone has it, Android doesn't" tutorial takes off on TikTok, be first to catch the search with a utility app whose name is the search term.
Who it's for: small teams or solo devs who can ship a utility app in two or three weeks, understand store keywords, and can live with ad revenue. Experience in Southeast Asian or Latin American markets is a plus.
Who it's not for: anyone counting on subscriptions (these markets convert poorly, and this app itself has never touched a grossing chart); anyone planning to go head-to-head with BitDance in live photos; anyone who cares whether their reviews are clean. The top players in this niche run app matrices, write advertorials, and manage their ratings.
How to do it: scroll TikTok in Indonesia, Vietnam, Brazil and the Philippines for "cara / cách / como + android" tutorials, and look for features iPhone has and Android lacks, or that only Samsung has. Check whether the tutorial comments are full of people asking "why doesn't my phone have this?" Ship before the category gets crowded, name the app with users' own words, and list every popular budget model in the description. Aim at "the output still works after sharing" (standard format, recognized by TikTok). That's where most competitors cut corners.
How to get users: store search is the main channel, so get your keywords right on launch day. Also register your own TikTok account and post tutorial videos. Riza Cam and Fomz Cam got single videos to nearly 2M views this way, and this app skipped that step. Spend a day or two writing a few tutorial pages on the website to catch some Google search traffic.
Deadline: the window for this kind of opportunity is roughly 3–6 months. The live photo tutorial wave started in early 2025, and entering now means you're already in the third or fourth wave. When the next similar feature buzzword appears, ship within a month.
Wrong call: ① It charted in a country's Top Grossing within the next month or two, which shows this kind of cheap utility can make money from subscriptions in low-price markets. Our earlier take that it could only run ads was off. ② Its installs caught up to the Tami Futura tier (millions), so late followers can still win on name recognition and ratings. The category isn't saturated. ③ On the flip side, after Xiaomi, OPPO and Tecno pushed Motion Photo down to budget phones through system updates, the category leader's daily new installs dropped noticeably over 7 days. The window is closing, and even copying the playbook now means picking a different feature.

Why Live Photo Camera for Android (com.nefes.livephoto, Lesa Mobile) got traction
In one sentence: a camera app that brings iPhone-style live photos to Android phones without native Motion Photo (Xiaomi/Redmi, OPPO, realme, Infinix, Tecno and others). It launched 2026-07-27 and rides the "live photo" demand TikTok stirred up through store search. In a crowded niche it's a second-tier player, and its rating data shows clear signs of manipulation.
1. Data (googleplay library, 2026-10-29 ~ 11-06)
- Cumulative global installs of 188,388 (11-06), up +41,682 in the last 7 days (about +22%). AppstoreSpy's estimated curve (app_day_ext): 08-19 about 5,700, then 09-10 about 25k, 10-02 about 51k, 10-19 about 102k, 11-06 188k. Daily gains climbed from a few hundred to 4 to 7 thousand, with several single-day jumps along the way (08-27 +4,254, 09-10 +4,754, 10-08 +12,406, 10-27 +10,083).
- Charting: only on the Photography category Top Free charts in Vietnam, Indonesia and Brazil (the Philippines before that). Best in Vietnam at #13 (10-29), #11-06 in 22; Indonesia 30; Brazil 88. No overall chart, no Top Grossing.
- Monetization: ads plus in-app purchase at "$1.99 per item". The store description promises Premium for ad removal, unlocking all filters and GIF export, and removing the share watermark, plus rewarded videos that unlock one hour of use.
- Anomalous ratings: 4,925 ratings, distributed [1 stars 0, 2 stars 0, 3 stars 0, 4 stars 0, 5 stars 4925]. That's 100% five-star and zero one-star (the histogram from app_snap 11-06). The store page shows 5.0. The rating-to-install ratio is about 2.6%, and ratings rise steadily by +80 to 140 a day, out of sync with install jumps (on 10-30, 11-01, 11-02 with install gains of 0, ratings still rose 96 to 144). Same-category competitors have normal one-star tails: BitDance [2580,1720,4424,5284,74603], Tami Futura [2993,187,1122,1309,16464]. Organic ratings almost never produce 0 one-stars, which strongly suggests rating gating (only sending happy users to the store) or outright review farming. The specific method is unverified.
- Developer: Lesa Mobile, with this app as its only listing. Email [email protected], website livephotoandroid.com. The package prefix nefes is Turkish for "breath", and the site tagline is "Your photos, still breathing", so the team may be connected to Turkey (unverified).
2. Competitors (googleplay library 11-06 + web)

| Live Photo for Android(Tami Futura) | Android | 2026-02-03 | 1.47M, +7k in 52 days, charting in 9 countries | Half a year earlier, 8 times larger |

| Motion Photo built into phones | Big-company features | Pixel and Samsung for years; Xiaomi 17T "Leica Live Moment", Tecno CAMON 50, HyperOS 3 and others added it over 2026 years | Covers mid-to-high-end phones | Free and native. This app's market is exactly the budget phones that don't have it yet. |
| Camera apps promoted on TikTok, such as Riza Cam and Fomz Cam | Android | — | Single TikTok tutorials with 100k to 1.9M views | Built TikTok tutorial traffic through creators and their own accounts |
| iPhone Live Photo | Big-company features | 2015 | — | Demand prototype |
Bottom line: the category was already crowded by the first half of 2026. This app is a late follower, 4 to 6 months behind, at under 5% of the leader's scale.
3. Where users come from
- Timing and platform event (confirmed): after TikTok added support for posting Live Photos, "how to take live photos on Android" became a hot tutorial topic in Southeast Asia and Latin America. A TikHub search for "live photo android" returns mostly tutorials from Indonesia, Vietnam, the Philippines and Brazil in its top 20 results, with single videos at 180k to 3.5M views (riza_cam, kvic.08_ "IF YOU ARE ON ANDROID DOWNLOAD LIVE PHOTO MAKER APP" 820k, llukkiee.dookie 2.48M and others). Viewers who finish a tutorial search "live photo" in the store, and the whole category rises together. The countries where it charts (Vietnam, Indonesia, Brazil, the Philippines) are exactly where these tutorials are most common and budget Android has the largest share.
- Store search / ASO (highly likely): the name "Live Photo Camera for Android" is nearly the user's search term verbatim. The description densely lists Xiaomi, Redmi, OPPO, realme, vivo, Infinix and Tecno. Its 100% five-star rating makes it look more trustworthy than competitors rated 4.3 to 4.6 in search results, and may also help its ranking.
- SEO website (confirmed to exist, effect unverified): livephotoandroid.com has about 8 tutorial and guide pages (How to take live photos on Android, Samsung motion photo, Motion Photo vs Live Photo, Best live photo apps for Android, and others, published 08-23). On Jina, it ranks first or near the top for "Live Photo Camera for Android" and "iphone live photo on android".
- Rating gating / review farming (strongly suspected, unverified): see the rating distribution above.
- Paid acquisition (unverified): the install curve has single-day jumps of tens of thousands. This could be periodic paid acquisition or the tutorial wave. The ad library didn't show it, but it isn't on the tracking list, so absence there doesn't mean no spend.
- TikTok own accounts / creators (none found): no account of its own turned up, and no video names it. The results that came up (livephotocam.app, riza_cam, fomz_cam) belong to other apps.
- X, media, Reddit: x-radar shows no relevant discussion in the last 60 days. No press coverage. No public revenue figures.
4. Why it took off
- The demand came from the platform: the TikTok live photo wave, plus budget Android phones lacking native Motion Photo, with users in Southeast Asia and Latin America searching "live photo" in bulk. The whole category is rising, and the leader BitDance gained +260k in 7 days.
- It arrived late but caught the search long tail: the title is the search term, and its 5.0 rating looks better than competitors'.
- The product has one real but niche selling point: it saves as Google's native Motion Photo (video embedded in the JPG), so it still animates after sharing and in Google Photos. Many competitors save a "JPG plus separate MP4" pair. It also has filters applied to video, cover-frame selection, GIF/loop export, offline processing with no uploads, and the pitch "not fake AI motion".
- The ratings were almost certainly gamed, and that's a major reason it looks "best" in search results.
5. Differentiation
"A true Motion Photo format, plus restrained, honest copy (the guide pages first tell you to use the built-in feature)". This is the most carefully crafted part, but ordinary users (who just want a moving photo for TikTok) don't care much about file format. The main drivers were the category wave, a search-term name, and a perfect rating. The scale confirms it: the differentiation didn't let it catch the first mover.
6. Visibility
Nobody knows about it yet: no public revenue, no press, no discussion on X. But the niche is already crowded with a dozen-plus players like BitDance, Tami Futura, Wang YuFen and EchoKite, so it's a copycat itself.
7. What to borrow
- Target TikTok's tutorial buzzwords for "feature X is on iPhone, not Android," and build a utility app whose name is the search term. Go after Southeast Asia and Latin America.
- Use the standard format (Motion Photo) to deliver the "still moves after sharing" experience, and capture Google search with a website of how-to and buying-guide pages.
- A hybrid model of ads + rewarded video unlocking 1 hours + a small subscription. Suits low-ARPU markets.
8. Uncertain
- Are the ratings gated or gamed? Are the install spikes paid acquisition?
- Revenue: $1.99 in-app purchases, no Top Grossing chart history, so revenue should be very low (unverified).
- Team background (Turkey?) and whether there are other sock-puppet apps.
