Someone else built the meme, and it rides it: "Neon Draw" got 150k installs from two hot search terms
What it is An Android drawing app: neon brushes, drawing together with others on a shared canvas, step-by-step tutorials. It makes money from ads and in-app purchases, and copies the playbook of ArtWorkout and Artmate.
Why it took off It has no traffic of its own. It rides search demand that others created: people who watched the neon mode videos and searched "neon draw" in the app store saw it at #3 in US search results. Add cheap installs in low-cost Southeast Asian markets and rating prompts, and it steadily pulls 10–20k installs a week.
CHow you could follow Stop building neon. Watch which feature names top apps' creators keep shouting, search those words in the store where nobody is seriously ranking, then claim them with "feature buzzword + category word" naming, and build ratings first in low-barrier countries.

On 2026 Jun 28, TikTok account @alishakiss122 posted a drawing video captioned "What even is neon mode? 😭 Help me find his video!", with 470k views. This is ArtWorkout's standard script: two people draw together in the app, one says "turn on NEON MODE," then the other leaves. Viewers who finish it search "neon mode" or "neon draw" in the app store, and what they find isn't necessarily ArtWorkout. A copycat from a small Vietnamese team landed in exactly that spot and got 153k installs in two and a half months since launch. This piece covers how it captures traffic, how much traffic there is, why copying it isn't worth much, and the one move worth taking.
What it is
"Neon Draw & Drawing Together" on Google Play, package com.neon.draw.together, launched 2026-08-21, Art & Design category. The store page lists three selling points: drawing in real time on the same canvas with friends or strangers, glowing neon brushes, and step-by-step tutorials for animals, cartoons and anime. Contains ads, in-app purchases at $4.99–24.99 per item.
The developer is called Mobile Smart Growth on Play. The backend lists an individual, LA NGOC DANH, with an address in Nam Dinh province, Vietnam, and the website is a free Firebase domain. The iOS version launched 6 Sep under a different entity, ZERO TO ONE CONSULTING COMPANY LIMITED. Both accounts also own MyTheme and Sutunes, so it's the same team. Their approach: whenever a category heats up, they ship a copycat. They have a dozen-plus apps, and the flagship MyTheme has over 10 million downloads (Play developer page).
The gameplay largely copies two major products:
- ArtWorkout: the "tutorials + drawing with real people" model originated here. Neon Mode is one of its features and a meme that its TikTok creators keep using. 23.7M installs on Play.
- Artmate: Drawing Together: a Vietnamese Braly product that turned "Drawing Together" into a category term through heavy paid acquisition. 19.5M installs on Play, +640k in the last 7 days, and ranked #1 on the category Top Free chart in the UK, Germany, the Netherlands and other countries.
Neon Draw put one term from each into its title and package name.
Scale
| Timeline | Weekly new installs (estimated from Google Play install counts) |
|---|---|
| First week of September | About 2,400 |
| Week 9-14 | About 26k |
| Week 9-28 | about 30k (peak) |
| October | 1.3–17k per week |
| 11-06 | 152,729 total, +19,905 in the last 7 days |
The curve is flat, with no acceleration after late September. It only ever charted on category Top Free, never on the overall or Top Grossing charts. In early November it charted in 9 countries' Art & Design rankings at its best: #38 in Indonesia, #54 in the Philippines, #57 in Vietnam, #75 in Turkey, and #134 in the US.
Its scale is roughly 0.7% of ArtWorkout's and Artmate's. Compared with contemporaneous copycats it's not fast either: lenoox's "Art Mate: How to Draw Together" launched in 25 September and already has 177k installs, +88k per week, more than 4 times Neon Draw's pace.
Where users come from
1. Store search, riding the neon mode meme (confirmed). For over a year, creator videos for ArtWorkout have kept the meme going: "What is NEON mode..", "She told me to turn on neon mode… but I forgot where it was 😭", one after another, with views from a few thousand to millions. More kept coming in Nov 3. Similar apps like Drawly are riding the same meme. In the US Play store, searching "neon draw" in Nov 6 put Neon Draw at #3; searching "neon mode drawing" put it at #2. "neon draw" originally belonged to a batch of small neon-canvas apps that only let you doodle, not draw with others. Neon Draw captured some of the people searching for ArtWorkout neon mode by offering "draw together". It doesn't rank in the top 12 for "draw together", a term Artmate and ArtWorkout hold.
2. Cheap-country volume (inferred). The countries where it charts are mainly Indonesia, the Philippines, Vietnam and Turkey, where category charts have low entry barriers. The steady 10–20k a week looks like Google App Ads bought at low CPI. But it doesn't show up in the Meta, TikTok (only Europe results found) or Google ad libraries, so this can't be confirmed.
3. Pushing ratings up (inferred). 3,215 ratings, averaging 4.7 stars, with the rating count at 2.1% of installs. Artmate has only 0.12%, a gap of about 17 times. Only a dozen or so written reviews exist. The most likely explanation is frequent rating prompts in the app. That score supports search ranking and also determines whether users install after reaching the store page.
It has no content of its own: searching "neon draw app" on TikTok returns mostly ArtWorkout and Drawly videos. On X it has zero mentions in the last 60 days, and no media coverage.
Do users buy in?
There are almost no usable signals. Among the few written reviews on the store page, someone says "it is so fun to have friends," while others say "works well on a tablet, hard to use on a phone" and "this game doesn't work" (September, Google Play reviews). Artmate's negative reviews in the same category focus on two complaints: too many ads, and ads featuring real people, only to find the drawing partner is a bot. Whether Neon Draw's "real-time multiplayer" pairs you with real people or bots hasn't been verified.
Money comes from two sources: ads and in-app purchases. It has never charted on any Top Grossing list, and no revenue figures are public. The team has ad and IAP experience from MyTheme, a tens-of-millions app, so the SDKs and monetization are ready to go. A copycat pulling 10–20k installs a week probably covers its costs (inferred).
Who's competing
| Competitors | Scale | How it differs |
|---|---|---|
| ArtWorkout | 23.7M installs on Play, +7k in the last 186 days; 258k ratings on iOS US store | The category and the neon mode meme are both its own, with lots of creator videos on TikTok |
| Artmate: Drawing Together(Braly) | Play 19.5M installs, +643k in the last ~7 days | Turned "Drawing Together" into a category term through paid acquisition |
| ArtLoop(LifeIsGame) | Play 7.98M installs | Same tutorials plus drawing together, but no neon |
| Art Mate: How to Draw Together(lenoox) | 177k installs, +88k per week, charting in 26 countries | A contemporary copycat growing 4 times faster than it, with added artwork voting |
| Drawly, Skizz, Art Mate by HYPERNOVA, and others | A few thousand iOS ratings | All riding the same keywords, some growing their own creators, some buying ads |
| Neon Brush, CEM Neon Draw and other neon doodle apps | Neon Brush: 1.52M installs | Only neon brushes, no multiplayer. "neon draw" originally belonged to them |
Two tens-of-millions leaders plus a crowd of copycats. Neon Draw appears to be the only one occupying the "Neon + drawing together" combination. But that gap disappears the moment ArtWorkout or Artmate adds "Neon" to its title.
If it were you
Verdict: C. Building another "neon + drawing together" app against it isn't worth it. The term is already taken, the two tens-of-millions leaders can close the gap at any time, and it only reaches 10–20k a week. The one thing worth taking is the method: the creator matrices of big products keep shouting a feature name every day, and that feature name becomes an unclaimed search term in the store.
Who it suits: small teams already running an app portfolio, with ad and IAP frameworks ready and the ability to ship an app in two to three weeks. For them it's just another keyword, and 10–20k installs a week is enough to cover costs.
Who it doesn't suit: indie developers who want to build a long-term, branded drawing product. Going head-to-head against ArtWorkout and Artmate means competing on content or paid acquisition, and you'll lose both. Real-time multiplayer also needs servers and matchmaking, and when few people are online nobody draws with you. Filling the gap with bots gets you criticized.
How to do it: Stop building neon. On TikTok, watch which feature names and lines top apps' creators keep repeating, then search those words on Play and the App Store. If the results are a pile of small, unrelated apps that don't have that feature, that's the gap. Use "feature buzzword + category word" for your title and package name, and the original product's content does the work of sending people to the store. The feature has to actually exist; at minimum, don't let users install and find it misleading.
How to acquire users: Store search is the main channel. Chart first in low-barrier countries like Indonesia, the Philippines, Vietnam and Turkey to build ratings and rank, then expand into the US. Do collect ratings, but don't just funnel positive reviews to the store, which violates Google policy.
When to move: A meme keyword's lifespan follows the original product's creator campaigns. Neon mode has been pushed for over a year, with new videos still coming in November, but if ArtWorkout changes its script one day, search volume for this term will drop with it. When you spot a new meme, be live within a month.
Signs you've misjudged it: ① Its weekly installs fall to a few thousand in December, which would mean this kind of search traffic is smaller and shorter-lived than estimated, and the method itself needs discounting. ② If it holds 10–20k a week after ArtWorkout or Artmate adds "Neon" to its title, its volume comes mainly from paid acquisition rather than keyword riding, and the lesson is paid acquisition, not naming. ③ If its US ranking keeps climbing and it passes a million installs within three months, then "neon + drawing together" is an underrated product direction and C was too low.

Why Neon Draw & Drawing Together (com.neon.draw.together) is getting traction
Channel: Google Play (ART_AND_DESIGN). Research date 2026-11-06. Sources: our googleplay / appstore / metaads / tiktokads / googleads databases ("the databases"), TikTok via TikHub search, web pages via Jina.
Bottom line
It has no traffic of its own. It's a "draw together + step-by-step tutorial" copycat built by a Vietnamese solo developer (Mobile Smart Growth; Play console lists LA NGOC DANH, based in Nam Dinh province; on iOS it's published under ZERO TO ONE CONSULTING COMPANY LIMITED). It rides two demand waves others already heated up: the "What is NEON MODE?!" meme that ArtWorkout's creator network pushed across TikTok, and the "Drawing Together" category Braly's Artmate scaled through paid acquisition. It stuffs both hot search terms into its title and package name. On Play US it ranks #3 for "neon draw" and #2 for "neon mode drawing." Store search plus low-cost Southeast Asian markets bring steady volume of 1–30k installs a week. Monetization is ads plus in-app purchases. It's about 1% of the category leader's scale with no acceleration, so it's a small play that works, not a breakout.
1. Data: how big it really is
- Installs: 2026-11-06 Play shows 152,729 (100K+ tier), +19,905 over the last 7 days (library app_profile). Per the historical backfill in app_day_ext, 2026-09 first week was about 2.4k, then 0.8–30k a week: 9/14 week 25.6k, 9/28 week 30.1k (the peak), October ran 13–17k a week, and the 11/2 week is 9.5k (the week isn't over yet). The curve is flat, no acceleration.
- Ratings: 3,215 total, averaging 4.72 stars; star distribution [1★22, 2★125, 3★148, 4★91, 5★2804] (database app_snap 2026-11-06). But only 12 written reviews. Rating count is 2.1% of installs, versus Artmate's 0.12% (24,034 / 19.5M), about 17× higher. This suggests it prompts for ratings very aggressively in-app (other prompts are possible too). About 30–50 new ratings a day.
- Charts: only free category charts, with 9 stores charting at once: best Indonesia #38, Philippines #54, Vietnam #57, Turkey #75, Malaysia #81, Australia #89, Canada #96, Argentina #99, South Africa #100, US #134 (database chart_rank 2026-10-29 to 11-06). The charts are dominated by low-CPI markets in Southeast Asia and Turkey.
- Monetization: Play lists "contains ads, in-app purchases" with IAPs at $4.99–24.99 per item (database app_snap). It has not appeared on any grossing chart.
- iOS version: Neon Draw & Draw Together (id6791423830), live since 2026-09-06, published by ZERO TO ONE CONSULTING COMPANY LIMITED. US store has 690 ratings, +7 over the last 153 days, best rank #157 on the US Graphics & Design free chart (database appstore). The same company also publishes MyTheme and Sutunes on iOS. Both are under Mobile Smart Growth on Play (per the soft112 and softonic developer pages), so the two accounts are the same team.
- Publisher: the database lists 3 Mobile Smart Growth apps with 1.2M installs combined (Hand Control 696k, Sutunes 358k). AppBrain says "13 apps, active since 2021, about 20M installs total," with MyTheme as the main driver at 10M+ (the Play developer page shows MyTheme at 10M+ downloads and 212k reviews). It's a small factory that ships a copycat whenever a hot category appears.
2. Competitors: who else does draw-together / neon drawing
| Product | Platform | Launched | Scale (source) | How it differs from Neon Draw |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| ArtWorkout: Learn How to Draw | iOS / Android | iOS 2021-04; Play launch date reset to 2024-12 | Play 23.7M installs, +7k over the last 186 days; iOS US store 258k ratings (database, iTunes) | The category creator: tutorials + drawing with real strangers + "Neon Mode." TikTok has heaps of "App: ArtWorkout" creator videos. Neon Draw copies its gameplay and memes. |
| Artmate: Drawing Together (Braly JSC, Vietnam) | iOS / Android | iOS 2025-04-11; Play shows 2026-09-15 (likely reset; database install history starts 2026-06) | Play 19.5M installs, +7k over the last 643 days; #1 on the category free chart in the UK, Germany, Poland, Netherlands, Sweden, and Mexico, and #2 in the US; iOS US store 18k ratings, roughly +200 a day (database) | Paid acquisition made the term "Drawing Together" big. Braly has 14 apps and 310M installs, using AR tracing apps to drive traffic. Reviews include complaints that the ads show real people but the app is all bots, and the ads are everywhere. |
| ArtLoop: Learn how to draw(LifeIsGame) | iOS / Android | Play 2024-09 | Play 7.98M installs; iOS 16.5k ratings (database, iTunes) | Same tutorial + draw-together format, but the iOS title is literally How to Draw Together |
| Art Mate: How to Draw Together (lenoox; developer site hosted on netlify) | Android | 2026-09-25 | 177k installs, +7k over the last 88 days, charted in 26 stores, #10 in Argentina (database) | A same-era, same-tier copycat to Neon Draw, but growing 4× faster and adding Art Battle voting. |
| Art Mate: Draw Together(HYPERNOVA LIMITED) | iOS | 2026-08 ago | Ran TikTok ads in Europe from 2026-08-03 to 08-06 (database tiktokads) | Another copycat riding the Artmate name, buying its own ads. |
| Drawly: Learn to Draw Together(Capti AI) | iOS | 2025-08 | iOS 6,320 ratings (iTunes) | Also uses the "What is neon mode" creator meme (TikTok @the.art.flow_, @madeline_artsy, and others) |
| Skizz - Drawing Together (VOLIO, Vietnam) | iOS | 2024-07 | 2,459 rating | An early copycat from a Vietnamese studio |
| Neon Brush / Glow Draw, Magic Doodle, CEM's Neon Draw - Glow Doodle Art, and others | Android / iOS | 2024–2026 | Neon Brush (Neli Creative) 1.52M installs; CEM Neon Draw iOS 6,449 ratings | Pure neon doodling, no multiplayer. The "neon draw" search term originally belonged to these apps. |
| Draw With Buddies, Whiteboard, Magma (formerly Aggie.io), Gartic, and others | Multi-platform / web | 2017–2021 | Draw With Buddies 1.41M installs | Guess-my-drawing and whiteboard-style collaboration. No tutorials, and no neon angle. |
Verdict: the category isn't empty, and the leaders are two ten-million-scale products (ArtWorkout and Artmate). Neon Draw has about 0.7% of their scale, and among copycats it isn't fast either (lenoox's app gained +88k in a week).
3. Growth tactics: where users come from
- Store search, riding the "neon mode" meme (confirmed). ArtWorkout has a set of creator videos on TikTok with a fixed script: "He told me to turn on NEON MODE… then left 😭" and "What even is neon mode?" (@alishakiss122 with 474k views, @itsvil.draws "Neon challenge with my partner" with 519k, @mybad1544 with 232k, @art_julaa with 139k; Drawly and Skribly also use the same meme, per TikHub search). People who see the videos search the store for "neon draw" or "neon mode," and what they find isn't necessarily ArtWorkout. Reading Play US search results via Jina: for "neon draw," Neon Draw & Drawing Together ranks #3; for "neon mode drawing," it ranks #2; for "draw together," it's not in the top 12 (that term is held by Artmate and ArtWorkout). The title "Neon Draw & Drawing Together" and the package name com.neon.draw.together split the two hot terms between them.
- Low-cost Southeast Asian volume (speculative, unverified). Charting mainly in Indonesia, the Philippines, Vietnam, and Turkey, where category charts have low thresholds. The steady 1–30k weekly volume also looks like Google App Campaigns (UAC) buying at low CPI. But the Meta, TikTok (Europe only), and Google ad libraries show no ads from it or Mobile Smart Growth. Google's ad library only covers listed products, so not finding ads doesn't mean it isn't advertising.
- Rating prompts (inferred). Its rating rate is 17× the category's, yet it has almost no written reviews. The 4.7-star average is what carries store conversion and search ranking.
- Own content / creators: none found. Searching TikTok for "neon draw together" and "neon draw app" returns only ArtWorkout and Drawly videos, with no account of its own. On X (x-radar, last 60 days) zero mentions. Outside the store pages and aggregator sites, no media coverage.
- Cross-platform: 2026-09-06 also has a same-name iOS version under a different company entity, with much smaller volume, about 20 ratings a day in the US iOS store.
4. Why it took off
- The demand was created by others; it just rides it. ArtWorkout's "neon mode" meme has been flooding TikTok for over a year, turning "neon + drawing with strangers" into a searchable need. Artmate then spent heavily on paid acquisition to make "Drawing Together" a category term. When Neon Draw launched (2026-08-21), both terms were already hot.
- Precise ASO. Title, package name, and short description ("Draw glowing neon art, drawing together") all target these two terms. Under "neon draw", a search term that originally belonged to small neon-doodle apps, it uses "draw together" to capture people looking for ArtWorkout's neon mode.
- Low cost of the factory model. The same team has the ad and in-app purchase setup of a tens-of-millions-install app like MyTheme, reusing SDKs and monetization. A copycat like this probably breaks even at 1–20k installs a week (inference).
- Why people stay / pay: no data proves it. There are only 12 written reviews, with complaints like "doesn't work" and "hard to use on phone." Reviews of Artmate, the same category, focus on too many ads and "multiplayer" that turns out to be bots. Whether Neon Draw has real people drawing together in real time is unverified.
5. Differentiation
- Compared with ArtWorkout and Artmate: it moves the "neon brush" from one mode to the main product selling point and the name, and everything else (tutorials + drawing together + subscriptions / IAP + ads) is copied.
- Compared with pure neon-doodle apps: it adds "draw together."
- This differentiation is the reason it gets volume, but it exists only at the ASO layer, not the product layer: it relies on a gap in search terms created by a meme someone else built. The moat is almost zero. ArtWorkout or Artmate could close the gap just by adding "Neon" to their titles.
6. Visibility and copycats
- Visibility: few people know about it yet. Revenue is not public, there is no media coverage, zero mentions on X, and no content of its own on TikTok.
- Copycats: it is itself a copycat. Other apps riding the Artmate wave in the same period include lenoox's Art Mate: How to Draw Together (Android, 2026-09-25.2M installs) and HYPERNOVA's Art Mate: Draw Together (iOS). I have not seen a second one specifically riding "Neon Draw + draw together."
7. Takeaways
- Find the meme term: look at which feature name a big product's TikTok creator matrix keeps pushing (here, "neon mode"), then search the store for that term. If the results are a pile of small apps unrelated to the original, that's a gap: name yours with "feature meme + category term," and the original's content is driving traffic for you.
- Run data in low-cost storefronts first: Indonesia, the Philippines, Vietnam, and Turkey have low thresholds for category charts. Cheap to chart, get rankings and ratings, then expand to the US store.
- Pop the rating prompt to push up the rating count; store conversion improves noticeably.
8. Still unclear
- Whether it buys traffic on Google UAC or AppLovin and at what CPI (our ad libraries don't cover this).
- Whether "real-time multiplayer" is real-person matching or bots drawing alongside you.
- Actual conversion rate for the $4.99–24.99 IAPs and ad revenue. The recall card's "benchmark ArtWorkout monthly revenue 50–1M USD" cites Sensor Tower estimates, which this report did not verify.
- The AppBrain claim of "13 apps / 20M installs" was blocked by a captcha; I only saw it in the search snippet and could not read the original page.
