# "Thank you for coming back": a delisted Ugandan TV-drama app relaunched under a new name and won back 48k users in three weeks

**What it is** A free Ugandan app for watching "VJ-dubbed" films: foreign movies and series with live Luganda commentary, plus sports and live TV. It earns only from ads.

**Why it took off** Its predecessor, Your VJ, had 430k users until it was pulled from the Play Store in late July, and users had been waiting over two months. When Neto Watch launched, longtime users reinstalled it thinking it was a new version, and it also charted in Uganda and the Gulf states' entertainment rankings.

**D** **How you could approach it** Don't copy this niche. What's worth learning is keeping users off the platform (WhatsApp, TikTok, an official download page), and serving both local and overseas labor markets with small-language content.

Grade D: the initial surge came from the 430k legacy users of a delisted app, which later entrants can't get. The licensing of the source material is grey, so it keeps getting removed, there are over thirty similar apps, and ad revenue is thin. Understanding its playbook is enough. Few people know about it yet

Neto Watch is a free app for Ugandans to watch "VJ-dubbed" films: foreign movies, Korean dramas and US series with Luganda commentary. It launched on Google Play in Oct 14 and had 6k installs by Nov 48. Nearly everyone in the reviews recognizes it, because it's almost certainly the old app Your VJ, pulled from Play in late July, returned under a new developer name and package name. Those 48k are most likely returning users, not new ones. What it teaches is one thing: users need to be kept in your own hands. Trying to copy it isn't worth it.

### A five-star review

In Nov 4, a Ugandan user named Levi left a five-star review on Neto Watch's Play page: "When Your VJ and Bukoleya Extra disappeared from the Play Store, you nearly killed me. Thank you for coming back, you gave me the best experience." The closing line in Luganda, "Mwe musiinga," means "you are the best."

The same week, someone wrote "your vj (neto) is the greatest movie app of all time," while others were unimpressed: "Not good, switch back to yourvj" (10-25), "your vj plus is much better than neto watch" (10-26), "I prefer the old version" (10-31). One user said "I've been using yourvj all along" (11-01), and another asked the developer to "bring back Silo season 3, I can't find it in this new app" (11-03).

Nobody asked "what is this app." Everyone treated it as the "new version" of a familiar app.

### What it is

Opening Neto Watch, the home screen shows playlists sorted by title and by VJ, and you can watch without signing up (the store page says "guest viewing available, register for full access"). The description also adds live sports and online TV. Everything is free, with no in-app purchases, and money comes only from ads.

"VJ" is a uniquely Ugandan way of watching films: a commentator (VJ Junior and VJ Emmy are well known locally) narrates foreign films in Luganda, dubbed over the original. It used to play in street video halls and has now moved to phones. Netflix and StarTimes have nothing like it, which is why apps like this keep finding users. The source material and rights are largely grey.

### Why people installed it as soon as it launched

**Its predecessor had 430k users.** Your VJ was listed in 2021 October, built with Kodular (a no-code app builder). According to AppBrain, before it was pulled from Play it had 430k installs, 6,299 ratings, and a 4.38-star average. In 2026 July, 31 Play removed it, and the same team's Bukoleya Extra went with it. For over two months after that, Android users could only download the APK from the official site yourvjapp.com, which even includes a guide telling people to tap "Install anyway" when Play Protect blocks it. The iOS version stayed up and has 5,096 ratings.

**New package name, old version number.** Neto Watch uses a new package name, and its first release on the store was version 3.0.1, not 1.0. The code was carried over from the old project.

**Abnormally many ratings.** By Nov 6 it had 1,221 ratings, about 2.5% of installs, while comparable apps usually sit below 1%. Returning users leave a rating along the way.

The developer name is Friware ink, not the same name as Your VJ's Avartar Developers, and yourvjapp.com doesn't mention Neto Watch. So "it's Your VJ" is an inference, not official, but the reviews back it up strongly. Some people also arrive from WhatsApp links (one review complains "WhatsApp link not working"), which suggests a popup or WhatsApp group in the old app is calling users back. Not verified.

### The volume curve: old users came back, and that's done

| Date | Total installs | Average daily new installs |
|---|---|---|
| 10-14 launch → 10-26 | 20,622 | About 1,700 |
| 10-31 | 34,867 | About 2,800 |
| 11-03 | 44,572 | About 3,200 |
| 11-06 | 48,022 | About 1,150 |

The numbers come from Google Play; the middle days are averaged third-party estimates. After Nov 4, daily adds fell to one or two thousand, so old users have mostly returned.

Part of the volume comes from the store itself. It ranked #6 on the Entertainment free chart in the Uganda Google Play store (Appfigures). Because many Ugandans work in the Gulf states (domestic work, security, driving), it also hit #20 on the UAE Entertainment free chart (10-29), then slid to #95 by 11-06. AppBrain recorded its best in Saudi Arabia's Entertainment New Free chart at #11. One review says it's "clear everywhere in the world." The Gulf share is an inference; I haven't verified where users are.

I found no paid acquisition. With only ads and users in Uganda, each user is worth too little to justify buying installs (inference). Searching "neto watch" on TikTok turns up watches, and I found no promo from the app itself.

### Where the money comes from, and what users complain about

Its only revenue is ads, and they're heavy. The most-upvoted negative review (Oct 24, 11 people found it helpful): "This app used to be so good I'd recommend it to my enemy's enemy... but the new Neto Watch is all ads, it inserts a 30-second ad in the middle of the movie." Other reviews are blunter: "more ads than movies" (11-02), "an ad every minute" (10-24).

Next come the features: tapping back closes the app outright (several reports), no offline downloads (a dozen or so reviews ask for it), missing titles, and slow K-drama updates.

Even so, it has 4.48 stars, 909 five-star ratings, and only 50 one-star ratings. Users have no better option, so they keep watching while complaining.

### Who it's competing with

This niche is crowded. Google Play has at least thirty Luganda-dubbed movie apps, and most are one team running several accounts on the same catalog, swapping to a new account and relisting whenever one is pulled.

| Product | Scale (Play installs, 11-06) | Compared with Neto Watch |
|---|---|---|
| MunoWatch(Munoclub) | Main app 779k + Lite 378k + TV 75k | Launched 2020, the category leader; VJ Junior himself endorses it on TikTok |
| My TV Uganda / Luganda Translated Movies(Blu Link Media) | 447k / 229k | One company, several apps; live TV and dubbed movies are split |
| Luganda Translated Movies(JTZ developers UG) | 63k | #4 on Uganda's Entertainment free chart, ahead of Neto Watch; package name was repurposed from an older app |
| LugaFlix | 38k | Launched Aug 16, starting from zero; its first 11 weeks trail Neto Watch's first 3 weeks |
| YoVJ(KLucky) | 25k | Trades on Your VJ's name but not its users; someone also grabbed "YoVJ - All Translated Movi" |
| ExtraDramas - Bukoleya | 11k | Launched Oct 10, filling the gap left when Bukoleya Extra was pulled |

The most useful comparison is LugaFlix and YoVJ. They launched around the same time as Neto Watch, with similar products, catalogs, and ad models, yet their numbers are well behind. The difference isn't the product. It's that Neto Watch has the user base Your VJ built.

### What to learn from it

**Takedowns are routine in this business. What survives them is the audience outside the platform.** Your VJ kept going for over two months after it was pulled, and regained 48k users within three weeks of relaunching under a new package name. That was possible because of what it had built beforehand: a website APK, an iOS version, a WhatsApp group, and, for about 2024 years, Ugandan comedy creators (@planbstill, 1.46M followers; @counseltrev0r, 725k followers) repeating "YOUR VJ FREE MOVIES APP" on TikTok. Any product that platforms can pull should copy this playbook.

**Minority-language content can serve both locals and overseas migrant workers.** The same app charted in Uganda and in the UAE and Saudi Arabia's entertainment rankings. Gulf entertainment categories have low entry bars, so a few thousand installs can reach the top 30 (inference), which is effectively free exposure.

### If it were you

**One-line verdict** : don't copy it. It works because of 430k legacy users from an app that was pulled, which a follower can't get. The catalog is gray-market, there are over thirty similar apps, and each user is worth only a few ad impressions.

**Who it fits** : people already producing local-language content (dubbing or commentary in a language from East Africa, West Africa, or South Asia) who have licensing relationships and a community. What to take from this case is the combination of content, owned channels, and the migrant-worker market, not the Ugandan niche itself.

**Who it doesn't fit** : anyone trying to enter the Luganda dubbed-movie niche from scratch. LugaFlix and YoVJ already showed the product alone won't get traction without an existing user base. It also doesn't fit people unwilling to operate in the rights gray zone, where takedowns, new accounts, and relaunches are the normal cycle.

**How to do it** : if you have licensed or self-produced minority-language content, build a free ad-supported app that fills the gaps most of these apps share: offline downloads (the most requested feature in Neto Watch's reviews), no crashes on back, and no ads mid-episode. From day one, build a WhatsApp channel, a TikTok account, and a website download page, so users live outside Play.

**How to acquire users** : get local comedy creators to plug the app name in their videos (Your VJ did this for 2024 years), then submit the same app to the Gulf store regions to pick up the migrant-worker organic traffic.

**When to move** : there's no clear window. Each time a major app is pulled in this niche, a new wave of accounts rushes in. The current wave (the gap left by Your VJ and Bukoleya Extra) has already been taken by Neto Watch and ExtraDramas.

**Signs this read is wrong** : ① Neto Watch's daily adds keep rising after November, holding at several thousand a day, which would mean it's acquiring new users, not just returning old ones, and the market is bigger than it looks; ② a new app unrelated to Your VJ grows from zero past 100k installs, showing newcomers can win; ③ after Neto Watch is pulled again, the Your VJ team quickly relaunches under another package name and ramps up again, which would make this playbook a repeatable business rather than a one-off rescue.

Data and sources: Google Play store pages, reviews, install counts, and the UAE and Saudi charts (2026-10-14 to 11-06; review text from the Uganda storefront); AppBrain (Your VJ takedown record and install history, Neto Watch's Saudi New Free rank); Appfigures Uganda Entertainment free chart; yourvjapp.com; Your VJ's iOS page; Softonic; TikTok videos from @yourvjapp and partner creators. That Neto Watch and Your VJ are the same team, the Gulf share of users, the WhatsApp referral, and no paid acquisition are all inferences.

Where users come from

- Inference **Returning users (Your VJ relisted after takedown)** : reviews: 'Your VJ and Bukoleya extra were missing on Play store. Thank you for coming back', 'your vj (neto)', 'new version / old version'; the first release under the new package name was 3.0.1; the ratings count is 2.5% of installs, which is high

- **Verified** **Store search / organic chart traffic** : Appfigures Uganda Entertainment free chart #6; best UAE Entertainment free rank #20; AppBrain recorded Saudi Top New Free Entertainment #11

- Inference **WhatsApp group / in-app referral** : reviews mention 'wattsup link is not working'

- Inference **TikTok creators (previously promoted Your VJ)** : in 2024, @planbstill (1.46M followers), @counseltrev0r (725k), and @seith_funnyman2 (480k) tagged @YOUR VJ FREE MOVIES APP in their videos; I found no Neto Watch promotion on its own TikTok

## Why Neto Watch (com.neto.watch) got this far

> In short: Neto Watch is a free streaming app in Uganda for "VJ" dubbed movies (foreign films and series with Luganda voice-over or commentary). It is almost certainly **Your VJ** , which Google Play pulled in 2026-07 (430k installs, 4.4 stars), relaunched on Play under a new developer account and a new package name. Most of its 48k installs are Your VJ's old users returning, not new acquisition. The only revenue is ads.

### 1. Basic data

| items | value | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Developer | Friware ink (friwareink@gmail.com, website vidolpay.com, privacy policy hosted on tikolla.cloud); Softonic lists the developer's name as Naggayi Shakirah | googleplay library `app` table; Softonic Spanish page |
| Store launch | 2026-10-14; first review 10-22; version **3.0.1** (the new package is 3.x, suggesting code carried over from an older project) | googleplay library |
| Total installs | 48,022 (2026-11-06); last 7 days +13,155 | googleplay library `app_profile` |
| Install curve | 10-26 20,622 → 10-31 34,867 → 11-03 44,572 → 11-06 48,022. Daily adds went from roughly 4.7K/day (10-29–31) down to 3.2K/day (11-01–03), then to 0.9–1.6K/day (11-04–06), a clear decline | googleplay library `app_day` / `app_day_ext` (AppstoreSpy estimates) |
| Rating | 4.48 stars, 1,221 ratings, 482 text reviews; five-star 909, one-star 50 | 2026-11-06 scraped live with google-play-scraper (ug storefront) |
| Charts | Of the 30 regions we track, it only charted in the **UAE** and **Saudi Arabia** Entertainment free charts: AE 10-29 at #20, then slipping daily to #95 by 11-06; SA 10-29 at #124, then #171 on 10-30. AppBrain's best recorded rank was #11 on Saudi Top New Free Entertainment. On Appfigures' Uganda Entertainment free chart it ranked #6 | googleplay library `chart_rank`; appbrain.com; appfigures.com |
| Monetization | ad_supported=True, no in-app purchases. 300 of the recent reviews mention heavy ads, 50 of them complaining about ads mid-movie ("inserts a 30-second ad mid-film") | googleplay library; review scrape |

Note: our library doesn't cover Uganda. It charts in the UAE and Saudi Arabia, which suggests Ugandan migrant workers in the Gulf (domestic helpers, security guards, drivers, a very large group) are also using it. Reviews include people saying "you can watch it anywhere in the world." This explanation is inferred, not verified.

### 2. Key finding: it's Your VJ, renamed and relisted

**The Your VJ situation** (AppBrain):

- Android package `io.kodular.avartardevelopers.Your_VJ`, developer Avartar Developers, built on Kodular (a no-code platform). Listed on 2021-10.

- Before removal: **430k installs** in total, 6,299 ratings, 4.38 stars; **2026-07-31 removed from Play** .

- Bukoleya Extra (`bukoleya.vj`), from the same team, was also removed from Play. Both apps' iOS versions are still up, credited to developer Ssebuuma Moses; Your VJ iOS has 5,096 ratings.

- After the removal, the Android version moved to APK downloads from the website yourvjapp.com, which tells users to tap "Install anyway" when Play Protect blocks it.

**Neto Watch is the evidence that Your VJ came back** (Play reviews, 2026-10-27 ~ 11-05):

- "You killed me when **Your VJ and Bukoleya extra were missing on Play store. Thank you for coming back** " (11-05)

- "**your vj ( neto)** is the greatest movie app of all time" (11-05)

- "me I have been using yourvj…" / Luganda: "…did u take your vj…" (11-01)

- "Loving everything about this **new version** ";"I prefer the **old version** ";"**first version** was really nice";"put back Silo… I can't find it on this **new app** "

- "this new version of Neto watch is full of ads… [before] signal was great" (10-24,11 people marked it helpful)

- The developer's replies to reviews use a template line, "With every new app version…", and the version number started at 3.0.1 on the first day it was listed.

**Conclusion** : users treat Neto Watch as the new version of Your VJ. The package was relisted with version numbers starting from 3.0.1; in the first few days the ratings were almost all five stars, and rating count was 2.5% of installs (similar apps are usually under 1%). All of this points to the people installing it being **existing users** , likely pulled over by pop-ups in the old app, WhatsApp groups, or TikTok (one review mentions "WhatsApp link is not working"). However, the developer name changed (Friware ink and Avartar Developers are not the same name), and **there has been no public acknowledgment of the connection** . This is a strong inference.

### 3. Competitors (same niche: Luganda-dubbed VJ streaming)

Play figures are from google-play-scraper pulling Uganda store data, 2026-11-06.

| Product | Channel | Launched | Scale | Compared with Neto Watch |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Your VJ (predecessor) | Android (removed) / iOS / APK website | 2021-10 | 430k installs before Play removal; 5,096 iOS ratings | Same users, same content. Neto Watch is its new shell back on Play |
| MunoWatch(Munoclub) | Three Android packages | 2020-04 | Main 779k, Lite 378k, TV 75k | Category leader, endorsed by VJ Junior himself (there are videos on TikTok). Neto Watch has no celebrity backing |
| Luganda Translated Movies(Blu Link Media) | Android | 2022-11 | 229k; the same company also runs My TV Uganda at 447k | An established "live TV + dubbed films" catalog, with multiple apps from one company |
| 5 Stream / Joy TV(Git Icon) | Android | 2023/2025 | 150k / 81k | All small-account catalogs |
| BEST MOVIES UG / STREAM ZONE UG(Ajuna Isaac) | Android | 2024-06 / 2026-02 | 94k / 62k | All small-account catalogs |
| Luganda Translated Movies(JTZ developers UG) | Android | 2024-02 | 63k; ranked #4 in Appfigures' Uganda Entertainment free chart, ahead of Neto Watch | Package name "islamicmedialugandaquran", built by repurposing an old app |
| LugaFlix(Samuel Ocen) | Android | 2026-08-16 | 38k | Launched around the same time; Neto Watch's installs in its 3 weeks already exceeded its 11 weeks |
| watch stream - luganda movies(Naro tech) | Android | 2026-05 | 35k | Peers |
| Kika / YoVJ(KLucky) | Android | 2024-04 / 2026-08 | 31k / 25k | YoVJ trades on the Your VJ name; someone also squatted "YoVJ - All Translated Movi" (4J CONSULTING, 14k) |
| ExtraDramas - Bukoleya | Android | 2026-10-10 | 11k | Launched around the same time as Neto Watch, filling the gap left by Bukoleya Extra's removal |
| vjstream / Laba Series(nerd.ug) | Android + web at vjstream.online | 2026-03 / 09 | 18k / 551 | Web plus app |
| MyVJ, Jambo Films, VjLuga, etc. | APK sites / web | — | Unknown | Not on Play; distributes APKs or runs a website |
| Netflix, StarTimes ON, MovieBox | Big companies / international | — | 100M-scale | No Luganda VJ commentary; a different need |

**The landscape** : this niche is crowded, with thirty-plus similar apps, and most are one team running several listings. The content is largely the same (dubbed films from VJ Junior, VJ Emmy, Ice P and others, with copyright that is mostly gray). Play removals are frequent, so operators switch accounts and relist under new package names.

### 4. Growth tactics

1. **Migration of existing users (the main reason, strong inference)** : Your VJ had 430k installs and a base of users used to it, and it held on through APK and iOS for over two months after the late-July removal. When Neto Watch launched, users went back to installing from Play, adding about 9K a day before 10-26 (AppstoreSpy estimate, averaged). The reviews quoted above are the evidence.

2. **Store search** : a relatively new app climbed to #6 in Appfigures' Uganda Entertainment free chart and charted in the top 30 of the new-apps and entertainment charts in the UAE and Saudi Arabia, which brought organic traffic. Play supplied this on its own, not bought.

3. **TikTok creators (from earlier work)** : in 2024 Your VJ recruited major Ugandan comedy creators to mention @YOUR VJ FREE MOVIES APP in their videos, for example @planbstill (1.46M followers), @counseltrev0r (725k), @seith_funnyman2 (480k, videos with 36k views); the official account @yourvjapp has 4,635 followers. Whether Neto Watch has run any new TikTok promotion **could not be found** (a TikHub search for "neto watch" returns only watches).

4. **WhatsApp / in-app prompts** : reviews mention a "WhatsApp link", which suggests WhatsApp groups or channels are sharing the link. Not verified.

5. **Ad buying** : no evidence found. An ad-only monetization model with very low per-user value makes paid acquisition unlikely.

### 5. Why it took off

- **It is not a from-scratch product** : Your VJ's users and brand memory were held over during the two-month removal, and Neto Watch caught those people as soon as it launched (in the words of one review, "Thank you for coming back").

- **Real and strong demand** : foreign shows (Korean dramas, Filipino dramas, high school dramas) dubbed with Luganda commentary are a uniquely Ugandan mass entertainment that international platforms don't offer. During the removal, users could only sideload APKs, which was a hassle. Getting back on Play made installing much easier.

- **Ugandans abroad** : the UAE and Saudi charts suggest Ugandan laborers in the Gulf are watching too. Entertainment charts in these countries have low entry barriers, so a few thousand installs can reach the top 30 (inference).

- **Revenue from ads** : free, no sign-up ("guest"), heavy ad load (30 seconds inserted into the film). Users complain, but the rating is still 4.48, which suggests there are no better alternatives.

### 6. Differentiation

At the product level there is **essentially no differentiation** : the same VJ content, the same free-with-ads model, and the same problems with missing episodes and lag. What is actually different is **the existing user base and brand behind it from Your VJ** . That is the direct reason it took off faster than LugaFlix, RebaMovie and ExtraDramas, which launched around the same time, and it has little to do with the product itself. One minor difference: it describes "live sports / online TV" in its listing, so its scope is slightly broader than similar apps that only do dubbed films.

### 7. Visibility and copycats

- **Visibility: still little known.** No media coverage, no discussion on X (x-radar: 30 posts in the last 0 days), no public revenue figures, only auto-generated pages from AppBrain and Softonic.

- **Copycats** : No one has been caught straight-up cloning Neto Watch. But the whole niche copies itself and rides on each other's names (YoVJ piggybacks on Your VJ, and someone even squatted YoVJ). At least 6 similar apps have launched between 2026 and October 8: LugaFlix, RebaMovie, xVJ, ExtraDramas, Movie Tune UG, Film Forecast.

### 8. What others can learn

- **"Removed → relist under a new account → call the old users back" is the standard playbook in this gray niche** : operators keep users in their own channels (WhatsApp, TikTok accounts, website APKs) during normal times, and after a removal they can bring back tens of thousands of installs under a new package name within days.

- **Local-language content + migrant workers abroad** : the same app can chart both at home and in the Gulf countries where laborers live. The niche charts in the Gulf have low barriers, which picks up extra exposure.

- Risks: content copyright is gray, Play keeps removing apps, so this is a cycle-by-cycle business that does not build lasting assets.

### 9. Still unclear

- Are Friware ink and Avartar Developers / Ssebuuma Moses the same team, or is this a new shell borrowing Your VJ's reputation? Users think so, but the developer identity and website have no public disclosure. yourvjapp.com does not mention Neto Watch.

- Specific Uganda store rankings and installs share (our library doesn't cover Uganda).

- Whether any paid promotion was run, and how WhatsApp and TikTok traffic was actually directed.

- The recall rationale says the developer also has a Gula Now. Not verified.
