Shortoo: the company behind GoodShort launched another app with only AI micro-dramas, and it added 56k installs in a week

What it is A viewing app for AI-generated short dramas and animated comic series. Coins unlock episodes, with subscriptions and ad unlocks as well. It comes from New Reading Era, the company behind GoodShort and GoodNovel.

Why it's taking off The parent company brought over GoodShort's paywall design and its web-novel IP as-is, and it caught the wave of AI micro-drama going global in 2026. It first charted in low-barrier markets like the Philippines, South Africa and Brazil. How users were acquired isn't fully visible, but it's likely in-house paid acquisition plus cross-promotion.

CWhat you can take from it Don't build an AI short-drama app from scratch. Teams that already run a paid-content app can copy the approach: split the AI content into its own app, reuse the payment system, and go after charts in low-barrier countries first.

Grade C: its edge comes from parent-company resources that followers can't get (payment system, web-novel IP, hundreds of millions of legacy users). The AI short-drama category already has tens-of-millions-install players like VibeShort and StoryReel, plus many big companies. The playbook is worth learning, but copying the product isn't. Few people know about it yet

New Reading Era (GoodShort, GoodNovel) quietly launched a new app in late July called Shortoo, featuring only AI-generated short dramas and animated comic series. It started gaining traction in late October: installs more than doubled in 8 days, and it climbed to around #50 on the entertainment Top Grossing charts in the Philippines, South Africa and Brazil. It looks like a new opportunity, but really it's a big company experimenting with AI content. Below: what it is, where the users and the money come from, and what indie developers can take from it. What you can take is the playbook, not the category.

A user who had to rewatch after watching an ad

In October 31, a user in the US App Store gave Shortoo 3 stars, titled 'Unlock over and over':

I've used a lot of apps like this. I watched an ad to unlock a few episodes, and then I had to unlock the same episode again. The free episodes per day are limited to begin with, and even with luck you can only watch one new episode.

In November 4, another user on Google Play was more blunt: 'Should be 0 stars. After watching the ad, it reset the episodes back to the ones I'd already watched.'

In that same October 31, Shortoo's installs on Google Play jumped from 23,206 to 48,945. The people complaining and the people pouring in are the same crowd: this is a short-drama app that just started scaling, pacing you episode by episode with ads and coins. It's nearly identical to GoodShort and DramaBox, with one difference: there are no live actors.

What it is

The first line of the store page reads 'The Next Generation of AI Dramas & Motion Comics.' The content is AI-generated short dramas of 1 minutes per episode, plus 'motion comics', where manga panels move and get sound effects and voice-over. Genres listed include romance, cyberpunk, fantasy, suspense, urban legends and sci-fi, with 'new episodes daily'. The ten titles on the website homepage, such as 'Glacial Awakening: Frost's Heir', 'Crescent Moon Curse: Bloodbound' and 'Gilded Chains of the Crown', have heavy web-novel fantasy names. The titles users mention in US reviews, 'Too Late to Beg Ex Wife' (spelled 'To late' in reviews) and 'I was the prize of my brother', are ex-wife, revenge and wealthy-family plots, standard short-drama tropes.

The developer account is GoodNovel (Singapore entity SINGAPORE NEW READING TECHNOLOGY), and the official reply on Play is also signed GoodNovel. Timeline: the website went live in July 22, the Android listing went up in July 25, the iOS listing in August 2, and an update reached 1.0.5 in November 2.

In 8 days it grew by about 56k, roughly 70% of its total installs, adding about 6–8 thousand per day (Play installs update only every day or two, so this is averaged over two days). The iOS side is similar in scale: 531 ratings in the US, and +158 over the last 7 days.

Compared with its peers, this number is small. VibeShort, a first mover in pure AI short dramas, listed in February and had 19.5M installs by 11-06, adding 1.25M in a week. StoryReel listed in April and reached 19M. Shortoo is one two-hundred-and-fiftieth of VibeShort. Its sister GoodShort has 98.6M installs, and New Reading's 5 apps combined total 152M.

Few installs, yet it charts: why

11-06 On Google Play it charts in 14 countries: #48 in Philippines entertainment Top Grossing, #49 in South Africa, #52 in Brazil, #65 in the Netherlands, 77 in Poland, 78 in India, 80 in Australia, and #126 overall Top Grossing in the Philippines. In the US entertainment Top Free chart it only ranks 140. Its Top Grossing ranks are far better than its Top Free ranks, which means a fair share of the people coming in are paying.

The monetization is exactly the same as GoodShort: coins unlock episodes, with weekly and monthly subscriptions, ad unlocks, and tasks to earn rewards (the 'Earn Rewards' page), plus one-time in-app purchases of $0.99 to $199.99. The Philippines, South Africa and Brazil are exactly where GoodShort makes money (GoodShort is #8 overall Top Grossing in the Philippines). The same payment design was moved over, and the paying habits came with it.

But be clear about what these chart positions mean: the entertainment Top Grossing charts in these countries are already crowded with short-drama apps, and ranking #50 doesn't mean big revenue. My estimate is that it makes a few thousand dollars a day right now (an inference, no public figures).

Where the traffic comes from

Honestly, the outside view is incomplete. What can be confirmed and ruled out:

  • No content accounts are pushing it. Searching TikTok for Shortoo turns up no videos for this app; @shortoo is an unrelated personal account. By comparison, GoodShort has a large group of TikTok clipping accounts saying 'search S63750 on GoodShort to watch the full series', with 16k to 250k views per post. Shortoo hasn't built this yet. Nobody is talking about it on X or Reddit either.
  • Its ads aren't in public ad records, but that doesn't prove it isn't advertising. No ads turned up in the Google Ads Transparency Center or the TikTok European ad library, and the Meta ad library shows no advertiser linked to this app. But those only cover some channels and regions. With 56k installs a week, concentrated in cheap-install countries like the Philippines, South Africa, Brazil and Nigeria, it looks like the low-cost country test that short-drama companies typically run (inference).
  • Cross-promotion from its sister apps is likely, but unproven. The parent company has GoodShort and GoodNovel with hundreds of millions of users, and putting a banner for the new app inside its own apps is the cheapest source of installs (inference).
  • Store search and chart visibility are confirmed. The name and subtitle are packed with 'AI Dramas & Comics', 'Motion Comics' and 'Manga Reels'. On iOS it appears between #70 and #40 on the entertainment Top Grossing charts in 180 countries, and long-tail countries pick up some organic installs from the charts.

One more detail: 1,976 ratings and 79k installs, a rating rate of about 2.5%, which is high for an entertainment app. The Play page shows 5.0 stars. The official reply to a negative review says: 'You can complete tasks on the Earn Rewards page to earn rewards for unlocking episodes.' The ratings are most likely prompted from inside the app, and I have not verified whether coins are traded for good reviews. The positive reviews also tell a story: 'Loved', 'Ok', 'Active', '5 stars', one or two words each.

Why it launched as a separate app

GoodShort could simply add an AI drama channel inside its app, as many live-action short-drama platforms do. New Reading chose to launch a separate app instead, probably for three reasons:

  1. It protects the reputation of the old app. Live-action short-drama users resist AI content. On Reddit's short-drama communities, people complain that 'most of these apps have been taken over by AI dramas'. Splitting it out keeps the paying users of GoodShort from seeing it.
  2. AI content is cheap, so they can test freely. One AI comic series costs an order of magnitude less than a live-action drama, so they can publish new episodes daily and experiment in low-cost countries.
  3. The wave has arrived. According to DataEye, overseas short-drama apps made $1.27B in in-app purchase revenue in the first half of 2026, and AI series pushed revenue to a new high after launching in 5 June. TikTok paid out $82M to short-drama creators in the first half, and 40% of watch time went to AI content. Turning web-novel IP into AI comic series is the most natural next step, and New Reading has GoodNovel's web-novel library.

It isn't the only one with this idea. Changdu Technology, a web-novel company, launched MoboDrama in March as a separate pure-AI comic-drama app with ads and in-app purchases. By 11-06 it had 790k installs, 4 months ahead of Shortoo and 10 times its size. China Literature followed with ToonScroll in late May. Shortoo and MoboDrama are nearly the same playbook, with Shortoo arriving 4 months later.

In the second half of the year, a batch of smaller apps also appeared: Plotwheel, CLIFF, RushDrama, and 'AI Drama: Short Series'. This category has no gaps, and the front-runners are large companies and large platforms.

If it were you

Verdict: Don't build an AI short-drama app like this one. Shortoo charted in a dozen-plus countries in its first week, thanks to the parent company's existing payment system, web-novel IP, and possibly its own user base and paid-acquisition team. You don't have any of these, and the category leaders already have tens of millions of installs. What's worth taking is the playbook.

Who it fits: Small teams that already run a profitable app, have a base of paying users and a monetization system, whether your content is web novels, comics, audiobooks or something else.

Who it doesn't fit: Indie developers who want to build an AI short-drama or comic-drama platform from scratch. You'd have to solve content volume, payment design and paid acquisition all at once, against VibeShort, StoryReel and a crowd of Chinese web-novel companies. Without a paid-acquisition budget, you also can't run the TikTok 'search the code for the full series' clipping-account network.

How to do it: There are three things you can borrow.

  1. Split new content types into their own app. If your existing app wants to try AI-generated content, don't cram it into the main app and risk its reputation. Give it a new name, launch it separately, and reuse the payment system and content library, so the two don't drag each other down.
  2. Go for the low-barrier charts first. The top 50 of entertainment Top Grossing in the Philippines, South Africa, Brazil and Nigeria can be reached with tens of thousands of installs plus a higher-priced in-app purchase tier. Once you're there you get chart exposure, and you can also show up on the long-tail charts of 70 more countries.
  3. Build ratings into the task system. A new app that collects several thousand good reviews in its first month converts much better in the store. But follow store rules: don't trade coins for reviews.

How to get users: If you really build a content app, don't rely only on the store. A large part of GoodShort's volume comes from TikTok clipping accounts: a plot climax, ending with 'search the code in the app to watch the full series'. Shortoo hasn't built this yet, which suggests it currently relies mainly on the parent company's ads and cross-promotion (inference).

Window closes when: "AI short drama going global" has already been covered by Huxiu, 36kr and CCTV this year, and big companies are jumping in. If you want to ride this wave and spin off an AI sub-product from your content app, do it before the first half of 2027. After that, the Top Grossing charts in low-barrier countries will be packed with copycats, and the bar goes up.

What would mean you're reading it wrong: ① Shortoo reaches several million installs within a month or two and takes the #30 overall spot in the Philippines' Top Grossing chart. That would mean the AI micro-drama path is wider than it looks, and a standalone app can scale. ② The reverse: it stops updating or drops off the Top Grossing charts in each country in early 2027. That would mean even a big company with IP and a payment system hasn't made pure AI content work, so the path needs more caution. ③ An independent AI short-drama app with no big-company backing reaches a million installs. That would mean the category still leaves room for small teams.

Where users come from
  • Inferred Paid acquisition: googleads and tiktokads (Europe) map to no_ads, and metaads has no match. But these libraries only cover a watchlist or Europe, and about 56k installs a week come from low-CPI countries, which looks like test spending.
  • Inferred Cross-promotion from sister apps (GoodShort/GoodNovel user pools): same developer account, official Play replies signed GoodNovel, same Earn Rewards system. The parent's Play apps have 152M installs in total. No direct cross-promotion evidence found.
  • Confirmed Store charts and search: the name stacks keywords like AI Dramas & Comics / Motion Comics. Ranks 40–130 on Play's Entertainment Top Grossing across a dozen-plus countries, and 40–180 on iOS's Entertainment Top Grossing in several countries (70).

One line

Shortoo is a standalone pure-AI short drama + AI animated micro-drama app that New Reading (parent of GoodNovel and GoodShort, Singapore entity SINGAPORE NEW READING TECHNOLOGY PTE. LTD.) launched at the end of July 2026. It didn't grow organically. It's a short-drama going-global company that already earns large annual revenue, copying the AI micro-drama wave of 2026 with a new brand: it plugs cheap AI content into GoodShort's existing coin, subscription and watch-ads-to-unlock monetization. It began scaling at the end of October. Scale is still small (79k installs globally), two orders of magnitude behind the leaders in the category.

1. Data: where it stands now

Google Play (googleplay library, app_snap / app_day / chart_rank)

  • Listed 2026-07-25 (official site shortoo.com launch date 2026-07-22); iOS version (id 6784575016) listed 2026-08-02.
  • Cumulative installs: 10-29 23,206 → 10-31 48,945 → 11-02 64,111 → 11-03 72,588 → 11-05 78,758. +55.6k in 8 days, 70% of the cumulative total. Growth took off in that single week. The Play page shows 50K+; AppBrain showed 10,000+ when it was indexed earlier.
  • Rating count: 395 → 1,976 (+1,581 in 8 days, roughly 170–310 a day), average 4.95 → 4.88. Ratings/installs ≈ 2.5%, above typical for entertainment apps, and the average is near perfect. Combined with the official reply in the reviews below about completing Earn Rewards tasks for rewards, this is likely driven by in-app rating prompts plus task rewards (not verified whether ratings are exchanged for coins).
  • Version 1.0.4 → 1.0.5 (11-02 update). Labeled "contains ads + in-app purchases", IAP $0.99–$199.99, plus weekly/monthly subscriptions.
  • Charts: Entertainment Top Grossing holds at ph 43–51, za 40–57, br 49–55, nl 46–78, ng 44–51, plus pl, in, au, id, my, mx, ca. Philippines Top Grossing overall: 107–151. US Entertainment Top Free: 127–200; US Entertainment Top Grossing: 161–192. Top Grossing ranks are far better than Top Free ranks: low installs but heavy spending. Note the Entertainment Top Grossing bar in these countries is low (short-drama apps cluster there anyway), so ranking #50 doesn't mean big revenue.
  • About 6–8 thousand new installs a day (Play install counts update every day or two, so this is averaged over 2 days).

iOS (appstore library, app_profile): US rating count 531 (+158 in the last 7 days), Brazil 93, Philippines 66 (Philippines Top Grossing overall 169), India 54. It sits between #40 and #180 on the Entertainment Top Grossing charts across 70 countries. iOS scale is about the same as Android, both very small.

Sister comparison (googleplay library, developer): GoodNovel's 5 apps have 152M cumulative installs; GoodShort has 98.6M installs, +767k in the last 7 days, and ranks #8 on the Philippines Top Grossing overall chart; GoodNovel 38.9M; Buenovela 12M; MegaNovel 2.72M. Shortoo is the newest and smallest of the company's apps.

2. Competitors

AI short-drama and AI micro-drama apps were already a crowded category in 2026. From our googleplay library (2026-11-06):

Verdict: there is no white space. Shortoo is a late, very small entrant in a crowded category, and its playbook is nearly identical to MoboDrama's (an old web-novel company launching a new pure-AI micro-drama app).

3. Where users come from

  • Paid acquisition: not visible in our libraries. The Google Ads Transparency Center (googleads library) maps Shortoo to no_ads. The TikTok European ad library (tiktokads) is also no_ads. The Meta ad library (metaads) has no advertiser tied to com.newreading.shortoo, and no GoodShort/GoodNovel Pages are on our tracking list (this means they aren't tracked, not that they don't advertise). The Google library only checks the watchlist, and TikTok outside Europe is not visible. So "no paid buying" can't be concluded. About 56k installs a week, mainly in low-CPI markets like the Philippines, South Africa, Brazil and Nigeria, look a lot like the low-cost country test spending the short-drama industry commonly does (unverified).
  • TikTok content / creators: none found. A TikHub search for shortoo finds no videos for this app. @shortoo is an unrelated personal account. By comparison, GoodShort has many TikTok clip accounts that say "search S63750 in GoodShort to watch the full series" (peakdrama218, velvetdrama01 and others, 1.6–250k views per clip). Shortoo doesn't have that network yet.
  • X / Reddit / media: zero. x-radar returns 0 posts for shortoo in the last 90 days. Web search only finds store pages and auto-generated Sensor Tower and AppBrain pages.
  • Cross-promotion from sister apps: possible but unverified. The "customers also bought" list on the App Store includes similar apps like ReadShort and Felveria. Official reply tone, the Earn Rewards system and GoodShort/GoodNovel all match (the developer replies on the Play page are signed GoodNovel). The parent has a GoodShort 98.6M + GoodNovel 38.9M user pool, and cross-recommendation is the cheapest source, but we found no direct evidence.
  • Store search: The name is stacked with "AI Dramas & Comics / Motion Comics / Manga Reels" keywords, and on iOS it has charted in the Entertainment Top Grossing chart across 70 countries, with some organic traffic from the long-tail markets riding on that chart exposure.

4. Why people pay and stay

  • Monetization copies GoodShort directly: coins to unlock episodes, weekly/monthly subscriptions, watch-ads-to-unlock, and Earn Rewards tasks to stack coins. IAP up to $199.99. Users in the Philippines, South Africa, and Brazil also pay, and these markets are GoodShort's strength (GoodShort ranks #8 on the Philippines overall Top Grossing chart).
  • Content: AI-generated romance / fantasy / cyberpunk / mystery short dramas and 2D/3D animated micro-dramas, new releases daily (the official homepage is full of web-novel-style fantasy titles like "Glacial Awakening: Frost's Heir" and "Crescent Moon Curse"). The parent company holds a large catalog of GoodNovel web-novel IP, and turning web novels into AI micro-dramas is the most natural conversion (MoboDrama's approach is the same logic).
  • Negative signals: Play reviews include complaints like "stop scamming and let it be free" and "after watching an ad, the episode count resets to what I've already watched." 4.9's average rating is at odds with what these reviews say, so the good reviews may have been solicited.

5. Differentiation

  • Versus the big human-acted short-drama platforms (GoodShort, DramaBox, ReelShort): Shortoo only carries AI content, which costs an order of magnitude less to produce, so it can ship huge volumes and test in low-price markets. It also won't hurt the reputation of the old platforms' paying users with AI dramas (Reddit already has users complaining that "most apps have been taken over by AI dramas"). Splitting out a new app for AI content is the reason it exists.
  • Versus VibeShort / StoryReel, the pure-AI platforms built from scratch: Shortoo's difference is that it has a web-novel IP library and a mature payment system behind it, so in its first week it charted in a dozen-plus countries' Entertainment Top Grossing charts. Its payer depth leads its install scale.
  • Versus MoboDrama: almost no difference. It's the same playbook, 4 months later.
  • Is differentiation why it broke out? Only half. The product itself has nothing unique. What got it charted is "big-company resources (IP + monetization template + maybe traffic/paid acquisition) × the AI micro-drama going-global wave (DataEye: overseas short-drama app IAP reached $1.27B in H2026, and after AI dramas launched in 5, revenue hit new highs)." Strictly speaking it also hasn't really broken out yet: 79k installs puts it at the very beginning of this track.

6. How visible it is

  • Hardly anyone knows about it yet: no media, X, Reddit, or TikTok discussion, revenue not disclosed; it only appears on the GoodNovel publisher page in Sensor Tower.
  • But the track itself is widely discussed (Huxiu, 36kr, DataEye, CCTV coverage of AI micro-dramas going global), with many players, so "nobody knows Shortoo" doesn't mean "there's an open spot here."

7. Copycats

No one is specifically tracking Shortoo. There are many new apps with the same model (MoboDrama, Plotwheel, CLIFF, RushDrama, AI Drama: Short Series, etc., all small launches from the second half of 2026), but they follow the whole track, not Shortoo.

8. What others can borrow

  1. Launch a new app for a new content type alongside the legacy business: this keeps the main app's reputation untouched while reusing the payment system, IP, and ad-buying team. Reading and Xinyue both did exactly this.
  2. Get on the Entertainment Top Grossing chart first in low-barrier markets: the Entertainment Top 50 threshold in the Philippines / South Africa / Brazil / Nigeria is low. A few tens of thousands of installs plus $199.99-tier payers is enough to chart, which buys chart exposure.
  3. Rating operations: a 2.5% rating prompt rate and 4.9 stars, combined with the task reward system, can quickly build an attractive store rating (while staying within store rules).

9. Uncertain

  • Where users actually come from: paid acquisition (Meta / AppLovin / Unity, etc.), GoodShort in-app cross-promotion, or both. Our ad libraries don't cover this, unverified.
  • Real revenue: at low-barrier-market chart positions, revenue may only be in the thousands of dollars per day (unverified).
  • Whether good reviews were bought with rewards: there are signs (high rating prompt rate, official replies steering users to tasks), unverified.
  • One Sohu self-media post claims "GoodShort and DramaBox merged in spring 2026." The source quality is low with no official release, so it has not been adopted.
  • Retention: reviews complain about "episode reset after ads" and "paywalls," but retention and refund rates are unknown.
