AI PDF Reader: Editor & Audio · NEWSTAR CORPORATION JOINT STOCK COMPANY

# A new Hanoi-based PDF reader with 190k installs in four weeks: it's not selling AI, it's selling paid acquisition

**What it is** A full-featured PDF reading, editing, and scanning app from a small Hanoi company, pitching AI summaries, chat with PDFs, translation, and read-aloud, monetized through ads plus in-app purchases.

**Why it took off** The developer pays for user acquisition and targets countries like Thailand, South Korea, and Croatia, where a few tens of thousands of installs are enough to reach the top 30 of the utility charts. It runs one region at a time, then moves to the next. The "AI" and "Audio" in the title give it an extra search term and ad angle among the many "PDF Reader" apps released at the same time.

**D** **How you could follow** Indie developers shouldn't. Teams with a paid-acquisition budget and a portfolio of utility apps could borrow two tactics: attach a new capability label to an old, established category to launch a new package, and use the category charts of low-barrier small countries as a testing ground. If you really want to build a product, build a read-aloud-first "listen to PDFs" app, but that means competing with Speechify and NotebookLM.

D grade: it ran on paid-acquisition budget and ad monetization to pay back costs, with no product moat. PDF is one of the most crowded categories on Play; in October alone, eight or nine accounts used the same "AI PDF" template within a week, so the label is no longer rare, and following it as an indie dev isn't worth it. Almost nobody knows about it yet

Data 2026-10-29 → 2026-11-07 (10 days, 10 observations)

"AI PDF Reader: Editor & Audio" launched in Oct 8; the developer is a small Hanoi company called NEWSTAR. By Nov 6 it had 193k installs, of which 155k came in the last 7 days, and it made the top 30 of the Google Play utility charts in Thailand, South Korea, and Croatia. Its features are much like hundreds of other PDF readers on the market; the only thing it adds is "AI" and "Audio" in the title. It took off using an old playbook from Vietnam's Android utility factories: attach a new label to an old category, open a new account, pay for installs, and target countries with low chart thresholds to climb the category charts.

### Oct 29,16: several countries at once

On Oct 29, this app, only three weeks old, appeared at the same time on the Google Play utility free charts in 16 countries: #28 in Poland, #24 in Thailand, #31 in Turkey, #30 in Hong Kong, #41 in Taiwan, #70 in Canada, #78 in Germany, and its overall Hong Kong app chart ranking reached #153 (Google Play charts, 10-29). According to Similarweb and Appfigures chart data, it was still #1 on Croatia's utility free chart at that point.

Its cumulative global installs that day were 37,350. Just over thirty thousand installs were enough to show up on category charts in a dozen-plus countries, which shows how low those chart thresholds are.

Over the next week it disappeared from the European and American charts one by one. Starting Nov 2, it was replaced by South Korea (utility chart peak #26,11-05, reaching #167 on Korea's overall app chart), Thailand (utility chart #27, overall app chart #190), and Vietnam. On Nov 6, it was still on Thailand's utility chart at #39, South Korea's at #49, and Vietnam's at #126.

It appears in batches, drops out in batches, and then rotates to a new set of countries. That's what a region-by-region rotation of ad spend looks like, not what organic word-of-mouth looks like.

### What it is

An all-in-one PDF toolkit: viewing, highlighting and annotating, scanning with photos plus OCR, merging and splitting, signing and encrypting, image-to-PDF, file management, all included. The store page leads with three new things: "Read PDF aloud" (tap any text and it starts reading), "AI PDF summary and chat" (condense a long PDF into key points, or just ask the document questions), and PDF translation. The last line on the store page reads: "Read, edit and listen to PDFs. Use AI to summarize, chat and translate." (Google Play store page, 11-06)

Shows ads; in-app purchases are $2.99–9.99 each.

The developer, NEWSTAR CORPORATION JOINT STOCK COMPANY, has a website that is a Firebase template page, with an address in Hanoi and a personal Gmail as its contact. It has three apps on Google Play: this PDF reader, a photo translator, and a "clap to find your phone" app, a typical multi-app account bundle from a Vietnamese utility factory.

### What the numbers look like

| Date | Cumulative global installs | Cumulative ratings |
|---|---|---|
| 10-29 | 37,350 | 335 |
| 10-31 | 85,361 | 521 |
| 11-03 | 165,748 | 643 |
| 11-05 | 176,282 | 744 |
| 11-06 | 192,730 | 774 |

Google Play, 10-29 to 11-06 (the store updates install counts every few days, so the table shows step-like jumps). By third-party estimates of daily curves, it barely moved in the first two weeks after launch, with only about 3k installs by 10-21. From Oct 25 it ran at about 9k per day, rose to 27k–2.4k per day from 10-30 to 11-03, and after Nov 4 it fell back to 0.5–16k per day (AppstoreSpy estimates).

A rating of 4.74 looks fine, but only 1 of the 774 ratings include text. The October rating distribution was 1 41 five-star ratings and 5 293 29 one-star ratings, with not a single entry in the three middle tiers. That's the result of an in-app prompt asking users to tap stars, not users writing reviews in the store. The ratio of ratings to installs also fell from 0.9% to 0.4%: more people install, fewer are willing to rate, which is typical of paid-acquisition users.

### Where users come from

| Channel | What we saw | Can we be sure? |
|---|---|---|
| Paid acquisition | It only gained traction two weeks after launch, then charted and dropped out in country batches; its ratings are all in-app-prompt 1-star and 5-star; no organic content can be found outside the store. | Inferred. Ad creatives weren't directly observed, and which platform it ran on is uncertain (most likely Google's App campaigns). |
| Small-country category charts + store search | In countries like Thailand, South Korea, Croatia, Poland, and Turkey, a few tens of thousands of installs can reach the top 30 of utility charts, and charting brings in some organic traffic on top. The title stuffs four search terms: AI, PDF Reader, Editor, and Audio. | Confirmed (from the charts) |
| Content, creators, social | Searching its name on TikTok returns Speechify and NotebookLM; no results on X in the past 30 days; online there are only auto-generated stats pages from AppBrain and Similarweb. | None |

Where the money comes from: mainly ads (app-open, interstitial, native), plus a little from in-app purchases to remove ads and unlock AI features. It never charted in any country's top-grossing list, so in-app purchase revenue is likely very small (inferred). Ad spend targets cheap-install second- and third-tier countries, and ad revenue is meant to cover acquisition costs. This is the playbook Vietnamese utility makers like iKame, EZTech, and Begamob have run for years.

### Who it's competing with

PDF readers are one of the most crowded niches on Google Play. Since July 2026, 167 new apps with "PDF" in the name have launched; 80 of them passed 100k installs, and 25 passed 1M (Google Play, 11-06).

| Who | Scale | Compared with alternatives |
|---|---|---|
| Adobe Acrobat, WPS Office, CamScanner | 580M–940M installs each | Official big-name products; Acrobat has a paid AI assistant |
| PDF Reader - Easy PDF, EZTech PDF Reader, and other older utility makers | 250M–430M installs; Easy PDF gained 1.85M in the last 7 days | Same paid-acquisition playbook, at a scale two orders of magnitude larger |
| PDF ProX (launched 2025-04) | 33M installs, +1.25M in the last 7 days | Similar new accounts that already scaled |
| PDF Pilot, PDF Editor Offline, Reampo (2026-09 through October) | 70–900k installs each | Same-period new accounts, selling "all-in-one" and "offline"; their volume is bigger |
| AI PDF Reader & Scanner(Gushan,2026-07) | 458k installs | Used the "AI PDF" name earlier, without read-aloud |
| ChatPDF, Speechify, NotebookLM, Gemini | Big | These are the products actually built around "AI reads PDFs, listens to PDFs" |

Among the new PDF apps of 2026, it's only mid-tier.

### How much "AI + Audio" matters

Functionally, AI summaries just need a call to a large-model API, and read-aloud uses the system's built-in speech synthesis; anyone can add them. What's actually different is that it wrote these two features into the title: most new apps of the same period were still called "PDF Reader - Tools" or "PDF Viewer."

That gave it a new search term ("AI PDF"), and the ad creatives could use different wording too, so click-through and conversion probably got a bit better (inferred). But the main reason it took off is still paid acquisition plus small-country charts. There's no evidence users came for the AI angle, and retention doesn't show it either. Not a single text review.

And the label is already common. Between Oct 12 and 19, at least eight new accounts with Vietnamese backgrounds used nearly the same name and description template, each opening with "📄 <name> helps you … Summarize long files with AI":

| App | Developer | Launched | Installs (11-06) |
|---|---|---|---|
| PDF Reader: Smart AI Assistant | Dien Tu Teach | 10-15 | 24k |
| PDF Reader & AI Toolkit | VIETBASE | 10-14 | 18k |
| AI PDF Reader: All PDF Tools | VT - CONS | 10-12 | 13k |
| PDF Reader: AI & Translate | Vietnam (Gaming) Solution | 10-18 | 12k |
| PDF Reader: Edit & AI Summary | SONG PHAT DENTAL | 10-12 | 11k |
| PDF Reader: AI PDF Assistant | ONIS HAIR | 10-19 | 9k |

(Google Play, 11-06) One developer name is a dental company, another a hair salon. Registering developer accounts under unrelated company names is common in Vietnamese tool circles. These are more likely output from the same outsourcing shop or template vendor than copies of NEWSTAR (inferred, unverified). NEWSTAR was the earliest to launch in this batch and the biggest.

### How many people know about it

Almost nobody. No public revenue, no press coverage, nobody on X is talking about it, and it only shows up on a few auto-generated chart sites. But this playbook is a known industry practice in Vietnamese Android tool circles and isn't new.

### If it were you

**Bottom line** : don't copy it. This is a paid-acquisition business, not a product business. PDF readers are one of the most crowded categories on Play, and the same "AI PDF" template spawned eight or nine accounts within a week. The two ideas worth taking are: stick a new trend label on an old essential category to grab search terms, and use low-barrier small-country category charts as a testing ground.

**Who it suits** : teams already running Android tool portfolios, with ad budgets and a clear sense of how long ad monetization takes to pay back. For them, this is just another package to test with reskins.

**Who it doesn't suit** : indie devs who can't run ads and don't have tens of thousands of dollars for testing; anyone hoping to win on features (AI summaries and read-aloud are easy for anyone to add, so there's no moat); anyone hoping for subscriptions (users brought in by paid ads don't write reviews, and they're even less likely to pay monthly).

**How to do it** : if you're already this kind of team, pick a stable-demand category like PDF, scanning, or translation, put one concrete new capability (AI, read-aloud, offline) in the title, and ship a new package. Show the rating prompt right after a user finishes using a feature. If you're an indie dev looking for the gap it left open, the direction is "listen to PDFs" itself: an app built around read-aloud, with good voices and resume-where-you-left-off playback. But that puts you up against Speechify and NotebookLM, not this app.

**How to get users** : start with Google App campaigns, testing small budgets in cheap-install countries like Thailand, South Korea, Vietnam, Croatia, Poland, and Turkey, where a few tens of thousands of installs can get you into the top 30 of the Tools chart. Once you're on the category chart, you get a round of organic traffic. Rotate to the next country when one gets saturated.

**Is there a window to get in early?** : No, there's no window left to catch. The "AI PDF" label was already taken up by a batch of template accounts in October, and the later you go, the less it's worth.

**What would mean this read is wrong** : (1) It enters a Top Grossing chart for tools or productivity in some country before December, which would mean people really are buying the AI in-app purchases and this isn't just an ad business. It would be worth looking at again. (2) A few of the same-template accounts from that batch pass 500k installs within a month, meaning the "AI PDF" keyword still drives volume and the barrier is lower than it looks. (3) The reverse: if after mid-November its daily installs fall to a few thousand a day and it drops off every country chart, that means this round of spending didn't pay back, and even the people running it stopped.

### Data and sources

- Google Play store listing and developer page (11-06); developer website newstarapps-c9dc4.web.app.

- Google Play installs, ratings, and charts by country, 10-29 to 11-06; the daily curve since launch is estimated from AppstoreSpy.

- Croatia charts: Similarweb, Appfigures (late October).

- Similar and same-template new accounts: Google Play apps launched after 2026-07 with PDF in the name, as of 11-06.

- Social: searched TikTok and X (11-06), found nothing relevant. Meta Ad Library has no advertiser for it, so the ad creatives were not directly viewed.

**Research notes: competitor table, acquisition evidence, full research report**

Competitors

| Name | Where | Launched | Scale | How it differs from this one |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Adobe Acrobat Reader | Android | 2010 | About 940M installs | Big-brand official app with a paid AI Assistant subscription. This one is a new brand-less app that relies on paid acquisition and free AI messaging. |
| WPS Office | Android | 2011 | About 830M installs | Full office suite. This one only does PDF, and its title leads with AI and read-aloud. |
| PDF Reader - Easy PDF(QR Code Scanner.) | Android | 2022 | About 430M installs, +7M in the last 1.85 days. | Same playbook from the same paid-acquisition tool shop, but two orders of magnitude bigger. It adds AI and Audio tags. |
| PDF ProX(Office Suite Pro) | Android | 2025-04 | About 33M installs, +7M in the last 1.25 days. | Similar new accounts have already scaled up. This is a later wave, with AI as the new selling point. |
| PDF Pilot / PDF Editor Offline / Reampo and other new accounts from 2026. | Android | 2026-09 to 10 | 70–900k installs each | Contemporary new accounts mostly pitched Tools / Offline. This one pitches AI summaries plus read-aloud, and its volume is smaller than those. |
| AI PDF Reader & Scanner(Gushan Technology) | Android | 2026-07 | About 460K installs | Used the "AI PDF" name earlier. This one added Audio read-aloud and ramped up faster. |
| ChatPDF / Speechify / NotebookLM / Gemini | Web | From ¥2023 | Big | These are the products that really center on AI reading or listening to PDFs. This one just adds an AI layer on top of a local PDF toolbox. |

Where users come from

- Inferred **Paid acquisition (inferred to be Google App campaigns)** : volume only picked up 2 weeks after launch, 10-29 it appeared on the Tools charts in 16 countries at once, and within a week the whole footprint rotated to South Korea, Thailand, and Vietnam. That's the pattern of country-by-country rotation, not word of mouth. 774 ratings came with only 1 text reviews, and the distribution was only 1/5-star (rating-prompt pattern). No organic content at all. It doesn't appear in the googleads or metaads libraries, so the creatives weren't directly seen.

- **Confirmed** **Small-country category charts + store search keywords** : peaked at Tools 24 in Thailand, 26 in South Korea, 23 in Hong Kong, 28 in Poland, and 25 in Turkey. Similarweb puts it at #1 in Croatia Tools, 10-29. The title stacks AI / PDF Reader / Editor / Audio.

- Inferred **Content / creators / social** : searches on TikTok and X turned up nothing for it in the last 30 days. The only web pages are auto-generated stats sites.

## Why AI PDF Reader: Editor & Audio (com.newstar.aipdf.pdfreader.pdfeditor) took off

> Channel: Google Play. Developer: NEWSTAR CORPORATION JOINT STOCK COMPANY (Hanoi, Vietnam). Research date 2026-11-06.

### Bottom line

This didn't come from product strength. It's the standard playbook of Vietnamese Android tool shops: **take a red-ocean category (PDF readers), attach a new trend label (AI summaries / chat / read-aloud), open a new account, buy installs to climb small-country category charts, and earn back the cost through ads plus in-app purchases** . Among the same batch of "AI PDF Reader" template apps, it launched first (10-08) and got the most volume. Its differentiation is only in store copy and title keywords, so it has no moat, and a string of reskinned accounts has already followed.

### 1. What it is

A full-featured PDF toolbox: reading, annotation, scan OCR, merge and split, signing and encryption, conversion, file management, plus three "AI" selling points: AI summaries / chat with PDFs, PDF translation, and TTS read-aloud (the "Audio" in the title). Ad-supported (ad_supported = True), with in-app purchases of $2.99–$9.99. (Source: Google Play store page, Jina scrape 2026-11-06; googleplay library app_snap.)

Developer: NEWSTAR CORPORATION JOINT STOCK COMPANY. The official website is just a Firebase template page, newstarapps-c9dc4.web.app, the address is Tram Troi, Hanoi, and the contact email is a personal gmail (devilandangel003@gmail.com). The developer's Play page lists 3 apps in total: this one, Translate - Photo, Chat, PDF, and Clap And Find My Phone. That's a typical Vietnamese tool-portfolio combination. (Sources: developer website, Play developer page, 2026-11-06.)

### 2. Growth data

- Global cumulative installs (Google Play library, exact store figures): 10-29 for 37,350,11-06, 192,730; in the last 7 days +155,380.

- Since launch (app_day_ext, AppstoreSpy estimates): 10-08 launched, 10-21 about 3,164,10-27 about 37,320,10-31 about 85,361,11-03 about 165,748. Daily installs started at about 9k/day from 10-25, climbed to about 2.4–27k/day during 10-30~11-03, then fell back to 0.5–16k/day after 11-04.

- Ratings: 774 total, 4.74 average, but **only 1 text reviews** . The distribution started out almost entirely at 1 and 5 stars ([41,0,0,0,293], 10-29), which suggests the ratings came mostly from an in-app prompt, not organic reviews. The ratings-to-installs ratio dropped from 0.9% to 0.4%, with volume growing faster than ratings, which fits the profile of paid-acquisition users.

- Chart (Google Play library, chart_rank): 10-29 hit the Tools Top Free chart in 16 storefronts at once (HK #30, PL #28, TH #24, TR #31, TW #41, CA #70, DE #78, and more; overall HK chart #153). From 11-01, the European and American storefronts dropped off one by one, and from 11-02 the charting shifted to Korea (peak Tools #26,11-05, also overall Korea chart #167), Thailand (Tools #27, overall chart #190), and Vietnam. Similarweb / Appfigures show that around 10-29 it was still Croatia's Tools Top Free #1 (that storefront is not in our database).

### 3. Where users came from (growth tactics)

| Channel | Evidence | Confirmed |
|---|---|---|
| Google paid acquisition (UAC-style App campaigns) | Volume only picked up 2 weeks after launch, then it appeared on category charts in 16 countries at once and within a week the whole footprint rotated to South Korea, Thailand, and Vietnam. That pattern of batches appearing and disappearing country by country is geographic rotation of spend, not word of mouth. Ratings are all 1/5-star rating-prompt entries with almost no text reviews, and there's no organic content (see below). Our googleads library doesn't track it (it isn't on the list), and the Meta library has no advertiser for it, so the specific ad platform wasn't directly observed. | Inferred, creatives not directly observed |
| Small-country category charts / store search | In countries like Thailand, South Korea, and Croatia the Tools category has a low bar: a few tens of thousands of installs can get you into the top 30, and charting brings extra organic exposure. The title stacks four search terms: AI / PDF Reader / Editor / Audio. | Yes (chart data) |
| Content / creators / social media | Searching TikTok for "AI PDF Reader Editor Audio" returns Speechify, NotebookLM, Peech, and similar apps, not this one. Nothing on X (x-radar, last 30 days). Web search only turns up auto-generated pages like AppBrain, Similarweb, and Appfigures. | No, none |
| Press / celebrities / migration of existing users | None. The developer is a new account with no existing user base to migrate. | No |

**Where the money comes from** : mainly ad monetization (interstitial / app-open / native, ad_supported), plus in-app purchases of $2.99–$9.99 for ad removal / AI. The spend goes to second- and third-tier countries with cheap CPI, and ad revenue covers the acquisition cost. This is the economic model Vietnamese tool shops (iKame, EZTech, Begamob, etc.) have run for years. It never hit a top-grossing chart, so in-app purchase revenue is probably small.

### 4. Competitors

This category is one of the most crowded on Play. In the googleplay library, 2026-07 apps launched after 167 with "PDF" in the title, of which 80 passed 100k installs and 25 passed 1M (as of 2026-11-06).

- Giants / big companies: Adobe Acrobat Reader (940M installs), WPS Office (830M), CamScanner (580M). Google's built-in Files / Drive PDF viewer, and Gemini itself can summarize PDFs.

- Established tool shops: PDF Reader - Easy PDF (QR Code Scanner., 430M), EZTech PDF Reader (250M), the iKame/Begamob series (110M+ combined), the Simple Design series.

- New accounts from 2026 using the same playbook: PDF ProX (Office Suite Pro, launched 2025-04, 33M, +7M in the last 1.25 days), Readdock - PDF Tools (11.4M), PDF Reader: View All PDFs (Lumio Tech, 21.2M), PDF Editor Offline (NANO SOLUTIONS, 2026-09-5.78M), PDF Pilot (Suffron, 2026-09-18.7M), Reampo (DongRuaLabs, 2026-10-13.9M).

- Also AI-focused: AI PDF Reader & Scanner (Gushan Technology, 2026-07-16.5M); web and cross-platform players ChatPDF, Speechify, NaturalReader, NotebookLM (PDF to podcast).

In 2026, its scale is only mid-tier among new PDF apps: several newer apps of the same period were bigger.

### 5. What's the differentiation, and is it why it broke out?

- Feature-wise, it's almost identical to other PDF toolkits. The one thing it pushes up front is **AI summary / chat + read-aloud** , and it puts "AI" and "Audio" in the title. Most new apps of the same period still have titles like "PDF Reader - Tools / Viewer / Editor."

- That's a difference in positioning and keywords, not a product moat: AI summaries take a single LLM API call, and read-aloud is just the system TTS.

- Did it break out because of this? **Only partly** . The main driver was paid acquisition plus pushing up category charts in low-barrier small countries. The "AI" label likely lifted creative and store-page CTR and conversion a bit under the same spend, and opened a new search term ("AI PDF"). There's no evidence users came for the AI features, and retention is unknown (no written reviews to check).

### 6. Are others copying it / visibility

- **Copies (or the same template) have already appeared** : between 10-12 and 10-19, at least 5 new apps with Vietnamese ties used nearly identical naming and description templates, all opening with "📄 <name> helps you … Summarize long files with AI, ask questions about its content": VT - CONS "AI PDF Reader: All PDF Tools" (10-1.21M), SONG PHAT DENTAL (a dental company's account) "PDF Reader: Edit & AI Summary" (10-1.21M), Vietnam (Gaming) Solution "PDF Reader: AI & Translate" (10-1.81M); there are also Dien Tu Teach "PDF Reader: Smart AI Assistant," VIETBASE "PDF Reader & AI Toolkit," BUSSID STUDIO, Shop Moon, and ONIS HAIR (a hair salon's account), all "PDF Reader + AI" apps. Opening developer accounts under company names unrelated to software, like dental or hair businesses, is a common "borrowed shell account" practice in Vietnamese tool circles. They may be output from the same outsourcer or template seller, not necessarily copying NEWSTAR. (googleplay library, app table, 2026-11-06)

- Visibility: **few people know about it yet** . No public revenue, no press or X coverage; it only shows up on automated ranking pages like AppBrain, Similarweb, and Appfigures. But this playbook is a known norm in Vietnamese Android tool circles, not a novelty.

### 7. What others can learn

1. Old category, new hype label: in PDF, scanning, and translation categories with steady demand, put "AI" and a specific capability ("Audio") in the title to capture new search terms and differentiate creatives.

2. Buy cheap installs in low-CPI, low-chart-barrier countries (Thailand, Korea, Vietnam, Croatia, Poland, Turkey). A few tens of thousands of installs can push it into the top 30 of a category chart, with some organic traffic on top. Run one region, then switch to the next.

3. Open a matrix of new accounts: one account publishes 3 tool apps, the same template is reskinned across multiple accounts, and whichever breaks out gets more spend.

4. Use the in-app rating prompt to quickly push a new app's star rating to 4.7.

For indie developers, the barrier isn't the code, it's **ad budget and an ROAS model** . If you can't model when ad monetization pays back, this path won't work.

### 8. Still unclear

- I didn't see the actual platform they spent on (Google UAC, Meta, or TikTok) or any creatives; our ad library doesn't track it.

- Retention and real revenue are unknown: it hasn't reached the grossing charts, and there are only 1 written reviews.

- Whether it's the same owner or outsourcer as those template-matched Vietnamese apps, or whether they're copying each other, is unverified.

- After 11-04, daily installs dropped from over 20k to 0.5–16k. Whether spend pulled back or they're just shifting regions will take a few more days to tell.
