# "TikTok for smart people": how the French common-sense app GenK squeezed into the education top grossing chart with 70k installs

**What it is** A French common-knowledge app where you scroll knowledge cards like TikTok and then take quizzes. Without a subscription you can barely use it.

**Why it took off** The iOS version already proved the subscription model with Meta ads and the French "culture G" anxiety about general knowledge. When the Android version launched, the same ads brought French Android users in directly.

**B** **How you could follow it** Pick a language GenK hasn't seriously worked on but that has ready "common knowledge" vocabulary (Japanese, Korean, Turkish, Polish, Indonesian, etc.). Copy its cards, quizzes and paywall into a local version, let AI write the content with human fact-checking, and test small Meta/TikTok budgets with real-person vertical videos that pitch "swap doomscrolling for long-form knowledge".

Grade B: copying the model into other languages works, and a small team using AI content plus paid ads can reach the top 20 in education top grossing. But it's a pure ad business, the category is already crowded in English, GenK itself has expanded into Spanish, Portuguese, Italian and German, and France already has copycats. The paywall reputation is also poor. The gaps have to be found by you, and you bet on your own acquisition costs. Buzz in niche circles

GenK is a Paris three-person team's app for "long-form knowledge in a few minutes a day": you scroll knowledge cards like TikTok, take quizzes afterward, and without paying you can barely use it. It only launched on Google Play in September 10, and within two months it reached #7 in France's free education chart and #14 in the top grossing chart. It looks like a new app ramping up, but it's really a subscription business that has run on the iPhone for two years, with the same ads and paywall moved over to Android. Below: what it sells, where the users come from, who is copying it, and whether you can rebuild it in another language.

### An ad that impersonates an astronaut

On 2026 Aug 5, French tech outlet BFM Tech ran a story with a long headline: "It made people think Thomas Pesquet recommended it, and it writes its lessons with AI…" Pesquet is a French astronaut who has been to the ISS and is very popular in France. The report says that for several weeks, a GenK ad appeared in Instagram Stories, Facebook and X, pairing a video with a "post by Pesquet":

> "An app that gives you as much dopamine as TikTok, with the same mechanics. Except every card teaches you something real."

The post also said "CEOs of tech companies are quietly using it, and almost nobody knows about it." Pesquet never wrote any of this and never authorized it. The developer, Noerden, said the ads were handed to an outside acquisition service that used its own platform, that they didn't know about it, and that they've had it taken down. BFM also reports that Meta had already pulled several of its ads for violations, and that some of the awards shown in the app, like "Apple's best brain training app" and "App of the Day," don't exist.

When the report came out, GenK's iOS version ranked #56 on the French App Store. A month later it launched on Google Play.

### What it is

Open GenK and you get vertical-scroll knowledge cards: who Frida Kahlo was, why muscles cramp, whether the Medici family were financial criminals. Each takes one to three minutes, can be read or listened to, and includes a dyslexia-friendly font. After finishing a topic you take a quiz, then review it again later. The whole interface is styled like a retro video game, with a level map, a streak flame, XP and sound effects. An iPhoneSoft review from Oct 10 says it has 20 topics and 20k+ cards. There's also a "doomscroll lock": if you haven't met your daily learning goal, TikTok and Instagram won't open.

Its French name is simply "GenK : Culture Générale." "Culture générale" (general knowledge, often shortened to "culture G") carries weight in France: it's tested in the baccalauréat, in elite school interviews and in civil service exams, and not knowing the answers at the dinner table is embarrassing. GenK sells that anxiety, plus the guilt of endless scrolling. The first line of its Play Store description is "What if your scrolling could actually make you smarter?"

Most of the content is written by AI. The official site itself says "the team picks topics and courses, and uses AI to make the content better," and BFM and many user reviews have pointed out factual errors in the cards.

### How big it is

| Metric | value | Sources |
|---|---|---|
| Google Play cumulative installs | 71,943, one week ago 63,714 | Google Play,11-06 / 10-29 |
| New in the last 7 days | 8,229, about 1,200 a day | Google Play, 10-29 to 11-06 |
| France Play Education chart | Top Free #7–13, Top Grossing #12–17, every day | Google Play chart, 10-29 to 11-06 |
| iOS version | Launched 2024-10-07; 4,715 ratings on the French store, 4.56 stars | App Store,11-06 |
| iOS ratings in other stores | Mexico 1,499, Brazil 514, Chile 337, Argentina 317, Italy 201, Germany 154, US 876 | App Store,11-06 |
| Pricing | Play in-app purchases $1.99–79.99; iPhoneSoft lists monthly from €2.99, plus a lifetime one-time purchase; user reviews often describe the yearly plan as €40 | Google Play; iPhoneSoft 10-10; App Store French reviews |

The most telling number is the grossing chart. Near #14 on the French Play Education Top Grossing chart sit apps like Talkpal (6.38M installs) and Simply Guitar (15.7M). GenK holds the same spot with 70k+ installs, which means each installer pays a lot on average. That matches its paywall.

### Where users come from

**The main engine is Meta ads.** The BFM report already spells out the playbook: heavy spend on Instagram Stories, Facebook and X, with "TikTok for smart people" as the hook, and the buying outsourced to a service provider. Meta ads reach iPhone and Android users alike, so when the Android version launched on Sep 10, the French Android users who had clicked an ad but couldn't install it could finally get in. This is the most likely explanation (inference) for why the Android version reached the top ten of the free education chart in its first week.

**The TikTok account is a creative library, not organic reach.** @genk.app has posted 800+ videos and has only 2,400 followers. Most videos from the last two months got a few hundred to a thousand views. The most-viewed one is from 2025 Feb 18: "How does Lucie top up her culture G every day? Obviously with GenK!", with 4.73M views (TikTok, 11-06). For an account with two thousand followers to get a 4-million-view product video, it was almost certainly paid promotion (inference).

**Swapping titles by country to grab search terms.** The iOS version uses the local phrase for "general knowledge" as the title in each storefront: Spanish-speaking markets get "aprende cultura general," Brazil gets "Cultura Geral e Quiz," Italy gets "Cultura Generale Quiz," Germany gets "Allgemeinwissen Quiz." As a result, in small countries like Guatemala, Paraguay and El Salvador, it reaches #4–6 on the iOS free education chart.

**Some endorsements too.** The Australian App Store ran an editorial feature, "Apps We Love: GenK," about the three French founders Cécile du Passage, Benjamin Plessis and Christophe Cermolacce. That part is real. iPhoneSoft published a long positive review about a month after the Android launch, and there's no way to tell whether it was paid.

### Where the money comes from, and how users complain

All revenue comes from subscriptions, not ads. BFM's August piece describes two free topics and three exercises per day. By 9 and October, nearly every negative review on the French App Store said the same thing: the free part is nearly gone.

> "A 15-minute questionnaire, and at the end it tells you 40 euros a year. I'm giving one star because I can't give zero." (App Store France, 10-28)

> "From 0 euros, to 39 euros, and finally €19 a year." (10-04, headline. Inferred: there's a retention discount behind the paywall)

> "First time I installed it, I started the 3-day free trial and wanted to cancel right away so I wouldn't forget, but the cancel button was hidden and I couldn't find it." (10-23)

> "The ad said it was free, but without paying you can barely see anything." (10-07)

Some people like it: "I scroll social media way less" (10-30), "It's become a daily habit" (8-27). The rating is still 4.56 stars, which suggests most paying users are happy and the complaints come mainly from non-payers. The sequence of "long questionnaire to personalize → paywall → 3-day trial → retention discount" is the standard playbook for English-language subscription apps, and GenK has transplanted it into French as is.

### Who it's competing with

The category itself isn't new. English-speaking markets had prototypes long before:

| Product | Scale | Relation to GenK |
|---|---|---|
| Nibble: Daily Learning & Quiz | Play 2.96M installs; French iOS 1,502 ratings | Nearly identical format; GenK even uses the same Play subtitle |
| SmartyMe | Play 2.89M; 7-day +168k | Micro-learning subscription with the same heavy paid acquisition, English market, longer lessons |
| Imprint | Play 1.37M | Visual long-form courses, leaning toward books and psychology |
| Headway | Play 31.8M | Book summaries, not general knowledge |
| Long-running French quiz apps (Quiz Culture Générale and others) | French iOS 28k / 12k ratings | Pure quizzes with ads, no learn-then-test, no subscription |

Numbers from Google Play and the App Store, data as of 11-06.

Locals are already copying it. Sophia : Culture Générale launched in 2026 April with the tagline "learn something new in 5 minutes a day." It has 606 ratings on the French iOS store, peaked at #54 on the education grossing chart, and is iOS-only for now. Curioz, Fastoche! and Vulpin, small projects from French indie developers, are also in the space, each with only dozens to a hundred ratings.

### What it actually does right

The product isn't new. It gets three things right:

1. **It picked a word that only means something locally.** In English, Nibble sells "learn something every day." GenK sells "culture G," the unease French people carry from school. Same product, but when you find a term locals instantly understand and actually search for, the ads write themselves.

2. **It uses AI to bring content costs down to a level a small team can sustain across five languages.** 20k+ cards and 20+ topics, at the price of errors and bad reviews.

3. **It got the ads and paywall working on iPhone first, then added Android.** Creatives, branding and payment flow were already built. Android just opened one more tap.

### If it were you

**Verdict: B, worth a test.** The route of "take the micro-learning subscription that works in English and rebuild it around another country's own 'general knowledge anxiety'" is viable. GenK shows that a small team with AI content and outsourced paid acquisition can reach #20 on the education grossing chart. But it's an ad-driven business in a category that's already crowded in English, and GenK has itself moved into Spanish, Portuguese, Italian and German, so the languages left open you'll have to find yourself.

**Who it suits:** a team of 1–3 people, with at least one person who has run Meta or TikTok ads and can calculate trial-to-paid conversion and cost per paying user; a mother tongue that is a major language GenK hasn't seriously worked on, and that has a ready-made "general knowledge" term: Japanese "教養" and "雑学," Korean "상식," Turkish "genel kültür," Polish "wiedza ogólna," Indonesian "pengetahuan umum." (Whether anyone is advertising in these markets was not checked market by market when this was written.)

**Who it doesn't suit:** teams that won't run paid ads and are counting on organic store traffic; anyone aiming at English or French (English has SmartyMe adding 168k installs a week and Nibble at nearly 3M, French already has GenK and Sophia); anyone who can't stomach one-star reviews full of "they're scamming us."

**How to build it:** follow GenK's structure: vertical-scroll cards (read plus listen) → a quiz after each topic → spaced review → streaks and a level map; then add a "doomscroll lock" as the selling point. Generate content in bulk with AI, but have a person verify facts item by item. Half of GenK's bad reviews complain about price, and half complain about wrong content. Launch on iOS first, price monthly at about €3 and yearly at €20–40, with a 3-day trial. Don't hide the cancel option: in French reviews, "can't find how to cancel" is the thing that does the most damage to reputation.

**How to get users:** one angle for creatives is enough: "swap your TikTok scrolling time for long-form knowledge," with vertical videos featuring a real person (GenK's 4.73M-view video is exactly "a girl shows how she uses it every day"). In one country, test twenty to thirty creatives on a small budget, then scale only the one or two that make the trial-to-paid math work. Don't impersonate celebrities or invent awards. GenK has already made the news for that and had its ads pulled by Meta.

**When to be in market:** 2027 January is peak season for "new year, better me" subscriptions. The best plan is to be on iOS and testing creatives by mid-December. If you miss it, the next window is the September school start.

**Signs you've misread the opportunity:** ① GenK's Android version drops out of the top 2027 education grossing chart in France before 30 January, which would mean Android payers can't carry it and it's living off old iOS revenue; ② the language you chose still hasn't brought trial costs down after 30 creatives; ③ big players like Nibble or SmartyMe launch a local version in your language and start spending. You can't outbid their budgets.

Where users come from

- **Verified** **Meta/Instagram/X paid ads (external ad agency)** : BFM Tech 2026-08-05: ran heavy ads on Instagram Stories, Facebook and X. One ad falsely used Thomas Pesquet's endorsement and was pulled; Meta had already removed several of its ads. At the time of the report, the iOS app was #56 on the French App Store.

- **Verified** **TikTok/Instagram UGC-style short videos** : TikTok @genk.app has 801 videos and 2,415 followers. The top video got 520K views, far above the follower count, which looks like ad creative being run (TikHub 2026-11-06).

- **Verified** **Apple editorial features** : App Store Australia ran an editorial story, "Apps We Love: GenK". The official site claims US App of the Day wins, but BFM says some of the awards are fake.

- **Verified** **Multilingual ASO** : iOS swaps titles by storefront (Culture Générale / aprende cultura general / Cultura Geral / Allgemeinwissen). Ranked #4–6 on the free Education chart in small Latin American markets.

- Inferred **Media reviews** : iPhoneSoft.fr published a long positive review 2026-10-10, one month after the Android launch. Whether it was paid is unverified.

- Inferred **iOS brand and ads carried over to Android** : Android launched 2026-09-10 and reached the top 10 of the French Education free chart within two months. The site shows store buttons for both platforms.

## GenK: Daily Learning & Quiz (GenK : Culture Générale), why it's breaking out

- Channel: Google Play (com.noerden.gproject), developer NOERDEN (Paris)

- One line: a mostly-French "1–5 minutes a day of long-form general knowledge" app. It serves knowledge cards you scroll like TikTok, with a Duolingo-style learning path and quizzes, sold as a subscription.

- Bottom line: **this isn't a new product. It's a French subscription app that already worked on iOS, ported to Android.** The iOS version launched 2024-10 and grew on aggressive Meta/Instagram paid ads (one scandal involved a fake Thomas Pesquet endorsement), TikTok UGC-style content and Apple editorial features. When 2026-09-10 hit Google Play, the same ads and branding moved over, and within 2 months it reached #7 on the French Education free chart and #14 on the grossing chart.

| iOS French Education chart | Best grossing rank #16; grossing #15 in Mexico, free #22 in Brazil | appstore.app_profile |

For reference: around #14 on the French Education grossing chart sit big apps like Talkpal (6.38M installs), Simply Guitar (15.7M) and HelloTalk. GenK reached the same spot with 72K installs, which suggests **very high paid conversion and ARPU per user** . That fits an iOS version that was already a paywall-driven subscription machine, with Android inheriting the same paywall.

### 2. Competitors

| Product | Where | Launched | Scale | How GenK differs |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Nibble: Daily Learning & Quiz(Kremital) | iOS/Android | iOS 2022-11,Play 2025-05 | Play 2.96M installs; French iOS 1,502 ratings | Nearly the same format (topic lessons + quizzes), founded on English. GenK even uses the same Play subtitle, "Daily Learning & Quiz", but its French localization goes deeper. |
| Imprint: Learn Visually(Polywise) | iOS/Android | 2019 | Play 1.37M; French iOS 1,070 ratings | Longer visual lessons, leaning toward nonfiction books and psychology, English-first |
| SmartyMe(Apextech) | iOS/Android | 2024-11 | Play 2.89M; 7-day +168k | Similar paid-acquisition micro-learning subscription with longer courses (15 min), English market |
| Headway | iOS/Android | 2019 | Play 31.8M | Mostly book summaries, not "trivia / general knowledge" |
| Funda: Daily learning in 1 Min | Android | Unknown | Play 29M, +1.07M in 7 days | Indian market, short-video knowledge, little overlap with GenK |
| Uptime / Elevate / Brilliant | iOS/Android | 2014–2021 | 490K / 28.8M / 7.37M | Book summaries / brain training / STEM, not general knowledge |
| Quiz Culture Générale Français (Marco Batista), Quiz Culture Générale (ZipoApps), Erudit, Super Quiz | iOS/Android | 2014–2020 | French iOS 28K / 12K / 5,943 ratings; Super Quiz Play 735K | Pure quiz games monetized with ads, no "learn first, then test" content layer, no subscription |
| Sophia : Culture Générale(Vik Studios) | iOS | 2026-04-07 | 606 ratings in France, best Education grossing rank #54 | French "5 minutes a day of long-form general knowledge", nearly copying GenK's positioning (see "Copycats") |
| Curioz, Atlasium, Vulpin, Fastoche!, MyGrowth, etc. | iOS | 2025–2026 | Each has dozens to a hundred ratings | Small French indie developer apps in the same niche, not yet gaining traction |
| Wikipedia / Kiwix, YouTube knowledge channels | Web / big players | — | — | Free, but no daily habit, gamification or quizzes |

Bottom line: **the niche isn't new and competition is heavy** (Nibble/Imprint/SmartyMe are the English-market prototypes). GenK's position is "the local Nibble for French, and Spanish/Portuguese/Italian markets."

### 3. Growth tactics

1. **Paid social ads (confirmed, the main driver)** : BFM Tech 2026-08-05 reported that GenK ran heavy ads on Instagram Stories, Facebook and X, pitching "TikTok for smart people." One ad falsely used astronaut Thomas Pesquet's "endorsement." Noerden said the ads were run by an **external ad agency using its own platform** , and the ad was taken down. BFM also says Meta had already removed several of its violating ads. At the time of the report, the iOS app ranked #56 on the French App Store. Source: [www.bfmtv.com/tech/vie-numerique/elle-fait-croire-que-thomas…](https://www.bfmtv.com/tech/vie-numerique/elle-fait-croire-que-thomas-pesquet-la-recommande-elle-utilise-l-ia-pour-ses-lecons-gen-k-l-application-de-culture-generale-aux-pratiques-peu-orthodoxes-et-au-francais-approximatif_AN-202608050394.html). Our metaads database doesn't cover it (it isn't on our tracking list), which doesn't mean it didn't run ads.

2. **TikTok / Instagram UGC-style content (confirmed)** : TikTok @genk.app posted 801 videos, 2,415 followers, 110K likes. The top video got 520K views (2025-06) and 145K (2025-03), far above the follower count. That looks like ad creative or Spark Ads being run (not verified). Instagram @genk.app also posts Reels and "10 culture G questions" posts. Smaller creators have also featured it (2024-11,6K views). Source: TikHub 2026-11-06.

3. **Apple editorial feature (partly confirmed)** : App Store Australia has an editorial story, "Apps We Love: GenK" (https://apps.apple.com/au/iphone/story/id1807341353), profiling three French founders: Cécile du Passage, Benjamin Plessis and Christophe Cermolacce. The official site claims App of the Day in the US store twice (2025 and 2026) and lists "Best Brain-Training Apps" and "Our Favorites" (French store). But **BFM says the "Best Brain-Training App" and "App of the Day" awards are fake** . The details conflict, unverified.

4. **Multilingual ASO (confirmed)** : The iOS app swaps titles by storefront: French "Culture Générale", Spanish "aprende cultura general", Portuguese "Cultura Geral e Quiz", Italian "Cultura Generale Quiz", German "Allgemeinwissen Quiz". It targets "general knowledge" keywords in each country. The Play French title is also "GenK : Culture Générale". In small Latin American markets (Guatemala, Paraguay, El Salvador, Nicaragua) it reached #4–6 on the iOS free Education chart.

5. **Press / reviews (confirmed to exist, paid status unverified)** : iPhoneSoft.fr published a long positive review, "GenK : une super app pour apprendre tous les jours !", 2026-10-10, one month after the Android launch. Source: [iphonesoft.fr/2026/10/10/genk-super-app-apprendre-jours](https://iphonesoft.fr/2026/10/10/genk-super-app-apprendre-jours)

6. **iOS brand and users moving to Android (inferred)** : The site shows store buttons for both platforms. Android launched and immediately reached the top 10 of the French Education free chart. That's too fast for a new package, and looks more like the same ads plus branded search flowing over directly.

### 4. Why it took off

- **Why users are showing up now** : The Android version launched only 2026-09-10, and French Android users couldn't get it before. Paid ads (Meta ads naturally span iOS and Android) opened up Android, and pent-up demand plus ads came in together.

- **Where installs come from** : mainly paid Meta/Instagram/TikTok short video plus branded search. Play installs are almost entirely from France (the French Education chart is the only real ranking).

- **Why people pay** : The free tier is small. BFM reports you get two topics a day and three exercises, and more requires a subscription (monthly/annual). Audio is also paid (some App Store reviews complain about this). The pitch "guilt from doomscrolling → switch to scrolling something useful" converts well in ads.

- **Retention** : streaks, XP, levels, badges, and 90-style retro sound effects (per the iPhoneSoft description). iOS rating 4.56, but the bad reviews focus on "too expensive" and "content reads like AI wrote it and has errors" (App Store sg/be/ch reviews; BFM also mentions AI hallucinations).

### 5. Differentiation

- Compared with the English prototypes (Nibble, Imprint, SmartyMe): **a local version made by French people for French people (then extended to Romance-language markets)** . Topics and tone are built around the French cultural concept of "culture G" (French people feel anxiety about "culture générale" in exams and social life), and the title uses the term directly.

- Compared with older French quiz apps (Quiz Culture Générale and others): **learn first, then test, plus subscription** , not a pure quiz game with ads. The product is "knowledge TikTok with cards." It also has audio and a dyslexia-friendly font.

- Content is mass-produced with AI (iPhoneSoft says there are 20K+ cards and 20+ topics; the official site admits using AI to optimize content), which lets a small team cover 5 languages.

- **Is differentiation why it took off?** Partly. The product is a proven format, cloned. The real moat is "local language + local cultural concept + a paid-acquisition and subscription model that works." The more direct reason for this Android surge is porting plus paid ads, not anything new in the product.

### 6. How many people have seen it

- Revenue isn't public (no TrustMRR listing or founder revenue posts found). Almost no discussion on X (x-radar finds nothing).

- But it has been covered negatively by French tech outlet BFM Tech (2026-08), and copycats have already appeared: Sophia: Culture Générale (Vik Studios, launched 2026-04, 606 ratings in France, best grossing rank #54; the site sophia-culture.com's slogan "learn something new in 5 minutes a day" nearly copies GenK), plus a pile of small accounts from French indie developers such as Curioz and Fastoche! and Vulpin.

- Verdict: **it's whispering through a small circle** . French app builders have noticed it and are copying it, while the English- and Chinese-speaking worlds mostly don't know it exists.

### 7. What others can learn

- Take the subscription categories already proven in English-speaking markets (Nibble/Imprint) and redo them with **a culture concept native to each country** (France's "culture G", Spanish "cultura general"), mass-produce content with AI, and swap titles per store for ASO.

- Get paid acquisition and the paywall working on iOS first, then move to Android, carrying over the same creatives and branding directly.

- Creative angles like "TikTok for smart people" or "turn doomscrolling into long-form learning" convert well; but faking celebrity endorsements or invented awards is a red line: media will expose it and Meta will pull the ads.

### 8. Uncertain

- Ad spend, acquisition cost, and which agency runs it: not found (the metaads library doesn't track it).

- Whether the site's App of the Day / Best Brain-Training awards are real: Apple editorial stories are real, but BFM says some are fake. The claims conflict.

- "1M+ iOS downloads" is the site's own claim, unverified.

- Android retention and paying rate: Play has no ratings yet, so this can't be judged.

- Whether iPhoneSoft's reviews were paid: not verified.
