A Frenchman posts one push-up screen recording a day, three months later 70k installs: Shaply and the crowded "push-up battle"
What it is An app that uses your phone camera to automatically count push-ups. The count becomes 1v1 battles, boss fights, and ranks, sold by subscription.
Why it blew up "Camera counts push-ups + boss fights" had already been proven on short video over the summer. 9–October it was turned into a battle game, the founder posted screen recordings every day, and every so often one would go viral, bringing thousands to tens of thousands of installs each time.
CHow you could follow Don't build another push-up battle game. Copy its zero-cost playbook: waitlist pre-launch plus a daily screen recording. Apply the same camera counting to a movement or audience nobody has turned into a game yet, and do the parts Shaply does poorly: real-time PvP, accurate counting, and a paywall that's clear up front.

Shaply is a push-up app made by a French indie developer: you prop your phone on the floor, the camera counts your reps, and the count turns into damage in battles. It didn't invent the mechanic. It just rode the wave in 2026's summer. It grew because the founder posted a screen recording to his own TikTok account almost every day. Below: how it got started, how crowded the category is now, and where you could still break in.
One 420k-view recording brought 17k installs in two days
In 2026 Oct 21, the TikTok account @shaply_app posted a 10-odd-second video with a single line of text, "You can see it?!": a person doing push-ups in front of a phone, with a 1v1 battle screen showing the count and rank ticking up. The video reached 425k views. That day Shaply gained roughly 5,300 more installs on Google Play, and the next day roughly 11,500 more (Google Play install figures, averaged across the gap between two observations).
It wasn't a one-off. In Oct 4, "Skill or spam?!" got 328k views and about +3,900 that day. In Oct 25, "Who can beat him?!" got 297k views and about +6,600. On ordinary days without a hit, it gained only a few hundred installs a day.
Cumulative Play installs went from roughly 17k in Oct 1 to 72,699 by Nov 5, with +10,654 over the last 7 days (the figures for August through early October are third-party estimates). Its best ranking was #10 on the Vietnam SPORTS Top Free chart in Oct 29, and on the same day #46 in Taiwan and #58 in Thailand. By Nov 6 it had dropped to #64 in Vietnam and #90 in Thailand, and Mexico, the Philippines, Germany, and France were all below #115. It has never charted in Top Grossing.
What it is
The first line of the store listing: "Shaply turns your push-ups into a game." Prop your phone in front of you, the camera reads your form and counts reps automatically, with a "range bar" beside it, so half a push-up doesn't count. There are three parts: 60-second real-time 1v1 battles, where you gain Elo and climb six ranks from "Recruit" to "Legend"; 8 maps to clear, each ending in a boss; and guilds. The biggest update, in Nov 6 1.1.0, added 8 maps, 8 bosses, and chests and gear.
Revenue comes from in-app purchases at $3.39–$18.99, and it's a subscription. During sign-up you fill in a pile of body data first, and only after that does the paywall appear.
It didn't start out like this
The Shaply developer is credited on the App Store as NOAH ROMAIN LAURENT CHANGEON. The founder story on the official site: he trained at home for a year, couldn't find an app that judged movement quality, so he built one himself.
In late July he pre-launched on TikTok in French: "SHAPLY, a fitness + aerobics + nutrition-analysis app, coming soon to iOS," directing people to sign up for a waitlist on the website. In Aug 1, one video got 400k views; in Aug 10, two more got 270k and 200k. It went live on Play in Aug 9 and on iOS in Aug 19. The pitch then was "AI counts your movements + photo-based nutrition analysis," and the site still says 23 exercises and "training and nutrition in one app."
From September the account switched to English, with content standardized into battle recordings and gym-culture tough-guy jokes ("The goat", "Stay hard"). Sep 17 "The goat" reached 5.06M views and 270k likes, but Android installs stayed at three or four hundred a day for those days, barely converting. (Inference: the product was still a French fitness tool then, so people who downloaded after seeing the video couldn't find what they'd seen.) By October the store listing had changed to "Turn push-ups into a game," with nutrition pushed to the back. It went from a French fitness tool to a push-up battle game, and only after that pivot did the viral videos start driving installs.
Why this mechanic: someone else validated it first
"Camera counts push-ups + boss fights" had already worked on short video before Shaply's pivot:
- Push Up Arena went live on iOS in May, with the mechanic "do a push-up, hit the monster once."
- Pushup RPG (Kazakh indie developer Yerasyl Amanbek) went live on iOS in late June. In Aug 31 it issued a press release saying that about two months after launch on iOS and Android it had passed 100k installs, and a single video topped 2M views.
- In May 9, a startup-hype account on Instagram used this kind of app as a case study: "This app got 2.9M views from screen recordings alone. Go build one."
Apps like this grow well from screen recordings for a simple reason: the visual is instantly understood. A person doing push-ups, a health bar draining, a rank climbing, needs no narration and no on-camera host to explain the product. Shaply's founder posted videos like this 5 times in 142 months. The account has 5,890 followers and 453k total likes. Most videos got only ten to twenty thousand views, but every so often one went big and brought a wave of installs. The cost was close to zero.
One more factor: most installs came from the SPORTS Top Free charts in countries like Vietnam, Thailand, the Philippines, and Mexico, where a few thousand installs is enough to land in the top 100. Ratings are only 0.24% of installs, and 1-star ratings make up six in ten. That pattern suggests cheap traffic is involved: maybe paid buying, maybe TikTok pushing the videos into Southeast Asia. There's no direct evidence either way (inference).
Users don't stick: 2.4 rating
Play has 175 ratings, averaging 2.4. 1-star ratings number 105, 4-star and 5-star ratings are 35 each, and there are no 2 or 3-star ratings (11-04). The iOS US store has 7 ratings, averaging 1.6. Similar products sit at 4.5–5.0.
The reviews raise three complaints. One user gave 4 stars: "1v1 counting is inaccurate. I did 10 fast, clean reps and it only counted 4 or 5." Another said "1v1 is all bots, I haven't met a single real player." A third (10-19) wrote: "You make you create an account and fill in a bunch of data before the subscription pops up. I get that you need to charge, but say so up front, or make it clear in your Instagram videos."
The videos brought people in; the product didn't hold them.
Who's competing: the category is already crowded
| Product | Launched | Scale (Google Play, early November) | Versus Shaply |
|---|---|---|---|
| Pushup RPG: Fitness Quest | iOS 6-25 / Play 7-31 | 172k installs, 4.8 rating (2,415 reviews) | The leader of the same mechanic, earlier and with much better reputation |
| Push Up Boss: Multiplayer Game | 6-05 | 65k installs | Free, no account, 16 bosses + ranked play |
| RepChamp: Fitness Duel | 8-27 | 46k installs, +22k in 7 days, 4.5 rating | Also pushes PvP, growing faster than Shaply |
| Pushup Legends: Duel Arena | 9-29 | 40k installs, 7 days +26k | A copycat from screen-recording giant AZ Screen Recorder, growing fastest |
| Push Up Duel, PUPG, Repborne, Pushup Club, and others | 2026 years | All small | 1v1, ranks, boss fights, almost identical |
| Push Up Time: AI App Blocker, and others | From ¥2025-11 | 530k installs | Adjacent category: you have to do push-ups to unlock your phone, same camera counting |
After Pushup RPG's press release in late August, a batch of copycats launched in 9 and October, including some big developers. Shaply is one of the copycats that has done reasonably well, but its growth over the last 7 days (+10.7k) now trails two rivals that launched later.
What you can learn is the playbook, not the category
What Shaply really offers is a cold-start playbook a single person can run:
- Before launch, build a waitlist with short videos in your native language (its three French videos from 7–August each got 20–400k views, seeding the first batch of users).
- After launch, post one 10–30-second app recording a day, with jokes the niche already knows, no narration, no face on camera. Most posts make no splash, but one going viral every so often is enough.
- What's in the video has to match what people see after download. The September video with 5.06M views brought no installs. After the October pivot, a video with 300k views could bring thousands.
If it were you
C. The "sport as game + daily screen recordings" playbook is worth copying, but the "push-up battle" category isn't worth following right now.
Verdict: the mechanic was validated in May, made public by a press release in August, and 9–October saw a flood of copycats plus a screen-recording giant entering. Shaply is itself a copycat, its growth comes in waves, its rank is falling, and its rating is 2.4. Build another push-up 1v1 and you're the tenth or fifteenth.
Who it suits: a 1-person team that can do pose recognition and is willing to post short videos every day, or anyone who has another "instantly understandable screen recording" topic and wants to borrow this cold-start playbook.
Who it doesn't suit: anyone trying to make "yet another push-up battle game"; anyone unwilling to post videos themselves and hoping the store alone will bring organic traffic; anyone who wants to monetize through the paywall first (half the negative reviews in this category come from the paywall and bot opponents).
How to do it: don't copy push-ups. Take the same camera counting and apply it to a movement or audience nobody has turned into a game yet: squats, planks, jump rope, or home training for older adults, or fitness-test prep for students. Or focus on what Shaply does poorly: real-time PvP (even if only at fixed evening hours), accurate counting, and a paywall that explains itself up front.
How to get users: Follow Shaply's playbook. Post a screen recording on your own TikTok every day, with a person moving and the on-screen numbers ticking up in the first second. Before launch, build a waitlist with native-language videos. The Southeast Asia and LatAm category charts have low bars, and a few thousand installs can put you in the top 100, which makes them useful early exposure.
When to launch: Novelty fades fast on short video for this kind of content, so ship the new-action or new-audience version before the 2027 January fitness season (New Year's resolutions). That's the best window of the year.
Signs you're reading it wrong: ① After 1.1.0, Shaply's rating climbs back above 4 and its 7-day growth goes back over 20k. That would mean late entrants can still catch up on product quality and the category isn't saturated. ② A new push-up battle app launches after December and passes 100k installs within a month. That would mean demand is far from used up. ③ The reverse: if RepChamp and Pushup Legends both see their 7-day growth halve before year-end, the whole trend is fading, and even the new-action version needs more caution.

Shaply (com.nonoia.shaply): why it worked
Research date 2026-11-06. Data sources: googleplay library (app_snap / app_day_ext / chart_rank, collected daily since 2026-10-29; history before launch is AppstoreSpy estimates), appstore library, iTunes lookup, TikHub (TikTok), Jina search and page text, x-radar.
One line
Shaply is a bodyweight training app by a French indie developer (App Store seller name NOAH ROMAIN LAURENT CHANGEON). It uses the front camera to detect pose and automatically counts push-ups and other moves, and turns training into a game: live 1v1 battles, Elo ranks, 8 maps of monsters to fight, and guilds. It also estimates calories from photos. It did not invent this mechanic. It was one of the followers in the summer 2026 wave of "camera-counted push-ups + monster fights/battles." Growth came almost entirely from the official TikTok account posting app recordings every day, with an occasional viral video bringing a burst of installs.
Growth data
- Cumulative Play installs: 3,497 (8-30, AppstoreSpy estimate) → 17,286 (10-01) → 30,295 (10-20) → 59,017 (10-25) → 72,699 (11-05). Last 7 days: +10,654 (googleplay library, app_profile).
- Growth comes in bursts: normally a few hundred installs a day; 10-04 single day about +3,868; 10-21 and 10-22 two days about +5,300 and +11,500; 10-25 about +6,600 (app_day_ext, spread across the gap between two observations). After 10-29 it falls back to roughly 1,000–2,000 a day.
- Charts: only the SPORTS free category chart. Its best showing was #10 in Vietnam (10-29) on the same day it hit #46 in Taiwan and #58 in Thailand. It then slid steadily: 11-06 it was #64 in Vietnam and #90 in Thailand, and Mexico, the Philippines, Germany, France, Argentina, Indonesia and South Korea all sat at #115–188 (chart_rank). It never made the Top Grossing chart.
- Ratings are poor: 175 Play ratings, average 2.4, distribution 1 105 1-star, 4 35 2-star, 5 35 3-star, with no 2 or 3 5-star (app_snap 11-04). iOS French store: 15 ratings, average 3.1. US store: 7 ratings, average 1.6 (iTunes lookup 11-06).
- Monetization: in-app purchases, priced $3.39–$18.99. One Play review complains that a pile of profile questions comes before the subscription prompt, which the Instagram videos don't mention. So it uses a subscription model with the paywall shown after the onboarding flow.
- Version: 1.0.3 → 1.1.0 (11-06). The official Instagram also promoted it as the "biggest update yet: 8 maps, 8 bosses, chests and gear."
Timeline (the positioning changed once)
- Since 2026-07-26, TikTok @shaply_app has been teasing SHAPLY in French: "a fitness + aerobics + meal-analysis app, coming soon to iOS, sign up for the waitlist at shaply.app." 8-01 One post has 400k views; 8-10 two others have 270k and 200k views.
- 08-09 launched on Play (the first day it shows in the library), 08-19 launched on iOS (iTunes releaseDate). The site's pitch then was "AI counts your reps + range-of-motion bar + calorie count from photos," plus XP and ranks. The founder said: "I trained at home for a year, couldn't find an app that checks movement quality, so I built one" (shaply.app/en).
- From September, TikTok switched to English, with content standardized into "battle / rank recordings + Goggins-style copy" (The goat, Stay hard, Who can beat him?!). One video got 09-17 5.06M views and 270k likes.
- October to November: the store listing was rewritten to "Shaply turns push-ups into a game," leading with 1v1 live battles, Elo across 6 ranks, 8 maps of monsters to fight, and guilds. 11-06 shipped a 1.1.0 major update. The original nutrition feature and the 23 exercise types moved to the back. In short, it went from "French fitness tool" to "push-up battle game," riding the category that was blowing up at the same time.
Competitors (doing the same thing)
| Product | Platform | Launched | Scale | How Shaply differs |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Pushup RPG: Fitness Quest (indie developer Yerasyl Amanbek, Kazakhstan) | iOS + Android | iOS 2026-06-25 / Play 2026-07-31 | Play 172k installs, +7k in 11 days, rating 4.8 (2,415 ratings). The press release says it passed 100k installs across iOS and Android about two months after launch, and one video topped 2M views (EINPresswire / Tennessean, 2026-08-31). | The category leader, with nearly identical mechanics (camera-counted push-ups, 48 monsters to fight, live battles). It came before Shaply and has much better reviews. |
| Push Up Arena / Fit Arena(Airix LLC) | iOS | 2026-05-14 | Charted in several small iOS countries; Israel has 118 ratings. | An earlier "one push-up, one monster hit" concept, with media-style coverage on Instagram. |
| Push Up Boss: Multiplayer Game(Ipirio) | iOS + Android | 2026-06-05 | Play 65k installs | Free, no account needed, 16 bosses + ranked battles + mini-games. |
| RepChamp: Fitness Duel(GR9 Studio) | Android | 2026-08-27 | Play 46k installs, +7k in 22 days, 9,248 ratings, 4.5 stars. | Battle-focused, growing faster than Shaply, with an unusually high number of ratings (possibly prompted for). |
| Pushup Legends: Duel Arena(AZ Screen Recorder) | Android | 2026-09-29 | Play 40k installs, +7k in 26 days, 5.0 stars. | A copycat from a large developer (a screen-recording tools company). It grew the fastest. |
| Push Up Duel (ysamihal), PUPG, Repborne (10-15 launched, 806 installs), Pushup Social, Pushup Club | iOS / Android | 2026 years | All small | Same-looking: 1v1, ranks, boss fights |
| Push Up Time: AI App Blocker and ScrollFit, PushUpLock, and others | iOS + Android | From ¥2025-11 | Push Up Time has 530k installs on Play | Adjacent category: you have to do push-ups to unlock your phone, using the same camera counting |
| Older push-up counters and 100 Push-Ups apps | iOS / Android | 2011–2023 | Idle Push Up has 7,458 ratings on the US store | Counting only, or planned training, with no game layer |
Takeaway: this category is already crowded. After Pushup RPG announced 100k installs in its press release (8-31), a wave of copycats launched from 9 to October. A BlenderHub startup-pitch post on Instagram (2026-05-09: "this app got 2.9M views from screen recordings alone, go build it") shows the mechanic was already being passed around as a "copy this viral formula" play. That post came three months before Shaply launched, and it was about a different app, not Shaply.
Where users come from
- Own TikTok account posts an app recording every day (confirmed, main channel). @shaply_app has 5,890 followers, 453k total likes and 142 videos. Its bio: "the first French app that counts your moves 🇫🇷." Almost every day it posts a 10–30 second battle or rank recording, most getting 1–30k views, and occasionally one blows up:
- "Skill or spam?!" 10-04 328k views → ~+3,868 installs that day
- 10-15"In which level i am?!"274k → 10-14, 10-15 a day, roughly +1,600
- 10-21 "You can see it?!" 425k → 10-21 about +5,300, 10-22 about +11,500
- 10-25"Who can beat him?!"297k → about +6,600 on the day
- 10-29「A legend」667k → after that only about 1,000 a day (weak conversion)
- 09-17「The goat」5.06M views → on Android those days only 300–450 installs a day, almost no Android users came in (back then it was a French fitness tool, and the audience was probably mostly on iOS / in the US)
Installs jumped a few times in October, timed to match the viral videos. But views and installs don't scale together, so paid acquisition can't be ruled out (see item 4 below).
- Pre-launch French waitlist (confirmed): from late July to mid August, French videos sent people to shaply.app to sign up. Three of them got 20–400k views, building the first batch of users before launch.
- Instagram (account confirmed, size unknown): @shaply_app posts update announcements. The data card says an Instagram video asking "can you beat this boss" has 6000+ comments, not verified. The 2.9M-view viral post that came up in search is BlenderHub talking about a different app.
- Paid acquisition (speculation, unverified): the main charts are in cheap-ad markets like Vietnam, Thailand, the Philippines, Mexico and Indonesia; ratings are only 0.24% of installs, and 1-star ratings are 60%. This looks like cheap traffic, or TikTok recommendations pushing the videos into Southeast Asia. Ad libraries don't track it, so not finding it there doesn't mean there was no spend.
- X, Reddit, HN, media: none found (x-radar: 0 posts in 120 days). No public revenue disclosed.
Why it took off
- Riding the category wave: from 2026 to 5–August, "camera-counted push-ups + RPG monster battles" was already proven to go viral on short video (Push Up Arena and Pushup RPG press releases cite 100K installs and 2M views, and BlenderHub uses it as a startup case study). Shaply pivoted to a battle-game positioning from 9–October, catching this demand wave.
- Founder films screen recordings himself and posts constantly: 142 posts over 5 months, using fitness-community memes like "Goggins / Stay hard" with battle footage. Each viral hit brought a wave of installs at almost no cost.
- The screen recordings are the ad: the battle footage is instantly readable (a person doing push-ups while the rank on screen goes up), which is why this kind of app can build traction from recordings alone.
- Spread across many countries: installs came mainly from category charts in Southeast Asia and Latin America, where the SPORTS free chart is easy to enter; a few thousand installs was enough to reach the top 100.
Differentiation
- Its own claimed differentiators are three things: ① a motion-range check, so half a push-up doesn't count; ② fitness and food photo logging in one app; ③ "the first French push-up counting app" (TikTok bio).
- In reality: motion-range checks, battles, monsters and ranks are all covered by Pushup RPG, Push Up Boss and RepChamp; nutrition tracking is no longer a focus on its store listing. What actually made it work was not differentiation, but following a format that had already been validated, plus being able to keep posting short videos. French was a small edge at the start; after September it went fully English and global.
- On the other hand, the product experience is worse than competitors': rating 2.4, while competitors sit at 4.5–5.0. Reviews complain that battles are all bots, counting is inaccurate, and subscription prompts only appear after sign-up. It gets installs, but doesn't keep people.
Takeaways
- "Pre-launch French waitlist + daily screen recordings after launch" is a zero-cost cold start that one person can copy. Videos in this category don't need a real person on camera; battle recordings with meme captions are enough.
- Take a mechanic that has already gone viral on short video (here, "exercise as a game") and redo it with a different language or movement (squats, pull-ups, planks).
- Lesson: make the paywall clear in the videos and onboarding up front, or people will install and then get dragged down by bad reviews.
Uncertain
- Was there paid acquisition: the Southeast Asia-heavy, low-rating-share pattern looks like paid traffic, but there is no direct evidence.
- Revenue: in-app purchases priced at $3.39–$18.99; never charted on the Top Grossing list; payment data for iOS and Play is unclear.
- Actual Instagram views and comment counts weren't obtained (login required).
- Why the 09-17 video with 5.06M views barely converted to Android (maybe the audience was on iOS, or the paywall scared people off at the time).
