# "Can I plug in when I get there?": a Thailand EV charger map that needs no sign-up, Android version hit 29k installs in two months

**What it is** A charging-station map for electric cars in Thailand: it puts stations from every operator on one map, showing at a glance which plugs are free, the price, and the power output, then sends you to the operator's own app to pay.

**Why it took off** Thailand's charging network is very fragmented, so drivers have to open several apps to find a station. It spent two and a half years building a reputation on iOS, and when the native Android version shipped in late August, Android drivers who had been waiting in owner groups poured in.

**B** **How you could follow it** Don't compete with it in Thailand. Take the same "look-up-only, live-across-operators" map to markets with similarly fragmented charging networks, like Vietnam, Indonesia and Malaysia. Get live data from a few leading operators first, and cold-start through owner groups and car dealers.

Grade B: demand is strong and acquisition is cheap, and there are open slots in other countries, but the bar is live data integration, and this format hasn't made money even for PugEV itself. Whispers in niche circles

Data (updated daily) · first launch 2026-08-28 · 11-07 installs 29,168

Android · Total installs worldwide

Data 2026-10-29 → 2026-11-07 (10 days, 10 observations). Google's detail page only refreshes install counts every other day, so a flat day doesn't mean nobody installed.

Thailand has more than thirty charging operators, each with its own app that only shows its own chargers, and many require a Thai ID to sign up. PugEV puts 7,200 stations from these operators on one map: free or not, price per kWh and power output, visible as soon as you open it. Free, no ads, no login. It was already on iOS for two and a half years, and only got an Android version in late August; it hit 29k installs in two months. Below: why it took off, where users came from, where the money is, and whether the format can work in other countries.

### Oct 26, "zero ad spend"

In 2026 Oct 26, PugEV member Soranut Ratanavaraha posted on LinkedIn: "PugEV hit #1 on the App Store. 100% organic, zero ad spend." (Inferred: this refers to the Thailand Navigation category chart, where it ranked #2 on 10-28 that day.)

That same week, Android installs accelerated. 10-21 cumulative was under 10k, 10-27 was 16k, and 10-31 was 26k, with four days in the middle averaging 2,400 extra installs a day (Google Play install counts). On the Play Thailand Maps & Navigation free chart, it reached #6 on 10-29.

### What it is

One map. Pins directly show how many plugs are free at a station and the max power; the station page shows prices, a "confirmed working" tag, and when someone last charged there; it has along-the-route station search and can log your charging costs. The official site sums up the product in one line: "Can I plug in when I get there?"

It doesn't charge cars or take payment. The station page has a button that sends you to that operator's own app to pay. PugEV only handles the "check first" step.

### Why people install it: switching between several apps

The opening of a Pantip comparison post reviewing 5 station-finder apps reads: "The planning tools of the main charging operators are all bad, and they don't show other operators' chargers, so we have to open several apps and check plug status ourselves." After going through PlugShare, Charge Loma, Saifah, PugEV and Chargenie, the verdict was: "If you want live status, pick PugEV; if you want route planning, pick Chargenie."

Demand keeps growing. Cumulative battery-EV registrations in Thailand reached about 515k by July 2026 year, with about 21k new registrations in July alone, double the same month last year (mreport). Owners of Chinese brands like Geely EX2, Jaecoo 5 and BYD mostly use Android phones (inferred), and every month a new batch of owners asks in FB groups "which apps are must-installs".

### Why now: Android users who had been waiting for two and a half years

PugEV isn't a new product. The iOS version launched in March 2024, built by an individual developer who is a senior software engineer at SCB bank in Thailand. By 11-06, the iOS version had 8,368 ratings in Thailand, a 4.87 average, and ranked between #2 and #7 in the Navigation category (Thailand App Store).

Android users could only use the web version. Someone in an owners' FB group posted a tutorial telling people to open pugev.com in Chrome and "Add to Home Screen". Even the Pantip comparison said "iOS only for now". In August the team teased "Android coming in September" on LinkedIn, and the native version went live on Play in Aug 28. A post on the FB page, "PugEV's new Android version is here", got 553 likes and 75 comments; 10-21 the team posted on Instagram "one month since Android launch, over 10k downloads".

So this growth was mainly "Android is finally here": two and a half years of accumulated name and reputation, released all at once on a second platform. I didn't find solid evidence of which post or group caused the jump in late October. It was probably several things stacking up: a viral post with over 10k, a 100 baht coupon with charging operator iGreen+ (10-15), and the long weekend travel from Oct 23. From November it fell back to 250–300 installs a day, and its Play category rank slipped to #31 (11-06).

| Date | Play cumulative installs | What happened |
|---|---|---|
| 08-28 | — | Android version launched |
| 10-01 | About 5,000 | A few hundred installs a day at most |
| 10-21 | 9,838 | Instagram: "over 10k in one month" |
| 10-27 | 16,221 | About 1,500 a day |
| 10-31 | 25,918 | +9,700 in four days, peak |
| 11-06 | 29,168 | Dropped back to about 300 per day |

Source: Google Play install counts; before Oct 29 they are third-party estimates. The official site claims "100k+ downloads, 70k+ monthly active users", while the August LinkedIn post says "300k+ downloads". The two figures don't match, unverified.

### Where users came from: owner groups, not ads

- **EV owner FB groups and Pantip** : "must-install app" posts and Android install tutorials in groups like BYD Thailand owners and various EV owner groups; in the expat Thailand Expat Car Club, someone praised it for working without a Thai ID. The recommendation posts and comparisons on Pantip had a writing style in the early days that sounded like it was written by the team or friends, mixing seeding with genuine word-of-mouth (inferred).

- **Car dealers and head-unit modifiers** : a Zeekr salesperson shot TikTok tutorials on using it and sent them to customers; a service provider that unlocks head units for Geely EX2 recommended installing it on the head unit; both only got a few thousand views, a small amount.

- **The car-media must-install list** : the Thailand EV site ev.iphonemod.net ranked it first for the 2024 year-end holiday push.

- **Operators driving traffic themselves** : iGreen+ posted 100 baht offers inside PugEV; fast-charging operator UltraFast said on TikTok "forgot to scan? you can check in with PugEV within 1 km" (11-05). The official site lists an OCPI 2.2.1 integration spec stating PugEV receives data pushed by operators. Operators are already giving it data proactively.

- **Paid acquisition** : nothing found in the Meta ad library. The app itself doesn't make money, and combined with the "zero ad spend" claim, it's basically safe to conclude there was no paid acquisition.

### Where the money comes from: nothing yet

The app has no in-app purchases and no ads. The official FAQ says "all free, no membership." The official site and Instagram have mentioned future directions: promoting new stations for operators, running promotions, and steering traffic to stations during off-peak hours. These sound like ways to charge operators, but no revenue has been seen so far and no public numbers exist.

### Who it's competing with

| Product | Scale | How it differs from PugEV |
|---|---|---|
| EV Station PluZ(PTT) | Play 414k installs | The official app of the largest operator. You can charge and pay, but it only shows that operator's own stations. |
| EleXA, PEA VOLTA, MEA EV, EA Anywhere, and others | Play: tens of thousands to 300K | Each operator's own app, many requiring a Thai ID |
| OneCharge | Play 76K; iOS Thai store 9,047 rating | One account covers charging and payment across several networks. PugEV only checks availability; it doesn't handle payment. |
| Saifah(สายฟ้า) | Play 74K; iOS Thai store 1,430 rating | The closest rival: it also claims 7,000+ stations and live status, and adds AI trip planning and community. It launched a year before PugEV, but its iOS rating count is one-sixth of PugEV's, and it gained 0 ratings in 7 days. |
| PlugShare | iOS Thai store 15K ratings | A global crowdsourced map. Thai data relies on user reports and can't be filtered by brand. |
| Google Maps | — | Only some operators have live status, and you can't check individual plugs. |

Sources: Google Play, App Store Thai storefront, 11-06.

A batch of web-based versions appeared around 2026 years ago, including ปลั๊กป้า plugpa.com, LiveChargeMap, and ONE EV Station. Their slogans are nearly identical (all networks, real-time, no sign-up), and none gained traction.

Saifah has more features and launched earlier, but it lost to PugEV. Users just want to see at a glance which charger is available, and few care about feature count.

### If it were you

**B.** Competing head-on with it in Thailand makes no sense, since it's already the default pick in owner groups. What's worth looking at is taking the "cross-network live map that only checks, doesn't pay" model to another country with equally fragmented charging networks. The opportunity is there, but there are two weak spots: live data is hard to get, and this format has not yet proven it can make money.

**Who it suits** : developers aged 1–2 in markets like Vietnam, Indonesia, Malaysia, or the Philippines, who are native speakers of the local language, drive EVs or are part of owner communities, and ideally have a route to operators (those with experience in connected cars, payments, or energy have an edge). A Malaysian EV creator on TikTok says there's no single app covering all chargers. The status in each country hasn't been checked one by one, so before starting, check whether a local aggregator other than PlugShare already exists.

**Who it doesn't suit** : anyone expecting revenue within three months; anyone who can't get live data and can only build a static station list (that's the plugpa.com crowd, and nobody uses it); anyone wanting to build for the UK or US (Google Maps, PlugShare, and roaming apps already cover those).

**How to build it** : a map that works the moment you open it, with no sign-up wall and no ads. Pins show the number of free plugs and power directly, and station pages say when someone last charged there. Payment goes to the operator's app via deep links. Start by getting data for a few leading operators from open APIs and public pages, then use your user numbers to trade for direct OCPI integration with operators. It's unclear whether PugEV's early data was licensed or scraped, but it now has operators pushing data to it, which is where you want to end up.

**How to acquire users** : don't buy ads. Join owner Facebook groups, local forums, and brand owner groups, and post comparison threads ("several apps compared"). Reach out to car dealers and in-car tech installers so they recommend the app to new owners. Once word of mouth puts it in the top few of the category chart, open a second platform and post in the groups: "Finally, an Android version."

**When to move** : no rush, but the sooner the better. Growth in Southeast Asian EVs comes mainly from Chinese brands. Once someone becomes the default recommendation in a country's owner groups, latecomers struggle to break in. Set a deadline for the first half of 2027, and pick one country to ship in first.

**What would signal you're wrong** : ① In your chosen country, the largest one or two operators refuse to provide live data and block scraping, so within six months you can only get a static list. ② Google Maps starts showing live status for all major operators' plugs locally. ③ PugEV expands into your target country. ④ A year from now PugEV still has zero revenue and has signed no operator partnerships, suggesting this format can only work as a personal project in a market the size of Thailand, not sustain a team.

## Why PugEV (com.noodlesoftwaredevelopment.pugev) took off

> Research date 2026-11-06. Data sources: Google Play library (collected daily from 2026-10-29, app_day_ext estimated by AppstoreSpy), App Store library (Thai storefront), iTunes lookup, pugev.com, LinkedIn, Instagram, Pantip, TikTok (TikHub), Exa / Jina search.

### One line

An aggregated EV charging map for Thailand. It shows 30 charging operators and 7,200+ stations on one map, with real-time availability for each plug, pricing, and power output. It also offers busy-hour forecasts for arrival times, route-based station finding, and charging logs. Free, no sign-up, no ads.

### Verdict

The "new" Android app on the data card isn't actually new. It's an **iOS product that has been running for two and a half years, with the native Android version only arriving at the end of 2026-08** . The iOS version launched on 2024-03-19, built by individual developer Nuttapol Roupipatpong (senior software engineer at SCB). The iOS version has accumulated 8,368 ratings averaging 4.87 stars, and ranked #2-7 on the Thai store's Navigation category chart (App Store library, 10-28 to 11-06). Android growth has mainly come from these factors:

1. **Backlogged Android demand released all at once** : before the native version, Android users could only use the web version/PWA. Facebook groups still had people posting tutorials on opening pugev.com in Chrome and adding it to the home screen. The team teased "Android launching September" in an August LinkedIn post.

2. **Word of mouth in Thailand's EV owner communities** : the BYD owner group, various EV owner Facebook groups, Pantip, car salespeople (Zeekr sales staff sending tutorials to customers), head-unit modification shops (Geely EX2 unlocking), and car media and EV sites' "must-install app" lists all recommend it.

3. **The product addresses a real pain point** : Thailand's charging network is highly fragmented, with each operator having its own app, many requiring a Thai ID to register. Official apps only show their own stations. PugEV does the best job of "cross-network + live plug status + no sign-up."

4. **Timing** : Thailand's battery EV fleet has reached about 2026-07 cumulative, roughly 515K vehicles, and new registrations in July alone were about 21K, doubling year over year. Owners of Chinese brands like Geely EX2, Jaecoo 5, and BYD mostly use Android phones, and new owners keep joining every month.

The cause of the late-October surge (daily installs jumping from around 200 to 1,500-2,400) isn't fully confirmed. It may have been several things at once: the "new Android version" post around 10-21 and the "Android passes 10K in 1 months" post, the iGreen+ charging promotion partnership, and the long weekend travel starting 10-23. From November it dropped back to about 250-300 per day, and its Play category rank slid from #6 to #31.

- iOS (id 6477750987): Thai store Navigation category chart #10-28 #2,11-06 #7; rating count 7,719 → 8,368,10 days +649, about 40-120 per day (App Store library). The iOS rating pace (7 days +483) is the highest of all EV apps in the Thai store: OneCharge +388, ReverSharger +376, PlugShare +57, Saifah 0.

- Self-reported numbers: the official site says "100k+ downloads, 70k+ monthly active, rating 4.9". 2026-08-19's team LinkedIn post says "300,000+ downloads", which doesn't match the official figures. Unverified.

- Revenue: the app has no in-app purchases and no ads (Play snapshot: ad_supported=False, offers_iap=False). The official FAQ says it's "completely free, no membership".

### Competitors

Thailand has several kinds of similar apps:

| Name | Where | Launched | Scale | How it differs from PugEV |
|---|---|---|---|---|

| PEA VOLTA / MEA EV / EA Anywhere / EVolt / Altervim / SPARK / CHARGE+ | Android/iOS | 2018-2026 | Play: tens of thousands to 160k | Each carrier's own app. You can charge and pay, but it only shows its own stations. |
| OneCharge | Android/iOS | iOS 2022 / Play 2025-01 | Play 76k; iOS 9,047 rating, 7 days +388 | Roaming charging app: one account works across multiple networks for charging and payment, no Thai ID needed. PugEV can't process payments. |
| Saifah(สายฟ้า) | Android (TWA wrapper) / iOS / web | 2023-05 | Play 74k; iOS 1,430 rating, 7 days 0 | The most direct rival: it also claims 7,000+ stations, 37 networks and real-time status, but leans toward AI trip planning. It launched a year earlier, yet its iOS rating is only 1/6 of PugEV's. |
| PlugShare | Global | 2011 | iOS Thai store 15,001 rating | Global crowdsourced map. Thailand data comes from user reports and can't be filtered by brand. |

| Charge Loma / Chargenie | iOS/Android | Unknown | Small | A niche planning app that Pantip reviews use for comparison, covering few brands. |
| EVAT evsemap (Thai EV Association) | Web | Unknown | 4,687 stations, 21 networks | An web map run by the association, with no app experience. |
| Google Maps EV charging | Big-company features | Shows charging stations in Thailand from 2022-10 | — | Real-time status for only some carriers, and can't be viewed per plug. |
| Copycat web tools: ปลั๊กป้า plugpa.com, LiveChargeMap, ONE EV Station, EV Map (mfinitydev), ikaedesu EV Route Planner, Thai Auto Hub | Web | Around 2026 | Small | Also pitch "all networks, real-time, no sign-up", mostly as web or AI-chat style tools. None has reached scale. |

### Where users come from (growth levers)

1. **EV owner Facebook groups and Pantip word of mouth (confirmed)** : the BYD Thailand group, EV owner groups 2389905174463399 (with posts like "must-have app" and "how to install on Android"), and Thailand Expat Car Club (foreigners praising that it works without a Thai ID). Pantip has two threads: 42975765 is a recommendation post, and 42971336 is a横评 of 5 apps concluding "for real-time, pick PugEV". Both read like official or friends-written promo (an early version said "currently iOS only"), so it's a mix of seeding and genuine word of mouth.

2. **Official social accounts (confirmed)** : the Facebook page @pugev.official's "Android new version is here" post has 553 likes and 75 comments. Instagram posts milestones (10-21"Android 1 months, passed 10k") and feature updates. There's an official LINE account, and a LinkedIn founder post (Soranut Ratanavaraha: "We got tired of checking three apps to find a working charger").

3. **Car sales and head-unit service providers (confirmed, small volume)** : TikTok @zeekrsales made a tutorial and sends it to customers (2025-04). @it.ev.unlockservice recommends installing it on the Geely EX2 head unit and says the team plans CarPlay support (2026-09, about 6,000 plays). A Changan Lumin owner posted a road test (10-29). TikTok volume overall is small and not a main channel.

4. **Car media and EV sites' "must-have apps" lists (confirmed)** : ev.iphonemod.net's year-end long-holiday recommendations put PugEV first in 2024. An EV account on Instagram recommends it alongside Saifah, PlugShare and PluZ.

5. **Partnerships and carrier referrals (partly confirmed)** : an iGreen+ partnership gives 100 baht charging discounts inside PugEV (Instagram 10-15). Carrier UltraFast said on TikTok, "if you forgot to scan, you can check in with PugEV within 1 km" (11-05). The website lists OCPI 2.2.1 integration (PugEV as an eMSP receiver), showing carriers are actively pushing data to it.

6. **iOS legacy user migration and store search (inferred)** : Play referrer parameters include utm_term=pugev and brand queries like "pugev แอป ชาร์จรถไฟฟ้า", suggesting many people heard the name and went straight to search for it.

7. **Paid acquisition** : Meta's ad library shows no advertiser for it. (The library only tracks certain terms, so no result doesn't mean no ads.) The app has no monetization, so large-scale paid acquisition is unlikely.

### Why it took off

- **Strong pain point** : Thailand has one app per carrier, and they don't show each other's stations. Many require a Thai ID to sign up, and official apps are generally slow. The original Pantip post says the official apps don't show across networks, so you have to open several apps to check plugs one by one.

- **Subtracting features from the UX** : opening the app gives you the map straight away, with no sign-up and no ad pop-ups. Map pins show available plugs and max power directly. Station pages mark "confirmed available" and "last time someone charged here", which answers "can I plug in when I arrive?"

- **Real-time data is actually connected** : 7,200+ stations, 30+ carriers, real-time status per plug, plus an OCPI interface. Most web copycats only have static POIs or cover a few networks.

- **Brand and word of mouth built over two and a half years on iOS** : 8,000+ ratings, a score of 4.9, and top-few in the category chart. When the Android version came out, the community shared "finally Android", catching pent-up demand.

- **Fast growth in EV ownership** : cumulative BEVs are about 515k, adding roughly 20k a month (mreport, 2026-07). New owners look for a "must-have app" every month.

### Differentiation

Compared with carrier official apps: it works across all networks, but can't charge or pay. It positions itself as the "check first, then jump to the carrier's app to pay" entry layer, with buttons on station pages that open that carrier's app directly.

Compared with aggregators like Saifah and PlugShare: it narrows its features to a single job, "real-time plug availability", doing it fastest and most accurately, with no sign-up. It skips heavier features like community and reviews. Pantip's comparison sums it up: "for real-time pick PugEV, for planning pick the others".

This differentiation is why it took off: Saifah has more features and launched earlier, but its iOS rating is only 1/6,7 and its new ratings in 0 days are fewer. Users stayed for "seeing at a glance which charger works". The Android wave mainly rides the reputation built on iOS, not anything new in the Android version itself.

### Visibility

Still spreading in small circles. It's well known among Thailand's EV owners, but no English media or X accounts have written about it (x-radar: 90 posts in the last 0 days). Revenue isn't public, and there's nothing to disclose. The team calls itself a "small team" (the LinkedIn company page lists 1 people). Others are already copying the format, but at very small scale.

### What to borrow

- Build a "cross-network real-time status aggregation layer" for fragmented, small-language markets where charging, parking, refueling and battery swapping are split across carriers. Don't touch payments. Just do the "check first" step, and deep-link into the carrier's app. The barrier is real-time data integration (OCPI / per-carrier APIs / scraping). Once it works, it can flip into a distribution channel where carriers push data to you. Vietnam, Indonesia, Malaysia and the Philippines have similar fragmentation (on TikTok, a Malaysian EV account says "Malaysia still has no single app covering all chargers").

- On iOS first, use one platform to build word of mouth and ratings into the top few of the category chart. Then launch Android and create a second wave of buzz in the community with "finally Android".

- Cold-start through car owner communities: Facebook owner groups, Pantip, dealership salespeople and head-unit installers, rather than paid acquisition.

### Unknowns

- No hard evidence from post dates for the direct trigger of the 10-21 to 10-31 acceleration (Facebook post spread, a long weekend, a particular owner group or car media, partnership referrals).

- Self-reported downloads of 100k+ (official site) and 300,000+ (LinkedIn 2026-08) don't match.

- Business model: possibly site promotion (the official site and Instagram mention "promoting new stations for station owners, running promotions, and driving traffic in off-peak hours"), carrier partnerships, and coupon revenue share. None of it is public.

- Unverified whether real-time data comes from official authorization or scraping, whether it's compliant, and whether it can continue.

- Bluweo lists it as "built with Claude", credited to Thawatchai Ninpet (unverified). The team makeup is unclear.
