PDF Reader & PDF Editor (NovaMobi Studio) · NovaMobi Studio

One line, "your PDF reader version is outdated," pushed a Vietnamese side account to 740k installs

What it is An Android PDF reader published by a Vietnamese individual developer account. It reads, annotates, scans and converts, and makes money from ads and in-app purchases.

Why it took off Fake system alerts such as "your PDF reader version is outdated, you may lose data if you don't update" were bought on Google ad slots like YouTube, scaring people into clicking and installing. The same codebase runs under more than twenty accounts, buying traffic in rotation, and this is one of them.

DHow you could follow this Don't build the twentieth-something reskinned PDF reader. What you can borrow is the playbook: test new apps with small budgets in low-barrier tools charts like South Korea and Indonesia, and run a group of similar anxiety-driven utilities under one account. If you really want the PDF category, build what they don't: no ads, one-time purchase, real editing.

D grade: the traction comes entirely from scare-style ad creatives and multi-account matrix ad budgets, with nothing in the product worth copying. Twenty-plus accounts on the same template, a category dominated by Adobe and established ad matrices, creatives that violate Google ad policy, and high ban risk make it a bad bet for indie developers. Almost nobody knows it

PDF Reader & PDF Editor was published on Android in Aug 20 and had 740k installs by Nov 6. Its features are no different from the hundreds of other PDF readers on Play. It grew because of an ad that looks like a system alert, plus a template copied in bulk across more than twenty developer accounts. This piece covers how the ad tricks people into clicking, how the matrix operates, how crowded the PDF category has become, and what indie developers can take from it and what to avoid.

A "warning" that pops up after you skip an ad

In 2026 August, someone posted two screenshots to Reddit's r/Adblock. They came from the YouTube app on a Pixel phone: the user had already tapped "skip ad," and then a box appeared below the video:

Warning. You are currently using an older version of the PDF reader. If you do not update, you may lose your data.

Below it was an "Update" button. The box was styled like a phone system notification, and you had to scroll to see the "Sponsored" label. The phone's owner thought the phone had been hacked, and told the poster: "My phone keeps popping up messages saying my photos aren't safe, hurry and..."

The screenshots didn't show the app's name. But more than a month later, on Oct 3, a user named Dirk Walter left a review on the store page of NovaMobi Studio's PDF Reader & PDF Editor, and as of Nov 6 it was still at the top:

"You are currently using an older version of the PDF reader. If you do not update, you might lose your data" Wow. You guys had to stoop so low. Pathetic.

Apart from "may" versus "might," the two texts are identical. The two other prominent reviews on the store page are "to much ads please" and "why it shows everytime" (Google Play store page, 11-06).

What it is

An ordinary PDF tool: open and read, highlight and annotate, handwriting, scan with the camera, image to PDF, merge and split. Free to download, with ads, and in-app purchases from $3.29 to $39.99.

The developer page says NovaMobi Studio. Scrolling down to "About the developer" shows an individual from Ha Giang province, Vietnam, with a Gmail address. The same account has three more apps: file recovery, phone cleaner and GPS location (Google Play developer page, 11-06).

(The October figures are third-party estimates; 11-06 is Google Play's install count. Play refreshes the count only every few days, so don't read it as single-day data.)

The shape of the curve says more than the total: in early October it climbed 350k in three days, then barely moved for the next two weeks, then picked back up to ten to twenty thousand a day in late October. Word-of-mouth growth doesn't look like this; it looks more like someone turning budget on, off, and on again (inference). In the last 7 days it added 170k.

At its peak in Oct 29 it ranked #18 on the South Korea tools free chart, and during the same period it also charted in tools charts for Indonesia, Thailand, Turkey, Poland, Italy, Germany and Vietnam. By Nov 6 only Indonesia #66, South Korea #144 and Poland #186 remained, and it was falling (Google Play charts).

Two more numbers show these users didn't find it on their own:

  • The rating count is only 0.17% of installs (1,248 ratings against 740k installs), and not a single positive review contains any written text.
  • Nobody online is talking about it. No media, no discussion on X, no one showing off earnings. All you can find are pages auto-indexed by chart sites.

It's not an app, it's a template

Searching Google Play for its traits turns it up: package names like "com.xxx.pdfreader.pdfeditor" or the reverse, privacy policies hosted on Google Sites, Vietnamese-name Gmail addresses. You can find more than twenty nearly identical apps (Google Play, 11-06):

There are also GoPix, LunaraSoft, PixSoft and NimbusSoft, which were published between late September and mid-October and are only just starting to gain traction.

The evidence that they're one operation, or at least share the same supplier, is on the store pages:

  • The in-app purchase prices are identical: all ten I checked are "$3.29 – $39.99."
  • The store copy is the same text with the words swapped. NovaMobi writes "combines reading, annotation, scanning, conversion, organization, and file utilities in one clear interface. 📖 Open and Read PDFs," while OrionMobi writes "combines practical document tools … in a clear, convenient interface. 📖 View and Read PDFs."
  • Every account has the same four-app bundle: PDF reader, file recovery, phone cleaner and GPS location, with even the package suffixes matching (nova.allrecoveryfiles, orion.allrecoveryfiles, ...).
  • All of them host their app-ads.txt on the same third-party service. That file is used by ad networks to verify inventory, which suggests the money mainly comes from ads.

Sibling apps get the same kind of one-star reviews. On Neo Utilities, an Italian user wrote in Nov 1, giving it 1 stars: "I was almost forced to install it just to keep using YouTube." On PDF ProX, a French user wrote in Oct 1: "A forced update notice pushed me into installing this." Another, in Oct 30: "I installed one, it made me download another, and now my phone is full of useless stuff" (Google Play reviews).

This playbook isn't new this year. Android Authority published "My dad's phone is full of junk PDF apps, and I blame Google" in Nov 2025 27, describing the same scheme: an app-open ad disguised as "Can't read file, please update your PDF app" that led older users to install 4 PDF readers with similar names.

Where the money comes from

It's mostly ads: app-open, interstitial and banner, plus in-app purchases. Whether anyone actually buys, or whether ad revenue covers the paid acquisition cost, isn't visible from outside. It has never charted in any country's Top Grossing.

The paid acquisition most likely runs through Google's own app promotion ads: YouTube, the display network, and ad slots inside other apps, with taps landing on the Play store page (inferred from Reddit screenshots and reviews). Meta's ad library shows no ads pointing to this package. Google's and TikTok's public ad libraries didn't reveal the advertiser either. But apps like this mostly run inside Google's ecosystem, so a missing record doesn't mean there was no spend. The spend appears to target countries with high Android share and cheap installs, such as Korea, Indonesia, Thailand, Turkey and Poland (estimated).

Why run twenty-plus accounts? If one gets banned or its rating tanks, the others are unaffected. Multiple accounts can also hold several spots on the country tool charts and across several search terms for "PDF" at once. NovaMobi sits mid-pack in this matrix. It doesn't stand out.

Who it's competing with

PDF readers are one of the most crowded categories on Google Play (Google Play installs, 11-06):

Functionally, none of these products shows any visible difference from the others. What sets this one apart from its sibling apps is distribution: scary creatives plus a multi-account matrix.

Why it took off

  1. Fear-driven demand never runs out. "File won't open" and "your data is about to be lost" are things everyone dreads. Ads disguised as system prompts get high click-through, and people tap and install.
  2. One codebase copied twenty times. The app itself costs nothing to make. All the cost is in paid acquisition. One account runs its campaign, then the next account takes over.
  3. Small countries have low tool-chart thresholds. In Korea, Indonesia and Poland, a few tens of thousands of installs can chart in the tools category, and that brings in some organic installs on top.

Whether the product is any good has nothing to do with it.

If it were you

In one line: this is ad arbitrage running on scare creatives, not a product opportunity. NovaMobi is itself just a mid-tier account in the matrix, and if you join, you're the twentieth-something.

Who it suits: teams that already buy Android installs through Google's ecosystem, have ad monetization experience, own a stable of developer accounts, and can absorb bans. They don't need this article.

Who it doesn't suit: indie devs who haven't run paid acquisition; anyone hoping to grow through search, word of mouth or content (nobody recommends a PDF reader unprompted); anyone who cares about their accounts and reputation. Ads disguised as system warnings plainly violate Google's ad policies. Android Authority and Reddit have already called them out publicly, so these accounts could be cleared in batches at any time.

What you can borrow:

  • Test new apps on small-country tool charts. Korea, Indonesia and Poland's free tool charts can be reached with a few tens of thousands of installs. For any Android tool, you can test a paid acquisition model with a small budget in one or two of these countries first.
  • One account, a bundle of similar anxiety tools. PDF, file recovery, cleaners, locators: the users are the same people, so creatives and monetization can be reused. You could structure a legitimate product line the same way.
  • Ad creatives decide the outcome more than the product. That holds in any paid acquisition business. The difference is that the creatives have to pass review.

If you really want to enter the PDF category: don't race to see whose popup is scarier. The openings are where the big players do poorly: no ads, fast opening, real editing and signing, pay-per-use or one-time purchase, growing slowly through search and word of mouth. But know that this path means competing with Adobe, WPS and the built-in phone viewers, and it won't be quick.

Signs this read is wrong: (1) over the next month or two, more of these template accounts keep charting one after another in the Korea and Indonesia tool charts, and Google doesn't act against them. That would mean the arbitrage window is still open and the barrier is just buying skill. (2) Conversely, if Google pulls large numbers of these PDF accounts before year-end, or if Office Suite Pro and NovaMobi vanish together, the window is closing.

Where users come from
  • Confirmed Google ad system (YouTube / display / in-app) creatives disguised as system warnings: the pinned review on the store page (2026-10-03) quotes the ad: "You are currently using an older version of the PDF reader. If you do not update you might lose your data." The same copy appears in a Reddit r/Adblock 2026-08 post, shown inside the Android YouTube app. Sibling apps' reviews say "forced to install it to keep using YouTube" and "forced update notice pushed me to install this."
  • Inferred Pulsed paid acquisition: AppstoreSpy estimates the install curve as 10-05→10-08 +347k, a few hundred to a few thousand per day from 10-09 to 10-22, recovering to 1–37k/day after 10-25. Ratings per install only 0.17%, with 0 written reviews.
  • Confirmed Multi-account matrix + small-country tool charts / store search: twenty-plus template apps with the same package-name structure, the same sites.google.com privacy page, the same app-ads-txt.com, and the same $3.29–$39.99 in-app pricing. They have charted in tool charts in 11 countries including Korea, Indonesia, Thailand, Turkey and Poland.
  • Inferred Meta ads: no Page in the metaads library linking to this package.

Why PDF Reader & PDF Editor (NovaMobi Studio) took off

  • Package: com.novautilities.pdfreader.pdfeditor (Google Play, tools category)
  • Developer: NovaMobi Studio. The "About the developer" section names an individual, NGUYEN TRUONG KHOA, with an address in Ha Giang province, Vietnam, and the email [email protected] (Play store page, 2026-11-06 crawl).
  • Launched 2026-08-20 (googleplay library app.released). Latest version 1.1.3-Nova, updated 2026-10-08.
  • Monetization: contains ads + in-app purchases at $3.29–$39.99 each
  • Research date: 2026-11-06

Bottom line

It didn't take off on the strength of the product. It is one node in a Vietnamese "PDF reader reskin matrix": the same codebase, the same store-listing template and the same in-app price points, batch-published under dozens of individual developer accounts with different names. Users come from Google's ad system (YouTube and in-app display ads) running creatives disguised as system alerts like "Your PDF reader version is outdated, you may lose data if you don't update," and ad revenue pays back the spend. Its growth is the result of acquisition budget aimed at this account.

1. Data: how much did it actually grow?

  • +170,213 over the last 7 days (the data field installs_gain_7d). Play install counts refresh in batches every few days (sibling apps all jumped on the same days, 10-31, 11-03 and 11-05), so don't trust single-day figures. But the pulsed shape is clear: a hard push in early October, a stall mid-month, then a restart late in the month. That is a classic budget-switched acquisition rhythm, not organic word of mouth.
  • Charts: 10-29 #18 in the Korea tools free chart and #119 overall in Korea; best rank #22 in the Indonesia tools chart (10-31). In the same period it also charted in tools charts in Thailand, Turkey, Poland, Italy, Argentina, Germany, Vietnam and Malaysia. By 11-06 it had only Indonesia #66 / Korea #144 / Poland #186 left, and it is sliding (googleplay chart_rank).
  • 1,248 ratings, 4.6 stars, 0 reviews with written text (library written_reviews=0). Ratings per install come to about 0.17%, which is very low. The star distribution captured in the library shows only 4-star and 5-star ([0,0,0,468,780]), but the three most visible reviews on the store page are all complaints (see below). The rating distribution doesn't reflect real satisfaction. (There may be an in-app prompt that only sends happy users to rate on the store, unverified.)

2. Where users come from: the evidence chain

(1) Ad creatives disguised as system warnings: high confidence

  • Pinned store-page review (Dirk Walter, 2026-10-03,6 people found it helpful): "'You are currently using an older version of the PDF reader. If you do not update, you might lose your data' Wow. You guys had to stoop so low. Pathetic." Two more: "too many ads please" and "why does it show every time." (Play store page, 2026-11-06 crawl)
  • The identical copy appears in a Reddit r/Adblock post 2026-08: inside the Android YouTube app, after skipping a video ad, a pop-up appears reading "Warning. You are currently using an older version of the PDF reader. If you do not update, you may lose your data." It has an "Update" button, is designed to look like a system alert, and only shows "Sponsored" if you scroll. The user assumed their phone had been hacked. (https://www.reddit.com/r/Adblock/comments/1vux33w/youtube_ads/, reposted at notcooltobully.blogspot.com/2026/08/youtube-ads.html). The post doesn't name the app, and it predates NovaMobi's surge, so it is probably a template shared across the matrix.
  • Reviews of sibling apps in the same matrix: an Italian user on Neo Utilities said they were "almost forced to install it just to keep using YouTube" (2026-11-01,1 stars); a French user on PDF ProX said "a forced update notice pushed me to install this app" (2026-10-01,1 stars), and "installed one, then downloaded another, and now my phone is full of useless stuff" (2026-10-30) (googleplay review).
  • Background: Android Authority 2025-11-27 article "My dad filled his phone with random PDF apps and I blame Google" describes the same playbook: a splash ad on preinstalled Office disguised as "Unable to read file. Try updating your PDF application / Update now," which tricked older users into installing 4 similarly named PDF readers. (https://www.androidauthority.com/android-pdf-ad-scam-3617878/)

Inference: distribution is mainly Google App Campaigns (YouTube, Display Network, AdMob in-app traffic), plus other in-app ad networks. Creatives exploit the anxiety of "can't open my PDF" and "afraid of losing data"; the landing page is the Play store listing, one tap to install. Target countries lean toward places with cheap CPI or high Android share: South Korea, Indonesia, Thailand, Turkey, Poland, etc.

(2)Meta / TikTok / Google ad libraries: no direct records found

  • The metaads library has no Page tied to this package name (the only match was another small PDF app, "PDF Editor: Best Reader," with 17 likes and 18 ads running, landing on com.pdfeditor.pdfreader.document.viewer).
  • The googleads / tiktokads libraries only track a set list of products, and this app isn't on it, so finding nothing doesn't mean it isn't advertising.

(3)Store search / ASO: secondary

  • The title is the category keyword "PDF Reader & PDF Editor," package pdfreader.pdfeditor, and it has charted in the top 20 of the Korean Tools chart. It picks up some chart and search traffic, but the shape of the install curve (tens of thousands a day spiking, then going flat for two weeks) shows paid traffic is the main driver, not organic search.

(4)Channels not seen: no TikTok / Xiaohongshu / X / HN creators, no press coverage, no founders posting revenue. x-radar searches for "PDF reader fake update ad" in the last 60 days returned 0 results.

3. The matrix: it's not a product, it's a template

In the googleplay library, filtering for package names com.<name>.pdfreader.pdfeditor or com.<name>.pdfeditor.pdfreader, privacy policies hosted at sites.google.com/view/<name>-policy, developer sites at <random string>.app-ads-txt.com, and Vietnamese-name Gmail accounts turns up more than twenty apps from the same template (googleplay app / app_profile, 2026-11-06):

Evidence they're the same operation (or one distributor supplying multiple individual accounts):

  • In-app purchase ranges are identical: all ten spot-checked are "$3.29 – $39.99 per item" (Neo Utilities starts at $3.49) (googleplay app_snap).
  • Store copy follows the same template: NovaMobi "…combines reading, annotation, scanning, conversion, organization, and file utilities in one clear interface. 📖 Open and Read PDFs…"; OrionMobi "…combines practical document tools … in a clear, convenient interface. 📖 View and Read PDFs…"; ZentrixSoft, AstraMobi, and TeraSoft are the same structure with different words.
  • Each account's product lineup is the same set: NovaMobi Studio has a PDF reader + file recovery (com.nova.allrecoveryfiles) + cleaner (com.nova.cleaner.storage.ai) + GPS locator (com.nova.phonelocation.gpstracker); OrionMobi Studio has PDF + com.orion.allrecoveryfiles + com.orion.cleaner.storage.ai; BrightEase Studio has PDF + photo recovery + GPS + com.brightease.cleaner.storage.ai. Even the package suffixes match.
  • All use app-ads-txt.com to host app-ads.txt (used to verify ad network traffic), showing they rely mainly on ad monetization.

How this matrix works: one account puts out 4 "anxiety tools" (PDF won't open, photos lost, phone full, where's my family), the same fear-based ad creatives ("your PDF reader is outdated," "your photos are not safe"; Reddit posts show users receiving messages like "my photos are not safe"), paid acquisition → interstitial / splash ads plus subscription and in-app purchase revenue. Spreading across many accounts diversifies the risk of bans and bad reviews, and grabs more search slots and chart spots at once. NovaMobi is just one of the mid-to-small ones.

Competitors are everywhere; PDF readers are one of the most crowded categories on Play. NovaMobi has no visible functional difference from them.

5. Differentiation

No product-level differentiation. Features (reading, annotation, scanning, merge/split, image-to-PDF) are word-for-word identical to dozens of other accounts in the matrix, and a subset of Adobe / WPS. Its only "difference" is distribution: fear-based ad creatives + a multi-account matrix + ad monetization arbitrage. That's not NovaMobi's own differentiation; it's a playbook the whole matrix shares, and it doesn't stand out within the matrix either (installs rank mid-pack).

6. Visibility

  • Hardly anyone knows about it yet: no media, no big X accounts, no revenue posts. What you can find online is automatic listings on chart sites like AppBrain, Sensor Tower, Appfigures, and Similarweb (it shows up in the Korean, Polish, and Portuguese Tools charts).
  • But the tactic of "disguising system prompts to trick people into installing PDF readers" has already been called out by Android Authority (2025-11) and Reddit r/Adblock (2026-08), and carries a risk of being cleaned up under Google policy.

7. What others can learn

  • Category choice: high-anxiety, low-decision-barrier, high-search-volume tools like "PDF won't open / photos lost / storage full / find someone's location" have high ad click-through and install conversion, which suits paid acquisition + ad monetization.
  • Multi-account matrix spreads risk: the same codebase is listed under multiple developer accounts, so one banned account or one tanked rating doesn't hurt the whole operation; multiple apps can take search slots and national tool charts at once.
  • Budget pulses + small-country tool charts: in places like South Korea, Indonesia, Thailand, Turkey, and Poland, where the bar for tool charts is low, a few tens of thousands of installs can get you charted, bringing in some organic traffic.
  • Parts not worth copying: fake system-warning creatives violate Google ad policy, and both the accounts and developer profiles risk being banned; retention and word of mouth are very poor (rating-to-install ratio 0.17%, and those who leave reviews are mostly complaining).

8. Still unclear

  • Specific channels and spend: its advertiser identity isn't found in the Google Ads Transparency Center (our library doesn't track it); the Reddit screenshots of the scam creatives don't show the package name, and the link to NovaMobi is inferred from word-for-word identical copy plus reviews.
  • Whether the matrix is one company (one distributor using dozens of Vietnamese individual accounts) or a vendor selling "reskinned source code + ad operations outsourcing" to many individual developers is unverified.
  • Revenue: whether anyone buys the $3.29–$39.99 in-app purchases, and whether ad eCPM covers CPI, has no data; it has never charted in any store's Top Grossing.
  • Whether the rating distribution showing only 4 and 5 stars means rating prompts or review farming is unverified.
  • Whether the +347k on 10-08 was a real single-day count or a merge of AppstoreSpy's observation intervals and Play's count refresh is uncertain; the trend (a huge surge in early October, a stall in mid-month, a restart in late month) is credible.
