Nutree: Eat With Science · NUTREE AI VIETNAM JOINT STOCK COMPANY

A Vietnamese high school student's vlog pushed an AI calorie app to the charts: Nutree is Vietnam's Cal AI, winning on playbook, not features

What it is A Vietnamese-language app that uses AI photo calorie counting and sets diet targets; you can't really use it without paying.

Why it took off It transplanted the paywall funnel of Western AI calorie apps wholesale into Vietnam, using Vietnamese language and Vietnamese food content, plus a long-running stream of posts from TikTok students and fitness creators with tens of thousands of followers. A concentrated push at the end of October drove the Android version onto the charts.

BHow you could follow suit Don't copy it in Vietnam. Take the same playbook (local language and food + monthly local micro-creators + hard paywall + local QR-code payments) to the next small-language market nobody has tried, and make local food recognition more accurate than theirs.

Grade B: the playbook is clear and replicable, and few people know about it; but AI calorie features are already commoditized, Vietnam itself is crowded, you'd need to find an empty market, and you'd have to deal with free ChatGPT alternatives and paywall complaints, so the weaknesses are obvious. Hardly anyone knows about it

A small company in Cần Thơ, Vietnam, incorporated only 2025 years ago in November, transplanted the Western AI calorie app playbook wholesale into Vietnam: a questionnaire first, then a paywall, then an annual subscription, translated into Vietnamese with Vietnamese food. It also hired a batch of TikTok micro-creators with 10k to 70-80k followers to post long-term. The iOS version has stayed in the top ten of Vietnam's health and fitness grossing chart; in late October the Android version rode a wave of creator videos, and weekly installs went from 1,565 to 7,066. Functionally it is barely different from its peers; the playbook is what's worth learning.

A "high school daily life" video with 120k views

In the same few days, the same account also took brand deals with Vinamilk high-protein milk, Cocoon skincare, Dr.G skincare, and a laptop: a standard commercial micro-creator. Since June she has posted 14 videos for Nutree, each with 110k to 380k views, a long-term partnership.

From Oct 25 to Nov 5, videos like this suddenly flooded in: bkhanh1000 with over 50K followers, bunniecutie_5620 with 67K (10-17 that one literally says "sending you my rate card"), tuantuan17007 with 20K followers (10-29 one at 145K, 11-02 another at 200K)... I could find 15 Vietnamese creators and 41 videos tagging @Nutree Vietnam, adding up to about 4.9M views.

Over the same period, Nutree's Android daily new installs went from 70-80 a day to about 400,10-31 to 11-02 a day on average 1,500; 10-29 climbed to #3 in Vietnam's Google Play Health & Fitness free chart. Once the creator posts ended, the curve fell back to just over 160 a day, and 11-06 dropped to #11 (Google Play install counts and rankings, 11-06).

What it is

Nutree: Eat With Science, an AI nutrition assistant. It estimates nutrition from food photos, scans barcodes and nutrition labels, and also logs text descriptions; it calculates basal metabolic rate from height, weight, and activity level, and daily protein, carb, and fat targets. Its own main selling point is a "weekly calorie budget": if you overeat one day, the excess is spread across the remaining days of the week, protein stays fixed, and only carbs and fat are adjusted; it then suggests what to eat based on the calories left for the day.

Cal AI and a crowd of similar apps all have these features. What's different is that the interface, questionnaire, and content are all in Vietnamese, featuring local dishes like braised pork and eggs, water spinach, and Vietnamese milk coffee.

It is run by Nutree AI Vietnam Joint Stock Company, registered in Cần Thơ city, 2025-11-14 listed (Vietnam business tax code lookup), with a gmail contact address; the team appears very small. Interestingly, its official TikTok account @nutree.ai was opened as early as June 2025, posting fitness exercise videos first, with the top video reaching 1.24M views. The product wasn't live yet, but an audience was already being built.

The real main event is on the iPhone

The Android surge is easy to read as a new hit, but the Android version only launched in September. It's filling a gap. The iOS version went live in February 2026. As of 11-06, the Vietnam store already had 4,295 ratings at an average of 4.69, with 185 new ones over the last 7 days. From 10-28 to 11-06 it held a spot between #6 and #11 on the Vietnam App Store's Health & Fitness Top Grossing chart (App Store Vietnam, 11-06). Going by the rating count, iOS downloads are far above Android's 7 thousand.

It only operates in Vietnam. Its chart positions and ratings in both stores are almost entirely in the Vietnam store.

Where the money comes from: a hard paywall

When you open the app, you first face a long questionnaire: height, weight, goals, daily routine… Only at the final step does it tell you to pay; without paying you basically can't use it. Prices are roughly 99,000 Vietnamese dong per month (about $4) and annual plans range from 300k to over a million Vietnamese dong (as claimed in user reviews, several tiers coexist, which suggests price testing); the in-app purchase range listed on Google Play is $3.99–$49.99.

Vietnamese users are very unhappy about this. Between August and October, more than a dozen one-star App Store reviews complained about the same thing:

"I saw other people's reviews on TikTok saying it was good, so I downloaded it, had to log in and do all kinds of things, and in the end I have to pay to use it?" (App Store, one star, 10-30)
"I accidentally saw an ad on FB saying this calorie app is free, but it made me spend time filling in a pile of info, and the last step was paying to 'start the journey'." (App Store, one star, 08-13)
"I've never seen a calorie app that asks for money the first time you open it. Plenty of similar ones are free, and you're charging 99k a month." (App Store, one star, 08-06)

But it has stayed in the top ten of the grossing chart the whole time, and the Android version once reached #104 on Vietnam's Google Play overall Top Grossing chart (11-02). There are also people who paid and kept using it:

"I started using it in Aug 27; as a student I spent quite a bit on a yearly plan… and so far I've lost 5 kg." (App Store, five stars, 10-15)

Two more details are worth noting: the official website has a page where you buy the annual plan for 599,000 Vietnamese dong by scanning a VietQR code to pay by bank transfer, bypassing the store's 15–30% cut. Many young Vietnamese don't have credit cards linked, so this route is both cheaper and more convenient. There is also a web-based questionnaire funnel that pre-screens people outside the store.

Revenue is not public. It sits around #6 in Vietnam's iOS Health & Fitness grossing chart, with monthly revenue probably in the tens of thousands of dollars (inferred, unverified).

Where users come from

  • TikTok micro-creators, the main channel. Students, fitness, and lifestyle creators with 1 to 70k followers, some on monthly long-term contracts and others adding volume on a rate-card basis; some have exclusive promo codes (such as "LEOTAYBE" in leotaybe's video), and the official pricing page also lists invite codes and discount codes. The cost is far lower than big influencers, and "classmates use it" is more credible than an ad.
  • Facebook ads. Reviews in both stores mention "saw the FB ad and came in," and the Facebook page has videos with a "Try it now on the App Store" button. The scale of spend is not visible.
  • Official account content. Its fitness videos went viral 2025 years ago; recent "calorie fun facts" mostly get a few hundred to a few thousand views, so their impact is limited.
  • The charts themselves. Vietnam's Health & Fitness chart has a low bar: a few thousand installs can push an app into the top three, and once charted it gets some organic traffic; the official site also highlights "#1 in Health & Fitness" as a selling point (inferred).
  • Google Play reviews are almost all short five-star comments like "ok", "hay", or "just started, giving 5 stars first," which doesn't match the sea of paywall one-star reviews on iOS; it looks like the app prompts for ratings in-app (unverified).

Outside Vietnam, almost no one knows about it: no press coverage, not a single mention on X in the last 90 days, and the founders have never posted about their revenue.

Who it's competing with

Vietnam's AI calorie apps are already crowded. 11-06 In the Vietnam iOS Health & Fitness Top Grossing top 25, about 10 of them are in this category:

ProductBackgroundScaleCompared with Nutree
Cal AIUS, 2024Google Play 4.57M installs, charted in 18 countriesThe prototype of this category; Nutree is its Vietnamese version

ChatGPT, photo-based calorie questionsbig tech—Free; one-star reviews say outright "recognition is worse than ChatGPT"

Nutree came late and isn't ahead on features. Its recognition accuracy and stability get the most complaints. It made the top 10 by doing three things none of its rivals did well: real Vietnamese-language content, a whole roster of small local creators, and local payment options.

If it were you

One-line verdict: The playbook can be copied, but not in Vietnam. Ten players are already fighting over that category. The opportunity is to take the whole package, a globally validated AI tool + a small-language market + a local micro-creator network + a hard paywall + local QR payment, and run it in the next country where nobody has done this yet.

Who it's for: People or small teams who live in or know a Southeast Asian, South Asian, Latin American, or Eastern European small-language market, who speak the local language, and who can negotiate prices directly with local creators. Some familiarity with subscription app paywalls and pricing tests helps.

Who it's not for: Anyone hoping to stand out on features alone (this category has become commoditized, and free ChatGPT can already count calories from photos). Anyone who can't stomach a pile of one-star reviews about being forced to pay. Anyone who won't or can't work with creators.

How to do it:

  1. Picking a market: Check the health and fitness Top Grossing chart on each target country's App Store first. If none of the top 25 has a decent AI calorie app in the local language that handles local food, that's an open slot. Markets like Indonesia, Thailand, the Philippines, Malaysia, Turkey, and Poland are worth checking one by one (inferred, not individually verified).
  2. Product: Your recognition and nutrition data for local food has to beat Nutree's. Its biggest complaints are that it misidentifies local dishes and ships buggy updates. That's the one place you can win on the product itself.
  3. Monetization: Put the questionnaire up front and the paywall after it, but offer a three-day trial. That avoids most of the "charged before I could even use it" reviews. At the same time, take payment by QR code on your website to bypass store commissions.
  4. Start a branded account one to two months before launch and post fitness and diet content, the way Nutree did, to build an audience first.

How to acquire users: Sign long-term monthly deals with students, fitness, and daily-vlog creators with 1 to 70K followers, and give each one a unique promo code so you can track results. Concentrate a batch of temporary paid promotion on the days you push for the chart, to get into the top 3 on the free chart. Add Facebook ads as support. In small countries' health and fitness charts, a few thousand installs can get you into the top 3.

When it closes: In Vietnam, this category went from 2023 to 2026 and filled up in about three years. Other small markets will be taken over the same way, with Cal AI-style multilingual versions and local teams. The move needs to happen before the first half of 2027. The earlier, the better.

Signs you're reading it wrong: You hit the top 5 on the health and fitness free chart but never break into the top 20 of the category's top-grossing chart. That means the paywall isn't converting in that market. Or daily new installs drop back to single digits within days of a creator campaign ending, and your chart position falls with them. That means you bought installs, not people willing to pay.

Bottom line

A Vietnamese local team (Nutree AI Vietnam JSC in Cần Thơ) built a Vietnamese-language, Vietnamese-food version of Cal AI. It copies the Western AI calorie app playbook: quiz → hard paywall → annual subscription. Traffic comes from bulk-hired fitness and student-life micro-influencers (KOCs) on Vietnamese TikTok, plus Facebook ads. iOS is the main channel: launched in February, already 4,295 ratings, #6 on the Vietnam iOS Health & Fitness grossing chart. The Android version came later, launching 9–October. A creator push at the end of October lifted it to #3 on the Vietnam Play Health & Fitness free chart. What makes it work is the playbook (localization + paywall + KOC volume), not any real product difference.

1. What it is

  • AI nutrition assistant: photo recognition of food and nutrition, barcode / nutrition label scanning, text-based meal logging, and macro targets calculated from BMR/TDEE. The selling point is a "weekly calorie budget": if you overeat one day, the excess is spread across the remaining days of the week, with protein unchanged and only carbs and fat adjusted. It also recommends what to eat based on the calories left for the day (from the nutreeai.com homepage).
  • Company: CÔNG TY CỔ PHẦN NUTREE AI VIỆT NAM, tax ID 2200826051, registered 2025-11-14, address in Cần Thơ (masothue.com, nutreeai.com/mua-goi). The contact email is a Gmail address ([email protected]), so the team is very small.
  • The TikTok account @nutree.ai was opened back in 2025-06, when it posted fitness-move content under the Nutree AI name. The top video got 1.24M views (TikHub, 2025-06-28). In other words, they built a fitness audience with content before the app launched.
  • Pricing: Play in-app purchases are $3.99–$49.99 (data card). iOS one-star reviews mention monthly plans at 99K VND and annual plans at "300,000 to over 1,000,000 VND." The website has a VietQR bank transfer page for annual cards at 599,000 VND (nutreeai.com/mua-goi), which bypasses store commissions. There is also a web questionnaire funnel at quiz.nutreeai.com.

3. Competitors

Vietnam's AI calorie app space is already crowded. 11-06 In the Vietnam iOS Health & Fitness Top Grossing chart, about 10 of the top 25 are AI calorie / diet apps (appstore database):

Two more apps share the name but are unrelated: “Nutree: Calorie Tracker” by Adel Alharbi in Saudi Arabia (iOS 2026-07-28, getnutree.app, 59 SAR/year), and the US hair-care brand Nutree Cosmetics. Neither is copying it.

4. Where users came from (growth tactics)

  1. TikTok creator / KOC seeding (confirmed, the main channel). Searching TikHub for “nutree / nutreevietnam / app nutree” turned up 15 Vietnamese creators and 41 videos tagged @Nutree Vietnam, about 4.9M views in total:
    • 1m66dailyfit (28K followers, “2K9 high-schooler daily vlog”): 2026-06 to October, 14 videos, 110K–380K views each, tagged #hocsinhcap3 #apptinhcalo, a long-term partnership;
    • bkhanh1000 (54K followers): 5 videos, 1.38M views (July–11-06);
    • bunniecutie_5620 (67K followers): 10-17 one video says outright “sending you my brand rate card” (a creator price sheet), 10-29 one video at 210K views;
    • tuantuan17007 (20K followers): 10-29 145K, 11-02 200K views; also trungandee 100K (11-04), jussstaboytryna 70K (11-05), mrkhongbenchduoc 100kg, blabladepheebs (300K followers), and others, clustered around 10-25~11-05;
    • leotaybe uses a dedicated code “LEOTAYBE” (05-28), which points to creator referral codes / commissions. The website pricing page also describes an “invite / promo code” mechanic.
    • Timing lines up: 10-25~11-05 a batch of creator videos appeared, and at the same time Play daily installs jumped from about 76 to about 408, then to about 1,556 (10-28~11-02), and fell back once the creators finished posting.
    • Users say it themselves: an iOS review reads “lướt trên tik thấy ngta rv oke lắm” (“saw people rave about it on TikTok”, 10-30).
  2. Facebook ads (confirmed): an iOS review says “vô tình xem quảng cáo trên fb bảo app tính calo miễn phí” (saw a Facebook ad saying the calorie app is free, 08-13); a Play review says “thấy qc xog vô thấy mất tiền” (saw the ad, got in, and found it costs money, 10-18); the FB Page has a “Dùng thử ngay tại App Store” (try it now on the App Store) video at 61575405989021. Our Meta ad library doesn't track this Page, so the number of ads running is unknown.
  3. Official account posts (confirmed, limited reach): @nutree.ai has 11K followers and 167K likes. Its fitness content hit big in 2025 (1.24M views, 450K plays). Since 2026-10, the "calorie fun facts" image posts mostly get a few hundred to a few thousand views.
  4. Store search / charts (inferred): The Vietnam Health & Fitness chart has a low bar to entry. Once 10-29 reached #3 on the free chart, the chart position itself brings some organic traffic. The website also uses “#1 Sức khỏe & Thể hình” (#1 in Health & Fitness) as a selling point.
  5. Likely prompted reviews (unverified): Play reviews are mostly short 'ok / hay / tốt / 5☆ trước (haven't used it yet, giving 5 stars)' type 5-star ratings. They don't match the many 'forced to pay' 1-star reviews on iOS, which suggests the app is triggering in-app rating requests. Not verified.
  6. No press coverage. On X, 90 posts in 0 days (x-radar). No TrustMRR listing, and the founder hasn't posted revenue.

5. Why it took off

  • Copying Cal AI's monetization funnel as-is to Vietnam: a long questionnaire first (body data, goals), and the paywall only comes at the end. Without paying you basically can't use it. Negative reviews cluster around “charged before I could use it” and “the ad says free” (about a dozen on iOS 2026-08~10), yet it holds steady at #6–11 on Vietnam iOS Health & Fitness Top Grossing, and has reached #104 on Play's overall Top Grossing. A hard paywall can still generate revenue in a low-ticket market.
  • Vietnamese language and Vietnamese food: the website, questionnaire, and creator content are all in Vietnamese. Topics are local dishes (thịt kho trứng braised pork and eggs, rau muống water spinach, bạc xỉu Vietnamese milk coffee), aimed at young Vietnamese who feel distant from English apps like Cal AI.
  • The creator network is heavier than competitors': peers in Vietnam (CalSnap, Caloer, Wao) show no comparable number of long-term KOC partnerships on TikTok. Nutree has students and fitness creators producing content on a fixed monthly schedule, plus a group of people added as needed at quoted rates. Cost is low (KOCs with 1–70K followers).
  • Website payments via VietQR: the 599K VND annual plan is paid by bank transfer, bypassing the 15–30% store commission. Vietnamese users rarely link cards, so this is also a payment route that fits the local market.
  • Android is only a follow-on: after iOS worked, it moved to Android from 9 to October, using the same creator content to win Android users, which is why the Play curve looks like a sudden breakout.

6. What's the differentiation, and is it why it broke out?

At the feature level there isn't much difference: photo recognition, barcode scanning, text-based meal logging, and macro tracking are all standard across peers. Its own stated differentiator is “a calorie budget that automatically rebalances weekly + meal suggestions based on remaining allowance” (from the official “App đếm calo vs. Nutree” comparison table). That's a useful story point, but no reviewer mentions it. The negative reviews focus on inaccurate recognition, bugs, and forced payment. The real difference is in market + playbook: a Vietnamese team, Vietnamese-language content, a local creator network, and local payment rails. What made it work is that layer, not the features.

7. Visibility and copycats

  • Visibility: almost nobody outside Vietnam knows about it. There's no press, no X discussion, and no public revenue. Inside Vietnam it got seen through paid creators in the TikTok fitness and student scene.
  • Copycats: I haven't seen any clear copycat. But Vietnam's peers were already crowded (CalSnap, Caloer, Wao, Eatsy, Calories: Eat Clean, Mealbird), and Nutree is itself a follower of Cal AI.

8. What to borrow

  • “A globally proven AI tool + a small-language market + a local KOC network + a hard paywall” is a playbook you can copy. Health & Fitness charts in small countries have a very low bar, and a few thousand installs can get you into the top 3.
  • Recruit lifestyle / student / fitness KOCs with 1–70K followers on monthly retainers, add promo codes. It's cheaper than feed ads and users trust it more.
  • A web questionnaire funnel + local QR payment (VietQR) to bypass store commissions is especially useful in markets with low card linking.
  • A front-loaded questionnaire creates sunk cost, then the paywall. The cost is bad reviews, but it still makes the top-grossing chart.

9. Uncertain

  • Real revenue and conversion rates are unknown. #6 on the Vietnam iOS Health & Fitness Top Grossing chart roughly corresponds to monthly revenue in the tens of thousands of dollars (inferred, not verified).
  • The scale of FB / Meta spend, and whether creators are paid per video or on CPS commission, is unclear.
