Octapad: Pro Kits & Mixer · SCA Software

A ₹78k drum kit, free on your phone: small Vietnamese workshops use the word "Octapad"; 40 days in India, 610k installs

What it is A 8-pad electronic drum app for phones, imitating the Roland Octapad that is common in Indian bands and devotional music. It has 20 sound kits, a sequencer and recording, free with ads.

Why it took off "Octapad" is an instrument name Indians already search for, and the real hardware costs ₹70k+. The developer SCA Software ran the same playbook of "local instrument name + simulator + two weeks of scaling to the Indian music chart" with ORG Keyboard and Learn Drum, and this time copied it again.

CHow you could follow Don't copy this app head-on. Either apply the same method to a local instrument name nobody has claimed yet, or build the authentic Indian jagran and bhajan sound packs it does poorly, and get users through "Mobile Octapad" tutorial creators on YouTube.

C grade: the keyword method is worth learning, but the Indian instrument-simulator niche is crowded with Vietnamese and Southeast Asian workshops using the same playbook. The product has nothing to copy, Indian ad rates are low and in-app purchases don't convert, so following means competing on paid acquisition and cost. Only the small slice of authentic local sounds still has some room. Few people know about it yet

An Android app called Octapad: Pro Kits & Mixer, listed in Sep 26, reached 6k installs by Nov 610, and ranked #13 on the India Google Play free music chart. The product itself is an ordinary phone drum pad, made by a small workshop in Bac Ninh, Vietnam. It didn't break out because it was well made. It broke out because it picked the right word and wrapped it in a release playbook that had already worked several times. Below: why the word is valuable, how the installs came in, why you probably shouldn't chase it head-on, and the small slice that is still open.

"nice octapad Pro game"

On Oct 2026 17, a user named bharti sahu left "nice octapad Pro game" on its store page, and 62 people marked it helpful. The day before, another user, Jino Amal, wrote just three words, "too much ad" (too many ads), and 37 people marked that helpful.

These two reviews are almost the whole app: Indian users treating it as a casual "game," and a developer who relies on ads.

To see why "octapad" is valuable, you need to know what it is in India. The Octapad was originally Roland's 8-pad electronic percussion instrument. It has long been forgotten in Europe and America, but in India it has remained a workhorse: devotional music (bhajan), all-night jagran gatherings, wedding bands and Bollywood backing tracks all rely on it. Roland's own article calls it "India's 808," and describes a whole community of "Octapadists," some YouTubers with close to a million subscribers.

A Roland SPD-30 sells for ₹78,218 on Amazon India (11-06), and used units go for two to three lakh rupees. What do people who can't afford one do? Search "Mobile Octapad" on YouTube and you'll find a whole Hindi tutorial scene: how to play bhajans on an eight-pad phone app, how to download jagran sound packs (called patches locally), how to make your own "phone octapad" sticks. Single videos get tens to hundreds of thousands of views. The demand was already there, and one word could catch it.

What it is

Open it and you get 8 drum pads, 20 swappable sound kits, per-pad volume and pitch controls, a built-in 4- to 32-step sequencer, and recording. It also bundles an on-screen piano page and a generic drum pad page. The store subtitle reads "Pro Octapad with full kits, custom pad, recorder & rhythm sequencer."

Free to download, with ads, and one in-app purchase at $5.99 to $29.99. As of today the version is still 1.0.0, and the store listing was changed only once, in Oct 29.

Compared with similar apps, it's hardly different. If anything, it packs more features in and adds "Pro Kits & Mixer" to the name, which makes it look more like a professional tool.

Looking back, third-party estimates show: about 10k in Oct 16, about 17k in Oct 100, and about 27k in Oct 400 (AppstoreSpy estimates). In other words, two weeks after launch it was gaining tens of thousands per day. A new app with no reputation and no creator promotion would rarely cold-start that fast.

Another number worth noting: roughly one rating for every 800 installs, 1 in total. For utility apps monetized through paid acquisition and ads, that ratio is typical, which suggests most users install, tap around a few times, and leave (inference).

Also, Play install counts are not updated daily. Oct 31 jumped by +85k at once, Nov 3 added +92k, and the days in between show 0. You can only read the trend from averages.

Who built it: an instrument-app production line

The developer is SCA Software. The store page lists a contact named Đặng Huy Thành, based in Thuan Thanh district, Bac Ninh province, Vietnam. Its website scasoftware.top just shows a Vietnamese hosting provider's default page, with only a privacy policy posted.

On Google Play it has at least 5 apps that gained traction, totaling 5.49M installs:

Octapad: Pro Kits & Mixer2026-09-26610k

(Google Play,11-06)

ORG Keyboard is also worth a look. "ORG" is what Indians call Casio-style electronic keyboards. Like "Octapad," it's a hardware name locals already know. Two weeks after launch it went from a few thousand to ten or twenty thousand per day, with several single-day spikes of a hundred thousand-plus, then settled to around 10k per day. Octapad's curve is nearly a photocopy.

So this isn't a single flash of inspiration. It's a process: pick an instrument name Indians will search for → use shared audio and code to build a simulator → scale within two weeks of launch → climb the India music free chart → live off chart and search organic traffic → repeat with the next one (inference).

Where the traffic comes from

  • Search. The title is "Octapad," and searching "octapad" in the India Play store (logged out) ranks it #4. This one can be confirmed.
  • India music free chart. This chart has a low bar: with two or three hundred thousand global installs per day you can reach #13, and half of the top 30 are instrument simulators, drum pads and pianos. Once charted, it also gets exposure from category browsing.
  • Paid acquisition. No direct evidence. Neither public ad library shows it, but both only cover part of the market. The inference rests on three things: it scaled within two weeks, sister apps show identical curves, and the rating rate is very low. That suggests Google app ads (inference).
  • Cross-promotion. The "More by SCA Software" section on the store page lists Learn Drum and other drum, piano and DJ apps, and the apps very likely funnel users to each other (inference).
  • Creators. None found. Searching "octapad app" on TikTok, most of the top 20 results are a Latin American creator called @tap_music_live promoting other Octapad apps (the highest single video is about 780k views). Indian tutorials on YouTube mostly feature long-established drum machine apps.

The money comes from ads. People who play drums leave the app open for long sessions, which suits interstitial and rewarded video ads, and the "too much ad" review, with 37 helpful votes, shows the ads are dense. Ad rates in India are low, but the volume is high, so the business runs on volume.

(Google Play, 11-06; TikTok view counts come from TikTok search)

Octapad: Pro is a latecomer to this niche. It didn't take anyone's share. It just pushed its way to the front of a chart already full of reskins, by pushing distribution.

Nobody knows it yet, but there's not much to take

It has almost no visibility: no media coverage, nobody on X has mentioned "octapad" in the past 30 days, and the developer hasn't posted any revenue. It only appears on download sites and the India music charts of a few third-party trackers. In principle, that's good news.

But this "nobody knows it" doesn't carry much value. The secret of this business isn't in this one app. It's in this category: at least four or five Vietnamese and Southeast Asian workshops are running instrument simulators for India's music charts this year, and they execute far better than a newcomer would.

If it were you

One-line verdict. Don't copy it head-on. It only gets where it is because of a ready-made pipeline and a feel for paid acquisition. The product itself has nothing worth learning, and a whole crowd on this chart is already doing the same thing. What's worth learning is how it picks keywords, and what's worth building is the small slice it hasn't done well.

Who it suits. Small teams that already have AdMob monetization experience, know Google App Campaigns, and have a reusable audio app codebase. Or people who know the Indian devotional music and wedding band scene, and can find and build authentic jagran and bhajan sounds.

Who it doesn't suit. First-time app builders counting on organic installs (there's no organic installing on this chart, the top spots are all pushed); anyone hoping to earn from subscriptions or IAP (it has $5.99–29.99 in-app purchases and has never charted in any Top Grossing list, Indian users don't pay for this); anyone unwilling to compete on cost with Vietnamese studios.

How to build it. Two paths, pick one.

One: keep the approach, change the word. Find a local instrument name that Indian users know but that simulators haven't yet filled up: dholak, tabla, harmonium for India; thammattama for Sri Lanka; güira, cajón for Latin America. Search them on Play. If the top 10 results are all small apps with tens of thousands of installs, there's an opening. Copy the method: one instrument, one interface, ad monetization.

Two: build the "sound" that the others get wrong. The YouTube "Mobile Octapad patch download" tutorials out there show that Indian users don't really want 8 pads. They want patches that sound like jagran, bhajan, and regional folk. A mobile octapad with an authentic Indian sound library, patch import, and song-by-song lessons tied to videos is not the same thing as these generic reskins (inference).

How to get users. Put the local instrument name in the title to capture search. Then either do what the peers do: run app ads for two weeks after launch to push into the category chart. Or, if you take path two, find YouTube creators making Hindi "Mobile Octapad" tutorials. Their videos get tens of thousands of views, so partnership rates should be reasonable (inference).

When to launch. Indian wedding season runs November to February, and jagran and religious festivals happen all year. Get live and through a first round of testing by late December to catch this wave.

Signs you read it wrong. ① Octapad: Pro drops out of the top 30 of the Indian music chart before December, with daily installs falling to a few thousand. That means this approach has a shelf life of only a month or two, the traffic was bought, and it stops when the spend stops. ② The instrument name you picked gets under 10k installs after a month. That means the word has no search volume behind it. Move on to the next one. ③ An octapad app with authentic Indian sounds is repeatedly recommended in YouTube tutorials. That means the second path already has someone in it.

Why Octapad: Pro Kits & Mixer (com.octapad.drum.machines) got traction

In one line: a batch-tool app studio in Vietnam, SCA Software (developer Đặng Huy Thành, Bắc Ninh, Vietnam), makes a "mobile electronic drum pad (Octapad)" app. It launched on 2026-09-26, reached 610k installs in 40 days, mostly from Google Play in India. The product is a standard reskin: 8 drum pads, 20 sound kits, a step sequencer, plus piano and pad pages. It earns from ads and $5.99–29.99 in-app purchases. It works for two reasons. First, "Octapad" is a steady search term in India (Roland Octapad is common among bands, devotional music bhajan groups, and wedding bands). Second, the studio has a mature "instrument simulator → Indian music chart" playbook. See its sister apps ORG Keyboard (1.19M installs 68 days after launch) and Learn Drum (2.75M) for the same play. The product itself has no clear differentiation.

  • The Play page lists the address as Thuận Thành, Bắc Ninh province, Vietnam. Contact: Đặng Huy Thành, email [email protected]. The website scasoftware.top is just TinoHost's (a Vietnamese hosting provider) default page, showing only a privacy policy. AppBrain says it has 21 apps and has charted in the top 100 across 10+ countries.

The Play page also lists DJ Mix Studio, Fluid Magic live wallpaper, Pet On Screen, and more.
  • ORG Keyboard's curve looks a lot like this app's. Two weeks after launch it went from a few thousand to 1–27k installs a day, with a few single-day spikes of 18–270k (10-04, 10-08, per AppstoreSpy's estimates), then settled to about 10k a day. The two curves share the same shape: fast scale-up after launch, concentrated in India, one peak, then a fall back to steady daily adds. We read this as a repeatable launch process.

Paid acquisition (Google App Campaigns / traffic swaps)Only indirect evidence: it was adding 1–20k installs a day two weeks after launch, which is faster than a real organic cold start. Its sibling ORG Keyboard shows the exact same scale-up curve. Roughly every 800 installs produce about 1 ratings, consistent with the typical ratio for these utility-style apps. Vietnamese utility-app shops typically recoup through AdMob and scale with UAC. 5. Why it took off

  1. The demand is already there. "Octapad" is a well-known hardware name in India (and in Sri Lanka and the Latin American cumbia scene). Many people search "mobile octapad" to practice on their phones or find Indian sounds (Hindi "Mobile Octapad App" tutorials on YouTube have hundreds of thousands of views). This product's title takes that keyword directly.
  2. This is a launch playbook that has already been proven. SCA's ORG Keyboard (1.19M) and Learn Drum (2.75M) followed the same path: cheap instrument simulators, aimed at the India music Top Free chart, scaling within two weeks of launch. This product is another copy of that playbook.
  3. The India music Top Free chart has a low bar. Two or three hundred thousand global installs a day is enough to reach #13. Once charted, the app picks up organic traffic from chart exposure and category browsing.
  4. The money comes from ads. High install volume and long in-app sessions (the drum pad stays open while you play) suit interstitial and rewarded ads. One user review saying "too much ad" got 37 helpful votes, which suggests the ads are dense. In-app purchases ($5.99–29.99) are a supplement; the app has never charted on Top Grossing.

6. Differentiation

At the product level there is almost no difference. 20 sound kits, customizable pads, a sequencer (4–32 steps), recording, and piano and drum pad screens are nearly identical to STDI Octapad and Octapad Live Drums. The only real "differences" are two. First, the feature bundle is broader (octapad, piano, drumpad, and sequencer in one app). Second, the "Pro Kits & Mixer" in the name makes it sound more like a professional tool. It isn't performing because the product is different; it's performing because this studio knows how to launch: keyword choice, pushing the India chart, and multiple apps funneling users to each other.

7. Visibility and copycats

  • Visibility: almost nobody knows about it yet. No media coverage, no one on X mentions it, and nobody is posting revenue. It only appears on download sites and third-party charts (Sensor Tower / AppFollow / Appfigures India charts).
  • Copycats: I found none specifically copying this product. But the "India instrument simulator" niche it sits in is already packed with apps copying each other (LAMAI, Neli Creative, AVA GAMES, and WorkPlay Space's drum pad and beat maker apps are all chasing the same chart).

8. What to borrow

  • Use a hardware or instrument name that local users already know (Octapad, ORG / Casio Keyboard, Tabla, Dholak) as the title's lead word, build a low-cost simulator, and target India, a market where the category chart bar is low and ad CPMs are low but volume is high.
  • One studio ships a string of similar apps that share sound libraries and code and cross-promote each other. Each new app scales within two weeks to climb the category chart; if it doesn't work, they move on to the next one.

9. Still unclear

  • Whether there's paid acquisition and how much: neither ad library covers it, so it can only be inferred from the curve's shape.
  • Which of the big jumps from 10-21 and 10-31 / 11-03 are count refreshes and which are real peaks (such as a paid-acquisition push or a Play featuring placement).
  • Retention and ad revenue: no data. The review sample is too small (0 reviews in our library, and only a few on the store page).
  • Traffic outside India: it only charts in 4 countries, and there's no way to split out where the rest of the installs come from.
