One developer shipped five apps in three months, and the fifth hit #1 in Korea's Design category: Nemong, make an Instagram card-news carousel in one minute on your phone
What it is A phone app: pick photos, type text, add the text styles currently trending on Korean Instagram, and make a multi-page card-news / carousel post in a minute. No sign-up, no ads, premium is a monthly subscription or a one-time lifetime purchase.
Why it took off It nails Korean Instagram's specific "card news" format and lets people finish it on their phone in a minute, without opening a computer. The push came from creator 4,000's Threads following, cross-promotion in indie circles, and a lifetime-deal promo that ended on 10-31.
BHow you could follow it Pick a market with its own local image-text format (Japan's 図解 posts, Taiwan's 懶人包 explainers, Xiaohongshu cover text, etc.), and build a phone tool with local text styles and platform safe zones. Before launch, build in public on social platforms to gather people waiting for it; after launch, convert with one time-limited lifetime purchase.
- Data (updated daily) · first launch 2026-10-21 · 11-07 installs 1,658
Android · Total installs worldwide Data 2026-10-29 → 2026-11-07 (10 days, 10 observations). Google's detail page only refreshes install counts every other day, so a flat day doesn't mean nobody installed.
Nemong (네몽) is a small tool from an independent Korean developer: pick a photo, type a few lines, apply a "currently trendy" text style, and get an Instagram carousel in a minute. It ran no paid ads. It relied on the creator building in public on Threads, plus one "lifetime version only until Oct 31" push. Three weeks after launch it reached #1 in the Korean App Store's Graphics & Design free chart. The volume isn't huge and the money won't be big, but this approach and this category could be redone almost as-is in another country and language.
Before Oct 31, "go buy the lifetime version now"
On Oct 28, a Korean Threads user posted: "Just found Nemong and bought the lifetime version right away... the lifetime version is only on sale until this Saturday (10/31)." The same week, the official account of another indie app also posted on Threads: "Everyone go use Nemong!!! Buy the lifetime version before October ends!!"
The same energy shows up in App Store reviews. 10-30 One user wrote: "Saw it on Threads. I never pay for this kind of thing, but I bought it on impulse." 10-28 Another: "So cute. Installed it, saw it said only 4 days left, and bought the lifetime version immediately." (Korean App Store reviews)
The lifetime version is priced at 33,000 won (about $23, the price reviewers reported). Around the deadline, Nemong climbed to #1 in the Korean App Store's Graphics & Design free chart (10-31, 11-01), also reaching #96 overall free and #85 overall top grossing in Korea. The Android version added 878 installs in a single day (10-30). After Nov 2, a different tone appeared in the reviews: "Are you not selling the lifetime version anymore? This is the app I've been looking for, and I'm heartbroken... If you sell it again, I'll promote it everywhere."
What it is
A very mainstream type of content on Korean Instagram is "카드뉴스" (card news): a set of 3 to 10 slides, with a bold headline on the cover and a photo plus a few lines of text on each page after. Review bloggers, tour groups, small shop owners, and side-hustlers post these every day.
Before, making one meant opening a computer for Canva or 미리캔버스 (Korea's local Canva), or aligning pages one by one in a phone photo editor. Nemong compresses it into three steps: pick photos, write text, save. The store page's first line is the pitch: "What to post on Instagram today? Worry no more... one minute is enough."
A few details are built specifically for Instagram carousels, which Canva doesn't do:
- 60 Multiple text styles "often seen in recent card news": squished bold headlines, pastel labels, bouncing text; 35 Cover / body / closing page presets.
- "Safe zones": it marks in advance where Instagram tags, music, and the 1/N page counter will cover your content, "so you don't find out after posting."
- Profile grid preview, with your @handle and page numbers added automatically to each page.
- No sign-up, no ads, and photos stay only on the phone.
Monetization is free basic features plus "Nemong Plus": a monthly subscription or lifetime one-time purchase (Android in-app $2.49–$24.99), unlocking template saving, presets, and cutout stickers.
Where users come from
Almost all of it came from the creator herself.
- Personal Threads account: @ohtt_anyway "오뜨 | 앱 개발·기록" (App Dev · Records), 4,190 followers, with a bio that reads "someone who starts building as soon as they notice something inconvenient" and "Developer of card-news app Nemong." Pinned post "Looking for a card-news app?" (10-26) has 115 likes and 34 comments. She posts progress there, asks which recently trending styles people want, and replies to user requests. People were already waiting before launch; one comment with 10-16 reads "Heard it was coming on Threads, I've been waiting, and bought it the moment it launched."
- Cross-promotion in indie developer circles: she ran an offline meetup for "people who build alone," and other apps in the circle helped spread the word.
- Her own Instagram account: she uses Nemong to make card-news posts introducing Nemong, teaches people how to make card news, and turns user reviews into a carousel called "리뷰 모음.zip" (11-02). The tool's output is its own ad material.
- A few paid creators: an Instagram blogger tagged #광고 (ad) on a Reel promoting it, and a blog tutorial also covered it (10-27).
- Not found: no TikTok, X, or press coverage. Whether it ran Meta ads couldn't be verified.
The user profile is clear from the comments: "Tour and cafe reviewers who can cut and post right in the café on their phone", "people who run fan accounts", "making carousels is my job, this is a revolution", "people who spend an hour in Canva or 미캔 should come here." In one line: Instagram users who are bad with design, don't want to open a computer, and still want posts that look good.
How big it is now
| App Store (Korea) | Google Play | |
|---|---|---|
| Launched | 2026-10-07 | 2026-10-21 |
| Scale | 85 ratings, 4.9 stars (11-06) | 1,658 total installs, +604 over the last 7 days (11-06) |
| Charts | Graphics & Design top grossing #2 to #5; 10-31, 11-01 free chart #1 | Korea Photo & Video top grossing #18 to #21 |
| Other countries | 1 to 2 ratings each in Taiwan, Japan, and the US | Charted only in Korea |
A few things to discount:
- The main battleground is iPhone. Android launched two weeks later, following the iOS momentum, so on its own it looks very small.
- The bar for Korea's Design top-grossing chart isn't high, and #2 doesn't mean much money. Roughly estimated from rating counts and the lifetime price, this wave's lifetime revenue is on the order of $10K–20K estimated, unverified.
- Interest faded after the deadline: from Nov 2, iOS fell back to #2 to #5 in top grossing (11-06 at #5, ahead of Kling and 미리캔버스 and similar apps), and Android daily new installs dropped from 400 to a few dozen. The Android description pushed the lifetime version to 11-30, and iOS users are still asking for it to be sold again.
- Updates are startlingly fast: iOS went through 1.7.6 in a month, and Android shipped 6 versions in one week. The 11-04 release added "a Polaroid frame, emphasized underlining, and direct hex color input," all three of which had been requested in the comments.
Developer ohttne's website says: "Building small apps to keep hobbies going longer." In the three months before Nemong, she had already shipped four apps (a reading log, band practice, photo organizing, and a 3-second video diary), all rated under 25. Nemong is the fifth.
Who it's competing with
| Competitors | What it is | Compared with Nemong |
|---|---|---|
| Canva | All-purpose design tool, Korean iOS 99k ratings | Huge template library but requires login and many steps; awkward to make carousels on a phone |
| 미리캔버스 | Korean local online design tool, strong card-news templates, category top grossing #3 | Requires an account and is template-library style; Nemong is offline and photo-first |
| SCRL, Crsel, PSTR | Western carousel / collage apps, with installs from hundreds of thousands to over twenty million | They do photo collages and English typography, with no Korean-style text effects |
| 크뉴 CRENU | Launched 10-09, a similar phone card-news editor | Nearly identical product positioning, no distribution, 7 ratings |
| Edito | A same-category app launched 11-04 and reached the free chart's #8 in two days | Appeared two weeks after Nemong took off, seemingly built after seeing it inference |
CRENU and Nemong launched two days apart with the same positioning. One hit #1, the other stalled at 7 ratings. The difference isn't the product; it's whether people were waiting for it to launch.
If it were you
B. The category and playbook are portable, but the pool is small and the money is limited. The real barrier is taste and your own small audience. Best for indie developers who already have a few thousand followers on a social platform and enjoy posting image-text content themselves. Not for anyone hoping to cold-start through paid acquisition or organic store traffic.
Who it's for: 1 people who can build native iOS, have a feel for what "trendy text" looks like on local Instagram or Xiaohongshu, and ideally already run a building-in-public account on Threads, X, or Xiaohongshu.
Who it's not for: anyone aiming to launch "another carousel app" in the English market (SCRL, Crsel, Unfold, and Canva are all there); anyone aiming to build a big business (this is a "small but good, a few thousand dollars a month" category estimated); anyone wanting to compete head-on with Nemong in Korea (its users are already speaking up for it, and it ships several updates a week).
How to do it: find a market with its own local image-text format and port the Nemong approach. Japanese Instagram's 図解 posts, Taiwan and Hong Kong's 懶人包 explainers, Chinese Xiaohongshu cover poster text, and Thai and Indonesian info cards all serve the same need inferred, not verified one by one. The product only does three things: 40 to 60 local trending text styles, platform safe zones with grid preview, and no account, no ads. One monthly subscription plus one lifetime one-time purchase.
How to get users: follow Nemong's rhythm. For a month before launch, build in public on Threads / Xiaohongshu / X so people are "waiting for it to launch." After launch, use images made with your own app for all promo material, and turn user reviews into a carousel too. In weeks three and four, run one "lifetime version only until a certain date" push, have friends in your circle amplify it before the deadline, then extend once.
When to move: the sooner the better. Korea already had copycats within two weeks, and someone in other languages will eventually think of it too. Do it while the people who know about it are still a small circle around a solo developer in Korea.
Signs you've misread it: (1) Nemong's iOS Korea category top grossing drops out of the top 20 a month after the lifetime sale ends, meaning this business only holds up on one-time purchases and subscriptions don't retain; (2) when you search your target market, you find a local "phone image-text template" app already holding a steady spot near the top of its category; (3) you build in public for a month before launch and fewer than a few hundred people are waiting for it. This playbook's engine is your own audience. Without it, even a good product is just a second CRENU.

One line
A solo Korean indie developer, 「오뜨 (ohtt / ohttne)」, built this phone-based Instagram 「카드뉴스 (card news) / carousel」 maker. The main battleground is actually iOS (2026-10-07 listing, not Play's 10-21). Driven by the founder's personal Threads account, where he "shows the product off" (4,190 followers), his own Instagram account, a few paid creators, plus a one-time "lifetime purchase, sold only until Oct 31" promotion, it hit #1 in the Korean iOS Graphics & Design Top Free chart and #2 in Top Grossing. The Android version followed 10-21 and is still small (1,658 cumulative installs).
1. Data (how big it is now)
Google Play (data card)
- Listed 2026-10-21 (Play Store launch date). Cumulative installs (googleplay.app_day / AppstoreSpy backfill): 10-28 176 → 10-30 1,054 (+878 in two days) → 11-01 1,416 → 11-04 1,500 → 11-06 1,658. New installs over 7 days: 604.
- The curve is one spike followed by a slow decay: 10-29–30 averaged about 440,11-02/day, 04–28,11-05 about 06/day, recovering to about 79/day. The spike lines up with the days before the iOS lifetime purchase closed (10-31), when the founder and users were pushing "buy now" on Threads.
- Charts (googleplay.chart_rank): Korea Photo & Video Top Grossing #18–21, Top Free #58–73, present every day; also #192–200 on the Photo & Video Top Grossing charts in about a dozen other countries (tail placements, little reference value).
- Read with a grain of salt: the Korea Play Photo & Video Top Grossing bar is very low. On the same day, #16 "롤리즈" had only 2,857 cumulative installs, with SNOW, Meitu, and Picsart, all hundreds of millions of installs, ahead of it. 1,658 installs can hold #21, which means there is some paying, but the absolute volume is tiny.
- No ratings or reviews (Play side).
- IAP: $2.49–$24.99 (monthly subscription + lifetime one-time purchase); the Play description says the lifetime version is "on promo until 2026-11-30".
- Very fast release cadence: from 10-28 to 11-04, 1.2.2 → 1.2.8 shipped 6 versions in one week (googleplay.app_snap).
App Store (the real workhorse)
- App ID 6817196863, "네몽: 카드뉴스 만들기 & 캐러셀", listed 2026-10-07, category Graphics & Design, current version 1.7.6 (iTunes lookup, 2026-11-06).
- Korea review count (appstore.app_day): 10-28 48 → 10-30 58 → 11-01 65 → 11-04 77 → 11-06 83 (iTunes page shows 85,4.9 stars). Ratings grow by about 3–5 per day, with 10-30 adding +10 in a single day.
- Korea chart (appstore.app_day): Graphics & Design Top Grossing 10-28–30 at #2; 10-31 and 11-01 Graphics & Design Top Free at #1, while also charting Korea overall Top Free #96 and overall Top Grossing #104 / #85; after 11-02 it fell back to Top Grossing #2–5 in its category (11-06 at #5, ahead of Kling, 크레페, 미리캔버스, and Collage Maker).
- Other storefronts are basically zero (Taiwan 1 ratings, Japan 1, US 2). A purely Korean product.
Developer
- ohttne (오뜨네) site ohttne.com: "We make small apps so your hobbies can last." The iOS lineup has 5 apps: 시오리 (reading log, 2026-08,25 ratings), 포밴드 (band rehearsal, 2026-07,10 ratings), 아사진정리해야되는데 (photo organizing, 2026-09,2 ratings), Threes (3-second video diary, 2026-09,6 ratings), and 네몽 (2026-10,85 ratings). The first four never took off; 네몽 was the first to break out, and the 5th app after shipping 5 apps in 3 months.
- The founder also ran 「SIDE B 혼자 개발하는 사람들 모임」 (a solo-developer meetup, signups closed) and is well known in Korea's Threads indie-dev circle.
2. Competitors
| Competitors | Where | Launched | Scale | How it differs from 네몽 |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Canva(캔바) | iOS/Android/web | 2014/2017 | Play 790M installs; Korea iOS 99k ratings (appstore database) | Does everything, huge template library, but requires login and is desktop-oriented workflow; building carousels on a phone takes many steps. 네몽 does only "photos + text → carousel". |
| 미리캔버스 Miricanvas | iOS / web (Korean-made) | Web for years, iOS 2024-08 | Korea iOS 12.6k ratings, #3 in Graphics & Design Top Grossing | A Korean-made Canva with strong 카드뉴스 templates, but an online design tool that requires an account; 네몽 is offline, no account, photo-first. |
| 망고보드 Mangoboard | Web | Years | A veteran Korean 카드뉴스 web-template site | Desktop-first; 네몽 is phone-first |
| SCRL | iOS/Android | 2017/2024 | Play 25.1M installs; Korea iOS 1,024 ratings | Focused on seamless collage / panoramic carousels, image collages, weak text layout |
| Crsel | iOS/Android | 2025-08 / 2026-09 | Play 288k; Korea iOS 1,316 ratings | Western-style collage / carousel templates, English typography; no Korean 카드뉴스 text effects |
| PSTR | Android | 2026-07 | 165k on Play | AI scrapbook-style carousels, same as above |
| Vivisticker | iOS/Android | 2025-08(Android) | 340k on Play | Sticker / Story direction |
| Unfold(Squarespace) | iOS/Android | 2017 | Korea iOS 2,458 ratings | Story-template focused, an older product |
| 크뉴 CRENU | iOS | 2026-10-09 (almost simultaneous with 네몽) | Korea iOS 7 ratings, best Top Free rank 23 in its category | Same positioning (a phone 카드뉴스 editor), but never took off |
| Edito - 올인원 카드뉴스 제작 툴 | iOS | 2026-11-04 | 0 ratings, reached #8 in Top Free within two days of listing | Similar products that appeared about two weeks after 네몽 took off, likely copycats. |
| AI-generated card news (Claude/Gemini + Canva workflow) | Tutorials / web | 2026 | Lots of tutorials on Instagram/YouTube | Generates the content, while 네몽 doesn't touch AI and only handles layout |
Verdict: lots of people do this, and big players (Canva, 미리캔버스) are strong. 네몽's space is this small slice: phone-first, Korean card-news aesthetic, photo-first, no account, no ads, a picture in one minute.
3. Growth tactics (evidence)
- Founder's Threads personal account, build-in-public (main channel, confirmed): @ohtt_anyway "오뜨 | 앱 개발·기록", 4,190 followers, bio "카드뉴스 앱 네몽 개발자", link ohttne.com/nemong/get/threads (a per-channel tracking link). Pinned post "카드뉴스 앱 찾고 계신가요?" (10-26), 115 likes / 34 comments. Another post, "요즘 유행하는 디자인들 네몽에 넣어뒀는데…", asks users which styles they want.
- Limited-time lifetime one-time purchase (confirmed): the iOS description originally read "네몽 플러스 평생 — sales until 2026/10/31". The days before the deadline lined up with iOS charting #1 in Free apps, #85 overall in Top Grossing, and Play installs up +878 in a single day. Afterward the Play description switched to a lifetime promo extended to 11-30: the classic deadline-manufactured urgency, then pushed back.
- Threads indie-dev cross-promotion (confirmed): another indie app's official account (bake 초간단 AI 영상앱 @bakeapp.official) posted "여러분 네몽 쓰세요!!! 10월 지나가기 전에!! 평생이용권 사세요!"; the founder also ran a SIDE B indie-dev meetup, and the circle cheered each other on.
- Own Instagram account @nemong.studio (confirmed): the founder posts "제가 직접 만든 앱, 네몽을 소개합니다" and "작은 개발자의 앱이 필요한 분들에게 닿을 수 있도록 도와주세요" (asking for shares); card-news tutorials made with 네몽 ("카드뉴스의 기본을 네몽의 기능 소개와 함께"), and "카드뉴스 앱 네몽 리뷰 모음.zip" (11-02), which turns user reviews into a carousel. The product is a tool for producing IG content, so its own marketing material is the product's output.
- Paid creator (confirmed, small scale): Instagram creator "나예요 미달이" (@me.da.rii) Reel tagged #광고: "감동 심한 사진편집 앱을 알아왔어요… 우리 모두 네몽해서…". Another post is tagged "툴디 서포터즈 활동의 일환으로 서비스를 제공받아 작성된 광고" (whether it's directly tied to 네몽 is unverified).
- Blog SEO (confirmed, one post): tistory-style tutorial site edu.dasfl.com 10-27 published "카드뉴스 캐러셀 네몽 가이드" (at the time it said "only offered as an iOS app").
- Organic user showcases (confirmed): on Threads, @huya_meal "네몽으로 만든 캐러셀!", @with__pen "네몽 요즘 완소앱" (praising the Story editing widget).
- Store search: in the Korean store, few competitors rank for "카드뉴스"; the title is directly "카드뉴스 만들기 & 캐러셀", so organic traffic follows from charting #1 in the category (inferred, not verified).
- Not found: X (x-radar, "네몽" 0 posts in the last ~30 days), TikTok (TikHub search for "네몽 카드뉴스" returned no relevant videos), media coverage, Product Hunt, TrustMRR / public revenue. Meta ad library not checked (we only track products on our list).
4. Why it took off
- Targets a very Korean, very specific need: on Korean Instagram, "카드뉴스" (multi-page image-text info cards) is the mainstream content format, used by small businesses, experience-group bloggers, and side-hustlers. Before this, you either used 미리캔버스/망고보드/Canva on a computer, or lined up pages one by one in a general photo-editing app on your phone. 네몽 compresses that into "pick photos, type, save, one minute."
- Aesthetic match: the description literally says "찌부된 굵은 제목, 파스텔 라벨, 글자가 춤추는 들쑥날쑥" and "요즘 카드뉴스에서 자주 보이는 글 모양 60가지". It sells "the text effects that are in right now," not a generic template library. App Store reviews cluster around "막막했는데 쉬운 작업이 됐다" (I was stuck, and it became easy).
- Details built specifically for Instagram: Feed / profile grid preview, IG safe zones (tags, music, 1/N), and automatic @account and page numbers on each slide. Canva doesn't do these.
- No account, no ads, local storage + lifetime purchase: appeals to light Korean users who dislike subscriptions. The time-limited lifetime price converted hesitant users into one-time payers, pushing it to #2 in the category's top grossing.
- Founder brings a small distribution circle: a Korean Threads indie-dev circle (4,190 followers + cross-promotion + the founder's own meetup). In the launch month, dozens of real users posted unprompted about buying the lifetime version.
- Very fast iteration: iOS reached 1.7.6 in a month, Play shipped 6 versions in a week, and user requests (styles, underlines, color codes, polaroid frames) shipped within days, with the founder replying publicly on Threads, which is itself content.
5. Differentiation, and whether it was the reason for the growth
The differentiation is "phone-first, Korean card-news text effects + Instagram-carousel layout details, no account, no ads, one-time purchase." Compared with Canva/미리캔버스 it is much narrower and much faster; compared with European/US carousel apps like SCRL/Crsel/PSTR, it does Korean text effects and info cards, not photo collages. This differentiation is one reason it surfaced in the Korean category charts (local users want that text style), but the direct driver of volume was distribution: the founder's Threads account and the lifetime-purchase deadline. The Android version just rode the iOS heat; on its own, its scale is small.
6. How visible it is
- No public revenue, no media, X, or TikTok coverage; it circulates only in a small circle of Korean Threads indie devs / content creators and on Instagram. It's "being talked about within a small circle."
- Copycat: Edito - 올인원 카드뉴스 제작 툴 (iOS, 2026-11-04 launch, same category, reached #8 in Free within two days); 크뉴 CRENU (10-09) launched almost simultaneously with 네몽, so it isn't a copycat.
7. Takeaways
- Pick a content format specific to one country (Korean 카드뉴스) and make a "one-minute version," with the aesthetic built as "the few text styles that are trendy right now" rather than an ocean of templates.
- The tool itself produces social content → its own account's marketing material = product output; users sharing their work is the distribution.
- A solo dev does build-in-public on Threads + cross-promotion within the circle, combined with a "lifetime purchase deadline" for one concentrated conversion push, then extends the promo.
- Ship the same codebase on iOS first, then Android, to carry the iOS heat over.
- One person shipping 3 small apps in 5 months, with the 5nd one the one that hit: publish many, invest little, see which takes off.
8. Uncertain
- Actual revenue: #2 in Top Grossing (iOS Graphics & Design, Korean store) and the 21 threshold for Play Photography Top Grossing aren't high bars; absolute revenue is likely small (estimated in the thousands to tens of thousands of dollars per month, unverified).
- Whether subscriptions can hold after the lifetime sale ends: after 11-02, the iOS category rank fell from #1 back to #2~5, and Play daily installs dropped from 400+ to a few dozen.
- Whether paid Meta ads are running: no evidence found; the ad library doesn't cover it.
- Whether it can go beyond Korea: English and Traditional Chinese versions are live (Taiwan store name "輪播貼文・照片加字"), but other regions are nearly zero so far.
