# A birth time calculator built by an Istanbul data engineer: #9 on Turkey's iOS overall free chart, with almost no competitors in the store

**What it is** A birth time calculator for your phone: you enter a rough birth window and log a few major life events, and it works out the most likely minutes of birth using astrological algorithms. It runs offline on the device and is a one-time purchase.

**Why it took off** Turkey has heavy demand for astrology, and many people don't know their exact birth time. Until now they had to pay an astrologer or use confusing web tools. The developer is active on Turkish astrology Twitter, and replying to astrology posts gave the app endorsements from astrology accounts. Word of mouth that it "calculates to the minute" spread within those circles.

**B** **How you could follow it** Take the same tool to another country and astrology tradition (Brazil, Mexico, English-speaking markets, or a Vedic version for India), fix its weak spots like the stingy free tier and limited event types, and bootstrap launch through local astrology creators who test it and vouch for it.

Grade B: the category is nearly empty in app stores, few people know about it, and it's not hard to build. But the market is small, one use is usually enough, the wave is already fading, and cold-start depends on local astrology communities vouching for you. Talk is spreading in small circles

Data (updated daily) · first launch 2026-10-23 · 11-04 installs 2,217

Android · Total installs worldwide

Data 2026-10-29 → 2026-11-04 (7 days, 7 observations). Google's detail page only refreshes install counts every other day, so a flat day doesn't mean nobody installed.

Turks love talking about rising signs, but knowing your rising sign requires knowing the exact minute you were born, and many people only know it was "roughly in the morning." Ömer Faruk Ballı, a data engineer in Istanbul, built a phone app for exactly that: Retrace: Birth Time Explorer. You enter a time window and log a few major life events, and it figures out which minutes in the window fit best. It launched on iOS in Oct 10, reached #26 on Turkey's iOS overall free chart by Oct 9, and launched on Android in Oct 23, reaching 4 installs by Nov 2,217. It's small and Turkey-only, and few people know about it. Below: what it is, where the traffic came from, where the money comes from, who the competition is, and whether you can follow it.

### "I had it corrected by an astrologer and it's only off by 5 minutes"

On Oct 26, a Turkish user left a five-star App Store review with specifics: "I used to pay an astrologer to do rektifikasyon (birth time correction). To test this app, I pretended I had no idea of my birth time and only gave it a range to search. The result was only 5 minutes off from what my astrologer said, and I think that's pretty OK. If you could add a few more events, like the date I started university or my siblings' birthdays, I think those 5 minutes could be closed."

The next day, another review: "I only know my birth time because I had it corrected, and here it's only 2–3 minutes off, really impressive 🧿." Another: "I gave it a 1-hour window and it still gave me an accurate minute."

On the evening of Oct 28, the Turkish astrology account @kayratarot reposted one of the developer's replies on X with the comment: "For people who don't know their birth time, this is a very successful app. At least it finds a close time. It makes you proud that someone is building things like this in this field." (X, 10-28)

Interestingly, the developer's own store page and personal website say something different: he tested it on 110 cases with known birth records and found "the peak isn't any more likely to point to the true birth time than a random time." That line has stayed on the app's results page. Almost no users mention it. They want a tool that "calculates my birth time," and once they get one, they go to the comments and say it's accurate.

### What it is

A birth time correction calculator on your phone, using Western astrology algorithms:

- Enter your birthday and birthplace, then pick a time window (morning, noon, afternoon, night, or a custom range);

- Answer questions about your life one by one: marriage, moves, having kids, job changes… fill in as many dates as you remember, or just the month, season, year, or even "how old I was then";

- The results page shows which minutes in the window have the most astrological "contacts" with those events, explains why each event was included, and displays the chart, letting you see how the rising sign changes across the window. House systems include Whole Sign and Placidus;

- Everything is calculated on your phone, with no sign-up and no data uploaded. Under the hood is a C++ core, with a separate native interface written for iOS and Android (developer's personal site).

The store page says it supports 50 languages, but Turkish is the only market with visible traction.

### Why it took off in Turkey

**Dense demand.** Turkey has a large astrology community, and rising signs depend on birth time. Many people only have a rough birth time, or the records in the government system e-Devlet are unreliable. TikTok videos teaching people "how to recover your birth time" get hundreds of thousands to millions of views (one by @tuanayucel reached about 1.5M, one by @ozancankubilay about 400k), and one is titled outright "The birth times you get from e-Devlet are mostly wrong."

**The old options were expensive or hard.** Astrologers offer birth time correction, and platforms like armut.com have more than forty consultants taking bookings. You have to schedule a time and pay hundreds to thousands of lira. Web tools like Astro-Seek are free, but their interface is built for people who already understand primary directions. Retrace turns it into a question-and-answer flow, lets you enter vague dates, and gives results on the spot.

**The developer is part of this circle.** On X he goes by @omerryjane, he already hung out in Turkish astrology Twitter, and he also built a free web astrology site, kozmikatlas.com. The promotion was simple: reply under astrology accounts' posts with "I built a rektifikasyon app that calculates birth time to the minute, available on Google Play and iPhone," plus a link. The same day, he also replied under someone else's post saying "the new calculation engine has 59 detailed event types."

A timing point to be clear about: iOS hit the overall chart at #9 on Oct 26, the reviews clustered on Oct 25–27, and the @kayratarot endorsement came out on Oct 28. So it wasn't that post that pushed it onto the chart. More likely he had already posted a thread earlier, and a few astrology accounts picked it up one after another (inference). One 1-star review (10-26) also says, "you already run ads on X and other platforms," and it's unclear whether that's paid ads or his own promo posts.

### Scale

| Date | What happened |
|---|---|
| 10-10 | iOS release |
| 10-23 | Listed on Android |
| 10-26 | #9 on Turkey's iOS overall free chart (AppInsider) |
| 10-28 | Turkey's iOS overall free chart has dropped to #153; utilities free chart #11 |
| 10-29 → 10-31 | Android install count has stayed at 17, but the app is already ranked #125–149 on Turkey's utilities top-grossing chart |
| 11-01 | Android 17 → 1,435 |
| 11-02 | 2,190 |
| 11-03 → 11-04 | 2,217, barely moving |
| 11-06 | 44 ratings in the Turkish App Store, averaging 3.9 (App Store, 11-06) |

(Android figures are the install counts shown on Google Play)

The Android "+1,418 in a single day" is most likely not all from one day: Play's install counter lags, and the app had already reached the top-grossing chart in the days when the count still read 17. That shows people were installing and paying earlier, and the count was caught up in one jump on Nov 1 (inference).

Overall, it was a small burst: the best iOS Turkey utilities top-grossing rank was #70 (11-01), then it fell to 135 and 196. Android has barely grown since Nov 3.

### Where the money comes from

One-time purchase, no subscription. The free version allows 1 cases and 4 events in total. The Premium one-time purchase allows 3 cases with unlimited events, plus a PDF report. Pro costs more, with unlimited cases and adjustable weights and tolerance. The Google Play in-app prices run $2.99–$9.99, and Turkish reviewers mention "249 lira."

The free tier is very tight: 4 events is just enough to see one result, not enough to verify it. Negative reviews mostly complain about this: "You only let me add 4 things," "Everything costs money, give a trial period first," "One wrong entry uses up your quota and it immediately pushes Pro." But that same wall is what got it onto Turkey's top-grossing charts.

Revenue hasn't been disclosed. Turkey's utilities top-grossing chart ranks a hundred or two hundred apps, and its iOS category top-grossing best was #70. Both bars are low, so my estimate is a few to a few dozen sales a day, in the low thousands of dollars cumulatively.

### Who it's competing with

| Product | Where | Compared with alternatives |
|---|---|---|
| Astro-Seek birth time correction | Web | Free and feature-rich, but you need expertise, and it's not a phone app |
| astro-app.net Rectification | Web | Free, but you have to tweak parameters yourself |
| AskSoma, VedAstro Birth Time Finder | Web | Search "AI gets it right": VedAstro is the Vedic system |
| ClickAstro and other Indian-style rectification calculators | Web | KP / Vedic systems, aimed at India |
| Solar Fire and Janus rectification modules | Desktop software | Used by pro astrologers, a few hundred dollars |
| Real astrologers doing rectification | Online and offline services | Expensive and slow, but users trust it most |
| Pull birth records from e-Devlet, then push ChatGPT | Free | Many people have missing or wrong records; ChatGPT does no ephemeris calculation, so results can't be checked |
| Co-Star, The Pattern, and Turkey's local Merkür | Phone apps, tens of millions of users | They all assume you already know your birth time, with no dedicated rectification tool |

Searching "birth time" and "rectification" on Google Play turns up one native app built specifically for rectification for ordinary people (Google Play, 11-06). I also don't see anyone copying it; the only other thing is a "birth time rectification API" (astrology-api.io), which suggests people want this feature inside other astrology apps.

### If it were you

**B: The gap is real and not hard to build, but the market is small, this wave is already fading, and someone in the local astrology scene has to vouch for you.**

**Who it's for** : Indie devs who know some astrology (or are willing to seriously learn one system) and can write a phone app. Ideally you're in a country with a heavy astrology scene, or you can work with a local astrology blogger.

**Who it's not for** : Anyone looking for a big business. This is a narrow tool sold as a one-time purchase, used once, with little repeat buying. Also skip it if you find astrology itself off-putting or don't want to face the "does this actually work" question.

**How to build it** : Use its recipe, but change the country and the system. There are several markets with heavy astrology demand and people who can't remember their birth time: Brazil, Mexico (Spanish / Portuguese), India (you'd need Vedic or KP, which locals trust), and English-speaking markets, where Co-Star's users also get stuck on "I don't know my birth time." For the product, focus on three things: guided Q&A, fuzzy dates allowed, and an on-the-spot "most likely minute." The gaps in the original are your opening: the free tier is stingy, wrong entries can't be edited, there are few event types (users ask for things like "started university" or "sibling born"), and there's no trial period. You could go one step further: after calculating the time, add a rising sign reading, or sell it as a feature to other astrology apps.

**How to get users** : You can start without paid acquisition. Reply to local astrology bloggers' posts and message them to try it, demoing with their own birth times. Astrology bloggers get asked "what if I don't know my birth time?" all the time, so you're helping them answer their audience. Comment sections on TikTok videos about "how to find your birth time" are ready-made audiences. Entry bars are low in small countries, so one wave of endorsements can push you into the top of the free overall chart, and then rankings and search can carry it.

**When's the window closing?** : There's no hard deadline, but you want to move before it fully rolls out to 50 languages. The developer ships fast (1.1.1 updates a month), and once they find their next astrology hit in Brazil or the English markets, those gaps are gone.

**What would mean you read it wrong** : If its Turkish top-grossing rank keeps sliding past #200 and ratings stay stuck in the forties, it's a one-time curiosity in one circle, used and dropped, and the same would happen in any other country; if a few months from now it charts in other countries, the demand is broad, and entering then is too late, so you'd need to target the system it doesn't cover (Vedic) or a different audience.

## Why Retrace: Birth Time Explorer (com.omerfarukballi.cosmicplus) got traction

> In one sentence: an Istanbul indie developer (a data engineer by day, who is himself part of Turkey's astrology Twitter scene) built a **phone-based birth time rectification (rektifikasyon) calculator** . He replied to posts by Turkish astrology bloggers on X with the link, and after astrology accounts endorsed it, the iOS app climbed to #9 on Turkey's free overall chart, and Android then picked up about 2,200 installs. It's a "small burst within Turkey's astrology circle," not a global phenomenon; the scale is small and few people know about it.

### 1. What it is

- Users only know a rough range for their birth time (like "morning"). They enter their birthday, birthplace, and time window, then go through guided Q&A to log major life events (marriage, moving, having kids, changing jobs). Dates can be filled in only to the month, season, year, or age. The app works out which minutes within the window have the most astrological "contacts" with those events, gives the reasoning for each event, and attaches a chart, with a choice of Whole Sign or Placidus house systems. (Google Play store page, 2026-11-06 read)

- Everything runs on the device, with no account and no upload. The core is a C++17 engine, with two native shells: SwiftUI on iOS and Jetpack Compose on Android. (omerfarukballi.com/work/retrace)

- Pricing: free for 1 cases and 4 events in total; Premium is a one-time purchase (up to 3 cases, unlimited events, PDF reports, a sensitivity page, etc.); Pro is a one-time purchase (unlimited cases + weight / tolerance settings). No subscription. In-app purchases on Play cost $2.99–$9.99; an iOS user review in Turkey mentions "249 TL". (Play store page; App Store Turkey reviews 2026-10-28)

- An unusually honest positioning: the store page states "We tested on cases with recorded birth times: the peaks are no better at pointing to the real birth time than random times, and the results page always says so." The developer's personal site says he tested 110 cases with recorded birth times. (Play store page; omerfarukballi.com/work/retrace)

- Developer: Ömer Faruk Ballı, Istanbul, Senior Data Engineer / AI-ML engineer (has done data migration work for Songkick). He also runs Sprout Way (infant development) and the web product kozmikatlas.com (free personalized daily astrology). (omerfarukballi.com; App Store developer page id1875248634; pinned post at x.com/omerryjane)
    - Note: a Turkish news story features a nurse with the same name, aged 26, in a 2025-year-old traffic death case. She is not the same person as this developer, and she can show up in search results by mistake.

- The bundle ID "cosmicplus": "cosmic" corresponds to his Kozmik Atlas, so it may have been split off from the same astrology project. Unverified.

### 2. Data: how far it actually got

| 2026-10-28 | Developer replied under posts on X to promote it; @kayratarot relayed it as an endorsement | x.com/kayratarot/status/2115543910499893711 |
| 2026-10-29 → 10-31 | Android installs have stayed at 17; charted only on Turkey's Tools Top Free (#182) and Top Grossing (#144) | Google Play library app_snap / chart_rank |
| 2026-11-01 | Android installs 17 → 1,435 (+1,418) | googleplay library |
| 2026-11-02 | 2,190(+755) | googleplay library |
| 2026-11-03–04 | 2,217, barely moving | googleplay library |
| 2026-11-01 | Best iOS Turkey category Top Grossing rank was #70; it later slid to #135, then #196 | appstore library app_day |
| 2026-11-06 | iOS Turkey store: 44 ratings, average 3.89; both stores combined 43 ratings, 3.9 (AppInsider) | iTunes lookup;AppInsider |

How we read this data:

- The main battlefield is **Turkey** . Play has only charted on Turkey's Tools chart; iOS has also only charted in Turkey. The store listing supports 50 languages, but so far we see no volume from any other country.

- The Android "+1,418 in one day" most likely didn't come in a single day. Play's install counts update with a lag, and it has been sitting on Turkey's Tools Top Grossing chart (#125–149) the whole time, which means people were installing and paying during 10/29–10/31 even though the number didn't move. The more plausible explanation is that the word-of-mouth wave from late October got recorded on Android all at once. We found no evidence for the "small-scale paid acquisition / test spend" suggested in the recall reasoning (see section 4).

- Money: Play Turkey Tools Top Grossing #125–149, iOS Turkey category Top Grossing best #70. Both thresholds are low, which corresponds to roughly a few to a few dozen sales a day (inference, unverified).

### 3. Competitors

| Name | Where | Launched | Scale | How it differs from Retrace |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Astro-Seek birth time rectification calculator (primary directions) | Web | Years | A large free astrology site | Free and feature-rich, but the interface is built for experts (primary directions, manual timing); no guided Q&A, and not a mobile app |
| astro-app.net Rectification | Web | Years | Recommended on Reddit | Free web tool that requires knowing the parameters; Retrace is a step-by-step Q&A where dates can be fuzzy |
| AskSoma Birth Time Finder | Web (AI) | 2025–26 | Not verified | Uses AI to claim "accuracy"; Retrace openly says it's "no better than random" |
| VedAstro Birth Time Finder | Web / open source | Years | An open-source Vedic astrology project | Vedic system, AI marketing; Retrace is Western astrology and runs offline on-device |
| ClickAstro, kpstellarastro and other Indian-system rectification calculators | Web | Years | Indian market | KP / Vedic systems; not aimed at Turkey |
| Rectification modules in Solar Fire, Janus, Sirius | Desktop software | Decades | Used by professional astrologers | Professional software costing hundreds of dollars; Retrace sells for around 249 TL as a one-time purchase, aimed at general users |
| Human astrologers doing rektifikasyon (armut.com lists 40+ consultants) | Offline / online services | Always present | Turkey has a mature market for these services | A single consultation costs hundreds to thousands of TL and needs booking; Retrace returns a result on the spot. Several good reviews compare it directly with results from an astrologer rectification ("only 5 minutes off", "2–3 minutes off") |
| e-Devlet / CİMER requests for birth time records | Government channel (Turkey) | — | Tutorial videos are big on TikTok (@ozancankubilay about 400k views, @tuanayucel about 1.5M views) | People who can get an official record don't need Retrace; it serves the group whose official record is also missing or unreliable (the related video titles literally say "birth times I got from e-Devlet are mostly wrong") |
| Asking ChatGPT for a birth time | Big-company features | 2024– | Turkish TikTok / Instagram tutorials | Free, but no ephemeris calculation, so results can't be checked |
| Mainstream astrology apps (Co-Star, The Pattern, the Turkish-local Merkür, etc.) | iOS / Android | Years | tens of millions | All require you to already know your birth time; none offer a dedicated rectification tool. Merkür has only published explainer articles about rectification |

Takeaway: "birth time rectification" has long been done, but previously it was either professional desktop software, web tools aimed at experts, or paying an astrologer. Search these terms in the two phone stores and you'll find **almost no native app that does this specifically for ordinary people** . Our Play library search for "birth time / rectification" returns only this one app as a dedicated rectification tool (googleplay library, 2026-11-06).

### 4. Where users come from

| Channel | Evidence | Confirmed? |
|---|---|---|
| On X (Turkish astrology Twitter), the developer personally replied under other people's posts with the link | @omerryjane (1,261 posts) replied under @kayratarot's post: "I built an rektifikasyon app that calculates birth time down to the minute, available on Google Play and iPhone," with an App Store link. @kayratarot replied with praise, "a very successful app for people who don't know their birth time… proud of work like this," and said he is also looking into the developer's other app (2026-10-28) | Confirmed |
| Endorsement and word of mouth from astrology accounts / small KOLs | In the same reply thread, a user said they downloaded and tried it (@artemissionn, saying it wasn't accurate); on the iOS Turkey store, 10/25–10/27 reviews cluster together, several comparing it with results from an astrologer rectification | Confirmed (scale unverified) |

| Store search / organic traffic after charting | After reaching #9 on Turkey's iOS Top Free overall, the Turkey overall and category charts generate exposure on their own | Inferred |
| TikTok | Searching for Retrace or Turkish terms like "birth time" found no videos promoting it; we only see a lot of need-driven videos on "how to recover your birth time" | None found |
| Media, Product Hunt | Submitted to Product Hunt by the developer, 1 upvotes, 0 comments, #150 of the day (hunted.space); no media coverage | Confirmed not applicable |
| Paid acquisition | No evidence of ad spend found; our ad library only tracks products on our watchlist | Not verified |

### 5. Why it charted

1. **Demand is especially dense in Turkey** : astrology is popular there and people talk about their "rising sign (yükselen)," which requires knowing your birth time. Many people only have an approximate birth time, or the e-Devlet record isn't trustworthy. "How to recover your birth time" TikTok videos routinely get hundreds of thousands to over a million views (@tuanayucel about 1.5M, @simgik55 about 550k, @ozancankubilay about 400k).

2. **The existing options are either expensive or hard** : paying an astrologer for rectification costs money and time; web tools like Astro-Seek have a high barrier to entry. Retrace turns the process into a guided phone Q&A, accepts fuzzy dates, and gives you a "closest minute" on the spot.

3. **The channel is the developer's own community** : the developer was already active in Turkish astrology Twitter and replied directly under astrology accounts' posts, earning public praise from one. The circle is small and sticky, so one endorsement can push a utility app into the top ten of Turkey's iOS Top Free overall (Turkey's charting threshold is much lower than the US's).

4. **The "it got my time right" experience spreads by itself** : nearly all the good reviews say "it calculated the minute" or "only 5 minutes off from the astrologer." Even though the developer admits accuracy is no better than random, users who get a result that feels "right" screenshot it and post about it in comment sections.

5. **Monetization is direct** : the free version gives only 4 events, which is just short of enough; adding more events requires a one-time purchase of about 249 TL. The negative reviews cluster on this point ("4 events isn't enough", "everything costs money"), but it is what keeps the app on Turkey's Top Grossing chart.

### 6. Differentiation, and whether that's why it took off

- In terms of category: **a phone app for birth time rectification aimed at ordinary people** , an almost empty slot in the stores. This is the main reason it has broken out, since anyone searching for this need can only find it.

- Experience: guided recall of life milestones, fuzzy dates allowed, works offline on-device, no sign-up, one-time purchase. The low barrier is why people call it "easy to use".

- Positioning: it openly says "peak accuracy is no better than random". That's the one thing that sets it apart, but **it isn't why** it took off. Turkish reviewers almost never mention that line; they treat it as "the tool that worked out my birth time". The disclaimer reads more like the developer dodging store review and refund risk while keeping personal integrity.

- Channel: the developer is part of the niche himself (data engineer + astrology hobbyist), which matters more than the product difference.

### 7. Visibility and copycats

- Visibility: **buzzing inside a small circle** , only dozens of Turkish astrology tweets and iOS Turkey reviews. No press coverage, no public revenue, Product Hunt 1 votes, and nothing in our X corpus (x-radar).

- Copycats: none found. Someone sells a "birth time correction API" (astrology-api.io), so there's demand to bake this into an app, but no mobile app of the same kind yet.

### 8. What others can borrow

- In high-traffic astrology markets (Turkey, Brazil, India, Mexico), pick one calculation step that only professional astrologers do but ordinary people really want (birth time correction, solar/lunar returns, electional timing), build it as a guided phone tool in the local language, sold as a one-time purchase.

- Cold start without paid acquisition: reply under local astrology KOLs' posts and offer them a free trial. One endorsement is enough to crack the top ten of a small country's overall chart.

- The free quota sits right where users feel the "aha" but can't finish, e.g. 4 events. The cost is bad reviews, so have refunds and redemption codes ready (the 1.0.4 version added a "redeem code" button).

- Writing the limits of accuracy into the product lowers review and backlash risk, but don't expect it to sell.

### 9. Still unclear

- The Android 11-01 jump of +1,418: was it a backfilled counter, or real ads or promotion that day? No direct evidence either way.

- Whether the "ads on X and other platforms" mentioned in the 1-star reviews were actually paid.

- Volume outside Turkey: it claims support for 50 languages, but no other country's charts show it.

- Staying power: after 11-03 Android installs barely moved, and the iOS Turkey Top Grossing rank slid from 70 to 196. It looks more like a short burst than steady growth.

- Actual revenue: not verified.
