"AI Cleaner," 1.94M installs in three months: a solo developer from Hanoi, four utility apps, the same paid-acquisition template

What it is An Android phone cleaner app. It finds duplicate, similar and blurry photos and large videos, then deletes or compresses them. Free to use, earning from ads and a few in-app purchases.

Why it blew up Not because the product is great, but because of the playbook: copy the photo-cleaner format already proven on iOS, use the generic name "AI Cleaner" to ride search, concentrate paid acquisition in countries where installs are cheap like India and Thailand. On Sep 10 it reportedly pulled about 500k installs in a single day, then came in staged pulses.

CHow you could follow Don't build the Nth cleaner app. Learn from its factory approach: run several evergreen utilities at once, share code, ad placements and paid-acquisition templates, test with small budgets in cheap countries, and keep whichever one the ads can pay back.

C grade: the factory approach is worth learning, but the cleaning category is already crowded (Codeway, iKame and a batch of newer look-alikes are all growing faster), and it's itself a follower living on thin margins from paid acquisition and ads. Following it isn't very profitable. Few people know about it

A solo developer in suburban Hanoi, Vietnam, started listing one utility app after another on Google Play from July this year: location, file recovery, PDF, and phone cleaning. Across four months they add up to nearly 5M installs. The largest, AI Cleaner, hit 1.94M installs 87 days after launch, mostly from India and Thailand. It has nothing new on the product side. What's worth watching is the playbook: copy the format validated on iOS, take a generic name, buy installs in cheap countries, and let ads pay it back.

"Nice, but why does it still say storage is full?"

In 2026 August 29, on AI Cleaner's 18nd day after launch, an Indian user named Vijeyan G left a review on Google Play: "nice, but y showing storage full." Nice, but why is it still showing storage full? 371 people marked it helpful.

That one line is nearly the whole demand for this category. A low-end Android phone with 64GB or even 32GB, the camera roll stuffed with images and short videos forwarded on WhatsApp, and the system nagging "storage almost full" every day. The user searches "cleaner" in the store, installs one, cleans once, and a few weeks later it's full again, so they install another.

The next two reviews at the top of the section are also telling. One from September 4 says "this app is okay … but ads are very nice and good design," and 973 people marked it helpful. A vague comment getting that many upvotes doesn't look organic (inferred). The other, from September 12, reads "too bad not getting install prompting for many things," complaining about prompts to install other apps everywhere in the app. Ads and cross-promotion are how it makes money.

What it is

A photo and video cleaner: it finds duplicate photos, similar photos, blurry photos and screenshots, finds large videos and short videos, then deletes or compresses them. The store description repeatedly stresses that "everything is done on your phone." The features are nearly identical to iOS's long-running cleaners Cleanup and AI Cleaner (GRIMLAX), and to Codeway's Cleanup on Android. The "AI" in the name is just a name.

The store page lists "Contains ads" and "In-app purchases," with one in-app item priced at $6.99–14.99. The US page rating is 4.4 stars, and the India page is 3.8 stars (Google Play, 11-06).

How it took off

The shape of the curve says more than any explanation. According to third-party estimates (AppstoreSpy), it launched in 11 August and had only around 20,000 installs by early September. On 10 September it added roughly 500k in one day (estimated), then ran at 10,000 to 50,000 a day, with another 90k burst on 18 October. Google Play installs over the most recent week come in discrete steps: 10-31 +68k, 11-03 +139k, 11-05 +31k, 11-06 +34k, for a weekly total of +270k, bringing the cumulative to 1,939,742 (Google Play installs, 11-06).

A 500k step from a flat base followed by stepped bursts looks like concentrated buying, not word of mouth (inferred). Whether the spend went to Google App Ads or an ad network, and how much, can't be seen from outside. Meta's ad library has no record of it, and searching its name on TikTok returns videos about iOS cleaners. The ratings also fit: 1.94M installs have only about 3 thousand ratings, a ratio of 0.15%, which is low. The star distribution is 0 at two stars, and the shape looks unnatural.

It only stays on two charts: Thailand's Free Tools chart (best rank #33, 11-01) and India's Free Tools chart (#82–#195). It occasionally surfaces around #190 on the tools charts in Germany, Japan and Singapore. It has never entered any grossing chart. YouTube has Hindi tutorials ("Ai cleaner phone cleanup app kaise use kare"), so it's clear who the users are.

Where the money comes from

Mostly ads. Third-party estimates put its October in-app revenue at under $5,000, with 12–560k downloads that month (AppGazers). Ad revenue isn't included in that figure. For a free utility pushing volume in India and Thailand, interstitials and banners are the main income, and in-app purchases are just a bonus.

Its "website" is a placeholder domain that exists only to host app-ads.txt. The privacy policy sits on free Google Sites, and the support email is a Gmail address. This is the standard setup for an ad-monetized publisher: the app is itself the ad inventory, and the website only exists so ad platforms can verify it.

What one install is worth and whether it pays back can't be calculated from outside. What is visible is that the same developer hasn't stopped, and keeps launching one new app after another.

Source: Google Play installs, 11-06. A QR scanner, an IPTV player and VibeReply are also in the lineup, and they're still small.

All four are evergreen utility categories where someone is always searching. All launched after July, and their curves all show the same kind of single-day bursts of tens to hundreds of thousands (File Recovery in October 12, with 13 days each adding roughly +110k; PDF Reader in October 21 +90k, estimated). One account, one code base, one acquisition template: four months stacked up to nearly 5M installs. Vietnam already has a whole group of teams making utility apps this way. This one is just a newer, smaller member of that group.

Who it's competing with

Everyone. On the same day, dozens of cleaning apps were growing quickly on Google Play, and it sits in the middle of the pack:

Further out, Google Photos' "free up space" and Files by Google's duplicate-file cleaning are free built-in alternatives. Even the name is borrowed. "AI Cleaner" is already taken on iOS by GRIMLAX and on Android by iKame, and this app takes the same name to capture the same search term.

Few people know about it. There's no disclosed revenue, no media, X or Reddit discussion, and it only appears in a few app data sites. But that matters little to anyone who wants to follow it: it's itself a copycat, and the category is already crowded.

If it were you

Verdict: Don't build the Nth "AI Cleaner." What's worth learning is the factory approach behind it: pick evergreen utility categories, run several apps from one account at once, push volume in cheap countries with the same acquisition template, let ads pay it back, and spend more on whichever one actually scales.

Who it's for: Teams of 1–3 who have run Google App Campaigns (UAC) or ad networks, can work out the cost of one install against how many ads one user will see, have a tools app base and AdMob/mediation experience, and can ship one app a month.

Who it's not for: Anyone who won't run paid ads and is counting on organic store traffic (this category's organic traffic was split up long ago by dozens of paid-acquisition players); anyone who wants a product with good reviews and subscription revenue built slowly (users of this playbook uninstall within three weeks); anyone who cares about reviews full of "all ads" complaints.

How to do it: Cleaning is just one slot. Following its mix, pick 4–5 categories that "low-end phone users use every day" (cleaners, file recovery, PDF, QR scanners, location trackers, video players), share one codebase, one ad placement setup and one attribution setup, launch them together with small test budgets, and within one to two weeks check each one's install cost against ad revenue. Keep the ones that pay back. Copy feature formats already validated on iOS (similar-photo grouping, video compression), and name apps with generic terms users actually search for.

How to get users: Mainly Google App Campaigns, starting in countries where installs are cheap: India, Thailand, Indonesia, Vietnam. Stuff store titles and descriptions with search terms. Send traffic from inside the app to the developer's other apps, so one user cycles through your portfolio. Watch the reviews closely: if cross-promotion and ads get too aggressive, the rating drops below 3 stars or more, and store conversion falls with it. Its India store is already at 3.8.

Is there a deadline? No. This is steady demand, so the window isn't about timing. It's about whether you can push install cost below ad revenue. If Google Play tightens its ad and cross-promotion policies, the door narrows.

What would mean I've got it wrong? ① Over the next month or two OneTap Tools stops releasing new apps and the pulse from its existing ones stalls, which would suggest paid acquisition at this scale doesn't pay, and small studios have lost money on it since 2026 year(s). ② The opposite: it keeps launching a new app every month and new apps quickly pass a million installs, which would suggest the template still works and is worth copying seriously. ③ Google Play cracks down harder on interstitial ads or "install-baiting" tactics, and these apps get pulled or drop in rating in batches.

Why AI Cleaner: Phone Cleanup (com.onetap.cleaner.storage.ai) took off

Google Play · Developer OneTap Tools (individual developer NGUYEN NGOC KHUE, Hanoi, Vietnam) · Launched 2026-08-11 · Research day 2026-11-06

Bottom line

This isn't an app that succeeded on its product. It's a standard product from a Vietnamese tools-app factory: it takes the iOS-validated "photo dedupe / video compression" cleaner type, gives it a generic name, moves it to Android, pushes it in waves with Google paid acquisition (UAC / ad networks), and recovers costs through in-app ads plus $6.99–14.99 in-app purchases. Its users are mostly in low-ARPU markets such as India and Thailand. Differentiation is basically zero. What made it work is the distribution playbook, and the same developer used that same playbook to launch three more tools apps with million-plus installs within three to four months.

1. Data: the shape of its rise

  • Cumulative installs 1,939,742, +7 over the last 271,326 days (googleplay library app_profile, 2026-11-06). 2,961 ratings, about +40–60 per day.
  • Growth curve since launch (googleplay library app_day_ext, AppstoreSpy estimates): 9-02 about 19k → 9-10 single-day +497k (9-09's 101k jumps to 9-10's 598k) → 9-11 another +79k → then 1–50k per day, and 10-18 another +90k pulse, and 11-03 +139k over two days. This "500k step from flat, then stepped pulses" shape is typical of concentrated paid spend (or a one-off large traffic source), not organic word of mouth.
  • The app only consistently appears in the Tools free charts in Thailand (best #33, 11-01) and India (#82–195). It occasionally shows up near #190 in the Tools charts in Germany, Japan and Singapore (googleplay library chart_rank, since 10-29). It has never entered any grossing chart.
  • Rating-to-install ratio is about 0.15%, which is low. The US listing shows 4.36, and the India listing shows 3.8 (Play page gl=in, 2026-11-06). Rating histogram [355, 0, 118, 236, 2250], with 0 one-star reviews. The shape looks unnatural (googleplay library app_snap).
  • 收入:AppGazers 模型估 2026-10 内购 < $5K,下载 12–56 万(appgazers.com/reports/apps/android-com.onetap.cleaner.storage.ai)。页面标注「Contains ads」,广告收入不在估算里——对这类工具,广告才是主要变现。

2. Developer: a Vietnamese tools factory

  • Play page "About the developer": NGUYEN NGOC KHUE, Soc Son, Ha Noi, Vietnam. Support email [email protected]. All were launched after 2026-07, all in "evergreen tools categories" (location, file recovery, PDF, cleaning, QR scanning).
  • Sister apps show the same single-day 4–110k pulse curves (app_day_ext: File Recovery 10-12/13 each +110k, PDF Reader 10-21 +92k, GPS Tracker 8-17 +76k). The same playbook is being copied.

3. Competitors: extremely crowded

Dozens of cleaning apps have been among the fastest-growing on Play over the last 7 days in the library (googleplay library app_profile, 2026-11-06). AI Cleaner only ranks in the middle:

  • Codeway "Cleanup: Phone Storage Cleaner": 36.5M installs, 7-day +960k, #1 Tools Top Grossing in the UAE. It's the Android version of the iOS hit Cleanup and the benchmark for this category.
  • Brain Trust "Phone Cleaner - AI Cleaner": 102M installs, launched 2023 year(s) ago.
  • iKame/Begamob "AI Cleaner: Clean up Storage": 11M installs, launched 2026-03, #3 Tools Top Grossing in Argentina. Almost the same name, and also a Vietnamese publisher.
  • TapSuite "CleanX" 4M, Shlag "Clean Manager" 9.25M, JTR Labs "Hyper Cleaner" (launched 10-09, 28-day 977k, 7-day +810k), BleymarStudio "Clean Pro - AI Cleaner" (launched 9-24, 7-day +650k), Markcon "AI Clean Up" (launched 9-04, 1.77M), and others.
  • iOS prototypes: Cleanup (DEEP FLOW, 2.02B rating), AI Cleaner: Clean Up Storage (GRIMLAX, 2.02B rating), Cleaner Guru (2019) (appstore library).
  • Big-company features: Google Photos' "Free up space" and Files by Google's duplicate and large-file cleanup are free system-level alternatives.

5. Why it took off

  1. The category itself is evergreen, high-demand: storage full warnings are a constant pain point on low-end Android phones (India, Southeast Asia), and cleaners are a category people always search for and download on Play.
  2. Copy an iOS-validated product format: switch from "junk cleaning / speed boosting" to iOS-style "duplicate photos, similar photos, blurry photos, screenshots, video compression", add the word "AI", and follow the same route as Codeway's Cleanup on Android.
  3. Ad-arbitrage factory: one developer ships 4 utility apps at once, each hitting 77–1.94M installs within a few months. Installs are cheap in low-ARPU markets, and interstitial/banner ads plus a few $6.99–14.99 in-app purchases pay it back.
  4. Name-jacking: naming it "AI Cleaner" to catch searches aimed at the big brands.

6. Differentiation

Almost none. The feature set (duplicate/similar/blurry photos, short videos, compression, on-device processing) matches dozens of products like Codeway Cleanup and iKame AI Cleaner. "AI" is just the name. It took off because of execution, not differentiation: fast launches, paid acquisition, many apps in parallel, and cheap markets.

7. Visibility and copycats

  • Revenue is not public, and no media outlet or big X account has written about it. It only shows up on data sites like AppBrain, Similarweb, and AppGazers. → Few people know about it yet, but the category is already crowded.
  • Copycats: this category was already full of people building in it. Newer look-alikes after 2026-09 include JTR Labs Hyper Cleaner / Smart Clean Pro, BleymarStudio Clean Pro, Luvasa Distro Phone Clean Fix (listed 10-22, 15 days to 278k), and Markcon AI Clean Up, all growing faster than it.

8. What to borrow

  • A subscription-style utility (photo cleaning) already validated on iOS can be ported as-is to low-priced Android markets, monetized with ads plus in-app purchases.
  • A matrix of "one developer account + a batch of evergreen utilities + one paid-acquisition template" keeps the cost of any single app failing low.
  • Name apps with generic terms (AI Cleaner, PDF Reader, File Recovery) to capture store search directly.

9. Uncertain

  • Paid acquisition channels and spend aren't directly visible (the Google ads library doesn't cover this one, and the Google Ads Transparency Center hasn't been checked by hand). It's impossible to tell whether 9-10's +500k comes from paid ads, a Play featured slot, or a jump in AppstoreSpy data.
  • Ad revenue and whether it pays back are unknown. AppGazers only estimates in-app purchases (< $5K/month).
  • Around 9-10, some days in app_day_ext are averaged values, so don't take single-day numbers at face value.
  • The two-star share in the rating histogram is 0. Whether reviews were solicited has not been verified.
