# "I'm 87 years old and you're manipulating me": a PDF reader rockets up the Tools charts, behind it 17 clone apps

**What it is** A PDF/document reader on Google Play that makes its money only from ads. It does the standard things: viewing, converting, scanning.

**Why it took off** It's one of 17 clone apps built on the same template. Paid acquisition runs in waves (likely misleading "can't open PDF, please update" ads aimed at older users), which pushes it up the Tools charts in low-barrier markets like Canada and Japan, then it picks up a bit of organic traffic from chart placement and search.

**D** **How you could follow it** Not recommended. Only two things are worth borrowing: small-country tool charts have low entry barriers and organic traffic after charting; high-intent generic keywords like "PDF Reader" can pay back on ads alone. If you do build it, go the opposite way: a clean reader with no fake prompts, and you'll be competing with Adobe, WPS and the built-in system readers.

Grade D: no product differentiation. Growth comes from multi-account clones and likely misleading ads, which breaks Play policy and risks batch takedowns and account bans (the similar Trapdoor operation had 455 packages wiped in one sweep). The playbook has been widely exposed in security circles, and the category is crowded with similar matrices, so an indie dev has no place to follow in. Few people know about this yet

PDF Master Pro & Doc Reader has been live for three and a half months, with 770k installs. In early November it climbed into the top 20 of the Tools free chart in Canada and Japan on Google Play. None of its features are new. What got it there is something else: one listing template, 17 developer accounts rotating through paid traffic, and likely "your PDF reader needs an update" fake-prompt ads. This piece lays out how it runs, and why indie devs shouldn't follow it.

### An "Update" button that goes nowhere

2026 年 10 月 21 日,一位英国用户给 Google Play 上一个叫 PDF File Plus 的 App 打了一星,只写了一句:「I am 87 years old and you are manipulating me.」(我 87 岁了,你们在操纵我。)同一天还有人写:「I keep pressing the update button and it doesn't respond......hello......」(我一直按更新,它没反应……喂……)

再往前翻,10 月 16 日一条有 15 人点「有用」的评论:「I didn't ask for this. I couldn't watch a video unless I (was forced to) installed it.」(我没要装这个,不装就看不了视频。)10 月 11 日:「489 notifications in 24 hours?」(24 小时 489 条通知?)10 月 1 日:「what is a PDF and why do I need it I'm 72」(PDF 是什么,我为什么需要它,我 72 岁了。)

PDF File Plus isn't the focus here, but it launched on the same day as PDF Master Pro (Jul 23), with the same listing opener "📄 Document Reader – PDF Viewer & PDF Tools", the same features, and the same page layout. Only the name and developer account differ. PDF Master Pro itself has few reviews, so its sister apps are the best window into how its users arrive.

### How big it is

| items | Numbers | Sources |
|---|---|---|
| Total installs | 773,641 | Google Play,11-06 |
| New in the last 7 days | 78,258 | Same as above |
| Score | 1,063 reviews, 4.0 stars | Same as above |
| Rating / installs | 0.14% | calculated |
| Utilities free chart | Canada 52 → 18, Japan 42 → 19, US 11-02 only charted (185), 11-06 to 39 | 10-29 → 11-06 |
| Monetization | Labeled "contains ads", no in-app purchases | Store page |
| Last update | Aug 24, version 1.0.8 | Same as above |

Two numbers stand out. First, the rating count is only 1.4 per thousand installs. A normal tool app gets far more, which means many people installed it and never opened it. Second, in early November almost all new ratings were 5-star, and the count of 1-star ratings dropped from 172 to 153. Whether that's prompted good reviews or bad ones being removed is unclear (unverified).

### Installs are switched on and off

Plotting the install curve since launch (third-party estimates), the shape tells the story:

- Before Aug 15: a few hundred a day;

- Aug 15 to Sep 15: rose from 2.6k to 556k in a month, peaking at about 69k in a single day;

- Sep 18 to Oct 21: almost flat, only about 70k added in a month;

- From Oct 22 it surged again, about 10k a day, with 6 Nov hitting 18.6k in one day.

Organic growth doesn't look like this. Surge, stall, surge again: that's paid campaigns switching on and off. In the stall month, a few hundred to a thousand installs a day remained, probably organic traffic picked up from chart placement and from search for the generic term "PDF Reader" **(inferred)** . In Canadian and Japanese Tools charts the bar is low; 10,000 to 20,000 installs a day is enough to reach the top 20.

Where it was advertised and how much was spent can't be found from outside: searching the developer, package name, and both domains in the Google, Meta, and TikTok ad libraries returns nothing. But how apps like this run has already been documented:

### "Unable to read file. Try updating your PDF application"

In November 2025, an Android Authority writer described his father's phone: every time he opened a PDF, a WPS splash screen popped up an ad disguised as a system message, "Unable to read file. Try updating your PDF application." Tapping it led to one near-identical PDF app after another. Reddit and Google support forums have similar threads: "YouTube pops up 'PDF expired'" and "my aunt was tricked by a YouTube ad into installing a PDF editor."

In May 2026, security firm HUMAN disclosed an operation called Trapdoor: 455 apps, mostly PDF readers and cleaners, with 24M installs in total. The play was a fake "your version has expired" update prompt that pushed users to install a second companion app, which then ran ads in the background. It also checked where users came from: organic installs never saw the scheme, and only paid-acquisition users were targeted. Google removed 455 packages in one go.

The batch PDF Master Pro belongs to launched between 6 and August, after Trapdoor was removed. The sister-app reviews ("keeps making me press Update", "can't watch a video unless I install it", "24 notifications in 489 hours") match the funnel above. **But whether this package itself does anything malicious hasn't been verified by unpacking the APK. We can only say the pattern is consistent (inferred).**

### It's one cell in a matrix

Searching Google Play for the opening line of that listing turns up 17 packages, launched one after another between Jun 8 and Aug 10, with about 16.3M installs in total. PDF Master Pro's 770k is mid-range among them:

| Launched | Name (package suffix) | Developer account | Installs (11-06) |
|---|---|---|---|
| 06-15 | PDF Pro(adgeress) | FENGMAIJI | 989k |
| 07-10 | PDF Reader Pro(plusybq) | Kumpulan Ramuan Herbal | 1.23M |
| 07-13 | Smart PDF(qvcber) | HOSENR DEV | 1.38M |
| 07-20 | PDF Jumper(sukter) | Vialle; | 1.74M |
| 07-23 | PDF File Plus | DBR Soft Inc. | 937k |
| **07-23** | **PDF Master Pro(qvzmk)** | **Tural Abbasbayli** | **774k** |
| 08-04 | PDF Element(bftop) | devssss 00003 | 2.53M |
| 08-10 | PDF Hero(avtlo) | AGX Developer | 1.54M |

(Only 8 listed; the other 9 are between 210k and 850k.)

The pattern is uniform: package names end in random letter strings; each package has its own one-off domain, with privacy policies at paths like `xxxapp.net/privacy/`; contact emails are Gmail; developer names don't match the business. "Kumpulan Ramuan Herbal" is Indonesian for "herbal recipe collection"; others include "JK Breaking News" and "BRISTOLS BOWWOW HOUSE LLC." The PDF Master Pro account, Tural Abbasbayli, matches a LinkedIn profile of an auto electrician in Nakhchivan, Azerbaijan; this account also previously published an app called "Thanos Snap!". The accounts look bought or rented **(inferred)** . The official site pdfexpertapp.com returns 404, yet the privacy policy sits on a different domain, pdfmasterpro.net.

The logic is risk spreading: if one account is banned or one package pulled, the next one takes over the spend. After September, new packages kept coming. HOSENR DEV, for example, launched another one in Sep 29, growing 280k in a week.

### Who it's competing with

Everyone. Google Play has 560 apps with PDF or Document Reader in the name, 225 of them launched after May 2026. In the US Tools free chart's top 200, 18 to 21 PDF apps appear on any given day. At the top are Adobe Acrobat (945M installs), WPS (832M), and Easy PDF (433M). Below them are ad-driven clones launched in 2025 that have lasted over a year, with ten to thirty-some million installs. The biggest competitor is the phone itself: Files by Google and Chrome can open PDFs directly, so most people who'd install one of these apps probably don't need one.

### If it were you

**Verdict:** Don't follow it. It has no product, only distribution. That distribution runs on multi-account clones and likely misleading ads, two things Google is actively cracking down on.

**Who it suits:** Honestly, there's no version of this that suits an indie dev. The only ones who can run it are teams with a stock of developer accounts, a clone-production pipeline, the ability to buy traffic at scale in high-eCPM countries, and the acceptance that whole batches can be pulled at any time. Some of them are already doing it.

**Who it doesn't suit:** Anyone who cares about account safety, anyone with only one developer account, anyone who doesn't want a 87-year-old cursing them in the reviews. Google Play's duplicate-content and linked-account policies can get every related account banned once a violation is found.

**If you want to take anything from it:**

- Small Tools charts in places like Canada and Japan have low barriers: 10,000 to 20,000 daily installs can reach the top 20, and after that you can pick up a stretch of organic traffic from chart placement and search. This holds for legitimate tool apps' cold starts too.

- A generic need term like "PDF Reader" can pay back ad-only monetization, which shows both demand and ad value are there. If you want to build here, go the other way: a clean reader with no fake prompts, aimed at people who aren't comfortable with their phones, with store copy that literally says "no fake update prompts, no notification spam." But you'd be up against Adobe, WPS, and the built-in system apps, so acquisition costs won't be cheap.

- You can use it as a negative example when picking products: install curves that jump in waves, a rating rate as low as one per thousand installs, versions unupdated for months, and the same listing copy sitting under a string of different accounts. If all four hold, it's a matrix paid-acquisition package, and not worth researching further.

**On timing:** There's no window. How long a matrix like this lasts depends on when Google's next cleanup comes, not on you.

**What it would mean if I've misread it:** If most of these 17 packages are still listed, still being updated, and the "Update" and "scam" reviews drop off by next year, they may be legitimate ad tools that just run aggressive campaigns. That would make it an ordinary business built on a high-demand keyword, ad monetization, and charting in small-country stores, and it could be re-graded as C. Conversely, if they disappear in batches within a month or two, that confirms they're part of the same operation as Trapdoor.

Competitors

| Name | Where | Launched | Scale | How it differs from this one |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Adobe Acrobat Reader | Android | 2010 | 945M installs, 1.51M added per week (Google Play library) | Has a real brand, real features and subscription revenue; this app only has basic features and monetizes through ads |
| WPS Office | Android | 2011 | 832M installs, +2.15M weekly | Full office suite, preinstalled on many phones; its splash-screen ad slot is itself used to run "update your PDF app" ads (Android Authority) |
| PDF Reader - Easy PDF(QR Code Scanner.) | Android | 2022-01 | 433M installs, +1.85M weekly | An established utility portfolio with long-held accounts and brand, hundreds of times larger in scale |
| PDF ProX, Readdock, Lumio PDF Reader and other similar apps listed 2025 years ago | Android | 2025 | 10M–33M installs | Also an ad-monetized utility, but it has lasted longer and keeps shipping versions; this app hasn't been updated since August |
| Sister packages on the same template (PDF Element, PDF Hero, PDF Jumper, PDF File Plus and 16 others) | Android | 2026-06 to 08 | The 17 packages total about 16.3M installs | Almost no difference: same description, same privacy-policy URL format, only the name and account changed |
| Files by Google / Chrome's built-in PDF viewer / the system file manager | Big-company features | — | Preinstalled | Free and nothing extra to install; users of this kind of app mostly didn't need another one |

Where users come from

- Inferred **paid acquisition / ad-driven installs** : the install curve surges, stalls and surges again (8-15 to 9-15 up 550k, then nearly zero for a month, then roughly 10k/day again from 10-22); rating rate is only 0.14%; not found in the googleads / metaads / tiktokads libraries (those only track listed products, so not finding it doesn't mean it wasn't advertised)

- Inferred **misleading "can't open PDF / please update" ads (aimed at older users)** : the sister package PDF File Plus, listed the same day on the same template, has UK reviews saying "I didn't want this app. I couldn't exit out of it", "I keep clicking on Update and you don't let me in", "I am 87 years old and you are manipulating me" (Google Play library reviews 10-19 to 10-30). Android Authority 2025-11 and HUMAN's Trapdoor report 2026-05 documented funnels like this. Not verified for this package itself

- **Verified** **multi-account sock-puppet portfolio** : 17 packages share one description template, listed one after another from 06-08 to 08-10, with random-letter package suffixes, privacy policies at paths like xxxapp.net/privacy/, Gmail contact addresses, and account names unrelated to the business (Kumpulan Ramuan Herbal, JK Breaking News, etc.)

- **Verified** **store search / small-country category charts** : heavy paid acquisition pushed it into the Canada and Japan Utilities top 20, the US top 40, and #72 on the Japan overall chart (chart_rank 11-06). Even through late September, when paid acquisition was paused, it still got a few hundred to a thousand installs a day, likely from chart and search traffic.

- Inferred **content / creators / social** : x-radar shows 90 posts in 0 days. No TikTok content for this app and no official website.

## Why PDF Master Pro & Doc Reader (com.pdfexpert.docre.qvzmk) got this far

> Channel: Google Play | Developer: Tural Abbasbayli (individual account) | Listed: 2026-07-23 | Research date: 2026-11-06

### Bottom line

This is not a PDF tool that won on product strength. It's one package in a **PDF reader sock-puppet portfolio** . From 2026-06 to August, the same template (same description, same privacy-policy domain format, random-letter package suffixes) was listed under at least 17 different developer accounts, about 16.3M installs in total. Users were mostly **bought or ad-driven** : installs come in waves, and sister packages listed the same day on the same template have reviews saying "I didn't want this", "keeps asking me to Update", and "I'm 87 years old and you're manipulating me". Money comes from in-app ads (marked "contains ads", no in-app purchases). It climbed the Canada, Japan and US utility charts on the speed of installs during the spend bursts, not because users went looking for it.

### 1. Data: where it stands now

Sources: Google Play library (app_snap / app_day / chart_rank, 2026-10-29 to 11-06); the curve since launch comes from app_day_ext (AppstoreSpy estimates).

- Cumulative installs 773,641 (11-06), +78,258 in the last 7 days; 1,063 ratings, 4.03 stars.

- **Rating count is only 0.14% of installs** , far below a normal utility. It looks like many people installed it and never opened it.

- Star distribution: 11-03 → 11-06:5 stars 562 → 633,1 stars 172 → 153. The 1-star count is actually shrinking, and nearly all new daily ratings are 5 stars. This could be incentivized praise, or negative reviews being removed (unverified).

- Version 1.0.8, no updates since Aug 24; **tagged "contains ads", no in-app purchases** (app_snap.offers_iap = False, ad_supported = True).

- The install curve is "surge, stall, surge" (AppstoreSpy estimates):
    - Before 8-15: a few hundred installs;
    - 8-15 → 9-15: a month climbing from 2.6k to 556k, peaking at about 69k/day in a single observation (9-03);
    - 9-18 → 10-21: nearly flat, a few hundred to just over a thousand a day (580k → 650k);
    - From 10-22 it surges again, about 10k a day, with a single-day gain of 11-06 +18,583. A switch-like curve like this is the classic shape of ads turned on and off; organic growth doesn't look like this.

- Charts (free / TOOLS): Canada 52 → 18 (10-29 → 11-06), Japan 42 → 19, the US 11-02 only entered the chart (185), and 11-06 has reached 39; Japan overall apps chart 72.

### 2. Competitors: who else is doing this

PDF / document readers are one of the most crowded categories on Google Play. The Google Play library has 560 apps with PDF or Document Reader in the name, 225 of them listed after 2026-05; the 197 apps listed within 150 days together gained 9.5M installs in 7 days. Each day, 18–21 PDF apps sit in the top 200 of the US utilities free chart.

| Competitors | Platform | Launched | Scale (googleplay library 11-06) | How it differs from this app |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Adobe Acrobat Reader | Android / iOS / desktop | 2010 | 945M installs, +1.51M weekly | Real brand and features, subscription-based; this app only has basic viewing and conversion and monetizes through ads |
| WPS Office | Android | 2011 | 832M, +2.15M weekly | Full office suite, many phones preinstall it; its splash-screen ad is itself one of the placements used for the fake "update your PDF" ads (Android Authority 2025-11) |
| PDF Reader - Easy PDF(QR Code Scanner.) | Android | 2022 | 433M, +1.85M weekly | Established utility portfolio, hundreds of times larger, with long-held accounts and brand |
| PDF ProX, Readdock, Lumio "PDF Reader: View All PDFs", and others | Android | 2025 | 10M–33M | Similar ad-monetized utility that has lasted longer and keeps shipping versions |
| **Sister packages on the same template (same portfolio)** | Android | 2026-06-08 to 08-10 | 17 packages total about 16.3M | Same description and privacy-policy path, only the name and account changed (see section 4) |
| Files by Google / the system file manager, Chrome's built-in PDF viewer | Big-company features | — | Preinstalled | Free and nothing extra to install; users of this kind of app mostly didn't need another one |

**Conclusion: zero differentiation.** The features are standard PDF-reader fare (view, convert, image-to-PDF, merge/split, scan), the description is a machine-translated template with AI rewriting, and the icon, screenshots and sister packages follow the same playbook.

### 3. Growth tactics: where users come from

- **Paid acquisition / ad-driven installs (highly likely, but our ad libraries didn't match)** :
    - The googleads, metaads and tiktokads libraries returned no match by developer name, package name, or the two domains (pdfexpertapp.com, pdfmasterpro.net). But those three libraries only track listed products, so not finding it doesn't mean it wasn't advertised.
    - The indirect evidence is strong: the install curve moves in waves; the rating rate is only 0.14%; and the sister package PDF File Plus (com.dbrsoft.pdf.file.plus), listed the same day on the same template, has UK reviews saying "I didn't want this app. I couldn't exit out of it", "I keep clicking on 'Update' and you don't let me in", "they want you to keep installing the same app", "I am 87 years old and you are manipulating me", and "Not interested. remove immediately" (Google Play library reviews, 10-19 to 10-30).

- **"Fake update / PDF won't open" malicious ad funnel (the mainstream approach in this category, not verified for this package)** :
    - Android Authority 2025-11-27: the author's father, every time he opened a PDF, got a WPS splash ad disguised as a system prompt, "Unable to read file. Try updating your PDF application", and tapping it led him to install one near-identical PDF app after another.
    - Google's support forums and Reddit also have threads like "YouTube pops up 'PDF expired', tap cancel and you're sent to Play to download a PDF app" and "my aunt was tricked by a YouTube ad into installing a PDF editor".
    - HUMAN Security 2026-05 disclosed the **Trapdoor** operation: 455 apps, mostly PDF readers and cleaners, about 24M installs in total. The apps first showed a fake "current version expired" update ad to push users into installing a second companion app; the second app used a hidden WebView to fire ad requests, peaking at 659M a day. It also used an attribution SDK to tell where installs came from: users who installed organically never saw the malicious behavior, which only triggered for users brought in by paid acquisition. Google has removed all of them.
    - This app's portfolio was listed in concentrated fashion only after Trapdoor was taken down (from 2026-06). The product form, the monetization, and the "Update loop" in the sister packages' reviews all match this playbook. **But we have not reverse-engineered whether this package has malicious behavior.**

- **Store search / charts** : "PDF Reader" is a big keyword on Play. Once the spend pushed it into the top 20–40 of the Canada, Japan and US utility charts, the charts and search brought in part of the organic volume. During the late-September pause it still gained several hundred to a thousand installs a day, probably from that.

- **Content / creators / social** : none. x-radar has no content for this app in 90 days; a TikTok search for "PDF Master Pro Doc Reader" only returns other apps with the same name; there is no official website (pdfexpertapp.com points to an empty S3 bucket, returning 404).

### 4. "The people copying it": it is itself a member of the portfolio

Searching the Google Play library for the description opening "📄 Document Reader – PDF Viewer & PDF Tools" matches 17 packages, listed one after another:

| 08-10 | com.pdfhero.dclor.avtlo | AGX Developer | 1.54M | pdfheroapp.com/privacy/ |

A few traits:

- **Account names unrelated to the business** : "Kumpulan Ramuan Herbal" (Indonesian, meaning "herbal recipe collection"), "JK Breaking News", "BRISTOLS BOWWOW HOUSE LLC", "devssss 00003". This app's account, Tural Abbasbayli, is listed on LinkedIn as an automotive electrician in Nakhchivan, Azerbaijan; on AppBrain this account previously also had a "Thanos Snap! - Clear & Store" listed. These look like purchased or rented developer accounts (inferred).

- **Random-suffix package names, one-off domains, Gmail contact addresses** (this app uses nesir.ta@gmail.com), and the official website domain (pdfexpertapp.com) doesn't match the privacy-policy domain (pdfmasterpro.net).

- The description is the same text rewritten by AI into different versions.

- New August/September packs may still be stacking up: HOSENR DEV's 9-29 has charted com.pilot.readdo.hosenr (510k, +280k a week), and in the same period Suffron's "PDF Pilot" (9-18) also came out. The naming all follows the pilot / readdo pattern, but the listing templates differ, so whether it's one team is unverified.

So the "copycat" angle flips here: **this app is itself a mass-copied clone** . The playbook is to spread risk across many accounts and rotate volume: when one pack gets pulled, the next one takes over the spend.

### 5. Why it charted

1. **Mass-produce knockoff packs on the biggest tool keywords and rotate volume between them** : 17 packs on the same template total about 16.3M installs, and this one is just a mid-sized member (googleplay library).

2. **Installs follow the ad spend switch, not retention or word of mouth** : the push-stop-push curve, a 0.14% rating rate, and no updates after August all say users aren't being kept by the product (googleplay library, AppstoreSpy estimates).

3. **Traffic probably comes from misleading "PDF won't open / please update" ads aimed at older users who aren't comfortable with phones** : evidence is reviews on sister packs (googleplay library), plus disclosures about this category from Android Authority and HUMAN Trapdoor.

4. **The chart bar is low** : in the Canada and Japan tools charts, 1–20k daily installs is enough to reach the top 20. Once charted, it also picks up some organic traffic from the charts and search (chart_rank).

5. **Timing** : after HUMAN and Google took down 455 of Trapdoor's packs in 2026-05, a gap opened up in the category. This matrix's launches clustered from 6 through August, which looks like a fresh batch filling that gap (inferred).

6. **Monetization** : ads only ("Contains ads," no in-app purchases). Paid acquisition in high-eCPM markets like the US, Canada, Japan, and Australia, with installed users getting hit by interstitial and app-open ads a few times, can cover the acquisition cost (inferred, amounts unknown).

### 6. Differentiation

**No product differentiation.** It does the same thing as hundreds of PDF readers, and even the listing is a template. It worked through **distribution and how it's organized** : batch accounts, batch packs, low-cost templated development, pushing the tools chart in high-eCPM countries, and quite possibly misleading ads for traffic. That "difference" is why it worked, but it isn't a user-facing differentiator, anyone can copy it, and the category is already full of the same thing.

### 7. What to borrow

- The neutral takeaways worth borrowing are:
    - Play's small category charts (Canada and Japan tools) have a low bar, so short bursts of volume can reach the top 20, then the charts and search bring organic traffic;
    - Generic-need keywords like "PDF Reader" can pay back on ads alone;
    - A switch-like install curve, very low ratings, and a version that's never updated are three signals for spotting matrix-bought packs, and worth filtering out when you pick opportunities.

- **Don't copy it** : multi-account knockoff matrices violate Play's duplicate-content and developer account policies, and misleading "fake update" ads are a priority target for Google, with risk of bulk takedowns and bans (Trapdoor had 455 packs wiped in one go). For a small team, this isn't a direction worth building.

### 8. Visibility

**Few people know this specific app** : no press coverage, 0 posts on X, no TikTok content, no public revenue, and no website. But its **playbook itself has been widely disclosed by security researchers and tech press** (HUMAN Trapdoor / SlopAds, Android Authority, Malwarebytes), and the category is already crowded with matrices like it.

### 9. Still unclear

- Whether this pack has Trapdoor-style malicious behavior, where an attribution SDK identifies the traffic source, shows a fake update only to paid-acquisition users, and pushes them to install a second pack: not verified, no APK reverse-engineering done.

- The specific paid acquisition channels (Google UAC, YouTube, programmatic DSPs, or ad slots inside other apps), plus spend and CPI: none of our ad libraries captured them.

- Whether the 17 packs come from one operating team: the listing template, privacy policy path, and launch cadence are highly consistent, but we have no corporate-registration or code-level evidence.

- The reasons for the 1-star rating drop (deleted reviews, appeals, or incentivized five-star reviews): unverified.

- This app's own review sample: not in the library. The reviews used to infer user experience come from sister pack PDF File Plus, launched the same day on the same template.
