Borrowed name "PDF Reader Pro," filed under an Indonesian herbal account: a PDF reader that got 780k installs in three weeks and goes to zero when spend stops

What it is An ad-only, ordinary Android PDF reader that borrows the name of the legit PDF Reader Pro. It's one of several knockoff packs where 17 accounts share one listing.

Why it grew Paid acquisition concentrated from early October to late October; about 780k installs in three weeks, and it climbed the charts in small countries like Jamaica and Nicaragua along the way. Its name matching the legit product also captured some brand-keyword search traffic.

DHow you could follow it Don't follow this category, and don't copy the name-borrowing or the multi-account matrix. Only two things are worth taking: use its signatures (the switch-shaped curve, a rating rate under 0.2%, mismatched accounts) to filter out fake hits, and test small budgets with your own legit tool in small countries to chase chart placement.

Grade D: growth came entirely from matrix buying, borrowed brand names, and an old borrowed account, with zero product differentiation and zero install retention once spend stops. What followers can copy is only the buying layer, and the PDF category is already full of hundreds of knockoff packs, plus Adobe, WPS, and built-in system features. The name-borrowing and knockoff packs also carry bulk takedown risk. Few people know it

PDF Reader Pro - Editor is an Android PDF reader that launched in Jul 10. By Nov 6 it had 1.23M installs and once reached the top 6 of Jamaica's overall app chart. Its name matches a legit product claiming 90M users word for word, but the developer is an account registered 2018 years ago that originally ran Indonesian herbal remedy apps; the same store listing was also used by 16 other accounts to publish 16 packs. This piece covers where its installs came from, why they fell to a few hundred a day the moment spend stopped, and why it's not worth following.

A person interrupted while watching a video

On Oct 29, a US user gave it 1 stars on Google Play: "Terrible, it interrupts what I'm watching, forces me to rate it, says rating is optional, but won't leave my screen. Can you believe it?" The same day, a Spanish-speaking user gave it 1 stars, writing: "You're right, it's simple, but I'm not good with technology, I'm quite old. Please make it simpler for us seniors, thank you."

Scrolling back, the reviews share one tone: "These pop-ups are so annoying, too many interruptions" (10-31), "the notifications are driving me crazy" (10-31), "why doesn't it explain what this thing does on my phone, is it an app I already had and was using?" (10-20), "I can't get into YouTube" (Spanish, 10-16), "scam" (11-02); a Japanese-store review from August 18 is just four words: 「多分ウイルス」 (probably a virus). On the other side are plenty of one-word 5-star reviews: "good," "nice," "chaf," ". ni yg." Combined with the "forces me to rate it" review, it's not hard to guess where these 5-star ratings came from (inferred).

What the app itself is

A completely ordinary PDF reader: it opens PDF, Word, Excel, and PPT files, and previews, converts, and organizes documents. The listing opens with "📄 Document Reader – PDF Viewer & PDF Tools," written in a bland, safe way. Version 1.0.6; no updates since Sep 17; labeled "Contains ads," no in-app purchases (Google Play page, 11-06).

Three things don't line up:

  • Name: "PDF Reader Pro" is the legit product of PDF Technologies, made for over ten years, a subscription-based full editor whose App Store page claims 90M users. This pack is called "PDF Reader Pro - Editor" outright, and the Japanese store listing is "PDF リーダー Pro." Some people searching for the brand end up here.
  • Account: the developer is called Kumpulan Ramuan Herbal (Indonesian for "herbal remedy collection"), registered 2018 years ago in May, with 31 Indonesian herbal remedy content apps under it, all package names ending in .mesotheliaomalawfirm. "Mesothelioma lawyer" is one of the highest-CPC keywords in English ads, a classic way to earn ad revenue early on. Starting in 2025 the account shifted to VPNs: Dat Proxy Net was pulled twice, and Ska VPN, after reaching 44k installs, was taken down in July 2026 17. Seven days ago (July 10), this PDF pack went live (AppBrain). An old herbal account suddenly doing PDF tools looks more like an account rented or sold to someone else to use (inferred).
  • Other traces: the privacy policy sits on a one-off domain, pdfreaderproapp.com, and the contact email is a personal Gmail address.

17 accounts, one listing

Searching Google Play with the opening of its listing text turns up 17 packs under 17 different accounts, launched between 8 June 2026 and 10 August, about 16.3M installs combined (Google Play install counts, 11-03 through 11-06). The account names vary widely: STARSPEED LIMITED, LUNAR LTD, BRISTOLS BOWWOW HOUSE LLC, JK Breaking News, devssss 00003…

Functionally almost identical; only the name, icon, account, and package-name suffix (a string of random letters) change. Whether one operation runs them all can't be confirmed; there are only circumstantial clues like the shared template, launch cadence, and privacy policy path. On the Jamaica tools chart, the same-matrix PDF Hero ranked #1 while this one ranked #2 (Appfigures, snapshot during the volume peak).

How the 1.23M came about

PeriodTotal installsWhat happened
7-283,400Just launched
8-08 to 8-10About 42k6 thousand to 10k a day, then 6 days stopped, single digits a day
8-17 to 9-17330kabout 10k a day, with a single-day peak of 52k (9-10)
9-18 to 10-03425ka few thousand a day
10-04 to 10-261.21M780k over three weeks, single-day spikes of 142k (10-08) and 87k (10-21)
After 10-271.23M (11-06)1 thousand to 4 thousand a day, 11-06 only 380

(July through October figures are third-party estimates from AppstoreSpy; 11-06 is from the Google Play page.)

The curve works like a switch: over ten thousand a day when it's on, and the next day it flatlines once it's off. None of the spikes line up with a version update, press coverage, or an influencer video. Searching its name on X turns up no posts discussing it, TikTok search only shows the real brand and other products, and the only places online that mention it are APK download sites and data sites. This looks like paid user acquisition (inference; I found no record of it in the public ad libraries I checked, and no record doesn't mean it didn't run).

On the surge days it showed up in a string of unrelated countries: #6 overall in the Jamaica app chart, #2 in the Utilities chart, #22 in the Utilities chart in Nicaragua (Appfigures), a Utilities chart spot in Japan (Sensor Tower, 10-06), a Utilities Top Free spot in Canada, and #90 to #142 in the Utilities Top Free chart in Spain (dropping out of the top #200 from 10-29 to 11-03,11-04). In small markets like Jamaica and Nicaragua, a few days of concentrated spend is enough to hit the top overall charts, and that buys some chart exposure along the way.

Users from this wave aren't sticking around, and they don't seem to like it much: only 2,330 ratings, 0.19% of installs. 1-star reviews went from 536 in Oct 29 (23.7%) to 688 in Nov 6 (29.5%), while 5-star reviews fell from 1,122 to 1,086 over the same period (Google Play rating distribution).

Where the money comes back

There's only one revenue stream: in-app ads. No in-app purchases, no subscriptions. The reviews complain most about pop-ups, notifications, and floating ads over other apps that interrupt video watching, which is exactly how it makes money. The math for this kind of app roughly works out to: each user bought during a campaign has to see enough ads before they uninstall to cover the acquisition cost (inference; there's no revenue data).

Competitors in this category run a nastier acquisition funnel: video ads for "your PDF won't open / please update" that impersonate system prompts. In May 2026, a security firm disclosed a cleanup that took down 455 apps like this. There's no direct evidence this app used that funnel, but comments like "is this an app I already have?" and "I don't understand tech" look a lot like the comments under those apps.

Who it's competing with

PDF readers are one of the most crowded categories on Google Play. Roughly 560 apps with PDF or Document Reader in the name exist, and 225 of them were listed after May 2026 (Google Play, early November).

  • The big names: Adobe Acrobat Reader has 945M installs and 1.51M new installs a week; WPS Office has 832M and is preinstalled on many phones.
  • An earlier ad-monetization veteran: PDF Reader - Easy PDF has 433M installs and 1.85M new installs a week. It also relies on ads and paid acquisition, but its brand has stayed the same the whole time, and its scale is several hundred times bigger.
  • 16 sister apps on the same template, each taking turns buying installs. By early November this one had already stopped; PDF Hero and PDF Element are still spending.
  • The biggest competition is the system itself: Google Files, Chrome, and Google Drive can all open PDFs directly. It's taking users who don't know their phone already opens PDFs.

If it were you

D. Take a look, don't follow. It ran because of a matrix of ad budgets, a borrowed brand name, and an old borrowed account. The product itself is no different from a dozen sister apps, and without ongoing spend, new users nearly stop. What a follower can copy is only the "paid acquisition + ad monetization" layer, and in PDF readers that layer is already packed with hundreds of apps, with Adobe, WPS, and built-in system features on top.

Who this is for: Teams already doing paid tool acquisition and holding an ad-monetization ledger. Use it as a benchmark: the bar for small-country charts, how many installs one app can capture, and how fast it decays after spend stops.

Who this is not for: Indie devs who want to build a better PDF reader. You'd be up against big brands, the system, and hundreds of clone apps. Anyone who wants to copy this playbook should know that borrowing a famous brand name, running multiple sock-puppet accounts, and using pop-ups and notification spam that leave the app all violate Google Play policy. This developer's VPN apps have already been removed three times, and enforcement often hits the whole account batch.

How to approach it: If you take anything from this, take the perspective, not the category. When choosing products, use its four traits to filter out fake hits like this: install curves that jump on and off, a ratings count under 0.2% of installs, no updates for two months, and an account history that doesn't match the business. If you want to build a utility, start with a function users really need that the system doesn't already include.

How to get users: If you want to try pushing a small-country chart, take one of your own legitimate utilities, run a small budget for a few days in markets like Jamaica or Nicaragua, and see whether it reaches the top few utility spots and whether the organic installs after charting cover the spend. That's the only piece of this case you can borrow legitimately.

Deadline: No window. This category won't get better at any point in time.

Where the math could be wrong: ① Before February 2027, most of these 17 apps were still listed and taking turns with spend, and a new batch of same-template apps appeared. That suggests the economics pay back more than they look like they do, and the math is worth redoing. ② If it kept steady daily installs above a few thousand after spend stopped and its ratings started to recover, the product itself is retaining people, and it's no longer just a paid-acquisition shell.

Data and sources

Why PDF Reader Pro - Editor (com.pdfpro.reader.plusybq) got off the ground

Channel: Google Play | Developer account: Kumpulan Ramuan Herbal | Listed: 2026-07-10 | Research date: 2026-11-06

Bottom line

The product itself isn't why it took off. From 2026 6 to August it was one app in a PDF reader sock-puppet matrix: the same description template, spread across 17 developer accounts with 17 apps in total, roughly 16.3M installs combined. It used an old Indonesian "herbal remedy" account registered in 2018, and borrowed the name of the well-known brand PDF Reader Pro. Installs came from several concentrated surges: 10-04 to 10-26, those three weeks brought in about 780k. During the surges it charted overall and in Utilities in small countries like Jamaica. Users didn't stick: reviews complain about pop-ups, notifications, and floating ads over other apps. The money came from in-app ads, with no in-app purchases. After spend stopped in late October, daily installs fell from tens of thousands to a few hundred.

1. Data: where it stands now

Sources: googleplay database (app_snap / app_day / chart_rank, 10-29 to 11-03); the 11-06 figures were pulled live with google-play-scraper (details + reviews); the curve since launch comes from app_day_ext (AppstoreSpy estimates).

  • Total installs 1,233,311 (11-06), 2,330 ratings, 3.46 stars. The rating count is only 0.19% of installs.
  • The share of 1-star ratings is rising: 1-star count 536 (10-29, 23.7% of ratings) → 630 (11-03) → 688 (11-06, 29.5%), while 5-star fell from 1,122 to 1,086 over the same period.
  • No updates since version 1.0.6,9-17. Marked as containing ads, no in-app purchases (offers_iap = False). A recall card mentions charges from "GOOGLE *KUMPULAN RAMUAN HERBAL", which doesn't match the store listing; unverified.
  • Install curve (AppstoreSpy estimates):
    • 7-28:3,417; 8-10: about 42k (from 8-08 to 8-10 6k to 10k a day, then stopped for 6 days, single digits a day);
    • 8-17 to 9-17: about 10k a day, peaking at 52k (9-10), reaching 330k total;
    • 9-18 to 10-03: a few thousand a day, reaching 425k total;
    • 10-04 to 10-26: second large surge, rising from 425k to 1.21M over three weeks, 780k. Single-day pulses of 85k (10-04), 142k (10-08), 78k (10-12, 10-13), 87k (10-21);
    • After 10-27: 1K to 4K a day, 11-06 only 380. The curve turns on and off, and when it stops it drops to nearly zero. That's what paid acquisition looks like. AppBrain's timeline matches too: on 10-04 it was recorded crossing the 500K mark.
  • Charts:
    • In our database (30 storefronts), it only charted on the Spain Utilities Top Free chart, at #90 to #142 (10-29 to 11-03), dropping out of the top 200 from 11-04;
    • External data sites (all snapshots from the surge period, exact dates uncertain): Appfigures Jamaica overall chart top 6, Jamaica utilities chart #2 (#1 is PDF Hero from the same matrix); Similarweb Jamaica utilities chart #4; Appfigures Nicaragua utilities chart #22; Sensor Tower Japan utilities chart 10-06 has it (Japanese name 「PDF リーダー Pro」); Applyra Canada utilities free chart also has it.

2. Competitors: who else is doing this

PDF / document readers are one of the most crowded categories on Google Play. Counting similar apps from the same batch, googleplay's library has 560 apps with PDF or Document Reader in the name, and 225 of them launched after 2026-05.

3. Growth tactics: where users come from

  • Concentrated paid acquisition, released in waves (likely, ad libraries didn't match)
    • googleads, metaads and tiktokads show nothing when searched by package name, developer name or the domain pdfreaderproapp.com. These libraries only track a list of products, so a miss doesn't mean no spend.
    • Indirect evidence: installs come in pulses (142k in a single day, then almost zero the next); rating rate 0.19%; unrelated countries like Spain, Japan, Canada, Jamaica and Nicaragua charted at the same time; version updates and press coverage don't line up with these pulses.
  • Intrusive ads and misleading acquisition (evidence from reviews): these are recent reviews pulled live by 11-06 (the US, UK and Canada storefronts returned the same English reviews):
    • "tired of all these popups. too many interruptions" "i dont like the way it keeps popping up";
    • "very bad, interferes with my watching, wants to force me to rate them". Users are interrupted while watching other things, which suggests pop-ups over other apps or full-screen notifications, plus pressure to rate it;
    • "The notifications are driving me crazy" "don't like the warning" "why don't you explain what this … is doing on my phone … is this an app I already have". The last one is a user who doesn't know they installed it;
    • "scam" "invasión"; the Japanese storefront has 「多分ウイルス」 (probably a virus);
    • Spanish-language reviews: "no me interesa" appears twice; "soy muy mayor … pon lo más fácil para personas mayores" (I am very old, make it easy for elderly people).
    • This matches the reviews of PDF File Plus, a sister app from the same matrix: "I didn't want this app" "I keep clicking on Update" "I am 87 years old". The common funnel in this category is a fake "PDF won't open / please update" ad (Android Authority 2025-11; the Trapdoor campaign HUMAN 2026-05 disclosed led to the removal of 455 apps).There is no direct evidence that this app uses that funnel.
    • The "pressure to rate" also explains why it has so many 5-star reviews with such empty content ("good" "nice" "chaf" ". ni yg").
  • Name piggybacking + store search: the title "PDF Reader Pro - Editor" is identical to the official PDF Reader Pro, so searches for that term catch its traffic; the Japanese storefront uses a localized name 「PDF リーダー Pro」; the listing says it supports 70 languages.
  • Small-country charts: markets like Jamaica and Nicaragua have low barriers, so a few days of surge spending can land an app in the top overall and utilities charts, earning some chart exposure.
  • Aged account: the developer account Kumpulan Ramuan Herbal was registered 2018-05, with 31 Indonesian herbal-remedy content apps. The package names all share the suffix .mesotheliaomalawfirm, which is a play on "mesothelioma law firm", a keyword with very high ad prices, a typical AdMob traffic-farm tactic. From 2025 to 2026 the account moved to VPNs: Dat Proxy Net 2025-10-30 and 11-29 were both removed; Ska VPN 2026-01 was listed, reached 44k installs, and was removed 2026-07-17. One week before 7-10 this PDF app launched (AppBrain). A long-lived account looks more credible, which suggests it was rented or bought to run the matrix (inference).
  • Creators / influencers / social media: none. x-radar shows 90 days and 0 posts; a TikTok search for "PDF Reader Pro Editor" turns up only the official app and other products; the web has only APK sites (Aptoide, AAPKs, apk.gold) and data sites.

4. Copycats: it is itself a copy

Matching the googleplay library by the opening of the description, "📄 Document Reader – PDF Viewer & PDF Tools", finds 17 packages with 16,319,519 combined installs (11-03 to 11-06):

Shared traits: package names with random letter suffixes, privacy policies hosted under disposable domains at /privacy/ (this app: pdfreaderproapp.com/privacy/), a Gmail contact address (this app: [email protected]), and account names that don't match the business. The apps take turns getting spend: in early November this app had already stopped, while PDF Hero, PDF Element, DBR and PDF Master were still running. On the Jamaica utilities chart PDF Hero is #1 and this app is #2, so two matrix apps held the chart together.

5. Why it charted

  1. It is one of the apps in the matrix that got budget: 17 same-template apps total about 16.3M installs, and this one ranks #5 (googleplay library).
  2. Two concentrated surges: from mid-August to mid-September about 300k; 10-04 to 10-26 about 780k, with a single-day peak of 142k. After spend stopped, daily adds fell to a few hundred (AppstoreSpy estimate).
  3. Piggybacking on the name to catch search: it is called "PDF Reader Pro" outright, the same name as an official app that claims 90M users.
  4. An aged account as cover: a 2018-year-old Indonesian content-farm account that had earlier VPN apps removed several times; its VPN app was pulled one week before this PDF app launched (AppBrain).
  5. Monetized through intrusive ads: no in-app purchases; reviews focus on pop-ups, notifications and overlay interruptions, plus pressure to rate; the share of 1-star reviews rose from 24% to 30%.

6. Differentiation

No product differentiation: the features are standard for a PDF reader, the description is a template rewrite, and it is nearly identical to 16 sister apps. It outperforms some of them only because it got more ad budget and because "PDF Reader Pro" is an easy name to search for, not because the product is better. This kind of "differentiation" can be copied at any time, and it already is.

7. Worth borrowing from / not recommended to copy

  • Takeaways worth borrowing:
    • On Play, some small countries (Jamaica, Nicaragua) have low thresholds for both overall and utilities charts, so a few days of surge spend can land in the top ranks;
    • Install curves that jump on and off, rating rates below 0.2%, no updates for two months, and account history that doesn't match the business are signals for spotting matrix paid-acquisition apps, useful for excluding them when picking opportunities;
    • When spend stops, daily adds fall from tens of thousands to a few hundred, which shows this kind of app has no organic retention, so ROI can only be calculated from ad revenue during the spend window.
  • Not recommended to copy: piggybacking on a well-known brand name, sock-puppet accounts, off-app pop-up ads and notification spam all violate Play policy. This account's VPN apps have already been removed three times, so the risk of mass takedowns and account bans is real.

8. Visibility

Few people know this specific app yet: no press coverage, 0 posts on X, no TikTok content, no public revenue; it only appears on APK sites and data sites. But the "PDF reader sock-puppet paid acquisition" playbook itself has been widely exposed by HUMAN, Android Authority and others, and the category is packed with similar apps.

9. Uncertain

  • Which ad networks it ran on, how much it spent, and its CPI: none of the three ad libraries index it.
  • Whether it has a "fake update" funnel or malicious behavior: no APK reverse-engineering was done; the overlay pop-ups and notification harassment are inferred from reviews only.
  • Whether the accounts were bought or rented, and whether the 17 apps belong to one team: only the shared template, cadence and privacy-policy path point that way.
  • The 36 apps and the in-app purchase charge records mentioned in the recall card: AppBrain now shows 32 apps, and Play lists no in-app purchases; neither claim has been verified.
  • The exact dates of the Jamaica, Nicaragua and other external chart positions.
