# Allrecipes pulled its app, then came back three years later: a publishing group with no paid acquisition charted in the top 20 of the US Food & Drink grossing chart

**What it is** A recipe-saving app with 100k recipes from big names like Allrecipes. The paid version turns recipe videos from TikTok and Instagram into saved recipes.

**Why it took off** Its parent lost about 70% of its Google traffic to AI search, so it's moving readers from the website into the app: save buttons on recipe pages, email, push notifications, and its own TikTok accounts driving daily installs. Add the old Allrecipes users who had been waiting since the old app was pulled.

**C** **How you could play it** Don't go head-to-head. Go after the people it spills over: build around the complaints in its one-star reviews (iPad support, scaling servings, viewing recipe comments, flaky video saves), and get users through searches like "Allrecipes / MyRecipes alternative" and cooking communities. The paywall idea, putting the gate at the "save from a short video" step, can be applied to other categories too.

C grade: it runs on a major publisher's traffic, legacy accounts and recipe licenses, none of which followers can get. The recipe-saving niche is also already crowded with ReciMe and a batch of paid-acquisition newcomers. Its monetization design and spillover users are worth studying, but copying it directly isn't worth the effort. Publicly known / widely discussed

MyRecipes is a recipe collection app from People Inc., the largest magazine and website group in the US (formerly Dotdash Meredith, which owns Allrecipes, Food & Wine, Serious Eats and BHG). It reached about 120k installs in two months and held steady at #15 to #18 on the Google Play US Food & Drink top grossing chart. What drove it wasn't the product. It was its own website's 80M monthly visitors, a base of old users who had waited three years, and a line at the end of every recipe video saying "Download the app." Independent developers can't get any of that. What's worth learning is where it puts the paywall, and the gaps it leaves behind.

### The ending of a video with 430k views

In 2026 November 5, Allrecipes' TikTok account posted a video of someone making Buc-ee's "Beaver Nuggets" at home: butter and caramel coating on puffed corn. The caption ends with:

> Download the @myrecipes app to keep your recipe inspiration organized.

By 11-06 the video had 430k views. The same account posted two more that day, ending with "Want recipes like this? Save them in the @myrecipes app" and "You won't want to lose this one, save it to @myrecipes." Since September, several @allrecipes videos carrying that line have hit between 200k and 780k views, and @foodandwine, @realsimple and @better.homes.and.gardens are posting it too.

That's MyRecipes' acquisition: not bought traffic, its own traffic.

### What it is and how it charges

A recipe-saving app. The free version lets you search, save and build collections across the group's 100k-plus recipes, save recipes from "thousands of" other food sites, and includes a screen-on cooking mode. The store page's first line reads "75M recipes saved," and most of that figure likely came from the web version (inference).

The paid MyRecipes+ is $6.99/month or $39.99/year, with a 7-day free trial. What you get: no ads, more recommendations, discounts from partner kitchenware brands, and the key feature, **saving recipes from Instagram and TikTok** , turning a video into a recipe with ingredients and steps (MyRecipes member page, 2026-09-23). The launch sponsor is the US supermarket chain Kroger, and the group's next plan is ordering ingredients directly from recipes (Axios 2025-11-26).

### How much it grew

| | Metric | Sources |
|---|---|---|
| Google Play cumulative installs | About 122k, 7 days +7,300 | Third-party estimate, 11-06 |
| Play US Food & Drink top grossing | Charted at #15–18 continuously from 10-29 to 11-06 | Google Play charts |
| US App Store | 188 ratings, averaging 4.0 stars; #19–27 on the same category chart | App Store,11-06 |
| Web registration | Launched 2025-04, 2026-09 to 5M | Group CFO, 2026-09-08 investor conference |

Listed on Play Aug 21, on App Store Aug 27, but the official press release didn't go out until Sep 23. The curve is flat, around 1,000 to 2,000 installs a day (estimated). No spike on press release days, but early and mid-September each jumped by a few thousand, which lines up with Serious Eats publishing an article introducing the app on Sep 3, plus in-site pushes and emails (inference; the exact push dates are unverified). Only charted in the US.

### Where users came from: all in-house

**The save button on recipe pages.** Every Allrecipes recipe page has a save button that takes you to MyRecipes sign-up. The executive in charge told Press Gazette plainly: it relied on on-site messaging, email, banners and push, and **did no paid marketing** (2025-12-03). The group's food and lifestyle sites draw about 80M unique visitors a month (Axios).

**Old users who waited three years.** The original Allrecipes app was pulled 2023 years ago, and there was no official mobile app after that. Reddit kept asking "where did the Allrecipes app go?" Logging in with an Allrecipes account brings your old favorites over automatically. A four-star App Store review from 10-20 opens with: "So glad Allrecipes has an app again."

Some people were pushed in too. 9-27 One iPad user wrote: "My favorites are gone from the website and I can't save any more there, so is this the only option now?" That's one user's account, but if true, it suggests the web favorites feature is being funneled into the app (inference).

**Its own social accounts and media.** The TikTok videos from the opening, plus articles about the app that Serious Eats and Allrecipes published themselves.

**Paid ads.** No MyRecipes ads turned up in the Meta Ad Library. (Not finding them doesn't mean none were run. Apple and Google search ads aren't visible.)

### Why the parent company had to do this

On its Q3 2026 earnings call, People Inc. said Google referral traffic had dropped about 70% over the past few years, and AI summaries now appear in over 90% of searches. Readers stopped clicking through, so ads stopped selling. It has to turn readers into registered and subscribed users, and a 15-person dedicated team runs MyRecipes with on-site resources tilted toward it.

This is the real story behind the app: **not someone discovering a new need, but a publisher whose traffic AI search took, moving the readers it still has into its own app.**

### What users are complaining about

The App Store rating is 188 reviews averaging 4.0 stars, but the one-star reviews cluster around the same complaints:

> "Allrecipes was fine before. Keeps pushing subscriptions, doesn't fit the iPad, and I lost all my Allrecipes favorites." (9-23, one star)

> "It's just a place to save recipes. Does it really need two-step verification?" (9-17, two stars)

> "Can't find the halve-the-recipe button. I have to find the dish in the app, then go back to the website to search." (9-11, one star)

> "You can't see recipe comments in the app. Other people's tips often make a dish much better, and I have to scroll to the bottom and tap 'view on web.'" (9-25, three stars)

Summing up the complaints: login errors (403, repeated verification-code prompts), incomplete migration of old favorites, no iPad support, no scaling of recipes by serving size, no view of user comments under recipes, and a subscription pitch the moment you open it. Also a 9-08 one-star review saying "saved from Instagram 4 times and it never worked." The most valuable feature behind the paywall doesn't work reliably every time.

Some people are happy, though. 8-31 A five-star review says: "What really sets it apart is the recipe library, deeper than anyone else's."

### Who it's competing with

This niche is already packed. On the Google Play US Food & Drink top grossing chart on 11-06, MyRecipes sits behind a crowd of rivals:

| Competitors | Scale (Play installs, 11-06) | How it differs from MyRecipes |
|---|---|---|
| ReciMe | 3.23M, 7 days +79k, top grossing #1 | Independent team, focused on one-tap recipe saving from TikTok/IG plus meal planning, acquires users through creators, has no recipe library of its own |
| NYT Cooking | 1.21M, Top Grossing #5 | Similar media recipe library plus subscription, but the recipes themselves are paywalled |
| Whipp, TapCook, NeatEat, mise | 6–210k, top grossing #2–9 | New AI meal-planning / video-saving apps from 2026, surging on TikTok creator-driven paid acquisition (Whipp +40k in one week) |
| Samsung Food (formerly Whisk) | 3.84M | Big-tech ecosystem, cross-site saving plus meal planning and shopping lists |
| Paprika, Recipe Keeper, Stashcook and others | 35–1.36M | Pure utilities with no content library |

What MyRecipes uniquely has is the 100k recipes tested in its own kitchen, under big brand names. But feature-wise it's weaker than ReciMe-style apps, and users list the gaps themselves in reviews.

### If it were you

**The verdict:** You can't play this one, but it's worth studying. It got where it is on 80M monthly visitors, 5M registered users and the recipe licenses for 100k dishes, none of which followers can get. The recipe-saving niche is already crowded with ReciMe and a batch of 2026-year-old apps bought through TikTok creators.

**Three things worth learning:**

1. **Charge at the point of greatest pain.** Saving recipes from the website is free. Saving from TikTok/IG videos is what costs money. "Can't save the recipe from a video I saw" is a problem users hit every day. Putting the paywall there converts better than putting it on the content itself (NYT Cooking's approach). The idea transfers to other categories: fitness videos, outfit videos, travel guides. Anywhere people see something, want to save it, and can't, is a place to charge.

2. **People left behind when a big brand kills its app.** The Allrecipes app has been gone for three years, and people keep searching for "Allrecipes app" and "MyRecipes alternative." Rivals (recipeone, drizzlelemons) already publish alternative pages to catch that search traffic. Whenever a big brand has just shut an app, or shipped one users hate, a ready-made group is looking for a replacement.

3. **Its one-star reviews are a feature request list.** iPad support, scaling by servings, user comments under recipes, no forced two-step verification, and reliable saving from social videos. From the reviews, these users are mostly Americans who've cooked for years, subscribed to magazines for decades, and read recipes on iPads (inference). They resent People Inc. and are price-sensitive ("I can't afford it, but I'd sit through ads").

**Who it suits:** small teams already building recipe tools or "turn-videos-into-structured-content" tools, using that list of complaints as a roadmap, or people doing SEO who can write "X alternative" pages.

**Not for:** anyone trying to build a general recipe-saving app from scratch to go head-to-head with MyRecipes or ReciMe. Without paid acquisition and hoping for organic store traffic, new apps in this niche are all buying TikTok creators.

**How to get users:** don't compete on traffic, go after the people it spills over: write pages like "MyRecipes / Allrecipes App alternatives" and "how to export your Allrecipes saves"; on Reddit r/Cooking and cooking Facebook groups, answer "what app do you use for recipes on iPad?"

**When is the window:** Thanksgiving to Christmas (late November to end of December) is when Americans look up the most recipes, and MyRecipes will most likely push hardest on-site then (inferred). To catch the spillover users, ride this wave.

**Signs you're wrong:** ① MyRecipes adds iPad support, serving scaling, and recipe reviews within a version or two, the one-star complaints disappear, and the spillover users go with them; ② it starts large-scale Meta or TikTok ads, meaning its own traffic isn't enough and the ceiling is lower than it looks; ③ conversely, if 2027 early in the year it drops out of the US top-30 Top Grossing, it means a publisher's own traffic can't carry a subscription app either, and a standalone recipe-saving tool still does it better.

- **Confirmed** **Own TikTok/IG accounts carry the call to action** : several @allrecipes videos end with "Download the @myrecipes app," with 220k–780k views; @foodandwine, @realsimple and @better.homes.and.gardens also post (TikHub)

- **Confirmed** **Own media coverage and press releases** : Serious Eats 2026-09-03, Allrecipes posted articles; 2026-09-23 published on PR Newswire; Kroger was the launch sponsor

- Inferred **Paid ads** : no record in the metaads library; our library doesn't cover ASA/UAC

## Why MyRecipes (com.people.myrecipes) managed to break out

> In one line: People Inc., the largest US publishing group (formerly Dotdash Meredith, owning Allrecipes, Food & Wine, Serious Eats, BHG, EatingWell and more), turned its own "save recipes" web tool into an app. Users came over from its own websites, emails, on-site banners and its own TikTok accounts, and Allrecipes legacy accounts' saves migrated directly. It broke out because of resources, not because the product is better than competitors.

### 1. Data (from our database)

- **Google Play** (googleplay library, 2026-11-06): 121,913 total installs worldwide, +7 over the last 7,311 days; 159 ratings; charted only in the US: Food & Drink Top Grossing #15, Top Free #50. Top Grossing has held steady at #15–18 from 10-29 to 11-06; Top Free slowly slid from 36 to 50. In-app purchases $6.99–$39.99.

- **Curve since launch** (googleplay.app_day_ext, AppstoreSpy estimate): 2026-09-01 reached 7,395 installs, 09-24 to 47,636,10-21 to 101,864,11-05 to 121,913. Daily average roughly 1,000–2,000, consistently flat. **No spike in the days 9-23 put out its press release** (09-19 40,866 → 09-24 47,636), but 9-10, 9-16 and 10-03 had several jumps of 4–8k (these match its on-site push and email campaigns; the exact send dates weren't verified). The store launch was 2026-08-21, people were already using it in early September, and 9-23 was the official announcement.

- **App Store** (appstore library, id6755009073, listed 2026-08-27): US rating count 188, Food & Drink Top Grossing #19–27 (10-28 to 11-06).

- **Ad library** (metaads): no Meta advertiser or ads found for MyRecipes (not finding them doesn't mean none were run).

- The developer PEOPLE INC. GROUP also has another app in the library: PEOPLE: Pop Culture & Puzzles (iOS US Entertainment Top Free #6).

### 2. What it is and how it makes money

- Free version: search, save, and build collections across 100k+ recipes tested in the People Inc. test kitchen; save from "thousands of" food sites; includes a cooking mode (screen stays on) and personalized recommendations.

- MyRecipes+: $6.99/month or $39.99/year, 7-day free trial. Benefits are ad removal, **saving recipes from Instagram / TikTok** (converting videos into structured recipes), more recommendations, and brand partner discounts (Misen, Thermoworks, Glasvin, Magazines.com). Source: support.myrecipes.com membership FAQ (updated 2026-09-23).

- The launch sponsor was Kroger (PR Newswire press release, 2026-09-23); the next plan is to let people buy ingredients directly from recipes (Axios 2025-11-26; Press Gazette 2025-12-03).

### 3. Competitors

| Competitors | Platform | Launched | Scale (googleplay library 11-06, US F&D Top Grossing rank) | How it differs from MyRecipes |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| ReciMe | iOS/Android | 2023 | 3.23M installs, 7-day +79k, US Top Grossing #1 | Indie developer, focused on one-tap recipe saving from TikTok/IG plus meal planning, acquires users through creators and TikTok; no owned recipe library |
| Samsung Food (formerly Whisk) | iOS/Android/big company | 2019/2023 renamed | 3.84M, Top Grossing #23 | Big-company ecosystem, cross-site saving + meal planning + shopping cart |
| NYT Cooking | iOS/Android/web | 2014 | 1.21M, Top Grossing #5 | Also a "publisher-owned recipe library + subscription," but all recipes are paywalled; MyRecipes recipes are free, and it only charges for social saving and ad removal |
| Recipe Keeper / Stashcook / Paprika / Pepper / Honeydew | iOS/Android | 2010s–2020s | 350k–1.36M | Pure tool, users import their own recipes, no content library, one-time purchase or subscription |
| Whipp / TapCook / NeatEat / mise | iOS/Android | 2026 years | 6–210k, top grossing #2–9 | A new wave of AI meal-planning / video-saving indie apps, surging on TikTok creator spend (Whipp 7-day +40k) |
| America's Test Kitchen, Delish (Hearst) | iOS/Android | Early on | 23–350k | Recipe apps from other publishers with only their own content, no cross-site saving |
| Large language models like ChatGPT | big tech | — | — | Can generate recipes, but doesn't save your collections and doesn't guarantee the recipes were tested (People Inc. itself draws the distinction this way) |

Competitors are plentiful and the niche is already crowded; on the Play US Top Grossing chart, MyRecipes ranks below ReciMe, NYT Cooking, Stashcook and several indie apps launched in the past 2026 years.

### 4. Where users came from (growth tactics)

1. **Owned website funnel (confirmed)** : People Inc.'s food and lifestyle brands draw about 80M unique visitors a month (Axios). The "Save" button on every recipe page sends people into MyRecipes sign-up; the GM's words: "on-site marketing messages, email, on-site banners and push," with **no paid marketing spend** (Press Gazette 2025-12-03). The web version launched 2025-04, reached 2.1M sign-ups in half a year (Axios 2025-11-26), and 2026-09 to 5M sign-ups (CFO Tim Quinn, Citi TMT conference 2026-09-08). The app simply moves these 5M web sign-ups onto phones.

2. **Legacy user migration (confirmed)** : When Allrecipes account holders log into MyRecipes, their old saves come along automatically (Allrecipes 2025-03-31 "Meet MyRecipes"). Since Allrecipes' Dinner Spinner app was shut down 2023 years ago, there has been no official recipe app on phones (Reddit r/Cooking; recipeone.app blog), leaving a backlog of people who want one.

3. **Own media coverage (confirmed)** : Serious Eats ran a piece introducing the app 2026-09-03 (just before the curve's 9-10 and 9-16 jumps), and Allrecipes also published "Never Lose a Recipe Again With the New MyRecipes App."

4. **Own TikTok / IG accounts carry the call to action (confirmed)** : several @allrecipes recipe videos end with "Download the @myrecipes app," with views of 780k, 540k, 430k and 220k (TikHub, 2026-09 to November); @foodandwine, @realsimple and @better.homes.and.gardens also post (TikHub).

5. **Press releases, trade media, earnings calls (confirmed)** : 9-23 put out a PR Newswire release, and it was repeatedly mentioned on earnings and investor conference calls; but no download-curve lift from 9-23 is visible.

6. **Paid ads (not found)** : no record in the metaads library; TikHub returned one #ad video, but it wasn't verified as MyRecipes'.

### 5. Why it took off

- **The traffic is already there** : 80M monthly visitors plus 5M registered users, every day being told "save recipes, download the app," so downloads come in daily and the curve doesn't depend on spikes (the AppstoreSpy curve is flat; Press Gazette says no paid marketing was spent).

- **The parent company was forced to do this** : Google referral traffic to People Inc. has dropped about 70% over the past few years, and AI Overviews now appear in more than 90% of searches (Q3 2026 earnings call). The company has to turn readers into registered and subscribed users it can reach directly, so MyRecipes is run by a dedicated 15-person team, with on-site resources behind it.

- **Revenue can still chart** : first, an annual fee of $39.99 plus a 7-day trial, a standard subscription setup; second, **putting a feature users already want (saving recipes from TikTok/IG) behind the paywall** ; third, the bar to reach the US F&D category Top Grossing chart isn't high. How many people actually pay hasn't been disclosed (Subscription Insider 2026-11-04: management only said MyRecipes+ and PEOPLE VIP combined "sign-ups or downloads" exceeded 6M).

### 6. Differentiation

- What's actually different: a recipe library of **100k recipes tested in their own kitchen, backed by big-name brands** (Allrecipes, Serious Eats, Food & Wine, plus celebrity recipes from Ina Garten and Julia Child), along with **cross-site saving** . Tools like ReciMe have no content; NYT Cooking has content but every recipe is paywalled; other publishers' apps only save their own recipes.

- But this differentiation **is not the main reason it took off** . Its product features (saving social-media recipes, collections, cooking mode) are about the same as ReciMe, Flavorish and others, and arguably weaker (a third-party comparison says it can't scale servings and has no AI recipe editing). It took off because of **traffic and an existing account base** : the funnel was already sitting on sites like Allrecipes.

### 7. How many people saw it and whether anyone copied it

- High visibility: Axios, Press Gazette, AdExchanger, Subscription Insider and Motley Fool earnings notes, and PR Newswire have all covered it, and it was named on a listed company's earnings call. Revenue figures aren't public.

- Copycats: no direct clones. Only competitors (drizzlelemons.com, recipeone.app) are riding its search traffic with SEO pages like "MyRecipes alternative" and "where did the Allrecipes app go". There's also an iOS app with the same name, "MyRecipes: Recipe Keeper" (id6781115874,2026-07-24,0, rated), which is name-squatting and gets little traffic.

### 8. What small teams can borrow

- **Make saving a feature entry point** : saving a recipe is a strong intent signal, and it can be used to drive signups, collect preferences, and sell ads and affiliate products.

- **Split free and paid by behavior** : saving recipes from websites is free, saving from TikTok/IG is paid. The most common friction for users is "I can't save the recipe video I just saw," and that's where payment is gated.

- **Ride big platforms' traffic** : after the Allrecipes app was pulled, users are searching for alternatives. Queries like "Allrecipes app" and "MyRecipes alternative" get searched, and indie devs can build SEO pages to catch those users (recipeone and drizzlelemons are doing exactly this).

- What small teams can't copy: 80M monthly visitors, the rights to 100k recipes, and the Kroger sponsorship.

### 9. Still unclear

- Paying users and revenue (not public). What revenue corresponds to #15 on Play Top Grossing is unverified.

- Which email, push or in-app event drove each of the 4–8k jumps on the curve is unverified.

- Whether it runs Apple Search Ads or Google UAC (our ad library doesn't cover this).

- "Play launch 08-21" may be the date a test listing was later edited.
