# Riding Samsung's name to sell phone switching: a Pakistani studio's "Smart Switch" hit 1.05M installs in half a year

**What it is** A phone-transfer tool: install it on both phones and move contacts, photos and files from the old phone to the new one. It makes money from ads and $16.99–29.99 in-app purchases.

**Why it took off** "Smart Switch" is the name of Samsung's official switching app, which tens of millions of people search for every week. In 11 countries including Korea, Japan, Germany, France and Italy, it puts that term in its titles in the local language, catching people who search the term but can't use the official app, and it steadily gets four to five thousand installs a day.

**Grade C** **How you could follow it** Stop competing with "Smart Switch." Pick a name for a preinstalled big-brand app that doesn't already have a crowd of same-name apps, localize it by country in the titles, and use an off-the-shelf tools template with ad monetization to catch the search traffic it leaks.

Grade C: The tactic of localizing brand search terms by country is worth learning, but switching is a category with a dozen same-name, same-template apps. This one has only reached the middle of the pack in half a year, its growth is slowing, its in-app purchases are estimated at under $5,000 a month, and it's skating on the edge of trademark and impersonation policies. Copying it isn't worth it. Almost nobody knows about it yet

Nov 6 In the Korean Google Play store, search "스마트 스위치" (Smart Switch). Besides Samsung's official app, you'll find a same-name app: "스마트 스위치: 파일 전송" by developer Hi-Shot Inc. It has 1.05M installs and ranks #33 on the Korean productivity top-grossing chart. The product is identical to a dozen competitors. It gets traffic for one reason: in every country it writes Samsung's official app name at the front of the title, in the local language. Anyone can do this, so it only earns a middling position.

### A machine-translated store page

The Korean store description reads convincingly: "The biggest worry when switching to a new phone is data migration…" Further down, the first subheading is "빠르고 안전한 전염" ("fast and safe contagion"), which was meant to say "fast and secure transfer" (전송) but was machine-translated into "contagion." The first step of the usage guide is "을 두 기기에 설치합니다," meaning "install ____ on both devices," where the app name got dropped and only a particle is left (Google Play Korea listing, 11-06).

The English page is more direct: "It works like MobileTrans — but faster" and "Reliable MobileTrans alternative." MobileTrans is Wondershare's established phone-transfer software. So this app's title borrows Samsung's name, its description borrows Wondershare's, and the name "Copy My Data" happens to match another long-running switching app with 8,000 million+ installs.

The developer page lists Laraib Farooq Khan, based in Sargodha, Punjab, Pakistan. The same account also has Font Keyboard (16M installs), QR Scanner (7.89M) and photo recovery (560k), which points to a small studio running a "tools + ads + high-priced in-app purchases" pipeline (Google Play install counts, 11-06).

### What it is

A phone-transfer tool: install it on both phones, pick "Send" or "Receive," tap a few times, and move contacts, photos, videos and files from the old phone to the new one. No network or cable required. It has ads and in-app purchases at $16.99–$29.99 per item.

Samsung, Google, Apple, OPPO and Xiaomi all offer this for free, and most of them build it into the setup wizard. What this app sells isn't the feature. It's being the one that shows up when someone searches "Smart Switch" in the store.

### It didn't go viral overnight

On Google Play its listing date reads 2026-08-12, which looks like "a million installs in three months." It isn't. Third-party install estimates show that by May 13 it already had 104k installs; early June 210k, early July about 400k, early August 570k, early September 760k, passing 20 1M in October, and 6 1.05M in November (AppstoreSpy estimate). An APK mirror site logs a version released Jun 11 1.0.6; the 1.0.8 version captured in Aug 19 still had the internal name "Phone Clone Data Transfer App." So the more likely story: it launched between 3 and April **(inference)** , then in August it was renamed and its store listing changed, and the listing date reset with it.

The curve has stayed flat and is gradually flattening: from 5 to July roughly 6,000,8 a day, and to September roughly 5,000; in the last 7 days it added 30,524, over four thousand a day. Only on Jun 29 and Jul 13 did single days jump 25k–42k, which looks like a one-off paid push, or possibly store featuring, **unverified** .

The ratings count is strangely low: 1.05M installs but only 307 ratings, distributed as 1 five-star 43, four-star 2 29, three-star 3 29, two-star 4 0, one-star 5 204,5, with about five new ratings a day. The Korean and US pages both show 307, so it's not that the volume sits in other countries and isn't visible in the US. More likely the rating count restarted from zero when the app was renamed and relisted, plus the app only prompts happy users to rate **(inference)** .

### Where users come from: translating someone else's name into 11 languages

Samsung's official Smart Switch has 2.46B installs on Google Play and gained about 16.8M in the last 7 days (Google Play, 11-06). It's a huge brand search term. The official app mainly handles "switch to Galaxy." Everyone else searching the term, whether switching to another brand, switching from another brand, or simply not recognizing the official one, gets leaked to the same-name third-party apps.

It localizes this term in every country:

| Country/region | Store title |
|---|---|
| South Korea | 스마트 스위치: 파일 전송 |
| Japan | スマートスイッチ: データ転送 |
| Germany | Smart Switch: Datentransfer |
| France | Smart Switch Données Transfert |
| Italy | Smart Switch: Clona telefono |
| Spain | Smart Switch: Copiar mis datos |
| Hong Kong | Smart switch: copy my data |
| Vietnam | Chia sẻ thông minh: Chuyển tệp |
| UK, Singapore, Canada | Smart Switch: Copy My Data |

Source: names shown on Google Play charts by region, 10-29 to 11-06.

The package name is also stuffed with keywords: phone clone, smart transfer, smart switch, data transfer, with a misspelled "tranfer" in the middle.

The result: #95–109 on Korea's productivity free chart and #33–40 on its top-grossing chart; 88–125 in Germany, 112–198 in France, 132–199 in Italy, 130–186 in the UK, and 180–200 in Japan (productivity free chart); #155–195 on the productivity top-grossing charts in Hong Kong, Singapore and Vietnam. On the same day, Samsung's official Smart Switch ranked #63 on Korea's productivity free chart, and it ranked #104 (Google Play charts, 10-29 to 11-06). It picks places with lots of Samsung phones, frequent switching, and high ad rates.

Other channels are barely visible. There are no posts about it on X in the last 30 days, it doesn't show up on TikTok, and there's no press coverage. Whether it buys ads can't be verified from outside. The same-category Galixo has active creatives in the Google ad library, so people in this category do buy Google app ads. Using its own keyboard app, with 16M installs, to funnel users to it is a common studio move, also **unverified** .

### Where the money comes from

Ads plus in-app purchases. Switching takes a while, and moving a few gigabytes of photos takes minutes, which makes it a natural spot for ads **(inference)** . In-app purchases run $16.99–$29.99 per item, probably one-time unlocks like "unlimited transfer."

The earnings numbers from outside don't line up well. Ranking #33 on Korea's productivity top-grossing chart shows people are paying. AppGazers estimates its October Google Play in-app revenue at **under $5,000** (model estimate). Ad revenue is completely unknown. The one thing that's clear: this isn't a big business. It's a mid-tier product from a studio's pipeline.

### Who it's competing with: at least ten same-name apps

| App | Developer | Launched | Scale (Google Play installs, 11-06) | How it compares |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Samsung Smart Switch Mobile | Samsung | 2013 | 2.46B, +16.8M in 7 days | The brand whose name is being borrowed; free, mostly preinstalled |
| Copy My Data | Red Sky Labs | 2014 | 81.5M installs, 267k ratings | The category veteran, whose name it also borrowed |
| MobileTrans | Wondershare | 2021 | 28.2M | A legitimate brand with a desktop product, named in its description |
| Clone Phone - Phone Switch | Cards | 2021 | 18.3M | An old hand on the same template, with in-app purchases up to $99.99 |
| Transfer All Data - PhoneClone | Novus Tech | 2022 | 13.7M | Same template |
| Copy My Data: Phone Transfer | Technoline | 2024 | 9.93M | Same template, #36 on Japan's tools top-grossing chart |
| Smart Transfer: Copy My Data | DigiGen | Unknown | 5.45M | Same template, #18 on Malaysia's productivity top-grossing chart |
| Smart Switch — Copy My Data | Simple things for life | 2022 | 4.02M | Name nearly identical, word for word |
| Smart Switch - File Transfer | Tetra VPN Services | 2026-04 | 1.69M, 7 days +58k | Entered at the same time, bigger than it and growing faster |
| Phone Clone - Phone Switch | Galixo | 2026-09 | 490k | Started later, running Google Ads |
| Smart Switch App: Clone Phone | Rubea / Sky Vision Apps Lab | 2026-07 / 10-24 | 390k / 130k | Still getting new uploads |

By installs, it ranks about #15 in its category. OEM transfer tools from OPPO, Honor, Xiaomi, and Huawei are not counted.

### How many people know it

Very little. No public revenue, no discussion, no coverage. It only shows up on APK mirror sites and a few data sites. That doesn't help followers, though: nobody pays attention, not because the space is empty, but because there are too many identical apps and nothing new to say.

### If it were you

**Verdict:** Don't build another "Smart Switch." The category already has a dozen apps with the same name and template, and this one has only reached mid-tier after six months, with growth slowing. The move worth taking is the method: find the name of a preloaded app from a big phone maker, one that thousands of people search every week but whose official app only serves some of them. Then, in each country, write that term into your listing in the local language to catch the rest.

**Good fit for:** small studios already running a "utility + ads + IAP" pipeline that can ship a new app in days and can live with store-review risk, and teams that can write multilingual store listings.

**Bad fit for:** anyone trying to build a reputable product they can run long-term; anyone counting on IAP to pay back without ad-monetization experience; anyone uneasy about "borrowing a trademark." This move sits right on the edge of Google Play's impersonation and misleading-content policies and could get delisted at any time. August's rename and relaunch may be related to this **(inferred)** .

**How to do it:** Pick a brand term that isn't crowded yet, instead of piling onto "Smart Switch." First, search the names of big-brand preloaded apps (phone-maker backup, gallery, files, themes, remote control, and so on) on Google Play in each country, and count how many third-party apps with the same name sit in the top ten results. Only go for a term with fewer than three or four such apps, where the official app clearly serves only its own devices. Localize the listing for each country separately and have native speakers review it. Don't ship machine translation like "fast and safe infection."

**How to get users:** Mostly store search. Put the brand and feature terms in the title, subtitle, package name, and description. At launch, you can buy a small amount of Google App Campaigns to push rankings, then cross-promote with ad slots in your older apps.

**Timing:** No deadline, this is an evergreen business. But the window for each brand term depends on when the same-name apps fill up. For "Smart Switch," someone was still launching a new one as late as Oct 24.

**Signs you've misread it:** ① If it and Tetra VPN, which launched around the same time, get removed or forced to rename in the next month or two, that means Google is cracking down on brand-term borrowing and this path is narrowing. ② If its daily installs keep sliding from around 4,000, and the new same-name apps entering are each smaller than the last, the remaining traffic for this term is being split up. ③ If the official app for the term you picked adds features like "transfer from any phone," the traffic leak closes.

Where users come from

- **Verified** **Store search / brand-term ASO** : localized titles in 11 storefronts all start with "Smart Switch" (Korean 스마트 스위치, Japanese スマートスイッチ, etc., googleplay library chart_rank). Package name is stuffed with keywords; description borrows MobileTrans.

- **Verified** **Rename and repackage** : the internal name in the Aug 19 1.0.8 build is still Phone Clone Data Transfer App (apk.gold). The store release date was reset around 8-12, yet by May it already had 100k installs.

- Inferred **Paid acquisition (Google App Campaigns, etc.)** : it isn't on our ad-library tracking list. Galixo, a same-category app, has active creatives in the Google ad library. Its single-day jumps of 2.5–42k on 06-29 and 07-13 look like bought volume.

- Inferred **Cross-promotion across the developer's portfolio** : Hi-Shot Inc's Font Keyboard (16M) and QR Scanner (7.89M), totaling roughly 25.5M installs, may be used to drive traffic.

- Inferred **Content / creators / media** : 30 posts on X in the last 0 days, no results on TikTok search, no coverage.

## Smart Switch: Copy My Data (Hi-Shot Inc): why it's getting traction

Package name `com.phone.clone.smart.tranfer.smart.switch.data.transfer.app` (note the misspelling "tranfer" in the package name). Google Play, Productivity category. Developer Hi-Shot Inc; the store lists the developer as Laraib Farooq Khan, with an address in Sargodha, Pakistan (source: Play listing "About the developer," read 2026-11-06).

### Bottom line

It isn't a new breakout hit. It's a **content-transfer utility that has run for about six months, pulling store-search traffic from the name of Samsung's official app, Smart Switch** . Samsung Smart Switch has 2.46B installs on Play and roughly 16.8M new installs in 7 days (googleplay library 2026-11-06), so that search term gets enormous traffic. In every country, the app writes "Smart Switch / 스마트 스위치 / スマートスイッチ" into its title in the local language, catching people who search "smart switch" but can't or won't use Samsung's official app (for example, switching to a non-Samsung phone, or moving from a non-Samsung phone). It monetizes through ads plus high-priced IAPs of $16.99–$29.99, the standard playbook of Pakistani utility-app studios. The "August launch, over a million in 3 months" figure from recall is a misreading: 8-12 that release date was reset, and it already had 100k installs in mid-May.

### 1. What the data actually says

**Install curve (AppstoreSpy estimates, googleplay library `app_day_ext`):**

- 2026-05-13 already had 104,134 installs (AppstoreSpy usually starts tracking an app once it has a thousand or two installs, so it likely went live around 2026 3–April; exact date unverified). APKPure logs the 1.0.6 build as released on 2026-06-11, and Uptodown logs the 1.0.7 build as July 22.

- 06-01 211k → 07-01 about 395k → 08-01 574k → 09-01 757k → 10-01 881k → 10-20 passes 1M → 11-06 1.05M.

- Average daily new installs: 5–July about 6,000,8; September about 5,000; October about 4,500; early November about 4,400 (last 7 days +30,524, googleplay library `app_profile`). **This is a steady, even slowly flattening line, with no explosion.** There were a few days in the middle with single-day jumps of 25k–42k (06-29, 07-13), possibly paid push, possibly store featuring; unverified.

- "Release date 2026-08-12" is the store's released field. In the Aug 19 build captured by apk.gold 1.0.8, the internal name is still "Phone Clone Data Transfer App." It's reasonable to infer the app was renamed and its store info changed around August (to "Smart Switch: Copy My Data"), which reset the release date.

**Odd rating count:** 1.05M installs but only 307 ratings and 5 written reviews (US store view, googleplay library `app_snap` 11-06). The rating breakdown is [1 stars 43, 2 stars 29, 3 stars 29, 4 stars 0, 5 stars 204]. The 4-star count steadily adds about 0,5 5 a day. Two possible explanations:

- Google Play shows ratings **per country** . We pulled the listing from the US store, but most of its volume is in Korea, Germany, France, Italy, Vietnam, Hong Kong, and so on, so the US count is low (speculative, but likely).

- The in-app rating prompt only directs satisfied users to give a 5-star rating. A 4-star 0 rating is a sign of this, unverified.

apk.gold showed a total rating count of 0 in Aug 19, which also fits with "ratings restart accumulating after a rename and relist" (unverified).

**Charts (googleplay library `chart_rank`, 2026-10-29 to 11-06):**

- Korea Productivity Top Grossing #33–40, on the chart the whole time; Korea Productivity Top Free #95–109.

- Germany #88–125, France #112–198, Italy #132–199, UK #130–186, Spain #189–191, Japan #180–200 (Productivity Top Free).

- Hong Kong, Singapore, Vietnam Productivity Top Grossing #155–195.

- On the Korea Productivity Top Free chart, Samsung's official Smart Switch is #63 and this app is #104, with Send Anywhere in between at #100.

**Localized titles (names shown for each storefront in chart_rank):**

| Store | Title |
|---|---|
| Korean | 스마트 스위치: 파일 전송 |
| Japanese | スマートスイッチ: データ転送 |
| German | Smart Switch: Datentransfer |
| French | Smart Switch Données Transfert |
| Italian | Smart Switch: Clona telefono |
| Spanish | Smart Switch: Copiar mis datos |
| Hong Kong | Smart switch: copy my data |
| Vietnamese | Chia sẻ thông minh: Chuyển tệp |
| UK/Singapore/Canada | Smart Switch: Copy My Data |

Every storefront's title puts "Smart Switch" (the name of Samsung's official app) up front, translated or transliterated. The store description even says outright "works like MobileTrans" and "Reliable MobileTrans alternative," borrowing a competitor's name (Play listing).

**Monetization:** Has ads (ad_supported = True), with IAPs of $16.99–$29.99 each (googleplay library). AppGazers estimates its Google Play IAP revenue in October of 2026 year at **< $5K** , with downloads of 116k–544k in the same period (model estimate, not actual figures; appgazers.com report page). Ranking #33 on Korea's Top Grossing chart means people there are paying, but the total seems small. Most of the money probably comes from ads: the transfer flow is long and involves waiting, which makes a good spot for ad inserts (inferred).

### 2. Competitors

| Product | Channel | Launched | Scale (googleplay library 11-06) | How it differs from them |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Samsung Smart Switch Mobile | Big-company features / Android | 2013 | 2.46B installs, +16.8M in 7 days | Official, free, and mostly preinstalled, but mainly serves "switching to Galaxy." This app is riding on that name. |
| Google's built-in "Copy data / Android Switch," Apple's Move to iOS | Big-company features | Years | System level | It's built into the phone's setup wizard and free. Its pitch is as a stand-in for people who don't know that and search the store. |
| OPPO Clone Phone / Honor Device Clone / Xiaomi, Huawei, vivo phone transfer | Big-company features | Since 2020 | OPPO 36.6M, Honor 6.15M | Brand-bundled, serves only its own brand |
| Copy My Data(Red Sky Labs / Media Mushroom) | Android / iOS | 2014 | 81.5M, 7 days +79k | Long-running category leader with many reviews (267k). It even borrows the name "Copy My Data". |
| MobileTrans(Wondershare) | Android / desktop | 2021 | 28.2M | Established brand with a desktop version. This app calls itself a "MobileTrans alternative" in its description. |
| Clone Phone - Phone Switch(Cards / m24apps) | Android | 2021 | 18.3M | An old hand on the same template, with in-app purchases up to $99.99 |
| Transfer All Data - PhoneClone(Novus Tech) | Android | 2022 | 13.7M | Same template |
| Copy My Data: Phone Transfer(Technoline) | Android | 2024 | 9.93M | Same-type template, #36 in Japan's Tools Top Grossing |
| Smart Transfer: Copy My Data(DigiGen) | Android | Unknown | 5.45M | Same-type template, #18 in Malaysia's Productivity Top Grossing |
| Smart Switch — Copy My Data(Simple things for life) | Android | 2022 | 4.02M | Almost the same name |
| Smart Switch - File Transfer(Tetra VPN Services) | Android | 2026-04 | 1.69M, 7 days +58k | A same-period entrant, bigger and growing faster than it |
| Smart Switch App: Clone Phone(Rubea) | Android | 2026-07 | 390k | A later follower |
| Phone Clone - Phone Switch(Galixo) | Android | 2026-09 | 490k | Running creatives in the Google ad library (googleads, since 08-11) |
| Smart Switch App: Clone Phone(Sky Vision Apps Lab) | Android | 2026-10-24 | 130k | The newest follower |
| Send Anywhere / SHAREit and similar | Android / iOS | Years | Big | General file-sharing tools that don't package themselves as "full device migration" |

**Verdict: this is a category crowded with near-identical apps.** By installs in the library, it ranks around #15 among similar apps. There are at least 10 apps with the "Smart Switch / Copy My Data" names that are bigger and came earlier.

### 3. Where users come from

1. **Store search + name-piggybacking ASO (confirmed):** Every regional localized title starts with "Smart Switch". Package names are stuffed with keywords like phone clone / smart transfer / smart switch / data transfer, and the description borrows MobileTrans. The stores where it charted (Korea, Japan, Germany, France, Italy, Hong Kong) are places with lots of Samsung phones, strong demand for device switching, and high value per install.

2. **Paid acquisition: unconfirmed.** Neither it nor its developer shows up in our Meta, TikTok (Europe), or Google ad library tracking. Absence there doesn't rule out spend. Galixo, a similar app, has running creatives in the Google ad library, which shows that people in this category buy Google app ads (UAC). Its 06-29 and 07-13 single-day jumps of 2.5–42k look like paid push, but there's no evidence.

3. **Developer portfolio (existence confirmed, cross-promotion unverified):** Hi-Shot Inc has 4 apps in the library, roughly 25.5M installs combined: Font Keyboard 16M, QR Scanner 7.89M, Photo Video File Recovery 560k. AppBrain and AppGazers record 8–9 apps in total. Studios like this often use older apps' ad placements to cross-promote new ones, but that's unverified.

4. **Content and creators: none found.** X (x-radar, last 30 days) has zero posts, TikTok search returns nothing, and there's no media or blog coverage.

5. **Timing:** 9–October is new-phone launch season (iPhone, Galaxy, Pixel), but its curve shows no clear lift during 9–October, so timing doesn't seem to be a factor.

### 4. Why it worked (and how far it went)

- "Smart Switch" is a huge brand search term: Samsung's official app adds 16.8M installs a week. The official app mainly serves people switching to a Galaxy, so everyone else searching the term spills over to the same-named third-party apps.

- By localizing the title in multiple languages to capture brand searches country by country, it reached #95–109 on the Korean Productivity Top Free chart and #33 on Top Grossing (Korea is Samsung's home market).

- Phone-switching tools have a natural one-time high intent: users need it once but badly right now, so they'll watch ads and pay a one-time $17–$30 for unlimited transfers.

- Behind it is a studio with a mature pipeline (the same "tool + ads + high-priced in-app purchase" template across QR, keyboard, recovery, and switching), so the marginal cost of a new app is low.

- But it **never took off** : 4–6 thousand installs a day, 1M cumulative over half a year. AppGazers estimates in-app purchases under $5K a month. Tetra VPN Services, which entered the same period, is bigger and growing faster.

### 5. Differentiation

**Almost no product-level differentiation.** Features, screenshot copy, IAP pricing, and so on match a dozen similar apps, most likely the same switching SDK or template. The only real difference is in **distribution** : a localized "Smart Switch" brand-term title in each country plus keyword-stuffed package names. That's why it got volume, but since anyone can do this, it earns a "decent mid-tier spot" rather than a lead.

### 6. How visible it is

Hardly anyone knows about it: no public revenue, no media or X discussion, it only appears on APK mirror sites and data sites like AppBrain and AppGazers. But the category itself is already crowded, and "nobody's talking about it" doesn't mean there's an opening.

### 7. What to borrow

- Use the names of big-company preinstalled apps as keywords to catch the search traffic from people whose official app doesn't work or can't be found, and localize the brand term into each store's title (Korean, Japanese, German, ...).

- One-time, high-intent tasks (switching phones, recovering photos) suit "ads + high-priced one-time IAP". Pick stores with high Samsung share and high ad CPMs (Korea, Japan, Western Europe).

- One studio, one template, spread across multiple tool categories, with older apps' traffic feeding new ones.

- Risk: using third-party trademarks in titles can get you delisted by Google for "impersonation" or "misleading" content. The August rename and reset of the listing date may be related (unverified).

### 8. Uncertain

- The actual launch date (estimated 2026–April 3) and the reason for the August rename and listing-date reset.

- Whether there's paid acquisition and how much; the source of the 06-29 and 07-13 jumps.

- Revenue: there's tension between #33 on Korea's Top Grossing and AppGazers' "under $5K / month"; ad revenue is completely unknown.

- Few ratings: is this due to per-store display, or were the ratings reset?
