# How a cleaner app became your phone's home screen: where Phone Cleaner Home App's 750k installs came from

**What it is** An Android home-screen launcher sold as a "phone cleaner." Once installed, it replaces your home screen and makes money from full-screen ads.

**Why it's taking off** Starting in September it scaled in waves in cheap-acquisition markets like Poland, Italy, Brazil, Turkey and Kazakhstan. Users are mostly older people scared by "your phone is infected" prompts. Once it's set as the home screen, it's hard to remove, and they see ads all day.

**C** **How you could approach it** Copying the hijacked-home-screen approach isn't recommended. What's worth borrowing: validate with a small budget in cheap second-tier markets, use one codebase to test themes quickly, and build a home screen or widget that users open on their own many times a day.

C grade: the playbook isn't secret. In 2026 years, over twenty clones have appeared. What makes money is a paid-acquisition team with a network of burner accounts, scare-tactic creatives, and the stamina to survive bans. Monetizing by taking over the home screen also risks Google Play removal, so a small team following this isn't worth it. Few people know about it yet

Phone Cleaner Home App has been live for three and a half months and has reached 750k installs on Google Play. Its cleaning features are no different from dozens of similar apps or the ones built into the system. What's actually making money is something else: once installed, it takes over your home screen, so every app you open is another chance to show an ad. Below: how it grew, where the money comes from, how many others are doing the same thing, and whether you should follow.

### A person who thought their carrier was broken

On Nov 1, a Brazilian user gave it 5 stars on Google Play. The review reads like a cry for help: "I want to know why my phone has so many ads... I tried to call someone and WhatsApp closed, and the ads came up. I'm about to give up on TIM, I've been on this line for almost 15 years, and now it's too hard to use. Please help." TIM is a Brazilian carrier. He didn't realize the app was showing the ads. He thought his SIM was faulty, and he still gave the culprit a high rating.

The same day, a US user's one-star review was much clearer: "Warning: malware, don't install. It abuses its high permissions to hide itself... basically every app you open triggers an ad, and it hides many of your original apps and shortcuts." Below it, steps for uninstalling in safe mode.

Scrolling further back: on Oct 16, a Polish review got 24 "helpful" votes: "Why is my phone acting weird, constantly popping up saying I have a virus, and I can't get into Facebook or Google." On Oct 4, a Brazilian review with 36 likes: "It cleans nothing! It must be a virus dressed up as a cleaning tool." (Google Play reviews, pulled 11-06)

That's this app's users and its business.

### What it actually is

The store description is blunt: "To get you to what you need fastest, Phone Cleaner Home App replaces your standard home screen." Junk cleaning, large-file finding, similar-photo finding and storage breakdowns are everywhere on Android. Files by Google and the phone makers' built-in storage tools do the same.

So it's really a launcher, and cleaning is just the excuse to install it. Once a user sets it as the default home screen, every return to the home screen and every app launch becomes an ad slot. Plus, people who don't know their phones can't figure out how to switch back, so it stays installed. It has no in-app purchases, the store listing marks it "contains ads," and a third-party estimate puts October in-app revenue at under $5,000 (AppGazers). The money is almost all from ads.

Most positive reviews are one or two words like "good," "ok," "super," "Thank you Sir 👍." Add the 5-star review that blamed the carrier, and the user profile is clear: older people who aren't comfortable with phones, easily frightened by "your phone is infected" messages.

### Why now: volume that comes in waves

| Timeline | Total installs |
|---|---|
| Aug 13 | About 500 |
| Aug 25 | About 5,400 |
| Sep 16 | About 79k |
| Oct 4 | About 250k |
| Oct 21 | About 540k |
| Nov 6 | 752k |

8–October figures are third-party estimates (AppstoreSpy). Nov 6 is the actual Google Play number. Over the last 7 days it added about 120k, roughly 17k a day. Rating count rose from 2,822 in Oct 29 to 4,172 in Nov 6, with an average around 4.0.

In its first month it barely moved. Around Sep 10 it suddenly added 16k in a day. Early October it added over 70k in a day, then settled at ten to twenty thousand a day. It never had a viral video, and I found no media coverage or social discussion. Searches only turn up APK download sites. This isn't gradual organic growth. It's step-function growth, which looks like paid acquisition: turn on a budget, and volume jumps a level (inferred).

The charts it's on tell the same story: Poland Tools free chart #21–37, Italy #60–79, Sweden #41–105, Brazil and Turkey past #150–200, Poland overall chart #186–200 (Google Play charts, 10-29–11-06). Third-party charts also show Kazakhstan Tools #9 (Appfigures) and Belarus Tools #8 (Sensor Tower). It has no chart placement in the US or UK. Every market it's in is a cheap second-tier market with a low bar for category charts. Many reviews mention "virus," so people installing it were probably pulled in by "phone infected"-style scare ads (inferred; which platforms and what creatives is not visible in public ad libraries).

### Behind it is a pipeline

The developer display name is Animeni. The legal name in the store's developer info is a US individual, and the contact email is a Gmail under another person's name. The three don't match, and I found no trace of this person doing development online. It looks like a bought or rented individual developer account (unverified).

The same account also publishes PDF Reader Home App (launched March, 985k installs, #4 on Poland's Productivity free chart) and Loan EMI Calculator (launched August, 94k). Together they have 1.83M installs. The PDF app worked first, and cleaning was the next theme to swap in.

Looking wider, there's a whole family of apps on the same template. Privacy policies sit on a random cloudfront subdomain (Phone Cleaner's reads "last revised 2021 Jul 2," five years before the app), contacts are all Gmail, titles are all "XX Home App," and descriptions all include the "replaces your standard home screen" line. I can link about a dozen accounts: QuickRecover HomeApp for photo recovery (launched 2025 September, 2.36M), RestoreMate (880k), RecoverNow HomeApp (440k), then QR code, PDF, cleaning and loan calculator apps. From the outside I can't tell whether one studio runs them all with burner accounts or several teams share one outsourcer or monetization partner. What's clear is that from 2025 autumn they rotated theme after theme, and Phone Cleaner is just one of them.

### Who it's competing with

The "cleaner + home screen" combo wasn't invented here, and it's already crowded:

| Product | Launched | Installs | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| IntelliClean Launcher(Rachidsoft) | 2025-09 | 3.09M | Same playbook, earlier start |
| Phone Cleaner & Launcher(Indiaway) | 2026-01 | 2.17M | Same playbook, +120k in 7 days |
| Total Cleaner: Home Launcher(Dev Rez) | 2026-03 | 1.4M | Same playbook, also hired TikTok creators |
| JunkRemover Launcher / Clean Box | 2026-07 / 03 | 1.23M / 1.21M | Same playbook |
| Cleanup Master, Clean Storage Home App | 2026-08 / 09 | 520k / 42k | Sister shells on the same template |
| Cleanup (Codeway), AI Cleaner (iKame) | 2020 / 2026-03 | 36.5M / 11M | Legit cleaner apps, subscription-based, no home screen takeover |
| Files by Google, built-in phone-maker cleaners | Preinstalled | Billions of devices | Free, no ads, same features |

Apps launched in 2026 with both "clean" and "home / launcher" in the title: 22 on Google Play. New apps with launcher or home app in the title ran 5–10 to 19 a month through October (Google Play, 11-06). It got in not because it does better than others, but because it rode the wave and bought traffic in cheap markets.

### Where the risk is

Google Play's ads policy doesn't allow showing ads outside the app or when the user isn't using it, and it doesn't allow misleading installs. These apps push the edge: they claim the launcher is the app itself, so the ads count as "in-app." Reviews calling it "malware" or "can't uninstall" or "hides my apps" will eventually get reported and flagged by security software. RecoverNow HomeApp, same template, has added nothing in the last 7 days, which could mean paused spend or enforcement (unverified). Spreading across burner accounts always depends on one account getting banned not taking down the whole operation.

### If it were you

**Verdict** : Worth understanding as a paid-acquisition business, but not recommended to follow. The playbook has no secret. Over twenty clones appeared in a year, and the money goes to teams with burner accounts, scare-tactic creatives in second-tier markets, and the stamina to survive bans. It depends on hijacking users' home screens, not on the product itself.

**Who it suits** : Teams already doing Android utility paid acquisition, with mature monetization SDKs and multiple developer accounts, who can accept removal risk. For them, this is one more theme to swap in.

**Who it doesn't suit** : Indie developers and small teams that have never run paid acquisition, anyone with only one developer account (one ban and it's all gone), and anyone who cares about their reputation and the safety of their Google Play account.

**How to do it (if you must)** : Borrow only the compliant half. First, run small budgets in cheap, low-bar markets like Poland, Italy, Turkey and Kazakhstan to test retention and monetization, then decide whether to move into expensive markets. Second, use one codebase to test themes quickly, rotating PDF, QR, cleaning and calculator. Third, understand that how many times a user opens the app per day caps ad revenue: build a home screen, lock-screen widget or notification-bar tool that's good enough for users to open many times a day on their own. Don't hijack home screens, hide other apps, or show "infected" warnings.

**How to acquire users** : For this type of product, paid acquisition is the only route. Store search depends on generic title keywords ("Phone Cleaner"), with no content, community or word of mouth.

**When to get in** : There's no window left to race. This wave is already full.

**What would mean you're wrong** : ① By next February, it and its peers (IntelliClean, Total Cleaner, Phone Cleaner & Launcher) are still around, weekly additions haven't dropped, showing Google tolerates this route and paid acquisition still pencils out. ② Some peers move to legit subscriptions with clearly better ratings and reviews, and keep growing, showing "cleaner + home screen" can become a clean product. ③ Conversely, if this batch of Home Apps gets removed in bulk over a few weeks, the route is closed.

Where users come from

- Inferred **Paid acquisition / coercive installs (tier-2 markets)** : about 5,000 installs in the first month, ramping to 1~20k a day from 9-10; it charted only in Poland, Italy, Sweden, Brazil, Turkey, Kazakhstan and Belarus, none in the US or UK. Reviews keep saying "virus", "virus warning", "can't uninstall", which looks like scare-ad traffic. Meta, TikTok and Google ad libraries have no record of it (not on our tracking list).

- **Verified** **Low-bar category chart exposure** : Poland Tools Top Free 21~37, Italy 60~79, Sweden 41~105; Poland overall chart 186~200 (chart_rank 10-29~11-06); Kazakhstan Tools #9 (Appfigures)

- Inferred **Store search (generic keyword title)** : the title "Phone Cleaner Home App" is itself a generic search term; how much it contributes is unverified

- **Verified** **Sock-puppet account network** : a dozen-plus accounts share the same cloudfront privacy page, Gmail address and Home App titles (Animeni, TANIATECH, Access Service,s, Interior, Alpha Black Car, etc.). Animeni's legal name and email don't match.

- Inferred **Creators / influencers / media** : x-radar shows 90 posts in the last 0 days; TikTok search doesn't return it, and the web only has APK sites and chart-listing sites.

## Why Phone Cleaner Home App got traction

> Channel: Google Play | Developer: Animeni | Launched 2026-07-22 | Category Tools | Contains ads, no IAP | Research date 2026-11-06

### Bottom line

The product itself has nothing new. It's one build from a "XX Home App" pipeline template: it uses "phone cleaning" as the hook, asks users to set it as the default home screen after install, and then shows an ad every time they open an app. The volume was ramped stepwise from mid-September in mid-value, cheap-to-acquire markets like Poland, Italy, Sweden, Brazil, Turkey and Kazakhstan, most likely paid acquisition, and specifically coercive installs (lots of "virus" and "can't uninstall" in reviews). It rode the low-barrier Tools category chart, which is why it got picked up.

### 1. Data

| items | Numbers | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Cumulative global installs | 752,133 (store tier 500K+) | googleplay library app_snap, 2026-11-06 |
| New in the last 7 days | +120,099 (about 17k/day) | Google Play library app_profile |
| Score | 2,822 → 4,172 (10-29 → 11-06, +96~212 per day), average rating 4.0~4.18 | googleplay library app_snap |
| install curve since launch | 8-13 about 500 installs → 8-25 about 5,400 → 9-09 about 12k, then scaled up: 9-16 79k, 10-04 250k, 10-21 540k, 10-27 630k | app_day_ext (AppstoreSpy estimate) |
| Category chart | Poland Tools Top Free 21~37, Italy 60~79, Sweden 41~105, Turkey 147~196, Brazil 160~197; Spain, Japan and the Netherlands occasionally 180~198; Poland overall chart 186~200 (10-30~11-04) | googleplay library chart_rank, 10-29~11-06 |
| Stores not in the library | Kazakhstan Tools #9 (Appfigures), #14 (Similarweb, 11-02); Belarus Tools #8 (Sensor Tower) | Web search result snippet |
| Version | 10-29 is v14 (updated 10-13), 10-27 v15; in reviews, 9-12 already shows v12,10-08, and v13 | app_snap, reviews |
| Revenue | No IAP; AppGazers estimates October IAP < $5K, downloads 75k~350k (the download range doesn't match our measured October figure of about 460k; it's low) | appgazers.com |

The curve's shape: after launch it barely moved for the first month (about 5,000 installs), then from September 10 it jumped 16k in a day, September 16 25k, October 4 72k, and has since settled at 1~20k a day. With no content buzz at all, the growth comes in stepped surges, the shape of acquisition being switched on, not organic growth. Tier-1 countries like the US and UK never charted; only the cheap-to-acquire tier-2 markets did.

### 2. What it actually is

- The store description says it outright: "To provide the fastest possible access, Phone Cleaner Home App **replaces your standard home screen** ." The cleaning features (junk files, large files, similar photos, storage overview) are the most common set on Android; the system and Files by Google both have them.

- The real business structure is **cleaning bait plus default home screen plus ads** . A US one-star review (11-01) says: "WARNING: MALWARE - DO NOT INSTALL The app abuses it's elevated privleges to hide itself. It acts as a really strong Adware, since it displays an ad basically everytime you open an app. It also hides many apps and shortcuts", and then explains how to uninstall it in safe mode. A review from 11-05 says: "it takes control of my phone".

- Other countries are the same: Poland "złośliwy adware" (malicious adware), "ciągle pojawia się że jest wirus" (keeps showing a virus warning); Brazil "anúncios pega o controle do celular e não deixa desinstalar" (ads take over the phone and won't let you uninstall), "é vírus essa coisa"; Germany "zuviel werbung" (too many ads); Turkey "virüsü temizle" (remove the virus). (Google Play reviews API, pulled 2026-11-06)

- Most positive reviews are one or two words like "good", "ok", "super", "Thank you Sir 👍"; judging by the tone, the users skew older and less tech-savvy, which fits people who were scared into installing a "cleaning tool".

- The data-safety statement says "no data shared with third parties" and only device IDs are collected for analytics. But the app is full of ads, and ad SDKs usually share the advertising ID, so the declaration and reality probably don't match (SDK list not verified).

- The privacy policy is a boilerplate template on cloudfront that reads "Last Revised: July 2nd, 2021", five years older than the app.

### 3. Who's behind it: a "Home App" template matrix

- The developer display name is Animeni, but the legal name in the store's "About the developer" is a US individual (DAVID JEROME KATAJA JR), and the contact email belongs to yet another name (pauldaughtersbanz@gmail.com). Name, email and brand don't match. Searches find no trace of this person doing any development; it looks like a bought or rented individual developer account (unverified).

- Other apps from the same account (googleplay library, 11-06):
    - **PDF Reader Home App** (com.pdf.pdfviewer.reader.allfile, 2026-03-27): 985k installs, +124k over 7 days, Poland Productivity Top Free #4; on Appfigures, Austria Productivity #2, ranked just behind ChatGPT
    - Loan EMI Calculator (2026-08-20): 94k, +31k over 7 days
    - Also Orvanta and Solvexa (privacy pages on sites.google.com, same email)
    - The three in the library total 1.83M installs

- **The same template** (privacy pages all `https://d<random>.cloudfront.net/privacy-policy`, Gmail addresses, generic package names, titles like "XX Home App / HomeApp", descriptions containing "replaces your standard home screen"). Matches in the googleplay library app table:
    - Access Service,s: QuickRecover HomeApp (2025-92.4M), QR & Barcode Scanner HomeApp (2026-4.35M)
    - Interior: RestoreMate–Home App (2025-9.88M)
    - mubila the blogger: RecoverNow HomeApp (2025-9.44M)
    - Alpha Black Car Services Inc 2: Cleanup Master (2026-8.52M), PDF Reader Hub (190k)
    - TANIATECH: Clean Storage Home App (2026-09-1.84M), PDF Scanner Home App (2026-09-921k)
    - Miguel Freitas.:Clean Sweep Launcher(2026-10-22,1,019)
    - OLOA games, One Text Initiative, Piramit, CoderSoftech and others' PDF, calculator and step-counter apps use the same cloudfront privacy pages

- So this is a studio, or a contractor / monetization shop, batch-spreading "feature bait + Home App" across many sock-puppet accounts. Starting from the "Photo Recovery HomeApp" in September 2025, it kept swapping topics: PDF, QR codes, cleaning, loan calculators. Phone Cleaner Home App is just one of those topics.

### 4. Competitors

| Competitors | Where | Launched | Scale | How it differs |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Cleanup: Phone Storage Cleaner(Codeway) | Android / iOS | Around 2020 | 36.5M Play installs, Top Grossing #1 in Tools across several countries (googleplay library; see the same batch's play_com.cleaner.phonemanager.master report) | Subscription monetization, brand paid acquisition, no home screen hijacking |
| AI Cleaner: Clean up Storage(iKame / Begamob) | Android | 2026-03 | 11M, +530k over 7 days, Argentina Tools Top Grossing #3 | A legit cleaning app with subscriptions + ads |
| IntelliClean Launcher / JunkCleaner Launcher(Rachidsoft) | Android | 2025-09 / 2026-06 | 3.09M / 900k | The exact same play (cleaning + launcher), started earlier |
| Phone Cleaner & Launcher(Indiaway Solution) | Android | 2026-01 | 2.17M, 7 days +120k | Same playbook |
| Total Cleaner: Home Launcher(Dev Rez) | Android | 2026-03 | 1.4M, +150k over 7 days; TikTok has creator collab videos tagged #totalcleanerpartner | Same play, with creator content on top |
| JunkRemover Launcher(QFD) / Clean Box: Home & Storage(ECCCO) | Android | 2026-07 / 2026-03 | 1.23M / 1.21M | Same playbook |
| CleanMate, Haven Launcher & Phone Cleaner, Cleaner - Storage & Home Tools (two apps with the same name), Astar Launcher: Cleaner, etc. | Android | 2026-04~10 | 30k~330k | Same play, later |
| Clean Storage Home App(TANIATECH)/ Cleanup Master | Android | 2026-09 / 08 | 42k / 520k | Sister shells on the same template |
| Files by Google, storage cleaners built into phone makers' systems | Big-company features | Preinstalled | Billions of devices | Free, no ads, same features |
| AVG / Norton Cleaner | Android | Years | 100M+ | Brand security vendors |

Apps in the library whose titles contain both clean and home/launcher and launched in 2026: 22 (googleplay library). New apps with launcher or home app in the title come out at 10~19 a month (2026-05~10). This play is already crowded.

### 5. Growth tactics

| Channel | Evidence | Confirmed? |
|---|---|---|
| Paid acquisition / coercive installs (tier-2 markets) | Only about 5,000 installs in the first month, ramping to 1~20k a day from 9-10. It charted only in CPI-cheap markets like Poland, Italy, Sweden, Brazil, Turkey, Kazakhstan and Belarus, none in the US or UK. There's no content buzz. Reviews keep saying "virus", "virus warning" and "can't uninstall", which looks like scare-ad bait ("your phone is infected"). Our Meta, TikTok and Google ad libraries don't record it (it's not on our tracking list, and not finding it doesn't mean it didn't spend). | Unconfirmed (strong inference) |
| Low-bar category chart exposure | Poland Tools Top Free #21~37, Poland overall chart #186~200 (chart_rank). Charting brought in some organic store traffic on top. | Confirmed |
| Store search | The title "Phone Cleaner Home App" is itself a generic search term; how much it contributes is unverified | Unconfirmed |
| Sock-puppet matrix spreads the risk | A dozen-plus accounts on the same template, dozens of apps; one takedown doesn't affect the whole operation | Confirmed (template link); whether it's the same operator is unverified |
| Content / creators / media / X / Reddit | x-radar over the last 90 days: 0 posts; TikTok search results show Total Cleaner, Cleaner Guru and other rivals' videos, not this one; the web only has auto-aggregated APK sites and Softonic | Confirmed none |

**Where the money comes from** : no in-app purchases, all ads. Once set as the default home screen, every return to the home screen and every app launch is an ad impression opportunity (review quote: "displays an ad basically everytime you open an app"). Per-user ad impressions far exceed a typical cleaner app, and users can't uninstall it easily, which artificially stretches retention. So in tier-two markets with cheap CPI, ad revenue per install may cover acquisition cost (specific eCPM and CPI not verified).

### 6. Why it took off

1. **Business structure** : uses "cleaning," a need that never goes away, as the hook. After install it becomes the default home screen, turning a single install into a long-term, high-frequency ad slot.

2. **Market selection** : avoids expensive markets like the US and UK, buys installs in Poland, Italy, Brazil, Turkey and Kazakhstan, and gets into the top 40 of the Tools category on a small budget.

3. **Templates + a stable of shell accounts** : same code, same privacy page; swap the theme and the account and you have a new app (PDF, photo recovery, QR codes, loan calculators...). PDF Reader Home App already proved this route (985K installs), and cleaning is the next theme.

4. **User profile** : reviews suggest many users aren't tech-savvy. Scare-style ads like "your phone has a virus" push them to install, and they don't know how to uninstall.

### 7. Differentiation

No differentiation for users: its cleaning features match dozens of cleaner apps and Files by Google. The "cleaner + home screen" combo was used earlier by Rachidsoft (2025-09), Indiaway (2026-01) and Dev Rez (2026-03). What sets it apart from peers is only operational: buying installs in tier-two markets and batch-copying through the "Home App" shell template. Those explain why it worked, but none of it is unique to this app.

### 8. What to borrow

- "Bait feature + default home screen" can push ad revenue per user very high. The mechanism is worth understanding, but it relies on hijacking the home screen and scare-based acquisition. It carries Google Play policy risk (off-app ads, misleading installs) and damages reputation. Not recommended to copy.

- The legitimate parts are worth borrowing: test volume first in tier-two markets with cheap CPI and low chart thresholds, and use one template to test themes quickly.

- Signals to watch: titles containing "Home App / Launcher", privacy pages hosted on cloudfront or sites.google, Gmail contact addresses, flat first month followed by stepped scaling. These are mostly this type.

### 9. Uncertain

- Which ad platform it bought on and what the creatives looked like: none of the three ad libraries index it.

- Whether the accounts Animeni, TANIATECH, Alpha Black Car and Access Service are run by the same operator, or share an outsourcing shop or monetization SDK.

- Ad eCPM and revenue per user, and whether acquisition pays back.

- Whether Google will take it down for off-app ads or malware. The same-template RecoverNow HomeApp shows empty growth over 7 days, so it may have stopped buying, or been actioned (unverified).

- The rating distribution is oddly tidy (10-29 is 217/217/434/434/1519, exactly 1:1:2:2:7). Whether ratings were incentivized or faked is unverified.
