Roku dropped its photo screensaver, and a small team picked up the name, with 5,800 installs landing it on the US Top Grossing chart
What it is A phone app plus a Roku channel that turns your family photos, weather and stock widgets, and birthday and wedding cards into screensavers for your Roku TV.
Why it took off Roku killed Photo Streams in June 2026, and the replacement doesn't start on its own. This app put the dead feature's name straight into its Play title to catch the searches, then charged older families a yearly fee or one-time purchase after a hard 3-day trial paywall. In November Roku announced it was dropping the aquarium screensaver, which pushed "Roku screensaver" into the conversation.
BHow you could follow Don't copy this one app. Copy the method: watch big platforms cut features, and launch in the gap between the announcement and the shutdown using the dead feature's name. The latest case is the Aquatic Life aquarium screensaver, which 12-01 is dropping. Build a Roku channel plus phone setup, let people see it working for free, then charge a yearly fee or a one-time purchase.

A big platform cut a small feature that older people use every day, and the name of that dead feature became a search term nobody owns. "Roku Photo Stream Screensaver" went live less than four months ago. It has 5,835 installs on Google Play (11-06) and already ranks #24 on the US personalization category's Top Grossing chart. Here's how the demand opened up, how the app caught it, where the money comes from, and whether you can follow.
A screensaver that got cut
Since 2022, Roku TVs have had a feature called Photo Streams: upload photos from home, and when the TV sits idle it cycles through them, from weddings and grandkids to last year's Christmas. In December 2025 Roku announced it would fold this into a new app called Backdrops (Mashable reported in 12-05). By June 2026 it was actually gone from devices. Cord Cutters News wrote on June 13 that many people "one day found it missing," and that Backdrops doesn't start by itself; you have to open it by hand every time. For a lot of people, "a screensaver you have to launch manually" is not a screensaver.
Roku's Reddit community kept filling with posts like "Photo Streams is dead" and "Backdrops completely ruins the screensaver," complaining that portrait photos get forced into landscape crops and that Google Photos connections spin forever. What these people want is simple: the way it worked before, when the TV is idle it shows my family photos.
Five weeks later, in 2026 Jul 18, an app appeared on Google Play called "Roku Photo Stream Screensaver."
What it is
A phone app plus a Roku channel. On the phone you pick photos and layout (full-screen or collage), then layer on widgets: weather, stocks, crypto prices, horoscopes, Bible verses, countdowns, a word of the day. You can also make birthday, wedding, and anniversary card screens, manage several Rokus remotely, and share a setup with family. The channel installs on the Roku, and when the TV is idle it plays whatever you configured on your phone.
The store's "suitable for" line reads: family photo frame, holiday decoration, special celebrations, digital home.
Why it took off: the name and the timing
The name. The feature that was cut was called Photo Streams, and its Play title was Roku Photo Stream. Search "roku photo screensaver" on Play and it ranks first (11-06). The same product is called the neutral "Photo Screensaver for TV" on iOS and "Photo Screensaver" in the Roku channel store. Apple's review is strict about trademarks; Android's is looser, so on Android it put Roku in the title (inferred; all three platforms share one privacy policy domain, photoscreen.site).
Nobody is competing for it. Roku's official Backdrops is free but clunky; the rest are old Roku channels: PhotoView only does Google Photos, Fotum reads USB drives and Dropbox, and there's an open-source Google Photos channel. None of them have phone-side setup, a widget, or greeting cards. On Google Play, 11-06 was the only app I could find that does "Roku photo screensaver."
It got another push this week. Around Nov 2, a line popped up on Roku TV screensavers: "Starting Dec. 1, 2026 the Aquatic Life screensaver will no longer be available." Jim Sachs, the aquarium screensaver's creator, withdrew his license in protest over Fox's acquisition of Roku (Cord Cutters News, ZDNet 11-03, CNET). A protest wave followed on TikTok: @i_scream_a_lot4's video got 2.48M views, and @st4rsdecay's petition video got 670k views. The same week also brought mom tip videos on turning a Roku into a holiday photo wall.
"Roku screensaver" suddenly became a topic, and this app's numbers picked up speed in the same days:
| Date | installs (Google Play) | Score | US personalization Top Grossing chart |
|---|---|---|---|
| 10-29 | 4,779 | 76 | #50 |
| 11-03 | 5,281 | 83 | #38 |
| 11-05 | 5,360 | 93 | #28 |
| 11-06 | 5,835 | 99 | #24 |
11-06 daily installs rose by 475 times, from 9 averaging 70 to 80 a day in October. It first charted on the Top Free chart at #162 on 11-04, and hit #87 by 11-06. We found no video naming this app, so the timing lines up but the causation is inferred.
Where the money comes from: a hard paywall
A tiny install count getting onto a grossing chart comes down to price per user. It hits you with a paywall at the start, a trial of only 3 days. The price list (Play, listed at $4.99–69.99): weekly and monthly subscriptions at $4.99, yearly at $23.99 / $29.99 / $39.99, lifetime one-time purchase at $49.99 / $69.99. On the US personalization grossing chart, the two apps just above and below it have 15M and 28.5M installs. The bar to chart in that category isn't high. I haven't verified how much money #24 represents, but each paying user is paying a lot, and there's no reason to doubt that.
Who pays? Reviews mention holiday screensavers, weddings, and setting things up remotely for family. One Play user wrote: "You can make your own screensaver for holidays and all kinds of occasions... I love it" (K@thie Condon, 9-07). An iOS user said their fiancé couldn't figure it out ("settings keep not saving, it needs to be dumber-proof"), but "we all think this app is super cool" (10-10).
Nearly every bad review is about the same thing: the paywall comes too late and too abruptly.
"Takes you all the way to 'pick photos for your screensaver,' and then the only option is to subscribe after a measly 3-day trial. How is 3 days enough to judge whether a widget is worth a yearly fee?" (David Entsminger, Google Play, 9-20)
"I haven't tapped any payment on my phone, and if I had it would have been an accident. Can I cancel the trial? I urgently need to know." (Bailey, Google Play, 10-08)
"I won't pay over $15 a year... it makes you upload all your files and photos before it tells you it costs money." (iOS, "Too much money," 11-02)
The developer's reply to the first review said a one-time lifetime purchase would be added, and the price list does now include a lifetime tier. The rating is 4.4,1 stars, with about 11% of 99 reviews at 11 stars.
Who's behind it
The Play developer is listed as Apex Point Management LLC, at a registered-agent address in Flushing, New York. The phone number is a Pakistani number starting with +92, and the support email is a personal Gmail. The iOS version is credited to a different person. The developer page lists only two apps, the other being a travel packing checklist. It looks like a small team (inferred). The version is stuck at 1.0.3 (no updates after 9-24).
The iOS version launched Aug 20 and already has 192 ratings at 4.4 stars, more than Play's 99. The bulk of this business is probably on iOS and the Roku channel (inferred; install counts for those two aren't visible).
Can you ride it?
What you can learn is the playbook, not this app itself.
- Build your own Roku photo screensaver: the keyword is already taken, so a second entrant won't get #1 for "roku photo screensaver." The openings are its weak spots: the paywall comes too early and too hard, the trial is only 3 days, and setup is hard. But you'd be fighting an established player for a small slice of search volume.
- Take the next feature that gets cut: the Aquatic Life aquarium screensaver 12-01 is shutting down, and the TikTok emotion is already there. Build an aquarium or ambient-motion screensaver Roku channel (the creator withdrew the license, so you can't use the original assets; make your own or buy assets), with a phone-side setup, charging a yearly fee or one-time purchase. The hard part is timing: Roku channels need approval, and getting live before 12-01 is a gamble.
- Switch platforms: the same thing happens on other TV platforms too: Fire TV, Google TV's ambient mode, Samsung Frame, tighter Google Photos API access. The name of a cut feature is the search term, and the launch window sits between the announcement and the actual shutdown.
The risks are also clear: the Android title uses someone else's trademark, so it could be taken down or renamed at any time. If Roku someday fixes Backdrops' auto-start, demand shrinks. And the whole pie is not big; it wouldn't be surprising for one app to top out at a few thousand installs.
If it were you
Verdict: worth trying, but don't expect to copy this one app. The valuable part is the method: watch big platforms cut features and catch the name before the shutdown. The most recent opportunity is the 12-01 aquarium screensaver.
Who it suits: 1–2 people who can write Roku channels (BrightScript / SceneGraph) or can learn in two weeks, who can build a phone-side configuration app, and who aren't scared of support volume from older users.
Who it doesn't suit: people aiming for a large market; people uncomfortable with trademark edge-cases or takedown risk; people who can only build phone apps and can't handle the TV side.
How to build it: the Roku channel handles display, the phone app handles photo picking and setup. Let people run the screensaver free first to see it working, then charge $20–40 a year or $50–70 one-time. Collecting money a step later than this app does directly addresses its biggest complaint. Have holiday, birthday, and wedding templates ready; the Christmas season is the peak.
How to get users: store search is the main channel. Write the title and description around the feature name people are actually searching for. Then go to the comments on those TikTok protest videos, Roku's Reddit community, and Roku user groups on Facebook, and answer "what's the alternative?" This crowd skews toward parents and grandparents, so tutorial videos will beat ads (inferred).
Deadline: for the aquarium wave, the channel needs to be installable before 12-01, at the latest before Christmas. For the photo-screensaver wave, interest fades after Christmas.
Signs you misread it: ① Roku restores Backdrops' auto-start, or swaps Aquatic Life for a similar free screensaver, and the demand disappears. ② This app gets taken down from Play or forced to rename because of the Roku in its title, showing the Android trademark route doesn't work. ③ After Christmas its US grossing rank drops out of the top #50, showing this was a one-time holiday spike, not sustained demand. ④ Conversely, if three to five "Roku screensaver" apps appear on Play in December, the gap has already been noticed. Don't crowd in.

Why Roku Photo Stream Screensaver (com.photoscreensaver.app) broke out
Channel: Google Play | Developer: Apex Point Management LLC (a registered-agent address in Flushing, New York; contact phone +92 Pakistani number; support email [email protected]) | Store launch 2026-07-18 (Apptopia records 2026-07-20) | Research day 2026-11-06
Bottom line
Roku itself killed the 'set personal photos as screensaver' feature: Photo Streams ended in late January 2026, and its replacement, Backdrops, only starts after 30 minutes of idle time by default, drawing heavy user complaints. This app writes the discontinued official feature name "Roku Photo Stream" straight into its Play title and catches people searching for it (on Play, a search for "roku photo screensaver" ranks it first). The users who arrive are mostly middle-aged and older family users. They hit a hard paywall right away with only a 3-day trial, then annual at $23.99–39.99 or one-time at $49.99–69.99. So with just 5.8k installs it reached #24 on the US personalized Top Grossing chart. From 2026-11-02 Roku also announced it would drop the Aquatic Life aquarium screensaver 12-01, sparking protest on TikTok. Combined with people wanting to turn their TVs into holiday photo walls before Christmas, weekly installs and ratings clearly accelerated.
1. Data
- Installs (googleplay library app_day / app_day_ext, AppstoreSpy estimates): 2026-09-10 about 1,025 → 10-01 about 2,526 → 10-29 4,779 → 11-06 5,835. From 9 to October it averaged about 75–95 per day, rising from 11-05 to 11-06, a single-day gain of +475. Over the last 7 days +825.
- Ratings (googleplay library app_snap): 10-29 had 76 reviews, 11-06 had 99; this week it gained +3~6 per day, clearly faster than the prior week (0–2 per day). Histogram [1★11, 2★0, 3★4, 4★10, 5★72]; about 1% of 11-star reviews are complaining about the paywall.
- Chart (googleplay library chart_rank, US Personalization): Top Grossing 10-29 #50 → 10-31 #43 → 11-03 #38 → 11-04 #33 → 11-05 #28 → 11-06 #24; Top Free 11-04 first charted (#162), rising to #11-06 87. Its Top Grossing ranks of #14–98 in the other 104 stores are the same aggregated chart and don't count.
- Reference: the #23 US Personalization Top Grossing app is the Theme/Widget/Icon changer (15M installs), #25 is Letter Fonts (28.5M installs). An app with only 5.8K installs ranking among them means its per-user revenue is very high. That said, the Top Grossing bar in the Personalization category is not high in itself, and actual revenue has not been verified.
- In-app purchases (price list shown on the same App Store page; Play shows $4.99–$69.99): weekly $4.99 (with trial), monthly $4.99, annual $23.99 / $29.99 / $39.99, lifetime $49.99 / $69.99. Version 1.0.3 (no updates since 2026-09-24).
2. Why it took off
- Platform event, wave one: Roku shut Photo Streams down itself. Roku announced on 2025-12 that Photo Streams would be retired at the end of January 2026 years, moving to Backdrops; Mashable also covered it (https://mashable.com/article/roku-kill-photo-streams; Roku support page support.roku.com/article/photo-streams-is-moving-to-backdrop…). Backdrops can show only one album at a time, waits 30 minutes of idle before starting, and has been criticized for cropping and zooming photos and for endless loading. Several threads on Reddit r/Roku: "Photo Streams is dead", "Backdrops completely ruins the screensaver", "Feedback on Backdrops for Roku Devs", "Any Roku screensavers left for Google Photos?". The demand was pushed out by the official platform itself.
- Riding the name for store search: using the dead official feature name as the title. The Play title is literally "Roku Photo Stream Screensaver", the exact feature name users miss and search for. Reading the Play search page via jina, "roku photo screensaver" returns it as the first result. Google results also show Play links carrying utm_term="roku photo stream screensaver". On iOS the same product is named neutrally "Photo Screensaver for TV" (id6763088329, developer credited to Viacheslav Ryabinin, same photoscreen.site privacy policy); on the Roku Channel Store it's "Photo Screensaver". It looks like the Android listing deliberately used the Roku trademark to capture search traffic; Apple's review is stricter, so it didn't name it that way.
- The audience will pay, and the paywall is hard. Reviews mention weddings, birthdays, holiday screensavers, and setting it up remotely for family ("over 50+ crew"), so the users are families and older adults who aren't price-sensitive about $30–70. Complaints say you have to go through selecting photos before the paywall appears, with only a 3-day trial; some say they were charged without tapping pay (Play review by David Entsminger 2026-09-20, Bailey 2026-10-08; iOS "Too much money"). That is the source of the high ARPU. The developer replied that a one-time purchase is coming, and the price list already has a lifetime tier.
- Platform event, wave two: the Aquatic Life aquarium screensaver is pulled + holiday season. Around 2026-11-02, Roku posted a notice on the screensaver: "Starting Dec. 1, 2026 the Aquatic Life screensaver will no longer be available", because the creator Jim Sachs objected to Fox acquiring Roku and withdrew his licence (Cord Cutters News 2026-11-03, ZDNet 2026-11-03, CNET). Between 11-02 and 11-06 a wave of protest videos appeared on TikTok: @i_scream_a_lot4 got 2.48M views on one video, and @st4rsdecay's petition video got 670K views. The same week there were also "turn your Roku into a holiday photo wall" MOM HACK-style videos (@onlyashleymarie 11-04, about 9.7K views). The "Roku screensaver" topic suddenly drew heavy discussion, and this app's installs and ratings accelerated from 11-03 to 11-06, with its Top Grossing rank climbing from #38 to #24. The timing lines up, but no video was found that names this app directly, so this is an inference.
- Covered on both platforms. The iOS version launched 2026-08-20 (Apptopia), with 192 ratings (4.4), more than Play's 99, suggesting the real home of this may be iOS + the Roku Channel. The iOS version is not in our appstore library, meaning it was not on the tracked charts.

On Play, the only app found that specifically does "Roku photo screensaver + widgets + greeting cards" is this one; no direct copycats yet.
5. Differentiation
- Competitors are either Roku's official free but hard-to-use Backdrops, or old, single-purpose Roku Channel apps. This one is a phone-side setup + Roku Channel display combo: full-screen or collage photos, plus widgets for weather, stocks, crypto prices, zodiac, Bible verses, countdowns, and so on, along with birthday, wedding, and anniversary greeting-card screens, remote management of multiple Rokus, and sharing setups with family.
- What made it break out is not the feature count but the name and timing: it claimed the dead official feature name "Roku Photo Stream" just as Roku kept cutting screensaver features. The feature stacking mainly supports the paywall's perceived value (holiday and wedding occasions make annual plans easy to sell).
6. Visibility and copycats
- Visibility: almost nobody knows about it yet. No public revenue; no media or big X accounts have written about it. Coverage is only about Roku killing the feature (ZDNet's suggested alternatives are YouTube loops and aquarium channels, and it doesn't mention this app). It only has pages on aggregators like Apptopia, AppBrain, and APKPure.
- Copycats: none on Play yet.
VII. What others can borrow
- Watch big-company announcements about killing or downgrading features (Roku, Google TV ambient mode, Fire TV, Samsung Frame, tighter Google Photos API access). The name of the killed feature is a ready-made search term. Launch in the window between the announcement and the shutdown.
- On Android, use the platform and feature name in the title (carries trademark risk); on iOS, use a neutral name to pass review; on TV, use each platform's channel store. One backend for all three.
- Turn a TV into a family photo frame for middle-aged and older households: high-ticket annual or one-time purchase, with holiday, wedding, and birthday templates. Holiday seasons give a natural peak.
- Next window: Aquatic Life 12-01 shut down. Make a "aquarium / ambient screensaver" Roku channel plus a phone config app to catch this wave of TikTok interest.
VIII. Unknowns
- Absolute revenue: the personalized category Top Grossing bar is low, and what #24 earns hasn't been verified.
- Real scale on iOS and the Roku channel. iOS has 192 ratings, likely bigger than Android.
- Are Apex Point Management LLC (Android) and Viacheslav Ryabinin (iOS) the same team? They share photoscreen.site, most likely the same product owner listing under different entities. A recall card says the developer also has a "Roku Wifi Camera / Universal Remote TV" lineup, but checking, the Play developer page only has this app and Smart Trip Packing, so the lineup claim doesn't hold.
- Whether this week's acceleration is from the Aquatic Life news is unconfirmed, only the timing matches. The second half of the TikTok search API timed out, so we couldn't check fully whether any creators name it.
- Whether it runs ads: our ad libraries show no_ads for the list, but not finding ads doesn't mean there are none.
