An AI secretary nobody in the US used: the Korean version hit #3 on the free chart within two weeks
What it is A private AI agent app that calls, pays, orders food and books restaurants and KTX trains for you, rebuilt for Korean certification, payments and local services.
Why it took off In the US, Muse and Instinct had just made "AI that does errands for you" a hot topic, while the Korean big-company equivalents had not launched yet. It is free in Korea and only registers with an invite code, and users can trade code sharing for extra usage. Users and AI tool bloggers spread it on their own.
BHow you can follow it Don't build a general-purpose agent. Pick a market the US products can't get into, and do one high-frequency task people hate doing by phone (cancelling contracts, booking, haggling calls). Copy the invite-only model and the "share a code, get more credits" mechanic, and move before the local super-apps ship similar features.

Pickle is a private AI agent app that calls, orders and books for you. It's a YC alumni project from a Korean founding team. It launched in the US in August and collected only 47 ratings in three months. In mid-October it switched to a version rebuilt for Korea. It is free in Korea, registration requires an invite code, and two weeks later it reached #3 on the Korean App Store free overall chart. The features didn't change; the market and distribution did. The idea of moving a just-hyped US AI category into a country with its own internet ecosystem is worth studying, but copying a general AI agent is too much for a small team.
A call to a hotel made by "Onoda"
In October 2026 29, Japanese travel YouTuber Onoda (小野田) posted a video that opened with: "I overused AI for travel, and something serious happened." He had been using an AI agent to look up a hotel for year-end, and found that the AI had called the hotel by itself:
"Hello, sorry to bother you during your busy time. This is Onoda. I'd like to confirm the check-in on Dec 31..."
The same week, its experience in Korea was completely different: on Oct 30 it reached #5 on the Korean App Store free overall chart and #2 in the Productivity category.
What it is
In one line: you send a message, and it goes and does the errand for you. The Korean store page lists four things:
- Calls on your behalf: changing phone plans, calling customer service, phone-only bookings, requesting refunds. You can watch the call live, and it summarizes afterward.
- Shopping and payments: ordering and paying on stores you already use like Coupang and Daiso Mall, checking delivery, cancelling orders.
- Bookings and tickets: restaurants, hospitals, lodging, flights, KTX. For sold-out seats, it alerts you when someone cancels, or grabs the seat for you directly.
- Scheduling with a friend's Pickle: the two Pickles talk to each other, find a free slot, then book the restaurant.
Anything that spends money or can't be undone waits for your approval first. It also connects to Korean local services like Naver, KakaoTalk, and government 24 (from toris.kr's Instagram bio, 10-26).
How fast it grew
Most of the traffic is on iOS:
| Date | Korean App Store free overall chart | Korea Productivity Free chart |
|---|---|---|
| 10-28 | 23 | 4 |
| 10-30 | 5 | 2 |
| 11-03 | 8 | 2 |
| 11-06 | 3 | 1 |
The Android version only reached Google Play on Oct 19. By 10-29, installs were 800,11-06 to 29,943, up about 29k in a week. The same day it ranked #6 on Korea's Productivity free chart and #37 on the overall apps chart, and #73 on the Productivity Top Grossing chart (Google Play, 11-06). Japan also had some traffic, but only around the hundred-plus ranks of the Productivity chart (iOS Japan Productivity chart ranks 35–64).
One number is unusual: it's #3 on the free overall chart, yet the Korean App Store shows only 57 ratings (11-06). Half of that is that Korean users simply don't leave ratings much. The other half is that many people install it and then get stuck on the "Enter invite code" page (inferred).
The control group is its own US version: launched in Aug 10, and by Nov 6 it had only 47 ratings on the US store.
Why now, why Korea
The US educated the category, and no one in Korea is supplying it yet. In 2026 9, Meta's Muse and Instinct, valued at about $10B, made "AI that calls and does errands for you" a buzzword in the US, and Muse reached 9M installs on Google Play. Korean users had heard of it, but nothing usable existed locally. Kakao's agent inside KakaoTalk only opens closed beta in December and launches next year (Chosun Ilbo, Yonhap 10-13). SKT's 에이닷 call-making feature is still being developed under a government project (ZDNet 10-14). Pickle landed in that gap.
The Korean internet is a whole other system. The CEO's words on Threads: "Korea has security plugins, public certificates, and a dozen payment systems. It's a completely different internet from the US, so we rebuilt for it from the ground up." US products can't get in, not because the models are bad, but because they can't connect to Coupang, can't book KTX, and can't pass local identity verification. That wall keeps Muse out, and it keeps competitors out of Pickle's way.
"Calls for you" is understood in ten seconds. Young people in Japan and Korea mostly dread phone calls. A screen recording of "AI calls customer service to change my plan" needs no explanation and is naturally suited to short video.
The team already knows how to build Korean consumer products. The co-founder's earlier dating app ranked #1 in Korea's App Store social category (etnews, 2025-04). The company raised a seed round from YC and NFX in 2025, totaling ₩6B (platum). Followers won't have that head start.
Where users come from: invite codes are the engine
The founder hands out codes himself. When the Korean closed beta started, the CEO posted on Threads: "Anyone who wants to try it, comment or DM me for an invite code! Beta users get a pile of free tokens!" The post has 564 likes and 998 comments, nearly all of them asking for a code.
Codes can be traded for quota. The Korean account is free, but there's a daily usage cap that resets at 4 a.m. Inviting someone earns a "초기화권" (reset ticket), which lets you refresh your quota after you've used it up. So people who want more use it hand out codes themselves. The AI tool account toris.kr spelled out the tactic in its Instagram Reels caption: "Use two accounts to send invite codes to each other, and you'll get 22 reset tickets in total!"
AI tool accounts use it to grow their followings. The end of toris.kr's Reels says "comment '피클' and I'll DM you the invite link." chunmoostudio runs the same play, with the title "The AI secretary that went viral in the US, now in Korean." Creators get followers, Pickle gets users, and both sides are happy. YouTube also has a batch of reviews titled "the best Korean AI agents" that promise to handle Coupang, KTX, and government 24 for you, and Naver blogs carry tutorials. Herald Business reported that it climbed the App Store social free chart from #24 to #17 (10-18 to 10-22).
Free is the hook itself. One Reels title reads "AI secretary 150k 9 won a month? Free in Korea". The US version's in-app purchase tops out at $200, and that contrast is the creative.
Paid acquisition: none seen. Its ads don't show up in public ad libraries, but coverage is limited, so not finding them doesn't mean they didn't run. The charts rose in waves that followed invite codes and creator posts, not the steady climb you see from paid campaigns (inference).
Its YC page claims next-day retention above 70% and a K-factor above 1.2. Unverified.
Where the money comes from
It's basically not charging anyone right now. Korea is free, and in-app purchases exist only in the US version ($1.99–200). Its #73 spot on the Korean Productivity Top Grossing chart suggests some people are paying, but the amount is unknown. Every phone call and cloud browser that clicks through websites for you costs real money in model and call fees. From the outside, there's no way to tell how long this free quota can last or when Korea will start charging. Right now it's buying users with funding, not making money.
Who it's competing with
| Product | Scale | Compared with Pickle |
|---|---|---|
| Muse from Meta | 9M installs on Google Play, #2 Free on the US App Store | Global and generic. It arrived in Japan in October, with no adaptation for Korean certification, payments, or local apps. Reports say some of the calls are actually made by outsourced human staff (404 Media). |
| Instinct | $250M Series B at a valuation of about $10B | US only, used via SMS and phone calls, no app install needed. Pickle took its invite-only model. |
| Kakao's KakaoTalk agent | Backed by KakaoTalk's user base across all of Korea | Closed beta in December, launch next year. Once it's live, distribution will crush everyone else. |
| SKT 에이닷 | Google Play 7.99M installs | A carrier assistant, mostly Q&A and call recordings, with task-completion features still in development |
No small team is copying it that I can see. What will really come at it is the big players: Kakao, SKT, KT, and Muse, which has already entered Japan.
If it were you
B: Worth a try. The opening is real, but don't build a general-purpose AI agent the way it did. Pickle proves one approach: take an AI category that just took off in the US but gets blocked by local certification, payments, and local services, and rebuild it for a market where the internet is its own system, so you can get ahead of the local giants. But this approach is expensive. A general agent has to connect to a pile of local services, every task burns call and model money, free quota has to be propped up by funding, and the window closes when Kakao launches. A small team can only follow a slice of it.
Good for: teams of 2 to 3 people, with someone who knows a local market's apps, payments and sign-in (places like Taiwan, Thailand, Vietnam, Indonesia or Japan, where US products don't get far), and someone who has built a voice-call API or a subscription or pay-per-use app.
Who it doesn't suit: Anyone who wants to launch in the US or English-speaking markets (Muse and Instinct already have those). Anyone who wants a general agent that "can do anything" without money to subsidize free quota. Anyone who can't live with the risk of "AI speaking for you" going wrong.
How to do it: Pick one high-frequency task that people dread calling about and that has high local barriers, and do it really well. Examples: cancelling subscriptions by phone in Japan (the CEO's Japanese promo video leads with exactly this), phone bookings for restaurants and clinics, or haggling calls for phone and insurance bills. State up front that it's AI, have the user confirm before each call, and don't repeat the Onoda incident. Charge per task, and don't offer unlimited free use.
How to get users: Copy the invite mechanism. Invite-only creates scarcity, codes trade for quota, quota resets daily, and people who want more will bring in others for you. Find local AI tool accounts on Instagram, Threads, and YouTube, and trade with them for followers using "comment a keyword, get an invite link by DM." The core asset is a ten-second screen recording of "AI calls for me."
When to move: Before local super-apps (LINE, Kakao, Grab, Zalo, and the like) or Meta's Muse officially ship similar features in the market you choose. The Korean window started closing around Kakao's closed beta in December 2026; Muse is already in Japan.
Signs you've read it wrong: If Pickle's Korean chart keeps falling after the invite codes stop and it starts charging, that means users only wanted free and nobody will pay for the task-doing. Or if Kakao's agent pushes it out of the top 100 as soon as it launches, that means the local-barrier wall can't stop a big player that controls distribution. If either happens, the approach loses value in other countries too.

A "personal AI agent" app that makes phone calls, books reservations, places orders, and handles paperwork for you. In the US, Meta's Muse and Instinct got there first. Pickle's play is to rebuild that for Korea (and then Japan), free in Korea, with sign-up only by invite code. Before the big players' versions from Kakao and SKT launch, it spread through invite codes on Threads and Instagram and reached #3 on Korea's iOS free overall chart.

- Ranked 35–64 on Japan's iOS Productivity free chart, with 11 ratings. The iOS version 2026-08-10 launched in the US first, but by 11-06 it had only 47 US ratings (iTunes lookup), so it never really took off in the US.
- It's reached #3 on the free overall chart but has only 56 ratings. Two reasons: Korean users rarely leave ratings, and many people install it and then get stuck on the page waiting for an invite code (see below).
2. Competitors
| Product | Where | Launched | Scale | How it differs from Pickle |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Muse from Meta | iOS/Android/web/WhatsApp | Play 2026-08-31, iOS 2026-09-08 (in our database), launched September | Play 9M installs, 7 days +1.61M; US iOS Top Free #2, Japan and Canada #1; US iOS 460K ratings (in our database, 11-06) | Big company, going global fast. Launched in Japan in October (PhocusWire). The phone-call feature is still in testing, and reports say some calls were actually made by outsourced humans (404 Media). No adaptation yet for Korean certification or payment systems. |
| Instinct | Sends texts, makes calls, emails (no app install needed) | 2026, invite-only the whole time. 9-16 launched the Concierge calling feature. | Raised a $250M Series B in August at a valuation of about $10B (Fox News, Business Insider) | US only, no app install. Went viral on mystique and a waitlist. Pickle copied the invite-only model, but built an app with a 3D character. |
| Dots, Grok bots, Claude Duet, etc. | US | 2026 years | Wired 10-27 tested 6 of them side by side | All are general-purpose US products, with no connectors for local Korean services. |
| SKT 에이닷(A.) | Android/iOS | Already around | Play 7.99M installs (in our database) | An assistant built by a telecom carrier, mainly Q&A and call recording. The agent feature that makes calls on your behalf is still being developed under the government's "Everyone's AI" project (ZDNet 10-14). |
| Kakao Kanana (an agent inside KakaoTalk) | KakaoTalk | Closed beta opens in December, full launch next year (Chosun Ilbo, Yonhap 10-13) | – | Strongest distribution, but not live yet, so Pickle has a window to itself. |
| KT and other carriers | – | In development | – | Same as above |
| Open source | – | – | – | There are open-source agent frameworks, but no consumer product for ordinary people that can make local phone calls. |
Bottom line: the US is already crowded (Meta's Instinct, valued at $10B), but Korea has no live consumer agent that actually gets things done. The big companies have only announced theirs, not shipped.
3. Growth tactics (evidence)
- Invite-only closed beta with invite rewards (core, verified). The Korean version launched in mid-October as an "iOS closed beta" and can only be joined via invite link. Inviting others earns "reset tickets" (초기화권), which reset your daily free quota. Creators teach people to "use two accounts to send invite codes to each other, up to 22 reset tickets" (toris.kr Instagram Reels, YouTube Shorts cRjhLLMwOP0, the dcinside post "take the Pickle invite code and use it"). Users who want more quota start sharing invite codes themselves. This matches the K-factor > 1.2 claimed on its YC page (self-reported, unverified).
- The founder personally posts invites on Threads (verified). CEO Daniel Park (@danifestoo) announced the Korean closed beta on Threads: "If you want in, find me in the replies or DMs for an invite code; beta users get lots of free tokens." The post got 564 likes, 998 comments and 236 reposts, and most comments are people asking for codes.
- Korean AI tool accounts and tech creators are piling on (verified). On Instagram, accounts like toris.kr and chunmoostudio use engagement bait ("comment '피클' and I'll DM you the invite link") to grow their followings, which also brings in new Pickle users. On YouTube there's a batch of reviews like "Pickle: the best Korean AI agent" and "handles Coupang, KTX, and government 24 for you." Naver blogs have tutorials. On Threads, someone wrote "요즘 스레드·앱스토어 난리난" (it's blowing up on Threads and the App Store lately). In the press, Herald Economy reported it rose in the App Store social-category free chart from #24 to #17 (10/18→10/22, cited via toris.kr).
- Free in Korea, a sharp contrast to the US pricing (confirmed). A Reels headline reads "AI secretary 150k 9 won a month? Free in Korea." Korean accounts are free with a daily usage cap that resets at 4 a.m. (toris.kr, Naver blog). The US version's in-app purchases top out at $200.
- Japan: a backfire that still brought exposure (verified, but negative). 10-29, travel YouTuber おのだ (onodamasashi) posted that Pickle used his name to call hotels twice without his permission. The X post was seen 7.77M times (Livedoor News, Togetter). The CEO publicly apologized in Japanese on X and promised that calls would always be confirmed first and must state that it's an AI. In the same period, the CEO also posted a Japanese promo video on X ("cancel a contract by phone, book a restaurant, ask 6 shops if they have stock, hand it all to Pickle in one sentence"). Afterward Pickle stayed around #44–64 on the Japan iOS Productivity chart without a big jump, so the incident brought more attention than downloads.
- US launch buzz in the English-speaking world (confirmed, but it did little for Korean volume). 10-01 CEO posted on X: 461K views, 1K bookmarks (doomers.ai). Korean users are sharing "a YC company from the US" and "the AI secretary that blew up in the US" as selling points (chunmoostudio's post reads "The AI secretary that went viral in the US is back, now in Korean").
- Paid ads: none found. Pickle has no advertisers in our Meta Ad Library, but that library only tracks products on our list, so not finding ads doesn't mean there were none. Judging from the rank curve, growth came in waves tied to invite codes and social content, not the steady climb typical of paid acquisition (inference).
4. Why it took off
- Timing: In 2026 9–October, Meta Muse and Instinct made "private AI agents" a hot category in the US. Korean users have heard of it, but there's no local product they can use yet. Kakao's agent only opened closed beta in December, and SKT and KT are still building theirs under a government program. Pickle sits right in the window where the US category has already educated the market and Korea has no supply yet.
- Rebuilt for Korea: the CEO's own words on Threads were: "Korea has security plugins, recognized certificates, and various Pay systems. It's a totally different internet from the US, so we rebuilt it." It connects to Naver, KakaoTalk, the government's 24, and Coupang, can book KTX (Instagram and YouTube reviews), and has Korean local agents and connectors. US products like Muse can't do these, so they can't "handle things for Koreans."
- Phone calls are the easiest demo to understand: it calls customer service to change your plan, books reservations, and checks on orders for you. People who are afraid of phone calls (the phone anxiety common among young Japanese and Koreans) get the point from one screen recording, which makes it great material for short videos and screenshots.
- Free, plus invite-only, plus reset tickets: free gets people to try it, invite-only creates scarcity, and sending invite codes earns reset tickets, so people who want more usage recruit others for it on their own. That's the growth engine.
- The team has built Korean consumer products before: co-founder 유호진 previously built a dating app that reached #1 in the Korean App Store social category (etnews 2025-04 interview). The company raised seed rounds from YC and NFX over 2025 years, totaling ₩6B (platum). The team has built a Zoom AI avatar and open-sourced Glass, and also made Pickle 1 AR glasses (questioned as fake during 2026-01 pre-orders, The Neuron). They kept switching directions looking for a breakout, and this time they found one.
- Self-reported retention: the YC page claims day-one retention of 70%+ and a K-factor > 1.2 (self-reported, unverified).
5. Differentiation, and whether that's why it broke out
- Compared with Muse and Instinct, Pickle's biggest difference is localization: Korean certification and payment systems, plus connectors to local apps. Second, Pickles can talk to each other (friends' Pickles book times and venues directly with each other; the CEO says "right now, only we have this in the world"), along with a 3D character that can be raised over time.
- Localization is the direct reason it took off in Korea: the same product sat in the US for 3 months with only 47 ratings. With the Korean version, it hit #3 on the Korea iOS Top Free overall chart within two weeks. The features are the same ones; what changed is how it's distributed: it connects to local services and is free with invite codes.
- There's no evidence yet of a network effect from agents talking to each other. It reads more like a story for investors. The invite codes and reset tickets are the growth mechanism actually working.
6. Visibility and copycats
- Visibility: buzzing in Korean niche circles, not yet dug into by mainstream tech media. Revenue isn't public and isn't on TrustMRR. In English, only doomers.ai has its US launch post. In Japan, it made Livedoor and Togetter because of the hotel call incident. In Korea it's creator content on Threads, Instagram, and YouTube, plus chart coverage from Herald Economy.
- Copycats: no small teams copying it yet. The real threats are the big players, Kakao (December beta), SKT, KT, and Meta Muse (already in Japan).
7. What others can borrow
- Regional arbitrage: take AI categories already proven in the US but blocked in other markets by local certification, payments, and local services, and rebuild them for markets like Korea and Japan where "the internet runs on a different system," getting there before local giants do.
- Invite-only plus "invites for quota": turn the model usage cost (free quota) directly into a reward for bringing in new users, and reset it daily so users keep coming back.
- Pick a feature with strong visual impact that can be demoed in 10 seconds (AI making a phone call for you) as the lead material.
- Lesson: features that take actions on the user's behalf, like phone calls, get amplified into millions of views when something goes wrong (Japan 7.77M). Always confirm first, and state that it's an AI.
8. Still unclear
- Retention and payments: Korea is free, so are the USD in-app purchases only collected in the US? Ranking #73 on the Korea Productivity grossing chart shows some revenue, but the amount is unknown.
- How long can the cost of free quota (phone calls plus cloud browser) be sustained, and when will Korea start charging?
- Day-one retention of 70% and K-factor > 1.2 are both self-reported.
- Whether it can hold its position after Kakao launches in December, and whether Meta Muse enters Korea.
- Whether it's running paid acquisition: Meta Ad Library shows nothing, but coverage is limited.
