#20 on Japan's Top Grossing chart, 5,300 global installs: PixClip and a chart with only 34 apps

What it is An Android app where you upload a photo, pick a template, and generate short videos of the face dancing, lip-syncing and moving, with one-time in-app purchases.

Why it charted It hasn't really taken off: it gets only two or three hundred installs a day. It just got a standalone Japanese store page and was placed in the Art & Design category, a niche that has only 34 apps on Japan's Top Grossing chart, so a few in-app purchases were enough to rank it #20.

CHow you could follow it Don't copy the product itself. If you already have an AI image or video app, you can learn its playbook: find short-chart niche categories and countries, and localize only for that one country, especially making sure the Japanese prompts actually work.

Grade C: face-dance videos are a red ocean that dozens of apps have fought over for years. It has no proprietary model, no viral spread, no paid acquisition, and someone already used the same move three months earlier and ranked higher. The only thing to learn is the "find short charts" tactic, and the volume it brings is tiny. Hardly anyone knows about it yet

A Hong Kong company, one month old, built an app that turns photos into dancing videos. Five weeks after launch it reached the top 20 Top Grossing spot in one category on Japan's Google Play. It sounds like traction, but it isn't: that chart has only 34 apps in total, and the app has only 5,300 installs worldwide. The product itself isn't worth copying. What's worth noting is the way it got onto that chart, and how cheap that way is.

Nov 1, two things happened on the same day

On Nov 1, 2026, a Japanese user named Koji Machida gave PixClip 1 stars: "It can't even run simple commands. I suspect it doesn't support Japanese at all... an app made by foreigners probably can't handle Japanese. I don't want to use it anymore, uninstalled." Three people marked it as helpful.

The same day, PixClip appeared for the first time on the Japan-store Art & Design Top Grossing chart, at #20, and over the following days stayed between #20 and #21 (Google Play chart, 11-01 to 11-06).

On one side a Japanese user complained it doesn't understand Japanese, on the other it showed up on Japan's Top Grossing chart. Both are true, and understanding how they happened at the same time tells you what this app is.

What it is

The Japanese store title is "PixClip:AI動画・画像作成ツール", and the description has three sentences: upload a photo, pick a template, and a few taps generate videos of the face dancing, lip-syncing and moving; selfies can be made to "talk, sing, dance"; use a photo with good lighting and a clear face.

This kind of feature has been sold on Play for several years. Codeway's Face Dance launched 2021 years ago and has 23.9M installs to date, and PixClip's description is nearly a restatement of it. It is paid per use, priced at $3.99–$89.99 per item, and the store also labels it as containing ads. The version has been 1.0.3 since its Sep 30 listing and hasn't been updated in five weeks.

What "charted #20" actually means

Start with volume. Cumulative installs shown on Google Play: about 20 in Oct 1,000, 28 in Oct 3,286, and 6 in Nov 5,294. Daily new installs have stayed between 200 and 290, and after Nov 4 they dropped to just over two hundred. The last 7 days added 2,008, which works out to +61%, but that's only because the base is small and the curve is flat. No single day spiked.

Now the charts. On Nov 6, the Japan Art & Design Top Grossing chart had only 34 apps in it, and the UK and Germany equivalents had 36 each. A chart that short means few apps on Play actually take money in this category, so cracking the top 20 takes very little. Right next to it, #19 is Runway and #21 is YouCam AI Pro, both with hundreds of times its installs.

It ranks 104 on the US chart, and in 15 storefronts including the UAE, Indonesia, Mexico, Nigeria, the Netherlands, Poland, Saudi Arabia, Thailand, Vietnam and South Africa it ranks between 129 and 132. The rankings are almost identical, which suggests the same aggregated chart projected across storefronts. "Charting in 20 countries" tells you nothing.

No public revenue figures. Judging by the length of this chart and its install count, I'd estimate a few dozen dollars a day (inferred, unverified).

Where the users come from: one deliberate move

PixClip is listed in 20 storefronts. Only Japan has a Japanese title and description. The other 19 use the English original title. On Japan's free chart it has sat between #29 and #21 since Oct 37, and the Japanese reviews read as written by real people. This is the only targeted move visible: localizing the store page for Japan and placing the app in Art & Design, a category with less competition, rather than crowding into the busier Photography and Entertainment categories.

No other channel shows it. Google and TikTok ad libraries show no ads for it (these libraries only cover part of the ads, so a miss doesn't mean it isn't running, but ~200-300 installs a day doesn't look like large-scale paid acquisition). Searching "PixClip" or "PixClip AI" on TikTok returns 0 videos, and X has 0 posts in the past ~60 days. Apart from store mirror sites and chart pages, there is no article about it anywhere online. It also charted once on AppBrain's Poland Art & Design new-releases list, back when it had only 700 installs.

There's something odd about the ratings: of the 44 ratings, 1-star has 10, 5-star has 30, and there are none at 2 or 3 stars. The 5-star reviews are very short, like "とても良い" (very good) and "ありがたい!" (so grateful!). In Nov, 6 gained 6 5-star ratings in a single day, but the written reviews didn't grow. It may be an in-app prompt asking for ratings, or it may be coincidence (unverified).

What users say

Only a handful of reviews include text, but they all point to the same problem: it doesn't do what you ask.

  • "Doesn't follow instructions. It generates whatever it wants." (Michael Clayton, US, 10-23)
  • "The first one or two videos were fine, then they got weirder and weirder. My prompts were solid, but what came out was seriously creepy. I have no idea how it happened, and it really freaked me out." (N M, US, 10-10; developer 10-13 replied, signed "The PixClip Team", asking them to send over the prompt)
  • "You need to remove the restrictions." (Robert Dunham, US, 10-28)
  • Add the Japanese 1-star review at the top.

Three things come through: users don't just use templates, they write their own prompts; output quality is unstable; and Japanese users are very sensitive to whether the app understands Japanese. One more detail: the store's data safety section says "no data collected", yet the app asks users to upload their own face.

Who it's competing with

Photo dancing and lip-sync is a red ocean on Play, and PixClip is the smallest of the bunch (install figures are Google Play's 11-06 numbers):

The most telling is Tyrone Hub. Since 2026 June it has published Pixvi, VidImg and Vidfig: the same com.name.app package naming, all in Art & Design, all riding Japan's Top Grossing chart, with in-app purchases at the same $3.99-$89.99, and VidImg is running Google ads. I can't tell whether it's the same team: the domains and company names differ. What I can say is that the playbook is identical. PixClip didn't invent this; it's following someone else.

If it were you

C: Don't copy the product, but note the playbook. Photo dancing is an old category that dozens of apps have fought over for years. PixClip has no proprietary model, no content distribution, no paid acquisition, hasn't updated in five weeks, and others ran the same play three months earlier and rank higher. It isn't a "breakout app". It's a shell that surfaced on a small, obscure chart.

What's worth learning is the move: find countries and categories on Play where the chart is thin and the Top Grossing list is short, put the app there, and do real localization for that one country alone. The Art & Design Top Grossing charts in Japan, the UK and Germany each have only about thirty-odd spots, so a small amount of paid spend can buy chart visibility. Japanese users also do pay for AI animation and AI video; the same chart includes PixAI, にじジャーニー and AniFlow.

Who it's for: small teams that already have a working AI image or video app and test products on Play, looking to add one country's chart visibility at low cost.

Who it's not for: anyone starting from scratch to build an AI dance-template app. The models are third-party APIs, the features match dozens of competitors, big companies give theirs away free, and this move only brings a few hundred installs a day, which can't sustain a product.

How to do it: if you try, do the part PixClip got wrong. Japanese prompts need to actually be understood (that's the one-star complaint), output needs to be stable and not frightening, and the store page and in-app copy should be written by native speakers, not just translated titles. Pick Art & Design as the category and open only the Japan storefront at first, then see whether you can hold free and grossing ranks.

How to get users: this move is itself the acquisition, relying on store search and chart exposure. For more volume you'd still need paid acquisition or content, and the larger competitors in the category are already buying ads.

Deadline: there's no hard deadline, but the value of this move comes from the chart being short. Right now at least Tyrone Hub and PixClip are using it. It's only a matter of time before more AI video apps fill these small charts, and the later you enter, the less it's worth.

What would prove this read wrong: (1) PixClip's daily installs rising from a few hundred to several thousand over the next month or two, or it starts shipping updates and appearing in TikTok content, which would mean someone is seriously scaling it and it's more than a test shell; (2) the Japan Art & Design Top Grossing chart visibly growing from thirty-odd spots, meaning the category is getting crowded and the move stops working.

Bottom line

It hasn't really taken off yet. This is a "photo → dance / lip-sync / animate" template shell from a Hong Kong company registered only recently. It has about 5,300 lifetime installs globally, with 200–290 new installs a day. The most eye-catching signal in the recall was "#20 on Japan's Art & Design Top Grossing chart," but that chart only had 34 apps that day, so the bar is low: a few in-app purchases can get you into the top 20. Its one smart move was localizing the title and description for the Japan store only, which got it into a small category chart with less competition and higher willingness to pay. Its 15 other countries rank 129–132 on the same aggregated chart. No ad campaigns, creator content, media coverage, or X discussion found.

  • Japan's Art & Design Top Grossing chart had only 34 apps that day, versus 36 each in the UK and Germany (chart_rank count). 2. Competitors: who else is doing the same thing

4. Team and background

  • The company was founded one month before PixClip launched, and a second shell app, ArtDance, followed in late October. This is a typical Chinese team going global: a Hong Kong company plus multiple shell apps, tested in batches.
  • The googleplay library has other developers named "Polaris", including Polaris Team (live-streaming social apps like WeJoy and Mangochat), but domains and package names don't match, so there is no evidence they are the same company.

5. Why it got pulled

  1. The Art & Design sub-category with in-app purchases is very obscure in the Japan store. The Top Grossing chart has only 34 entries, so #20 looks impressive.
  2. The install base is small. 7 day +2,008 becomes +61%.
  3. Charted in 20 countries, but in practice it's "one aggregate chart + Japan + UK/Germany/US."

6. Differentiation

  • No real product differentiation: template-based photo dance / lip-sync, the same thing as Face Dance, Dance AI, and Pixvi.
  • The only distinguishing move is that it localized for Japan and chose the obscure Art & Design category, while most similar apps crowd into Photography or Entertainment in the US or India. That's what got it into the Japan Top Grossing top 20, but the volume it brought is tiny. It didn't "break out" on this alone. It just showed up on a small chart.

7. What others can borrow

  • On Google Play, look for countries where the category is obscure and the chart is short: the Japan, UK, and Germany Art & Design Top Grossing charts each have only 34–36 apps. Put an AI video app in that category and localize it for that country, and you can get Top Grossing exposure cheaply. Tyrone Hub's Pixvi and VidImg are using the same play, which suggests it can be copied.
  • Japanese users are willing to pay for AI animation and AI video (PixAI, Days AI, にじジャーニー, and AniFlow are all on the same chart). But Japanese users are sensitive to how well Japanese prompts are understood, and "doesn't understand Japanese" is a common complaint in bad reviews. If you do this, get Japanese prompt handling right first.

8. Still unclear

  • Actual revenue: we can't convert what #20 on Top Grossing means in dollars. Our estimate is on the order of a few dozen dollars a day (unverified).
  • Whether it's the same team as Tyrone Hub (Fortune Horse): the IAP price range, package name format, category, and chosen countries all match, but the domains and company names differ. It can only be called "the same playbook"; we can't confirm it's the same team.
  • Small-scale paid acquisition: none found in the ad libraries, but coverage is limited.
  • Retention: too few reviews to judge.
