A Dynamic Island app with only 7,600 installs outranks every ten-million-plus rival on the grossing chart
What it is On Android, it puts an expandable capsule around the front camera cutout, showing live status such as music, charging, timers, and rideshare or food delivery, with control buttons when tapped. Free with no ads, and Pro is a one-time purchase.
Why it took off Most rivals earn from ads and never reach the grossing charts. This one looks cleaner and sells a one-time purchase, so a small number of paying users was enough to hit the low bar of a personalized grossing chart. Traffic came from the developer giving away codes on Reddit and from a weekly feature on the Dutch Android Planet.
CHow you could follow it Don't build a Dynamic Island clone, since this category is already crowded. Take its approach to other Android tool categories where ten-million-install apps are all ad-funded reskins: rebuild with better design and privacy, sell a one-time purchase, target broad category keywords in the title, and launch through Reddit code giveaways and local European Android media.

An Indian indie developer rebuilt the oldest iPhone-style Dynamic Island clone on Android: Material You design, no account, no ads, and a one-time Pro purchase. Three weeks after launch it had 7,593 installs, a fraction of the leaders in its class, yet it was the only Dynamic Island app in the top 40 of the US personalized grossing chart. It shows that in an older tool category crowded with ad-funded reskins, a cleaner app can earn money. But the Dynamic Island category itself is already crowded, so copying it leaves little room.
One 516-view video and a comment from a Dutch user
On Oct 17, 2026, Piyush Mamidwar posted a demo video on his YouTube channel titled "Shima : Dynamic Island for Android," and the app went live on Google Play the same day. By Nov 6, the video had 516 views.
Two days later, on Oct 19, Dutch user Jelte van de Kieft left a three-star review opening with "Amazing app", then raised two questions. One was that the Dynamic Island clashed with Android's built-in Live Update, and he couldn't find a place to turn it off. The developer replied the same day with step-by-step instructions for disabling the system Live Update in notification settings.
Piyush is based in Pune and is self-taught. His earlier offline music player, Oto Music, has over 1M downloads on Play, about 75k reviews, and a 4.6-star rating, and it is known for its polished interface. Shima's support email is still the one tied to Oto Music.
What it is
It places a small capsule around the front camera cutout. When music plays, the charger is plugged in, the flashlight is on, a timer is running, or a ride is on its way, the capsule expands to show the relevant content; tapping it opens a card with the controls you need. Rideshare, food delivery, and timer data come from Android 16 Live Updates and live notifications from other apps.
The store page includes some blunt lines:
No account, no ads, no analytics.
SHIMA PRO — One purchase, yours to keep.
Pro unlocks the advanced features: more than 4 reminders at once, more gesture rules, swipe gestures, a second capsule, and backup and restore. There are also a few details rivals rarely do: capsules can align to the punch-hole position and screen orientation, and each panel of a foldable can be tuned on its own. Gestures can trigger different actions based on the phone's current state and can hook into Tasker, and the color scheme can follow the wallpaper via Material You. The in-app prices on Play are $0.99–99.99, and I couldn't find how much Pro actually sells for.
How far it got
| Date | Total installs | Added that day | Score |
|---|---|---|---|
| 10-28 | 1,649 (third-party estimate) | — | — |
| 11-02 | 2,757 | — | 79 |
| 11-03 | 4,099 | +1,342 | 109 |
| 11-04 | 4,497 | +398 | 126 |
| 11-05 | 7,593 | +3,096 | 142 |
| 11-06 | 7,593 | 0 | 162 |
Data comes from public Google Play numbers. The 11-06 store page shows a 4.3 rating from 165 reviews and 5K+ downloads.
The volume is small, but look at which charts it's on:
- Top Grossing: 11-02 just entered the personalized Top Grossing charts in several stores, ranking #133–#142. 11-03 jumped to #16 in India and #44 in the US in one day; 11-06 climbed to #29 in the US. On the same day, in the top 40 of the US personalized Top Grossing chart, it was the only dynamic-island-style app. Dynamic Bar and dynamicSpot, with tens of millions of installs between them, weren't on it.
- Top Free: it ranks best in the Netherlands, where 11-04 hit #16 on the personalized Top Free chart. In the US it only ranked #106–#156.
The reason it ranks this high is simple: rivals mostly earn from ads and don't chart on Top Grossing, and the personalized category charts have a low bar. Next to the #16 spot in India sit widget packs and charging animations. A few thousand installs, plus a small share of people buying the one-time upgrade, is enough to chart. This shows some people are paying, but it can't tell us how much money it makes. At this install count, revenue is most likely still small (inference).
Where users come from
All of these channels are free, and each is small in scale:
- Self-posting on Reddit: it was posted in r/droidappshowcase as "Shima: most beautiful Dynamic Island for Android" with a Promo / Giveaway tag, most likely with Pro redeem codes given away. A post also appeared in r/HowToMen. These posts often sit next to other people's "recommend a dynamic island app" threads.
- Weekly picks from a Dutch outlet: Android Planet, a Dutch Android site, put Shima first in its Nov 1 "new apps this week" roundup, describing it as "een recent gelanceerde app die veel lof krijgt" (a recently launched app getting a lot of praise). Two days later it reached the Dutch personalized Top Free chart, where it ranked #16 on 11-04. That is its best ranking in any store, and the timing lines up.
- Developer page of an older app: on Play, Oto Music and Shima sit under the same developer name and appear in each other's "More by" sections. Oto Music's Instagram (about 1,200 followers) has also posted download links.
- Store search for "dynamic island": rival apps have tens of millions of installs combined, and people keep searching the term. 11-05 added 3,096 installs in a single day with no outside source I could find, so it most likely came from store search or featured placements (inference).
What I didn't find: paid ads, TikTok videos, discussion on X, Product Hunt, or English-language tech media.
Why users are willing to pay
Reviews praise two things: the design looks good, and the animations run smoothly.
"It's literally the BEST DYNAMIC ISLAND I EVER TRIED." —— Gabriel Fernández, 10-18
"this is the best island out there. I love the material ui design… And the animations are so smooth and fluent." —— Hrishi M B, 11-03. The same review also complains that WhatsApp and Instagram messages don't show.
Add to that: no ads and no analytics. Apps like this need two sensitive permissions, accessibility and notification access, so a privacy promise carries real weight. The store page's data safety section says it collects no data and shares nothing with third parties.
It also updates often: five or six versions in three weeks, now at 0.5.1. The notes for 11-04 say it fixed timers not showing on Samsung phones, a code 5 error for some users buying Pro, and the island staying visible on the lock screen.
Who it's competing with
This is a four-year-old category that took off with the iPhone 14 Pro launch in September 2022.
| Product | Scale (Google Play, 11-06) | How Shima differs |
|---|---|---|
| Dynamic Bar | 19.4M installs, +63k in 7 days | Free with ads, high volume |
| dynamicSpot | 14.7M installs | The standard answer most media recommend; looks closely copied from iOS |
| Dynamic View AZ / Dynamic Notch | 12M / 7.34M installs | Tool portfolio built for ads |
| Dynamic Island Pro(Eywin) | 1.45M installs, +103k in 7 days | Fastest growth, driven by climbing Top Free |
| Material Capsule | 1.09M installs | Also Material-style and the closest match in positioning; already over a million |
| Hyper Bridge | 1.13M installs | Bridges notifications into Xiaomi's built-in HyperOS "Super Island" |
| TheNotch | Not verified | Launched almost at the same time, similar features, often recommended alongside Shima |
| Samsung Now Bar / Android 16 Live Updates | Built into the system | The system is building status bar capsules itself |
The trouble is more than competition. Less than two weeks after launch, Shima's Pro was already cracked and posted by several sites including modyolo and Platinmods. On Nov 4, someone also posted a "clean-room rebuild of com.piyush.island" on GitHub with source code and an installable APK (it has only 1 stars). That people crack it shows Pro is wanted, but it also shows a one-time paywall doesn't stop many people.
What to learn from it
What it really proves is a playbook, and it has little to do with dynamic islands:
- Find a tool category with huge installs but where every product is an ad-filled reskin, such as charging animations, edge lighting, gesture navigation, lock screens, or notification history. Tens of millions of installs show the demand, yet users never had a clean, good-looking version.
- Rebuild it around design and privacy, sold as a one-time purchase. Even a small volume can chart in a niche category, and chart rank itself brings exposure.
- Enter through a new system API. Android 16 Live Updates gave third-party islands standard access to ride-hailing, delivery, and timer data. When the system opens a new API, old categories get a reason to be rebuilt.
- Near-zero launch cost: post redeem codes in Reddit communities that allow self-promotion, then pitch "new app of the week" to local Android media across European countries.
The developer is copying this playbook himself: his new app Sensu: One-Hand Controls offers a pie-style one-hand menu, again using an accessibility service and a one-time Pro purchase.
If it were you
Verdict: don't build a dynamic island. Take the approach and apply it to another Android tool category that is crowded with ad-filled reskins.
Good fit for: an indie developer who can build Android accessibility services and overlays, has decent design taste, and can handle the design alone.
Bad fit for: anyone counting on ad revenue from installs. This path only earns money from the small share of users who pay once. It's also a poor fit for anyone who doesn't want to fight phone-by-phone compatibility every day, since Samsung, Xiaomi, and vivo each have their own background restrictions.
How to do it: first find a personalization or tool category on Play with tens of millions of installs, a top rating around 4.0, and reviews complaining about ads. Build a Material You version with no ads and no data collection. Make the free version good enough on its own, sell advanced features in Pro, and price the one-time purchase at $3–6 (estimate). Reply to every review for the first three weeks and ship updates weekly.
How to get users: put the category keyword in the store title, as it does with "Dynamic Island"; post in communities like r/droidappshowcase and give away 50 codes; email local Android media in the Netherlands, Germany, Italy and similar countries, since they run weekly new-app columns.
When to move: there's no hard deadline. But if you're riding a new system capability like Android 16 Live Updates, you need to move before Samsung and Xiaomi build the same feature into the system well enough. I'd estimate within 2027 year.
Signs you've misread it: after two months it can't get into the top 50 of its category charts, or the conversion rate stays under 0.5% (estimate); or the next system update ships the feature built in. Shima is no different: if it's still stuck around ten thousand installs by December and drops out of the US Top Grossing top 50, its chart rank was just a short-lived effect of the low bar, not a business.

One line
There are already a bunch of Android apps that copy the iPhone Dynamic Island. The big ones have tens of millions of installs, but most are ad-laden reskins. Shima is from an indie dev who already has a hit older app with a million installs (Oto Music). They rebuilt this old category with "Material You design + smooth animations + no account, no ads, no analytics + a one-time Pro purchase." Early traffic came from the dev posting on Reddit and YouTube, plus a weekly feature from the Dutch site Android Planet. Its installs are small (7,593), but its Top Grossing rank is the best of any Dynamic Island app. The reason: a one-time purchase model, and a niche category where the Top Grossing bar is low.

- Rating 4.25 (1–5 stars distributed [10, 0, 20, 40, 91]), no ads (ad_supported=False), in-app purchases $0.99–$99.99.
- Charts: 11-02 just entered the personalized Top Grossing charts across stores, ranking #133–#142; 11-03 jumped to #16 in India and #44 in the US in one day; by 11-06 it was #16 in India and #29 in the US, and #36–#37 across a dozen-plus other stores (the category charts in these smaller stores are basically the same aggregate chart, so don't treat them as a dozen separate markets).
- Top Free: its best store for free charts is the Netherlands personalized Top Free chart, where it hit #29,11-04 and #16 on 11-03, clearly better than other stores (in the US it was only #106–#156). The English-speaking stores Canada, Australia, and the UK sat between #58 and #102.
- On the 11-06 personalized US Top Grossing chart, Shima is the only Dynamic Island app in the top 40. dynamicSpot, Dynamic Bar, and other established competitors aren't there.
2. Competitors (doing the same thing)
| Product | Where | Launched | Scale (googleplay library, 11-06) | How Shima differs |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Dynamic Bar(Cards) | Android | 2022-10 | 19.4M installs, 254k ratings, +63k over 7 days | An older player that rose during the iPhone 14 Pro launch wave, on a free + ads mass-production model. Shima differentiates on design and privacy. |
| dynamicSpot(Jawomo) | Android | 2022-09 | 14.7M installs, +37k in 7 days | The media's go-to "standard answer" (AndroidHeadlines 2022, MakeUseOf 2026-01). Feature-complete, but the design leans toward an iOS copy. Shima uses native Material You. |
| Dynamic View AZ(Apps Genz) | Android | 2022-11 | 12M installs | A typical member of an "iOS-ification" toolkit lineup. |
| Dynamic Notch Notification Bar | Android | 2022-09 | 7.34M installs, 238k ratings | Same as above: high volume, monetized through ads. |
| Dynamic Island Pro - Notch Bar(Eywin) | Android | 2025-04 | 1.45M installs, +103k in 7 days | The fastest-growing competitor, but its volume comes from paid acquisition and the free charts. Shima's installs are a fraction of its size, yet its Top Grossing rank is better. |
| Hyper Bridge(d4viddf) | Android / open-source oriented. | 2025-12 | 1.13M installs | Bridges notifications into Xiaomi HyperOS's "Super Island." Shima is a universal overlay that works on all devices. |
| Material Capsule: Island-Style | Android | 2025-07 | 1.09M installs | Also Material-style, and the closest to Shima's positioning. Already at a million scale. |
| TheNotch(Datta Chinmoy) | Android | Around 2026-10 (store page 10-15) | Not in our database, unverified. | A newer competitor that launched almost at the same time, with highly similar feature descriptions. Instagram's "Android Dynamic Island" topic page recommends it alongside Shima. |
| Android 16 Live Updates / Samsung One UI 8 Now Bar / HyperOS Super Island | Big-company features | From ¥2025 | Built into the system | System-level status bar capsules and lock screen live activities. Shima doesn't compete with them. Instead, it reads their data (rides, deliveries, timers) and renders it as an interactive island. |
| The iPhone Dynamic Island | Big-company features | 2022-09 | — | The source of demand: Android users want the same thing. |
Bottom line: this is a four-year-old category with lots of large competitors. Shima isn't the first, and its installs are far below theirs. Its differentiation is "doing it better and cleaner," not "doing what nobody else did."
3. Growth tactics (evidence)
- The dev posted on Reddit themselves (confirmed): an r/droidappshowcase post, "Shima : most beautiful Dynamic Island for Android" (about two weeks ago, tagged Promo / Giveaway, likely with Pro redemption codes), and an r/HowToMen post, "[App][Promo] Shima : most beautiful and most performant Dynamic Island…". Both posts keep showing up linked in the sidebar of other people's "recommend a Dynamic Island app" threads on r/androidapps (per Brave / Jina search results). Reddit blocked scraping of the post bodies, so upvote counts are unknown.
- Self-published YouTube demo (confirmed, but tiny reach): channel Piyush Mamidwar posted "Shima: Dynamic Island for Android" the day it launched, 2026-10-17, and it has 516 views (YouTube Data API, 11-06).
- Dutch press weekly pick (confirmed, matches the data): Android Planet (androidplanet.nl) 2026-11-01 ran Shima at #44 in its "apps week" roundup, headlined "Turn your Android into an iPhone with this app". Afterward, the Dutch personalized free chart 11-03 had it at #29, and 11-04 at #16, far better than in any other store. One of the earliest long reviews also came from a Dutch user, Jelte van de Kieft (10-19).
- Store search for "dynamic island" (inferred): the term has large existing search volume (the category's apps total tens of millions of installs), so a new app with high ratings and good conversion can capture the long tail. 11-05 gained +3,096 in a single day with no external source found. It may have come from store search or a recommendation slot. Unverified.
- Cross-promotion from the older app's developer page / social media (partly confirmed): the same dev's Oto Music (an offline music player with 1M+ downloads, about 75k reviews, 4.6 stars) and Shima link to each other on the Play developer page under "More by." Oto Music's Instagram (@_otomusic, about 1,252 followers) also has a post with a Shima download link. Whether the Oto Music app itself promotes Shima is unverified.
- Not found: paid ads (not on our ad library list), TikTok (TikHub returns no relevant videos), X (x-radar: 0 posts in the last 30 days), Product Hunt, HN. Major English media haven't covered it either.
4. Why it took off
- Demand is established and long-running: Android users have wanted a Dynamic Island for years. The category has tens of millions of cumulative installs over four years, which shows the demand is real. Starting in 2025, Android 16 Live Updates and Samsung's Now Bar made "live activities in the status bar" a system concept. Ride-hailing and food delivery apps began sending standardized live notifications, so third-party islands finally had good data to display (Shima's description says exactly this: "timers, rides, deliveries and other live updates from your apps").
- The quality gap is real, and users are buying it: reviews repeatedly say "BEST DYNAMIC ISLAND I EVER TRIED" (10-18) and "the best island out there… I love the material UI design… animations are so smooth" (11-03). The dev's earlier work, Oto Music, is known for good looks and Material design, so the design skill carries over.
- The payment structure gets it onto the charts: free, no ads, and a one-time Pro purchase (unlocking more than 4 simultaneous reminders, more gesture rules, swipe gestures, a second capsule, backup and restore). Competitors mostly monetize with ads and don't reach the Top Grossing charts. The niche Top Grossing bar is also low. On India's personalized Top Grossing chart, next to #16 are widget packs and charging animations, so a few thousand installs plus a handful of one-time purchases is enough to chart.
- Fast iteration, responds to reviews: listed 10-17, and by 11-05 it had shipped 0.5.1 (five or six versions in three weeks). The dev replies to reviews one by one, for example explaining how to turn off the system's Live Update conflict. The changelog specifically fixes Samsung timer issues, foldable dual-screen alignment, and a Pro purchase error, code 5.
- The Dutch media feature drove a measurable Top Free bump (see above).
5. What's the differentiation, and is it why it broke out?
- Differentiation: (a) native Material You design that pulls colors from the wallpaper, rather than copying iOS directly; (b) "No account, no ads, no analytics," with privacy as a selling point, directly addressing the sensitive combination of accessibility and notification permissions; (c) fine-grained handling of camera cutouts, screen orientation, and per-panel alignment on foldables; (d) a gesture rule engine (triggering different actions based on the phone's current state, with Tasker integration); (e) a one-time purchase, not a subscription.
- Is this the reason?: It explains payment conversion and word of mouth, not traffic. Traffic still comes from the dev's own promotion and a single weekly media feature, and the scale is small (7.6k). The differentiation gets it named in "recommend me an app" threads and gets a small number of users to make a one-time purchase, which is why it ranks ahead of every competitor on the Top Grossing charts. Whether it can scale depends on whether it can rank at the top for the "dynamic island" store search term.
6. Visibility and copycats
- Visibility: few people know about it yet. No public revenue figures. English tech media, X, TikTok, PH, and HN have not covered it. The only coverage is the developer's own Reddit posts, a weekly feature on Netherlands' Android Planet, and automatic listings on download sites like Softonic, CNET Download, and AppBrain.
- Copycats / piracy:
- Cracked versions appeared less than two weeks after launch: modyolo (10-28, v0.3.0 Pro unlocked), Platinmods (0.3.0 / 0.4.0), PaidShitForFree, ApkMagic, and apkmb. This shows people want Pro, but it also shows the paywall can be bypassed.
- A public "clean-room rewrite" already exists: GitHub erasshh99/Hellomenow published "Shima 0.4.0 — Dynamic Island rebuild" on 2026-11-04. It describes itself as a "clean-room rebuild of com.piyush.island in Kotlin" and includes an installable debug APK and full source code. The repo has 1 stars, so the impact is minimal.
- A competitor, TheNotch, has a very similar positioning. It's impossible to tell who launched first or who copied whom.
- Same name, different product: on r/MacOS there's an open-source Mac notch app by a student also called Shima. It is probably not the same person as this app (unverified).
7. What others can learn
- Old category + design rebuild + one-time purchase: in a tool category where volume is high but most offerings are ad-laden reskins, shipping a well-designed, privacy-clean version with a one-time purchase lets an app break into niche Top Grossing charts even with few installs. The developer is reusing this template: Sensu: One-Hand Controls (com.piyush.pie, a pie-style menu for one-handed use) follows the same pattern of accessibility service + one-time Pro purchase + themes sold separately.
- Riding new system capabilities: Android 16 Live Updates gave third-party islands a standardized data source. Whenever the system opens a new API, there's an opportunity to rebuild an old category.
- Cheap launch channels: subreddits like r/droidappshowcase and r/HowToMen allow self-promotion, and pairing them with redemption codes plus a weekly new-app feature from a local European Android outlet (androidplanet.nl) makes the cost close to zero.
8. Uncertain
- Revenue scale: the in-app purchase ceiling is $99.99, which looks like a tip tier. The actual Pro price wasn't found. A Top Grossing ranking only shows that people are paying, not how much.
- The source of 11-05's single-day +3,096 installs (a store recommendation? a video?) was not found.
- Whether the Oto Music app itself promotes Shima.
- The specific engagement numbers on the Reddit posts (scraping was blocked).
- Retention: overlay apps built on accessibility permissions often get killed by the system or conflict with manufacturer ROMs. Reviews already report conflicts with Live Update and failure to show WeChat / WhatsApp messages.
