A Norwegian's habit-tracker app that sells only in Mexico: 10k installs, charted in the top 50 Top Grossing, and the win came from picking the market, not from a new product
What it is A habit and to-do app where you feed logs to a bonfire for each finished task, log in daily to keep the flame lit, and a Viking by the fire grows with you. The free version caps the number of flames, and a subscription removes the cap.
Why it's taking off It picked Mexico, a market with few paid apps. The store pages are fully localized into Spanish, and it most likely runs paid acquisition and raises budgets step by step. Mexico's productivity top grossing chart has a low bar, so 10k installs was enough to reach the top 50.
CHow you could follow it Don't build another gamified-life app. Take a subscription app with decent retention into a country where the top grossing chart is easy to crack, localize it properly, wire up attribution for your ads, start with a small budget, and raise spend step by step toward the category top grossing chart.
- Data (updated daily) · first launch 2026-09-06 · 11-07 installs 10,901
Android · Total installs worldwide Data 2026-10-29 → 2026-11-07 (10 days, 10 observations). Google's detail page only refreshes install counts every other day, so a flat day doesn't mean nobody installed.
Embercraft is a "gamify your life" app from a one-person company in Bergen, Norway. You finish a task and toss a log on the bonfire; you check in each day and light a flame. It launched on Google Play in Sep 6, and by Nov 5 it had about 10.9k installs in total, with daily new installs rising from around eighty in September to six or seven hundred. It only charts in Mexico, where it reached #41 (11-06) in the productivity top grossing chart. Other apps in that same ranking start at several million installs. The product itself has nothing new, but its playbook is worth studying: pick a country with few paid apps and a low top grossing bar, localize into Spanish, and raise spend one step at a time. The playbook is worth learning. Copying the category itself isn't.
A "I want to level up" review
On Oct 14, a Mexican user named Luis Armando wrote on Google Play: "Honestly, this app makes me more motivated to treat life like a game. Lately my days have been pretty boring, and now I really feel that urge to level up."
Two more reviews that same day. One was just "Too expensive for what it does," which got 11 helpful votes, more than the praising one. The other was a joke: "People are going to start cheating at life, 3, 2, 1..."
These three reviews sum up the app: some people are genuinely moved by the bonfire and leveling up, some hit the paywall and find it expensive, and all of them are written in Spanish by Mexican users. On the Play Mexico page it has a 4.7 rating from 385 reviews (11-06).
What it is
- Tasks are fuel logs. You write a task and pick 1 to 5 logs for it. Once done, that bundle goes into the fire. The store page says "the work is the fuel."
- Habits are flames. You relight them each day, and the streak count goes up. Miss a day and the record shows it honestly. The app describes itself as "a check-in tool that only praises you and keeps no record of anything."
- The bonfire burns out on its own. A Viking lives by the fire, and the experience you earn helps him grow. The 11-04 update added "the Viking's companion" and "clearer subscription plans."
- Bundled toolkit: 25 / 50 minute or untimed focus timers, breathing and meditation, a step-by-step morning routine, a shopping list, phone step counting, and offline use. The day rolls over at 4 a.m., so "at 1 a.m., it still counts as the previous evening."
- No re-engagement push. "No ads, no streak anxiety, no 'we miss you'." Notifications are limited to a meditation-end chime and alarms you set yourself.
Pricing: The free tier covers nearly everything, with one limit: the website says you can light 15 flames per week, and the Mexico store page says 3 per day (the two sources disagree). Membership removes the cap. The website says it also unlocks focus timers and calorie logging, with weekly and annual billing. On Play, in-app purchases priced at $7.99–$149.99,11-04 have a top tier raised to $199.99, which looks like price testing.
Who made it
The developer is Poxi AS, based in Bergen, Norway. The founder is Filip Østervold Tangen (born 1998). Norwegian company registry data shows Poxi AS was founded in 2020, has 1–4 people, and reported revenue of NOK 328k in 2025 (about $30k), a small pre-tax loss.
This is his second attempt. The previous app was Lion XP, which launched on iOS in May 2024. It was an RPG with a skill tree and gear, sold as a $50–60 lifetime membership, had 313 ratings on the US App Store at 4.49 stars, and more installs on Android at 5,000. Reviews of that one include "Paid $50 for lifetime, stuck at level 7, can't get a refund" and "Even after unlocking I keep getting subscription pop-ups," alongside "This is a one-person passion project, and the author listens to feedback."
Embercraft looks like a rebuild after those lessons: the RPG stats were cut down to a bonfire metaphor, the lifetime membership became a subscription, and it got a new package name and brand. The package first went by "Ember: Next Level Productivity" (an old record on a third-party app data site) before becoming its current name.
Where the volume comes from
| Date | Cumulative Play global installs | Rough daily adds |
|---|---|---|
| 09-06 | Launched | — |
| 09-19 | 322 | About 80 |
| 10-01 | 1,130 | |
| 10-15 | 2,953 | 200–300 |
| 10-27 | 5,701 | About 340 |
| 10-31 | 7,161 | About 365 |
| 11-03 | 9,726 | About 850 |
| 11-05 | 10,901 | 550–620 |
The data comes from Google Play. Before late October, the history is filled in with third-party estimates, so only the trend is reliable for single-day numbers.
The curve is a staircase of step-ups: around 10-13, around 10-22 (the day iOS shipped a major release), and around 11-01, each a step up. No single day spikes, and there's no viral content behind it. No one on X talks about it, and neither Reddit nor media cover it. Searching TikTok for Embercraft returns only a jewelry webshop with the same name.
The website's App Store and Google Play download buttons both use AppsFlyer attribution links, the standard setup for paid acquisition. Combined with the staircase curve and zero organic buzz, the most likely explanation is paid ads with budgets raised step by step. But I haven't directly seen any ads: the Google Ads Transparency Center shows nothing under Poxi AS, and the founder ran a TikTok ad for his other fitness app in Poland in May 2026, which suggests he runs his own ads. This is inference, not verified.
The iOS side barely moves: 1 ratings in the US and 6 in Mexico (11-06). Almost all the volume is on Android in Mexico.
Why 10k installs can reach the top grossing chart
In Mexico's Google Play productivity top grossing chart, its rank was #10-29 on 50, #11-03 on 35 (its best), and #11-06 on 41. The top free chart only hovered between ranks 91 and 136. In Poland's productivity top free chart, it appeared for just two days, at 10-29 and 10-30.
On 11-06, the top 30 to 50 spots on Mexico's productivity top grossing chart were all apps like Meta AI, Evernote, and iLovePDF, with installs in the millions to hundreds of millions. Embercraft, at 10k installs, was the only one at that level.
That tells us two things. First, few apps in this category charge, so the bar is low and modest revenue can reach the chart. Second, each user brings in a fair amount of money, and the free-tier cap holds people. Exactly how much revenue corresponds to a #41 spot isn't visible, and it's unknown whether that covers acquisition costs.
Who it's competing with
The category is extremely crowded. From 2025 to 2026, a new "Gamify your life" app launched almost every month.
| Product | Scale (Google Play, 11-06) | Compared with Embercraft |
|---|---|---|
| Habitica | 8.41M installs, launched 2015 years ago | Pixel RPG with team boss fights, heavy community, complex UI |
| Finch: Self-Care Pet | 16.6M installs | Pet care plus self-care, a gentle approach |
| Forest | 49.8M installs | Focus only |
| LifeUp | 318k installs | Geek-oriented, everything customizable |
| Skillion: Gamify your life | 80k installs, +9,298 in the last 7 days | Same slogan, acquires users through its own TikTok content account, and grew faster than it did |
| Pixelio - Habit tracker RPG | 66k installs, #15 in France's lifestyle top grossing chart | Launched in 2026-05, also took off through one country's top grossing chart |
| Levla: Habit Tracker RPG | 28k installs, #159 in the US productivity top grossing chart | Launched in 2026-06, targeting the US |
Functionally, Embercraft is almost identical to these. The difference is packaging: a bonfire that burns out on its own, a Viking who grows with you, plus a "doesn't coddle you" attitude and strong copywriting. These explain the 4.7 rating and why users stay, but not where the installs come from. The installs come from picking the right country and pacing the ads. Pixelio picked France and it picked Mexico, which shows that "pick a small country's category top grossing chart" is a path more than one person is taking.
How many people have seen it
Almost nobody knows about it. No media coverage, no discussion on X or Reddit, no disclosed revenue, and no clones seen. But this category already has plenty of indie developers, so "no one has copied it" doesn't mean the space is empty.
If it were you
Verdict: Don't build a bonfire habit app. The category is too crowded, and it's still unclear whether this one pays back its own costs. What's worth learning is the playbook: pick a country with few paid apps, do real localization, launch with attribution in place, and raise spend step by step to reach the category top grossing chart.
Good fit for: Teams of 1–2 people who already have a full-featured subscription app with decent retention (habits, focus, budgeting, or learning all work), have run Google App Campaigns or Meta ads before, and can calculate the acquisition cost per paying user. Ideally you speak a language from a "mid-income country with few paid apps" (Latin American Spanish, Brazilian Portuguese, Polish, Turkish, and similar).
Not for: Anyone starting from scratch who wants to build another "gamified life" app (Habitica and Finch are already there, Skillion, Pixelio, and Levla are alongside, and new ones keep arriving every month). Anyone who can't run ads and is counting on organic store traffic (this app's volume is almost entirely pushed). Anyone who only wants to target the US (Levla only reached #159 on the US productivity top grossing chart).
How to do it:
- Pick the country and category first: check the top 30–50 spots on the target country's Google Play category top grossing chart. If they're all multi-million-install big apps and you can't find any at 1–50k installs, the bar is low and independent developers haven't crowded in yet.
- Redo the store page, in-app copy, and pricing entirely for that country. Don't machine-translate. Its Mexican store page is written in natural Spanish, down to details like "at 1 a.m., it still counts as the previous evening."
- Give the free tier real value and cap only one usage metric (its cap is on flames). Users who build a habit will naturally hit the limit. You can test the top in-app purchase tier upward gradually, as it did.
- Before launch, wire up attribution with AppsFlyer, Adjust, or a similar tool. Start with a small budget, review returns every week or two, and add a tier when the numbers hold.
How to get users: Mainly paid acquisition, and Google App Campaigns is the easiest route on Android. If you want some organic reach, you can follow Skillion and run a local-language TikTok content account.
When to move: This playbook doesn't depend on holidays or platform loopholes, so there's no hard deadline. But once a country's category top grossing chart gets noticed, a second and third app will follow quickly, so the earlier the better.
What would show I got it wrong: ① Over the next month or two, its Mexico Top Grossing rank falls out of the top 100 and daily installs drop back to double digits. That means the budget was cut and paid acquisition isn't paying back. ② It starts expanding to the US, Spain or Brazil and charts Top Grossing there too. That means the playbook works, and it's worth copying seriously. ③ Several small apps at the 10K-install level show up in Mexico's Productivity Top Grossing top 50. That means the gap has already filled up.

Standalone iOS apps like Ascend AI, Level Journey and Habicat iOS 2025–2026 Individual ratings in the dozens to hundreds A homogeneous gamify-life long tail. Embercraft likewise has almost no iOS volume (1 US ratings, 6 in Mexico). - Where users come from
- Inferred Paid acquisition (likely Google App ads or Meta, targeting Mexico): the website's download buttons all go through AppsFlyer OneLink (playember.onelink.me, with pid / af_sub3 parameters), so attribution tracking is set up. Only Mexico charts, and daily installs climb steadily from 80 to 600–850. No organic content source turns up online. Yet Google's Ads Transparency Center shows no ads under Poxi AS (googleads library 2026-11-02), Meta isn't in our tracking list, and the only TikTok ad lead is a Sloth fitness app ad the founder ran in Poland (tiktokads library 2026-05).
- Confirmed Spanish localization + store search optimization (ASO): the Mexico Play page's title, description and release notes are all in Spanish (Embercraft: Gamifica tu vida). "Gamifica tu vida" is itself a common Spanish search term. The app was originally called Ember: Next Level Productivity and was later renamed Embercraft: Gamify your life (old name records on foxdata and APKPure).
- Inferred In-app prompts for ratings: the Mexico store has about 10K installs and roughly 382 ratings at 4.7 stars (rating count is about 3.5% of installs, which is high). The earlier Lion XP drew complaints like "it asked me to rate it right after I downloaded it."
- Inferred TikTok / X / Reddit content and creators: 0 posts in the X corpus; searching Embercraft on TikTok only returns product videos for a jewelry shop with the same name. Nothing found on Reddit.
Embercraft: Gamify your life (com.playembergame.app) research report
Channel: Google Play; developer: Poxi AS (Bergen, Norway); research date: 2026-11-06
Bottom line
Embercraft is the second "gamify your life" app from Filip Østervold Tangen (born 1998), a solo founder behind Norway's Poxi AS. His previous app, Lion XP, was built in 2024. This time he reduced the RPG setup to one metaphor, a "campfire + Vikings," added a Spanish localization, and picked only Mexico. Installs went from about 80 per day in September to 600–850 per day in early November, 10.9K in total. Mexico's Productivity category has a low bar for charting, so this volume was enough to reach #41. The source of the volume: most likely paid acquisition, but there's no direct evidence yet.
What it is
- Write down the things you want to do. Each one is worth 1–5 logs, and once you finish, you throw the log into the fire. The habit is called a "spark" and is relit every day. Streaks build up, and missing a day shows up honestly in your record.
- The fire burns down on its own over time. A Viking character lives by the campfire and grows with the XP you earn (the 11-04 update added "Viking companions").
- Extra features: Deep Focus timer (25 / 50 minutes or unlimited), breathing and meditation, guided morning routines, shopping lists, phone step counting, offline use. The day resets at 4 a.m., notifications are chime-only with no "we miss you" re-engagement pushes (playembergame.com/landing).
- Pricing: the free plan gives 15 sparks per week (per the website; the Spanish store page says 3 per day). Membership removes the cap and unlocks Deep Focus and calorie logging, with weekly and annual billing. The Play in-app purchase of $7.99–$149.99,11-04 became $7.99–$199.99 in the 1.18 version (googleplay library app_snap).
- Renamed: the original name was "Ember: Next Level Productivity" (old records on foxdata and APKPure). It's now "Embercraft: Gamify your life," and in the Mexico store it's "Embercraft: Gamifica tu vida."

Charts (googleplay library chart_rank):
- Mexico Productivity Top Grossing: 10-29 #50 → 11-02 #39 → 11-03 #35 (best) → 11-06 #41.
- Mexico Productivity Top Free chart: ranks 91–136. Poland Productivity Top Free chart: 10-29 and 10-30 each appeared on two days (178 / 194).
- 11-06 In Mexico's Productivity Top Grossing top 30–50, everything else is Meta AI, Evernote, iLovePDF and similar apps with millions to hundreds of millions of installs. Embercraft is the only one at the 10K-install level. This shows the bar there is low, and that each user's revenue is decent.
Ratings: our library pulls details from the US store, so the rating field is empty. The Mexico Play page shows 4.7 stars from about 382 ratings (read via Jina, 2026-11-06). Recent reviews are all from Mexican users. Among them, 10-14 says "it makes me want to play my life like a game," and others say "too expensive for what it does" (11 people found that one helpful). iOS: 1 US ratings and 6 in Mexico at 4.33 stars (iTunes lookup), so iOS has almost no volume.
Why it took off
- Picked a cheap, low-barrier market. It charts only in Mexico, with the store page fully in Spanish. Paid productivity apps are scarce there, and 10K installs is enough to reach the top 50 of Top Grossing. Why users are coming now: no platform event or content spike. The curve climbs steadily, one step at a time.
- Most likely paid acquisition, with budget steadily increasing.
- The website's App Store and Play buttons both go through AppsFlyer OneLink (
playember.onelink.me/gFo0?pid=ember_landing…), the standard setup for attribution tracking. - Daily installs step up at intervals: around 10-13, around 10-22 (the day of a major iOS release), and around 11-01. This shape looks more like budget being added gradually than like content driving a spike.
- Every organic channel was checked and came up empty: 0 posts in the X corpus; searching Embercraft on TikTok only returns the same-named TikTok Shop jewelry brand; nothing on Reddit or in the press.
- There is counter-evidence too: Google's Ads Transparency Center shows no ads under Poxi AS (checked against the googleads library 2026-11-02), and Meta's ad library isn't in our tracking list. The only TikTok hit is a lead ad the founder ran in Warsaw, Poland, for a different Sloth fitness app (tiktokads library 2026-05), showing he has run ads himself. So on paid acquisition, the verdict is "inferred, not verified."
- The website's App Store and Play buttons both go through AppsFlyer OneLink (
- Why people stay and pay: generous free tier, with a single usage cap. All pages, the whole world and cloud sync are free. Only the number of sparks you can light each week is capped. Once users build the habit, they naturally hit the cap. The top in-app price was raised from $149.99 to $199.99, which suggests he's testing price.
- This is the second attempt. Lion XP (launched on iOS 2024-05, 313 US ratings at 4.49 stars; 5,000+ Android installs) used a skill-tree and gear RPG setup and sold a $50–60 lifetime membership. iOS reviews include complaints like "paid $50 for lifetime, stuck at level 7, can't get a refund" and "kept showing subscription prompts even after unlocking skills." There were also comments like "this is one person's passion project, and the author listens to the community." Embercraft rebuilds on those lessons: simpler setup, subscription pricing, and fast version iteration.
Differentiation
- The features are nearly identical to Habitica, LifeUp and Finch. The difference is in the packaging: a "the fire burns out on its own, Vikings grow through you" metaphor replaces complex RPG stats. The product stance is to not coddle users, to honestly record broken streaks, to reset the day at 4 a.m., and to use chime-only notifications. The copy is highly distinctive ("the work is the fuel").
- This differentiation explains retention and the 4.7 rating, but it doesn't explain the initial traction. Traction came from market selection and the paid acquisition pacing.

Data from the googleplay / appstore libraries, 2026-11-06. This category is very crowded, with new "Gamify your life" apps launching every month for 2025–2026 years.
How many people have seen it
- Almost no one knows about it yet: no press coverage, no discussion on X or Reddit, and TikTok search results are taken over by a jewelry brand with the same name.
- Revenue isn't public. Norwegian company registry (proff.no) shows Poxi AS was founded in 2020, with 1–4 employees; in 2025 it had revenue of NOK 328k (about $30k) and a pre-tax loss of NOK 21k. These numbers are from the Lion XP era; there's no data on Embercraft's current revenue.
- Copycats: none spotted.
What others can borrow
- Pick one cheap market with a low bar to reach the category Top Grossing chart, get "paid acquisition → subscription" working there, then expand to more stores.
- Give generous free access, gate only one core usage, so the paywall doesn't turn users off.
- Hook up attribution for paid campaigns (like OneLink) before launch.
- Instead of patching the old product, they swapped in a clearer metaphor and rebuilt it as a new package and brand.
- In a category where features are interchangeable, build recognition through copy and product attitude.
Still unclear
- Which platforms the ads ran on and how much was spent: unverified.
- How much revenue the #41 spot on the Mexico Top Grossing chart corresponds to, and whether it covers costs: unverified.
- Whether the listing history from before the rename, "Ember", was reset; and whether the free allowance is 15 per week or 3 per day (the two sources phrase it differently).
- Whether the Mexico-only focus is a market test or a long-term bet.
