₹1,150 "trial": How Playo Browser squeezed into India's Top Grossing chart with an empty-shell browser
What it is An empty-shell browser on Android with only an address bar, multiple tabs, and history, mainly installed on phones of users in India.
Why it took off Someone funneled traffic in from off-site in bulk; users came for adult content and "free redeem codes". After entering, they first watched a minute of unskippable ads, then were charged ₹1,150 when the trial converted to a subscription, which pushed it onto India's Top Grossing chart.
DHow you could follow it Don't copy it outright; if you want to learn from it, take only the clean part: find a small utility Indian users genuinely need, offer a clearly priced trial subscription plus in-app ads, and test payback with a small Google App Campaigns budget.
- Data (updated daily) · first launch 2026-09-07 · 11-07 installs 889,223
Android · Total installs worldwide Data 2026-10-29 → 2026-11-07 (10 days, 10 observations). Google's detail page only refreshes install counts every other day, so a flat day doesn't mean nobody installed.
Playo Browser is an Android browser with just an address bar, tabs, and history. It went live on 7 Sep, hit 889k installs in two months, and ranked #21 on the India Google Play Productivity Top Grossing chart in 6 Nov, right between Dropbox and PowerPoint. It has no feature worth noting. Its users are mostly pulled in from off-platform, drawn by adult content and "free redeem codes." The money comes from two places: long ads at launch that can't be skipped, and a subscription that auto-charges ₹1,150 when the trial ends. It's also not a one-off. The same template has shipped four apps in four months. This piece explains how it gained traction and why serious teams should stay away.
A refund request left in the review section
On 1 Oct, an Indian user left a one-star review on Playo Browser's store page, written like a formal letter:
Dear Support Team, I am writing to request a refund of ₹1,150 that was deducted from my account for a trial subscription……
The gist: "I only wanted to try it, I never meant to renew, and ₹1,150 was charged anyway. Cancel the subscription immediately, refund me to the original payment method, and reply when it's done." By 6 Nov, the review had 154 "helpful" votes and sat at the top of the page. Second was "toooo many ads" (87 likes), and third was a five-star "wow nice nice" (131 likes).
₹1,150 is about $13. Why would a browser charge that? Because it never made its money from browsing in the first place.
What it actually is
The store description is three short paragraphs: type a URL or search term in the address bar, open multiple tabs, view browsing history. The home screen has a few "shortcuts." The listing is tagged "Contains ads," in-app purchase reads "₹1,150.00 per item" (shown as $9.99 in the US store), content rating 3+. Version 1.5.1.0, with no updates since 12 Sep.
Its numbers:
| Total installs | 889k (Google Play, 11-06), +7k over the last 187 days |
| Initial ramp | 9-20 had only a few installs → 9-24 about 36k → 10-04 +102k in one day → 10-27 about 700k (third-party daily estimates) |
| Charted | India only: Productivity Top Grossing sat at #20–31 each day from 10-29 to 11-06, Top Free at #27–45 |
| Rating | 3.76 stars from 1,243 ratings, but only about sixty written reviews |
| Bundle ID | com.playobro.browser. "Playo" is also the name of an Indian sports-meetup app. |
Over 800,000 installs produced only 1,200 ratings, roughly one rating per 700 installs. Normal utility apps get far more (inference). Several five-star reviews are single words like "Suresh," "co," or "rathod nagesh," and one is a string that looks like a password, as if people were typing into the review box by mistake.
What users came for
The reviews say why plainly:
- "very bad 18+" (25 likes), "सेक्सी पिक्चर", "सेक्स", "worst unwanted content", "irrevelant websites";
- "sexual content… browser open automatically betting and sexual content": the browser opens gambling and porn pages on its own;
- "i want redeem code" (16 likes), "can you please send", "no video", "i bowuld to play gta 5": people seem to have been pointed here by posts saying "install this to claim codes / watch videos / play GTA 5."
The previous app on the same template, Flint Browser, has even more explicit reviews: "the link I got from a friend… looks like a normal VPN, but it's an app that sends you straight to porn"; "my friend told me to install it, disgusting"; "it's just a browser, but the moment you open it you get the strangest websites" (61 likes); "you have to link a card before you start."
Putting it together (inference, I didn't install the APK): the start page or default homepage points straight to adult and gambling sites. Traffic comes from off-platform landing pages (adult sites, download sites, "free redeem code" pages) and links passed between users. To Google Play's review, it's just a browser rated 3+, filed under Productivity.
The traffic is bought, and in bulk
No ads for it show up in Google's Ads Transparency Center, the Meta Ad Library, or TikTok. Nobody on X, Reddit, or in the press has mentioned it. The only hits are APK download sites and ranking sites. Yet in October it averaged +20,000 installs a day, and on 4 Oct it jumped +102k in one day.
The same day, Flint Browser also gained 101k. Two apps each adding 100,000 on the same day looks like one traffic source and one budget running on both (inference). It doesn't show up in public ad libraries, which suggests off-platform channels: ad networks paid per install, placements on adult or download sites, and private forwarding.
Where the money comes from: three layers
- Long launch ad: "A full minute of ads the moment you open it, and you can't skip them… this app isn't for users, it's just for the developer to make ad money" (10-24).
- Interstitial ads between pages: the privacy policy names Google AdMob.
- Trial converts to subscription: the terms say a subscription wall is built with Adapty. The launch screen offers a "free trial," and when it ends, ₹1,150 is charged automatically. "not free" and "don't purchase" (68 likes), and the refund letter above, are all about this.
The billing period, trial length, and how many people were charged aren't visible from outside. But ₹1,150 is the only tier, and the app stayed in India's Productivity Top Grossing top 31 for nine straight days, which means a lot of people were being charged every day (inference). At the same time, a batch of wrapper browsers (Ge, Astro, Xelon, Vero) mostly relied on ads with no subscription wall, and none reached the Top Grossing chart. Adding a subscription layer raises revenue per user, which is what lets it afford off-platform traffic.
It's the second app, and more are coming
| Package | Developer account name | Launched | Installs (11-06) | Website |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Flint Browser | COGNERA LLP | 2026-07-24 | 1.09M | bestdroidbrowse.online |
| Playo Browser | Start-tar | 2026-09-07 | 889k | playobr.online |
| Flick Browser | ABSOLUTELY AMAZINGLY AWESOME GAMING HARDCOREHEROES | 2026-10-01 | 160k | flickbro.online |
| Video Downloader | Omvora | 2026-10-14 | 101k | videodonloader.online |
Four packages, four developer accounts, four newly registered .online domains. All are in Productivity, all have a single $9.99 in-app purchase, all use the same "address bar / tabs / history / home shortcuts" description, and all list Gmail contact addresses, two of them under Slavic-sounding names. The version numbers also track the sequence: Flint went 1.5.1.0 and then 1.6.1.0, and Playo launched at 1.5.1.0.
The accounts clearly aren't the developers' own. The Playo website and terms are signed "THE TILL GUY LIMITED." UK Companies House lists it as a small company in Lincolnshire, incorporated in 2021, that refurbishes cash registers, with one director, and sells used Sharp and Casio registers on eBay. It has nothing to do with app development. Another app under the same developer account, Spider Web Crawl, uses the package name net.TangledSilkStudios, which is yet another identity. playobr.online was registered in 27 Aug, and ScamAdviser gives it a trust score of 29. Buying or renting an existing developer account to publish under, and moving to a new account and package whenever one gets banned, is an old Play grey-market playbook (inference, and fairly confident; I didn't verify whether the cash-register company's identity was stolen or its account rented).
Who it's competing with
Nobody is fighting Playo for "browsing." Chrome comes preinstalled and has 23.2B installs; Opera Mini, Firefox, and Brave each have hundreds of millions; Transsion phones preinstall Hola Browser, 890M; India has its own JioSphere. All of these products are better than Playo. But Playo was never going after people looking for a browser.
The real peers are the wrapper browsers from 2026 years of this pattern: Ge Browser, Go Browser, Astro, Xelon, Vero, and so on. Each has 300,000 to 1.3 million installs, and most also rely on swapping identities and buying traffic. Ge Browser also gained about 4k in a single day on 90 Oct, likely from the same kind of traffic. Playo's only distinguishing feature in this group is the ₹1,150 subscription wall.
If it were you
Verdict: don't follow it. It earns from three things: using adult and gambling content to pull traffic, publishing under other companies' identities, and charging ₹1,150 under the name of a "trial." All three directly violate Google Play policy. Remove them and what's left is a browser nobody needs.
Who might learn something: if anyone can learn from it, it's teams already working the Indian market with a real utility product. They could look at how far "trial-to-subscription + ads" can go in a low-price market: a single ₹1,150 tier was enough to land in the top 30 of India's Productivity Top Grossing chart, and that chart's bar is lower than you'd think.
Who should skip it: indie developers who want to build a browser (there's no product here to build); anyone counting on organic installs (its installs all came from outside the store); anyone unwilling to touch borderline content or charge-after-trial traps. If you copy it, the best case is that you cycle through accounts the way it does, and the worst case is that your developer account and every linked account gets banned.
How to do it: if you want to learn from it, take only the clean layer. Pick a small tool Indian users really need (passport photos, PDFs, bookkeeping, exam question banks). For free trials, state the charge amount and date clearly, set a local price tier, and show in-app ads. First check how many paid conversions per day the top 30 in Productivity or Education Top Grossing need, then work backward to the installs you'd need.
How to acquire users: the legitimate route is Google App Campaigns (UAC) targeting India, where cost per install is low. Run a small budget for a week first and check whether the 7-day paid conversion rate plus ad revenue covers your acquisition cost. The off-platform channels this app uses aren't available to you, so don't go looking for them.
How much time is left: for the clean approach there's no deadline. For this app, the window depends on when Google spots a 3+ rated browser sending people to gambling pages, or when a wave of refunds sinks the account. Flint has been live three and a half months, so Playo will likely be next within half a year (inference).
Signs this read is wrong: (1) Playo and Flint are still listed and still on the charts next year, meaning these accounts get banned more slowly than expected and the playbook keeps paying off. (2) The store page changes its home screen, reviews stop mentioning 18+ content and charge complaints, and the app still stays on the charts, meaning an empty shell of "trial subscription + ads" can still pay, so this conclusion needs revisiting. (3) A genuinely differentiated Indian local browser breaks into the charts on subscriptions, meaning Indian users really will pay for a browser, and the opportunity is there, not in Playo.

Why Playo Browser (com.playobro.browser) managed to chart
Channel: Google Play. Research date 2026-11-06. Data from our googleplay library (app_profile / app_day / app_day_extAppstoreSpy estimates / chart_rank), the googleads / metaads libraries, live store-page scrapes (google-play-scraper, gl=in), and the web pages listed below.
Bottom line
It didn't "work" as a browser product. It's one account in a templated wrapper-browser matrix: the same template (only an address bar, tabs and history; AdMob interstitials + an Adapty subscription paywall; ₹1,150 / $9.99 single-tier in-app purchase; a one-off .online domain; Slavic-named Gmail addresses; developer accounts registered to unrelated small UK companies) has now shipped four packages in a row: Flint → Playo → Flick → Video Downloader. Most users (mainly in India) aren't looking to "switch browsers." Reviews suggest they came for adult/betting content, "redeem codes", "GTA 5"-type promises, pushed in through links shared by others or external traffic. The "browser" shell lets the app sit on Play at a 3+ rating. Money comes in two ways: unskippable interstitials between screens and launch-screen trials that auto-convert to a ₹1,150 subscription (ranked #21 on India's Productivity Top Grossing chart).
1. The numbers: volume, speed, money
| Metric | Value | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Cumulative global installs | 889,223(2026-11-06) | googleplay.app_snap |
| 7 new in the last day | 187,113 | googleplay.app_profile |

| Charted | India only: Productivity Top Grossing #20–31, Top Free #27–45 (10-29 to 11-06 every day) | chart_rank |
| In-app purchases | "₹1,150.00 per item" (the US store shows $9.99 per item), listed as including ads | Store page scraped live with gl=in |
| Rating | 3.78,1,243 ratings (5 stars 719 / 1 stars 248), only 61 written reviews | Store page scraped live |
| Content rating | 3+ | Store page |
| Version | 1.5.1.0, store shows "Updated on 2026-09-12", no updates since launch | Store page, APKPure version page |
The install-to-rating ratio is about 715:1, far below a normal utility app, which suggests most installs are low-intent traffic. Many of the 5-star reviews are meaningless fragments like "Suresh", "co", "rathod nagesh", "ನಾನು ಒಪ್ಪಿಕೊಳ್ಳುತ್ತೇನೆ". Whether ratings were incentivized is unverified.
Evidence it's making money: ranked #21 on India's Productivity Top Grossing chart, with Microsoft PowerPoint (18), Dropbox (19) and Wispr Flow (22) right around it (chart_rank 2026-11-06). Most-liked negative review (154 likes, 10-02): "I am writing to request a refund of ₹1,150 that was deducted from my account for a trial subscription". Others: "not free", "don't purchase" (68 likes), "i want redeem code".
2. Where users come from and why they show up
Store-page reviews (gl=in, 60 each sorted by helpfulness and by newest) show what people thought they were getting:
- Came for adult content: "very bad 18+" (25 likes), "सेक्सी पिक्चर", "सेक्स", "sexual content… browser open automatically betting and sexual content", "worst unwanted content", "irrevelant websites".
- Pulled in for something else: "i want redeem code" (16 likes), "can you please send", "i bowuld to play gta 5", "no video".
- Heavy ads: "toooo many ads" (87 likes), "as soon I opened the application there was Ad of 1 min that too no skip option… only for the developer earning through ad revenue".
Reviews for sibling app Flint Browser are blunter: "I got this link from one of my friends… it seems like a normal vpn but it is a porn app that sends you straight into the porn", "MY FRIEND MADE ME INSTALL THIS IS GROSS", "it's just a browser but it starts with the weirdest website ever" (61 likes), "you have to add a card to start", "BF movie HD", "im trying to watch these videos".
Inference (not fully verified): a shortcut or default homepage opens adult/betting sites straight away (review: "browser open automatically betting and sexual content"), and the traffic comes from outside the app: install prompts on adult sites, download sites and "free redeem code" landing pages, plus users forwarding the link to each other. The plain-browser wrapper and the 3+ rating get it past Play review.
Ad-spend check:
- The googleads library was searched 2026-11-02 times for the company name, product name and domain, with
no_adsfound; no creatives point to com.playobro.browser or com.flint.browser either. - The metaads library has no ads pointing to this package name or playobr.online.
- TikTok search for "Playo Browser" returned 0 results; X (x-radar, last 60 days) returned 0 results.
- Conclusion: it hasn't shown up in any publicly searchable Google, Meta or TikTok ad library or content platform. The traffic looks more like it comes from non-public grey channels (adult and download-site redirects, CPI ad networks, private forwarding). On 10-04, Playo and Flint each gained +100k in one day (102,275 vs 100,940), jumping together on the same day, which suggests the two packages likely share a traffic source bought in bulk.
3. It's a matrix: four packages on one template
| Package | Developer account name | Launched | Installs (11-06) | 7 new in the last day | In-app purchases | Website / email | Charted |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| com.flint.browser Flint Browser | COGNERA LLP (UK LLP OC457887) | 2026-07-24 | 1,085,994 | 114,825 | ₹1,150 / $9.99 | bestdroidbrowse.online / [email protected] | Saudi Productivity Top Free 13, Top Grossing 28; India Top Grossing 37; Saudi overall Top Free 92 |

(Sources: googleplay.app / app_profile / app_day_ext, 2026-11-06; the ₹1,150 figures for the first two were confirmed by live gl=in scrapes.)
Evidence these packages belong to the same operator:
- Version numbers run on from one another: Flint went 1.5.1.0 then 1.6.1.0, and Playo launched at 1.5.1.0 (the version field in the store reviews).
- All four are in the PRODUCTIVITY category, all use a single $9.99 in-app purchase, a new
.onlinedomain and a Gmail contact address (two of them Slavic names: dmitrij, denissavchuk), and all descriptions use the same "address bar / tabs / history / launch-screen shortcut" set. - Privacy policies all name AdMob; Playo's terms say the subscription paywall runs on Adapty. Playo's search engine options include Yandex.
- Playo and Flint each gained +100k on 10-04, the same day.
The developer accounts are borrowed or bought (inference, high confidence):
- Playo's website and terms name THE TILL GUY LIMITED, a small Lincolnshire, UK company that refurbishes cash registers (incorporated 13317526,2021 per Companies House, sole director Simon James Willicott, SIC 46180; it sells Sharp and Casio registers on eBay) and has nothing to do with app development.
- Another app under the same developer account is Spider Web Crawl, package net.TangledSilkStudios.*, a third identity. The account blurb "Less noise, more goals. bold Android apps that respect your time" is generic template copy.
- The domain playobr.online was registered at Namecheap by 2026-08-27, with a ScamAdviser trust score of 29.
- This is a common grey-market Play tactic: buy an established, already-verified developer account (organization or individual), and when one package gets banned, move to the next account and the next package.
4. Competitors
| Competitors | Platform | Launched | Scale | How it differs from Playo |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Google Chrome | Android preinstalled | 2012 | 23.3B installs | Preinstalled, free, no ads; Playo doesn't compete for the "browsing" need |
| Samsung Internet / Opera Mini / Firefox / Edge / Brave | Android | Years | 920M (Opera Mini), 520M (Firefox), 290M (Brave), etc. | Legitimate browsers that win on features, privacy or data savings; Playo has no feature edge at all |
| Hola Browser (Transsion Talpa) | Android (preinstalled on Transsion phones) | 2021 | 888M | Relies on preinstalls and ads; Playo relies on off-store traffic plus a subscription paywall |
| JioSphere | Android India | — | 40.2M | Homegrown legitimate browsers in India |
| Flint / Flick / Video Downloader | Android | 2026-07 to 10 | 1.09M / 160K / 100K | Sibling accounts in the same template, not outside competitors |
| A batch of new wrapper browsers in 2026 (Ge Browser, Astro Browser, Xelon, Vero, Go Browser, etc.) | Android | 2026-05 to 10 | Each 300K–1.3M | Mostly ad-only, no subscriptions; Ge Browser also gained +90k in one day on 10-04, the same kind of traffic |
(Install counts: googleplay.app_profile, 2026-11-06.)
5. Differentiation
The product itself has no differentiation: three features, no updates since launch. What actually sets it apart, and why it made the chart, is the monetization and distribution combo:
- The browser wrapper can open any web page, so it works as a gateway to adult and betting content, while the 3+ rating and PRODUCTIVITY category get it through review.
- A long opening ad that can't be skipped + interstitials between pages (AdMob) + an auto-renewing ₹1,150 subscription after a splash-screen trial (Adapty). Triple monetization means each user is worth more than a pure-ad wrapper browser, so it can afford outside traffic. Against contemporaries like Ge / Astro / Xelon, which run ads only, the "subscription wall" is why it hit the India Top Grossing chart.
- The package and account are one-off; swap in the next one anytime: template reuse, four apps in four months.
6. How many people have seen it
- No discussion in media, on X, Reddit or TikTok: Jina search only turned up APK mirror sites, AppBrain and applyra chart pages; x-radar 0 posts; TikTok 0 posts.
- Revenue isn't public (and nobody will make it public).
- Copycats: the same crowd is building more (Flick, Video Downloader); a batch of wrapper browsers from the same period exists too, but most skipped the subscription wall.
- Verdict: few people know about it yet, but the playbook isn't new in gray-market circles, and it's fragile: it relies on policy-violating content for traffic and on "trial traps", with real risk of Play delisting and mass refunds.
7. Worth borrowing from / not recommended to copy
- The "legitimate" part worth borrowing: in low-price markets like India, a splash-screen trial converting to subscription plus ad dual monetization, with a single tier at ₹1,150, can push you into the top 30 of the Productivity Top Grossing chart with a low bar to entry; spread risk by shipping multiple apps from the same template.
- Parts not to copy: adult/gambling traffic, borrowing the identity of an unrelated company, and hiding 3+ ratings and 18+ content all directly violate Play policy and our own bottom line.
8. Still uncertain
- I found no direct evidence of the specific traffic sources (which kinds of sites, which ad networks); there are only comments and two apps jumping on the same day.
- Where the home-screen shortcut actually points: not verified, since I didn't install the APK to test it.
- The billing period (weekly / monthly), trial length and conversion rate are all unknown.
- Whether THE TILL GUY LIMITED is an impersonated name, a rented account, or a real affiliation: unverified.
