A fan platform split AI character chat into a standalone app: CharacterTalk's launch growth came from its parent platform
What it is A Korean AI character chat app where users play the protagonist of a web novel, chatting with characters made by Postype creators or with multi-character stories. Paid per message with points.
Why it took off It didn't take off on its own: the parent platform's 8.5M registered users funneled traffic and leftover points, 10 months of creator characters carried over, X/TikTok paid ads added on top, and a launch check-in coupon that doubled rewards concentrated installs from late October to early November.
DHow you could follow it Most teams shouldn't. If you run a content community, follow this order: first build character chat inside the site, let creators generate characters from their works in one click and share revenue by usage, give new users a coupon on their first message, and only after paid conversion is proven, split it into a standalone app and start paid acquisition.
- Data (updated daily) · first launch 2026-10-08 · 11-07 installs 8,508
Android · Total installs worldwide Data 2026-10-29 → 2026-11-07 (10 days, 10 observations). Google's detail page only refreshes install counts every other day, so a flat day doesn't mean nobody installed.
Korean fan-fiction and web-novel platform Postype launched a standalone Android app, "CharacterTalk - Story AI Chat," in Oct 8. Four weeks later it hit 8,500 installs and charted in the Korea entertainment top grossing list. It looks like a new app taking off, but it's really a business that has been running inside the parent platform for 10 months, now with its own front door. Users, points and characters all come from the parent platform, and new users come from paid acquisition on X and TikTok. Below: what it is, where the traffic comes from, why most teams can't copy it, and the few moves you can take from it.
A 1-star review
On Nov 6 at 2 pm 43, on 챗티어, a Korean AI chat review site, a user called "수줍은고래87" gave it 1 stars. Two points: "I happened to like an author who made a character only on Postype, so I signed up to play," and "it keeps repeating the same lines, is this even conversation? Now I just check in daily to collect points and leave it alone." She was on the free tier, with the "알파톡 2.0" model selected.
This review captures the app: people came for the authors they follow, not for the app itself; once there, whether they stay depends on the chat, and the chat's reputation is poor. On 챗티어, through 11-06 there are only 2 reviews total, both 1 stars.
What it is
A Korean AI character chat app. The first line of the store page is "Wait, did you just confess to me?" followed by "Step into a web novel as the protagonist and write your own story. The closer you get, the more the story changes; the ending is in your hands." You can chat with a single character, or enter Story Mode: a story holds up to 10 characters, with affection-style values, unlocking hidden plotlines and endings as you progress.
The characters aren't made by the platform itself but by Postype creators. Creators can generate AI characters from the novels or persona posts they've published on Postype with one click, and the platform promises not to use their works to train AI.
Payment runs on Postype points, charged per message, with models tiered: the priciest "프라임톡" uses Claude Opus at 150 points per message; the middle tiers use Gemini Pro and Claude Sonnet at 60 to 70 points; the cheapest "라이트톡" is free with ads. Long replies and long memory cost extra (these prices were compiled by 챗티어 from the official help page and not checked line by line). The in-app purchases listed on Play are $0.99 to $24.99.
How it came about
The business behind the app is much older than the app itself:
| Timeline | What happened |
|---|---|
| 2025-12-31 to 2026-01-07 | A 5-person team built a prototype in 4 days, launched it as a Postype in-site feature, opened it to beta creators first, then to everyone. |
| 2026-01 | Launched "generate characters from posts," with the 1th character contest; one held every month since |
| 2026-04-07 | Creator revenue-share program: once a character reaches thresholds such as 100k conversations and 500 users, creators get 5% of paid chat revenue, up to 10% |
| 2026-07-30 | Launched Story Mode; also ran a "move house" campaign: original stories with 5,000+ conversations on other platforms were brought over and given 10k to 30k KRW in Naver Pay points based on conversation volume; if they then generated 10k conversations within 30 days of moving, another 10k was added, plus on-site promotion slots |
| 2026-08 | Conversation volume grew 367% versus January (VentureSquare, 9-15) |
| 2026-10-08 | Standalone Android app listed, with the update note reading only "The CharacterTalk app is now available!" |
The parent platform is sizable: Postype has 8.5M cumulative registrations, 490k people bought content in August, and 47k creators earned income (VentureSquare, 9-15). Its users are mostly women who like fanfic, BL, and romance content, exactly the group most willing to pay for AI character chat. There's no standalone iOS app; iPhone users still use the feature inside the main Postype app, so this package's install count is only a small slice of the whole business.
Where the traffic comes from
First the numbers. Google Play installs: 10-29 about 2,200,11-01 about 4,400,11-02 about 7,300,11-05 about 8,500. Play install counts jump in tiers, so single-day figures are unreliable, but it's clear the volume was concentrated from late October to around 2 early November, then slowed. The charts moved the other way: Korea Play Entertainment Top Free peaked at #39,11-06 on 10-30 and fell to #94; Top Grossing sat between #111 and #124 and has been climbing slowly. It has charted in only one store, Korea.
There are five sources, all findable in its own public material:
- Traffic from the parent platform. In an interview with Sep 15 team's PO, the business side said in their own words: "users clicked the in-site banner but didn't convert to chat" and "CRM pushes to old users convert very few." So banners and pushes have been running all along. The standalone app shares accounts and points with the main site; a Korean forum user on dcinside said they tried it because "I still had Postype points left over from before."
- X and TikTok paid ads. Same interview: "So far, we've mainly acquired new users through paid ads like X and TikTok." The team reviews CPI, CTR, CVR and ROAS together every day; creator partnerships haven't formally started. I couldn't find what creatives they ran.
- Creators bring their own fans. The monthly contest's top prize is ₩300K plus guaranteed promotion; the 8st edition (10-14 to 11-02) requires works to be published here only. Creators promote their characters on X and fans follow, which is how the user from the opening came in.
- Launch perks. The standalone app's check-in coupons roughly doubled: 7 days, 10/10/14/10/10/10/20 coupons each, versus the usual 5/5/7/5/5/5/10.
- Official X account giveaways: retweet to win Naver Pay vouchers, and points for reaching affinity level 3.
Almost no organic reach: the official TikTok account's related videos got only a few hundred views (TikTok, 11-06). Hardly anyone talks about it on X unprompted.
The most interesting part is its new-user funnel. June's team found that fewer than 30% of new users sent a first message. They made two changes: pre-fill the chat profile with the user's Postype nickname, and automatically grant a free chat coupon when the first message is sent. Comparing two weeks before and after, the share of new users sending a first message rose from 28.3% to 43.2%, and average first-week revenue per new user went up 35%. Their rationale: people who used a free coupon and then paid spent 3.9x as much on day one as paid-only users, and came back 2.5x as often on day two.
Who it's competing with
Korea's AI character chat market is already crowded, with the leaders set; CharacterTalk is a latecomer (install counts from Google Play, 11-06):
| Product | Scale | How it differs |
|---|---|---|
| zeta(Scatter Lab) | 7.72M installs; February, #1 in time spent among Korean AI apps | Aimed at the mass market, skews teens and twenties, lots of free quota and ads |
| 크랙 Crack(wrtn) | 1.15M installs; #4 in Korean Entertainment Top Grossing | Backed by the AI platform wrtn, also pitching "I'm the protagonist of the web novel" |
| WHIF | 1.6M installs, mainly in Southeast Asia | Romance and BL leaning, expanding overseas |
| Melting | 400K installs; #13 in Korean Entertainment Top Grossing | Purely romance-focused standalone app |
| Caveduck / BabeChat | 260k / 170k | Users create their own characters; BabeChat has looser content limits |
| Repin, Mood, Manneri and others | 10k to 40k each | This year 6, July and the small apps that came out alongside it |
8,500 installs, two to three orders of magnitude below zeta and Crack. In July it ran a "moving house" campaign, poaching proven stories and authors directly from those rivals.
Could I follow it?
Copying it won't work as-is. It hit Top Grossing in the month it launched, thanks to three things followers can't get: 8.5M registered users and the points they hold, 10 months of accumulated creator character libraries, and a 11-person team with a paid-acquisition squad watching ROAS daily. Without those, a new Korean-language character chat app faces what Repin and Mood faced: tens of thousands of installs each, stuck in the back half of the Entertainment chart.
Taking it to another country isn't easy either. Every major market already has leaders like Character.AI, PolyBuzz and zeta, and the economics are real: every reply costs model fees. It used free coupons to win first-week revenue because its parent platform's users had already shown they'd pay.
What you can take is the playbook, and it only applies if you already run a content community:
- Build the feature on-site first, then split out the app. Prototype in 4 days, validate on-site for 10 months, and once people are paying, open a separate bundle ID to take paid acquisition and store search.
- Let creators build the characters, share revenue. You don't have to produce the content; payouts are settled alongside creators' existing income, which gives them a reason to bring people in from X.
- Use prize money to move stories over from rival platforms. Set the bar at "already has 5,000 chats elsewhere" and you buy content that's been validated.
- Cut the first-message barrier to zero. Pre-filled profiles plus a coupon on the first message: anyone can copy this, and it has numbers behind it.
- Tiered models, pay per message. Premium models for heavy users, an ad-supported free tier for everyone else.
If it were you
D
Worth knowing, not worth copying. This isn't a new product breaking out; it's a platform with 8.5M users opening a new entry point for an existing business. It runs on the parent platform's users, points and creators, which followers can't get, and the Korean category's leaders are already set.
Who it's for: teams that already run a content community, fan site, web-novel site or creator platform and want to add an AI character chat revenue stream. They can follow its order: on-site feature → creator revenue share → standalone app.
Who it's not for: indie devs or small teams starting an AI character chat app from scratch. No ready-made characters, no paying users, model costs per message, and paid acquisition means competing on price with zeta, Crack and Character.AI.
How to build it (if you're the first type): start with the simplest on-site character chat, let creators generate characters from existing works in one click; add revenue share once you have paid data; grant coupons on new users' first message.
How to get users: start with your own on-site banners and pushes; then use creator revenue share and contests to bring fans in from X; once the standalone app is live, add X and TikTok paid ads.
Timing: there's no window. This is a business you build slowly, not an opportunity you race for.
Signs you've got it wrong: ① If it was steadily in the top 50 of the Korean Play Entertainment Top Grossing chart before 2027 January, the standalone app itself has taken off, not just a migration from the parent; ② If it launches the iOS standalone version, or expands to Japan or Chinese-speaking markets and charts there, the "creators + revenue share" approach can travel and deserves a fresh look; ③ Conversely, if its Top Free rank keeps sliding and installs stay around 10K through year-end, the lessons are worth less too.

One line
Korean fan-fiction and web-novel platform Postype split its AI character chat feature, "캐릭터톡", out into a standalone Android app. It was running in the web and main app since 2026-01. This isn't a new product starting from zero; it's a mature business with 8.5M registered users, 10 months of operation and a built-in creator ecosystem, opening a new distribution channel. The "breakout" on the data card is parent-platform traffic plus paid acquisition, showing up under a separate package name.
1. How to read the data
| Metric | Value | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Total installs | 8,508(11-06) | Google Play library app_profile |
| New in the last 7 days | 6,278 | googleplay library |
| Install curve | 10-25 about 1,684 → 10-29 about 2,230 → 11-02 about 6,695 → 11-06 about 8,508; the days from 10-30 to 11-02 averaged about 1,100 a day, then fell back to around 400 a day | googleplay library app_day_ext (AppstoreSpy estimate) |
| Korea Entertainment Top Free | 10-29 Rank 41 → 10-30 Rank 39 (best) → 11-06 Rank 94, sliding down | googleplay library chart_rank |
| Korea Entertainment Top Grossing | Rank 124 to 111, slowly climbing | googleplay library chart_rank |
| Countries charted | Korea only | googleplay library |
| In-app purchases | $0.99–$24.99 per item | Data card |
| Same developer's main app | POSTYPE (com.postype.play) on Play: 1.15M cumulative installs; main iOS app (id 1502367642) has 6,784 ratings in the Korea store, best Social Top Grossing rank #13 | googleplay / appstore library |
How to read these numbers:
- Its Top Free rank fell from #39 to #94, yet installs were growing fastest over the same period. Play's maxInstalls jumps in steps rather than updating smoothly every day, so single-day increments are unreliable. Overall, the app has averaged 500–600 installs a day over its first 4 weeks. That's steady, not explosive.
- It ranks around #111 on Top Grossing, so people are paying for this standalone app. But the bar near #110 in Korea's entertainment Top Grossing is not high, and that only tells us there is some paying.
- There is no standalone iOS app. iOS users still use 캐릭터톡 (Chattier 2026-11-05 verified: a separate Android app 1.0.2, while on iOS it's inside the main Postype app 3.97.0). So the install count for this package name is only a small slice of the overall 캐릭터톡 business.
2. What it is and where it came from
- 2025-12-31 to 2026-01-07: 5 people (front end 2, back end 2, PM 1) spent 4 days on a PoC using Claude Sonnet on AWS Bedrock, then shipped it as a feature inside Postype. 12-31 it opened to beta creators, 1-07 to all users. Operations first built characters in-house, then recruited beta creators so there would be enough characters to chat with at launch. Official announcement, Pre-launch phase 1, Pre-launch phase 2
- 2026-01: Launched "auto-generate from posts," letting creators turn novels or character-setting posts they published on Postype into AI characters with one click. Also held the 1nd character contest. Announcement
- 2026-04-07: "캐릭터톡 Partner" creator revenue-share program. After hitting thresholds such as 100k conversations and 500 users, creators get 5% of paid chat revenue, rising to 10% at the top tier. Announcement
- 2026-07-30: Launched "Story Mode": a story can hold up to 10 characters, with stats like affection and multiple endings. Also ran a "migration event": original stories with more than 5,000 conversations on other platforms can be moved to Postype, rewarded up to 40,000P each, plus promotion slots on the site. This is directly poaching creators from rival platforms. Story Mode, Migration event
- 2026-07: Expanded multilingual support, and overseas users from the Chinese-speaking world and Japan started coming in. August 캐릭터톡 conversation volume was 367% higher than January. VentureSquare 2026-09-15
- 2026-09-15: In a PO interview, the 캐릭터톡 team is 11 people, watching CPI / CTR / CVR / ROAS daily. User acquisition "has mainly relied on paid ads on X and TikTok so far"; organic reach has included an X promotion campaign, and creator partnerships have not formally started. The new-user funnel was also changed: Postype nicknames are pre-filled in the chat profile, and sending the first message automatically grants free conversation tickets. After the change, the share of new users sending a first message rose from 28.3% to 43.2%, and average first-week revenue per new user went up 35%. Interview original
- 2026-10-08: The standalone app "CharacterTalk - Story AI Chat" was listed on Play, with a release note that just says "The CharacterTalk app is now available!" The app has a "launch event": check-ins grant extra conversation tickets (the check-in table is 10/10/14/10/10/10/20 tickets, versus the usual 5/5/7/5/5/5/10). 챗티어 listing page
- 10-14 to 11-02: Round 8 of the 캐릭터톡 contest (romance / BL / GL; entries must be posted only on 캐릭터톡). The contest runs monthly, steadily feeding new content to the platform. Announcement
Product format: payment uses Postype points (P). Models are tiered and charged per message: 프라임톡 (Opus) 150P per message, 알파톡 2.0 (Gemini Pro) 70P, 알파톡 1.0 and 플러스톡 (Sonnet) 60P, while 라이트톡 is free with ads. Long replies and memory notes over 500 characters also cost extra points. These are compiled by 챗티어 from the official help page and have not been checked line by line.
3. Competitors
Korean AI character chat is crowded now, with the leaders already set. 캐릭터톡 is a latecomer:
| Product | Where | Launched | Scale | How 캐릭터톡 differs |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| zeta(Scatter Lab) | iOS / Android | 2022-05(Play) | Play cumulative 7.72M; 2026-02 is #1 in Korean AI apps by time spent and second only to ChatGPT in users (zdnet, namu); #2 in the Japan store's Entertainment Top Grossing | Aimed at the mass market, mainly users aged 10 to 20, with generous free quotas and lots of ads. 캐릭터톡 draws on Postype's fan-fiction and female-oriented creator ecosystem and relies on points, not ads. |
| 크랙 Crack(wrtn) | iOS / Android | 2025-03 | 1.15M on Play; Korea entertainment Top Grossing #4 | Backed by wrtn, a large AI platform that also focuses on "I'm the protagonist" web novels. 캐릭터톡 characters come from existing creators and IP. |
| Melting(Watnee) | Android / iOS | 2025-06 | 400k on Play; Korea entertainment Top Grossing #13 | Purely romance-focused standalone app |
| BabeChat | Web / App | 2025-02 | 170k on Play; Korea entertainment Top Grossing #32 | Wide content range, lots of community-sourced reposts |
| Caveduck(Warp Space) | Web / App | 2025-01 | 260k on Play | A platform where users build their own characters |
| WHIF(Bunkerkids) | Android / iOS | 2025-10 | 1.6M on Play; mostly Southeast Asia | Romance / BL focus, expanding overseas |
| Repin, 무드 (Mood), 매너리스, 바이트, and others | Android | 2026-06 to 2026-07 | 10k to 40k each | Small apps from the same wave as 캐릭터톡, also in the lower part of Korea's entertainment chart |
| Character.AI / PolyBuzz / Emochi | Global | 2021 to 2024 | tens of millions | Global market at large; Korean-language and female-oriented content is not the focus |
All install figures above come from the googleplay library app_profile, dated 2026-11-06.
4. Growth tactics (with evidence)
- Traffic from the parent platform and CRM (confirmed): the PO interview directly mentions "banners on the site" and "CRM push notifications to long-time users." Postype has 8.5M cumulative registrations and over 2M app downloads; the standalone app's landing page is postype.com/character-talk, sharing accounts and points with the main site.
- Paid acquisition on X / TikTok (confirmed, but no specific creatives matched): the PO's exact words were "지금까지는 X와 TikTok 등 유료 광고를 중심으로 신규 이용자를 만나왔습니다" (so far, new users have been reached mainly through paid ads on X, TikTok, and others). Our metaads, googleads and tiktokads libraries don't track Postype, so not finding it doesn't mean it wasn't run.
- Campaigns from the official X account (confirmed): retweet giveaways (Naver Pay 5,000 KRW vouchers) and events like "raise affection to level 3 for points." X, event announcement
- Supply incentives for creators (confirmed): a monthly contest (top prize 300k KRW + guaranteed promotion + revenue-share pass), the 파트너 revenue share, and migration rewards for poaching creators from rival platforms. Creators promote their characters on X, which pulls fans in along the way. Users on 챗티어 write things like "I signed up to play a character from an author I like who only published on Postype." 챗티어 reviews
- Standalone app launch bonus (confirmed): check-in tickets roughly doubled.
- Organic TikTok reach (essentially none): official account postype_official's 캐릭터톡 videos only got a few hundred views (TikHub search, 2026-11-06).
5. Why it could break out (or really, why it shows up in recall)
- The users aren't new: Postype is already the paid creation platform where Korean fan-fiction, BL and romance-focused female users are most concentrated (2026-08 that month, 490k people bought content and 47k creators earned income). The PO said, "Long-time users keep coming back and DAU is rising, but new users aren't arriving as fast." So the standalone app first captured returning users and traffic from the parent platform.
- Content supply was ready-made: over 10 months, 캐릭터톡 built up characters and stories from creators, and with revenue share and contests, the standalone app had content to chat with from day one. The team itself said this was key in the pre-launch phase: if there aren't enough characters at launch, users who leave rarely come back.
- Payment habits and accounts were already in place: the points system is shared with the main Postype site. Users on dcinside say, "I still had Postype points left over from before, so I tried it." That's why the standalone app charted in Korea's entertainment Top Grossing (around #111) right after launch.
- Conversion funnel was optimized: pre-filled nicknames plus a ticket for the first message lifted first-week revenue from new users by 35%. This was tuned on the parent platform before being carried over.
- The standalone package mainly serves paid acquisition and store search: on Play, it uses terms like "Story AI Chat" and "web novel protagonist" to compete with zeta and Crack for the same search results and ad audiences. Installs clustered in the 10-30 to 11-02 wave, then fell back and the free chart slid, which looks more like a campaign or event push than organic spread.
6. Differentiation
- Differentiators: ① characters come from existing creators and their IP ("characters from your works can be chatted with directly," one-click character generation from posts), and "no creator works are used to train the AI," which matters to copyright-conscious fan creators; ② creators get a share of paid chat revenue, settled together with what they earn from selling posts and receiving tips on Postype; ③ tiered per-message pricing, with the top tier using a flagship model like Opus, aimed at heavy users who find free apps' answers too weak, while ads are kept low.
- Is that why it broke out? Partly. What actually mattered was Postype's existing users, points and creator network. The product's own differentiation is secondary. As for chat quality, user reviews are not good: all 2 reviews on 챗티어 are 1 stars, with some saying "the same lines keep repeating"; a dcinside user says "Tingle spoiled me, and I can't really play on ㅍㅌ (Postype) anymore." Scale also tells the story: 8.5 thousand installs, two to three orders of magnitude behind zeta (7.72M) and Crack (1.15M). It hasn't broken out yet.
7. Visibility and copycats
- The standalone app itself: no media coverage found. Searches for "캐릭터톡" and "postype" in the X corpus (x-radar, last 60 days) return 0 posts, and 챗티어 has only 2 reviews. Revenue is not public.
- The 캐릭터톡 business: mentioned in passing in Postype's ad-business press releases (VentureSquare / 머니투데이, 2026-09-15, with the figure "August conversation volume up 367% over January"), and discussed in the team's tech blog and job posts. So it's known within small circles in Korea's AI character chat scene and the dcinside "AI 채팅 여성향" board.
- Imitators: none found. If anything, it is itself a follower of the zeta / Crack model.
8. What others can learn
- Platforms with a content community or creator base can use "creators build characters, revenue share by spend" to fill the AI character chat supply cheaply. Test it as an in-app feature first (4-day PoC), and only split out a standalone app to take paid acquisition and store search once it's validated.
- To fill starter content, use migration rewards to poach proven high-conversation stories from rival platforms (set a threshold, e.g. 5,000+ conversations on other platforms).
- Lower the barrier for a new user's first message (pre-filled profile, automatic tickets) to directly lift first-week revenue.
- Tiered model pricing: charge high per message for premium models, offer cheaper models free with ads, separating heavy spenders from free users.
9. Uncertain
- Whether the 10-30 to 11-02 install wave came from paid acquisition, in-site push, or events is unclear (ad libraries don't track Postype).
- Standalone app revenue and retention are unknown. 캐릭터톡's overall revenue and MAU are not public.
- Users from overseas (Chinese-speaking regions, Japan) grew from July on, but the standalone app has only charted in Korea so far. Whether it will expand to other stores is unknown.
- The model tiers and prices on 챗티어 were compiled by a third party and have not been checked line by line against official sources.
