A doctor-handwriting-reader app, #1 in search, under 10,000 installs: a Pakistani ASO agency's playbook for small languages
What it is An Android app: snap a photo of a handwritten doctor's prescription, convert it to text, set medication reminders, and ask an AI questions. It earns from ads and in-app purchases.
Why it's taking off Lots of people can't read doctors' handwriting, and Google Lens and ChatGPT videos have already taught people that "AI can read prescriptions." The Play apps built specifically for this are small and weak. This one won the top store search spot with Spanish keywords and a 4.5 rating.
CHow you could follow it Don't copy the prescription idea. Learn the playbook: find pain points that big-company AI can handle but users still go to the store to search for a dedicated app for. Pick languages nobody has localized for and take the search spot, and treat it as one cell in a multi-app portfolio.
- Data (updated daily) · first launch 2026-08-05 · 11-07 installs 9,685
Android · Total installs worldwide Data 2026-10-29 → 2026-11-07 (10 days, 10 observations). Google's detail page only refreshes install counts every other day, so a flat day doesn't mean nobody installed.
"Can't read the doctor's handwriting" is something everyone has run into. There's a Google Play app built for exactly that, Escáner de Receta Médica AI, and it hit under 10K installs in three months. It's worth a look not because it's big, but because it grabbed the #1 spot for searches like "lector de recetas médicas" for almost nothing. One more thing: this category's ceiling is about this high.
Two reviews on day four
In 2026 Aug 5, a developer account called "Card Scanner" published Prescription Scanner & Reader on Google Play. On Aug 9, the first two reviews showed up, both in English, both 5 stars and long. Ali Haider wrote: "Great prescription scanner! The app is easy to navigate, scans documents clearly…"; Saim Javed wrote: "Very useful and easy-to-use app! … The interface is simple, the results are clear…". Both read like store copy. Both names sound Pakistani, and the account belongs to Eclix Tech, an SEO and app store optimization (ASO) agency in Faisalabad, Pakistan, whose website says that is their core business. So these two are most likely launch reviews written in-house (inference, not verified).
The reviews after that are more real, and much shorter. On Sep 18, a Brazilian user, Tácio Luiz, gave it 2 star: "Infelizmente não conseguiu ler o nome do medicamento da receita" (Unfortunately it couldn't read the medicine name on the prescription). On Oct 22, a Mexican user, Ivonne Daniel, left one word: "basura" (garbage). There's also an Arabic one: "برنامج لا يصلح" (this program is useless).
Its rating is 4.5: the Mexico store page 11-06 shows 166 ratings, of which 127 are 5-star and 12 are 1-star. Only about ten of the 166 ratings have written reviews, so most people just tapped stars and wrote nothing. This looks like the "rate us" prompt that pops up inside the app (inference).
How big it actually got
| Metric | Metric | Sources |
|---|---|---|
| Total installs | 9,685 (store shows 5K+) | Google Play,11-06 |
| Last 7 days | +1,617 | Google Play,11-06 |
| Daily adds | August 30–60, September 60–100, after October 150–230 | Third-party estimate |
| Charts | Mexico Medical free chart ranks 82–99 (on chart daily since 10-29); Argentina Medical free chart ranks 98–110 (10-30 to 11-02) | Google Play charts |
| Rating | Mexico store 4.5 stars / 166 ratings; Brazil store 4.7 stars; US store not shown | store page, 11-06 |
| Monetization | Ads + in-app purchases, $5.99–24.99 | Store page |
The curve climbs steadily, with no single day of spikes, which doesn't look like a one-off paid push or a featured placement. The Mexico medical chart is an easy one to get on: #99 there is only about 10K installs, and #1 Farmacias del Ahorro has 11.1M. So it did chart, but on a very shallow chart. No revenue figures are public; at this install count, revenue should be small (estimate).
Where users come from: almost entirely store search
11-06 I ran searches on Google Play myself:
- In the US store, searching "prescription reader" and "prescription scanner" both put it at #1; searching "doctor handwriting reader" puts it at #2.
- In the Mexico store, searching "lector de recetas medicas" and "escaner de receta medica" both put it at #1.
Its Spanish description is almost a keyword dump. In one paragraph, "escanear recetas médicas", "lector de recetas médicas", "leer letra del doctor" and "recordatorio de medicamentos" repeat over and over. It doesn't read smoothly, but search engines can parse it. The Brazil store listing also has its own Portuguese title, "AI Scanner de receita médica".
Other channels barely show up. I found no ads from this developer in the Meta, Google or TikTok ad libraries (not finding them doesn't mean they didn't run any, but the curve doesn't look like heavy paid buying). On TikTok, searching its name or "app leer letra de doctor receta" only turns up videos of people reading prescriptions with Google Lens and ChatGPT, none of them for this app. The same account also runs two much bigger apps: Handwriting to Text Converter (656K installs) and Ai Chatbot (3.96M installs). Using interstitial ads from existing apps to push installs of a new app is a standard move for studios like this, but I found no direct evidence of it this time (inference).
Why it got to #1
Demand was already educated by others. In December 2022, Google announced that Lens could read doctors' messy handwriting (TechCrunch covered it), and Spanish-language media were still writing about it in 2024. On TikTok, @josephramirezrivera posted "Lee recetas medicas con Chatgpt" (reading prescriptions with ChatGPT) on August 2025, 810K views and nearly 10K likes. Some people who saw these go search the store for "lector de recetas", looking for an app that does just that.
The spot has stayed open. The dedicated prescription-reading apps on Play are all small. The biggest, Prescription Reader AI: Meds (by India's MS Production, listed 2025-06), has only 54K installs and a rating of 3.4. The other dozen or so similar apps mostly have a few hundred to a few thousand installs and target English-speaking users in India. On iOS, there are almost no similar apps, and the earliest one still has 0 ratings.
Few people build in Spanish. Competitors almost all have English-only pages. This one swapped the full title and description into Spanish, which is why it only surfaced in Mexico and Argentina.
Almost no R&D cost. Handwriting recognition comes from the same account's Handwriting to Text Converter, the AI chat from Ai Chatbot, and "ads + IAP" is a ready-made template. For the prescription use case, it's existing capability in a new outfit.
The product has no real differentiation: scanning, text conversion, AI Q&A and medication reminders are all things competitors already offer, and ChatGPT, Gemini and Google Lens can do it for free, often better. The one-star review saying it can't read the medicine name shows that recognition quality for this kind of app is unreliable. Its "edge" is entirely in distribution: language, keywords, ratings.
Who it's competing with
| Competitors | Scale | How it differs |
|---|---|---|
| Prescription Reader AI: Meds (India) | 54K installs, 3.4 stars | Launched a year earlier and bigger, but low rating, no Spanish localization, ranks below it in search |
| AI Prescription Reader(Droid Apps Community) | 22k installs | Not updated since 2025-12 |
| PharmaScan AI, MedScan | 1.1–15k installs | Scans medicine boxes and explains drugs, doesn't read handwriting |
| Dhruvian Labs, RxLens, Flurix and a string of small shells | Tens to hundreds of installs, up to 8K | Most aimed at India; new ones keep appearing through 2026 |
| Medisafe, MyTherapy | 600–10M installs | Big brands built purely for medication reminders; this app's reminders are a side feature |
| ChatGPT / Gemini / Google Lens | All users | Free and more accurate; the real substitute |
If it were you
C: Copy the playbook, but don't treat this category as a business. "Existing AI capability × a specific pain everyone understands × a language competitors haven't localized" can cheaply win the top search spot. But the biggest app in this category has only 50K installs, and it's sitting under free ChatGPT and Google Lens.
Who it suits: small studios that already run several utility apps, know ASO, and can launch across many languages at once, treating this as one cell in a matrix.
Who it doesn't suit: indie devs hoping one app will support them; anyone who wants to build a serious medical product (misreading a medicine name carries real risk and invites bad reviews and removal).
How to do it: Same idea, but don't copy the recipe. Look for other pain points where "big-tech AI can do it, but users still go search the store for a dedicated App". Before you ship, check the store search: are the top 5 results all small shells with a few thousand installs and 3-star-or-so ratings? Pick languages nobody has claimed yet: Arabic, Indonesian, French (North and West Africa), Turkish. Spanish and Portuguese are already taken.
How to get users: Store search only. Use the titles and descriptions locals would actually search for; add a rating prompt in the app to push the rating above 4.5; if you have a big-traffic app of your own, use it to cross-promote. No paid ads or content needed.
How early you need to be: Spots for these keywords usually stay open for six months to a year, and by 2026 new shells were already fighting over "prescription reader". If you're going to do it, do it before the first half of 2027, while it and its competitors still haven't covered every language.
Signs you've misjudged it: ① It hit 2027K installs and got into the top 50 of the Mexico medical chart before 30 January, which would show the category runs deeper than it looks and is worth doing seriously, not as one cell; ② The reverse: if its daily installs drop to double digits, or someone else takes the #1 search spot, this kind of ASO position is hard to hold, and copy-paste plays are harder to pay back; ③ If Google or OpenAI add a "read prescription" entry point directly in the system camera or Play search results, the whole category is gone.

Why Prescription Scanner & Reader (Spanish name Escáner de Receta Médica AI) made it onto the charts
Package com.prescription.scanner.reader · Google Play · Medical · developer account "Card Scanner" (run by Eclix Tech, an SEO/ASO outsourcing firm in Faisalabad, Pakistan) · store launch 2026-08-05 · current version 1.0.6 (2026-10-16)
Bottom line
It has only run at small scale: under 10k total installs, a hundred or two hundred a day. It relies on an ASO outsourcing firm that rebranded its in-house handwriting OCR and captured Play search #1 with exact terms like "prescription reader / lector de recetas médicas." Add Spanish localization and it reached the tail of the Mexico and Argentina medical free charts, which have low entry thresholds. The product itself has no differentiation; ChatGPT and Google Lens can do the same thing. It took off because everyone knows the need "can't read the doctor's handwriting," while the Play apps built for it are small and weak, leaving the top spots empty.
1. Data: how big it really got
- Total installs 9,685,7 days +1,617 (googleplay library app_profile, 2026-11-06). This is the global cumulative count; the store page shows the "5K+" tier.
- Curve since launch (googleplay library app_day_ext, AppstoreSpy estimates): mid-August 173 installs, end of August about 1,000, end of September about 3,400, end of October about 8,600. Daily adds rose from 30–60 in August to 60–100 in September, then 150–230 from October on. The trend is steady acceleration, not a one-off spike. The library's daily records alternate between values like 0, 500, 0, 700 (10-29 to 11-06), which is caused by Play refreshing maxInstalls only every few days, not by ad-buy pulses.
- Chart presence (googleplay library chart_rank): on the Mexico MEDICAL Top Free chart every day since 10-29, ranking 82→99; on the Argentina MEDICAL Top Free chart charted from 10-30 to 11-02, ranking 98→110. Never on an overall chart, never on Top Grossing. Mexico's #99 medical app has only about 10k installs, a very low bar. The #1 app, Farmacias del Ahorro, has 11.1M.
- Ratings: the Mexico store page shows 4.5 stars from 166 ratings (google-play-scraper pulled mx/es, 2026-11-06), split 5 one-star 127, 4 two-star 25, 1 three-star 12. The US page shows no rating, so the library has NULL; the recall card's "no ratings at all" is wrong. Written reviews number only about 10 (English 8, Spanish 2, Portuguese 1). Most of the 166 ratings are stars with no text, which looks like they came from the in-app review prompt.
- Suspicious seeded reviews: 8-10 (day 5 after launch) has two English 5-star long reviews, "Great prescription scanner! The app is easy to navigate…" and "Very useful and easy-to-use app!…". The wording has an ASO-copy feel and is likely launch reviews from insiders (unverified). Later genuine reviews are short and include negatives: "basura" (Spanish, 1 stars, 10-22), "Infelizmente não conseguiu ler o nome do medicamento da receita" (Portuguese, 2 stars, 9-18, saying it can't read the drug name), "disappointed," and an Arabic review "برنامج لا يصلح" (this program doesn't work).
- Monetization: contains ads, in-app purchases $5.99–$24.99 per item (app_snap). No public revenue data; given this install scale, revenue is likely very small.
Note: the recall card says it only spread to one small market, Mexico. That's inaccurate. The library details were pulled from the US store (detail_cc=us); it can be installed in the US and India, and has English reviews. It only shows up on the medical charts of the two Spanish-speaking markets, Mexico and Argentina.
2. Competitors: who else does the same thing

In US store search for "prescription reader" it ranks below this app; in Spanish search it ranks #2. |

| Prescription Scanner: MedLogsRx | iOS | 2025-12-28 | 0 ratings (appstore DB) | This category is almost empty on iOS |
| Medisafe / MyTherapy / Pillo | Android+iOS | 2012 / 2015 / 2022 | 6.38M / 9.84M / 690K installs | Only does medication reminders; a big brand. This app treats reminders as a side feature |
| August AI Prescription Reader, InkScan, letsnova | Web | 2025–2026 | Unknown | Free web tool capturing SEO traffic |
| Google Lens reads doctors' handwritten prescriptions | Big-company features | 2022-12 announced at Google for India (TechCrunch 2022-12-18) | All Android users | System-level and free; Spanish-language media were still covering it 2024 years later |
| ChatGPT / Gemini / Copilot photo prescription reading | Big-company features | 2024– | huge | TikTok "Lee recetas medicas con Chatgpt" 810k views (@josephramirezrivera, 2025-08) |
Bottom line: this category on Play is all small shells; the biggest has only 50k installs, and there are no brands. The real substitutes are general AI tools like ChatGPT and Google Lens.
3. Growth levers: where users come from
- Store search / ASO (confirmed, main channel). 2026-11-06 tested Play store search with google-play-scraper: in the US, searching "prescription reader" and "prescription scanner" both rank #1; "doctor handwriting reader" ranks #2. In the Mexico store, "lector de recetas medicas" and "escaner de receta medica" also rank #1. The Spanish store name is "Escáner de Receta Médica AI," and the Spanish description repeatedly stuffs "escanear recetas médicas," "lector de recetas médicas," "leer letra del doctor," and "recordatorio de medicamentos." The developer Eclix Tech's website (eclixtech.com) states its core business is SEO and App Store Optimization.
- Secondary exposure from category charts (confirmed, small volume). Ranking #82–110 on the Mexico and Argentina MEDICAL Top Free charts brings a bit of browsing traffic.
- In-app rating prompt (inferred). 166 ratings correspond to about 10 written reviews, and 4–5 stars make up 92%. This props up the 4.5 score, which helps search ranking and conversion.
- Seeded reviews (inferred, unverified). See the two English long reviews noted above, 8-10.
- Paid acquisition (not found). Card Scanner / Eclix Tech does not appear as an advertiser in the metaads, googleads, or tiktokads libraries. But these libraries only track listed products, so absence doesn't mean no spend. The curve shows smooth acceleration, not heavy paid buying.
- Content, creators, social (none). TikTok searches for "Escáner de Receta Médica AI" and "app leer letra de doctor receta" return content about Google Lens and ChatGPT, with no videos about this app. x-radar has no relevant posts either.
- Matrix cross-promotion (possible, unverified). The same account's Handwriting to Text Converter has 656k installs and 18k ratings (2025-07 launch), and Ai Chatbot has 3.96M installs. Interstitial cross-promotion is a common practice for studios like this, but we have seen no direct evidence.
4. Why it took off
- The need already exists, and people have been educated. "Can't read the doctor's handwriting" is a common pain point across Latin America, India, and the Middle East. Google Lens's 2022-year promotion, plus TikTok videos on "reading prescriptions with ChatGPT" (810k views), have already shown users that AI can do it. The people who search the store for "lector de recetas" are that educated segment.
- The category's top spots are empty. The biggest app built for this on Play has only 54k installs and a 3.4 rating. A new package only needs accurate titles and keywords, and ratings at 4.5, to take the top search spot.
- Spanish localization, least competition. Most rivals target English-speaking users in India; this one localized its title and description into Spanish. That's why it charted only in Mexico and Argentina, where the tail of the medical chart has an entry bar of around ten thousand installs.
- Tech and monetization are off the shelf. The handwriting OCR comes from the same account's Handwriting to Text Converter, the AI chat from Ai Chatbot, and ads plus in-app subscriptions are standard templates. Building a new niche app costs very little.
- No evidence on retention or payment. A negative review says it can't read drug names. Medication reminders are the only feature likely to keep people around. How much the $24.99 in-app tier actually sells is not visible.
5. Differentiation
The product itself has no differentiation: scanning, OCR, AI chat, and medication reminders are all offered by rivals, and general AI can do it all. The real differences are in distribution: first, Spanish-localized titles and keywords; second, a rating far higher than the older rival MS Production (4.5 vs 3.4); third, packing the three search terms "scan + reminders + AI Q&A" into one package, so one package catches several search groups. These distribution differences are why it surfaced on the Spanish-speaking charts.
6. How many people know about it now
No press coverage, no X posts, no TikTok content, and no public revenue. Before the recall, almost no one had noticed it.
7. What to borrow
- The playbook is "existing capability × high-intent long-tail keywords × small-language localization": off-the-shelf OCR or LLM capability, repackaged to address one concrete pain point everyone understands. Then target languages rivals haven't localized (Spanish, Portuguese, Arabic) to take the top search spot.
- Charts in small countries' medical and utility categories have low entry barriers; roughly 10k installs can get you into the top 100.
- The ceiling is also clear. The biggest app in this category has only 50k installs, and Google Lens and ChatGPT are free substitutes. It's suited to being one cell in a matrix, not worth building as a standalone business.
8. Still unclear
- Whether there is paid acquisition (ad libraries only track listed products), and whether there is same-account matrix cross-promotion.
- How much it makes; how much of the $5.99–24.99 in-app purchases actually converts.
- Are the two English five-star reviews from 8-10 fake; how much of the rating came from pop-ups that push for reviews.
- Install split by country (Play doesn't publish it; the only visible signals are Spanish-speaking countries charting and English-speaking countries leaving reviews).
