# Two swinging creators built their own swinger app: how Primal Play cold-started with 160k followers

**What it is** : a private community app for swingers and open-relationship circles, with photo verification for everyone, shared profiles for couples, a private photo album, and a feed.

**Why it took off** : the two educational creators in the scene (each about 80k TikTok followers) are the founders. In their daily content they casually ask followers to download and give five stars. They ran a free beta and gave lifetime memberships to early couples, to fill the side that was scarcest first.

**C** **How to follow it** Don't copy this app itself. If you already have a niche community of tens of thousands of precise followers, build a vertical community the same way: make the scarce side free and charge the abundant side, and win users with your own content.

Grade C: it took off on the founder's own reputation and audience in the niche, which followers can't copy. The swinger category already has Feeld, 3Fun, SDC and the nearly identical Pineapple Lifestyle, and this one is still very small. The playbook is worth studying; copying the app itself isn't worth it. Almost nobody knows about it yet

Data (updated daily) · first launch 2026-07-24 · 11-07 installs 2,410

Android · Total installs worldwide

Data 2026-10-29 → 2026-11-07 (10 days, 10 observations). Google's detail page only refreshes install counts every other day, so a flat day doesn't mean nobody installed.

Android · Ratings count (cumulative)

Data 2026-10-29 → 2026-11-07 (10 days, 10 observations)

Oct 29, a Facebook Reel from a couple of creators called The Impulsive Duo, with just one line: "Download Primal Play on Android and iOS Now!", got 65k views. Over the next few days, the app's daily Google Play installs rose from just over 60 to 110–140 (third-party estimate), reaching 6 cumulative installs by Nov 2,410, ranking #90 in the US Dating free chart. It's small, far from a hit. But there was no paid acquisition and no press. Two creators in the niche moved their audience into their own app, one piece at a time. Here's what it is, where users come from, how it makes money, and whether you can do the same.

### What it is

Primal Play is a private community app for the swinger / lifestyle scene (partner swapping, open relationships). The developer is Make Boise LLC in Boise, Idaho. It launched on iOS in Jun 28 and on Android in Jul 24. The website's hero line reads: "Meet with intention. A private social app for verified adults and couples."

A few things form its backbone:

- **Everyone gets verified** : you take a selfie in the app, and only after manual review can you browse, message, or post.

- **Couples share one profile** : each partner has their own login, and every message shows who sent it. One App Store reviewer wrote: "Couples can log in together, in their own apps. Nothing is hidden" (9-27).

- **Private photo album** : up to 8 photos, visible only if you approve the viewer, revocable at any time, with no notification sent to the other person.

- **Feed** : post and comment, so you can see how someone talks before deciding to chat.

- **Passport** : browse people in a destination city before a trip or business travel.

No swiping. The features aren't new. The selling points of the similar Pineapple Lifestyle are almost word for word the same: manual verification, linked couple profiles, a activity feed.

### The numbers: small, but growing

| | Metric | Sources |
|---|---|---|
| Google Play installs | 2,410(11-06), 7 days +778 | Google Play,11-06 |
| Play rating | 70 reviews, averaging 4.67,61 stars | Google Play,11-06 |
| US Dating free chart | 10-29 #122,11-01 #83,11-06 #90 | Google Play charts |
| iOS ratings | 496 reviews, averaging 4.64 | App Store,11-06 |
| iOS version | Went from 1.0 to 1.1.18 (10-23) in four months, about 20 versions | App Store version history |
| In-app purchases | $7.99–$59.99 each | Google Play |

iOS has roughly 7 times as many ratings as Android. This crowd, mostly middle-aged American couples, likely uses iPhones (inference). Android daily installs were about 45 in late September, fell back to around 25 in mid-October, and after the late-October Reel climbed to 110–140 per day (third-party estimate). Neither store has charted in the top grossing lists, so revenue is probably still very small.

### Where users come from: the founders are creators in the niche

The website says it plainly: "Professor Pineapple and The Impulsive Duo bring a 100,000+ person audience", plus "50,000+ newsletter readers".

- **Professor Pineapple** (TikTok @theprofessorpineapple1.0): 81.6k followers, 3,438 videos. Posts 4–5 short lifestyle advice videos a day, each getting a few hundred to a few thousand views, with a download call-to-action every day or two: 7-21 "It's free for a limited time during beta testing on iOS" (5,270 views), 10-08 "your sign to sign up for primal play", 11-03 "If you want to have success on a lifestyle app, make sure to download primal play".

- **The Impulsive Duo** (TikTok 77.6k followers; their Facebook Reels often get 100k to over 10 million views): 8-12 "Here is your sign to download Primal Play for free! Make sure to give a five star review", and 10-29, a download call that got 65k views.

The two accounts are very likely one family. TikTok has a hashtag page for "Mr Impulsive Professor Pineapple" (inference; their ownership ties to Make Boise LLC can't be found from outside).

Individual view counts aren't high. What works is **saying it every day, for four months, to people who are all the target users** . The biggest complaint in the lifestyle scene is fake profiles and safety. An app built by a "teacher" everyone in the scene knows is inherently more trustworthy than one from a faceless company. One user commented: "I saw a video by the Doc basically saying let's all work the bugs out together" (9-05). Followers came in wanting to help the teacher make it good.

The video asking for five stars also worked: 87% of Play ratings are five-star, and 0 are two-star.

There's no sign of paid acquisition: no related advertiser in the Meta ad library, zero discussion on X over the past four months, no press coverage, and no mention in third-party "best swinger apps" roundups. Adult dating is already hard to advertise on Meta and Google (whether the 10-29 Reel was boosted with money can't be seen from outside). The name also works against it: "primal play" is itself a BDSM term, so searching it returns mostly educational articles.

### How it makes money: pull in couples first, then charge single men

Dating platforms always lack women and couples, while single men are always in surplus. Primal Play writes this straight into its rules:

1. **Free beta first** : iOS was free in July, using early fans to bring couples in.

2. **Early couples get lifetime free membership** : 10-12 Professor Pineapple posted "Last call for primal play… It will be converting so any couples this is your sign to download or redownload so you get a free lifetime membership".

3. **Single men queue first and must pay before they can initiate contact** : the website FAQ states that single men join a waitlist first, can't send a first message without membership, and even members can only send "message requests"; couples and single women can hide from single men. 10-23 versions added a membership crown and gold-edged avatars.

This is also where it gets criticized most. One user 9-11 gave four stars: "One thing I would change is that single males would be able to send small messages… You can't start to build any type of connection without being able to message people". Another one-star review (9-14): "You can't message anyone and there's very slim amount of people on here". Someone else 10-25 wrote "HOW TO CANCEL… DON'T WANT TO BE CHARGED AGAIN". After switching to paid, the cancellation flow hadn't caught up.

To survive on the app stores, it also proactively "de-sexualized" itself: no nudity in private albums, no images in messages. One user complained: "Pic uploads that are more SFW (lingerie) won't go through" (9-21). That's the cost of lasting in the stores.

### Who it's competing with

| Product | Scale | How Primal Play differs |
|---|---|---|
| Feeld | Play 6.7M installs, US Dating top grossing #4; iOS 103k ratings | A big open-relationship platform, skews younger and urban; not exclusive to swingers |
| 3Fun | Play 3.63M installs; iOS 151k ratings | Mainly couples looking for singles, heavy paywall, many complaints about fake profiles |
| SDC | Play 775k installs; iOS 13.4k ratings | An established membership site dating back to the 1990s, strong on events and trips, dated interface |
| Pineapple Lifestyle | Not verified | Nearly identical selling points, plus party events; no built-in audience from niche creators |
| Unicorn Landing (same company) | iOS 9 ratings, Play 10k+ | The predecessor from 2022 years ago, women only; third-party aggregate rating 2.2 stars |

Reviews compare it almost entirely to SDC: "Navigation, options, and the look are much better than sdc" (9-12), "Anything is better than sdc" (9-18). The old site is hard to use, and that's the gap it can slip into.

Unicorn Landing is an important counterexample: the same creators promoted it for four years, yet iOS has only 9 ratings. Creators alone aren't enough. Primal Play's better couple-centered model and broader audience (couples plus singles, not just women) are what make it far better than its predecessor.

### If it were you

**In one line** : C. Don't copy this app. It only took off because of the founders' own identity, which you can't replicate. The category also has Feeld, 3Fun, SDC, and the nearly identical Pineapple Lifestyle. What's worth learning is the playbook: niche creators build their own vertical community, make it free where supply is scarce, and charge where demand is in surplus.

**Who it suits** : you (or your co-founder) are already someone trusted in a small community with 5–100k precise followers, the community is poorly served by big platforms, and paid acquisition is hard. Adult, religious, hobby, or professional communities all qualify.

**Who it doesn't suit** : anyone without their own audience who expects organic store traffic or SEO to carry them; anyone trying to build another "verification + couples" app inside the swinger scene (the features are easy to copy, the trust isn't); anyone who can't handle the app review and payment risks of adult apps.

**How to build it** : iOS first, free first. Photo verification, manual review, one profile with two logins for couples, a revocable private album, and a feed: that set can be built in two or three months. Make it free for the scarce side and give early users lifetime membership; for the surplus side, put them in a waitlist and make them pay before they can initiate contact, but leave them a small way to talk without paying (the biggest complaint in the reviews). Build the cancellation flow in from day one.

**How to get users** : your own content. Slip a download mention into your regular posts, and turn each milestone into something worth shouting about again: beta opening, Android launch, "last call for lifetime members", new cities opening. Ask followers to rate it, and build up the rating presence early.

**When to move** : there's no clear window. As long as the community is yours, it stays yours. But if another creator in the same community has already launched an app, the trust is taken.

**Signs you've read it wrong** : ① within a few months after Primal Play switched to paid, Play daily installs drop back to 20–30 a day and one-star reviews start dragging the rating down, meaning the creator-driven wave didn't retain users; ② it never breaks into the US Dating top grossing top 200, meaning single men won't pay for this and the monetization model can't sustain a business; ③ conversely, if it enters the US Dating top grossing chart within six months, the same playbook is worth serious effort in other small communities.

Where users come from

- **Confirmed** **Founder / creator-owned content (TikTok, Facebook Reels, Instagram, Threads)** : Professor Pineapple has 81.6k TikTok followers and posts 4–5 lifestyle advice videos a day, dropping in a "download Primal Play" plug every day or two (10-08, 11-03, etc.); The Impulsive Duo's Facebook Reel "Download Primal Play on Android and iOS Now!" got 65k views at 10-29, after which daily installs rose from about 64 to 110–140; the official site claims an audience of 100k+ and a 50k newsletter

- **Confirmed** **Asking for five-star reviews** : 08-12 The Impulsive Duo's Facebook video: "Make sure to give a five star review"; 61 of the 70 Play ratings are five stars

- **Confirmed** **Free beta plus early lifetime free membership** : 07-21 TikTok: "free for a limited time during beta testing on iOS"; 10-12 TikTok: "Last call… It will be converting… couples… get a free lifetime membership"

- Inferred **Reddit / community word of mouth** : r/Montreal_Swingers has a user asking "Does anyone use Primal Play app" (search snippet only)

- Inferred **Paid acquisition** : No related advertisers in the metaads library, and no ads landing on this package name; adult dating is restricted for ads anyway. Whether 10-29's Reel was boosted is unknown

- Inferred **Media / X / SEO** : x-radar shows 120 posts in 0 days; no review sites have picked it up; the name collides with the BDSM term "primal play"

## Why Primal Play (com.primalplay.app) gained traction

> Research date 2026-11-06. Data comes from our googleplay / appstore / metaads databases, the iTunes lookup, TikHub, and Jina / Exa search. Anything unverified is marked "unverified".

### One line

Primal Play is a private community app for the swinger / lifestyle (swinging, ENM) scene, developed by Make Boise LLC in Idaho. It admits only verified adults and couples, lets couples share one profile, and offers private photo albums, a feed, and Passport for browsing other cities. It gained traction because two lifestyle education creator accounts (Professor Pineapple and The Impulsive Duo, each with roughly 80k TikTok followers, and Facebook videos often reaching tens of thousands of views) post daily and keep telling people to download it. During the cold start it ran a free beta, then promised "couples who download now get a lifetime free membership" to fill the women and couples side of the market first, and only then charges single men. Scale is still small: 2,410 Android installs and 496 iOS ratings, far from a breakout. It is a case of "creators bring the community, and a vertical app is built around it," not an app grown through paid acquisition.

### 1. Data: scale and curve

- **Google Play** (googleplay database): 2026-07-24 listed, 11-06 with 2,410 total installs, growing 778 over 7 days; 70 ratings averaging 4.67, distributed as [1★ 4, 2★ 0, 3★ 2, 4★ 2, 5★ 61], with 87% five-star. US store Dating free chart 10-29 rank 122,11-01 rising to 83,11-06 is 90. Only charted in the US store.

- **Install curve** (AppstoreSpy estimates, app_day_ext): from 09-24 to 10-07 about 43–49 installs per day; from 10-08 to 10-21 it fell back to 23–30 per day; from 10-22 it climbed again to 53,10-29 per day, 64,10-31 to 11-03 about 110,11-04 per day, 140. Our own observations: 10-29 1,632 → 11-03 2,201 → 11-06 2,410.

- **iOS** (iTunes lookup, 11-06): 2026-06-28 launch, Lifestyle category, 496 ratings averaging 4.64; version went from 1.0 to 1.1.18 (10-23), about 20 releases in four months. The appstore database shows it never charted (only one observation, at 11-06, with rating_count=496). **iOS is the main front** : rating count is roughly 7 times Android's, consistent with a middle-aged US lifestyle audience skewing to iPhone (inferred).

- **Monetization** : Play in-app purchases $7.99–$59.99 (googleplay database, iap_range). The FAQ states that single men join a waitlist, cannot send a first message without membership, and with membership can only send "message requests"; the 10-23 1.1.18 adds a Premium crown and gold-border avatars.

### 2. Competitors

| Product | Where | Launched | Scale | How Primal Play differs |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Feeld | iOS / Android | 2014 | 6.7M Play installs; #4 on the US store Dating Top Grossing chart; 103k iOS US-store ratings (googleplay / appstore databases) | Aimed at a broader open-relationship and curious audience; younger and more urban; no couple dual accounts or human review specific to swingers |
| 3Fun | iOS / Android | 2016 | 3.63M Play installs; 151k iOS US-store ratings; #17 on Brazil's Dating Top Grossing chart | 3P / Couples seeking single women, heavy paywall, lots of fake-profile complaints |
| SDC(SDC Lifestyle / SDC Adult Dating) | Web + iOS / Android | Website 1990s, app 2016 | Play 775k installs; iOS US store 13.4k ratings | Long-running paid membership site, strong on events and vacations; dated interface, and you must pay to chat |
| Kasidie, SLS (SwingLifestyle) | Mostly web | 2000s | Not verified | Long-running website with an events calendar; weak on mobile |
| SwingHub | Android / iOS | 2023 | Play 80k installs, UK Dating top grossing #30 | Mainly UK, open-relationship social |
| FabSwingers | Android / web | Old site | Play 49k installs, #19 on the UK Dating free chart | Free UK site |
| Easy3P, HMU and other 3P / FWB apps | Android | 2019–2023 | 13–330k installs | Ad-driven general dating app, no verified community |
| helloPOLY | Android / iOS | 2016 | Play 109k installs | Polyamory, not swinging |
| Pineapple Lifestyle(thepineapple.app) | iOS / Android | Not verified | Not verified | Positioning is nearly identical: human verification of every member, linked couple profiles, feeds, events, free with in-app purchases. Adds events and parties. The official site published a "best swinger app" SEO article 10-08 |
| Unicorn Landing (same developer) | iOS / Android | 2022-04/06 | iOS 9 ratings; Play 10K+; officially about 500 members (bestpolydating.com) | Women-only swinger app from the same company, mediocre (datingappreport aggregates 135 reviews averaging 2.2) |
| Pineapple Social (same developer) | iOS / Android | 2026-02-14 | 6 iOS ratings | A lifestyle events / club finder app from the same company |

Conclusion: **the category was validated long ago and has no shortage of veteran players** . Feeld and 3Fun hold most of the market, and SDC is the veteran website. Primal Play is not the first to offer "verification plus couples"; Pineapple Lifestyle's selling points are almost word for word the same. What sets it apart is not the features but **who is promoting it** .

### 3. Where users come from

#### 3.1 Founder / creator-owned content (confirmed, main channel)

- **Professor Pineapple** (TikTok @theprofessorpineapple1.0): 81.6k followers, 3,438 posts, 764k total likes (TikHub). Lately he posts 4–5 lifestyle advice short videos a day, typically 300–3,500 views each, and every day or two drops a "download Primal Play" plug: 11-03 "If you want to have success on a lifestyle app, make sure to download primal play", 10-08 "your sign to sign up for primal play", 07-21 "It's free for a limited time during beta testing on iOS" (5,270 views). He also promotes the same company's Unicorn Landing (11-06 "your sign to download unicorn landing").

- **The Impulsive Duo** (TikTok @theimpulsiveduo, 77.6k followers, 614k likes; Facebook page listed as "public figure / entrepreneur"): Facebook Reels often get 1–150k views. 08-12's video "Here is your sign to download Primal Play for free! Make sure to give a five star review" got 7.1K views; **10-29's "Download Primal Play on Android and iOS Now!" got 65k views** , and Play daily installs then rose from about 64 to 110–140 per day (10-31 to 11-04). The timing lines up, but it can't be ruled out that this Reel was paid for.

- The two accounts are very likely run by the same people: TikTok has a "Mr Impulsive Professor Pineapple" hashtag page, and the official site describes the two as co-founders (primalplay.app: "Professor Pineapple and The Impulsive Duo bring a 100,000+ person audience", "50,000+ newsletter readers"). Their equity relationship with Make Boise LLC is **unverified** , but both are promoting all three of Make Boise's apps.

#### 3.2 Asking for reviews (confirmed)

In 08-12, The Impulsive Duo's video explicitly asks viewers to "give a five star review." On Play, 87% of ratings are five-star, 2★ overall, and the iOS average is 4.64 (0), consistent with that call to action. It is a legitimate tactic, and it set up the new app's rating facade early.

#### 3.3 Free beta → "lifetime free membership" → conversion to paid (confirmed)

10-12 Professor Pineapple: "Last call for primal play… It will be converting so any couples this is your sign to download or redownload so you get a free lifetime membership" (TikHub). The play: use a free beta and loyal followers to pull in couples (the scarcest side of a dating platform), give early couples lifetime free membership, then charge mainly single men for membership after conversion (waitlist plus paying to message first, per the FAQ).

#### 3.4 Community word of mouth / discussion (weak)

On Reddit r/Montreal_Swingers, a user asked "Does anyone use Primal Play app to meet people?" (search snippet; the page 403 body was not read). A Facebook video page under an SDC banner also promoted Primal Play (search snippet, unverified).

#### 3.5 Paid acquisition (no evidence)

The metaads database has no advertisers for Primal Play, The Impulsive Duo, or Professor Pineapple, and no ads landing on this package name or iOS id. But that database only tracks advertisers surfaced by keyword first-page searches, so **not finding it does not mean it wasn't bought** . Adult dating is restricted on Meta and Google, so paid acquisition would be hard in any case.

#### 3.6 Media / X / SEO (none)

x-radar searches for “primal play app”, “primalplay” and “professor pineapple” have returned 120 posts each day over the past 0 days. No media coverage. Several third-party “best swinger apps” review sites (jointheswing, aseeksb, spiceradar and others) don't list it. The name “Primal Play” collides with the BDSM term “primal play”, so search results are buried under kink explainers, and SEO is an uphill fight from day one.

### 4. Why it took off

1. **It comes with an audience that already trusts them** : the two accounts total about 160k TikTok followers, plus a Facebook following, and the official site claims 100k+ reach and a 50k newsletter. The biggest pain point in the lifestyle scene is fake profiles and unsafe meetups, so an app built by familiar faces from inside the scene starts with built-in credibility.

2. **High-frequency, low-cost repetition** : each day's 4–5 posts include a download call-to-action. Individual views aren't high, but it has run for four months with a precise audience. The 10-29 Reel with 65k views lines up in time with the early-November rise in daily installs.

3. **Cold start solves the “women / couples” side first** : single men join a waitlist and pay to message first, while couples and single women can hide from single men, and early couples get lifetime free access. The two-sided market balance is built into the product and pricing.

4. **Features target the scene's long-standing problems** : manually reviewed hand-over-heart selfie verification, one profile with two logins for couples, private photo albums, Passport for browsing other locations, and a feed. There's no swipe matching, and anyone can message directly (except single men). On SDC or 3Fun, these are either missing or poorly done.

5. **Fast iteration** : about 20 iOS versions in four months. Early users reported bugs in reviews (iPad crashes), and the founder publicly said “let's fix the bugs together” (iOS review by _vinnyvinvin, 9-05), turning fans into participants.

### 5. Differentiation

- On product alone, the “verification + shared couples profile + private albums + feed” combo isn't unique. Pineapple Lifestyle is almost identical, and SDC and Feeld each have part of it. What's unusual are the restrictions: private albums don't allow nudity, and images can't be sent in messages (iOS review by MyGypsyGirl, 8-15). These limits exist to pass Apple and Google review.

- The real differentiator is that **the founder is already a top educator-influencer in this scene** . Distribution, trust endorsement, and supply-demand balance (pulling in couples first) all rest on that identity. **That's why it took off** , not the features themselves.

- Counterevidence: Unicorn Landing, from the same company and pushed by the same creators four years ago, has only 9 iOS ratings with a 2.2 average after 2022 years. Star power alone isn't enough. Primal Play's better product polish (the verification flow and the couples model) and a wider target audience (couples plus singles, not only women) are why it's far better than its predecessor.

### 6. How visible it is

**Still very few people know about it.** Revenue isn't disclosed, there's no media coverage, X has 0 discussions, third-party review sites don't index it, and it circulates only among the founders' own TikTok and Facebook audiences, with occasional Reddit questions. It's also small (2.4K on Android, about 500 ratings on iOS).

### 7. Copycats

I found no clear evidence of anyone copying Primal Play. Pineapple Lifestyle's positioning overlaps heavily, but its launch date is unverified, so it's impossible to tell who copied whom. Make Boise is building a portfolio itself (Unicorn Landing for women, Pineapple Social for events, Primal Play as the all-in-one community).

### 8. What others can learn

- **Niche creators building vertical apps themselves** : creators with 5–100k precise, high-trust audiences connect “advice content” with “go practice it in the app”, dropping a download mention into their everyday posts, with acquisition costs close to 0. Communities that big platforms serve poorly and that paid acquisition restricts (adult, religious, specific hobbies, specific professions) are the best fit.

- **Two-sided cold start** : the scarce side (couples / women) gets free access, with lifetime membership early on; the abundant side (single men) joins a waitlist and pays, while control over who can see you is handed to the scarce side.

- **Free iOS beta first, then Android, then paid** . Each step is an “event” that gives creators a reason to promote again (beta, Android launch, last call, new features).

- **Proactively de-sexualizing to pass store review** (automatic nudity detection, no images in messages) in exchange for lasting survival on app stores.

### 9. Uncertain

- The exact relationship between Professor Pineapple / The Impulsive Duo and Make Boise LLC (inferred to be the founding couple, unverified).

- Whether the 65k-view Facebook Reel 10-29 got paid boosting, and whether there's ad spend on Meta or Google.

- Paid conversion and real revenue: it hasn't charted on either iOS or Play's top grossing lists, so revenue is likely very small. How many lifetime free memberships were issued is also unknown.

- iOS downloads and retention (Apple doesn't disclose these; 496 ratings can't be simply converted into downloads when reviews are solicited).
