1.47 stars, 420k installs: how a short-drama app makes money by being impossible to uninstall, and grabs someone else's name along the way
What it is A free Android app for vertical short dramas. No payment, and it opens straight into ads.
Why it took off Behind it, one operator used a borrowed Vietnamese company developer account to publish dozens of identical builds at once, buying installs in waves. Then they squeezed each user's ad revenue with full-screen ads and home-screen hijacking that makes the app hard to remove. They may also have picked up search traffic from the genuine PulseDrama brand on TikTok.
DShould you follow it? No. There are only two things worth learning: a small-language category chart (like Italy's entertainment chart) can be cracked with tens of thousands of installs a week, and the budget method of "put a little into every build, scale up whatever proves profitable."

PulseDrama - Drama Shorts is a free Android app on Google Play for vertical short dramas. It launched in Aug 29, had 426k installs by Nov 6, and at one point reached #25 on the Italy entertainment free chart. Its rating is only 1.47 stars. Its success has nothing to do with the product: it's one of several dozen short-drama shells that a group in Vietnam published on the same day, buying users with ads, then squeezing ad revenue out of each of them with full-screen ads and "installs you can't remove." It also uses a name on Play that belongs to a legitimate Chinese short-drama brand. Below: how this machine works, where the money comes from, and why I wouldn't recommend copying it.
A review 6 people marked helpful
In Sep 13 2026, a US user gave it 1 stars on Google Play:
"It literally changed my entire phone just by being installed. It became the launcher, and I couldn't even find the app to switch my phone back to normal."
This review got 6 "helpful" votes. Four days later another one read: "It is forced to capture your home screen and there is an add on every single click," which got 9 helpful votes. By Nov 1, the Italian-store reviews said the same thing: "una volta installata … non si disinstallava e bloccato tutto" (once installed it wouldn't uninstall and everything got stuck).
Of 151 ratings, 133 are 1 stars and 17 are 5 stars, with none from 2 to 4 stars (Google Play, 11-06). The middle is empty, so those 17 5-star ratings are probably fake (inference).
What it looks like
The store copy uses standard short-drama language: "quick, addictive dramas," CEO romance, werewolves, mystery, revenge, a few minutes per episode, full-screen vertical, multilingual subtitles. Google Play labels it "Contains ads," with no in-app purchases and no charge.
What users see after opening it is something else. The most helpful US review (10 helpful votes, 09-12): "When you open the app, 4 ads will come out. Then the video they promoted, you can't see it on their app." It shows 4 ads before you even pick a language, and the drama from the ad isn't in the app. Another review put it more bluntly: "more ads than dramas."
So the product is really just an ad container. The dramas are bait, and the desktop hijacking keeps you around for a few more days and a few more interstitials.
How the installs come in: in waves, like a switch
Daily installs (AppstoreSpy estimates; a single day is averaged across two observations):
| Timeline | What happened |
|---|---|
| 09-16 ~ 09-24 | 7k to 13k a day, up from 9k to 95k |
| 09-25 ~ 10-03 | almost flat, a few hundred a day |
| 10-04 | +43k in one day |
| 10-12 ~ 10-14 | about +98k over three days, reaching 297k |
| 10-15 ~ 10-20 | flat again |
| 10-21 ~ 10-27 | 5 thousand to 14k per day |
| 10-30 to date | 2k to 10k a day, slowing; +49.7k over the last 7 days |
The stepped pattern of surge, then stall, is typical of paid acquisition: spend switches on and installs rise, switch off and they stop (inference). Apps that grow through word of mouth see their ratings climb along with installs; this one has 420k installs and only 151 ratings.
No landing-page ads for this specific package turned up in the public ad libraries of Meta, TikTok or Google, and I couldn't verify where or how much it spent. But its sibling packages spent heavily on Meta (see next section), and the reviews complaining that "the drama in the ad isn't in the app" suggest users came in from ad clips.
Who's behind it: 35 shells on the same template
PulseDrama's developer is listed as VINH SON INVESTMENT JOINT STOCK COMPANY, a Vietnamese investment firm. The website sits on free netlify hosting (pulsedrama-dramashorts.netlify.app), and the contact is a personal Gmail with a name that looks Nigerian, which doesn't match a Vietnamese company. The site's images live in a folder called apptest-v19-pulsedrama, and the same path holds v22 DramaGo, v28 LumaReel, v29 MystReel, v30 TidalDrama and v40 WaveDrama. This is an operator mass-producing numbered apps, and PulseDrama is number 19.
Using the same template (package name pattern, netlify website, Gmail contact, a Vietnamese non-IT company as developer), I found 35 short-drama packages on Google Play with about 14.6M installs combined. 29 of them launched on Aug 29 or 31. The bigger ones are DramaGo (1.28M), FlareReel (1.11M), ReelSaga (1.06M), AuraReel (768k) and LumaReel (627k). In Oct 7 another batch came out with Spanish-sounding names like Duvela, Tramoya and Kindrama.
The developer names are all over the place: CPC1 Pharmaceutical Central, Nishihara Coffee, Victory Textile, Vietnam-Japan Construction… all construction, pharma, textile or coffee companies. The likely explanation is borrowed or bought enterprise developer accounts. Enterprise accounts skip Google's closed-testing requirement for individual developers, and banning one doesn't take down the others (inference). The VINH SON account also lists "Celestia: Love Test," an empty shell with single-digit installs.
Paid ads from sibling packages on Meta (early November): RioReel 68 ads, LumaReel 42 ads, and AuraReel's page ran 1,197 ads (11-06). On Nov 6, 200 of the top 14 on the Italian entertainment free chart were this group's packages, 33 in Hong Kong and 6 in Thailand. PulseDrama ranked #38 in Italy, among the highest of the group.
The name belongs to someone else
The real PulseDrama is a legitimate short-drama brand run by Shenzhen Manbin Culture & Media. Its website pulsedrama.com hosts licensed vertical dramas, its iOS app launched in Sep 14 (Thai description), and it runs a set of TikTok accounts: @pulsedrama_ca with 138k followers, @pulsedrama_id with 116k, @pulsedrama_br with 24k, with a top single video reaching 1.18M views (episode 10 of "My Giant Warrior Queen"). It was posting dramas on TikTok in early August, before this Vietnamese shell launched.
Its Android version com.pulsedrama.app sat on the store for 7 months with only about 1,800 installs, then got pulled in 2026 June. So right now, someone who sees a PulseDrama show on TikTok and searches the name on Google Play lands on this Vietnamese shell. It also charts in Asian stores like Hong Kong and Thailand.
Whether that explains why it ranks above its 35 siblings can't be verified from outside, since we don't have search-term data. The simpler explanation is that it just got more budget. Whether the name was borrowed on purpose or by accident, we don't know.
Where the money comes from
It's ads only. The math is simple: the cost of one install has to be less than the ad revenue earned from that user before they uninstall. Pop-ups 4 at a time, a tap that opens another ad, and forcing itself as the home screen so the user can't find the uninstall button all exist to squeeze maximum ad impressions out of each user. The same shell is copied dozens of times, budget goes to whichever package pencils out, and losing one to a ban doesn't hurt the whole operation. Sibling packs have dozens to thousands of live ads on Meta, which suggests the math is probably positive right now (inference; we don't know the cost-per-install or ad rates).
It never charted on any top-grossing list, which makes sense: it doesn't sell anything.
Who it's competing with
| Competitors | Scale (Google Play installs, 11-06) | How it differs |
|---|---|---|
| ReelShort | 307M, +5.51M in 7 days | Original in-house content, coins and subscriptions |
| DramaBox | 307M | Licensed drama library behind a paywall |
| FreeReels / DramaWave (Kunlun) | 246M / 152M | Big players already run licensed short dramas with free-plus-ads models. Ranked #1 and #4 on Italy's entertainment chart. |
| NetShort | 162M | Licensed, #2 in Italy |
| PineDrama(TikTok) | 84M, +3M in 7 days | Platforms making their own free short dramas |
| DramaMask | 928k | A different shell team running the same playbook |
| Its 34 siblings | ~14M combined | Same template, same operator |
Free short-drama streaming is something the big platforms already do, with licensed libraries. This app has no product difference. It only works through volume, paid acquisition, and ad arbitrage, and maybe a little borrowed name recognition.
This playbook is no secret in Vietnam either: VnExpress reported in Oct 2026 20 on short-drama apps using "easy money" lures to drive installs, stuffing in ads and malware.
If it were you
Bottom line: Understand how this network operates, but don't copy it.
Who it fits: Teams that already have a stack of enterprise developer accounts, a media-buying crew, and a habit of "launching 30 packages, killing 25." For them this isn't new.
Who it doesn't fit: Indie devs and small teams. You'd be missing the three things it runs on: a pile of developer accounts that can get banned, daily-adjustable paid budgets, and the nerve to accept takedowns. And the core tactics that make this app pay (forcing itself as the home screen, ads on every tap) already violate Google Play policy. Building it is waiting for a ban.
If you want to learn from it, learn this:
- Category charts in smaller-language markets set a low bar: roughly 50k installs a week on Italy's entertainment free chart gets you into the top 40. For a legitimate tool or content app, you can use that number to size a paid acquisition budget.
- The allocation method "put a little spend on every package, add money to the ones that pay back" applies to any paid-acquisition app.
- Look on Play for brands that have buzz on TikTok but no Android app. That signals unmet search demand. But grabbing someone else's brand name is trademark infringement. Don't.
When is "too early": Forget the window. How long shells like this last depends on when Google cleans them up, not on the market.
What would show you're wrong: If these packages stay widely listed past six months and installs keep climbing, Google tolerates this behavior more than expected, and the risk of the ad-shell network needs re-estimating. If the official PulseDrama relaunches on Android and this shell's installs drop with it, the name effect is real and is its main source of traffic.

The library holds 35 packages on the same template, 29 of them live on 08-29 or 08-31. Developers are construction, pharma, textile, and coffee companies (googleplay library).
- Inferred paid acquisition (most likely Meta): installs come in step pulses (10-04 single day +43k, 10-12 to 10-14 three days +98k, with almost nothing in the days between 0); reviews say "you advertise one move and never bring it in"; sibling packages are confirmed running on Meta (RioReel 68 ads, LumaWorld 42 ads, AuraReel 1,197 ads active); this package shows up in none of the Meta, TikTok, or Google ad libraries.
- Inferred Borrowing the licensed PulseDrama brand's name and search traffic: Shenzhen Manbin's PulseDrama has over 280k followers on TikTok (posting episodes since early August). The iOS version is live on 2026-09; the Android version 2026-06 has been pulled. Searching PulseDrama on Play now returns only this shell. The Hong Kong and Thailand charts it appears on are also Asian markets where Manbin is active.
- Confirmed Small-country category chart exposure: roughly 50k installs a week on Italy's entertainment free chart gets you into the #25 to #38 range. 11-06 other packages from the same network have 14 spots on the Italy chart.
- Inferred Aggressive retention and monetization tactics: several reviews say it forces itself as the default home screen, can't be found in the app list, and pops 4 ads on open (9, 10, and 6 people marked those reviews helpful). Not verified by unpacking the APK.
- Inferred X / creators / press: x-radar shows 60 posts in 0 days. The accounts on TikTok using the name PulseDrama are all Manbin's. No press coverage.
Why PulseDrama - Drama Shorts (com.pulsedrama.dramashorts.app) is charting
Channel: Google Play | Developer: VINH SON INVESTMENT JOINT STOCK COMPANY | Store launch 2026-08-29 | Research date 2026-11-06
Bottom line
It isn't charting on the product. (1.47 ratings, 133 on 1-star against 17 on 5-star, with no ratings in between.) It's one account in a Vietnamese short-drama shell network: about 35 packages on the same template went live at the end of August using borrowed Vietnamese company developer accounts, all free and monetized only through ads. Installs come in bursts, which looks like paid acquisition. What sets it apart from its siblings is that it holds the "PulseDrama" name on Google Play. That name belongs to a licensed Chinese short-drama brand with over 200k followers on TikTok, which itself has no Android app listed. The name-borrowing effect is not yet confirmed.

| 09-16 ~ 09-24 | First wave: about 7k → 13k per day, rising to 94,913 |

The on-off step shape is typical of paid acquisition: installs rise when budget is on and stop when it's off. Organic word-of-mouth growth looks different, because apps that grow that way see their ratings climb too, and this one has only 151 ratings, nearly all 1-star.
2. Who it is: one account in a Vietnamese netlify short-drama network
- The developer website is
pulsedrama-dramashorts.netlify.app, and the privacy policy is hosted on the same netlify domain. The contact email is a personal gmail,[email protected], with a name that looks Nigerian, which doesn't match the Vietnamese company name (googleplay libraryapp). - Website images are hosted at
webapps-assets.pages.dev/apptest-v19-pulsedrama/. Sibling packages are numbered in the same path: DramaGo is v22, LumaReel is v28, MystReel is v29, TidalDrama is v30, WaveDrama is v40 (see the reports for those packages in the same directory). So this is one operator working through numbered builds, and v19 is one of the earlier numbers we've seen. - The Google Play library has 35 short-drama packages from the same template (package names
com.<brand>.<two words>.app, websites<brand>-<word>.netlify.app, Gmail addresses, Vietnamese non-IT developers) with about 14.6M installs in total, 29 of them live in 08-29 or 08-31. Examples: AuraReel (768k), LumaReel (627k), FlickReel (418k), ReelSaga (1.06M), DramaGo (1.28M), FlareReel (1.11M). 10-07 also launched a batch of packages with Spanish-style names, like Duvela, Tramoya, and Kindrama. - The developer names vary widely: VINH SON INVESTMENT, CENTRAL PHARMACEUTICAL CPC1, HUONG TAY NGUYEN COFFEE, THANG LOI TEXTILE, VIET NHAT GROUP CONSTRUCTION… All construction, pharma, textile, or coffee companies. The reasonable inference is that these are borrowed or purchased enterprise developer accounts, which sidestep Google's testing requirements for individual developers and spread out ban risk. The VINH SON account also holds shell apps such as Celestia: Love Test (5+ installs) and SiteVora (AppBrain, Google Play developer page).
- 11-06 In Italy's entertainment free chart top 200, 14 packages from this network appear, with PulseDrama at #38, the highest of them (the same-template Duvela ranked #30, under a different package name, which my filter didn't catch at the time). Hong Kong: 33 entries; Thailand: 6 entries (googleplay
chart_rank).
3. Why users come: growth tactics
3.1 paid acquisition (most likely Meta), though this package itself has no direct evidence
- None of our Meta, TikTok or Google ad libraries show an ad landing on
com.pulsedrama.dramashorts.app. But these libraries only track products on their watchlist, so not finding it doesn't mean it wasn't advertised. - Sister packages from the same matrix are confirmed running heavily on Meta (metaads
app_link): RioReel 68 ads, Westbridge Studio (EmberDrama and DriftReel) 52 ads, Mini Drama (BingeVibe and Dramavo) 56 ads, LumaWorld (LumaReel) 42 ads, AuraReel 32 ads. AuraReel's Page ad count went from 11-06 to 1,197 (see the AuraReel report). - User reviews complain that the landing page doesn't match the ad, which suggests people tapped in from a drama clip in the ad: "you advertise one move and never bring it in"; "the video they promoted, you can't see it on their app" (10 people found it helpful). These are US Play Store reviews, scraped 11-06.
- Its first wave (09-16 to 09-24) starts 3 weeks earlier than the earliest Meta ad dates we saw for its sister packages (10-14 to 10-17). It may have started buying earlier, or it may have used other channels (Google UAC or similar). Not verified.
3.2 may be riding the "PulseDrama" brand name (inferred, not confirmed)
- There is a real PulseDrama brand, operated by Shenzhen Manbin Culture Media:
- iOS app "PulseDrama" (id 6803323652, bundle
com.pulsedrama.manbin.www, listed 2026-09-14, Thai description, via iTunes lookup); its terms page is on web.mbdrama.com. - The website pulsedrama.com hosts genuine vertical short dramas, with single series marked as "recommended" at 10-20 million views; its asset CDN is
os.provideoshrot.com. The data card's claim that "the official site pulsedrama.com uses provideoshrot" is wrong: this Play package's official site is on netlify and has nothing to do with pulsedrama.com. - TikTok account matrix (TikHub): @pulsedrama_ca 138k followers, 980 videos; @pulsedrama_id 116k followers, 509 videos; @pulsedrama_br 24k followers; plus _mx_02 and _ca_02. Top single-video views reach 1.18M (My Giant Warrior Queen EP10). Video titles include "20260807", showing the content was already being pushed in early August, before this Play package was listed (08-29).
- Its Android version
com.pulsedrama.appwas listed for 7 months before being delisted 2026-06, with only about 1,800 installs (AppBrain).
- iOS app "PulseDrama" (id 6803323652, bundle
- In other words, people drawn to PulseDrama dramas on TikTok who go to Google Play and search the name now land on this Vietnamese shell. It also charts in Asian storefronts like Hong Kong and Thailand, and Manbin's iOS version has a Thai description. This may be one reason it ranks so high in the matrix. But we can't access store search-term data, so whether the name was deliberately borrowed can't be confirmed.
3.3 store category charts
- The Italian Entertainment Top Free chart is an easy bar: roughly 50k installs a week gets you into the top 40 (11-06 at #38). Ahead of it are the local versions of big platforms like FreeReels, NetShort, ReelShort, DramaWave and DramaBox. Chart placement also feeds back some organic downloads.
3.4 retention and monetization tactics (from reviews, package not unpacked)
- Users say it forces itself as the default home screen (launcher) and can't be found or uninstalled from the app list: "It became the launcher, and I couldn't even find the app" (6 people found it helpful); "forced to capture your home screen and there is an add on every single click" (9 people found it helpful). Italian reviews also say "una volta installata … non si disinstallava e bloccato tutto" (once installed it wouldn't uninstall and everything got stuck).
- It shows 4 ads on launch, and you have to sit through an ad before choosing a language. The structure is built to squeeze as many interstitial impressions as possible before the user uninstalls.
3.5 ruled-out channels
- X: x-radar found 0 posts mentioning "PulseDrama" in the last 60 days.
- Media and reviews: the web only has auto-generated pages from AppBrain, Similarweb, Apptopia and APKPure.
- Creators: the TikTok accounts called PulseDrama belong to Manbin, not to this shell.
4. Competitors
| Product | Where | Launched | Scale (googleplay library 11-06) | How it differs from PulseDrama |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| ReelShort | Android / iOS | 2022-08 | 307M installs, +5.51M in 7 days | Genuine original content, monetized through coins and subscriptions; PulseDrama sells nothing and relies only on ads |
| DramaBox | Android / iOS | 2023-04 | 307M | Licensed drama library behind a paywall |
| FreeReels / DramaWave (Kunlun) | Android | 2024-11 / 2024-09 | 246M / 152M | Big players already run free-with-ads licensed short drama; #1 and #4 on the Italian Entertainment chart |
| NetShort | Android | 2024-07 | 162M | Licensed, #2 in Italy |
| PineDrama(TikTok) | Big-company features | 2025-12 | 84M, +3M in 7 days | Platform operator making free short dramas itself |
| PulseDrama (Shenzhen Manbin, genuine same-name brand) | iOS / web / TikTok | iOS 2026-09; Android 2026-06 delisted | Over 280k TikTok followers in total | Genuine content, a real brand; this shell occupies the name on Play |
| Sister packages AuraReel / LumaReel / FlickReel etc. | Android | 2026-08-29/31 | 768k / 627k / 418k | Same template, same operator; only differing in ad budget allocation and which storefronts they target |
| DramaMask(arcane-global) | Android | 2026-09 | 928k | A different github.io shell team, same playbook |
5. Differentiation
- Against the genuine platforms: its only difference is "all free, no coin purchases", but FreeReels, DramaWave and PineDrama have been free for a while and have real libraries. That isn't unique to it.
- Against its sister packages: the template, pages and descriptions are nearly identical. Its one difference is that the name collides with a brand that has buzz on TikTok, while that brand has no app listed on Play. If borrowing the name works, that's the "edge" that lets it rank first in the matrix in Italy. But this is unconfirmed; the more direct explanation is that the team has recently put its budget behind it.
- Bottom line: there is no product-level differentiation. It gets traction from matrix volume, paid acquisition and monetization arbitrage, plus a possible name premium.
6. Visibility and copycats
- Visibility: Almost nobody knows about this yet. No media outlet has covered this package, there are 0 posts about it on X, and no one has publicly disclosed revenue. But the pattern of "short-drama wrapper apps that trick users into installs and push ads" has already been reported by Vietnamese media: VnExpress 2026-10-20, "Short-drama apps lure millions with promises of easy cash, deliver ads and malware instead" (https://e.vnexpress.net/news/tech/tech-news/short-drama-apps-lure-millions-with-promises-of-easy-cash-deliver-ads-and-malware-instead-5131544.html). In Vietnamese indie dev circles, this playbook is out in the open.
- Copycats: it is itself a copycat. The same operator's template library has 35 packages, and 10-07 is still releasing new Spanish-language batches; outside, the same playbook is used by shells like DramaMask, Halo Reels, ShortFly and Drama World.
7. Where the money comes from
No in-app purchases; the only revenue is ads (ad_supported). The model is a cost per install (CPI) below the ad revenue a user generates before uninstalling: interstitials on launch, an ad on every tap, and setting itself as the home screen so users can't easily remove it, maximizing ad impressions per user. The same shell is copied dozens of times, scaling up whichever package has positive ROI, and losing one to a ban doesn't hurt the whole operation. Sister packages have dozens to over a thousand live ads on Meta, suggesting the math likely works right now (inferred, not verified).
8. What to borrow
- Find a category where a big platform has already educated demand but the paywall frustrates users, and build a free-with-ads shell. Batch-publish under several enterprise developer accounts, templatize the websites and assets, manage versions with numbering like v19, v22…, put a small budget behind every package, and add budget only to the ones that show positive ROI.
- Target small-language, low-barrier category charts (Italian, Hong Kong, Spanish-speaking Entertainment charts); tens of thousands of installs a week is enough to chart.
- Look on Play for brand names that have buzz on TikTok but no app listed on Android. This is a gray-area windfall with trademark and policy risk.
- Cost: 1.5 stars. Hijacking the home screen violates Play policy; delisting and account bans are a matter of when, not if. You can't build a long-term brand this way.
9. Still unclear
- Which channel this package actually ran on and how much it spent (none of the three ad libraries found it), and where the first wave 09-16 to 09-24 came from.
- Whether borrowing the "PulseDrama" name was deliberate or a coincidence, and how much search traffic it brings.
- Whether the content is licensed, AI-generated or pirated.
- The "forced default home screen" behavior hasn't been verified by unpacking the app; it rests on user reviews alone.
- Whether the 17 5-star reviews are fake: the distribution only has 1-star and 5-star reviews, with 0 in the middle, which is suspicious.
- CPI and eCPM are both unknown, so whether this business actually makes money is also uncertain.
