"Don't tell anyone": a sports-score app got 80k installs in under a month, and users were really there to watch the NFL for free
What it is On the surface it is a score app for NFL, NBA, MLB, NHL and college football. Its real function is a button on every game that opens a free pirated live stream, monetized with ads.
Why it took off The predecessor, Dofu Live, was pulled in early October. The same developer relaunched under a new name immediately, just as the US big four leagues and college football were all in season, and long-time Dofu users moved over directly.
EHow you could follow Don't copy a piracy wrapper. The demand is real, and the legal play is a lookup of "where this game airs, cheapest option, how to get a free trial" plus score alerts, acquired seasonally through fan communities, earning streaming-service affiliate commissions.

Versy Live is listed on Google Play as "US sports scores." It launched in Oct 10 and reached 83k installs by Nov 6, peaking at #11 on the US sports free chart. But almost no reviews mention scores; people talk about "watching the game" and "Dofu." It is in fact an old pirated-streaming app under a new name, relisted using the package name of a puzzle game. This piece explains how it got going, why you can't get its volume, and what is worth learning from it.
A five-star review
Oct 17, a US user left a five-star review on the Versy Live store page. The whole review: "Best sports streaming app out there. But please don't tell anyone."
The first week's reviews mostly sound like that. "Finally, a place to watch Football without local blackouts and streaming fees" (10-12); "Some of us cannot afford the prices for the sports app" (10-18); and one review marked helpful by 26 people: "A thousand times better than a few years ago" (10-12).
It's a "score app" and users thank it for letting them "see every game." The score is not what they're buying.
What it actually is
The store listing is restrained: live scores, a schedule by day, NFL, NBA, MLB, NHL and college football, no sign-up. It mentions live video in one line: "When a live feed is available, the built-in player handles playback."
The official site, versylive.com, has "WATCH LIVE" as its biggest button, with a direct APK download next to it and a Downloader code for installing on Fire TV. Inside the app, every game offers several "servers." Tap one and you get a live stream of the game with no rights behind it.
Its package name is com.puzzle.escape.labg.save, which looks like a puzzle escape-room game. The developer account is ScorePulse. On Aug 9 that account published "Dofu Live NFL NCAA MLB NHL NBA," which got about 75k installs, lasted 56 days in the store, and was pulled in early October (AppBrain, AppGoblin). The two apps use the same store copy, down to the same "No account" phrasing.
Dofu (also DofuStream, Dofu Sports) is a free sports-streaming brand that US cord-cutters have used for years. Its iOS and Play listings were repeatedly pulled, and it kept coming back under new names. A Facebook Q&A page says outright: "Versy Live is the new name for Dofu." Users say it plainly too:
"I've used this app for years (it used to be Dofu Sports), and it gets better every year." (10-14, five stars) "Just updated dofu to versy live, it's okay so far." (10-19, four stars) "Dofu was great… now I'm forced to switch to 'Versy Live,' and no server lasts two minutes." (10-18, one star)
The curve: catching the people who had nowhere to go

Before 10-29 the figures are AppstoreSpy estimates, after that they are Google Play installs. 11-06 It has 2,163 ratings and a 4.71 average. The ratio of ratings to installs is about 2.6%, while most utility apps sit below 1%. 11-03 alone added 149 ratings in one day. Some of this is from in-app prompts asking for a good review, and some may be bought, but outsiders can't tell which.
The timing was almost exact. October is the busiest month in US sports: the NFL is in weeks 6 to 9, college football is mid-season, the NBA and NHL have just started, and MLB is in the playoffs and World Series. Just then the predecessor was pulled, and many long-time users suddenly couldn't open their app. One review says they came over because "tvapp shut down and I had nowhere to watch the game" (10-13). Demand jumped while the places to get it shrank.
Where users come from
Long-time users moving over is the main channel. Phrases like "used to be Dofu," "better than the old one," and "forced to switch to Versy" keep recurring. More than ten of the 80 most relevant US reviews name Dofu. Lines like "just updated dofu to versy live" and "now I'm forced to switch" suggest the old app pushed an update or a migration prompt (inference). Dofu's streams, its Facebook groups, and word-of-mouth users were all still there, and they followed the new name.
Store search and charts. Some people found it by searching "dofu" on Play. After it climbed into the top 40 of the US sports chart, the chart itself brought in more organic traffic.
Word of mouth in communities. On r/eagles, someone wrote "I use versy live on my phone and cast it to the TV," and the poster replied "Never heard of this?" (mid-October).
TikTok, X, and press: almost nothing. Searching "versy live" turns up no related content on TikTok or X, and no coverage. Its growth happened entirely out of sight, which is why users say "don't tell anyone."
Where the money comes from
Ads only, no in-app purchases. Reviews describe the monetization in detail: you watch a long run of ads before you can pick a server; switching servers means watching them again, "ads lock you out for two minutes"; a huge TikTok icon covers the screen and nudges you to install it; some say it "requires downloading their authenticator app to continue." So beyond display ads, it also seems to be paid for installs of other apps (inference).
An NFL game runs over three hours, and one person can watch several in a weekend. That means far more ad impressions than a typical utility app gets. A third party estimated the predecessor's monthly revenue at under $10k (AppGoblin), and that figure very likely understates the ad volume from long viewing sessions.
Nearly all the bad reviews focus on the same things: ads are too long, servers cut off after two minutes, buffering, and no casting. Users put up with it because the paid alternatives cost money.

Notably, a whole crowd of Dofu-named impostor apps has appeared: from late 2025 through October 2026, at least six or seven teams listed on Play under the Dofu name, and most got only a few hundred to about ten thousand installs. Anyone can copy a name. What can't be copied is the long-time users and the working streams. Versy Live doesn't even use the word "Dofu" and still grew fast, because users recognized it.
ScorePulse also has more than one app: the same "Versy Live" copy sits under another developer account, VAPEMIST LTD (127 installs), which looks like a backup. There's also an iOS app with the same name, originally a football data app that was renamed in mid-October. ScorePulse also owns a cricket streaming app (233k installs) and shares a developer domain with a group of cricket piracy apps that use com.puzzle.* game package names. This looks like a team with ready-made shell accounts that rotates wrappers, or one that shares an account-supply service (inference).
If it were you
One-line verdict: Don't touch it. Its growth came from years of Dofu long-timers and working streams that outsiders can't get. It sells piracy of NFL and NBA, the rights that broadcasters most want to protect, so the people behind it face liability, not just delisting.
Who it suits: nobody. Its own previous life lasted only 56 days, and this account has already been actioned once for the same problem.
Who it doesn't suit: any indie developer who wants a lasting product with the account and revenue in their own name. If you copy a "scores + free live" shell, you'll get the same result as the string of Dofu impostors: a few hundred to ten thousand installs, then delisted.
If you still want this need: the need is real. Many Americans are looking for a way to watch their team without paying hundreds of dollars a year for subscriptions. The legal half is the front end, plus helping people spend less on licensed viewing. For example: a lookup tool that answers "which platform is this game on, which is cheapest, where is there a free trial, and is it on free over-the-air in my area?", with team-based alerts. Or a guide for truckers and fans away from home on how to legally watch out-of-market games, bundled with score alerts. Acquisition can follow the season: post in team subreddits, Facebook fan groups, and cord-cutting communities. Monetization comes from league and streaming-platform affiliate commissions, not from piracy streams. You'll compete with ESPN, theScore, and a crowd of comparison sites, which is not easy, but the work can last.
Timing: if you build the legal version, the window follows the season. The NFL regular season runs to early January, the playoffs to the February Super Bowl, and the NBA and NHL to April. To catch this season, launch before December.
What would mean you read it wrong: if Versy Live is still on Play after the Super Bowl next February and installs are still climbing, Play tolerates this kind of "score front" more than we assumed. If any of the Dofu-named impostor apps reaches several hundred thousand installs without the long-timers, the organic search demand is bigger than we estimated, and a legal "where to watch" tool would be worth building sooner.

Bottom line
It's not a new product. It's the pirated-streaming app Dofu, pulled from stores, relaunched under a new name and package. The store listing says "score app", but what it actually sells is the "Watch Live" button on every game on the home screen, which opens unlicensed NFL / NBA / NCAAF / NHL streams. It's gaining traction for three reasons: US sports fans who spent years on Dofu are looking for "the new Dofu"; NFL season is on, with NBA and NHL opening; and the team has ready-made sock-puppet developer accounts and got review through using a game's package name. The differentiators (clean score UI, native player, Fire TV sideloading) only make it look like the "real" one among a pile of Dofu knockoffs. They're not why it grows.

2. What it actually is: Dofu's rebrand to stay alive

ScorePulse still hascom.goa.lmind.studios.scopulsin its portfolio, formerly "Dofu Live NFL NCAA NHL MLB NBA", now renamed "Zentro Sports - Us Sports" (developer list pulled via google-play-scraper + AppBrain). The predecessor's store copy ("fast, quiet live-score app for American sport… No account, no clutter") is written the same way as Versy Live's. - Users said it themselves. The latest 200 US Play reviews include: "Better than the Dofu app", "You guys really improved this Versy app. DOFU last year was hard to watch", "been using dofu sports for a while and now I'm enjoying this", "This APP is better than the original", "Been using this service for a couple of years… This newest upgrade is the best so far", "app keeps buffering, dufu worked much better". The same move is common in this niche: Lumora Technologies' cricket piracy apps all usecom.puzzle.*package names (com.puzzle.game.arrow.escape750k installs,com.puzzle.games.rj.studios260k,com.circ.puzzle.orgde.cric330k); NexoraGig's "Dofu Live" usescom.puzzle.game.craftz.dgames; BrightCore Digital's "Dofu Live" usescom.pro.puzzle.live.dubloxu.dupro(googleplay library, AppstoreSpy). com.jalizaserty.likominaseis a same-name, same-copy "Versy Live: Sports Scores" from developer VAPEMIST LTD, listed 10-11 with only 127 installs. That developer also has "Jalalive" and "Dofu Live Scores Social" (google-play-scraper, Brave search results). The iOS "Versy Live: Sports Scores" (id6773625791) is sold by Kritika Jain, bundle idcom.kritika.footBasketBall, listed 2026-06-11 as a football data app, renamed Versy Live in the 10-14 5.0 update. The US store has only 244 ratings, and it has only shown up at the tail of category charts in Mexico, the UAE and Tanzania (iTunes lookup, appstore library).
Where Dofu came from: Dofu Sports / DofuStream is a pirated-streaming brand that US cord-cutters have used for years to watch NFL / NBA / MLB / NHL / NCAAF for free. The iOS "Dofu Sports" (Omar Ait Ahmad, 20,796 ratings) and "Dofu Sportive Hub" (Tran Tien, 2023) were pulled long ago; a Reddit thread says the official iOS version was removed 2026-03-27. Google Play accounts like "DofuSports Ltd" were pulled repeatedly (AppBrain, Exa, Reddit search snippets). Facebook fan groups constantly have people asking "what's the new Dofu called" and "after an update it turned into a weird game". That second complaint matches the trick exactly: a game package name, then swapped for streaming.
3. Why it's working: why users come now, where from, and why they stay
- Why now: October is peak US sports season. The NFL is in weeks 6–9, NCAAF is mid-season, NBA and NHL have just opened, and MLB playoffs and the World Series are running. The predecessor Dofu Live (ScorePulse) was pulled in early October, leaving older users without an app. Versy Live went up on 10-10 and caught that crowd right on time. It gained about 42k between 10-21 and 10-22, lining up with NBA opening week. A migration notice in the old app or old APK may also have been pushing users over, but I found no direct evidence of that.
- Where users come from:
- Old-user migration (main channel, with evidence). Reviews are full of "used it for years" and "better than the old one," "better than Dofu." Dofu's servers, live sources, Facebook group (the dofustream.com page lists "Group Facebook DofuStream") and word-of-mouth user base are all still around. Change the name and users follow.
- Store search. Search "dofu" on Play and the top results are a pile of apps borrowing the Dofu name. Versy Live's own name doesn't include Dofu, but in Jina search "versy live app dofu" finds its Play page (the referrer carries utm_term=versy live app dofu), which shows people are searching for Dofu to find it. Its #11–41 rank on the US sports free chart also brings organic traffic on its own.
- Community and word of mouth. On Reddit r/eagles someone wrote "I use versy live on my phone, and cast it to my tv"; the OP replied "Never heard of this?" (around mid-October). On Facebook fan groups and fb-answers, people recommend it as Dofu's new name.
- Fire TV sideloading. The official site provides a Downloader code, aimed at the crowd who teach "free games on Firestick" on YouTube. Found no YouTube video naming Versy.
- TikTok / X / media: none. TikHub searches for "versy live" and "versylive" return zero relevant content. Searching "dofu sports" turns up "watch NFL for free" tutorial videos going back 2023 years, but none are about Versy. x-radar: zero posts. No media coverage at all.
- Why people stay: free NFL games that local TV doesn't carry, no sign-up, aimed at "trucker", "out of area" and "won't pay a thousand dollars for a subscription" viewers. Smoother playback than the knockoff Dofu apps ("Better than the Dofu app"), plus a clean interface layer with scores, standings and favorite teams. Complaints center on long ads, only one server, buffering and no casting.
- How it makes money: ads only. Reviews mention "the ad before the server is very long," "TikTok ads can't be closed," "game ads get stuck." AppGoblin detected 18 ad networks and 4 mediation SDKs in the predecessor Dofu Live, estimating monthly revenue under $10K (an estimate, and clearly an underestimate of the ad impressions from long viewing sessions).

5. Differentiation
- For legitimate players: free access to every US pro and college game. That's the pirate "differentiator," and the only real selling point.
- For similar pirate apps: ① inherits Dofu's old users and live sources, giving it the "real" Dofu identity; ② wraps it in a scores product that looks like a legit app (scores, win probabilities, standings, injuries, my teams), passing store review and getting store chart recommendations; ③ has a native player (picture-in-picture, multiple audio tracks, draggable) plus a Fire TV APK; ④ when one account gets banned, immediately swap package name and brand, with a VAPEMIST backup package and an iOS shell.
- Of these differentiators, the ones that drive scale are ① and ④ (old users plus fast shell-swapping); ② is the prerequisite for staying on Play; ③ is what lets it beat the crowd of knockoff Dofu apps on word of mouth.
6. How many people have seen it
Not many people know about it yet: no media, X or TikTok coverage, revenue not disclosed. It only spreads through US cord-cutter Facebook groups, Reddit comment sections and old Dofu users. But the "Dofu shell-swap" route is already being copied by many teams (see the impersonator list above), and it has its own backup package.
7. What others can borrow
(From a compliance standpoint, only the tactics are worth learning. Pirate streaming carries infringement and ban risk; copying the content is not recommended.)

- Are ScorePulse, Lumora Technologies (the cricket pirate group), VAPEMIST LTD and iOS seller Kritika Jain the same team? Only two indirect signals: a shared domain, watchmylov.xyz, and identical names and copy.
- Ad revenue scale; whether the live sources are self-captured or relayed from other pirate sites.
- How long it can survive on Play. The predecessor was delisted after 56 days, and this account has already been penalized for similar violations, so the risk of a ban is high.
