Pocket FM splits its male-oriented fantasy catalog into its own app: Fabled hit the US Music & Audio top 10 in two months
What it is An app from Pocket FM that only carries fantasy, LitRPG, and cultivation audio dramas, with AI-generated visuals. Each series starts free, and later episodes are unlocked one at a time with coins.
Why it took off The parent company moved some fantasy-drama Facebook ad landing pages from the main app to this one. Add popular series like Solo Leveling and Primal Hunter and a proven coin monetization model, and it quickly climbed into the top 10 of the Music & Audio category, which has a low barrier to entry.
CHow you could follow Don't copy this as a fantasy audio-drama app. What you can take is the method: one backend, vertical brands split by genre, different keywords and landing pages to push into small category charts, and the ad formula of hooking on the plot. If you want to enter this genre for real, the only openings are smaller language markets Pocket FM doesn't cover or web-novel rights you negotiate yourself.

Fabled: Fantasy Shows & Audio launched on Google Play in Aug 26. By Nov 6 it was #9 in free and #12 in grossing in the US Music & Audio category, with 27k installs in one week. It isn't a hit from a small team. It's a vertical brand split out of the main app by Pocket FM, which has $500M in annual revenue: the same shows, the same coins, the same ad machine, just a different name and fantasy only. Below: how it came about, where the money comes from, and what this means for small teams building content apps.
A Facebook video with 454 views
On Oct 27 afternoon, a Facebook page called "Pocket FM Fantasy Chronicles" posted a video about a mecha fantasy drama called The Mech Touch. The copy followed Pocket FM's formula from the past few years: "Want to know what happens next? Listen to the audio drama The Mech Touch (free for a limited time), tap the link below, and download the Fabled app right away." By Nov 6, this video had only 454 views.
The change is in that last word. This page started running ads in May, with 218 ads running (Meta Ad Library, 11-06). Before that, every fantasy series, including My Vampire System, Weakest Beast Tamer, and Odyssey of the Stormbringer, sent users to the main Pocket FM app. Starting Oct 20, some ads began linking directly to the Fabled package, with copy changed to "only on the Fabled app." Another page, Fantasy Legends, started earlier: in Sep 16 it began running US ads for First Legendary Beast Master: "Three claw marks unlocked a power no one has ever seen." Tapping through also leads to Fabled.
In other words, Fabled's users weren't grown organically. The parent company redirected part of its fantasy ad traffic from the main app to here.
What it is
An audio-drama app carrying only male-oriented fantasy. The store listing covers the genres thoroughly: LitRPG and system stories, cultivation and leveling, beast taming and summoning, isekai reincarnation, dark epic, plus a section for female readers with Romantasy and vampires. The three lead titles are Solo Leveling, The Primal Hunter, and My Vampire System, all large IPs already running on the main Pocket FM app. The Primal Hunter has 5.8M plays on Pocket FM.
The monetization follows the main app's model: each series starts free, later episodes are unlocked one at a time with coins, and users can also unlock by watching ads. The store listing says "No monthly subscription required," and in-app purchases cost $0.39 to $149.99 each (Google Play, 11-06). Even the version numbers are on the same line as the main app: 9.10.x.
One new element: it isn't audio-only. Reviews mention "it took me a while to realize this was AI, not bad green-screen work," and another reader wrote, "The voice acting is good and the visuals are interesting, but they don't match the story: the story says a three-person squad, but the visuals show five to seven people, and their clothes change from one second to the next" (Google Play, 10-17, 10-08). So Fabled added AI-generated visuals to audio dramas, taking a half-step toward video.
Where users come from
First, the numbers (Google Play cumulative installs and ratings):
| Date | Total installs | Score |
|---|---|---|
| 10-29 | 30,482 | 365 |
| 10-31 | 38,799 | 410 |
| 11-03 | 50,309 | 511 |
| 11-06 | 57,124 | 626 |
Ratings rise steadily by 20 to 43 a day, consistent with ongoing ad spend. 11-06 In the US free chart it rose from #18 a week earlier to #9, and in the grossing chart from #30 to #12. It also reached the category grossing charts in 12 other countries, including Hong Kong, Saudi Arabia, Vietnam, the Philippines, South Africa, Singapore, and Nigeria, ranking between #23 and #28.
There are essentially three sources:
- Meta ads (confirmed). The two Facebook pages above. The creative format matches what CEO Rohan Nayak publicly described on X in Sep 10: up to 1,000 ads per series, about 17.5k a month, with a large model pulling highlights from the drama to write scripts, a hook every 5 seconds, and cuts off on a cliffhanger. He said the company has spent over $100M on acquisition, that CTR rose from 2% to 2.25%, and that acquisition costs fell about 30%. That long post has 3.67M views.
- Store search (inferred). The titles and descriptions include LitRPG, Cultivation, Beast Taming, Isekai, Solo Leveling, and Primal Hunter. The main app is called "Audio Dramas," which ranks less well on these terms than a vertical package would. No keyword ranking data is available, so this is unverified.
- Search volume for the IP itself. IGN and Anime News Network both covered the Solo Leveling audio drama's second season when it launched in February.
Searching "Fabled app" on TikTok returns only the reading app Fable. Nobody on X or Reddit discusses it specifically.
Scale needs to be read alongside the parent company. In the same week, the Pocket FM main app added about 1.01M installs, with 240M cumulative. Fabled's weekly gain is only 2.6% of that.
Where the money comes from, and why split it out
The money path is nothing new: a power-fantasy opening (the underdog, the system grants a power, the comeback) pulls people in. One free episode a day builds the habit, each episode ends on a hook, and listeners who want to binge top up coins. First-time top-ups are priced cheaply. The most-liked review reads, "A lot of this is free, and I paid one dollar to unlock 40 extra episodes, perfect for the drive" (Google Play, 9-14,50 people found it helpful). Being #12 in the US grossing chart shows it is already collecting money.
Why not just sell fantasy inside the main app? Inferred reasons:
- Avoiding the main brand's reputation. Pocket FM has a bad name on Reddit. One r/audiobooks thread is titled "PocketFM Review: A Disgraceful Scam," and an r/Supergene user calculated that finishing one book costs about $500. LitRPG readers are wary of the brand, so a new name is effectively a clean slate. Fabled is now rated 4.7.
- The home page isn't dominated by romance. Most of the main app is werewolf romance, so male fantasy users would feel "this isn't for me" when they open it.
- Ads and store keywords are more precise. "Only on Fabled" reads more like a fantasy brand than "on Pocket FM."
In the same long post, the CEO also said the company gives internal new projects $1M and 12 to 18 months to validate, and that the short-drama app Pocket Saga came out of this process. Fabled launched in Aug 26, and 12 days later the same company released LiteFM. It looks like a systematic approach to splitting genres and testing the market (inferred; whether Fabled is part of this mechanism is unverified).
Who it's competing with
| Product | Scale (Google Play) | How Fabled differs |
|---|---|---|
| Pocket FM main app | 240M installs, parent company $500M annual revenue | All genres, mostly romance; most of Fabled's series overlap with it |
| Audible | 277M installs | Some titles, like The Primal Hunter, have official audiobooks; single narrator, bought whole or by subscription |
| Soundbooth Theater / GraphicAudio | Niche | Premium full-cast LitRPG, sold by the book, slow updates |
| Royal Road / WebNovel / Wuxiaworld | 290k / 32.3M / 550k | Text reading, same readers |
| Kuku FM, GoodFM, Dreame FM, Quinn, etc. | 550k to 148M | Also pay-per-episode audio dramas, but all genres, romance-heavy |
I couldn't find another vertical app focused on fantasy / LitRPG audio dramas. The gap looks real, but the one filling it is the biggest player in this niche.
How many people know about it
Nobody seems to know the name Fabled: no press coverage, no discussion on X or Reddit. But the playbook behind it is the most public in the industry. TechCrunch and Forbes both wrote about Pocket FM's $500M annualized revenue and AI producing 93% of its audio, and the CEO posted a long write-up of his ad formula. Pay-per-episode audio drama is already crowded.
If it were you
C. Worth learning from, not worth chasing. Fabled got where it is through three things followers can't easily get: a ready-made fantasy catalog (including licensed IP like Solo Leveling and Primal Hunter), an ad machine producing thousands of creatives a month, and a validated coin-based monetization system. A team without those three can't reproduce this curve by building the same fantasy audio app. And the biggest player has already taken this vertical itself.
Who it fits: content platforms that already have a catalog and a paid acquisition team (web novels, audiobooks, short drama) and want to split out one genre to climb a smaller category chart or shed a weak main-brand reputation.
Who it doesn't fit: indie devs with no content licensing and no Meta ad spend. Costs for pay-per-episode content apps sit almost entirely in content and paid acquisition; the app itself has no moat.
How to do it: Two moves you can steal. One is "vertical packs by category": same backend, different brand, store keywords and ad landing pages per niche. In a low-barrier category like Music & Audio, 20-30K installs a week can get you into the US Top 10. The other is a creative formula: story clips paired with "limited-time free," one hook every 5 seconds, cutting off on a cliffhanger. If you insist on this category, the only real angle is a small-language market Pocket FM doesn't cover, or licensing audio from mid-tier authors on Royal Road and making it a daily AI-voiced release, proving the unit economics in one language first.
How to get users: story-clip ads on Meta and TikTok, plus long-tail store terms like LitRPG, Cultivation, and Isekai. Without paid acquisition there's basically no other route.
When to move: no rush. This window doesn't belong to small teams.
What would show I'm wrong: (1) a small team unrelated to Pocket FM builds a fantasy vertical audio app from licensed web novels plus AI voice, and passes 100K installs within three months, which would mean the content and acquisition barriers are lower than I think; (2) Fabled drops off the US category chart and stops running ads early in 2027, which would mean vertical splitting was just an experiment that didn't work; (3) conversely, if Pocket FM keeps splitting out romance, thriller and other vertical packs and they chart, then "pack splitting" is a repeatable growth method other content platforms should copy.

Why Fabled: Fantasy Shows & Audio (com.radio.pocketfm.fantasy) worked
Channel: Google Play | Developer: PocketFM (Pocket Entertainment) | Store launch: 2026-08-26 | Research day: 2026-11-06
Bottom line
Fabled isn't a new product that appeared out of nowhere. It's Pocket FM (annualized revenue $500M) splitting its already-validated male fantasy / LitRPG genre out of its main app into a vertical app. The content (Solo Leveling, The Primal Hunter, My Vampire System, Shadow Slave, etc.), the code (version 9.10.6, same codebase as the main app), the monetization (free preview + coins to unlock episodes + ad-unlocks) and the ad machine were all copied from the parent. Its growth came from the parent's Meta ad matrix redirecting some fantasy creatives from the main app to Fabled, plus a standalone placement in Play search for terms like "LitRPG / fantasy audio". If it "worked," what worked is Pocket FM's playbook; Fabled is a single experiment copying that playbook into a vertical.
1. Data (from our database)
- Installs: 2026-10-29 30,482 → 2026-11-06 57,124,7 days +26,642 (googleplay.app_profile / app_day). Rating count over the same period 365 → 626, steadily +20–43 a day, in line with the ad pacing.
- US Music & Audio category Top Free: 10-29 #18 → #11-06 #9; Top Grossing: #30 → #12 (googleplay.chart_rank, us). It also charted in category Top Grossing at #23–28 in hk, sa, vn, ph, za, ae, th, sg, ng, my, nl and pl, across 13 countries in total.
- In-app purchases $0.39–$149.99 each; store page lists "Contains ads, In-app purchases"; rating 4.7 (Play store page, 2026-11-06).
- Scale comparison: over the same period the main app Pocket FM added +1,010,213 installs in 7 days, 240M cumulative; Fabled's 7-day gain is about 2.6% of the main app's.
- Other apps from the same developer in the database: Pocket FM (240M), Pocket Novel (12.1M), Pocket Saga short drama (1.75M, +117K in 7 days), LiteFM (listed 2026-09-07, 10K). LiteFM went live 12 days after Fabled, which suggests the parent is systematically splitting out apps to test genres and formats.
- iOS: Fabled not found on the App Store (iTunes API was rate-limited that day, so unverified); Meta ads for fantasy creatives targeting iOS still land on the main app (id1538433480).

I found no other app doing a "fantasy / LitRPG vertical audio drama"; comparable apps are almost all all-genre.
3. Growth tactics (evidence)
- Meta paid ads (confirmed): In the Meta ad library, Page "Pocket FM Fantasy Chronicles" (13.9K likes, 218 ads running, earliest seen 2026-05-15) initially sent all its fantasy shows (My Vampire System, Weakest Beast Tamer, Primal Partners, Odyssey of the Stormbringer) to the main app. From 2026-10-20, creatives began linking straight to
com.radio.pocketfm.fantasywith copy reading "only on the Fabled app". A second Page, "Fantasy Legends", has been running US ads since 2026-09-16 with some pointing to the Fabled package (First Legendary Beast Master, Weakest Beast Tamer). Public Facebook videos from 2026-10-27 also show "The Mech Touch … download the Fabled app" and "The Outcast's Rise … only on the Fabled app". The creative format is the one the CEO described publicly: "To find out, listen to the audio series '…' (FREE for a limited period)" plus a 90-second high-hook story video. - Parent company's industrial-scale paid acquisition machine (confirmed): CEO Rohan Nayak 2026-09-10 X long post (3.67M views): spent over $100M on ads. The core was lifting CTR from 2% to 2.25%, cutting CAC by ~30%. They use LLMs to pull plot highlights into 5-minute scripts, with a new hook every 5 seconds, up to 1,000 ads per show, roughly 17.5k a month. Fabled runs on the capacity of this machine.
- Store search placement (inferred): titles and descriptions are packed with long-tail terms like LitRPG, Progression Fantasy, Cultivation, Beast Taming, Isekai, Romantasy, Solo Leveling and Primal Hunter. The main app is called "Audio Dramas" and ranks worse on these terms than a precise vertical pack would. No keyword ranking data, unverified.
- IP recognition (confirmed): the Solo Leveling audio drama is a partnership with Soundist (season two 2026-02-16, covered by IGN and Anime News Network); The Primal Hunter has 5.8M plays on Pocket FM, and people on r/litrpg have discussed its full-cast version. These IPs come with built-in search demand.
- Internal "$1M test check" mechanism (background confirmed; whether Fabled is part of it unverified): the CEO says internal new projects get $1M and 12–18 months to prove out, which is how Pocket Saga came about; Fabled (8-26) and LiteFM (9-07) launching one after another fits that pattern.
- Found no TikTok creators, Reddit threads, X posts, or press coverage about Fabled itself; searching "Fabled app" on TikTok only returns Fable, a reading app.
4. Why people come, and why they stay or pay
- Come: the ads open with a power-fantasy story (underdog → system → comeback), cut off at a cliffhanger, with a "free for a limited time" push to download. Viewers see a familiar IP name.
- Stay: one free episode a day builds a listening habit. Episodes run 8–12 minutes, with a hook at the end of each (the CEO said daily listening rose from 25 to over 150 minutes). A user review on Play: "lots of free content… unlocked 40 extra episodes for a dollar, awesome for listening while driving" (2026-09-14,50 people found it helpful).
- Pay: coins unlock episodes at $0.39–$149.99 each, and watching ads also unlocks them. The new app's first top-up is cheap (one review says $1 unlocked 40 episodes), which works as a conversion hook. It ranks #12 in the US Top Grossing category, so it is already taking money.
- Something new: reviews mention AI-generated visuals ("took me a while to figure out this was AI", "pictures… disjointed and inconsistent"). So Fabled is an audio show with AI art or video, a step further toward video than the main app. It is a lighter version of the Pocket Saga approach.
5. Differentiation
- Outward-facing: it only does the male-skewing fantasy/LitRPG vertical, branded as Fabled rather than Pocket FM. That avoids the Pocket FM reputation on Reddit ("PocketFM Review: A Disgraceful Scam" on r/audiobooks, "one book costs ~$500" on r/Supergene). For LitRPG readers it is a clean new entry point, not a home screen full of werewolf romance.
- Behind the scenes: the content, code, monetization, and paid acquisition all belong to the parent company, so the real moat is Pocket FM's content library (AI-produced, 99% of new content) and its ad-buying machine, not Fabled itself.
- Is differentiation why it took off? Partly. A focused brand makes the ad copy and store keywords more precise, and the ratings are cleaner (4.7 versus the main app's reputation), which is why it climbed the US category chart fast. But the scale (7 days, 27k) is set entirely by how much the parent spends. A team without a content library and an ad machine can't reproduce a "fantasy audio drama app" and get the same result.
6. Visibility and copycats
- Fabled itself: almost nobody knows about it yet. No press, no major X accounts, and no dedicated Reddit discussion. x-radar returns 0 results for "Fabled PocketFM".
- Parent company: revenue is public and widely reported (TechCrunch 2026-09-10 "$500M ARR", Forbes, a CEO long-form post on X with 3.67M views). The "pay per episode audio drama" category is already crowded (Kuku FM, GoodFM, Dreame FM, Quinn, Headfone, Pratilipi FM).
- Copycats: found no other audio drama app running a fantasy vertical.
7. What others can learn
- Big platforms split verticals into separate apps: same backend and content library, new brand, new store keywords, new ad landing pages. They reach the top 10 of small category charts (Music & Audio) quickly and avoid the main brand's bad reputation.
- Ad formula: story-clip videos with a hook every 5 seconds, cut at a cliffhanger, paired with a "free for a limited time" offer. Targets: CTR ≥2.5%, ≥55% completion at 3 seconds.
- Monetization: one free episode a day, coins to unlock episodes, unlock by watching ads, and a cheap first top-up.
- What a small team can actually copy: store keyword squatting on long-tail terms like LitRPG, cultivation, and beast-taming, plus the low-cost format of "audio + AI visuals". The prerequisite is licensed content or an AI production pipeline.
8. Still unclear
- Whether Fabled is on iOS (not found; iOS fantasy ads still send users to the main app).
- How much was spent and the ROI; the install curve before 10-29 (the library starts at 10-29).
- Whether the content is exclusive or fully overlaps the main app, and how much is AI voice or AI visuals.
- Whether it is an internal $1M experiment that might, like LiteFM, stay just an experiment.
- No data on store keyword rankings.
