# Watch an episode, get £20, cash out at £300: how ReelFree bought 1.15M installs with a threshold nobody reaches

**What it is** A short-drama app that keeps flashing "rewards" of tens of pounds on screen, but you have to build up £300 before you can cash out. In practice it makes money from ads you watch.

**Why it took off** Feed ads sell the "earn by watching dramas" hook to get people in. An inflated balance keeps people watching and watching ads. Budget was released in batches, and it picked countries with low leaderboard thresholds and high ad prices, pushing installs up one tier at a time.

**C** **How you could follow it** Don't copy the "earn by watching" shell. Copy the playbook: Early Access to gather data before going live, releasing volume country by country, and reskinning the same drama library into multiple apps. Swap the shell for a legitimate "free dramas + coin unlocks" model.

Grade C: the playbook is worth studying, but the same playbook's top players already have 17M installs, the category has been reported by media as a scam, and this one is already declining. Its core hook violates Play and AdMob policies against misleading rewards, so the window isn't open to followers. Almost nobody knows about it yet

ReelFree, a short-drama app from a small Chengdu company, never mentions money on its store page, yet its ads say "watch dramas and earn." By releasing budget in tiers, it hit 1.15M installs in three months across Europe, the Gulf and Southeast Asia, and it's now on the way down. Below: how the economics work, why it runs, what to learn from it, and what to avoid.

### A person who reached $300 and couldn't withdraw

In early July 2026, a post appeared on Reddit's r/beermoney (a subreddit about making pocket money online): "I mean that ReelFree on Google Play, where you watch silly dramas for money. I can't find anything about it online. If I add PayPal to withdraw, is there a risk?"

A reply below: "I watched a cute period drama about twin boys separated at birth. I built up the $300 withdrawal threshold. It has no real withdrawal option at all."

On Aug 31, a UK blogger who specializes in testing "earn money" apps published a review that opened with "If you've seen ReelFree's ads…" The flow he logged: an ad plays on open; the progress bar has to go around three times before the "claim" button lights up; tapping it pops up a reward of £20 or more. Daily check-in gives £30 on day one, £40 on day two, £50 on day three, and £150 on day seven. The withdrawal threshold is £300. His verdict: "This looks more like an ad trap than a way to make money."

That's the whole ReelFree hook: **the balance climbs fast, so you feel "almost there" and keep watching. And every extra minute you watch, it serves you more ads.**

### Who made it

The developer on Google Play is ShuVast. Its website chuanshuhan.com says "Chengdu Chuanshuhan Technology, focused on mobile going-global business," and the contact email is a personal Gmail. Another app under the same name, Nex Drama, launched in March 2025, has 3.77M installs, and now adds only about two hundred a day (third-party data, 10-29). It's an ordinary free short-drama app with no cash bait.

ReelFree is basically a second product built on the same drama library and backend, reskinned with an "earn by watching" shell. It's a small team, not a big company.

### How it grew

The store lists the launch date as 2026-09-02, but that isn't the real debut. People were already asking about it on Reddit in early July. By around Aug 13, third-party tracking had recorded about 310k installs. It first launched in Early Access to collect data, and the release date reset when it went to full release, so it looked like a brand-new app on "new releases" charts.

The curve since then has come in steps (before September, these are third-party estimates; from late October, they're Google Play install counts):

| Timeline | Total installs |
|---|---|
| 08-13 | About 310k (estimated) |
| 09-09 → 09-16 | About 380k → 660k, +280k in a week (est.) |
| 10-12 | Passed 1M (est.) |
| 10-29 | 1,106,302 |
| 11-06 | 1,158,030,7 days +52k |

In Sep 10, Sep 15–16, Oct 4, Oct 9, and Oct 12 it jumped by tens of thousands each time, with nearly flat stretches in between. This doesn't look like word of mouth slowly spreading. It looks like budget released in batches, with a new set of countries opened each time (inferred).

The countries were chosen carefully: in Oct 6 it reached #5 on Ukraine's entertainment free chart and was listed on 19 free charts across 18 countries (ASO chart tracking). It then moved into the US, Netherlands, Australia, Sweden, Taiwan, and Turkey. Local entertainment charts in places like Ukraine and Poland have low thresholds, while Western Europe and the Gulf have high ad prices. An app that earns from ads needs both.

The peak ran from mid-September to mid-October. By early November, it had only #120–180 on the entertainment free charts in a few storefronts: Poland, France, Singapore, Italy, Saudi Arabia, and Malaysia (Google Play charts, 11-06). Daily installs fell from tens of thousands in September to a few thousand, and some days hit zero.

### Where users come from

It came from feed ads. The blogger came in through an ad, and the Reddit users came for the "watch dramas, get paid" pitch. Which platform the ads ran on and what the creatives looked like can't be found from outside (unverified).

The store page is telling. In early September, the 1.6.0 version's description still said "Easy money from short dramas… check-in, watching, inviting friends and other tasks… fast payout, easy withdrawal." The current description has only "massive drama library, HD, smart recommendations." **The money talk lives only in the ads, and was removed from the store page** . The likely reason is to reduce the risk of Google Play treating it as "misleading rewards" (inferred).

There's no content or creator channel. A TikTok search for ReelFree turns up only clip accounts for FreeReels and ReelShort. There's zero discussion on X. The name ReelFree is the same words as FreeReels, which has 246M installs, reversed, so it may be picking up some search traffic on the side (inferred, unverified).

3,234 ratings, averaging 3.93 stars: 5-star 64%, 1-star 21%, and only 47 2-star ratings. Lots at the extremes, little in the middle (Google Play, 11-06). It looks like a rating prompt that appeared when people claimed rewards (inferred). Ratings only cover 0.28% of installs. Most people installed it, watched a few ads, and left.

### Where the money comes back

No in-app purchases, only ads: app-open ads, rewarded videos before claiming a reward, and interstitials between episodes. The math is simple: **if the ad revenue from a user before they leave exceeds the cost of acquiring them, the business works** . Almost nobody reaches the £300 threshold, and even those who do have no usable withdrawal channel, so the "reward" costs nothing. It's just a number that keeps people around.

Its growth phase lasted about three months and it's now declining. For this kind of product, that may simply be the normal lifespan: run one wave, change the shell, run another.

### Who it's competing with

It's a copycat product itself. In the "watch dramas to earn" niche, the leaders already broke out (Google Play installs, 11-06):

| Product | Installs | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Coin Drama | 17.9M | Launched 2026-03, still +7M 1.18 days later |
| CashDrama | 17.8M | Old clone, cash-out threshold about $100 |
| LuckyDramas – Watch & Earn | 14.2M | Store page literally says Watch & Earn |
| ShortFly / CoinShort / Reels Cash | 3.36M–4.48M | Launched gradually through the first half of 2026 |
| **ReelFree** | **1.16M** | Mid-to-lower tier |

Above it sit the legit "free dramas + coin unlocks" apps: Kunlun's FreeReels (246M), Kuku's FreeDrama (42.6M), TikTok's PineDrama; above those, paid-unlock apps like ReelShort and DramaBox. Media in Thailand and Vietnam have already reported this "watch dramas to earn" playbook as a scam.

ReelFree's difference from its peers isn't the product, it's two tactics: reward values inflated to the extreme (the £300 threshold is three times higher than comparable apps), and the store page and ads telling two different stories.

### If it were you

**In one line: you can learn a genuinely useful paid acquisition playbook from this, but don't copy the "watch dramas to earn" shell itself.** The leader is already at 17M installs and still climbing, so if you enter you're the fiftieth clone; worse, it relies on showing a balance that can never be withdrawn, which violates Google Play and AdMob policies on misleading rewards. It could be mass-delisted or have its ad account banned at any time, and the timing isn't in your hands.

**Who it suits** : small international teams that already have a short-drama catalog and backend, run feed ads, and can calculate CPI and ad ARPU per country. **Who it doesn't suit** : indie devs who haven't run paid acquisition at scale. In this model the product barely matters; all the craft is in ad buying and unit economics.

**What's worth copying is the playbook, not the shell:**

- Launch on Early Access first to test retention and ad revenue, then switch to the full release once the numbers clear the bar, and get a fresh "newly launched" status along the way.

- Release budget in tiers, with a new batch of countries per tier: start with low-bar Eastern European markets for chart placement, then move to higher-CPM Western Europe, the Gulf, and Australia.

- Reuse the same catalog and backend with a different monetization shell to ship a second and third app, at very low cost.

- Swap the shell for a legitimate "free dramas + coins to unlock" model (like FreeReels and PineDrama), or honestly build low-threshold points that can really be cashed out. Don't make cash promises you can't keep.

**How to acquire users** : feed ads, with campaigns split by country, using "watch full dramas for free" creatives rather than "watch dramas to earn."

**When to get in** : there's no clear window. This is an already mature paid acquisition category, and getting in early or late makes little difference. What decides the outcome is whether you can push CPI below ARPU.

**What would show this read is wrong** : if over the next six months Coin Drama and CashDrama-style apps keep going unpunished by Play and keep shipping updates in volume, the platform tolerates this model more than expected and copying it is less risky. Conversely, if they start getting delisted in batches, even the legit "free dramas + coins" approach needs careful incentive design.

Competitors

| Name | Where | Launched | Scale | How it differs from this one |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Coin Drama(coin.com.drama) | Android | 2026-03-17 | 17.9M installs, +1.18M in 7 days | The leader of the same model is 15× its size and still growing fast |
| CashDrama(com.Cash.Drama) | Android | Earlier than 2026 (unverified) | 17.8M installs | An older app in the same model, cash-out threshold about $100, lower than ReelFree's £300 |
| LuckyDramas – Watch & Earn / Reels Cash / CoinShort / ShortFly | Android | 2025-06 to 2026-07 | 3.36M–14.2M installs | Other companies' similar watch-to-earn apps: some write Watch & Earn right on the store page; ReelFree's store page doesn't mention earning |
| Nex Drama (same developer) | Android | 2025-03-31 | 3.77M installs, growing about 200 per day | The same developer's regular free short-drama app with no cash bait; ReelFree is a second app built on it with a cash-earning shell added |

| ReelShort / DramaBox / GoodShort | Android | 2022–2023 | About 100M to 300M installs | Paid short-drama platform that earns from in-app purchases and subscriptions, and doesn't promise payouts |

Where users come from

- Inferred **Feed-ad acquisition (platform unknown)** : the review source says users arrived via ads, which promise earning from watching dramas while the store page doesn't; the install curve steps in 1–100k blocks (AppstoreSpy estimates), and the number of countries charting grows in waves (AppInsider timeline); our Meta, TikTok, and Google ad libraries don't track it

- **Verified** **Country selection: Eastern Europe, Western Europe, Gulf, Southeast Asia** : 10-06 it reached #5 on Ukraine's Entertainment Top Free chart and charted in 18 countries' 19 charts at the same time (ASO Lab); it later added the US, Netherlands, Australia, Sweden, Taiwan, and Turkey; it's now in Poland, France, Italy, Saudi Arabia, Singapore, Malaysia, and the UAE (googleplay database)

- **Verified** **Early Access test, then full release (launch date reset)** : the store lists the launch date as 09-02, but by 08-13 it already had about 309k installs (AppstoreSpy), and Reddit threads were discussing it as early as 2026-07; the review mentions it was in Early Access at the time

- **Verified** **Cash bait + stripping the earning pitch from the store page** : the 1.6.0 version's description read "watch short dramas and easily earn, fast cash-out" (apkcombo), and that text has since been removed; inside the app, single tasks show £20+, daily check-ins £30–150, cash-out threshold £300 (myroomismyoffice)

- Inferred **Piggybacking on FreeReels search terms** : the name ReelFree is almost FreeReels' words reversed, and FreeReels has 246M installs; this is an inference

- Inferred **Content and creators** : searching "ReelFree" on TikTok returns only content for FreeReels, ReelShort, and PineDrama; the X corpus has zero mentions over 90 days

## ReelFree (com.reelfree.drama): an ad-monetized app that pays users cash for watching short dramas; paid acquisition drove it to 1.15M installs

> Data: our googleplay database (daily observations from 2026-10-29 to 11-06; the since-launch curve is an AppstoreSpy estimate, table app_day_ext); web evidence is in the source of each item. Today is 2026-11-06.

### One line

ReelFree is a short-drama app from a small Chengdu company going global (Chengdu Chuanshu Han Technology, personal email mianmingtu@gmail.com). Its real hook is "earn money watching dramas": single tasks show £20+, a daily check-in pays £30–150, but the cash-out threshold is £300 / $300. No in-app purchases; it runs entirely on ad monetization. Users come from feed ads (the ads talk about earning, while the store page removed the earning language long ago). It took off through **paid acquisition plus cash bait that stretches ad-watching time** , not through the product itself. Within this category it's a small-to-mid player among dozens of identical apps.

### Basic facts

- Developer: listed on Play as ShuVast; the developer website chuanshuhan.com belongs to "Chengdu Chuanshu Han Technology," whose homepage says it "focuses on mobile going-global business" ([chuanshuhan.com](https://chuanshuhan.com/)); contact email mianmingtu@gmail.com (app table in the googleplay database). On AppstoreSpy, another app by the same developer is credited to "TU MIANMING" (an individual's name, [AppstoreSpy](https://appstorespy.com/android-google-play/com.short.nexdrama-trends-revenue-statistics-downloads-ratings)). This is a small team or individual developer, not a major company.

- 2 apps under the account: ReelFree, and **Nex Drama** (com.short.nexdrama, launched 2025-03-31, 3.77M installs, 16.3K ratings at 4.6 stars, now growing only about 200 per day; [chrome-stats 2026-10-29](https://chrome-stats.com/d/com.short.nexdrama), [AppInsider developer page](https://appinsider.io/android/developer/shuvast/x53687556617374)). The recall note says HyShorts is also from this company, which is wrong: HyShorts' developer is Art Maker Studio ([apppage.net](https://apppage.net/preview/com.short.hypro.playlet)).

- **The launch date was reset** : the store says 2026-09-02, but AppstoreSpy already recorded about 309k installs on **2026-08-13** ; on Reddit r/beermoney someone asked "can ReelFree cash out via PayPal" around **early 2026-07** (snapshot 2026-07-02, [sentinel snapshot](https://reddit.sentinel-team.org/posts/1uk9ocj/snapshots/2026-07-02T23%3A42%3A51.560856Z)). So it was live at least from 6 to July (then in Early Access), and 09-02 is the date it was reset when moving to full release or when the info was edited.

- Monetization: no in-app purchases (offers_iap=False), labeled "contains ads," Teen rating, package about 139MB, current version 1.9.0 (updated 11-03, googleplay database app_snap).

- **The store copy was changed** : the 09-03 1.6.0 version (a Turkish-language page captured by apkcombo) still said "watch short dramas and easily earn… check-ins, watching, inviting friends and many other tasks… fast payout, easy cash-out" ([apkcombo](https://apkcombo.com/tr/reelfree/com.reelfree.drama/)). The current description only says "massive short-drama library, HD, smart recommendations," and never mentions money. A review blogger also noticed: "The store page doesn't say it's an earning app, but the ads do" ([myroomismyoffice, 2026-08-31](https://myroomismyoffice.com/reelfree-app-review/)).

### Growth data

| Timeline | Total installs | Source |
|---|---|---|
| 2026-08-13 | ~309k | AppstoreSpy estimate |
| 2026-09-02 | ~361k | AppstoreSpy estimate |
| 2026-09-09 → 09-16 | 379k → 660k (+280k in one week) | AppstoreSpy estimate |
| 2026-10-04 | ~908k (+98k in a single observation) | AppstoreSpy estimate |
| 2026-10-12 | ~1.03M (10-15 AppInsider recorded "past 1M") | AppstoreSpy estimate / [AppInsider](https://appinsider.io/android/app/com.reelfree.drama) |
| 2026-10-29 | 1,106,302 | googleplay library |
| 2026-11-06 | 1,158,030 (+51,728 over 7 days, averaging about 7,400 per day) | googleplay library |

- Growth comes in **steps** (09-10, 09-15/16, 10-04, 10-09, 10-12 each jump by tens of thousands), with almost flat stretches in between. That's what budget released in batches looks like, not organic word of mouth building slowly.

- The peak ran from mid-September to mid-October: ASO Lab recorded that **on 10-06 it reached #5 on Ukraine's Entertainment Top Free chart** , while charting on 19 free charts across 18 countries at the same time ([ASO Lab](https://getasolab.com/apps/com.reelfree.drama)); AppInsider recorded it entering the US chart on 9-25, and from 10-12 to 10-15 it kept adding the Netherlands, Australia, Sweden, Taiwan, and Turkey.

- It's on the decline now: from 10-29 to 11-06 it appears only on Entertainment Top Free charts in 7 storefronts (Poland, France, Singapore, Italy, Saudi Arabia, Malaysia, UAE), ranking 113–200 (googleplay database chart_rank). Daily growth has fallen from 2–50k in September to a few thousand.

- Ratings: 3,234 in total, averaging 3.93 stars; 1★ 669 (21%), 5★ 2,071 (64%), 2★ only 47, a polarized distribution with many at the extremes and few in the middle (googleplay database 11-06). Ratings cover only 0.28% of installs, and there are just 59 written reviews. Our review sample has no recent reviews for it.

### Competitors

Similar products fall into three tiers (install numbers all from the googleplay database 11-06):

1. **"Watch dramas to earn" incentive apps (the true peers)** : Coin Drama (coin.com.drama, launched 2026-03-17, 17.9M installs, +1.18M over 7 days), the older app of the same name CashDrama (com.Cash.Drama, 17.8M), LuckyDramas – Watch & Earn (14.2M, 2025-06), Reels Cash: Watch & Earn (3.36M), CoinShort (3.61M, 2026-04), ShortFly (4.48M, 2026-07), plus newer CashDrama spin-offs, HotDrama, SnapShort and others built on the same template (see the play_com.xj.cash.drama report in this directory). ReelFree's 1.15M places it in the lower-middle of this tier.

2. **Big companies' "free + coins" approach** : FreeReels (Kunlun Skywork, 246M installs), FreeDrama (Kuku, launched 2026-04, 42.6M), and TikTok's PineDrama. These are licensed catalogs with ad unlocks, some with points, but they don't pitch "cash out hundreds of pounds."

3. **Paid short-drama platforms** : ReelShort, DramaBox, GoodShort (98.6M), My Drama (10.4M). They earn through in-app purchases and subscriptions and don't promise payouts.

Compared with peers, ReelFree differs in two ways: (a) reward values are extremely inflated, with single tasks at £20+, check-ins up to £150 over 7 days, and a cash-out threshold of £300, clearly higher than the roughly $100 thresholds of CashDrama-type apps; (b) the store page has been stripped of earning language, so only the ads talk about money, which lowers the risk of Play delisting it for "misleading rewards." Both are monetization and compliance tactics, not differences in product experience.

### Where users come from

1. **Ad networks (high confidence, specific platform unverified)** : the review text says "If you have seen advertisements for ReelFree…", so users came in from ads; the ads promise money for watching shows, and the store page doesn't mention it (myroomismyoffice). Installs jump in steps, and the countries it charts in get added in batches over a week, which fits per-country ad groups. Our Meta, TikTok and Google ad libraries haven't tracked it (we only track products on our list, so no hit doesn't mean no ads).

2. **Country selection** : it has charted in Ukraine, Turkey, Eastern Europe, Western Europe (France, Italy, the Netherlands, Sweden, Poland), the Middle East (Saudi Arabia, UAE), Southeast Asia (Singapore, Malaysia), plus the US, Australia and Taiwan. Ad eCPMs are high in Europe and the Gulf, and the entertainment charts in Ukraine and Poland have low thresholds. The "high-eCPM European traffic" in its recall notes matches this.

3. **ASO and store search (minor effect)** : the names ReelFree and FreeReels (246M installs) are almost the same words reversed, so it may be catching searches for "free reels". This is an inference, not verified.

4. **No creators or content found** . A TikTok search for "ReelFree" only returns clip accounts for FreeReels, ReelShort and PineDrama; the X corpus has zero mentions in 90 days; Reddit has one r/beermoney verification thread.

5. **Ratings** : 2★, very few, bimodal, with some sign of prompting good reviews (for example, a rating dialog shown when users claim a reward). Not verified.

### Where the money comes from

No in-app purchases, so all revenue is ads. On open it shows an ad first. During a show the progress bar has to spin three times before you can tap "claim", and claiming pops a rewarded video. The on-screen balance climbs fast, which makes users feel they're "almost at the cash-out line" and keeps them watching. The £300 threshold is basically out of reach (a Reddit user says that at $300 they still couldn't find a working cash-out method). Every extra minute a user stays means more ad impressions, so ad revenue per user (ARPU) can exceed cost per install (CPI), and that's the math that makes it work. The developer's other app, Nex Drama, has stopped growing; ReelFree is effectively a second app on the same catalog and backend with a "make money" wrapper. Its growth window was about 3 months, and it's now declining.

### Visibility

**Almost nobody knows about it yet.** There's only one "avoid this" review blog post (myroomismyoffice, 2026-08-31), one Reddit verification thread, and aggregator pages from ASO Lab, AppInsider and IndieTower. No press coverage, zero discussion on X, and no one has publicly reported earnings. The "watch shows to earn money" category has already been reported on as a scam pattern by Thai PBS and Vietnam's VnExpress (see the play_com.xj.cash.drama report), and the leaders Coin Drama and CashDrama are both above 17M installs, so the space is crowded.

### Copycats

We found no product that copies ReelFree specifically. It's a follower itself: by the time it entered, Coin Drama, CashDrama and LuckyDramas had been running for several months.

### Differentiation

There's almost no product differentiation: the catalog, UI and recommendations are close to Nex Drama and other short-drama packs. The difference is in the playbook: reward values and thresholds are set more aggressively, and the store page and the ads tell two different stories. Its reach to 1M installs comes from paid acquisition plus this hook, not from differentiation. Judging by how fast it's fading, the hook doesn't retain users much either.

### What to borrow

- Test with Early Access first, then convert to the full release once the data is good (the release date resets at conversion, so on the charts it looks like a "new app").

- Ramp budget in steps, and add a batch of new countries with each increase, starting with Eastern Europe and the Gulf, where entertainment-chart thresholds are low and eCPM is high.

- Build a second app on the same catalog and backend with a different monetization wrapper (swap paid unlocks for rewarded ads). Low cost.

- Parts not to copy: using cash promises you can't deliver to push ad watching violates Google Play and AdMob policies on misleading rewards. Reviews and Reddit already call it out, and the category has been reported as a scam. The legitimate version is the FreeReels or PineDrama model: free shows plus coins or points to unlock episodes.

### Unknowns

- Where ads ran, how much was spent, and what the creatives looked like: our ad libraries don't have it.

- The actual launch date (estimated 2026-06 or July) and installs during Early Access.

- Whether anyone has actually cashed out successfully, and whether ratings were incentivized or faked.

- How much search traffic the name overlap with FreeReels brings in.

- Business registration for Chuanshu Han Technology not found; "Chengdu Chuanshu Han Technology" only appears on its website.
