# A Riyadh metro map, 694 installs in three weeks: what a reused template gets you in a new city

**What it is** An offline map and transfer-route planner app for the Riyadh Metro, with fares, timetables, and GPS arrival alerts, in English, Arabic, and Urdu.

**Why it took off** Strictly speaking, it hasn't taken off yet: keyword stuffing works well for it. It ranks #3 on Play in Saudi Arabia for "riyadh metro," and the new-release boost brings in about 70 organic installs a day, but its chart position is already sliding.

**C** **How you could follow it** Don't do Riyadh. Copy the playbook: one metro template, official open data, ASO in the workers' native languages, and roll it out to cities where the official app is hard to use, there are many foreign residents, and Google Maps coverage is poor, launching before new lines open.

C grade: the Riyadh niche already has a dozen similar apps. The top third-party app has only 37k installs after two years, and the official app plus Google Maps keep the ceiling very low. The city-swap playbook is worth learning, but copying this particular product isn't worth it. Hardly anyone knows about it yet

Data (updated daily) · first launch 2026-10-18 · 11-07 installs 694

Android · Total installs worldwide

Data 2026-10-29 → 2026-11-07 (10 days, 9 observations). Google's detail page only refreshes install counts every other day, so a flat day doesn't mean nobody installed.

A small Indian developer with a Delhi metro app at 1.4M installs reused the same template with Riyadh data and added Urdu, launching in Oct 18. Three weeks later it ranked #3 on Saudi Play for "riyadh metro," with 694 installs. What's worth learning is the playbook, not its results. And a dozen identical apps are already crowding the Riyadh route.

### A queue complaint

On 2026 year Jul 30, a user named Umar Amin left a review on the Google Play page of darb, Riyadh's official bus app: "It logs me out every two minutes. The QR code takes about 20 seconds to load, and people queue up behind you waiting. So annoying... it has this many users and this many bad reviews, and I don't know why they haven't fixed it."

darb is the official app from the Royal Commission for Riyadh City (RCRC) for buying tickets, planning routes, and tracking buses in real time. It has 1M+ downloads on Play, a 2.6-star rating, and 5,620 reviews (Play page, 11-06). Another review from May says that tapping a button takes 15 seconds, and that "I actually use another app (Google Maps) to understand your bus routes."

The Riyadh Metro opened in December 2024, with 6 lines and 83 stations. In Q3 2026 it carried 30.4M riders in a single quarter (Asharq Al-Awsat, 10-21). With lots of people riding and the official app hard to use, third-party "metro guide" apps grew up in that gap.

### What it is

Riyadh Metro Train Map & Route, by developer AtomTech Studio, launched 2026-10-18. The first paragraph of its store listing says: "Line maps, route planning, fares, and operating hours in one app, working underground with no signal." Its features:

- Fastest or fewest-transfer route between any two stations, with an optional intermediate stop; shows standard and first-class fares, which direction to board, and where to transfer

- With GPS on, follows the train station by station, with an alarm and vibration before your transfer or stop

- Airport line in yellow, the station nearest each landmark (Masmak Fortress, National Museum, etc.), and the nearest station

- English, Arabic, and Urdu; in the Urdu interface, station names use the official Arabic spelling from the station signs

- No sign-up, fully offline, data updates automatically when connected; station data comes from RCRC's open data

It states clearly that it doesn't sell tickets and that you should buy them through the official darb app. Revenue comes from ads and a $3.69 in-app purchase; what the purchase actually unlocks is unverified.

### The numbers: small volume, and falling

| Date | Total installs | Saudi Arabia, Travel & Local, Free chart |
|---|---|---|
| 10-29 | 187 | 105 |
| 10-30 | 187 | #95 (best) |
| 11-03 | 577 | 198 |
| 11-06 | 694 | 192 |

Google Play data, 10-29 to 11-06. The install counts look like they jump in steps (about 190 at a time). That's because Play refreshes install counts in batches. In reality, a few dozen installs came in evenly each day, totaling 7 over 507 days, or about 70 a day. It only appeared in one store (Saudi Arabia) and one category chart, where its rank fell from 95 to 192, and the new-release boost is fading. The Play page shows 4.2 stars with very few ratings and no reviews.

### Where it came from: a playbook that already worked

AtomTech's flagship product is Delhi Metro Route Map, with 1.4M installs, still gaining 1,300 to 1,500 a day. Its best rank in India's Maps & Navigation Free chart was #71 (Google Play, 10-29 to 11-06). The Delhi version's selling points (shortest route, fewest transfers, nearest station in one tap, exits, progress between stations) map almost one-to-one onto the Riyadh version's feature list.

So the Riyadh version is the same codebase with the city data swapped out. The approach breaks down into five steps:

1. **Data comes from official open data,** and the store page states the source clearly, which reads as credible

2. **ASO on both fronts:** the title is all English keywords, "Riyadh Metro Train Map & Route", while the short description stuffs in "Riyadh Metro Guide" (the competitors' generic name) and Arabic "مترو الرياض"; the long description repeats long-tail terms like ticket prices, timings, airport and Darb card. Three weeks after launch it ranked #3 in Saudi search results, behind only the official darb and a two-year-old third-party app

3. **Pick a category with few players:** choose Travel & Local, not the crowded Maps & Navigation, where a few dozen installs a day can get you into the top 200 of the chart

4. **Bet on the workers' mother tongue for language:** Riyadh has a large South Asian labor population, and Urdu is rare among the category's apps

5. **Price by region:** the same in-app purchase is $1.12 in the Delhi version and $3.69 in the Riyadh version, roughly three times more

No sign of paid acquisition: the Meta and Google ad libraries show nothing for this package (though those libraries don't cover every product, so absence doesn't prove no spend). Searching "riyadh metro app" on TikTok turns up only the official app and darb tutorials, and nobody on X mentioned it in 30 to 60 days. Volume is basically store search plus the launch-period bump.

### Who it's competing with

Plenty. The top ten results for "riyadh metro" (11-06) on the Saudi Play store are almost all the same kind of thing:

| Product | Platform | Scale | Notes | |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| darb (official) | Android / iOS | 1M+ installs, 2.6 stars | Required to buy tickets | |
| Riyadh Metro Guide(Wm Dev) | Android | 37k installs, 4.7 stars, about +200 per week | 2024-12 listed, the third-party leader, completely free | |
| Riyadh Metro Guide Unofficial(Farouk Elsayed) | iOS | 1,882 ratings, 4.65 stars | Third-party leader on iOS; AtomTech has no iOS version | |
| Riyadh Metro Guide \ | Train Bus(MokhtarS) | Android | 1,000+ installs, 4.6 stars | Metro plus bus |
| ByteWise, Nomade Studio, Prasad, O.D Softing, RoarApps, Seqv | Android | Tens of installs to 1,000+ each | 2026 years 9, October and newer launches too | |
| riyadhmetro.org, riyadhmetro.fyi, etc. | Web | Not verified | No install needed; riyadhmetro.fyi also offers Urdu and 8 other languages | |
| Google Maps, Moovit | big tech | — | Indexed Riyadh Metro around the start of 2025 | |

A counterexample makes the point: RoarApps' Singapore metro app has 980k installs, while the same template in Riyadh has only 50 installs.

The key number is that **the third-party leader has been out for 23 months and has only 37k installs.** The metro carries 30 million riders a quarter, and most of them are absorbed by two things: darb, which is required for tickets, and Google Maps, already on everyone's phone. What's left for third-party offline guides is a thin slice.

### It has more features. Does that matter?

Compared with its peers, it does have the most features: GPS-based next-stop alerts, fare breakdown by class, boarding direction, airport, attractions, offline use, Urdu. But there's no sign these differences are driving downloads. Wm Dev has only basic features and has stayed ahead of it, thanks to two years of accumulated installs and 4.7 stars. In a store, extra features are just a checklist; without reviews or word of mouth, they don't spread.

### If it were you

**Verdict: C.** Copying this for Riyadh isn't worth it: a dozen-plus players are competing, the leader has 37k installs after two years, and the official app and Google Maps cap the ceiling. What's worth learning is the playbook, provided you pick a different city.

**Who it suits** : 1 individuals who already have a transit-template (or are willing to spend two or three weeks building one), are good at ASO, and speak the mother tongue of an immigrant or migrant-worker group. Anyone counting on earning from a single city is not a fit.

**Who it doesn't suit:** anyone hoping to overtake incumbents by building "better features" in crowded cities like Riyadh, Singapore or Dubai, or in cities where the official app works well or Google Maps coverage is complete.

**How to do it:** choosing the city matters more than building the app. Screen on three criteria: the official app is hard to use or absent, there are many outsiders and tourists, and Google Maps' public transit data is incomplete. Delhi reached a million; Riyadh's third-party leader is at 37k after two years, and the difference seems to come down to these three criteria (inference). Once you've found a city, use official open data, reuse one codebase across several cities, add the mother tongue of the largest foreign community there, and price in-app purchases to local purchasing power.

**How to get users:** store search. Put the main English keyword in the title, the main local-language keyword in the short description, and tack on the competitors' generic name; choose a category with a lower bar to chart. The few weeks after a new line opens are the only window, so list before the opening.

**Timing:** there's no fixed deadline. The window follows each city's new-line opening date, and similar apps tend to appear within a few months of opening, as Riyadh shows.

**Signs you've got this wrong:** ① this app's daily installs climb to a few hundred a day a month from now and it returns to the top 100 of the chart, which would mean Riyadh's third-party space is bigger than it looks; ② AtomTech keeps rolling out to Jeddah, Doha and Dubai and the new cities also gain traction, which would show the template replicates across cities and the rating should go up; ③ darb undergoes a major overhaul and its rating climbs back above 4 stars, or Google Maps fills in offline coverage locally, and this gap closes.

Where users come from

- **Verified** **Play Store search ASO** : searching "riyadh metro" on the Saudi Play Store ranks #3 (behind darb and Wm Dev); the title is packed with keywords, and the short description covers both 'Riyadh Metro Guide' and 'مترو الرياض'

- **Verified** **New-release boost + low-bar category chart** : picked TRAVEL_AND_LOCAL instead of the crowded MAPS; best Saudi Travel Top Free rank was #10-30 at 95, then it fell to #192

- Inferred **Urdu targets South Asian laborers** : the description highlights Urdu RTL plus official Arabic station names; no data on download contribution

- Inferred **Paid acquisition** : no records in the metaads/googleads libraries (they only track a watchlist), and no relevant TikTok ads content

- Inferred **Traffic from the older Delhi Metro app** : the user regions don't overlap, the website only links Delhi, and no cross-promotion was found

## Riyadh Metro Train Map & Route (AtomTech Studio) research report

- Package: com.riyadhmetro.atomtech | Google Play, TRAVEL_AND_LOCAL | Store launch 2026-10-18, version 1.1.5 (2026-10-20 update)

- In one line: offline train map for the Riyadh Metro (6 lines / 83 stations) + transfer route planning + fares and operating hours + GPS arrival alerts; English / Arabic / Urdu, ad-supported, in-app purchase $3.69.

- Verdict: **It isn't breaking out yet.** This is an Indian indie dev who already had 1.4M installs from the Delhi Metro App. They took a proven "offline city metro guide" template, swapped in Riyadh, added Urdu, and let Play Store search do the rest. Three weeks in: 694 installs, about 70 a day, and the Saudi travel free chart slid from 95 to 192. The real takeaway is the playbook (old template + new city + ASO + new language), not this app's numbers. Also, the Riyadh niche already has seven or eight similar apps competing for the same searches.

### 1. Data (our googleplay library, 2026-10-29 ~ 11-06)

| Date | Total installs | Daily increase | Saudi TRAVEL_AND_LOCAL Top Free chart |
|---|---|---|---|
| 10-29 | 187 | – | 105 |
| 10-30 | 187 | 0 | #95 (best) |
| 10-31 | 381 | 194 | 107 |
| 11-01 | 381 | 0 | 124 |
| 11-02 | 381 | 0 | 160 |
| 11-03 | 577 | 196 | 198 |
| 11-05 | 595 | 18 | 126 |
| 11-06 | 694 | 99 | 192 |

- +7 in 507 days, averaging about 70 a day. Each jump shows up as ~190 at a time because the Play listing refreshes its install count in batches. In reality it's a steady few dozen a day.

- Only charted in 1 of 1 Saudi storefront categories; rankings are sliding, which means the new-release boost from the first two weeks is fading.

- Rating: no value recorded; 11-06 used Jina to read the Saudi Play search page, which shows 4.2 stars (very few ratings). No review samples.

- Monetization: ad-supported (ad_supported=True) plus in-app purchases at $3.69 each. The same developer's Delhi version sells in-app items for $1.12, so the Riyadh version is priced about 3× higher, reflecting Gulf purchasing power.

- Ad libraries: this package appears in neither metaads' app_link nor googleads' adv_map, and neither does the Delhi version (these libraries only track listed products, so absence doesn't mean no ads).

### 2. Developer: who is AtomTech Studio

- The main app under the same developer_id (6198302669601833079) is **Delhi Metro Route Map** (com.metrowaydelhi.app): 1,405,391 installs in the library, grew about 12,400 from 10-29 to 11-06 (1,300~1,500 a day), best India MAPS_AND_NAVIGATION Top Free rank #71; also ad-supported with in-app purchases, Play page reads "1M+ Downloads", last updated 2026-10-23 (Jina read of the Play page).

- The website atomtechstudio.com (Google Sites) only lists the Delhi Metro app; contact email studio.atomtech@gmail.com. The Play developer page also lists Fingertips Draw, White Screen and Play Piano (100k+, no update since 2024-01); the developer website is stardotstudios.com.

- The data card's line "Play Piano has about 219k installs" can't be verified in our library: we only track 2 apps from this developer, totaling 1,406,085 = Delhi + Riyadh. The Play page shows Play Piano at 100K+.

- The Delhi version's selling points (shortest route / fewest transfers, one-tap navigation to the nearest station, exits, station-to-station progress) map almost one-to-one onto the Riyadh version's features (fastest / fewest transfers, nearest station, trip tracking, arrival alerts). So the Riyadh app is **the same metro template with new city data** , sourced from the Royal Commission for Riyadh City (RCRC) open data (credited in the description).

### 3. Competitors: who else does the same thing

**Official**

- **darb | درب** (official RCRC app, com.rcrc.riyadhjourneyplanner): 1M+ Android downloads, **2.6 stars / 5.62K reviews** ; on iOS, 2023-03 listing, 3,565 ratings, 2.67 stars (iTunes lookup). Lets you buy tickets, plan routes and track trains in real time, but the ratings are poor. Third-party apps find their room here: the official app is poorly rated, requires sign-up and leans toward ticket purchases.

- Google Maps and Moovit already cover the Riyadh Metro lines (a TikTok video by 2025-01 titled "metro lines finally on Google Maps" has 48k views). These are ready-made features from the big players.

**Third-party on Android** (order of results for "riyadh metro" on the Saudi Play Store, read by 11-06 using Jina)

1. darb (official)

2. **Riyadh Metro Guide** (Wm Dev Technology, listed 2024-12-11): 37,270 installs in the library, about +200 a week, ranked 129~166,4.7 on the Saudi Maps & Navigation Top Free chart, fully free + ads. It's the leader among third-party apps, but took 23 months to reach 37k.

3. **This app** (AtomTech, ranked #3 within 3 weeks of launch, showing solid ASO)

4. Riyadh Metro Route Finder (Prasad IT Solution): 100+, updated 2026-10-18

5. Riyadh Metro Guide & Route Map (ByteWise / gulfcommute): 1K+, updated 2025-12; the same company also runs gulfcommute.com and Riyadh Bus Route

6. Riyadh Metro Guide & Route Map (Nomade Studio): new, trilingual in English / Arabic / French, 45+ attractions

7. Unofficial Riyadh Metro Guide (RoarApps): 50+, updated 2026-10-04. RoarApps' Singapore MRT app has 980k installs, but this template didn't take off in Riyadh

8. Riyadh Metro Map (Seqv / savecorp): no update in 2023 years, 18 reviews

9. Riyadh Metro Map & Routes (O.D Softing): 100+, updated 2026-09; the same developer's Bangkok version has 2,140 installs

10. Riyadh Metro Guide | Train Bus (MokhtarS): 1K+, 4.6 stars, also covers buses; the same person has Saudi Metro - Riyadh Transit on iOS (2026-04 listing, 21 ratings)

**iOS** (iTunes lookup, sa storefront)

- Riyadh Metro Guide Unofficial (Farouk Elsayed, 2025-01): **1,882 ratings, 4.65 stars** , the strongest third-party app on iOS

- Riyadh metro | قطار الرياض (Marat Safutdinov, 2025-05): 44 ratings

- Riyadh Metro Route & Guide (Muhammed Rifat Hossain) and several others

- AtomTech has no Riyadh app on iOS

**Web**

- riyadhmetro.org (independent site, launched 2026-04, with route planning, monetized through ads), riyadhmetro.fyi (8 languages including Urdu / Hindi / Bengali / Filipino, no install needed), ksa.co, riyadhmetroguide.com (Arabic), gulfcommute.com. On Reddit r/Riyadh someone posted "I made a free Riyadh Metro route planner (all 6 lines, 8 languages)" (post 403; content not read).

**Conclusion** : the data card says "similar competitors are almost nonexistent, and the Android side is nearly empty", which **doesn't hold** . Android alone has at least 9 similar apps, and new ones keep appearing through 2026 9~October (Nomade, Prasad, O.D Softing). But each is small: the top third-party app has 37k installs, and the top iOS app has under 2 thousand ratings. Nobody has scaled this yet.

### 4. Demand and timing

- The Riyadh Metro opened in 2024-12; 2026-03 cumulative 200M rides (RCRC 2026-03-14 announcement); 2026 Q3 alone saw 30.4M rides (Asharq Al-Awsat / Argaam, 2026-10-20~21). Ridership is huge, and much of it is foreign laborers, many from South Asia, who speak Urdu.

- But this isn't a fresh-launch window: the metro has been open for nearly two years, and no new line opened in October. This app launched in October, coinciding only with Riyadh Season and the winter tourist season, plus Q10-20 ridership news around 3; there's no evidence any of that drove downloads.

- Dozens of installs a day is far from the scale of 30M rides a quarter. The bulk of real demand is captured by darb (required to buy tickets) and Google Maps; third-party offline guides are a very thin long tail.

### 5. Where users come from (growth tactics)

| Channel | Evidence | Confirmed? |
|---|---|---|
| Play Store search (ASO) | On the Saudi Play Store, searching "riyadh metro" ranks #3, behind only the official darb and Wm Dev; the title is stuffed with keywords, "Riyadh Metro Train Map & Route"; the short description reads "Riyadh Metro Guide مترو الرياض: route planner, fare, timings, offline", covering both the English competitor name and Arabic keywords; the long description repeats long-tail terms like ticket prices / timings / airport / Darb card | Yes (main channel) |
| New-release boost + low-bar category chart | Chose TRAVEL_AND_LOCAL over the crowded MAPS_AND_NAVIGATION. A few dozen installs a day was enough to reach #100~200 on the Saudi Travel Top Free chart, peaking at #95 in the first two weeks after launch, then sliding steadily | Yes |
| Language coverage (Urdu) | Rare among Android competitors: the description highlights right-to-left Urdu display and uses the official Arabic station names from signage. Aimed at Pakistani laborers | Confirmed at the product level; contribution to downloads unverified |
| Cross-promotion from the older app | The Delhi version gets 1,300+ installs a day, but its users are in India, which doesn't overlap with Riyadh; the website only links Delhi; no evidence of cross-promotion found | No |
| Paid acquisition | Not in the metaads or googleads libraries; a TikTok search for "riyadh metro app" only returns the official riyadh_transport and darb tutorials, with nothing from this app | Not found (library coverage incomplete) |
| X / Reddit / press | An x-radar search for "riyadh metro app" and "AtomTech" returned 0 posts over 30~60 days; no media coverage | Not found |

### 6. Differentiation

Compared with competitors, what sets it apart:

1. **Most complete feature set** : route planning + add-a-stop mid-route + first-class / standard fares + boarding direction + GPS train tracking and transfer / arrival vibration alerts + airport line + attraction-to-station lookup + fully offline + auto-updating data over the network. Most competitors only offer a map and routes.

2. **Urdu** : Android competitors mostly offer only English and Arabic (Nomade has French); the web app riyadhmetro.fyi also has Urdu.

3. **Inherits the interaction design from the Delhi version, polished over years** (boarding direction, transfer hints, nearest station).

Are these differences why it's getting traction? **Doesn't look like it.** The little traction it has comes mainly from ASO and the new-release bump. Even with more features, in the store it's just a feature list: no reviews, no evidence of word of mouth. Wm Dev has only basic features but has consistently ranked above it, thanks to two years of accumulated installs and 4.7 stars.

### 7. How many people have seen it

Nobody knows about it yet. Revenue isn't public, no media coverage, nobody mentions it on X; no competitor has scaled, so there's no clear copycat story. The whole "third-party Riyadh Metro guide" category has had lots of players since late 2024, but they're all parallel copies of the same template, with none specifically following this one.

### 8. What's worth borrowing

- The play: **one metro-guide template, rolled out to newly opened metro systems and cities with large expat populations** . The Delhi version shows the template can reach a million-scale audience in a big city. Copying it is cheap: open data + translate + swap keywords.

- ASO: English as the primary title keyword, Arabic as the primary short-description keyword, and a competitor's generic name tacked on ("Riyadh Metro Guide"). Category choice: a low-barrier chart (Travel, not Maps & Navigation).

- Regional pricing: the same in-app purchase at $3.69 in the Gulf and $1.12 in India.

- The language bet is on the migrant-worker community's native tongue (Urdu), not just local language plus English.

- Lesson on the downside: **a city metro guide's ceiling depends on how bad the official app is and how many expats or tourists need it.** Riyadh's official darb app is poorly rated, but ticket purchase requires it; add Google Maps coverage, and third-party guides have peaked at 37k in two years. To pick a city, look for "no good official app + lots of visitors + weak Google Maps coverage" (which is why Delhi could reach a million).

### 9. Still unclear

- What the in-app purchase actually sells (ad removal? premium features?) and whether anyone buys it: unverified.

- Whether it runs small campaigns on Google Ads (UAC): our ad library doesn't cover this package.

- The actual share of Urdu-speaking users.

- Whether it will keep expanding to other Gulf cities (Jeddah, Doha, Dubai); so far the developer's only new city is Riyadh.

- The data card says "the same developer previously had Delhi Metro": it's not "previously." The Delhi version is under the same developer account right now and is still the main product (the Play page shows 2026-10-23 updates).
