# A chick in goggles squeezed into the gap between Tinder and Hinge in three weeks: Rocco and the "coin chat" dating front

**What it is** A "nearby dating" app with a chick as its mascot. Messaging and video calls cost coins; it mainly targets the US.

**Why it took off** It runs Facebook and TikTok ads pitching "free, nearby, real people," and within a week or two of ~20–30K installs it broke into the top 3 of the US dating category, which has a low barrier to entry, then used the chart position to pull in organic installs. The "women" who reply instantly make people willing to pay, but many reviews say they're AI.

**C** **How you could approach it** Don't copy the coins-plus-AI-posing-as-real-people model. It was publicly exposed two months ago, and platforms are watching. What's worth taking is the distribution method: pick a dating-category chart that big players hold but which adds few new installs each week, concentrate paid acquisition to push into the top five, and use the chart to earn organic installs. If you want this need, say openly that it's AI companionship, or build a video chat with real hosts and transparent pricing.

Grade C: The way they climb category charts is useful and worth copying. But the core money-maker is hiding from users that they're talking to AI, and that play 2026-09 has already been publicly exposed and reported to Apple and Google, so it could get pulled any time. The compliant version means going head-to-head with AI companion and established 1v1 video companies, which isn't a great bet. Hardly anyone knows about it yet

Rocco launched as a dating app in Oct 13, and by Nov 6 it was ranked #3 on the US Google Play dating free chart, between Tinder and Hinge, with Bumble just behind. Its product is nothing special. Its traction comes from an old playbook: male users buy coins to chat, the "women" reply instantly, call proactively, and contact details can't be exchanged. Below: why this chart is easy to climb, how the money comes in, and why the most profitable part of this business is the part you shouldn't copy.

### A man who drove an hour

In Oct 29, a 1-star review on Rocco's Google Play page read: "I talked to this (woman) for a whole week. She agreed to meet, and we got along well. She lives an hour's drive away, so I thought I'd be considerate and suggested meeting near her place. I drove all that way, got to the agreed place at the agreed time, and only got a pile of excuses. First she said she was late, then..." The review cuts off there.

Another review the same day was more blunt: "Honestly, you download this app because everything else doesn't work, and then you see a new one suddenly blow up, right? I think this is an experiment with AI. I used it for three hours straight..."

These two reviews pretty much sum up Rocco: a group of American men who hadn't found anything on Tinder, pulled in by an ad reading "free, single people nearby, real people," where someone replies warmly right away and a top-up prompt appears once the chat gets going.

### What it is

The store page says "Meet people nearby and find your spark. Let Rocco take flight," and the mascot is "a little pilot chick in blue goggles with a spinning propeller on its head." The features are the usual ones: browse nearby people, like, say hi, match.

The real rules are in the reviews. According to dozens of reviews (10-26 to 10-31):

- The first few messages are free, then "after 5 minutes of chatting, it starts asking for money";

- Messages cost coins, and video "costs 150 coins a minute, so two minutes eats most of your coins";

- Chat filters Instagram, Snapchat and phone numbers: "mention any name outside the app and you're blocked, but the coins still get charged";

- Several people say they can't see the other person's photos;

- In-app purchases range from $3.99 to $99.99, plus subscriptions.

### Why it reached the gap between Tinder and Hinge in three weeks

Because the US Google Play dating category chart ranks by recent new installs, not total volume, and the barrier is much lower than most people think.

Same-day charts for 11-06: #2 Hinge added about 250k installs in a week, #4 Bumble about 400k, and Rocco, sandwiched in at #3, added only 28k (Google Play installs, 10-29 to 11-05). So a new app that steadily brings in two to three thousand installs a day can crack the top five of the US dating Top Free chart.

Rocco's installs climbed in steps: 10-29 went from 6,670,10-31 to 14,147,11-03 to 28,637,11-05 to 35,131. Since 10-29 it has been in the free chart's top 3,10-31 every day, and was #1 for a full day. Sitting next to Tinder drives downloads on its own. That's what the earlier review meant by "seeing a new one suddenly blow up."

There are paying users too. It also ranked #15–21 on the US dating Top Grossing chart and made the top 30 of the dating Top Grossing charts in more than a dozen countries, including Nigeria, Saudi Arabia, Malaysia, Vietnam, India, the UAE, Indonesia, Thailand, the Philippines, South Africa, Argentina and Poland (11-06).

### Where users come from

**Facebook ads, and they're numbered.** There are two Facebook pages, one called "Rocco 01" and one called "Rocco 02", both categorized as "Social Media Agency". Going by the page IDs, both were created in October. The ads are vertical short-drama-style videos with the title "meet Real Women & Date" and the caption "Be with someone who \"gets\" it and gets you". One of them has 21K views on 11-06. Another caption reads "Dating in your town" and has 6,100 views. One ad line says, "I deleted all the other dating apps... this one actually works." The page names carry numbers, which suggests a set of pages behind it, so when one gets banned there's another ready to go (inference)."

**TikTok ads, in the users' own words.** A review of 10-29: "The TikTok ad said it's free." A review of 10-31: "The ad says the girls here like video chat, to prove they're real people." TikTok search turns up no organic or creator videos about it, so users only ever see the ads.

**Organic traffic from the charts (inferred).** Paid acquisition pushes it into the top 3, and the top 3 spots then bring in organic downloads.

**It asks for a rating right on launch.** Reviews say things like "asked me to rate it the moment I opened it, feels like a fake app" and "won't let me use it until I rate it." Ratings are steady at 80–110 a day, about 3% of installs, which is high for dating apps. The earliest 5-star reviews are short ones like "good", "ok", "so far so good". The 11-06 store page shows 4.0 stars from 1,070 ratings, and under 1 stars make up less than a fifth of them.

Beyond that, there's nothing: no media coverage, nobody has mentioned it on X in nearly 30 days, no Reddit discussion, and the website is a single privacy policy page.

### Who's on the other side

Across 1-star reviews, a few complaints keep recurring: the other side "replies within 24 minutes, as if they never sleep"; "every message is the same template"; and people start asking "will you be my boyfriend?" before the profile is even finished. One female user wrote: "I hadn't finished setting up my profile and a bunch of women were already matching with me, wanting me to be their boyfriend. The problem is, I'm a woman." Another: "Read the description carefully. This is that scam app with a new name, where you chat with AI characters but they claim to be real people."

This claim has a source. In September 2026, Anthropic published a threat intelligence report (picked up by Yahoo, CNA, The Verge and others) exposing a network of more than 20 dating personas, with names like Romi, Kira, Nalo, Dora and Luma. The pattern: roughly three-quarters of the "people" were AI characters, and the rest were per-task freelance real people paid to handle video calls and to follow up on social accounts. Over two weeks, 4,700 AI characters sent 25M messages to 2.36k users. A clean version was submitted for store review. Those accounts were later banned, and Apple and Google were notified.

Rocco launched a month after that report, and its mechanics are nearly identical. Whether it's the same operation can't be verified from outside, and neither can how many of its "women" are AI. What's clear is how users experience it: "This is an AI chat app, not a dating app."

### Where the money comes from, roughly

The third-party estimator AppGazers puts Rocco's Google Play in-app purchase revenue at $29k to $139k over the last ~30 days (model estimate, as of early November). Based on about 35k installs for the month, if a few out of every 100 installers pay $10–40, a few dollars of US paid-acquisition cost per install can be recovered (estimate). Being listed in the top grossing charts across more than a dozen countries at once also suggests a meaningful number of people are paying.

### A new app every week

The developer behind Rocco is Silver State, with a Gmail contact. Rocco (chick) launched in Oct 13, Waffle (cat, "the cat has them all") in Oct 20, and Luka (pet) in Oct 26. Each of the three apps has its own new domain with only a privacy policy page: roccovo.com, inwaffle.com, lukaluv.com.

Waffle has already followed: 10-30 had only 5 installs when it launched, and by 11-06 it reached 14,889, ranking #5 on the US dating free chart. Luka had 11-05 installs by 331. AppGazers estimates the developer's three apps together bring in $53k to $266k a month.

A mascot's only job is to make the same app look like a different one after a reskin. When one package gets bad reviews or gets pulled, the next one is already charting.

### Who it's competing with

| Name | Scale | How it differs from Rocco |
|---|---|---|
| Tinder / Hinge / Bumble | Installs 530M / 41M / 130M, US store Free dating chart #1, #2, #4 | Real two-sided people, subscription unlocks, free messages. Rocco is catching the users these apps lose. |
| Romi, Kira, Nalo and 20 more skins | 25k users and 2.36M messages in two weeks | Same mechanics. 2026-09 got exposed and banned. |
| Waffle, Luka (same developer) | 15k / 331 installs | Same playbook with a new mascot |
| Emma: Meet & Bloom, Dash, Slip | 14k / 10k / 44k installs | A coin-chat clone from 2026 summer, charting only in the back of the UK and Australia dating charts. Far smaller than Rocco in both volume and rank. |
| MeetWave, XVXX, ZonaMatch, Umengle and other 1v1 video apps | 50k–570k installs | Also charges per minute for video, but doesn't pose as dating. Targets India, Southeast Asia, Latin America and the Middle East. |
| Klim(MICO) | 1.01M installs | An old overseas social company with a real host system. Long-running and large. |

### If it were you

**In one line:** Don't copy it. Its biggest earner is passing AI off as real people, and that playbook was publicly exposed two months ago. Google and Apple are watching. What's worth learning is how it climbs category charts.

**Who it's for:** Small teams that buy paid installs on Meta or TikTok and have an app that actually keeps people. It also proves one thing: on the US Google Play, many category charts reach the top five with 20,000 to 30,000 weekly installs.

**Who it's not for:** Anyone building "nearby dating" (Tinder and co. control real supply, and you don't have it). Anyone copying coin-plus-AI-persona (accounts, developer IDs and payment channels can all disappear at once, and reviews warn daily that it's a scam).

**How to do it:** If you must touch this need, build the compliant version. One option is to say plainly it's AI companionship, charge per message or per minute, and don't filter contact info, since there's no real person to hold onto anyway. The other is real hosts with transparent pricing for 1v1 video, but older companies like MICO have been doing that for years. The more useful thing to take is the distribution method: pick a category chart where big players hold the top but weekly new installs are modest, use one to two weeks of concentrated paid acquisition to push a new package into the top five, then ride chart exposure for organic installs. Trigger the rating prompt early so the rating count builds up.

**How to acquire users:** Like Rocco, use vertical short-drama-style ads, with a one-line hook that names the pain ("deleted all my other apps"). Prepare several profile pages and rotate several packages. None of this breaks a rule.

**When is the window:** The low bar on category charts is always available, so there's no rush. For the coin-chat-with-fake-accounts route, the window depends on when Google acts on Silver State. A similar operation was already reported in September.

**What would mean you read it wrong:** (1) Rocco and Waffle are still charting in December and Silver State keeps releasing new packages every week. That means the platform isn't enforcing, and this gray route lasts longer than it looks. (2) A dating or companion app that openly says it's AI climbs into the top ten of the US dating chart with the same acquisition method and reaches the top grossing chart. That means the compliant version also works and is worth doing properly. (3) The reverse: if three packages are pulled within a month, this route is closed, and only the category-chart method is left.

- **Verified** **Meta (Facebook/Instagram) ads, Page matrix** : Facebook ad pages "Rocco 01" (61594903640393) and "Rocco 02" (61594743567182), category Social media agency, both created in October; short-drama-style video ads "I deleted all my other dating apps… this one worked" and "Singles nearby", one of which 10-22 posted has 6.1K views

- Inferred **TikTok ads** : a 10-29 review of 1 says: "the advertisement on tick tock said that it was free"; 10-31's reviews mention ads claiming women love videos. The tiktokads library (EU-only) status is unconfirmed

- **Verified** **organic store chart rank** : US Play DATING Top Free holds #1–3 day after day from 10-29 to 11-06 (10-31 at #1), with 28k installs a week, sitting between Hinge and Bumble

## Why Rocco (com.roccoko.app) took off

### Bottom line

Rocco's product is no different from other dating apps. It took off because a proven coin-chat monetization model met paid acquisition and store chart mechanics. The model: men buy coins to send messages and video; "women" reply instantly and start video calls; contact info is blocked, so conversations never leave the app. In practice:

- Numbered Facebook ad pages ("Rocco 01 / 02") and TikTok ads promise "free, singles nearby, real people";

- It pushes to #1–3 on the US Google Play DATING Top Free chart (a low bar: a thousand or two installs a day is enough), then rides chart exposure for organic installs;

- The rating prompt fires as soon as you open the app, inflating the rating count.

The same developer, Silver State, released Rocco, Waffle and Luka in 10-13, 10-20 and 10-26, three nearly identical dating apps (all with cute pet mascot skins). This matches the playbook Anthropic exposed in September 2026, followed by a 20+ dating app network that was banned. That network used AI personas to pose as real people, charged in coins, and showed reviewers a clean version. Whether it's the same team has not been verified.

### Data (Google Play library, 2026-10-29 to 11-06)

- The store listing date is 2026-10-13 (released in the database, not reset).

- Cumulative global installs: 10-29 went from 6,670,10-31 to 14,147,11-03 to 28,637,11-05 to 35,131. Over 8 days it gained about 28k, roughly 3,500 a day. The installs_gain_7d on the card is 28,461.

- Ratings: 10-29 went from 342,11-06 to 1,045, adding 70–110 a day. The rating count is about 3% of installs, high for dating. Reviews say "asks me to rate it as soon as I open it" and "won't let me use it without rating," which are forced or prompted rating popups.

- Rating dropped to 4.03 3.88. The distribution is: 11-06 1-star 171, 2-star 55, 3-star 132, 4-star 49, 5-star 635. There's an anomaly between 11-05 and 11-06: the 1-star count dropped from 181 to 171,4, and the 102-star count dropped from 49,5 while the 532-star count rose to 635. Google may have recalculated or removed some reviews. The cause is unverified.

- US Google Play DATING Top Free chart: since 10-29 it has held #1–3 daily (10-31 at #1; 11-06 at #3, behind Tinder and Hinge, ahead of Bumble). US DATING Top Grossing chart: #15–21. It's on 20 charts every day: the Top Paid charts in Nigeria, Saudi Arabia, Malaysia, Vietnam, India, the UAE, Indonesia, Hong Kong, Thailand, the Philippines, South Africa, Argentina, Poland and more, all ranked #13–31.

- In-app purchases range from $3.99–$99.99, tagged as containing ads (ad_supported=True). Version 1.2.0 was used until 11-04, followed by a rapid run of 1.2.x releases.

- The same developer Silver State's other apps (developer_id = Silver+State in the database):
    - Waffle — the cat has them all (com.prism.waffle): launched 10-20, 10-30 installs from 5,11-06 to 14,889; 11-06 US store DATING Top Free #5.
    - Luka (com.lukapet.app): listed 10-26, 11-05 installs 331, best US DATING Top Free rank #23.
    - Contact email silverdata15688@gmail.com, shared by Rocco and Luka. Each app has its own disposable privacy-policy domain: roccovo.com, inwaffle.com, lukaluv.com (lukaluv.com's privacy policy says it took effect 2026-10-21).

- Third-party estimates: AppGazers puts Rocco's Play in-app revenue at $30K–$29.1K over the last 139.2 days, Waffle at $23.4K–$112.1K, and Silver State combined at $52.5K–$266.3K. AppGazers also shows a Tools app and an Entertainment app under this developer, likely older account apps or used for account warming. (https://appgazers.com/reports/developers/android-Silver+State, model estimate)

- The bar on the US DATING Top Free chart is low: #3 Rocco had 28k weekly installs, #2 Hinge had 250k, #4 Bumble had 400k (same day, v_chart). Play's category charts reward momentum, not the existing base, so a new app with two or three thousand daily installs can squeeze into the top five.

### Where users come from

1. **Meta ads (confirmed)** : Facebook has numbered ad pages "Rocco 01" (page 61594903640393) and "Rocco 02" (page 61594743567182), both categorized as "Social media agency." Going by the page IDs, they were created in October 2026. They run short-drama-style vertical video with lines like "I deleted all my other dating apps… this one worked" and "Meet real women," with captions "Dating in your town💞" and "Singles nearby." One post published on 10-22 has 6.1K views. (facebook.com/61594903640393/videos/…/914737898243612 etc.) Our metaads library didn't track these two Pages: it finds advertisers by keywords from the tools category, and dating isn't on that list. The numbered naming suggests a multi-Page matrix strategy.

2. **TikTok ads (no ad library evidence, per user reviews):** 10-29 One 1-star review says "the advertisement on tick tock said that it was free… 5 minutes into talking… asking you for money". 10-31 Another says "ads saying women on here love to talk on video to show they are real". The tiktokads library lists Rocco's status as unconfirmed, and that library only covers ads shown in Europe, while Rocco runs mainly in the US, so no hit there doesn't mean no ads. A TikHub search for "rocco dating app" returns no organic or creator content.

3. **Store chart organic traffic (inferred):** The US Top Free DATING chart has held #9 for 3 days in a row. A user review says it plainly: "You only tried this app because all the other ones arent working and you saw something new that gained traction fast".

4. **Forced ratings** : the rating prompt pops up shortly after you open the app, and some users say you can't keep using it without rating. In the early period, many of the 5-star reviews are short phrases like "good", "ok", "so far so good". The rating count is out of step with installs (installs jump in steps, while rating count rises a steady +80 per day).

5. **None** : no press coverage, no X discussion (x-radar shows 30 posts in the last 0 days), no Reddit threads, no creator partnerships, no SEO sites (each domain has only a privacy policy page).

### Where the money comes from

Coins are charged per message and per minute. Reviews mention "video 150 coins/min", "you need coins to send messages", "if the chat cuts off halfway you have to top up". In-app purchases run $3.99–$99.99, plus a subscription ("doesn't tell u have to pay top dollar to subscribe"). The chat filters out contact info such as Instagram, Snapchat and phone numbers, so users stay locked inside the app and keep paying.

Reviews repeatedly point to: "women" replying instantly, online 24 hours a day, templated wording, people asking to be your boyfriend before you've finished filling out your profile (one female user says she is a woman and still got a flood of "girl" advances), no way to see the other person's photo, and "mostly AI". This matches the model Anthropic described: about 75% are AI personas and 25% are paid-per-message human "gig" workers who take video calls and follow back social accounts.

ROI estimate: a US dating install from paid acquisition typically costs a few dollars (industry rule of thumb, not verified here). AppGazers estimates Rocco's monthly revenue at $30k to $140k against about 35k installs. It only needs a few out of every 100 installers to pay $10–$40 to break even. The Top Grossing chart also places it at #15–21 in the US and in the top 30 across a dozen countries, so people are clearly paying.

### Competitors

| Name | Where | Launched | Scale | How it differs from Rocco |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Tinder / Hinge / Bumble | Android+iOS | 2012–2014 | 530M / 41M / 130M installs, US Top Free DATING #1/2/4 | A real-human two-sided marketplace with subscription-unlocked features and free messaging. Rocco takes users who churn from these by offering "free + someone replies right away". |
| Romi, Kira, Nalo, Dora, Doni, Luma, Jovia, Gracechat, Haven, Lovia and 20+ other variants | Android+iOS | first half of 2026 | Anthropic counted 4,700 AI personas, 25k users and 2.36M messages over two weeks. Kira and Nalo list Midland Apps Inc on Google Play. | 2026-09 was exposed by Anthropic and had its model cut off, and Apple and Google were notified. Rocco's mechanism is nearly identical and appeared a month after that exposure. One 1-star review says outright "same deceptive app (rebranded)". Whether it's the same team is unverified. |
| Waffle, Luka (same developer, Silver State) | Android | 2026-10-20 / 10-26 | 15k / 331 installs | The same product in a different mascot skin (cat / pet), which is its own shell-app network |
| Emma: Meet & Bloom, Dash, Slip: Meet & Date Real Locals | Android | 2026-06 to 08 | 14k / 10k / 44k installs, only low in the UK and Australia DATING Top Free charts | Similar products targeting Europe and the US, from Gmail-registered developers, that look like the coin-chat model, but with far smaller scale and chart positions than Rocco |
| MeetWave, Talkora, the XVXX series, ZonaMatch, Umengle and other 1v1 video chats | Android | 2026 years | 50k–570k installs, targeting India, Southeast Asia, Latin America and the Middle East | A same-model paid-per-minute video service, but it doesn't dress up as dating. Rocco packages it as legitimate local dating and targets the US. |
| Klim(MICO PS) | Android | 2025-09 | 1.01M installs | A veteran going-global social company's swipe dating plus coins, with a real host system, large scale and long survival |
| Facebook Dating | Big-company features | 2019 | Built into Facebook | Free, real people. Rocco's paid acquisition runs on Facebook. |

### Differentiation

Almost no product differentiation. The description is standard "nearby, swipe, say hi"; the only "feature" is a chick mascot with goggles and a propeller on its head, which just makes the shell apps look different from each other (Waffle uses a cat, Luka a pet). Its real difference from Tinder is on the supply side: someone is always "there", replying instantly and starting video calls. These people are AI plus paid gig workers, charged by coins. This "instant response" experience, combined with "free" ads, is why it can turn US traffic into money, and also the source of many 1-star reviews (paywall, bots). So the differentiation is real and is why it's taking off, but it rests on not disclosing AI, which carries account-ban and delisting risk.

### Visibility

Rocco itself is still little known. No press coverage, 0 posts on X, no Reddit discussion, no disclosed revenue; only estimate sites like AppGazers and Similarweb index it. But the playbook of "coin chat + a dating shell-app network where AI personas pass as real people" has been widely reported: Anthropic's threat intelligence report from 2026 September, and the retellings by Yahoo/Techlicious, CNA, Digital Trends, The Verge and Money.com. Apple and Google have been notified.

### What to borrow

- The niche Google Play US category chart (DATING) has a low bar: a couple hundred thousand installs a week can rank you between Tinder and Hinge, and it can also reach the top 30 of several countries' Top Grossing category charts. Trading category-chart position for organic traffic is high value for the cost.

- Multiple shell apps, multiple mascot skins, a new package every week, plus a matrix of numbered Meta ad pages: if one package gets banned or gets bad word of mouth, swap in the next.

- A forced rating prompt shown early, which props up the rating count and star average in the early period.

- But the core monetization relies on undisclosed AI personas, which is not worth copying; legal and platform risk is very high. A compliant version would disclose that it is AI companionship, or use real hosts with clearly stated pricing.

### Unknowns

- The relationship between Silver State and the team Anthropic exposed (Midland Apps Inc and others) is unverified.

- The share of AI personas is unverified; only user reviews and the similarity of mechanism are available.

- Whether it's listed on iOS was not found (App Store search turned up nothing with the same name and developer; unverified).

- How much was spent on paid acquisition and what the ROI is: no spend data available. AppGazers' revenue is a model estimate.

- Whether the unusual shifts in the 11-06 rating distribution are Google deleting reviews or recalculating is uncertain.

- How long it can survive before Google acts: similar networks have already been reported, 2026-09.
