> It sells the rigid need of "where can I legally dig", since wandering into a protected area can land you in court. Then it works group by group across Facebook metal-detecting groups in various countries, posting tracked links and trading a one-year membership for a pinned post by the group admin. Paired with 20,000 auto-generated search landing pages, it's built a small, steady pool of people who pay.

Metal Detecting Hub: Rodek · Neagoe Andrei

# One person, 2.56M forbidden zones: Rodek built a map of where you can legally dig for metal detectors

**What it is** An outdoor map app for metal detector hobbyists: protected-area boundary alerts, LiDAR and century-old historical maps overlaid, US landowner lookup, find logs and a team community, free plus subscription or one-time purchase.

**Why it's taking off** It sells the must-have of "where can I legally dig", since wandering into a protected area can mean a lawsuit. On top of that, it posts tracked links group by group into metal-detecting Facebook groups across countries, trades a one-year membership for a pinned post from the group admin, and backs it with twenty thousand auto-generated search landing pages, building a small, steady base of people who pay.

**B** **How you could follow it** Don't copy it head-on; copy the playbook. Find another hobby community that needs to check where's legal before heading out (fossil hunting, magnet fishing, foraging, camping), use government open data for offline boundary alerts, get pinned posts in their Facebook groups, and go free in the home country first before charging.

Grade B: the playbook is clear, very few people know about it, and there are no copycats, so it's worth a try. But the niche has a low ceiling (the largest peer has only about fifty thousand installs), and channel work has to be done by hand, one group at a time. Rodek's own growth slowed after October too, so whether the approach works in another hobby community still needs to be validated first. Few people know about it yet

A Romanian full-stack engineer in London built a map app for metal detector users after work. Three months after launch, it has only 6,640 installs on Google Play, yet it already sits on the App Store Navigation Top Grossing charts in the Netherlands, Poland and Latvia. There is no sign of paid acquisition and no press coverage. Three things are worth a look: a selling point that keeps you on the right side of the law, a Facebook group outreach method, and twenty thousand auto-generated search landing pages.

### A post with only 1 likes

On the morning of 10:38 Aug 2026 15, a post appeared in the Facebook group "Detectie metale Timisoara" (Timisoara metal detecting) in western Romania, written by the page "Rodek · Metal Detecting App". The first line reads:

> Pentru Romania aplicatia e gratuita — In Romania, the app is free.

The next two paragraphs are straightforward: tap "Detect" and the satellite view shows where you're standing, the terrain, roughly how many holes you'll need to dig, and the weather for the next three hours, with a rain alert if needed; "it also warns you when you get near a protected area, even with no signal and the phone in your pocket". The image reads "PLAN YOUR DIG, scout the spot at your desk".

The post has only 1 likes so far. But the link is `rodek.app/ro?g=timisoara&t=p`, and `g=timisoara` is the group's name. In the same period, the same post went out to Club Metal Detect ROMAN and Detecție Metal Arad in Romania, and to beginner groups in the UK, Czechia and the US. Each group gets its own tracking parameter, and the developer keeps a ledger of which group brought how many people.

The Google Play install curve matches this group-by-group posting. It rises in steps rather than the smooth climb paid acquisition produces:

| Date | Cumulative installs (Google Play) | What happened |
|---|---|---|
| 07-26 | 0 | Android launch (iOS four days earlier) |
| 08-12 | 431 | |
| 08-26 → 08-27 | 848 → 1,161 | +313 in one day, the biggest single jump |
| 09-10 | 2,570 | 120–230 per day from late August to early September |
| 10-01 | 4,311 | About +1,000 per week in late September |
| 10-30 | 6,028 | Dropped to 30–55 per day in mid-to-late October |
| 11-06 | 6,640 | Up 7 days +612, small rebound after the new version |

(August figures are third-party estimates; from late October on, daily numbers are actual measurements.)

### What it is

It's called "Metal Detecting Hub: Rodek", by developer Neagoe Andrei. It isn't the phone-magnetometer "find metal" toy you see in the store. Search "Metal Detector" and the top results are all that kind, with the leader at 17.7M installs. Rodek's users already own a real detector worth a few hundred to a few thousand dollars, and they want a dedicated field map:

- **Restricted-area boundary alerts** : about 2.56M protected sites and archaeological zones, offline-capable, alerts that fire even with the screen locked. The website says 47 countries; the Nov 4 iPhone v1.7 added 19 more (Mexico, Peru, Turkey, Ukraine, Saudi Arabia, Thailand...).

- **See what's underground** : USGS LiDAR terrain for the US, Italy's Ministry of Culture 1-meter LiDAR, Spain's 1956-year nationwide aerial survey, historical topo maps from a hundred years ago as overlays, WWI and WWII trenches and craters, Roman roads and Inca trails.

- **US landowner lookup** : tap any parcel and pull the owner's name, mailing address and acreage from public county records. The website's pitch: "In the US, the hardest step in detecting is knowing whose door to knock on."

- Add detecting track logs, find journals, group organizing for "who's going today," and a secondhand marketplace.

Free to use. Pro is $9.99/month or $89.90/year, or $179 one-time purchase. The one-time price went up from $149 in Nov 2, and the site calls it the "launch window" price; v1.7 also added day and week passes.

### Why it sells

**The selling point isn't "it's useful," it's "you could break the law without it."** Digging a registered monument in the UK, disturbing a site on federal land or one protected under ARPA in the US, or touching an archaeological site in mainland Europe can all carry criminal liability. "Can I dig on this spot?" is the first question every detectorist asks before heading out. Say that in a group chat and everyone gets it, and no other similar app has this feature.

**Post wherever people are.** Metal detecting skews older, and enthusiasts gather in local Facebook groups, not on TikTok. Rodek's TikTok has 231 followers, with its top of 5 videos at about 1,040 views; its Facebook page has only 181 followers. The traffic isn't on its own accounts; it's in other people's groups.

**Trade a one-year membership for a pinned post.** The creator page has a section written for group admins: if your group has 5,000+ members, pin Rodek's intro post and let Rodek promote in the group, and you get a full year of Pro. Keep the post pinned and it renews yearly. You also get a referral code and a cut of anyone who joins through you. For a developer, that's a ready-made, on-topic audience of five thousand people rented for almost nothing.

**Free in the home market first, then charge.** The creator page says "Romania-first." In August it was free in Romanian groups, and Romania is also the country with the most iOS ratings (9, 11-06). The website FAQ now says "Romania and other countries are the same price."

**People are paying.** From Nov 2 it showed up on a string of European App Store Navigation Top Grossing charts: Netherlands #24 (11-06), Latvia #45, Poland #49, Lithuania #53, Romania #80–133, Germany #115, and US #200 (11-03). The bar for small-country grossing charts is low, a few subscriptions can get you on, so this only shows that several countries have buyers, not how many. Revenue isn't public, so it can't be estimated.

### The half you can't see: 20,000 landing pages

The website is a static site, and its sitemap contains **21,229 URLs** :

- About 703 detector models × 25 languages of "detector specs / comparison" pages;

- One "metal detecting laws" page for each of 50 US states;

- Landing pages for 47 countries that auto-redirect by IP and browser language;

- One-on-one comparison pages against LuckyFind, onX Hunt, Aureal, Tect O Trak, GO TERRAIN, Metal Logger and MD Companion.

Its robots.txt also explicitly allows GPTBot, ClaudeBot and PerplexityBot, and the comparison-page FAQs are written as Q&A like "What's the best metal detecting app of 2026? Rodek is...", aiming for the recommendation slot in AI search. One social post reads "We asked ChatGPT for the best detecting app, and Rodek came first." How much traffic these pages actually bring isn't visible from outside (unverified).

One person built protected-area data for dozens of countries, multi-country LiDAR, 20,000 multilingual landing pages and an interface in 30+ languages in just over three months, and each update log adds 19 countries. That pace is hard to reach without heavy AI-assisted development (inference).

### Who it's competing with

The niche has no big players:

| Product | Scale | How Rodek differs |
|---|---|---|
| Detector Maps (Australia) | Google Play 55,376 installs, 1,014 rating (11-06) | Mainly Australian gold-prospecting and mining-claim maps |
| The Realm by Minelab | Google Play 34,364 installs | Minelab's own community for its detector brand |
| GO TERRAIN (official XP app) | iOS US store 113 ratings | Live pinpointing with XP detectors, tied to hardware |
| LuckyFind, Tect O Trak, Metal Logger and others | Dozens of ratings | GPS logbooks, no protected areas or LiDAR |
| Aureal | iOS US store 1 ratings | Closest in features, but iOS only and US only |
| onX Hunt | Million-level | Strongest US parcel-ownership maps, but built for hunters |

The largest in this category has only about 50,000+ installs. Brand apps are tied to their own hardware, and indie developers mostly make logbooks. Rodek is currently the only one that puts multi-country legal data, terrain and history, and community into one app, across all three platforms, in many languages.

The weakness is also here: the ceiling is low. The largest in the category has only tens of thousands of users, and distribution means posting group by group by hand, which doesn't scale. Since October, daily installs have dropped from 100–200 to 30–90.

### How many people have seen it

Almost no one. Revenue isn't public, there's no press coverage, X shows 90 discussions in 0 days, only auto-generated pages from download sites, and no copycats have turned up.

### If it were you

**The verdict** : don't try to copy Rodek head-on. Its data already covers 60+ countries in this small niche. What's worth copying is the approach: find a hobby community where "know where it's legal before you go" matters, build a map from public government data, and work their Facebook groups one at a time for pinned posts.

**Who it suits** : developers aged 1–2 who can use AI to write code quickly and are willing to wade through government open data (protected areas, parcels, LiDAR, old maps); people who are already in an outdoor hobby community, or whose home country has no one doing this yet.

**Who it doesn't suit** : people who need a large user base and plan to grow with paid ads (this audience is small, and acquisition costs won't pencil out); people unwilling to work group admins one by one in Facebook groups; people who can't handle data cleaning, since that's the real barrier here.

**How to do it** , two paths:

1. **Pick a different hobby** : the same pain exists elsewhere. Fossil and mineral collecting (which sites are protected, which need permits), magnet fishing (which river stretches and piers you can drop a hook), wild mushroom and foraging rules (nature reserve regulations), beach scavenging, and wild camping all share "check the rules before you go," and those crowds also gather in local Facebook groups. Pick one country, turn protected areas, parcels and rules into an offline boundary alert, and that's where people pay. Which of these hobbies already have mature map apps is for you to check (unverified).

2. **In detecting, do what it hasn't done well** : it doesn't connect to hardware (XP and Minelab only link to their own detectors), and it has no find identification or valuation. A tool for "photo-identify coins and artifacts + each country's reporting process" would complement it, not compete head-on.

Charge the way it does: free to use, annual around $60–90, one-time around $150. These buyers spend hundreds to thousands of dollars on a detector, so the price doesn't bother them.

**How to acquire users** : follow its three steps. ① List local groups of 5,000+ people in your target countries, offer group admins a year of membership in exchange for a pinned post, with one tracking link per group; ② Give the home or first country away free to build ratings and word of mouth, then charge across the board; ③ Use a structured data set (equipment models, state or country rules) × multilingual landing pages, let AI crawlers in, and write the FAQs as Q&A.

**When to start** : in the Northern Hemisphere, detecting and collecting peak from spring to autumn. Launch the first country before March of 2027, then start posting in groups as spring arrives.

**Signs you've misread this** : ① If Rodek's Google Play daily installs haven't climbed back above 100 by peak season in spring 2027, the audience can't carry volume even at peak; ② If its App Store small-country grossing rankings have all dropped off by January of 2027, the early paid wave was just a brief opening; ③ If you've approached 10 group admins in your target community and fail to get 3 pinned posts, this group-by-group approach doesn't work there.

## Metal Detecting Hub: why Rodek (com.rodek.app) managed to get traction

> Research date 2026-11-06. Data sources: our googleplay / appstore / metaads libraries (agent-im server), Jina/Exa search, TikHub, x-radar, the official site and store pages.

### One line

A Romanian indie developer who works full-time in London, Neagoe Andrei, built a map app for metal detectorists: LiDAR terrain, century-old historical map overlays, **live alerts for roughly 2.56M restricted or protected areas** (47 countries, with 19 more just added), find logging, team community and a secondhand market. Pro is $9.99/month or $89.90/year, Lifetime $179. It is still small (6,640 cumulative Play installs worldwide), so calling it "breaking out" is a stretch. The fair read: one person running on heavy data, Facebook group drops and programmatic SEO has built a steady small base that holds real chart positions in several small European countries' iOS Navigation top-grossing charts, which means people are paying.

### 1. Data: how big it is and how it grew

**Google Play installs (googleplay library app_day_ext, AppstoreSpy estimates; from 11-29 onward it's our own collection)**

| Date | Total installs | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| 2026-07-26 | 0 | Play launch (iOS 7-22) |
| 08-12 | 431 | |
| 08-26 → 08-27 | 848 → 1,161 | +313 in one day, the biggest jump |
| 09-03 | 2,281 | late August to early September, 120–230 a day |
| 09-10 | 2,570 | Single day +218 |
| 10-01 | 4,311 | about +1,000 over one week in late September |
| 10-08 | 5,025 | |
| 10-30 | 6,028 | dropped to 30–55 a day by mid-to-late October |
| 11-06 | 6,640 | +612 over the last 7 days (about 87/day), with a small rebound after v1.7 shipped on 11-01 |

- The pattern comes in bursts (steps around 8-27, 9-10 and 10-01), matching the rhythm of Facebook group posts and version-plus-country launches. It does not look like a smooth, continuous paid-acquisition curve.

- Play charts: it only hovered around #79–#110 on the Poland Maps & Navigation free chart (googleplay.chart_rank, from 10-29 to 11-06). Play shows no public rating (too few ratings for the store to display).

- **iOS (appstore library app_day)** : very few ratings (RO 9, GB 4, PL 2, DE 1, US 0; iTunes lookup 11-06), but from 11-02 it charted on a run of **Navigation top-grossing** charts in small European countries: #24 in the Netherlands (11-06), #45 in Latvia, #49 in Poland, #53 in Lithuania, #80–#133 in Romania, #115 in Germany, #200 in the US (11-03). The bar to chart in small-country Navigation top-grossing is low, so a few subscriptions can get you on. It still shows Pro subscriptions and Lifetime purchases are real, spread across several countries.

- The in-app purchase range 11-02 went from $3.99–$149 to $3.99–$179 (Lifetime got more expensive; the site says "Lifetime is a launch-window price"). v1.7 also added day, week and month passes.

### 2. Competitors: who else does the same thing

First, separate two categories. The "Metal Detector" search term in the store is filled by **phone magnetometer toy apps** (e.g. Metal Detector - Metal Finder with 17.7M Play installs; EMF Scanner - Metal Detector 15.1M). That is a different need (finding nails, pranks). The real "companion apps" for people who own detectors are all very small:

| Product | Platform | Launched | Scale | How Rodek differs | |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| GO TERRAIN (official XP app) | iOS / Android | 2022 (iOS records 2023-11) | iOS US store 113 rating 4.39 | A brand's own app, its selling point is live pinpointing synced to XP DEUS/ORX detectors. Rodek doesn't connect to hardware, but covers protected areas, LiDAR, historical maps and community, and works with any brand | |
| Detector Maps (Gold Discovery Solutions, Australia) | Android/iOS | 2025-08 | Play 55,376 installs, 1,014 rating (googleplay 11-06) | Mostly Australian gold prospecting, with geology and mining-title maps. Rodek leans toward European historical sites and legality | |
| The Realm by Minelab | Android/iOS | 2025-11 | Play 34,364 installs, 110 rating | Minelab's official ecosystem and community. Rodek is neutral and localized in many countries | |
| LuckyFind | iOS / Android | 2022-01 | iOS US store 55 ratings | Check-in logs and tracks, with no protected-area data and no LiDAR | |
| Aureal | iOS only | 2026-02 | iOS US store 1 ratings | Closest in features (LiDAR, historical maps, web version), but iOS only and US only | |
| Tect O Trak | Android | Long-established | UK niche community | A UK logging app that only records tracks and finds | |
| onX Hunt | iOS/Android | Long-established and large | Millions of users, mostly hunters | The strongest US land-ownership map, but built for hunters. Rodek brings the landowner lookup into the detecting context | |
| Metal Logger, MD Companion, DigLog, Ground Score | Mostly iOS | Around 2025 | Single-digit to a few dozen ratings | All are logbooks | |
| Dektor, SmartDetect.ro (Romania) | Web/app | — | local to Romania | Rodek's site even has a dedicated Romanian comparison page | |
| Patchly, Treasure Map \ | DetectApp | Android | 2026 | Play 513 / 7,168 installs | Small peers |

Bottom line: this category **has no big player** . The largest peers (Detector Maps, Minelab Realm) only have tens of thousands of installs. Brand apps are tied to hardware, and most other standalone apps are "GPS logbooks". Rodek is the only one that packs **multi-country legal data (protected and restricted areas) + LiDAR + historical maps + community** into a single app, across Android, iOS and web, in 30+ languages.

### 3. Growth tactics: where users come from

1. **Facebook detecting-group drops (the main channel, verified)** . The official page "Rodek · Metal Detecting App" posts as a Page in many local detecting groups, in Romanian, English, Czech and US English:
    - A Romanian "Detectie metale Timisoara" post, 2026-08-15: "Pentru Romania aplicatia e gratuita" ("For Romania the app is free"), linking to `rodek.app/ro?g=timisoara&t=p`. **Each group gets its own tracking parameter** , so they can measure which group brings how many people. [Post](https://www.facebook.com/groups/234719298049837/posts/1605658044289282/)
    - The same post also appears in several other Romanian groups, including Club Metal Detect ROMAN and Detecție Metal Arad. There is a UK group post, "Rodek App: A Complete Tool for UK Metal Detectorists", a Czech video post, "Detektor kovu-aneb Nováčci", and a US newcomer group where someone replied linking rodek.app/us and the detector database. (Jina search results, facebook.com/groups/…)
    - Self-built group, "Rodek Metal Detecting Community".
    - The site openly prices cooperation with group admins: **"Run a metal detecting Facebook group? Pin a Rodek post, let Rodek post promotions to members, and get a full year of Pro, renewed every year, plus a referral revenue share"** (rodek.app/us/creators).
    - The main page itself has only 181 followers. The traffic isn't coming from its own page, it's coming from other people's groups.

2. **Romania first, free to build traction (verified)** . The creators page calls itself "Romania-first", and in August the Romanian-language groups were told the app is free in Romania. Romania has the most iOS ratings (9). The official FAQ now reads "Romania has the same plans as every other country", meaning free was pulled back once traction was built.

3. **Programmatic SEO (verified)** . The official site (a static Astro build) has **21,229 URLs** in its sitemap: about 703 detector models × 25 languages of "detector database/comparison" pages (e.g. /detectors/bounty-hunter-…, /pl/wykrywacze-metali/porownanie), 50 US state "metal detecting laws" pages, 47 country landing pages (/us, /uk, /pl…, auto-redirected by IP and browser language), and comparison pages for "Rodek vs LuckyFind / onX Hunt / Aureal / Tect O Trak / GO TERRAIN / Metal Logger / MD Companion". When Jina searched "Rodek metal detecting", these pages were already indexed.

4. **GEO (for AI search)** (the approach is confirmed, the results are not). robots.txt explicitly allows GPTBot, ClaudeBot, PerplexityBot and others. The comparison pages use Q&A FAQs such as "What is the best metal detecting app in 2026? Rodek is…". One social post reads: "We asked ChatGPT what the best apps for metal detecting are, and Rodek came back at number one".

5. **Creator / affiliate program** (live, results unverified): free Lifetime Pro, exclusive codes, subscription revenue share, homepage placement. No large-creator reviews found.

6. **TikTok / Instagram owned:** TikTok @rodekapp with 231 followers and 5 videos, top single video around 1,040 views (TikHub); a few Instagram Reels. Small volume, not a main channel.

7. **Paid ads:** Rodek is not in the metaads library (it only tracks a fixed list of products, so absence doesn't mean no ads). Unverified.

8. **Store expansion + localization:** every release adds countries and languages in bulk (v1.7: +19 countries, +4 languages). Each new country means a new batch of local detector communities and long-tail search terms.

### 4. Why it took off (at this scale)

- **Hits a real pain point: where can I legally detect?** In the UK (scheduled monuments), mainland Europe (archaeological sites) and the US (ARPA, federal land), trespassing into protected areas can be a criminal matter. Rodek turns 2.56M protected areas into offline, lock-screen alerts that warn you when you cross into one, and in the US adds county landowner lookup (solving 'I need permission to knock on someone's door'). It's a selling point detectorists can explain in one sentence and no other app has, which is why group posts convert.

- **Channel and audience are a close match:** metal detecting skews older and concentrates in local Facebook groups, not TikTok or Reddit. Rodek pushes distribution straight into Facebook groups and wins over admins with 'a free year of Pro for the group owner'.

- **The data work itself is the moat:** 47→66 countries' protected areas, national LiDAR (USGS, Italian ministry 1m, Portugal, Spain 1956 aerial photos), WWI/WWII trenches and shell craters, Roman and Inca roads, battle maps... One person built this over 3 months (the changelog is extremely dense, suggesting heavy AI-assisted development; the developer is a full-stack engineer, neagoeandrei.com).

- **Pricing that gets paid:** annual $89.90, Lifetime $179 is not expensive for hobbyists who spend hundreds or thousands of dollars on detectors; its appearance on multi-country iOS navigation grossing charts is evidence people pay.

### 5. Differentiation, and whether that's why it took off

The differentiator is **a data layer of 'legality + terrain/history'** , not yet another GPS logbook. Add no tie to a hardware brand, multiple countries and languages, and three platforms. Competitors are either hardware-brand-bound (XP, Minelab), single-country logbooks (LuckyFind, Tect O Trak, Aureal), or aimed at other audiences (onX Hunt for hunters). This differentiation **is** why it gets shared in groups and converts to subscriptions; but it has only produced 'small and steady' growth. The category ceiling is low (the largest competitor has only 55k installs), channel relies on manual posting that's hard to scale, and growth clearly slowed after October.

### 6. How many people have seen it

- Revenue not public (no TrustMRR listing; the developer's personal site only mentions another product, Garzoni).

- Media / big accounts: none. On X, 90 posts in 0 days (x-radar); only auto-aggregated pages like CNET Download, Softonic, Similarweb, AppTracker.

- Copycats: none found.

- Verdict: **few people know about it yet** .

### 7. What others can learn

- The go-to-market formula for vertical hobby apps: **find the Facebook groups where the audience actually gathers → one tracking parameter per group → trade 'free annual plan for the admin + revenue share' for pinned posts and posting rights.**

- Use public government data (protected areas, LiDAR, historical maps, county parcels) to build a data layer 'no one else bothers with', upgrading the pain point from 'useful' to 'you could break the law without it'.

- Programmatic SEO: use a structured library (detector models, state laws, country rules) × multilingual long-tail pages, plus robots rules that allow AI crawlers and Q&A-style FAQs to compete for ChatGPT recommendations.

- Build seed users and ratings for free in the home market first, then start charging across the board.

### 8. Still unclear

- Whether Meta ads were run (not tracked in the library); which group, post or store expansion caused each of the 8-27, 9-10, 10-01 growth steps is unverified.

- Real iOS downloads and revenue (Apple doesn't disclose; only grossing chart placement is visible).

- Retention: no Play ratings, single-digit iOS ratings, so user sentiment isn't visible.

- How much organic traffic the programmatic SEO pages actually bring, and whether ChatGPT really ranks it first: unverified.

- A Reddit r/metaldetecting thread 'Apps for metal detecting?' was 403; I didn't read whether Rodek is mentioned in it.
