"At the courthouse, he looked back": a small company in Bucheon sells AI interactive fiction with a melodramatic opening line
What it is An AI interactive fiction app for Korean women readers: official writers supply a web-novel-style melodramatic opening, and you play the story out line by line with AI characters. Each choice costs coins.
CHow you could follow it Don't do it in Korea, where there are already a dozen-plus like 위프, Crack and 멜팅. Take the playbook (soap-opera openers as ads, landing pages that go straight into the story, pay-per-choice in coins) and test it in a language market with lots of female web-novel readers that AI chat hasn't crowded yet.
- Data (updated daily) · first launch 2026-07-27 · 11-07 installs 10,422
Android · Total installs worldwide Data 2026-10-29 → 2026-11-07 (10 days, 10 observations). Google's detail page only refreshes install counts every other day, so a flat day doesn't mean nobody installed.
Roundflip, a Korean company only registered this year, has built just one product, Mood. Official writers supply web-novel-style melodramatic openings, and readers play the story out line by line with AI characters, with each choice costing coins. On Android it has only 10k-plus installs, yet it sits at #69 on the Korea Google Play entertainment Top Grossing chart. The product is nearly identical to a dozen Korean rivals; what it gets right is distribution: the Meta ad copy is the story's first line, and tapping it opens the scene on the web. Below: how it collects money, why chasing it in Korea isn't worth it, and where this playbook could travel.
An ad launched Oct 30
In Oct 30 2026, a Facebook page called "무드 mood" started running an ad whose body text was just two lines:
끝내기로 한 결혼, 법원 앞에서 그가 돌아봤다. 두 사람의 이야기를 내 선택으로 이어가세요. — A marriage they had agreed to end; at the courthouse, he looked back. Continue the two people's story with your choices.
The headline reads "끝내기로 했는데, 왜 돌아봐?" (We agreed to end it, so why are you looking back?). Tapping it doesn't open an app store page. Instead it opens the first scene of the story on the mood-by.ai website, where you can type a reply to him right away. Another ad launched the same day reads: "The husband you thought was an ordinary office worker turns out to be a National Intelligence Service agent. The nights of pretending not to know begin." (Meta ad library, Korea, 11-06)
In the "start here" row on its homepage, the hottest story is "Why won't you touch me? My boyfriend bet on me": on day 29 of dating, the heroine overhears, behind a tent at a campus festival stall, his friend saying that whoever gets her into bed within a month wins, with a deadline of tomorrow night, and her boyfriend doesn't know she heard. The counter beside this story reads 157.4K. Others: the day before meeting the parents for an engagement, the boyfriend goes to help his first love move house (79.9K); an ABO setting, where two people are stuck for three days at a research station in a blizzard with only two suppressants left (84.5K); a manhwa artist who has serialized for four years suddenly hears her editor's inner voice saying "don't go" (58.6K). The author of all five stories is the official account "무드" (homepage of mood-by.ai, 11-06).
In other words, every story the company writes comes with an ad built in.
What it is and how big it is
- Product: you pick a "world" and push the plot forward by chatting with an AI character from a given opening. The store page sells "your one line can change the relationship and where it goes," with sudden confessions, secret reveals and similar "events" paired with scene illustrations, long-term memory, and an illustration gallery that grows the more you play. Genres are modern romance, 로판 (romance fantasy), BL and ABO, and the readership is clearly women.
- Company: Roundflip Co., Ltd., Wonmi-gu, Bucheon, Gyeonggi-do. The mail-order sales registration number on the store page is "2026-부천원미-1496", and the company was registered this year. The official site says "the first service is Mood"; no funding, press coverage or founder information turned up.
- Timeline: on Play 7-27, web version opened Aug 6, iOS launched Aug 8; Oct 13 the Studio opened so users can write their own stories, Oct 16 a story contest with a 3M won prize pool, Oct 26 daily check-in rewards added, Nov 6 a user-acquisition quest "다섯 남자의 부탁" (Five Men's Requests) launched.
- Scale:
| Date | Google Play cumulative installs |
|---|---|
| 08-17 | about 1,000 (est.) |
| 09-15 | about 5,800 (est.) |
| 10-21 | about 9,000 (est.) |
| 11-06 | 10,422 (last 7 days, +868) |
50 to 300 installs a day, occasionally spiking to around 400 in a day (presumably when the ad budget was raised), and never a true breakout. It charted only in Korea: on the Google Play entertainment Top Grossing chart it climbed from #76 at 10-29 to #69 at 10-31 and has stayed there since; on the iOS Korea entertainment Top Grossing chart it has stayed between #53 and #75, peaking at #53 on 11-03, but has only 13 ratings (App Store Korea, 11-06). The Play rating is based on 3.9,58 reviews.
The web's 157.4K figure is an order of magnitude above Android's 10k installs, which suggests a sizable share of people are playing on the web, consistent with ads landing on the web. Whether that number is plays, chat turns or unique people can't be determined from the outside.
Where the money comes from: 70 coins per choice
Coins are sold as in-app purchases, from $1.89 to $25.49 per tier. Reviews spell out the billing clearly. One two-star review from Oct 18:
Each choice costs 70 coins… way too expensive (and you can only top up, which is also pricey)… it has an edit feature, but each edit costs coins too.
On the other side are the heavy users. Oct 11, one user wrote:
I didn't have a good opinion of AI chat at first, but the ads were so everywhere that I finally gave it a try... Over three-plus weeks I burned through 20 million+ won in coins alone... ㅎ I spent 2000 rounds on script 1 alone, before script 2 unlocked.
200k won is about 150 USD. Charging per choice, plus hooks like illustration galleries and hidden scripts, concentrates the money in a few people. Korean readers of romance-fantasy and BL web novels already pay per next chapter, so this model is familiar to them.
One more thing: Korea's entertainment Top Grossing chart is very shallow. The #76 app in the 11-06 list had only 1,110 installs (Google Play Korea entertainment Top Grossing, 11-06). So a #69 rank shows that people are paying, not that a lot of money is being made. Its revenue isn't public.
Where users come from
- Meta feed ads landing on a web page (confirmed). The two above are examples. Landing on the web has two benefits: it skips the 'go install an app from the store first' step, and topping up on the web avoids the cut Google and Apple take.
- Quite a lot of ads (backed by reviews). Besides the 'the ads are everywhere' comment, Oct 14 also has a review marked helpful by 16 people: 'I came for the setting in the ads I liked. But the ads say free, and it isn't. New sign-ups get very few coins; other apps at least give coins for daily check-ins.' 12 days later, it launched daily check-in coins.
- Almost no creator or influencer work. Nothing shows up for it on TikTok; the official YouTube channel has 7 subscribers and 3 videos; nobody mentions it on X (11-06).
- From mid-October it added in-app mechanics: users can write stories, contests were held, and daily check-ins give coins. The latest task is 'publish a new work and get it to 3 readers' for coins, up to 1,300. It uses coins to have authors pull in readers for it. But contest-winning works only have 88, 270, 1.5K, 2.6K counts, two orders of magnitude below official stories. The official writers still carry the product.
Who it's competing with: Korea's lane is already crowded
On 11-06's Korean Google Play entertainment Top Grossing chart, more than ten Korean-made AI character chat and interactive fiction products sit in the top 80:
| Product | Global installs | Korea entertainment Top Grossing | vs. Mood |
|---|---|---|---|
| 크랙 Crack(wrtn) | 1.14M | 4 | Web-novel protagonist-style character chat, huge UGC character library, backed by big companies |
| 제타 zeta(Scatter Lab) | 7.72M | 6 | Teen and anime-style, two orders of magnitude bigger |
| 멜팅 Melting | 400k | 13 | Affinity-driven character chat; its relationship mechanics are very close to Mood's |
| 위프 WHIF | 1.6M | 14 | 'Web-novel-style AI chat, romance and BL', nearly the same positioning, already expanded to Vietnam and Thailand |
| 프론티아 Frontia | 360k | 31 | 'AI interactive drama', protagonist experience |
| 티키타 Tikita | 77k | 38 | 4,000+ stories, basic chat free |
| Plaitoon 플레이툰 | 15k | Books category 16 | Women-focused romance, romance-fantasy and BL web-novel-style AI chat; the closest to Mood in both positioning and size |
Further down are Caveduck, BagelChat, LovyDovy, Pling, China-made PolyBuzz and Talkie, plus character chats built by Naver Webtoon, Krafton and Kakao on their own IP. Mood is a late, small player among them; it's more of a follower of the WeFeel and Crack wave.
Its one clear difference from these rivals is web-first, official writers write the openings, and the opening doubles as an ad. The product itself has no moat.
What you can take from it
- The story opening is the ad. A one-line melodramatic hook is both the first act of the story and a feed ad creative; the writing team produces openings in batches, so content production and ad creative are the same job.
- The ad lands on a web page, not in the store. Tap through and you can reply to the first line right away, the shortest path to conversion; web payments skip the store's cut.
- Charges coins per choice, with illustration collection and hidden scripts. Even a small install base can reach a shallow chart with a few heavy users.
- One thing not to copy: the ad says 'free', then you get inside and everything costs money. Nearly every bad review is about this.
If it were you
C. In Korea it's a poor bet against it. What you can take is the approach: 'a melodramatic opening as the ad, land on the web and start playing right away, charge coins per choice', and try it in a women-focused web-novel market not yet crowded with AI character chat.
Who it's for: a team where one person can write women's web fiction and crank out ten openings a day that make you want to tap "read" on the first line, and another person has run Meta ads and knows exactly what each paying user costs to acquire. Ideally a native speaker of some market where female readers already get used to paying for the next chapter (inferred: Japan's otome and TL readers, romance readers in Taiwan and Southeast Asia, and the English-speaking romantasy crowd are all worth checking first to see who's already running paid campaigns).
Not for you if: you want to build for Korea (위프, Crack and 멜팅 got there before you and are bigger); you only know how to code and can't write a hook (here the tech isn't the moat, how good your opening is, is); or you're counting on a UGC community to grow organically (Mood's own user creations only number in the hundreds to low thousands).
How to build it: web first, app later. Start with 20 to 30 official stories, each with a one-line hook and a strong premise (a bet that turns into romance, the night before meeting the parents, trapped somewhere, being able to hear inner thoughts). Chapter one is free; after that, charge coins per choice or per chapter. Illustrations and hidden scenes serve as the paywall hooks. Give new users enough coins for their first night of play, and start check-in rewards on day one. Mood only got added after the bad reviews came in.
How to get users: Meta feed ads. The ad copy is the first line of the story, and the landing page drops users straight into that story's chat box. One creative per story, test with a small budget, keep the few that bring down first-purchase cost, then scale up (inferred). Don't write "free" in the ads.
Before when: Anyone can copy this playbook. Your window depends on when the market you pick gets crowded. Advice: before January 2027, run a small-budget test in one market and get your first paid data. If it doesn't work, switch the niche or the market.
What it looks like when you've misread it: ① Mood has dropped out of the Korea Top Grossing chart's top 100, and its Meta ads have stopped running. That means even the original's unit economics don't work. ② In the market you picked, the Meta ad library already has several apps running the same "melodramatic opener + web landing page" play, and they've been running for over a month. ③ You've run it for a month, and the cost to acquire a first-time payer has stayed above what those users pay in their first month. This business depends on a small number of people spending a lot, and you can't buy those people, so it doesn't hold up.

One line
Mood is the only product from Roundflip (株式会社 라운드플립, Bucheon, Gyeonggi-do), a small Korean company: an 'AI interactive fiction' app plus a web version, aimed at women. The official writers craft 'web-novel hook' openings, each user line changes the plot, with an event system, unlockable illustrations and long-term memory, charged in coins. It reached #69 on Korea's Google Play entertainment Top Grossing chart and #53–75 on iOS Korea entertainment Top Grossing, not because the product is new, but because three things stack: Meta feed ads whose creative is a K-drama-style melodramatic opening; ads land on the web version, bypassing app stores; coin pricing that lets a few heavy female users spend hundreds of thousands of won at once. Korea's AI character chat lane is already crowded (Crack, Zeta, WeFeel, Melting, BagelChat…), and Mood is a small player there with little differentiation. Its opportunity lies in using 'official writers + web-based paid acquisition' to recover money first among a small audience.
1. Who they are
- Developer Roundflip Co., Ltd., address in Wonmi-gu, Bucheon, Gyeonggi-do (the mail-order sales registration number on the store page, '2026-부천원미-1496', shows the company was registered 2026 years ago) [Play store page]. The roundflip.com website says 'our first service is Mood'; the company has only this one product [roundflip.com; googleplay library developer_apps_in_db=1]. No funding, media coverage or founder information found.
- Timeline (mood-by.ai announcements page): Aug 6 service opened (web), Play launch on 7-27, iOS listed Aug 8; Oct 13 'Studio' opened, letting users write their own stories; Oct 16 added input editing, same day launched a story contest with a 3M won total prize pool (1M won first prize); Oct 26 added daily check-in for free coins; October 23–27 iOS 1.0.7/1.0.8 'updated coin top-up tiers and prices'; Nov 6 launched the 'Five Men's Request' task event (publish a new work, get 3 readers, write a review, up to 1,300 coins).
- Product: users pick a 'world' (officially 'worlds'), start from a melodramatic opening and advance the plot by chatting with AI characters. Selling points: 'every line changes the relationship and direction', an 'event system' (sudden confessions, secrets revealed, with scene illustrations), long-term memory and an illustration gallery. Genres include modern romance, romance-fantasy, BL, omegaverse (ABO), sentinel/guide, plus mystery and horror.
- Pricing: in-app gold coins, $1.89–$25.49 per tier [googleplay library app_snap]. One Play review says "each choice costs 70 gold coins" and "you can only pay to play" [Play store page 2026-10-18 reviews].

- 3.9,58 reviews on Play with a 2026-11-06 rating [Play store page]. Our review table has none, since it never made the overall top 30 and review scraping doesn't cover it.
- Benchmark: the same day, #76 on Korea's Entertainment Top Grossing chart, "펀네이션", had only 1,110 installs, so the bar to chart in Korea's top 70 in this category is low. A small group of concentrated payers is enough to get on the chart [googleplay library chart_rank 2026-11-06].
iOS (appstore library, Korean store): listed on 2026-08-08; ratings count rose from 10-28 to 10 reviews by 11-06, reaching 13 reviews. It stayed at #53–#75 on the Entertainment Top Grossing chart (best #11-03, #53 at most), was #55 that day, and #194 on the Entertainment Top Free chart [appstore library app_day; App Store page]. Its iOS grossing rank runs ahead of Android.
Web: On the homepage's "Beginner picks" row at the official site, the play counts for 5 stories are 157.4K, 84.5K, 79.9K, 58.6K and 19.7K, and every author is the official account "무드", not user submissions. The contest-winning works show only 88, 270, 2.6K and 1.5K [mood-by.ai homepage 2026-11-06]. Web story counts are far higher than the Android install count of 10k, which suggests a large share of users play on the web, consistent with the ad landing pages in the next section. We haven't verified what the counts measure (plays, dialogue turns or unique visitors).
3. Competitors (Korean AI character chat / interactive fiction, all on the same Korea Entertainment Top Grossing chart)
googleplay library 2026-11-06, Korea Entertainment Top Grossing rank:

| 멜팅 Melting | Watnee | 2025-06 | 400k | 13 | Character chat with an affection system, themes ranging from romance to thriller. Its mechanics are close to Mood's relationship-evolution model. |
| 위프 WHIF | Bunkerkids | 2025-10 | 1.6M | 14 | "AI character chat like a web novel, romance and BL". Its positioning is nearly identical to Mood's, it has already scaled, and it has gone global (Vietnam, Thailand). |

| Plaitoon 플레이툰 | NettY | 2026-04 | 15k | Books category, top grossing 16. | "Romance, 로판, and BL women-focused AI chat that continues like a web novel". Its positioning is the closest to Mood, and its scale is also the closest. |
| 둠칫 / MYMI | 메타코스믹 / WonMo | 2026-02 / 2026-07 | 6k / 5.6k | 142 / 131 | Women-focused AI chat, from the same small team as Mood. |
| PolyBuzz / Talkie | Chinese going global | 2023– | 57.9M / 60.8M | 63 / – | Global general-purpose character chat that also charts in Korea. |
| Big-company features | Naver Webtoon "캐릭터챗", Krafton Kiff, Kakao. | – | – | – | Chat with characters from their own IP (Chosun Ilbo English edition 2026-08-26). |
Conclusion: this category is extremely crowded in Korea. Among the top 80 on Korea's Entertainment Top Grossing chart alone, more than ten are Korean AI character or interactive fiction products. Mood's "web novel feel + choices that change the story + women-focused" largely overlaps with 위프, Plaitoon, and 멜팅.
4. Growth tactics (with evidence)
- Meta (Facebook/Instagram) feed ads landing on the web, not the app stores (confirmed). Searching "mood-by.ai" in the Meta Ad Library for the Korean market shows ads run by the Page "무드 mood" (page_id 61594798365876). Two of them started running in Oct 30:
- "끝내기로 한 결혼, 법원 앞에서 그가 돌아봤다. 두 사람의 이야기를 내 선택으로 이어가세요." (A marriage they had decided to end. In front of the courthouse, he looked back. Continue the story of the two of them with your choices.) The headline is "끝내기로 했는데, 왜 돌아봐? 내 선택으로 이어지는 이야기, Mood" ("We decided to end it, so why look back? A story continued by your choices, Mood"). The landing page is mood-by.ai/worlds/…/play, which goes straight to a specific story on the web version, not an app store.
- "The husband who seemed like an ordinary office worker turned out to be a National Intelligence Service agent. A night where you have to pretend you don't know has begun." The creative plays on a melodramatic, Korean-drama or web-novel style hook; clicking through lands you on the first scene of that story. Our metaads library finds advertisers only through English keywords in the US, GB, DE, and JP markets, so it did not capture this one; the googleads tracking list does not include it either.
- User reviews back up substantial ad volume (confirmed): "I had a bad impression of AI chat, but the ads were everywhere, so I finally tried it… in 3 weeks I spent over 20 million won on coins"; "I came because an ad showed a setting I like, but the ad said it was free, and it isn't" [Play store page, 2026-10-11 and 10-14 reviews].
- Store search / organic traffic: the base of a few dozen Play installs a day may come from store search for "AI 채팅" and from users following ads. I can't separate the two (unverified).
- Content and community: searches on TikTok for terms like "무드 AI 채팅" found no content from it (results were zeta, 레플리, zingchat). YouTube has an official channel, @mood-by-ai, with 7 subscribers and 3 videos. It is not mentioned on X [TikHub, Jina search, x-radar 2026-11-06]. Creator and content channels are largely unused.
- On-site retention and UGC mechanics (confirmed, but only started in mid-October): Studio, contests, check-in rewards in coins, and the "Five Men's Request" task. The task design has authors recruit their own readers ("3 readers for your work = +500 coins"), which trades coins for content supply and user acquisition.
5. Why it showed up (relatively speaking)
- Where the money comes from: coins are charged per choice and per turn (70 coins per choice), plus collection incentives like the illustration gallery and hidden scripts. Heavy users are willing to pay large amounts; one user spent over 3 million won (about $20) in 150 weeks and said "I spent 1 rounds on the 2000 script to unlock script 2" [Play reviews]. Korean women-focused web fiction readers are already used to paying for the "next chapter".
- Ads land on the web: Meta ads send people directly into a specific story on the web version, skipping the install step, which makes the conversion path short. Web top-ups also avoid Google/Apple's 30% cut. This also explains why web story counts (157k) are an order of magnitude higher than Android installs (10k).
- The creative is the content: the official team writes high-hook openings (a bet on love, a fiancé going to find his first love the night before the wedding, an ABO blizzard trapping people at an observatory, a husband who is an NIS agent). Each one-line premise works as an ad. The top 5 stories on the homepage are all official, which suggests a "writing team + AI" model rather than growth driven by UGC.
- Low chart bar: the bar to make the top 70 of Korea's Entertainment grossing chart is low (the #76 app had only 1,110 installs), so 10k installs can chart as long as payment is concentrated. That does not mean the revenue is high.
6. Differentiation
- Compared with platforms like Crack, zeta, and Caveduck that offer "huge numbers of UGC characters", Mood is an official, writer-made "story world" with an event system, unlockable illustrations, and multi-script branching, closer to a playable web novel or otome game.
- Compared with 위프, Plaitoon, and 멜팅: there is almost no difference; all are "web novel feel + women-focused + BL/로판 + relationship change". The one clear difference for Mood is web first: ads land on the web version, and the app is a second entry point.
- So differentiation is not the main reason it broke out. The main driver is distribution: Meta paid acquisition landing on the web, combined with high-hook official script creatives, plus monetization that charges per choice. The product-level "event system and illustration gallery" are hooks for heavy paying users; their role is raising ARPU, not acquisition.
7. Visibility and copycats
- Revenue is not public. I found no media coverage, X discussion, or TikTok content. YouTube has only 7 subscribers. Few people know about it yet.
- Copycats: I didn't see anyone directly copying it. But similar products were already plentiful before it (위프, Plaitoon, and 멜팅 all came earlier), and it seems to be riding the same wave as 위프 and Crack.
8. What others can learn
- Paid acquisition lands on the web, not the store: the ad clicks straight into the first scene of the story, with no install needed; web top-ups skip channel fees.
- Story openings are the ad creative: official writers mass-produce "one-line melodramatic hooks", and each story can be used directly as a feed ad, so content production and ad creative are the same thing.
- Per-choice / per-turn coin charges, plus illustration collection and hidden-script unlocks: monetization concentrates on a small group of heavy users, so small install numbers can still chart in the category grossing list.
- Trading coin tasks for UGC and user acquisition: "publish a new work and get 3 readers for it" earns coins, making authors the promotion channel.
9. Uncertain
- Real web user numbers and payments, and what counts like 157.4K actually measure.
- The total volume of Meta ads and when they started (I only saw two starting Oct 30; reviews from Oct 11 already mention "ads everywhere", so they started earlier). Placements, and whether it runs TikTok or Google ads, are unverified.
- Company size and funding (nothing found).
- Whether payment relies on a handful of whale users; Play rating 3.9, with negative reviews focused on "too expensive, the ad says free but it isn't", so long-term retention is a risk.
