A Japanese developer uninstalled every short-drama app: RushDrama Pro and the "one app package per country group" playbook behind it

What it is A fully free, ad-supported short-drama app that dubs Chinese short dramas into Japanese and other languages, targeting Japan and English-speaking markets.

Why it took off Rival short-drama apps charge per episode or make you watch many ads to unlock, while this one lets you watch straight through to the ending for free, with no ads on a new user's first day. Behind it is a set of sock-puppet app package networks already proven in the Philippines: swap the package, swap the country, and run it again, plus invite codes that unlock ad-free viewing and (very likely) paid acquisition.

BHow you could copy it Pick a language where big companies mostly run paywalls and small teams still have few free dubbed packs (in early November, German and Polish). Use licensed Chinese short dramas with AI dubbing, make everything free with short ads plus invite-for-ad-free, focus on finishing the series and keeping subtitles working, and start with a small paid acquisition budget.

B grade: the playbook really makes money, and few people know about it, but short-drama charts in most countries are already full. Following it takes two hard skills, licensed content and paid acquisition, and grey-market content carries takedown risk. The remaining gaps are only in a few languages. Almost nobody knows about it yet

RushDrama Pro launched less than two months ago and has 410k installs, reaching #19 on the Japan Google Play Entertainment free chart. The product itself is nothing new. What's worth studying is how it got there: a Chinese team used the same code and the same Chinese short-drama library, re-listed it under different developer accounts at least 8 times, and each build targeted a single group of countries. Below: why it took off in Japan, which steps of the playbook you can copy, and where it will get stuck.

"I didn't have to watch a single ad, I got to episode 102"

In Nov 1, a Japanese user left RushDrama Pro a 5-star review on Google Play:

This app is amazing. I uninstalled all the other short-drama apps. The others are free but even if you watch ads all day you only unlock 5 to 10 episodes. Here I didn't watch any ads and got all the way to episode 102.

Same week, someone wrote "No ads at all the first day, they only started on day two, but far fewer and shorter than other apps," and another wrote "Most of the shows I saw in paid apps' ads are here too."

In Nov 5, a Japanese X alt account posted: "RushDrama Pro (吹き替え) 現代に舞い降りた女帝 全89話 中国 ショートドラマ 招待コード:ANOtFc", with an invite link attached. That post got 34 views; the one from Oct 28 got 55.

Put these three things together and you have the whole app: Chinese short dramas dubbed into Japanese, all free, few ads, and inviting people earns ad-free time.

The curve is stair-stepped: it hits 20 million-plus in three to four weeks after launch, then slows down week by week. The shape looks more like concentrated ad spend plus invite-driven virality than slow word-of-mouth growth (inference).

The Japan chart is worth a closer look. On 11-06 Japan's Entertainment free chart, the short-drama and video apps ranked above it are ReelShort, NetShort, FreeReels, U-NEXT, DramaWave, Lemino, GoodShort and DramaBox, all from big companies. It's the highest-ranked small-team short-drama app on that chart in Japan. On the same day, the top 200 of the Philippines Entertainment free chart included 109 apps with drama/reel/short in the name, Spain had 75, Brazil 63, and many of those are Vietnamese and Chinese small-team clones. In Japan there were 68, and in the top 20 it was the only small-team app.

It's actually the #8 build

Looking at its privacy policy and website turns up a family of sibling apps. The privacy policies are all at <domain>.top/xieyi/policy.html ("xieyi" is the pinyin for "agreement"). The websites share one template, the page source is tagged Simplified Chinese, they use the same download server, and invite links all look like xxx.<domain>.top/i/<invite code>. Version numbers are kept in sync at 1.8.x, the developer accounts are unrelated, and they all use Gmail. 11-06 Tested: RushDrama Pro's invite link goes to Play with referrer=inv_code=ANOtFc, and so does the parent app's.

The 8 builds add up to about 10.5M installs. The rhythm is clear: a batch in 4–May, another in 6–July, another at the end of September, with a few builds per batch and one country group per build. The "Pro" in the name is there to ride the "rush drama" search term the parent app already built up. The team has been releasing builds in batches for 9 months, which suggests the money adds up (inference; revenue is not public).

Where users come from

Invite code for ad-free time (confirmed). The parent app's TikTok account copy is blunt: "Log in with my invite link and watch for 10 minutes, and we both get ad-free rewards." Pro uses the same mechanic, and the Japanese X alt account came from it. For a free model, this costs almost nothing.

Paid acquisition (likely, no direct evidence). The privacy policy names AppsFlyer attribution and AppLovin MAX ad mediation (AdMob, Meta, Mintegral, Liftoff, Unity, etc.). That is the standard setup for buying installs and recouping through ads. The steep early curve that decays afterward also fits concentrated spending.

Riding others' ad spend (inference). Paid apps like ReelShort and DramaBox spend every day on Facebook and TikTok promoting drama clips. Several reviews describe the same thing: a US user wrote "The shows I see on Facebook are all here in the end," and a Japanese user wrote "Most of the shows in paid apps' ads are here too." Big companies spend money to hook people, and some of those people go looking for a free place to finish the show, which lands some of them here.

Store search and charts. Once it entered the top 20 of Japan's Entertainment chart, the chart itself became exposure.

Review prompts (inferred). 5 stars at 91%, steadily adding 50–90 ratings a day. The common approach is an in-app pop-up asking for a rating; not verified.

Why users stick around

Top products like ReelShort, DramaBox and ShortMax follow a "first few episodes free, then buy coins or subscribe" model. The frustration in Japanese reviews is exactly that: "I watched the ads and still couldn't get coins" and "I can only unlock a few episodes a day." RushDrama Pro does the reverse:

  • You can watch the whole thing. The most frequent phrase in reviews is "最後まで見れる" (you can watch to the finale), with ads inserted every few episodes and kept short.
  • No ads on day one for new users. Several reviews mention no ads on the first day, or none during the first show, with ads starting on day two. Get people hooked first, then add ads.
  • Japanese dubbing. Chinese short dramas are dubbed into Japanese ("吹き替え"). Reviews say "lots of complaints about the dubbing, but acceptable" and "the translation is sometimes off, but it's charming."

The negative reviews are also clustered, and anyone copying this should look at them first: many shows never finish and cut off midway; subtitles stop appearing from episode two; ads jump to payment scam pages; games are forced on you; and the same ad plays over and over.

Globally, this is a red ocean. It can break out in Japan because most of the Japan chart is big-company paywall products, and small-team free dubbed packs are still rare.

How many people know about it

Almost nobody. No press coverage, no public revenue. Searching X for "RushDrama" only turns up that Japanese alt account, plus pages auto-generated by APK download sites. But the "free short dramas plus clone packs" playbook is not a secret in going-global circles, and the charts in the Philippines, Southeast Asia, Latin America and Southern Europe are already crowded.

If it were you

B. This playbook really makes money: one team shipped 9 apps in 8 months, with 1,000 million-plus installs, and they keep launching. But your bottleneck is the creative and paid acquisition, not the code. Most countries' charts are already crowded. The open gaps are in languages where big studios dominate with paywalls and small teams still have few free voice-pack options.

Who it suits: small teams already running overseas tool or content apps, who can buy on AppLovin / Mintegral / Meta and work out eCPM and payback periods; teams that can get overseas licenses for finished Chinese short dramas (or already work in the short-drama business); and people who know a language that's still open and can polish AI dubbing and subtitles to "acceptable."

Who it doesn't suit: solo developers who can only code and have never bought traffic; anyone who can't get legitimate content and plans to scrape other people's shows (the review line "the shows from paid apps' ads are here too" is probably a grey zone around content sourcing, inference; copyright complaints and Play removal are this path's most direct risk); and anyone planning a subscription, since users here are there precisely because they don't want to pay.

How to build it: a video player app, with licensed Chinese short dramas, dubbed into the target language with AI and subtitles checked by hand. Everything is free, a short ad runs every few episodes, plus rewarded video for ad-free time. New users get no ads on the first show. Invite someone to watch for 10 minutes and both sides get ad-free time. Start with one language only, and nail "finish the series and keep subtitles working" — exactly where the negative reviews concentrate.

How to acquire users: start with a small paid acquisition budget. Use the most gripping twist clips from the shows as creative, with copy as simple as "watch the whole series to the finale for free." Aim keywords at search terms big companies have already taught the market (things like "ショートドラマ 無料"). Ship an invite code and let users post it to X and TikTok themselves. Once it gains traction, follow the same approach: same code, new language, new accounts, released in batches.

When to move: the sooner the better. Going by 11-06's charts, the German-speaking market (only 32 short-drama apps in the top 200 Entertainment, and the top 30 are all big companies) and Polish (39 apps, with the top 30 also mostly big companies) still look relatively open. Korean already has local short-drama apps like Vigloo and DramaVue, so it's not open. Japan's slot is already taken by it, and its sibling builds are being expanded by country every two or three months, so the next batch will likely reach these languages (inference).

Signs you've misread it: ① RushDrama Pro or its sibling builds get removed in bulk over the next month or two, showing the platform is clearing these packs and the window is closing; ② several identical free dubbed packs appear on the German or Polish charts within a month or two, and the gap is gone; ③ ReelShort or DramaBox launch an "watch ads for full series free" model in Japan, and the small team's edge disappears; ④ conversely, if its daily installs in Japan hold at several thousand and its rank doesn't slip, that shows free plus dubbing alone can hold a single language, which argues for moving faster.

RushDrama Pro: MiniSeries (com.rushdramapro.miniseries), and why it works

Google Play / Entertainment / developer account "X-tream" / store launch 2026-09-11 / research day 2026-11-06

Bottom line

It's not a standalone product. It's the Nth package in a Chinese team's front-package matrix for "free short dramas + ad monetization." The master app "Rush Drama: MiniSeries&episodes" (4.25M installs) already works in the Philippines. RushDrama Pro reuses the same code, the same library, and the same invite referral system, with a new developer account and a .top domain, and targets Japan, the US, Canada, Australia, and Singapore, where ad rates are higher and the master app has no coverage. It works by copying a proven playbook and splitting it by country. The product itself has nothing special.

The curve is stair-stepped: 10-04, 10-08/09, 10-12/13, 10-21/22 each jump 4–90k, with nearly flat days in between. Play installs are batch-updated every few days anyway, so single-day jumps mean little. The trend is clear, though: after launch it surges to over 20 million in 3–4 weeks, then slows week by week. That shape looks like concentrated paid acquisition plus invite-driven virality, not slow organic word of mouth.

2. Key finding: it's one package in a front-package matrix

Basis for identification: several packages host their privacy policies at /<domain>.top/xieyi/policy.html ("xieyi" is Pinyin for "agreement"); the websites use the same Portuguese-language template (title "Liberte sua imaginação", HTML lang="zh-CN", Chinese comments, all download servers at djow.topwig.cn); invite links follow xxx.<domain>.top/i/<invite code> and jump to Play with referrer=inv_code; all are free, ad-supported, with no in-app purchases; version numbers are synced at 1.8.x. The matrix totals about 10.5M installs. Each package roughly maps to a group of countries: Philippines, Indonesia, India, Thailand, France/Turkey, and the Japan/English-speaking markets. RushDrama Pro is one of the packages in batch 3 of this playbook, released alongside DramaShorts and NovaDrama in late September.

Evidence:

  • The master app's invite link an5.rushdrama.top/i/CbMpqZ was tested and jumps to play.google.com/...id=com.dramashorts.episodes&referrer=inv_code=CbMpqZ; RushDrama Pro's ueb5f.rushdramapro.top/i/ANOtFc jumps to id=com.rushdramapro.miniseries&referrer=inv_code=ANOtFc (2026-11-06 tested with curl).
  • The two websites rushdrama.top and rushdramapro.top use the same template, both setting djow.topwig.cn as the preconnected download domain.

3. Where users come from

  1. 邀请裂变(已确认)。TikTok 账号 @rush.drama71 的文案是「Join through my invite link, log in, and watch for 10 minutes. Then we can both get an ad-free reward.
  2. Paid acquisition (likely, no direct evidence). The privacy policy lists the AppsFlyer attribution SDK and AppLovin MAX mediation (AdMob, Meta, Liftoff, IronSource, Unity, Chartboost, DT Exchange, Mintegral), the standard setup for "buy installs → earn back through ads." The steep install curve in the first few weeks followed by decay fits concentrated spending. Our Meta, TikTok (Europe only), and Google ad libraries show nothing for rushdrama. It never charted in top grossing and isn't on our tracking list, so a lack of results doesn't mean it wasn't advertised.
  3. Borrowing the master brand and UGC on TikTok (indirect). The master app "Rush Drama" has a batch of AI GL (yuri) short-drama clip accounts on Philippine TikTok, using #rushdrama, #rushdramaapp, and #aiglseries, with 10k to 300k views per clip. Users write "Free AI Dramas — iPhone: Nova Drama / SmartPhone: Rush Drama" (@fangirl.mikay). YouTube has videos like "Rush Drama Quick Review," "Is Rush Drama Safe and Legit," and "Can You Earn Real Money on Rush Drama? The Truth About Its Coins." RushDrama Pro uses the "Pro" name, which directly picks up store traffic for "rush drama" searches. Almost all of this content is for the master app; no TikTok videos specifically about Pro were found.
  4. Store search and charts (inferred). The bar to reach the top 20 of Japan's Play Entertainment Top Free is not high; once charted, it gets chart exposure, creating a positive loop.
  5. Review solicitation (inferred). 5 stars at 91%, with a steady 50 to 90 new ratings per day. A common approach is an in-app prompt asking for a rating; not verified.

4. Why users come and stay

  • Fully free, no per-episode charges. The leading products ReelShort, DramaBox, and ShortMax work as "first few episodes free, then buy coins or subscribe," and per-episode paywalls are users' biggest complaint. This matrix takes a different route: fully free, earning through interstitial ads and rewarded videos, with inviting others earning ad-free time. The privacy policy mentions "check-in and watch-time rewards in coins," using coins and check-ins to drive retention.
  • Content localized with dubbing or subtitles. Japanese users are sharing Japanese-dubbed versions of Chinese short dramas; the website displays Portuguese titles and synopses. The library is bought in bulk and reused across the matrix by language.
  • Timing. Short-drama overseas expansion is already a red ocean in 2026: ReelShort 307M, DramaBox 307M, FreeReels 246M, and TikTok's PineDrama 84M installs (googleplay library). FreeReels, Melolo, and DramaWave have already educated users on the "free short drama" category. Small teams entering now are chasing long-tail countries, long-tail keywords, and ad traffic in high-CPM regions.

6. Differentiation

Looking at the whole category, the product itself has almost no differentiation; the only differences from the sibling packs are the package name, the developer account, and the target country. The real difference is in the playbook:

  • The business model is free with ads (IAA), not pay-per-episode (IAP). This sets it apart within the category, but FreeReels and Melolo were already doing this, so it is not unique to it.
  • On distribution it splits the matrix by country: one pack per group of countries, which lowers the risk of any single account being banned and lets it chase each country's category charts separately. The "Pro" pack was assigned to Japan and English-speaking high-CPM markets.
  • For virality it uses "invite someone to watch for 10 minutes → both get ad-free time." The cost is nearly zero, which suits a free model.

These are why it took off. It borrows unit economics and a brand term that the original had already validated; it did not build a better product.

7. How many people know about it

Almost nobody knows about it. No media coverage, no public revenue. Our X corpus (x-radar) returns 0 posts for "RushDrama." What turns up are APK aggregator sites (auto-generated pages on softonic, apkpure, cnet, appbrain, popsilla, etc.) and invite codes posted by a Japanese alt account. But the "free drama + alt-account matrix" playbook itself is already crowded in overseas-app circles; the "rush/drama" name alone is being fought over by packs from at least 6 different teams.

8. What others can borrow

  • One codebase plus a library of purchased or dubbed drama content, listed under several developer accounts and several .top domains split by country, with each pack chasing the category chart of only one or two countries. After one batch hits its peak, another batch launches: one in April, 6–July, and one in September.
  • On the brand term, it runs a "parent + Pro/Lite" pair to ride a search term that is already gaining traction.
  • On the free model, it uses "ad-free time" as the invite reward, building virality without spending money.
  • High-CPM regions (Japan, US, Canada, Australia, NZ) get a dedicated pack, so ad monetization pays back quickly.

9. Still unclear

  • Whether it did paid acquisition and how much: our ad library does not cover this, and the Meta Ad Library web version was not checked.
  • Revenue: no in-app purchases; ad revenue is not public. Estimating from IAA unit prices in Japan and English-speaking markets is not possible because there is no DAU or ARPDAU data, so no estimate was made.
  • Whether the sibling packs belong to one company or to an agency / alt-account distribution service serving several clients: the same template and download domain mean the same backend, but that does not prove the same legal entity.
  • Whether iOS's Nova Drama (Ihsan Ozturkmen, 2026-04, Philippines Top Free 12) is the iOS version of this matrix: TikTok users recommend it alongside Rush Drama, but no technical link was found.
  • Retention: our database has no review samples for it.
