# A college student's seed oil scanner: Tallow's users came from TikTok "food panic" videos

**What it is** A food and cosmetics barcode scanner app built on an "anti-seed oil / MAHA" stance. Scan a product and it tells you whether it contains seed oils, additives, and detected contaminants.

**Why it took off** The founder ran several TikTok accounts that posted voiceover videos along the lines of "X fast food tested positive for toxic substances," ending with "Comment Tallow." Several of them passed a million views from 5 to June, driving people into the app. The name and stance speak directly to people who think Yuka's scores are wrong.

**C** **How you could follow it** Don't build another seed oil scanner. Carry the playbook over to other niche categories with a "blacklist" angle, such as pet food, baby food, or cosmetics: build the product on an open-source product database plus an LLM that pulls test reports, then run a few accounts riding the week's news and big-brand exposé voiceovers to drive installs.

C grade: the space is already packed (Yuka, Bobby Approved, Olive, Seed Oil Scout, and a long tail of indie developers). The founder's own disclosed revenue is only $1.2K/month, and the TikTok traffic that carried it dried up by June. The playbook is worth learning, but copying the product isn't worth it. Tallow is a food barcode scanner used by American "anti-seed oil" people, built by a college student. Its features are close to a dozen similar apps. It got traction through 4 TikTok accounts the founder ran: from 2026 5 to June, those accounts piggybacked on fast-food brand news to post a batch of exposé videos, totaling about 21M views. It now earns about $1.2K a month. The space is crowded and the first wave of traffic has passed. What's worth learning is the playbook; the product itself isn't worth copying.

### A Wendy's video with 2.63M views

On 2026 Jun 8, the TikTok account @tallowapp posted a 43-second voiceover. The first three lines: "Wendy's is getting roasted this week. Third-party testing found 3M nanograms of phthalates in its burgers, a chemical linked to infertility, the highest level in this study." It then describes how beef passes through plastic tubing and conveyor belts in the plant, and that the vinyl gloves workers wear contain 37% plasticizer. The last line: "Link in bio to find safer restaurants." The video title is one line: **Comment Tallow to find safer brands ✅✅** .

By Nov 6, the video had 2.63M views, 55k likes, and 45k shares. The top comment (12k likes): "But Wendy's patties are square," with a picture attached. The patty in the image wasn't Wendy's, and most people didn't care. The second-ranked comment: "Guess I can only eat Wendy's now, I can't afford to have kids anymore 😭".

Over the following two weeks, the account posted several more: Domino's crust "tested positive for the pesticide in lice shampoo" (6-21M views), six chocolate brands "started using lab-grown cacao" (6-132M), and Dunkin's eggs "are liquid mix propped up with soybean oil" (6-253M). Each one closed with the same line: find safer alternatives on Tallow.

### What it is

A barcode scanner. Scan packaged food, drinks, supplements, or cosmetics and get a 0–100 score, broken down into seed oils, additives (checked against the EU ban list and FDA labeling), processing level, and plastic contact. Users can set their own standards, and there's a kids mode. The paid tier adds lab test data and a map that rates restaurants by what oil they cook with. Scanning is free with no limit; the subscription is $9.99/month, or about $30–$40 a year (the in-app purchase range listed on Google Play is $4.99–$29.99).

Its stance is written into the name. Tallow is beef fat, and in the American MAHA ("Make America Healthy Again") and anti-seed oil circles the word itself is a signal. Founder Maddox Schmidlkofer said on his personal site that he built it because Yuka "gives Coca-Cola a higher score than raw beef tallow." Yuka's scores are based on a European nutrition scoring system and don't distinguish between oil types, which people in this crowd see as wrong.

The build is cheap too. The product database is the open-source Open Food Facts, and after a scan it first shows a preliminary score. In the background it calls the OpenAI API with web search to pull test reports for that product from Oasis, the Florida health department, EWG, and Consumer Reports, then adds a "Sources" section to the page about ten seconds later. The front end is Expo, and the back end runs entirely on Supabase. One person can build a scanner "backed by lab data."

### How big it is now

| items | Numbers | Sources |
|---|---|---|
| iOS release | 2026-05-17 | App Store |
| iOS ratings | 525 reviews, 4.77 stars | App Store,11-06 |
| Listed on Google Play | 2026-08-02 | Google Play |
| Play installs | 10,295(10-29) → 12,379(11-06), +1,484 in a week | Google Play, daily records |
| Play ratings count | 747 → 892,9 days +145 | Google Play |
| Play ranking | US Food & Drink Top Grossing #27–30, charted every day since 10-31 | Google Play charts |
| Revenue | 6,400+ users, $1.2K MRR | Founder's personal site, no date given |

The ratings-to-installs ratio is about 7%, very high for a scanner app. That suggests most people came in through the videos and went straight to install (in-app rating prompts may also play a part). The US Food & Drink Top Grossing bar is not high, so #28 and over $1K a month fit. Based on $1.2K MRR and its price, my estimate is roughly 100 to 400-odd paying users, depending on the monthly/annual split.

### Where users come from

**Almost all of it runs on the founder's own TikTok accounts.** I found 4 of them (TikHub, 11-06):

| Account | Bio | Followers | Combined views on the videos we pulled |
|---|---|---|---|
| @tallowapp | Brand account, "Making a food transparency push" | 12k | About 10.9M |
| @salami7738 | Username is literally "Tallow is good" | 2,021 | About 8.72M |
| @tallow.app | "All food nowadays is poison" | 6,349 | About 1.34M |
| @magicmaddox | Founder himself | 9,044 | ~80k since May |

There's no direct evidence that the founder runs the last two alt accounts (my inference: the copy all points to Tallow, and posting times line up with the brand account). The About page is blunt: "We create viral videos that help bring awareness on the topic."

The content formula is fixed: **this week's food news or a big brand + a scary chemical name + the closer "Comment Tallow"** . The brands are ones everyone has eaten: Dunkin', Wendy's, Domino's, Buc-ee's, Chick-fil-A, Pringles. The news hooks are Moms Across America pesticide tests, 3D-printed meat, and lab-grown food. They don't make product tutorials, and the app only shows up in the last line.

**But that wave is over.** All the million-view videos landed between 5-27 and 6-25, roughly the first month after the iOS launch. From September on, most posts pulled a few thousand views. The new @tallowapp videos in November (for example the Chipotle "Play-Doh steak" one, 11-05) got 500–1,800 views. On Play, it's now about two hundred installs a day, mostly long-tail traffic and store search.

Other channels are supporting players:

- **Website SEO** : tallow.app publishes comparison pieces like "Best seed oil scanner apps" and "Is Yuka accurate?", and each product has a barcode-generated page to catch long-tail searches.

- **Creators** : 10-29, a sign-language food creator with 188k followers posted "Download Tallow from the App Store" and got 29k views. Not much reach.

- **Endorsements** : 9-15 integrated the full Seed Oil Free Alliance certified product list.

- **Product Hunt** : launched by the founder, 4 votes, didn't drive much.

- **Not found** : there are no Meta ads for it, no one discusses it on X, and no media coverage. A few videos have high views and low likes (the Totino's one: 215k views, 1,086 likes), which may mean TikTok Spark Ads boosting. Unverified.

One 9-07 one-star App Store review says it "paid Reddit bot accounts to post scary stuff in the health subreddits, with Tallow links in the posts." That's a user's accusation and unverified. If true, it's the same playbook moved to Reddit.

### Why users stay and pay

The people who come in are moved by "food is poison" videos. They don't want a more accurate nutrition score. They want **a scorer that takes their side** . The good App Store reviews mostly say the same thing:

> "I like finding it on TikTok, and it says there's lab data. This feature really works." (5-19, titled "I love finding the hidden poisons")

> "Similar to Yuka, but it actually checks seed oils, plastics and processing level." (5-17)

> "I've tried Scout and Olive, this one is free with the same features." (9-01)

The bad reviews cluster around the free-versus-paid line too: "The website says free, but the signup flow uses all kinds of tricks to push a subscription," "The first thing I scanned said avocado oil is bad," "Searching products requires a subscription." (8-11, 7-01)

### Who it's competing with

This category was already crowded. Tallow arrived 2026 years late and sits at the bottom of its peer group in scale:

| Product | Scale | How Tallow differs |
|---|---|---|
| Yuka | Play 43.9M installs, iOS US 102k ratings | Mass-market product, ignores oil type; Tallow's whole positioning is the opposite |
| Bobby Approved | Play 1.2M, iOS US 166k ratings | Backed by influencer Bobby Parrish, free, seed oils flagged outright but only yes/no |
| Fig | 850k on Play | General dietary-restriction scanner |
| Ivy | 337k on Play | Focuses on ultra-processing level, not seed oils |
| Seed Oil Scout | Play 285k, US Food Top Grossing #20 | Centers on a restaurant map, paid |
| Olive | Play 94k, launched 2025-09 | Seed oils + restaurants + heavy metals, nearly the same features as Tallow |
| Oasis | iOS | Focuses on lab heavy-metal data; part of Tallow's test data is pulled from it |

Further down is a long tail: on Reddit's r/StopEatingSeedOils, at least 5 indie developers have posted "I built a seed oil scanner app," and over the past 2025–2026 years more than twenty apps called "Food Scanner" have launched on the US iOS store. In this crowd, Tallow's product has no clear edge. What set it apart were those TikTok accounts.

### If it were you

**C: Worth learning from, not worth following the product.** The seed oil scanner is a crowded niche. The one person who published revenue (≈$1.2K a month) relied on a TikTok wave that faded by June. What's worth learning is the acquisition method, not the product.

**Who it suits** : one or two people who can shoot video and write voiceover, and who have another category where "the mass product gets it wrong and a community cares a lot." Directions to try (inference): pet food, infant formula and baby food, cosmetics and sunscreen, drinking water, supplements. In these categories a community has a clear blacklist (certain preservatives, certain ingredients), but mass-market apps don't distinguish.

**Who it doesn't suit** : anyone wanting to build yet another seed oil or MAHA scanner (Yuka, Bobby Approved, Olive and Seed Oil Scout already hold the mass-market, influencer and feature positions); anyone who writes code but won't make video (one person can ship a product in a week in this space, with no technical moat); anyone uneasy with "scary food content" (this playbook sits close to fear marketing, and people are already calling it out in the comments and reviews).

**How to build it** : pick a community stance and name the product after its code words. Underneath, use an open-source product database plus an LLM with web search to pull test reports, building the "has lab data" layer. Keep scanning free, put test data and "alternative recommendations" behind the paywall, and price a one-time annual subscription at $30–40.

**How to get users** : run 3–4 accounts at once: one brand account, one or two "X is good"-style alt accounts, and one founder account. Double down on whichever starts to take off. Each post rides this week's news or a big brand everyone has eaten, closing with "Comment X." Get the material out within a day or two of the news breaking. Publish comparison pieces and product pages on the website at the same time to catch the branded searches the videos create.

**When to move** : this kind of content runs on news momentum. The MAHA topic may stay hot for a while in the US political cycle (inference), so earlier is better. If you switch categories, first post 30 videos in a row and see whether any break 500k.

**Signs you've got it wrong** : ① after a month of posting dozens of videos, none pass 100k views, which means the category's fear hook isn't strong enough; ② TikTok starts adding fact-check labels or throttling this "food exposé" content (Tallow's new videos already get only a few hundred views; you need to tell whether the accounts are burnt out or the platform is suppressing them); ③ conversely, if Tallow keeps gaining daily Play installs and climbing the grossing charts without a new viral hit, store search and word of mouth are doing the work, and this niche is bigger than it looks.

## Why Tallow: Healthy Food Scanner (com.schmidlkofer.tallow) managed to take off

> 2026-11-06 research. Data sources: Google Play / App Store / Meta ads library (agent-im server), iTunes lookup, TikHub (TikTok), x-radar, Jina/Exa web search.

### One line

Tallow is a "anti-seed-oil" food and cosmetics barcode scanner app (the MAHA version of Yuka), built by Maddox Schmidlkofer, an indie developer and student at Purdue. It took off almost entirely through a **self-run TikTok account network** making "food panic / big-brand exposé" short videos (the first viral wave ran from 5 to June, with the 4 accounts totaling about 21M views), then funneled the traffic to iOS (launched in May) and Android (launched in August). The product itself is narrowly positioned: Yuka ignores the type of oil, while Tallow treats seed oils as a veto and adds lab test data and a restaurant map. The scale is small: the founder himself reports **6,400+ users and $1.2K MRR** .

### 1. Basic data

| items | Value | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Listed on Play | 2026-08-02 | Data card |
| iOS release | 2026-05-17 (id6769135569, v2.4.3,2026-11-02 update) | iTunes lookup |
| Play installs | 10,295(10-29) → 12,379(11-06), +7 in 1,484 days, about 200/day | googleplay library app_day |
| Play ratings count | 747 → 892 (+145 over 9 days, 12–27 reviews per day), rating/install rate about 7% | googleplay library |
| iOS ratings | 525 reviews, 4.77 stars | iTunes lookup 2026-11-06 |
| Rank | US Play Food & Drink Top Grossing #27–30 (on the chart daily since 10-31), Top Free #150–181; other 14 stores Top Grossing #73–77 (same aggregated chart) | googleplay library chart_rank |
| iOS ranking | Not on any chart in the US store; only #97–190 on Health charts in small countries such as Oman, Norway, India, and Pakistan | appstore library |
| Revenue | Founder's personal site states **6,400+ users, $1.2K MRR** (date unknown); subscription $9.99/month or $30–40/year, IAP $4.99–29.99 | maddoxschmidlkofer.com/projects/tallow;tallow.app/blog/best-seed-oil-scanner-apps |
| Business model | Scanning is free and unlimited; a few features (lab data, restaurant map, etc.) are behind a paywall; does not sell data or run ads (self-reported) | tallow.app/about, why-we-built-tallow |

Note: the US Food & Drink Top Grossing chart has a very low bar, so the revenue implied by rank #28 and $1.2K MRR (the two ends combined) is consistent. The "high willingness to pay" part of the recall scoring holds (a rating/install rate of 7% is very high, showing the core users were won over by the content), but absolute revenue is tiny.

### 2. Competitors

| Product | Platform | Launched | Scale | How Tallow differs |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Yuka | iOS/Android | 2017(iOS)/2019 | Play 43.9M installs; iOS US 101,934 ratings | A French product; the 60% score is Nutri-Score, which does not distinguish the type of oil. Tallow's whole positioning is the opposite of Yuka: "Yuka rates Coke higher than tallow" (the founder's words). |
| Bobby Approved | iOS/Android | 2021-06 | Play 1.2M; iOS US 165,872 ratings | Backed by influencer Bobby Parrish; free, and seed oils are simply disqualified, but it is yes/no only, with no lab data or restaurant coverage. |
| Seed Oil Scout | iOS/Android | 2022-08 | Play 285k; iOS US 28,563 ratings; US Food Top Grossing #20 | Its core is a restaurant map (claimed about 45k locations), paid at $25–48/year. Tallow started with packaged-food scanning and added a restaurant map later. |
| Oasis(oasishealth.app) | iOS | — | Ranked #115–168 on small-country charts | Focuses on lab heavy-metal and contaminant data, $47–70/year. Tallow's contaminant data itself came from having GPT with web search prioritize Oasis and Florida health department reports. |
| Olive – Holistic Food Scanner | Android/iOS | 2025-09 | 94k on Play | Also flags seed oils, restaurants, and some heavy metals, $30–70/year. The closest direct competitor. |
| Ivy: Processed Food Scanner | iOS/Android | 2024-08 | Play 337k; iOS US 9,152 ratings | Focuses on ultra-processed food (UPF), not a seed-oil stance. |
| Fig / GoCoCo / Trash Panda / Exposr / Scout / KaLens / Seed Oil Tracker / Nutron etc. | Multiple platforms | 2019–2026 | Fig Play 850k, the rest mostly in the thousands to tens of thousands | Similar scanners; many indie developers self-promote on r/StopEatingSeedOils (at least 5 different Reddit authors have posted "I built a seed oil scanner app") |
| Open Food Facts | Open source / web | 2012 | Underlying data | Tallow's product database is this one; Tier 1 queries OFF directly |

Bottom line: this is a **crowded niche** . Tallow is a latecomer that entered 2026 years later, and its scale is at the bottom among competitors. It did not take off because of novel features.

### 3. Growth tactics (evidence found)

#### 3.1 self-run TikTok account network: main channel (confirmed)

TikHub found 4 linked accounts (2026-11-06):

| Account | Nickname / bio | Followers | Posts | Views (total of pulled posts) | Peak video |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| @tallowapp | Tallowhealth "Making a food transparency push… App Below" | 12,072 | 77 | About 10.9M | 06-25 Dunkin 2.85M; 06-08 Wendy's "Comment Tallow to find safer brands" 2.63M; 06-13 chocolate 1.68M; 06-02 Domino's 1.02M |
| @salami7738 | Username is literally "Tallow is good" | 2,021 | 62 | About 8.72M | 06-09 3D-printed meat 3.27M; 08-03 ramen 1.44M; 05-27 "3d printed meat… Tallow makes avoiding toxic additives…" 1.21M |
| @tallow.app | "All food nowadays is poison" | 6,349 | 60 | About 1.34M | 09-19 lab-grown meat 450k; 09-30 3D-printed meat 320k |
| @magicmaddox | Founder himself: "Educating the masses about the toxic chemicals…" | 9,044 | 85 | ~80k since May | 05-07 Dunkin eggs contain soybean oil 19k |

- Playbook: riding fast-food and big-brand names (Dunkin, Wendy's, Chick-fil-A, Domino's, Buc-ee's, In-N-Out, Pringles) plus the week's food news (Moms Across America pesticide testing, Hidden Valley ranch, 3D-printed meat, lab-grown food) to make panic/exposé voiceovers, with captions ending "Comment Tallow / Find safer swaps on the tallow app ✅".

- Timing: iOS launched in 5-17, with posts coming in a steady stream from 5-24. **Late May to June was the boom** (every million-view video above falls between 5-27 and 6-25). Since then, per-video views have dropped to hundreds or a few thousand, and new @tallowapp videos in November mostly got 500–1,600 views. So **the first wave of upside is over** , and the roughly 200 daily installs on Play now come from the long tail and store search.

- About page self-description: "We create viral videos that help bring awareness on the topic" (tallow.app/about). The account network was deliberate.

- Some videos have very high views and very low likes (e.g., 08-25 Totino's with 215k views and only 1,086 likes; 06-25 Dunkin with 2.85M views and 30k likes). They may have been boosted with Spark Ads, but **unverified** (our TikTok ad library only covers Europe).

#### 3.2 paid creator (one confirmed case)

@samalouisaa (188k followers, a sign-language food creator with a business email in her bio) posted "Download @Tallowhealth on the App Store!" with 10-29 29k views. This shows they started recruiting mid-tier creators for voiceovers, though the scale is modest.

#### 3.3 SEO / content sites (confirmed)

tallow.app has a blog and product detail pages (/products/<product>-<barcode>), plus a "How we score" methodology page. It published "best seed oil scanner apps" comparison posts (2026-10-01), "Is Yuka accurate", and "Where food scanner apps get their lab results", targeting long-tail keywords. In Jina search for "seed oil scanner", tallow.app already ranks near the top. Play links carry `utm_source=marketing_website`, and the site has a download banner.

#### 3.4 partnerships / endorsements (confirmed)

2026-09-15 integrates all certified products from the Seed Oil Free Alliance (with Dr. Andrew Weil as adviser), serving as both a feature and a cross-promotion.

#### 3.5 Product Hunt (confirmed, ineffective)

The founder self-hunted, got 4 votes and daily rank #155, and it brought no real traffic (hunted.space).

#### 3.6 what I didn't find

- Meta ads library: no Tallow advertisers (checked by name / package / domain in the metaads library).

- X: x-radar shows 90 mentions of "tallow app" and "seed oil scanner" in the last 0 days; no big accounts or media coverage.

- No evidence of giveaways or review-begging (Play rating/install ratio of 7% is high, probably from an in-app rating prompt, which is normal).

### 4. Why it took off

1. **Timing: MAHA / anti-seed-oil is huge in the US right now, 2025–2026** (RFK Jr. pushing "Make America Healthy Again", fast-food chains switching to beef tallow in the news), so there's built-in demand for "food panic" content and search. The name itself is Tallow, a scene in-joke, and #tallow alone already has big traffic on TikTok.

2. **Distribution: the founder runs the product like a media account.** 4 accounts, 21M views, tying fast-food headlines to "use Tallow to find safer alternatives". The comment hook "Comment Tallow" turns engagement into downloads. This is the main source of users.

3. **Retention/payment: a clear stance matters more than features.** The people coming in were moved by "food is poison" content; they want a scorer that's on their side. Yuka gives butter 30 points and doesn't mention soybean oil, which this crowd sees as wrong. Tallow can set its own standards (seed oils, dyes, kids mode), give Meets / Doesn't meet verdicts, and cite lab sources. The paid features (lab data, restaurant map) are exactly what this crowd cares about. A rating of 4.77 stars and a rating-to-install ratio of 7% suggest high user satisfaction.

4. **Cheap to build:** Expo + Supabase + Open Food Facts + OpenAI Responses API (with web search pulling lab data from Oasis, the Florida health department, EWG, Consumer Reports). One student could build a scanner with "lab data". The founder previously ran a cloud gaming site with 50k users that sold for $15K (maddox.cloud), so they have indie dev and traffic experience.

### 5. Differentiation

- Versus Yuka/Fig/Ivy: **seed oils as an automatic fail + customizable standards + lab contaminant data** , with a stance aimed at the MAHA/carnivore crowd.

- Versus Bobby Approved: not just yes/no; it has 0–100 scores with reasons, and lab data.

- Versus Seed Oil Scout: starts with packaged food, restaurant map later.

- Versus Oasis/Olive: nearly identical features (Olive also covers seed oils, restaurants, heavy metals). The real difference is **lower price (scanning is free) and content distribution** .

**Is the differentiation why it took off? Partly.** The "seed oils vs Yuka" positioning gives it a clear content hook and SEO angle, but functionally it overlaps heavily with Olive, Seed Oil Scout, and Bobby Approved. What sets it apart from the pile of Reddit self-promoted seed-oil apps is the TikTok account network, not the product itself.

### 6. Visibility and copycats

- **Visibility: it's circulating in small circles.** The founder wrote on their personal site that it has $1.2K MRR and 6,400+ users, but there's no TrustMRR listing, no big X accounts or press coverage (x-radar 0 posts; search only returns their own site; Trustpilot 2 reviews; PH 4 votes). Many people have seen the TikTok videos, but few know it's a business.

- **Copycats:** None found specifically copying Tallow. But the category itself is full of copycats: on Reddit r/StopEatingSeedOils, at least 5 indie devs promote their own seed-oil scanners (Seed Oil Tracker, KaLens, evooGOD's scanner, the 2024-year-old Seed Oil Food Scanner, etc.). In the US iOS store, over twenty "Food Scanner"-named apps launched in the 2025–2026 years (Nutron, Ellē, Totsy, AVO, EatClean…).

### 7. What others can learn

- CTAs that treat the app as a media account: don't shoot product tutorials; shoot "big brand exposé / this week's food news", ending with "Comment X / find alternatives in the X app". Post across a multi-account network (brand account + "X is good" side accounts + founder account) and see which one gains traction.

- Pick a specific point where an established mass-market product (Yuka) is clearly "wrong", take a scene stance (anti-seed-oil), and use scene in-joke words as the name.

- Use the OFF open-source database and an LLM with web search to aggregate "lab data". One person can build a data layer that looks deeper than older products. Then add endorsement from a certifying body (Seed Oil Free Alliance).

- SEO through comparison blogs and product detail pages to capture long-tail traffic beyond the brand searches TikTok generates.

### 8. Uncertain

- Timing of the $1.2K MRR figure is unclear; not known whether it covers iOS+Android combined or iOS only. November actual revenue not verified.

- Whether the high-view, low-like videos used TikTok Spark Ads is unverified.

- Whether @salami7738 and @tallow.app are run by the founder personally is inferred (basis: the handle "Tallow is good", copy all pointing to the Tallow App, posting times synced with @tallowapp), not directly verified.

- The source split of ~200 Play installs/day (store search vs TikTok vs website) is unknown; the Play listing date 08-02 may have been reset by a metadata change.

- No ranking data for the US iOS store, so real iOS downloads are unclear (525 rating).
