The ads show family photos, but the money gets paid first and the feature isn't there: how Kutto makes money on Turkey's utility charts
What it is An app that turns templates into AI portraits, family photos and birthday videos. Upload a photo and it generates the result. Weekly subscriptions plus coins; in-app purchases run $6.99–$49.99.
Why it took off It didn't really catch fire organically. The installs come from Facebook ads that get switched on and off depending on whether they pay back, and the money comes from first-purchase payments and auto-renewals in cheap-traffic countries like Turkey and Mexico. Put in a low-barrier utility category, 120k installs are enough to chart on the top-grossing list every day.
DHow you could follow it Not recommended. If you really want to try, sell one specific scenario (say, family photos), make sure the app actually delivers what the ads promise, offer the first generation free, put the cancel-subscription option in plain sight, and test with Meta ads on a small budget in cheap countries. Stop if the numbers don't work.

A Singapore company put an AI portrait app on Google Play. The store listing calls it a "text-to-image tool," but the ads sell family photos and birthday videos. Less than four months after launch it has 120k installs and sits on the utility top-grossing charts in Turkey and Mexico every day. How it makes money, who it's competing with, and whether you should copy it are covered below.
A comment from Sep 21
On Sep 21, 2026, a user named Craykray left a review on Kutto's Google Play page: "It's a scam. I downloaded it because it advertised a family portrait feature, but then it made me pay and didn't have the option." He added that canceling his subscription kept erroring.
A month later, on Oct 18, another user, Katerina Geleva, wrote: "I paid to create three birthday videos, but the app used up all my coins without generating a single video."
These two reviews say more about what Kutto sells than the store page does. A warm family photo and a birthday video for loved ones get people in the door. Inside, they pay first, subscribe weekly, and get charged in coins on top.
What it is
On the store page, Kutto is a very generic "AI image generation tool": type text, pick a "starting direction," generate an image. The keywords are posters, wallpapers, design, and it's filed under Tools (TOOLS), not photography or art and design.
The website kuttoai.com is blunter: "Kutto turns trends into ready-to-use templates," turning AI tricks that go viral on social media into templates, with "no complex prompts," for ordinary people who don't know how to write prompts.
What it actually sells, judging from the ads and reviews: upload a photo and a template turns it into an AI portrait, family photo, or birthday video. Its Facebook ad page is called "Kutto AI Vdieo & Photo" ("Video" is misspelled), and a video ad title reads "AI magic to generate your ideal photo instantly! ✨ Upload photos and it will be generated".
The developer is SINGAPORE IDEAL META TECHNOLOGY PTE. LTD, registered in Singapore in 2022 May. The same entity also runs a short-drama app on iOS, DramaDive, which charts in the entertainment top-grossing lists of small countries like Bulgaria, Slovenia and Bahrain. One entity running two going-global acquisition plays, an "AI template" app and a "short drama" app, looks a lot like how Chinese going-global teams operate (inference).
How fast it grew
| Metric | Sources | |
|---|---|---|
| Launched | 2026-07-15, the version has stayed at 1.0.1, with no new release since Jul 31 | Google Play |
| September | 9-03 about 8,100 → 9-25 about 54k, 2,500–3,500 per day | Third-party estimate |
| Early October | From 10-01 to 10-08, weekly growth of 35k, with two single-day jumps of about 11k, on 10-04 and 10-08 | Third-party estimate |
| 10-08 to 10-21 | Only about 6,000 in two weeks, almost flat | Third-party estimate |
| Last 7 days | 10-29 113k → 11-06 120k, +7,672 over 7 days, about 1,000 per day | Google Play,11-06 |
| Charts | Only charted on the utility top-grossing lists: Turkey ranks 70–92 (11-06 at #85), Mexico ranks 91–107, Brazil ranks 138–158 on and off. Never charted on Top Free or the overall chart. | Google Play, 10-29 to 11-06 |
| Pricing | In-app purchase per item $6.99–$49.99 | Google Play |
| Rating | 192 ratings, 3.1 stars | Google Play,11-06 |
The curve starts, stops, and restarts, which looks less like organic word of mouth and more like ad budgets being switched on and off based on payback. Whether the two flat weeks in October were a deliberate pause, creative fatigue, or store enforcement can't be told from outside.
The ratings are more interesting: of 192 ratings, 1 ★ has 90, 5 ★ has 101, and 2 to 4 ★ has none at all. On Nov 3, the 1 ★ count went from 92 to 83, and the 5 ★ count went from 92 to 106. Real complaints and batches of 5-star reviews are mixed together, so someone is probably managing the ratings (inference, no direct evidence). The number of ratings is only 0.16% of installs, and users brought in by paid acquisition rarely leave reviews on their own.
Where users come from: Facebook ads, almost nothing else
The only channel that can be confirmed is Facebook / Meta video ads. The ad page exists, the creative pitches "upload a photo and get your ideal photo instantly," and some reviewers say they came from the family-photo ad. I couldn't find how many ads ran or in which countries.
Organic channels are zero: searching "kutto ai" on TikTok turns up no relevant videos, nobody mentions it on X, there's no press coverage, and no Reddit threads. (Don't confuse it with the long-video clipping tool of the same name, Kutto AI.)
Where it puts its effort is in the store, with two moves:
- Decoupling description from selling points: The store listing is a generic text-to-image tool, which passes review. Selling points like family photos and birthday videos, which involve faces and emotion, appear only in the ads and inside the app.
- Category arbitrage: put it in Utilities. In the Turkey store's Utilities Top Grossing, most of the top 100 are VPNs, "who viewed my profile" apps, antivirus and cleaner tools, and a bit of subscription revenue is enough to land you at #70–90. 120k installs. In Photo & Video you're nothing, but in Utilities you can chart every day.
Where the money comes from
Weekly subscriptions plus coin packs. Meta traffic in Turkey, Mexico and Brazil is cheap, so only a small share of users need to pay to earn back the ad spend. It stayed on those countries' utility top-grossing charts from late October through Nov 6, which suggests the revenue is sustained, but the ranking can't be converted into a dollar figure, so daily revenue can't be estimated (unverified).
The money comes mostly from first payments and auto-renewals, not long-term loyal users. The reviews cluster around three complaints: "generated photos don't look like me," "there's no way to cancel the subscription in-app and emails go unanswered" (Carol Doyle, 9-16,4 people found it helpful), and "coins were deducted but no image was generated." This model earns money, but it piles up one-star reviews and refunds, and Google Play has explicit policies on subscription cancellation and billing, so its lifespan won't be long.
Who it's competing with
Many, and most follow the same playbook: upload a photo, run it through an AI template to get a portrait or video, subscribe weekly, and list it under utilities.
| Product | Launched | Scale (Google Play, 11-06) | Comparing with Kutto |
|---|---|---|---|
| Chatlulu: AI Video & Photo | 2025-08 | 690k installs, #41 on Turkey's utility top-grossing chart | Same chart, same model, a year earlier, about 6× the size |
| VideoPose — Move Your Photo | 2026-09 | 96k, +7k over 34 days; #98 on Turkey's utility top-grossing chart | Only does "make photos move," growing faster than Kutto |
| Zuvia AI - Video Art Maker | 2026-10 | 118k, +7k over 83 days; #7 on India's utility top-grossing chart | Matched Kutto's cumulative total in a single month |
| Veya AI Photo Playground | 2026-09 | 78k, +29k in 7 days | Similar photo-template apps |
| Boomio - AI Movie Templates | 2026-07 | 38k; #46 on Italy's utility top-grossing chart | Launched in the same period with the same playbook, targeting Europe |
| Pawfex AI | 2025-10 | 73k; #73 on the US utility top-grossing chart | Pet-video templates, also from a Singapore entity |
| Faceplay / PixVerse | 2021 / 2024 | 38M / 80M | Long-running template apps and in-house model platforms, two orders of magnitude larger |
Above them are big-company tools like Remini, Hypic and Picsart, which have had AI portraits built in for a long time, plus Gemini (Nano Banana) and ChatGPT's free image generation. The AI tricks that go viral on social media mostly come from these models, and users can get them for free by typing a sentence. Kutto sells only "you don't have to write that sentence."
Kutto is mid-to-low in scale in this category. Two direct rivals appear on the same Turkey chart, and Zuvia and VideoPose, which launched later, are both growing faster than it is. Nobody is following Kutto. It is one of the followers itself.
If it were you
Verdict (D): Worth understanding, but not recommended as something to copy. Kutto makes money through a distribution playbook anyone can copy (cheap countries, utility category, emotional creative, aggressive paywall). The product itself has nothing others lack. The category keeps spawning copycats every month, and big companies' free features sit on top of it.
Who it suits: Teams that already have a going-global acquisition pipeline, with attribution, subscription and coin billing, and several entities that can publish. Treat this kind of app as a test shell: scale it if it runs, swap shells if it doesn't.
Who it doesn't suit: Solo indie developers and small teams. There's no organic traffic here, Kutto has never made Top Free, and there isn't a single TikTok video about it. You'd be competing on ad budget and payback math, against rivals like Zuvia that add 80k a week.
How to do it (if you still want to): The lesson worth learning is "sell one scenario, not one tool." Kutto's ads don't say "AI image generation," they say "family photos" and "birthday videos." If you go this way, do only one such scenario, deliver in the app everything the ads promise, make the first generation free, and put the cancel button in plain sight. These are exactly the things the one-star reviews are angry about.
How to acquire users: Meta video ads, tested on a small budget in cheap-traffic countries like Turkey and Mexico. Put the app in Tools and use chart rank as a cheap signal. See whether subscriptions pay back, and stop if the numbers don't work.
Is there a window to get in early: No clear window. Big companies' free image generation gets stronger every quarter, and Google Play's scrutiny of subscription billing will only tighten. The room for paid template apps is shrinking.
What would show this read is wrong: ① Kutto or a similar app reaches the top 50 on the Tools or Photography Top Free chart, which would mean this playbook still has organic reach. ② A single-scenario template photo app with a rating of 4 or higher emerges in some country and grows through word of mouth, which would mean someone has made "do one scenario well" work, and it's worth revisiting.

Why Kutto (com.sgideatg.kutto) worked
Channel: Google Play | Developer: SINGAPORE IDEAL META TECHNOLOGY PTE. LTD (Singapore UEN 202216409H, registered 2022-05-12) | First listed on the store 2026-07-15 | Research date 2026-11-06
Bottom line
Kutto didn't win on the product itself. It's a standard paid-acquisition product for going global with AI template portraits and videos: Facebook ads show "upload a photo, get a family portrait or birthday video in one tap," users are sent to Play, and after install they hit a paywall with a weekly subscription plus coin-based charges. The store page is deliberately written as a generic "AI text-to-image tool" and placed in the less competitive TOOLS category, which is why 120k installs was enough to chart #70–160 on the Turkey and Mexico (and sometimes Brazil) Tools grossing charts. Growth peaked in early October and then slowed sharply, now about 1,000 installs a day: a state where ads pay back but the scale stays small. Differentiation is nearly zero; it worked through distribution tactics, not product.
1. Data
Install curve (googleplay database; app_day_ext is AppstoreSpy's historical estimate, data from 10-29 onward is our own collection):
| Timeline | Total installs | Pattern |
|---|---|---|
| 2026-09-03 | 8,122 | AppstoreSpy starts tracking (about 7 weeks after launch) |
| 09-10 → 09-25 | 15,628 → 53,682 | about 2,500–3,500 per day |
| 10-01 → 10-08 | 63,183 → 98,862 | +35k in a week, with peaks (10-04 and 10-08, each a jump of about 11k) |
| 10-08 → 10-21 | 98,862 → 105,101 | Only about 6,000 in two weeks; ad spend essentially stopped |
| 10-21 → 10-28 | 105,101 → 112,805 | Back to about 1,100–1,400 per day |
| 10-29 → 11-06 | 112,805 → 120,477 | +7,672 over 7 days, about 1,000 per day |
- Charts (googleplay database chart_rank, 10-29 to 11-06): only on the Tools Top Grossing chart. Turkey #70–92 (peaking at #85 on 11-06), Mexico #91–107, Brazil #138–158 (on and off). Never on any Top Free or overall chart.
- Price: one in-app purchase at $6.99–$49.99 (app_snap). Reviews mention both subscriptions and coins.
- Ratings: 192 ratings, averaging 3.1; the distribution is [1-star 90, 2–4-star 0, 5-star 101] (app_snap 11-06). The middle tiers are all 0, the typical pattern of real one-star complaints mixed with incentivized five-star ratings. Ratings are about 0.16% of installs, very low, which fits paid-acquisition users.
- Versions: 1.0.1; store update date 2026-07-31, with no version updates since. The "What's new" note just says "Optimized the user experience." The templates are probably served from the server, so no release is needed.
2. What it actually is (store page vs. what it sells)
- Store page: "Kutto is an AI image generation tool… converts text input into visual outputs using predefined generation directions"; keywords are generate, art, design, poster, wallpaper; category TOOLS. The data safety section only lists "device or other IDs." (Play page, read via r.jina.ai)
- Website kuttoai.com: "Kutto turns trends into ready-to-use templates. We transform viral AI content you see on social media into templates you can instantly use… no complex prompts," aimed at newcomers who can't write prompts.
- What the ads and reviews show: the Facebook page "Kutto AI Vdieo & Photo" (id 61590564068033, with "Video" misspelled) posts video creatives titled "AI magic to generate your ideal photo instantly! ✨ Upload photos and it will be generated" (Jina search results; the video pages no longer load). Play reviews (2026-09/10):
- "I downloaded because the ad showed a family photo feature. After paying I found it doesn't exist. Cancelling the subscription keeps giving errors" (Craykray, 09-21)
- "Paid for three birthday videos, the coins ran out and none were generated" (Katerina Geleva, 10-18)
- "The generated photos don't look like me; there's no way to cancel in the app and emails get no reply" (Carol Doyle, 09-16,4 people found this helpful)
The store description is a compliance shell detached from what the app actually sells: a generic text-to-image blurb gets past review and lands in a less crowded tools category. The real hooks (photo portraits, family photos, birthday videos, all face templates) live only in the ad creatives and inside the app.
3. Competitors
There are many products doing the same thing (upload a photo, run it through an AI template for a portrait or video, subscribe weekly), mostly from going-global teams using the same playbook:
| Product | Platform | Launched | Scale (googleplay library, 11-06) | How it differs from Kutto |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Chatlulu: AI Video & Photo(Hong Kong Endless Flow) | Android | 2025-08 | 690k installs, +12k in 7 days; #41 on the Turkey Tools Top Grossing chart | Same chart, same template-portrait/video model, a year earlier and roughly 6× the size |
| VideoPose — Move Your Photo(PeaklineStudio) | Android | 2026-09 | 96k installs, +34k in 7 days; #98 on the Turkey Tools Top Grossing chart | Photo animation, a single mechanic, growing faster than Kutto |
| Zuvia AI - Video Art Maker (Xiamen Yunyuedong) | Android | 2026-10 | 118k installs, +83k in 7 days; #7 on the India Tools Top Grossing chart | Matched Kutto's total installs in one month |
| Veya AI Photo Playground(HIPPO HK TECH) | Android | 2026-09 | 78k, +29k in 7 days | Similar photo-template apps |
| Boomio - AI Movie Templates(EASTERLY TECHNOLOGY) | Android | 2026-07 | 38k, +16k in 7 days; #46 on the Italy Tools Top Grossing chart | Same template-plus-tools-category play, listed at the same time |
| Pawfex AI(SINGAPORE BAOLU TECHNOLOGY) | Android | 2025-10 | 73k; #73 on the US utility top-grossing chart | Pet video templates, also a Singapore-based entity |
| Faceplay: AI Video Photo Maker | Android | 2021-08 | 38.2M installs | Veteran face-swap/template app, two orders of magnitude bigger |
| PixVerse: AI Video Generator | Android | 2024-09 | 79.6M installs, +520k in 7 days | A platform with its own models; templates are just one feature |
| Remini / Hypic / Picsart | Android | 2019 / 2023 / 2011 | 130M–1.4B installs | Big-tech-grade AI photo editor, with AI portraits built in long ago |
| Gemini (Nano Banana), ChatGPT image generation | Big-company features | 2025 | Free | Most of the AI effects going viral on social media come from these models, and users can make them for free by writing one prompt |
Bottom line: Kutto sits in a very crowded red ocean and ranks mid-to-low on scale among its peers. The same Turkey chart already has direct rivals Chatlulu and VideoPose.
4. Growth tactics (where users come from)
- Facebook / Meta video ads (confirmed to exist, scale unknown): there is a dedicated ad account, "Kutto AI Vdieo & Photo," pushing "upload a photo, see your ideal picture instantly"; reviews explicitly say people downloaded after seeing the family-photo ad. Our Meta Ad Library doesn't track this page (searched by name, package name, and landing domain), so we can't see the number of live ads.
- The curve shape also points to paid ads: September was a steady ~2,500–3,500 installs a day, early October spiked to 35k a week, then stalled from 10-08 to 10-21, and afterward recovered to about 1,000 a day. This is the classic pattern of switching budget on and off based on payback, with no organic content during the same period.
- Organic channels are essentially zero: a TikTok search for "kutto ai" (TikHub) returned no videos related to it; X (x-radar, 90 days) returned 0 posts; no media coverage and no Reddit discussion. Don't confuse it with the similarly named long-video clipping tool "Kutto AI" (facebook.com/kuttoai), Kutt.ai, or Kuttsy.
- Store category arbitrage: listed under TOOLS rather than PHOTOGRAPHY / ART_AND_DESIGN. Most of the top 100 on the Turkey Tools grossing chart are VPNs, "who viewed my profile" apps, antivirus, and cleaners; a modest amount of subscription revenue is enough to rank #70–90, which buys extra store visibility and credibility.
- Rating management (speculative): ratings sit in only two buckets, 1 and 5 stars, with the middle completely empty. On 11-03, 1-star ratings dropped from 92 to 83 while 5-star ratings rose from 92 to 106, which looks like a batch of five-star ratings added and negative reviews removed at once. The rating count is also small relative to installs, suggesting the app doesn't actively prompt everyone to rate.
- Portfolio: the same entity runs DramaDive on iOS (2026-08 listed, ranking #36–193 on entertainment grossing charts in small countries like Bulgaria, Slovenia, and Bahrain; appstore database), and APKPure also lists HappyTok. The recall card also mentions OPENNFT. This is a company running two going-global paid-acquisition plays at once: AI templates and short dramas. The iOS version of Kutto (id 6783309033 in the recall card) 11-06 not found in the US, Turkey, Mexico, Brazil, or Japan storefronts; it may have been delisted or never publicly listed.
5. Why it took off
- The demand is already there: AI portrait / family photo / birthday video trends keep popping up on social, and mainstream users want the same results but can't write prompts. The site says outright that it turns these trends into templates (kuttoai.com).
- Ad ROI in low-ARPU markets: Meta ads are cheap in Turkey, Mexico, and Brazil. With weekly subs plus $6.99–$49.99 coin packs, only a small share of users need to pay to break even. It sits steadily on the tools Top Grossing charts in these countries (chart_rank 10-29 to 11-06 every day), which shows real, ongoing revenue.
- Conversion comes from a heavy paywall, not retention: reviews keep complaining about "no way to cancel" and "coins deducted but no image generated." Revenue leans on first purchases and auto-renewals rather than long-term active users.
- Category and description arbitrage: generic store descriptions plus the TOOLS category lower review risk and lower the bar for charting.
6. Differentiation
Almost none. It sells the same thing as Chatlulu, VideoPose, Boomio, and Veya (templated AI portraits / videos), and the model most likely runs on a third-party API. The site's "turn social-media trends into templates" pitch is a category consensus, not something unique to Kutto. What actually differs is execution: picking Turkey / Mexico, picking the TOOLS category, and leading with emotional scenarios like "family photos / birthday videos." Those choices are why it pays off, but anyone can copy them, so the barrier is low.
7. Visibility and copycats
- Visibility: few people know about it yet. No media coverage, 0 discussion on X / TikTok, and no public revenue figures (nothing on TrustMRR or similar).
- Copycats: it's hard to say who is copying Kutto, since Kutto is itself a copycat. Same-model newcomers keep launching (Zuvia 10-14 launch, 7 days +83k; VideoPose 09-15 launch), and they're growing faster than it is.
8. What to borrow
- "Vague store page + specific ad creative": a broad store page eases review and lets it pick less competitive categories; specific emotional scenes (family photos, birthdays, photos with deceased relatives, and the like) go into the ad creative to drive conversion.
- The bar for charting in the tools category is low in low-ARPU countries, where a few hundred thousand installs can get you on the chart. It's a good place to test whether a subscription model pays off.
- Templates come from the server, so the app keeps shipping new styles even on version 1.0.1. Iteration costs stay low.
- The risks are worth learning from too: hard-to-cancel subscriptions and charges without output draw a flood of 1-star ratings and refunds, can trigger Play subscription policy penalties, and this model has a limited lifespan.
9. Uncertain
- How many Meta ads it actually runs and in which countries (the ad library doesn't track this page); whether it also runs Google App Campaigns or TikTok.
- Real revenue: chart rankings only show it has steady income in the Turkey / Mexico tools category; they can't be converted into a dollar figure.
- Whether the drop from 10-08 to 10-21 was a deliberate pullback in spend, creative fatigue, or a store penalty is unclear.
- Whether an iOS version exists: id6783309033 can't be found now; the relationship between HappyTok, OPENNFT, and it hasn't been verified.
- The rating distribution shows only 1-star and 5-star reviews. There's no direct evidence of review manipulation; it's a guess.
