# Little characters walking across your screen, plus an emoji battery: how a Vietnamese app matrix stitched old ideas into 3.55M installs

**What it is** An Android app that makes anime characters walk, climb and sleep on your phone screen, while the status-bar battery icon is swapped for emoji.

**Why it took off** Behind it is a Vietnamese app matrix: a battery master package under one account with 12.7M installs, the same theme spread across 6 packages on multiple accounts, the app placed in low-competition productivity categories to climb charts, ads using borrowed IP creative, and a rating prompt propping up a 4.6 score.

**C** **How you could play it** Don't build the 39th generic two-in-one. If you do it, build what the factory packages won't: turning your own character/OC into a desktop pet, acquiring users through TikTok content of fans showing off their characters, with light ads and a small one-time purchase.

C grade: you can learn tactics like switching to low-competition categories to climb charts and testing a theme on a small account before reposting on the main one. But it relies on a matrix of accounts with a master package at tens of millions of installs and a paid acquisition budget, which followers can't match. The category already has 38+ similar apps, the two-in-one has no barrier, it's Android-only, and it carries permission-policy risk. Few people know about this yet

Android has two small needs that have already been validated: one is making anime characters walk, climb and sleep on the phone screen (Shimeji desktop pets, which someone reached 3,000 tens of millions of installs with 2016 years ago), the other is replacing the status-bar battery with emoji icons. In July 17, a Vietnamese developer account called ZAppsolution combined both into one package, and in under four months it got 3.55M installs. Anyone can assemble this combination; what made it run is the machine behind it. Below: what it is, where the traffic comes from, where the money comes from, and whether you should follow.

### A 38-person-upvoted one-star review

Sep 6, US-store user Brittany P gave Emoji Battery & Shimeji Pets one star:

> "If I could give it less than one star I would. The ads make you think you can customize it and swap in your own Pokémon, but it's not like that at all. You can only use the ones they give you."

This review ranks first on the store page, with 38 people finding it helpful. The second is a three-star review from Aug 19:

> "The app is fine, but there are more ads than normal. Also, oddly, it won't let me uninstall until I fill out a (short) survey explaining why."

The two reviews nearly sum up the app: the creative uses Pokémon-style IP to pull people in, the app earns through ads, and it even blocks uninstalling.

### What it actually is

The store page is blunt: a group of anime-style characters on your screen, "while you browse the web, chat, watch videos or play games, they walk, climb, jump, sit and doze on your screen"; you can drag them, tap them, adjust size and speed, and there's a Swarm mode that fills the screen with them. The other half is the emoji battery icon, pitched as "battery icons that match your desktop pets."

To run, it needs the "display over other apps" permission, and the battery icon part also needs accessibility permission. That's why this category is Android-only: iOS doesn't let apps float over other apps, so App Store alternatives make do with Dynamic Island and widgets.

Ad-supported, with in-app purchases from $3.99–$19.99 (Google Play store page, 11-06).

### How fast it grew

| Metric | Metric | Sources |
|---|---|---|
| Total installs | 3.56M | Google Play,11-06 |
| New in the last 7 days | 266k, over 30,000 a day | Google Play, 10-29 to 11-06 |
| Rating | 4.6 stars, 36,367 ratings, but only 127 written reviews | Google Play,11-06 |
| Charts | 10-29 charted on 28 charts: Mexico productivity Top Free #15, US #18, US overall chart #197 | Google Play charts |
| In-app purchases | Estimated 10-07 to 11-06 a month, under $5,000 | AppGazers |

104 days since launch to 3.29M installs, averaging 32k a day. The curve is flat, not a one-off spike from a single video. But the last week has softened: the US productivity Top Free chart dropped from #18 to #88, Mexico from #15 to #43; daily new ratings fell from 10-30 to 288 in 11-06 and to 129; from 11-03 to 11-06, the last three days added only about 20k installs, versus 11–130k every three days before. Whether ad budget moved to other packages or this wave is ending needs a few more days to tell (inference).

### Where the traffic comes from

**First, it sits in the wrong category, on purpose.** Apps like this almost all sit in Personalization, crowded with dozens of similar apps. This one is in Productivity. The bar in Productivity is much lower, so it reached the top 200 of Top Free productivity charts in 20+ countries, at one point #20 in the US and Mexico, and even Top Grossing productivity in the Philippines and Mexico (where a few thousand dollars a month in IAP is enough). Chart position in turn brings store exposure.

**Second, it's a whole matrix.** The same developer account runs a pure emoji battery mother app with 12.7M installs (launched in March, still adding +400K over the last 7 days). Checking the developer site and email, we matched a chain of sibling apps sharing the same ad-monetization stack (lutech.vn). Battery + desktop pet alone accounts for 6 of them:

| Package | Account | Launched | Installs | past 7 days |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Emoji Battery Icon Customize (master package, battery only) | ZAppsolution | 03-25 | 12.7M | +404k |
| Emoji Battery & Shimeji Pet | Tools for Everyday | 06-17 | 3.39M | +105k |
| Emoji Battery Widget & Icons | Tools for Everyday | 06-23 | 2.89M | +82k |
| **Emoji Battery & Shimeji Pets (this app)** | ZAppsolution | 07-17 | 3.56M | +266k |
| Emoji Battery: Icons & Pets | SHINK COMPANY | 08-22 | 2.04M | +99k |
| Another battery widget package | Lutech Studio | 09-11 | 340k | +27k |

(Google Play,11-06)

The sequence is clear: in June they tested "battery + pet" on a small account, then a month later reposted on a main account with a tens-of-millions master package, and in August copied it to a third account. The same feature added 105k a week on the small account and 266k a week on the main one. Account and budget set the pace, not the product. The six packages combined reach about 24.9M installs and still add 980k a week.

**Third, paid acquisition.** That Pokémon one-star review is evidence: someone installed after seeing an ad, and what the ad showed wasn't what the app delivered. Other packages from the same matrix have dozens of live ads in the Meta Ad Library. Which platforms this package ran on and how much was spent can't be found from outside.

**Fourth, ratings.** Of 36,367 ratings, only 127 come with text (0.35%). Daily new ratings equal roughly 0.5–0.8% of new installs, and 83% are five-star. A ratio this high of "rating without words" usually means a rating prompt is shown inside the app (inference, not verified on a device). Still, it has about 2,700 one-stars, 7% of the total.

On TikTok the category's organic interest is real, but this package isn't what's driving it. Searching "shimeji pets battery" the top hit is a 2026-07-06 emoji-battery promo video (480k views) from another brand; most high-view content is fans showing off Genshin, Deltarune and Pokémon characters on their screens. No creator accounts or influencer deals for this package were found.

### Where the money comes from

Almost all ad revenue. In-app purchases under $5,000 a month are a rounding error. The characters stay on screen, so users open the app now and then to swap characters or icons, each time an opportunity for interstitial and rewarded ads, which gives it a bit more reason to return than a battery-only package. No public ad revenue figures exist, but the same matrix keeps releasing new packages on the same theme one after another, which suggests the math mostly works (inference).

### Who it's competing with

Saturated. Google Play has at least 38 apps with shimeji, emoji battery or screen pet in the name or description. Most were launched 2026 years ago, Vietnamese studios make up the majority, and new accounts keep arriving every month from 8 to October:

| App | Developer | Launched | Installs | Difference |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Shimeji: Play with Screen Pets | Digital Cosmos | 2016-12 | 33.6M | The category originator, desktop pets only, +29k a week, growth has already slowed |
| Emoji Battery Icon Customize | New Widget Co. | 2026-04 | 15.6M | Battery only, +376k a week, runs its own TikTok account |
| Live Anime Shimeji Pets | Hydra Global | 2025-12 | 4.81M | Desktop pets only |
| Pets On Screen - Desktop Pet | MANDALA | 2026-10-12 | 1.71M | Desktop pets only, launched less than a month ago |
| Floatoon: Create Shimeji Pets | Tesseract Play | — | Not verified | Lets users upload their own drawn characters as desktop pets, with a TikTok tutorial at 100k views |

"Battery + pet" two-in-one, reposted three times by the same matrix; outside, TBS Solution (10-14), NEKS-CAPITAL (09-10) and DreamTeam (07-22) are following too. This combination has no barrier to entry.

### Where it falls short

There's one gap, and users have said it themselves: **they want their own favorite characters.** The Pokémon one-star complains about "only the ones they give you"; most popular shimeji videos on TikTok are fans showing off Genshin, Deltarune, and their own original characters (OCs). To avoid infringement, the factory packages can only ship generic kittens, puppies and "anime-style" figures, while the creative hints at Pokémon. The gap between the two is the source of the bad review.

But this space isn't empty: Floatoon is already doing "upload your drawing and it becomes a desktop pet", and has its own TikTok account. Also, touching IP characters brings infringement complaints and takedown risk, which is why factories avoid it.

### If it were you

**C: you can learn from it, but following it isn't worth it.** It's the output of a distribution machine: master packages with tens of millions of accounts, switching to low-competition categories to climb charts, spreading packages across accounts, paid acquisition. None of that lives in the product, so you can't copy it.

**Who it suits** : studios that already have a paid acquisition team, ad-monetization tuning skills, and a template-app pipeline. For you, the two most valuable moves in this package are **moving into a low-barrier category to win chart spots** , and **testing the theme on a small account first, then reposting on the main account once it works** .

**Who it doesn't suit** : indie developers and small teams. Without acquisition capacity you'd be the 39th package; search "shimeji" or "emoji battery" in the store and ahead of you are several tens-of-millions giants plus this matrix's six packages. iOS developers should skip it too, since the platform doesn't allow it.

**If you must do it** : don't build the 39th generic two-in-one. Go toward "the user's own characters": upload an image or your own OC and it automatically animates to walk and climb, with a matching set of battery icons. The pitch is "your character lives on your screen", which the factory packages won't touch and users explicitly want. Keep ads light, add a one-time purchase or small IAP to unlock actions and characters, and target the "cute but too many ads" reviewers. Note Floatoon is already on this path, so look at how it's doing first.

**How to acquire users** : TikTok content of fans showing off characters already has traction. Make videos along the lines of "I put my OC / the character I drew into my phone", one character per video, and put shimeji, screen pet, OC and create your own in the store title and description. Don't buy ads yet: the factories have pushed acquisition prices up, and your ad monetization won't pay them back.

**When is the deadline** : there's no hard deadline. Christmas and New Year holiday characters are the nearest creative hook; launching before early December could catch them.

**What would show you misread it** : (1) the matrix's weekly adds across its 6 packages (now about 980k) fall below half within a month or two. Demand is fading, so skip the whole category. (2) Google Play tightens overlay and accessibility permissions and starts taking down these packages in bulk. The window is closed, whatever you do. (3) The reverse: a "make your own character" package like Floatoon's hits millions of installs with little paid push, showing the custom-character route really works for someone, and that's where a small team should go.

Where users come from

- **Verified** **Paid acquisition (video ads, riding IP creative)** : The most useful US-store negative review (38 people found it helpful) says the ad made them think they could swap in Pokémon. Sister apps from the same portfolio run dozens of ads in the Meta Ad Library.

- **Verified** **switched to the Productivity category to chart** : peers all sit in Personalization, this one is in Productivity, 10-29 charted on 28 charts, #18 in the US store and #15 in Mexico, #197 on the US overall chart

- **Verified** **Portfolio spread and mother-app cross-promotion** : 6 apps and 4 accounts on the same theme, 24.9M installs combined; the mother app under the same developer account has 12.7M users; the store page has a More by slot

- Inferred **In-app rating prompts** : Of 36,367 ratings, only 127 have written reviews; ratings make up about 0.5–0.8% of new installs; 4.6 stars

- Inferred **Store search keywords** : Title and package name both include Emoji Battery and Shimeji Pets

- Inferred **TikTok content** : The "Battery Shimeji Pets" hashtag has 1.6M posts, but the high-view videos are from competitors; no account for this app found

## Why Emoji Battery & Shimeji Pets (com.shimeji.petonscreen.battery.emoji) is breaking out

> Channel: Google Play | Developer account: ZAppsolution (store page "About the developer": NGÔ VĂN TRUNG, Quảng Nam, Vietnam) | Launched: 2026-07-17 | Research date: 2026-11-06

### Bottom line

It isn't an isolated hit. It's a **Vietnamese Lutech / TOMODEV app factory** taking a proven "Emoji battery icon" niche, bundling the sister Emoji Battery app (12.6M installs) with the decade-old Shimeji desktop-pet category, and **republishing it under a new package name** . It works mainly because of three things: the portfolio's paid acquisition and app-spreading ability, moving the app into the less competitive **Productivity** category to chart, and high ratings driven by in-app rating prompts. The "battery + pet in one" product is only a packaging difference.

### 1. Data

| Metric | Value | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Cumulative global installs | 3,555,295 (store tier 1M+) | googleplay library app_snap 2026-11-06 |
| New in the last 7 days | +266,469 (about 38k/day) | Google Play library app_profile |
| Average pace | From 07-17 to 10-29, 104 days, 3.29M installed, about 32k/day. Steady pace all along, not a sudden spike. | googleplay library app_day |
| Rating | 4.6 stars, 36,367 ratings, only 127 written reviews | app_snap |
| Rating growth | Up 130–290 per day, about 0.5%–0.8% of new installs | app_day |
| Monetization | Has ads; in-app purchases $3.99–$19.99 | app_snap |
| Charted | 10-29 is charting on 28 charts: Mexico Productivity free #15, US #18, Italy #20; US **overall apps chart** #197, Mexico overall #125. 11-06 US Productivity fell to #88, Mexico #43, down to 22 charts. | googleplay library chart_rank |
| Top Grossing | Philippines Productivity Top Grossing #46–51, Mexico #67–76 (the bar is low on these category grossing charts) | chart_rank |
| In-app purchase revenue estimate | AppGazers estimates 10-07 to 11-06 in-app revenue < $5K, with 505k–2M downloads over the same period | [AppGazers](https://appgazers.com/reports/apps/android-com.shimeji.petonscreen.battery.emoji) |

Verdict: **The money mainly comes from ads, not in-app purchases** . In-app revenue is under $5K/month; it charted in Top Grossing only because the Philippines and Mexico Productivity grossing charts have a low bar. Category rank slid steadily over 10 days (US 18→88), but daily installs held at 3–40k, which looks more like **ad budget moved elsewhere, or new competitors entering the chart** than users leaving.

### 2. Competitors

#### 2.1 Category origin and heavyweights

| Product | Developer | Launched | Scale (googleplay library, 11-06) | How it differs |
|---|---|---|---|---|

| Emoji Battery: DIY Status Bar | ImoDevel | 2026-08 | 830k, +110k/7 days | Battery icon only |

More than 38 Play apps with shimeji / emoji battery / screen pet in their name or description; most have been around 2026 years, and Vietnamese studios make up the majority.

#### 2.2 Sibling apps in the same portfolio (key finding)

The developer websites of these apps all point to `lutech.vn/app-ads.txt`, with contact emails appsolution87@gmail.com or support@tomodev.vn, belonging to the same ad-monetization system (googleplay library, app table):

| Package | Developer account | Launched | Installs | 7 new in the last day |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| com.tstudio.emojibatteryicon(Emoji Battery Icon Customize) | ZAppsolution | 2026-03-25 | 12.7M | +404k |
| **com.shimeji.petonscreen.battery.emoji (this app)** | ZAppsolution | 2026-07-17 | 3.56M | +266k |
| com.anime.shimeji.petonscreen(Emoji Battery & Shimeji **Pet** ) | Tools for Everyday - AI Tasks | 2026-06-17 (one month before this app) | 3.39M | +105k |
| com.battery.emoji.charging(Emoji Battery Widget & Icons) | Tools for Everyday - AI Tasks | 2026-06-23 | 2.89M | +82k |
| com.emojibattery.custom.statusbar.petonscreen(Emoji Battery: Icons & Pets) | SHINK COMPANY | 2026-08-22 | 2.04M | +99k |
| com.widgetcustomize.emojibattery | Lutech Studio | 2026-09-11 | 340k | +27k |

This portfolio has 6 apps on the "battery icon + desktop pet" theme alone, about **24.9M installs combined, 7k added in the last 980 days** . This app is the second "battery + pet" app in the batch: first tested under the "Tools for Everyday" account in June, then republished a month later under the ZAppsolution account (which holds the 12.7M-install Emoji Battery mother app), and a third went out under SHINK COMPANY in August. This is classic **multi-account, same theme, different package name** spreading: it diversifies takedown risk while taking up more store search slots and chart positions.

#### 2.3 Other formats

- iOS: the system doesn't allow apps to float over other apps, so true Shimeji isn't possible. The App Store only has substitutes that use Dynamic Island and widgets, like Sihoooo's "Shimeji 灵动宠物岛" (3,454 ratings), and Hypernova's Emoji Battery Charging (5,698 ratings, 2026-09) (appstore library). **This category can only be built on Android** , a platform permission limit.

- Desktop and web: Shimeji-ee desktop version, Chrome extension shimejis.xyz; the open-source Android version Shijima is recommended by users on Reddit r/shimeji ([Reddit](https://www.reddit.com/r/shimeji/comments/1m3sv1q/a_new_android_shimeji_app_shijima_is_now_out_on/)).

- Big companies: phone systems don't offer emoji battery icons or desktop-pet features themselves.

### 3. Where users come from

| Channel | Evidence | Confirmed? |
|---|---|---|
| Paid acquisition (video ads) | The most useful US-store negative review (38 people found it helpful, 2026-09-06): "the ad makes it look like you can customize or swap in Pokémon, but you can only use the existing ones". This shows the ads use IP-riding creative that doesn't match the actual product. Sister apps com.tomo.ai.plant and com.asianmobile.* run dozens of ads in the Meta Ad Library (metaads library app_link, from 2026-11-01). This app's package name isn't on our Meta / TikTok / Google ad tracking list; not found ≠ not advertising. | Paid acquisition confirmed (via reviews); specific platforms not verified |
| Category switch for charting | Most rivals sit under PERSONALIZATION, but this one is filed under **PRODUCTIVITY** , so it charted in the top 200 of the Productivity Top Free chart across 20 countries, hit the top 20 in the US and Mexico at one point, and made the Productivity Top Grossing chart in the Philippines and Mexico. Those chart spots also bring in store visibility | Confirmed (chart_rank) |
| Portfolio cross-promotion | The store page has a "More by ZAppsolution" slot; the mother app Emoji Battery Icon Customize has 12.7M users, and the two apps' selling points overlap heavily (battery icons). Whether the apps cross-promote internally was not verified. | Partly confirmed |
| In-app rating prompts | Of 36,367 ratings, only 127 have written reviews (0.35%); daily new ratings make up about 0.5–0.8% of new installs; 5-star ratings account for over 83%, and don't match the content of the 2-star negative reviews → classic in-app rating prompting. | Inferred, fairly strong |
| Store search | The title puts two high-search-volume terms, "Emoji Battery" and "Shimeji Pets", together, and the package name carries keywords too. | Inferred |
| TikTok / creators | The TikTok "Battery Shimeji Pets" hashtag page shows 1.6M posts ([TikTok discover](https://www.tiktok.com/discover/battery-shimeji-pets)). But the high-view videos found are from competitors' own accounts (@batteryicon promoting New Widget Co.; @gpsarea68, another tools app's account, whose Emoji Battery video has 8.69M views). No account for this app or creator partnerships found. Hindi-language YouTube has "how to use" tutorial videos. | This app's own TikTok account not found; the category has organic heat on TikTok, confirmed. |
| media, X, Reddit | The X corpus shows 30 posts for "shimeji" in the last 0 days; no media coverage; download sites (Softonic, Uptodown, APKPure, AppBrain) index auto-generated pages. | Confirmed none |

### 4. Why it can break out

1. **The niche is proven, and the sister mother app is right next to it** : the Emoji Battery Icon Customize app under the same developer account, listed in March, already has 12.7M installs. The battery-icon demand, how to buy ads for it, and how to monetize it are all figured out. Adding Shimeji (Digital Cosmos reached 33.6M installs in 2016 years) brings in a second proven demand.

2. **Matrix seeding** : the same theme published across 6 packages from 4 accounts. Test with a small account first (06-17 Tools for Everyday), and once it works, republish with the main account (07-17 this product), then keep copying (08-22 SHINK).

3. **Put it in the Productivity category** : skip the dozens of rivals in Personalization, pick up chart spots in 20 countries in a low-barrier category, reach the top 20 in the US and Mexico at one point, and hit #197 on the US overall chart.

4. **Paid acquisition creatives use IP and exaggerated claims to drive clicks** : the negative review about the "Pokémon ads" shows the creatives riff on anime and game IPs. Users get something to watch once installed (characters walking across the screen), so retention and ratings hold up reasonably well.

5. **Rating prompt pushes the score to 4.6** : lots of ratings, very few written reviews, and high scores help store conversion.

6. **The money comes from ads** : the app carries ads and uses Lutech's app-ads.txt. The desktop pet floats on screen constantly and the battery icon stays visible, so users keep reopening the app to switch characters and icons, which creates many chances for interstitial and rewarded video ads. In-app purchases are under $5K/month, a small slice.

### 5. Differentiation

- **Product level** : it bundles an "Emoji battery icon" with a "Shimeji desktop pet," and can "theme the battery icon to match the pet," plus a Swarm mode (a screen full of pets). Most competitors only do one of these. But com.anime.shimeji.petonscreen from the same matrix had this exact combination a month earlier, and SHINK, TBS Solution (Emoji Battery Icon & Pets, 10-14) and NEKS-CAPITAL are following too, so **this combination has no moat** .

- **Distribution level** is the real difference: placing it in the Productivity category, backing it with an account that has a tens-of-millions-install parent package, and repeatedly seeding packages within the matrix.

- Bottom line: **the bundle is packaging, not the main reason it worked** . The main drivers are matrix distribution and switching categories to climb charts. The same combination in the small-account version (3.39M, +105k/7 days) did worse than this product (3.56M, +266k/7 days), which shows account weight and ad budget matter far more than product differences.

### 6. How many people know about it

- No public revenue, no press coverage, and no one discussing it on X → the product itself is **still little known** .

- But the category is **already crowded** : at least 38 similar packages on Google Play, and every month since 2026 year 8 through October new Vietnamese studios have entered (TRUNGHIEUCOM, ImoDevel, 368 Phuc Minh, Growly, Maxlabs and others). Copycats are clearly piling in.

### 7. What others can borrow

- Once a parent package proves a theme, pair it with another validated older category (Shimeji) into a "two-in-one" and republish under a new package name, capturing search terms from both sides.

- **Switch categories** : look beyond the crowded categories for a low-barrier one (here, Productivity), and trade less volume for more chart positions and store exposure.

- Test themes with small accounts first, and once one works, republish with a high-weight main account. Seed the same theme across multiple accounts to spread the takedown risk.

- This is a floating-window category that only exists on Android, so there's no head-on competition on iOS.

- Risks: IP-riding creatives attract negative reviews and infringement complaints. It also needs overlay and accessibility permissions, and a policy tightening on Google Play could get packages pulled in bulk.

### 8. Still unclear

- Which platforms it buys on and how much (this product isn't on our ad-library tracking list), and how much ad revenue it makes.

- Whether the ranking decline is ad budget shifting to newer SHINK packages, or something else.

- Whether the app cross-promotes its parent package internally.

- Whether the rating prompt uses the "ask about satisfaction first, then guide to rate" approach (not verified by installing the app).

- To see the full curve since launch, we'll need the historical data AppstoreSpy is backfilling (the app_day_ext table doesn't have it yet).
