A lock-screen wallpaper that smiles at you: the 20th copycat at day 45 already hit 220k installs, but this lane is already crowded
What it is A wallpaper app that puts a moving, silly or creepy smiling face on your phone's lock screen. Free to download, earns from ads and in-app purchases.
Why it took off In mid-2025 TikTok promo videos pushed this category into a fixed search term. The app catches the search with the category word as its name, then keeps the rating around 4.7 through repeated paid acquisition and review prompts.
CHow you could follow Don't build another smiley wallpaper. Copy the playbook instead: watch for the app promo meme that's just taken off on TikTok, and when there are fewer than five copies, ship within two or three weeks, make your own vertical videos, then scale with cheap app-install ads in lower-cost countries.

On Sep 22, 2026, a Google Play app called "Silly Smile Live Wallpaper" showed up, an animated "goofy smiley face" lock screen. 45 days later it had 220k installs and charted in the personalized Top Free lists of 20 countries. It added nothing new: same name, same features, same selling points as the hits from a year earlier. This piece covers why people keep installing this kind of thing, how a late clone still gets traction, and whether you should follow."
A single 'your wallpaper just got a little weird'
In Jun 2025 4, a TikTok account called reviewapp.lutech posted a video with just one line: 'Your wallpaper just got a little weird! Try Silly Smile Live Wallpaper now!' It has 24.4M views to date. In Jul 3 the same caption ran again and got 28.7M views; in Jun 6 they switched wording to 'Warning: This wallpaper smiles back!' (checked on TikTok, 11-06). The poster is Lutech Studio, whose 'Funny Smile Live Wallpaper' has 15.2M cumulative installs on Google Play and is still adding 147k over the last 7 days.
The product is simple: when you unlock your phone, a grin stretching to the ears animates on screen, some cute, some scary. Over a year on, 'silly smile wallpaper' has become a fixed search term in the stores, and searching it on TikTok turns up almost nothing but app promo videos.
Who the late entrant is
The developer is SONYA INTERNATIONAL IMAGE (HONG KONG) CO LIMITED, registered in Kwai Chung, Hong Kong. The support email is a Gmail address under a Vietnamese name, and the website is a free Vercel template site. The same developer account has 12 apps, all launched between 2026 9 and October: a phone speaker water-clearing app, a PDF reader, a GPS watermark camera, an AI calorie counter, a dog translator, an AI girlfriend, and another 3D live wallpaper. The speaker cleaner (Speaker Cleaner) is growing faster than the smile wallpaper, at 805k installs, with +196k in the last 7 days (Google Play, 11-06).
This is an app factory: when a category shows volume, it clones a template and ships; whatever pays back gets more spend. The smile wallpaper is just one entry in this batch.
The store page follows the same route: the title is the category term, and the description repeats smile wallpaper, funny wallpaper, spooky wallpaper, emoji wallpaper, 4K and live wallpaper one after another. The only different line is 'Built-In AI Wallpaper Maker', describing an idea that generates a 4K wallpaper with AI. Whether this feature drives any traffic can't be seen from outside.
How it grew
Install curve (third-party estimates, 9-22 to 10-28; each point from 10-29 is a daily store count):
| Date | What happened |
|---|---|
| 9-22 | Launched |
| 9-28 | Only 1,107 cumulative |
| 10-04 | +26.6k in one day |
| 10-07 | +25k in one day |
| 10-21 | +23.5k in one day |
| 10-31 to 11-06 | Each update adds +4 thousand to 12k, reaching 221,761 cumulative |
Most days in between are only a few hundred to a few thousand. The steps up look more like rounds of ad buying than slow organic growth (inference). The countries it charts in also keep shifting: early on it was France, Italy and Spain; in Nov 6 its India personalized free chart jumped from #61 to #21 in a single day, and the number of charting countries went from 8 to 20 the same day, with new additions Argentina, Brazil, Vietnam, Thailand, Mexico and Malaysia, where installs are cheap (Google Play charts, 11-05 to 11-06). We found no ad creatives, and don't know which channels were used or how much was spent.
The ratings are odd too. Of the 2,511 ratings, there are no 5-star, 4-star, 1-star or 3-star ratings at all (11-06 2,159 251 100,2). A normal app doesn't look like this; it usually means the app first asks 'Do you like it?' and only sends those who tap yes to rate in the store. Daily new ratings rose from 10-31 of 36 to 11-06 of 238, faster than installs. The pinned top review on the store page reads 'super easy setup and free finally', posted in Oct 6, and 50 people found it helpful. A 4.7 rating matters for search ranking and for how many visitors download after landing.
So it gains traction through three things: others raise the demand on TikTok, it catches store search with the category term, and it pays for installs and keeps the rating around 4.7. The product itself has nothing different.
Where the money comes from
The store page lists "Contains ads" and "In-app purchases," with IAPs at $8.49 to $19.99. It has never charted in any country's Top Grossing, so IAP sales are small. The money is mostly inferred to come from ad revenue.
How this kind of app makes money is clear from the top apps' one-star reviews. Turkey is one of the biggest markets for Silly Smile Wallpaper & Sound (Daily Tool Labs, 9.14M installs). The most-upvoted reviews there read like this:
"They made a good app for watching ads, with a few random animated wallpapers in between." (1 stars, 2025-10-11,39 people found it helpful)
"I gave it 5 stars only so this review would show up near the top. There are so many ads you can barely do anything. Don't download it." (5 stars, 2025-08-01)
"No exaggeration, an ad every 7 seconds. The only good reviews are from their own people." (1 stars, 2025-10-08)
"Installed it after seeing it on Instagram, looked good. Turns out everything costs money, and the animated wallpaper app in the ad isn't in the app at all." (1 stars, 2025-11-13)
That last review also shows the top apps run ads on Meta. Users want a moving smiley face and get a stream of interstitial ads and a paywall. That's the category's problem, and also how it makes money.
Who it's competing with
On Google Play, we counted 20 personalization apps with silly or smile in the title, totaling about 78.6M installs. Together they still add about 7M over the last 1.83 days; 7 of them launched after July 2026. This app's 7-day gain is 20% of that 1.8-app total.
| App | Developer | Total installs | past 7 days | What's different |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Funny Smile Live Wallpaper | Lutech Studio | 15.2M | +147k | The one that first pushed this category on TikTok |
| Silly Fun Smile Live Wallpaper | Fusion Flow Tech | 14M | +169k | Charted in 28 countries |
| Smiley Fun Live Wallpaper | Hypernova Limited | 11.4M | +326k | Same-named product on iOS, 12k ratings |
| Silly Smile Wallpaper & Sound | Daily Tool Labs | 9.14M | +536k | Added sound, now growing fastest, #3 on the Saudi Top Free chart |
| Silly Smile Gun Live Wallpaper | arrowshapes | 2.29M | +25k | Smiley face with a gun |
| Silly Wall - Live Wallpaper 4K | Romulus-Base | 130k | +51k | Launched in Oct 21, later than this one |
(Google Play, 11-06.) Same on iPhone: searching "silly smile wallpaper" in the US App Store, the first page has 15 clones, mostly from individual developers. The biggest, Hypernova, has 12,154 ratings (11-06).
The apps that stood out a bit in the category added sound or a gun, and both have real volume.
If it were you
Grade: C. There's a playbook to learn here, but don't chase this category. Demand is still there (still 180 million+ new installs a week), but it's already the 20th wave, the leaders are at ten-million scale, and they're all spending heavily on ads. It hits 220k the way it does because of paid acquisition and a factory that can test a dozen apps in parallel, not because the product itself is worth copying.
Who it fits: small factories that already have a template, know how to run Google App Campaigns or Meta app ads, and can work out whether ad revenue covers the cost per install. For you, this is a question of adding one more SKU, not whether to enter the category.
Who it doesn't fit: a solo indie dev hoping to grow through TikTok organic reach or store search. Anyone searching "silly smile" first sees 20 same-named apps, with top ratings in the tens of thousands, and you won't rank. Without paid acquisition, you'll most likely end up as one of the dozen-odd iOS clones with single-digit ratings.
If you do it, how: don't make another smiley face. Copy the step before it. Watch TikTok accounts that promote apps for viral hits (like Lutech's "Your wallpaper just got a little weird," which hit tens of millions of views within a month). Launch within two to three weeks, while the search term is new and there are fewer than five clones in the store, and use that phrase in the name. The first viral video for the smiley face wave came in June 2025, the store flood came in the first half of 2026, so the window is roughly six months to a year. The category's most common complaints are "all ads" and "the wallpaper in the ad isn't in the app." Fewer ads, and wallpapers that match the promo video, is a difference you can build, but that alone won't get you volume.
How to get users: copy Lutech. Open your own TikTok account and post vertical videos like "unlock your phone and the screen smiles at you," several posts a day with the same caption. Once volume picks up, test small in Europe with app ads, then scale into cheaper markets like India, Latin America, and Southeast Asia.
When would be early enough: the smiley face category is already late. For the next similar meme, launch within a month of seeing the first promo video hit ten million views.
What would show you're wrong: (1) if this app passes 1M cumulative installs before the end of November, or charts in any country's Top Grossing, that means late entrants can still make money and the category isn't saturated; (2) conversely, if the category's 20 apps drop below 1M new installs a week combined and the top apps stop paying for ads, this wave is over.

Why Silly Smile Live Wallpaper (com.sillysmile.live.wallpaper.funny) is getting traction
Channel: Google Play / Personalization. Developer: SONYA INTERNATIONAL IMAGE (HONG KONG) CO LIMITED. Store launch 2026-09-22. Research date 2026-11-06. Data sources: our googleplay library (app_profile / app_day / app_day_ext / chart_rank, collected daily since 2026-10-29), metaads / googleads libraries, the Play store page (read via Jina), TikHub TikTok search, Jina web search.
Bottom line
This isn't a new category. It's a late clone in a proven viral category ("silly smile" funny/creepy smiley animated wallpapers). It's made by an "app factory" registered behind a Hong Kong shell company, with contacts that look Vietnamese (12 apps under one account, spanning cleaners, PDF tools, AI calorie counters, dog translators, and AI girlfriends). It reached 45k installs in 220 days through paid acquisition (installs rising in steps) + in-app prompts for reviews (an unusual rating distribution) + copying the category leaders' ASO keywords, not through any product difference. Compared with the category leaders, its volume is still small (the top single apps have 9M–15M installs).
1. Data: how big it is and how it grew
- Cumulative installs 221,761 (googleplay.app_profile, 2026-11-06); +7 in the last 32,711 days. 2,511 ratings, averaging 4.74 stars.
- Install curve since launch (app_day_ext, AppstoreSpy estimate): 9-22 launched, 9-28 only 1,107; 10-03→10-04 one day +26.6k, 10-07 another day +25k, 10-21 one day +23.5k, with most days in between only a few hundred to a few thousand. This step-like pattern looks more like paid waves (say, a Google App Campaigns push) or chart-chasing than organic word of mouth, which usually grows smoothly.
- Last week: 4k–6.5k new installs per day. On 11-06, the India personalization Top Free chart jumped from #61 the day before to #21, and it charted in 20 countries that day (8 the day before; chart_rank). Charting has moved from Europe (France, Italy, Spain) to India, Latin America, and Southeast Asia, which looks like a push into cheaper markets.
- Ratings are growing faster than installs: new ratings per day went from 36 to 238 (10-31 to 11-06) while installs were 4k–6.5k a day, so roughly every 100 installs bring about 3.6 ratings (11-06). That ratio is high.
- The rating distribution is off: 1 star 100 / 2 stars 0 / 3 stars 0 / 4 stars 251 / 5 stars 2,159 (app_snap.histogram). There are no 2- or 3-star reviews at all, the classic result of "ask users if they like it, and only send the happy ones to the store rating prompt." The pinned reviews on the store page are "super easy setup and free finally" (50 people found it helpful) and "best live wallpaper app by far..." (30 people), both short and generic praise.
- How it makes money: "Contains ads + in-app purchases," with IAPs at $8.49–$19.99 (Play page / app_snap). The description also mentions an "AI wallpaper creator," which is likely a feature behind the paywall (unverified). Chart history: it has never charted in any country (best_grossing_rank is empty).
2. Competitors: this category is already crowded
In our library, there are 20 apps with silly/smile in the title and personalization as the category. Together they have about 78.6M cumulative installs, and about 7M new installs over the last 1.83 days. 7 of them launched after 2026-07 (googleplay library). This app's gain over the last 7 days is about 1.8% of their combined total.

Verdict: by name and features, this app is nearly identical to the ones above. 4K smiley / creepy smile animated lock screen, one-tap setup, auto wallpaper rotation, and the category keyword as its name: "Silly Smile Live Wallpaper". The only extra is "AI wallpaper creator", mentioned briefly in the description. I found no sign that it drives any volume.
3. Growth tactics
- Paid acquisition (likely, though I haven't seen the creatives directly): installs rise in steps (10-04 +26.6k, 10-07 +25k, 10-21 +23.5k) with flat days in between. Recent chart entries moved from Europe to India, Latin America and Southeast Asia, and India jumped from #61 to #21 in one day. Our metaads and googleads libraries have no record of this app or this developer. Those libraries only track products on our list, so no hit doesn't mean no spend. Google App Campaigns is the most common channel for this kind of factory, but I have no evidence for it.
- Store search / ASO: the category keyword "Silly Smile Live Wallpaper" is used directly as the name, and the description is packed with keywords like live wallpaper / 4K / smile wallpaper / spooky wallpaper / emoji wallpaper. The package name
sillysmile.live.wallpaper.funnyuses the same terms. In effect it captures the search demand that top products generated on TikTok. - Guided reviews: 2 and 3 star ratings come to 0. Ratings grow faster than installs, the pinned reviews are short and generic, and their helpful counts are high. This keeps the rating around 4.7, which improves search and listing conversion.
- The category demand was sparked by others on TikTok: Lutech's TikTok promotion in 2025 (reviewapp.lutech single video 28.7M views; sillysmile.lutech single videos 1.55M / 1.87M), plus silly smile content from wallpaper accounts like civically_gram (5M views), turned "silly smile wallpaper" into a search term. We found no TikTok account or creator partnership for this app of its own.
- Factory portfolio: the same developer account also publishes Speaker Cleaner (805k installs, +196k in the last 7 days), 3D Live Wallpapers (55k), GPS Map Camera, PDF Reader, Phone Cleaner, Emoji Battery, AI Calories, AR Sketch, Dog Translator, Julia AI girlfriend and others (12 apps on the Play developer page). They all went live from 2026-09 to October. The developer websites share one Vercel template, zen-amo-website.vercel.app, the support email is [email protected], and the address is in Kwai Chung, Hong Kong. The typical playbook is "batch-clone trending categories, test with paid acquisition, keep whatever pays back."
- Where the money comes from: interstitial / rewarded ads (Play lists it as containing ads) plus $8.49–$19.99 in-app purchases (ad removal / premium / AI generation). Installs are cheap in India, Latin America and Southeast Asia, so as long as ad revenue covers acquisition cost, the spend can keep running.
4. Visibility
- No media coverage, and nobody is discussing it on X. Searching the package name turns up nothing on the web. Only directory sites like AppBrain and APKPure index the developer. Few people know about this specific app.
- But the category is well known. At least a dozen apps already compete in it, and the top ones have tens of millions of installs. "Nobody knows it" doesn't mean there's an opportunity, because this is a late entrant.
5. Why it works (in order of importance)
- The demand already exists: silly smile animated wallpapers went viral on TikTok starting in 2025. The category still adds about 1.83M new installs in the last 7 days, so demand isn't fading.
- Volume comes from paid acquisition: installs rise in steps, and the country rollout (Europe → India / Latin America / Southeast Asia) looks like ad spend.
- Conversion comes from ASO and inflated ratings: the name and keywords use the category term directly, and guided reviews keep the rating at 4.7.
- Behind it is the factory's capacity: 12 apps share one template, one website and one support email, so cloning is cheap. Speaker Cleaner is growing faster, which shows this playbook transfers across categories.
6. Differentiation
Almost none. Compared with leaders like Lutech, Fusion Flow and Daily Tool Labs, the features, creative style and name are the same formula. The only difference I can point to is "AI wallpaper creator", and there's no evidence it drives volume. It works because of category tailwinds, paid acquisition and ASO, not because it's differentiated. Daily Tool Labs adds sound ("& Sound") and arrowshapes adds a gun, which are small real differences within the category, and both do have traction.
7. Takeaways
- Pick a lightweight utility or personalization category that TikTok has already validated and where the leaders are still growing. Clone it quickly with a template and list it using the category keyword as the name.
- Test in Europe on a small scale, then scale into cheap markets like India, Latin America and Southeast Asia, and use ads plus in-app purchases to pay back.
- Guide ratings by asking about satisfaction first and only sending happy users to the store, keeping the rating around 4.7.
- Test several categories at once under one account, and keep investing in whichever one pays back.
8. Uncertain
- Which channel was used, how much was spent, and the ROI: not in the ad libraries, unverified.
- What the in-app purchases actually are (subscription or one-time purchase), and whether AI generation is paid: unverified.
- Whether the developer is a Vietnamese or Chinese team (a Hong Kong shell with a Vietnamese name on the email): unverified.
- Whether there is install or rating fraud: the only indirect sign is an "abnormal rating distribution", which is not enough to conclude anything.
- The 30-day window won't be available until 11-28. For now, the growth estimate rests on 9 days of direct observation, with the rest estimated from AppstoreSpy.
