A borrowed name, 70k installs in under four weeks: how the Indian caller-ID app "Trust Call" was spread out
What it is An Android caller ID, spam-call blocker and SMS filter app aimed at India, the Gulf and Southeast Asia, making money from ads and subscriptions.
Why it blew up Spam and scam calls are rampant around India and the demand is huge. It copied the name of a tens-of-millions-download twin to ride store search, a factory bought installs from cheap countries, and it caught the wave from India's Nov 1 mandatory caller-ID rule.
CHow you could approach it Don't build a tenth app with the same name. Teams that already have Android monetization and paid acquisition can move to languages or countries the template hasn't filled, or take on what CNAP and the big players ignore (2G/3G, international calls, scam SMS impersonating banks and couriers).
- Data (updated daily) · first launch 2026-10-12 · 11-07 installs 73,739
Android · Total installs worldwide Data 2026-10-29 → 2026-11-07 (10 days, 10 observations). Google's detail page only refreshes install counts every other day, so a flat day doesn't mean nobody installed.
A caller-ID blocker called "Trust Call: CallerId & Block" on Google Play got 74k installs in under four weeks after launch, and it's still adding about 9k a day. The product itself has nothing new, the name is borrowed, the developer account is new, and behind it is a Vietnamese app factory. It teaches a playbook of "essential category + near-identical name + cheap-country paid installs". But if you want to copy it, that route is already crowded with dozens of clones.
A one-word review with 31 people marking it helpful
In 2026 Oct 23, an Indian user named Anup Tigga left a review with one word: "Nice". By Nov 6, 31 people had marked it helpful, making it the top review on the app's India page on Play. The second-ranked review was left by Sikander Dhakhad in Oct 24, its body just his own name, "Sikandar", with 12 helpful votes. The app has 200 reviews in total, rated 4.3 stars (Play India page, 11-06).
Near-empty reviews sitting at the top usually mean something: the people installing it weren't searching and then liking it after use, they were pulled in by ads and nudged by pop-ups into rating it. The story of this app is mostly written in these two reviews.
What it is
A standard "caller ID + spam blocker" Android app: for unknown numbers it shows who's calling, auto-blocks telemarketer and scam calls, filters spam SMS, can be set as the default SMS app, and lets you manage allow and block lists. The first line of the store page reads "Tired of unwanted calls from telemarketers or automated robocalls?" and the short description is "Stop robocalls & identify true caller ID". That "true caller" wasn't picked at random; it's riding Truecaller's search terms.
- Launched: 2026-10-12,10-18, last updated 1.0.1
- Revenue: contains ads, with one in-app purchase at $0.99–29.99
- Installs: 10-29 about 10.3k → 10-31 26.3k → 11-03 53.7k → 11-06 73.7k; +63k in the last 7 days (Google Play installs)
- Charts: only on the free Communication category chart, peaking at #44 in India 11-05; it has also charted in the UAE, Saudi Arabia, Singapore, Malaysia, the Philippines, Indonesia, Turkey, Thailand and Vietnam, at ranks 74–200. It has never charted on the overall or Top Grossing charts.
Even the package name is a string of keywords: com.sms.callerid.spamblocker.contacts.call.
The name is borrowed
A "Trust Call: Caller ID & Block" already exists on Google Play: developer Maxify Global, 13.2M installs. This one just drops a space ("CallerId").
This isn't an isolated case. Listing caller-ID apps on Play with "Trust / Trusted Call" in their names turns up at least nine:
| App | Developer | Total installs |
|---|---|---|
| Caller ID: Trusted Call & SMS | Appsquad | 17.2M |
| Trust Call: Caller ID & Block | Maxify Global | 13.2M |
| Trusted Call & SMS, Blocker | Truong Giang (Vietnam) | 10.8M, +7k in the last 840 days |
| TrustDial | — | 9.57M |
| Caller ID Trusted Call & Block | Code bytes | 8.16M |
| Caller ID Trust Call & Blocker | ES Solutions | 5.98M |
| Trust Caller ID | SHING HENG | 1.47M |
| TrustCall | A CUBED | 220k, +7k in the last 110 days |
| Caller ID: Trust Call & Alerts | EZLife | 200k |

It's an established template: the same name, the same screenshot formula, the same feature list, and at least five versions have reached tens of millions of downloads. Beyond the name, dozens of small "Caller ID & Spam Blocker" apps follow the same pattern, such as Peekora, +300k in the last 7 days. This app didn't invent the template; it's the latest copycat, at 70k against 13M, two orders of magnitude smaller.
Who's behind it: a California address, a website pointing to Vietnam
The "About the developer" section on the store page lists SHI & COMPANY INC, with an address in Irvine, California, but the support email is a personal gmail. Further down, the developer website is amobear.vn.
Amobear is a Vietnamese tools-and-mini-games studio that has publicly talked about how it buys users. AppsFlyer has a case study called "How Amobear boosted ROAS by 50% with AppsFlyer and TikTok," and a Mobvista case says programmatic ads make up more than 25% of its monetization. Going by developer websites, we found 69 Google Play packages pointing to amobear, published under more than twenty different developer names (Amobear Studio, AMOBEAR TECHNOLOGY GROUP, GONG KEE, TTT Studios, BEAR LAB...). The biggest is the mini-game 456 Run Challenge, with 107M installs.
In call blocking alone, this network has already shipped four under different accounts:
- Smart Blocker: Call ID App (GONG KEE PTE. LTD.): 2.8M
- Caller ID & Spam Blocker (TTT Studios): 2.07M
- SmartBlocker: Block Spam Call (Amobear AILABS): 730k
- Trustcaller: Spam Call Blocker (Amobear Avntech): 180k
This product is the fifth, under a new account that only became active 2026 years ago. Other packages under the same account include AI chat, AI photo and video, short dramas, and web novels, all popular categories that factories love to spam out. Whether SHI & COMPANY and Amobear are the same company, a co-publishing arrangement, or just share Amobear's code or ad SDK can't be determined from outside. The only clue is the developer website, so we infer it's the same network.
Opening five accounts in one category has two benefits: if one package gets pulled, the others aren't affected, and several packages each compete for placement on the same search terms.
Where users come from
Store search, riding on a brand name (confirmed). People searching "trust call" see it, and so can people searching "true caller." In India, when people look for caller ID, the first name that comes to mind is Truecaller.
Paid user acquisition (inferred, high confidence). The evidence is several points taken together: the backing is a known user-acquisition studio; the install curve is a steady 5–10k per day with no single-day spike; the charted countries are all cheap-install markets like India and Southeast Asia, plus the Gulf, where ad prices are high; and the reviews are hollow. We found no ads for it in the major ad libraries, which doesn't prove they didn't spend, only that no one has seen the creatives. Searching its name on TikTok and X turns up 0 results, with no creators and no content.
Rode India's CNAP wave (timing matches, causation unverified). India's telecom department required carriers to display registered real names for unknown incoming calls on 4G/5G networks, starting Nov 1, 2026 (The Hacker News, Mint, and Times of India all reported it). This product's biggest surge landed between 10-31 and 11-03, with +27k in three days. The news made "caller ID" a hot term, so more people searched and it's plausible the app picked up some search traffic. But install counts only update every two or three days, so this doesn't prove the app caused the bump.
Where the money comes from
Ad-driven, with subscriptions and in-app purchases as a secondary source: users in India and Southeast Asia see ads, while users in Gulf countries are more likely to pay $0.99–29.99 for a subscription. No public revenue figures exist, and it has never charted in a top grossing list, so how much it actually earns is not visible from outside. For this kind of factory, as long as each install's ad revenue exceeds its acquisition cost, they keep spending. The smooth upward curve suggests they still think the math works (inferred).
Who it's competing with
The ones above are our own kind and copies. The real competition is these:
- Truecaller: 1.91B installs, 3.56M new in the last 7 days, ranked #2 in India's Communication top grossing chart. It has built its own phone number database, something no template clone has.
- Established rivals: CallApp 434M, Eyecon 153M, Whoscall 75.5M, Hiya 18.1M, Sync.me 16.7M.
- Built into the system: Google Phone and Samsung Phone have had spam call warnings for a long time.
- India's CNAP: carriers show real names themselves, for free, across the whole network, with no app to install. In the short term it makes the term trend; in the long term it eats the need for "I just want to know who's calling."
The good news is the demand is real: Truecaller alone adds 3.56M a week, so a lot of people search for this and click these ads. The bad news is that this pool has already been split up by big companies and factories.
What to learn from it
- In a category where one player dominates and the need is real, being a cheaper stand-in can still bring steady traffic. Users want a feature, not a brand. If the name is close enough, the keywords are complete, and acquisition is cheap, people will install it.
- One template, many accounts. This spreads takedown risk and takes up more search slots. It's standard factory practice, and it's the reality you face when competing with them: you have one account, they have five.
- Watch policy and news for search windows. Events like CNAP can suddenly make keywords in an old category hot, and whoever already has a package live gets the traffic first.
If it were you
C: Worth learning from, not worth chasing.
This is a template category that has been copied to death. This product is at least the tenth package with the same or a near-identical name, and long term it faces competition from India's CNAP and built-in system features. It works because factories have ready-made code, a monetization stack, acquisition teams, and a pile of accounts, none of which a solo developer or small team can easily get.
Who it suits: a team that already has the code and ad monetization stack for an Android utility app, buys users in India and Southeast Asia, and can calculate the payback period for each install. For you, this is just another category to spread across, not a startup.
Who it doesn't suit: indie developers who want to win through product differentiation, organic search, or content. There's no content channel here (searching TikTok and X for it turns up 0 results), search slots are filled by same-name packages, so no matter how good your product is, it's hard to be seen. It's also a poor fit for anyone unwilling to ride a brand name, since most of this category's traffic depends on that tactic.
How to build it (if you still want to): don't make the tenth "Trust Call." Either switch to a language or country the templates haven't saturated yet (for example, a local-language interface or local scam number types), or take on a gap that big companies and templates haven't covered well. India's CNAP only covers 4G/5G and only shows registered names. It doesn't handle 2G/3G, international calls, or scam texts impersonating banks and couriers.
How to acquire users: same as them, store keywords plus cheap user buys in low-cost countries; add budget in the days right after news events like CNAP.
When the window is: CNAP just took effect, so the interest in "caller name" and "caller ID" is probably peaking in the few weeks of November. After that, what's left is competing on price with Truecaller and dozens of copies.
Signs that show we got this wrong: ① this package passes 1M installs by late December, or charts in India's Communication top grossing list, which would mean there's still room for late entrants in template categories; ② the same network launches a sixth or seventh call-blocking package under new accounts within one or two months, which would mean this business is profitable for them and the numbers are worth redoing; ③ conversely, if Truecaller's weekly new installs in India drop noticeably after CNAP goes live, the category is shrinking in India and it's not worth another look.

Why Trust Call: CallerId & Block (com.sms.callerid.spamblocker.contacts.call) made it onto the chart
Bottom line
This isn't a new app that succeeded on its product. It's the Vietnamese tools/games factory Amobear network launching another package in a proven template category, caller ID plus blocking, through a fresh shell account (SHI & COMPANY INC). It directly reuses a hit competitor's name, "Trust Call: Caller ID & Block" (Maxify Global's package already has 13.2M installs). It mainly targets low-CPI markets in India, the Gulf, and Southeast Asia, and relies on ad monetization plus subscriptions to pay back. Three weeks after launch it has 74k installs, which is small for this category.
Basic data (googleplay library, 2026-11-06)
- Developer: SHI & COMPANY INC (the Play page address is Irvine, California, and the support email is a personal gmail address, [email protected]). The **developer website is set to amobear.vn/** (googleplay library

The account's other two packages (AI Chat and AI Photo & Video) list shi-company-inc.github.io as their website, and all three launched between 2026 and October 8. AppBrain shows this account "active since 2026, 6 apps, roughly 700k installs combined." - Launched 2026-10-12, version 1.0.1 (updated 10-18/19), contains ads, offers in-app purchases from $0.99–29.99.

The Play India page shows "50K+, 4.3 stars, 200 reviews"; our database has no rating. - Chart: only charted in Google Play's COMMUNICATION category, Top Free. Best result is #44 in India (11-05), and it has also charted in ae, sa, sg, my, ph, id, tr, th and vn, all within ranks 74–200 (googleplay

Both are Indian usernames (India Play page). The review text is nearly empty, which looks like users who came in through paid acquisition and gave a rating, or were prompted by a pop-up to rate.

Big-tech features and platform events
- Google Phone and Samsung's built-in dialer already identify spam calls.
- India's DoT required carriers to show CNAP caller names on 2026-11-01 3G/4G networks starting 5 (The Hacker News 2026-10; Legal 500). That policy has long been the alternative to apps like this, but in the short term it could push up search interest in "caller id."

Growth channels
- Paid acquisition plus multi-account app spraying (inferred, high confidence)
- Evidence 1: Amobear is a publicly known Vietnamese performance-marketing studio. AppsFlyer has a case study, "How Amobear boosted ROAS by 50% with AppsFlyer and TikTok", and a Mobvista case says programmatic ads make up over 25% of its monetization revenue.
- Evidence 2: in this category it has already published under more than 4 different developer accounts, and this app is the 5th.
- Evidence 3: the install curve is smooth, 5–10k per day, with no spikes. Reviews are empty, and countries are concentrated in low-CPI markets (India, Southeast Asia) and high-eCPM Gulf countries.
- Neither our Meta nor our Google ad library has it. These libraries only track products on our list, so not finding it there doesn't mean it isn't advertised.
- ASO name-piggybacking (confirmed)
- The title "Trust Call: CallerId & Block" nearly copies the 13.2M-install app from Maxify Global.
- The short description reads "identify true caller ID", which rides on Truecaller's search terms.
- The package name stacks the keywords sms / callerid / spamblocker / contacts / call.
- Timing (unverified): growth peaked from 11-01 to 11-03 (+27,448), right when India's CNAP rollout took effect. It may have benefited from search interest in the "caller ID" topic. But our data is observed once every 2–3 days, so causation can't be proven.
- No content or creator channels found: searching TikTok (TikHub) and X (x-radar) for "Trust Call caller id" and "Amobear" each returned 0 results. YouTube has one Hindi tutorial with 19k views, probably about the same-name Maxify app.
Why it took off
- Category demand is already there: India, the Gulf and Southeast Asia have lots of nuisance and scam calls, and Truecaller alone gained 3.56M new installs in 7 days, so both the search and paid-acquisition pools are large.
- The template is proven: the "Trust/Trusted Call" naming, screenshots and features (caller ID + SMS filtering + blocklist + default SMS app) already exist in more than 5 apps at the tens-of-millions level. Copying it carries little risk.
- The team has factory capacity: the Amobear network has ready-made code, an ad monetization stack and a paid-acquisition team, so it can publish again and again, one account per app, to spread takedown risk and grab more search slots.
- Monetization is ads plus a $0.99–29.99 in-app subscription: ads in low-CPI markets, subscriptions in the Gulf. No public revenue, and it has not charted in any Top Grossing list.
Differentiation
Almost no differentiation: the feature descriptions are nearly word-for-word the same as competitors, and even the name is copied from the rivals. Its only "difference" is in distribution: a fresh new account that rides the search traffic of a same-name hit. That is why it gets this level of volume, but it also caps the ceiling. At 70k it is two orders of magnitude below the template benchmark (13M), which makes it look like a test package within the network, not a winner.
Visibility and copycats
- No press, no X discussion and no public revenue. It is in the "nobody knows about it yet" stage.
- But "nobody knows about it" doesn't mean there is an opening: this category is a template market that has been copied to death, and this app is itself a follower.
What to take from it
- In a category with inelastic demand and a dominant leader (Truecaller), using a near-identical name, a keyword-stuffed package name and low-CPI country paid acquisition can get stable volume at low cost.
- Publishing the same template under multiple accounts spreads the ban risk and lets you take more search slots.
- Around platform and policy events (India's CNAP), caller-ID-type keywords get a window of heat.
Uncertain
- What is the relationship between SHI & COMPANY and Amobear: the same company, a front publisher, or did it borrow Amobear's template or SDK? The only evidence is the developer website.
- Actual paid-acquisition scale and channels: we couldn't find this app's specific ad creatives.
- Retention and revenue: no data.
- Whether CNAP really brought search traffic.
